Design ideas: decorating with blue and white

Choose a classic blue and white colour palette to add timeless appeal to a room.

Update furniture with navy blue and white striped upholstery fabrics for a smart feel that works beautifully in a white decorating scheme.

Want to create a dramatic, moody look in the living room? Go for midnight blue. This beautiful shade can be used for both traditional and contemporary rooms.

For a classic look, use blocks of colour. Paint walls in a deep blue shade and team with a white Chesterfield-style sofa with a button back and scroll arms. Add cushions in a mix of blue-and-white Ikat and geometric designs. Then finish with statement lighting – a standard lamp with a white ceramic base and navy lampshade, or perhaps a contemporary wall sculpture.

Blue and white also has a strong Mediterranean feel, and this look lends itself well to kitchens, dining rooms and bathrooms. Be inspired by beautiful Greek or Moorish designs and introduce these patterns on china and hand-painted wall tiles.

In the kitchen or bathroom, use fez wall tiles as a beautiful splashback behind a white kitchen worktop or basin. Layer the pattern with ceramic storage jars or add a traditional under-counter curtain in a fresh blue check fabric.

A white painted dining room can be easily updated by replacing the flooring with blue-and-white checkerboard tiles – and add further pattern with a geometric-print tablecloth. Or for a more simple scheme in the kitchen or dining room, choose a crisp white tablecloth and dress the table or shelving with beautiful china in geometric designs.

And in the bedroom, go for fresh white and navy blue linen with a mix of patterned bed cushions for an elegant look.
