Weird and wonderful patterns

Decorating with bold pattern is not for the faint-hearted – especially if you plan to match walls to floors, or furniture to curtains. If you’re feeling brave enough, going big with patterned design is a great way to add drama and colour to a room – plus it will hide a multitude of sins!

Before you settle on a pattern, think about the room you are going to decorate. What do you use it for? Is it a place to relax quietly? To entertain? Or even to work in? The function of the room will determine the type of pattern you use and, of course, your colour scheme.

To redecorate a room with a calming influence, choose classic vintage style. A conservatory or dining room can be much improved with soft pastel shades, wicker furniture and a traditional chequerboard floor. Romantic and feminine, add French-style influence to a vintage bedroom to add a touch of glamour to this personal space.

If you’re more interested in creating a room that will impress guests, opt for something a little more vibrant. Mixing the clean lines of sleek white furniture and the ornate detail of bright green damask wallpaper will create a luxurious and contemporary living room for you and friends to relax in.

Not just for making a statement, you can add pattern to just one piece of furniture or one wall to create a striking focal point in an otherwise paired-back home. Try reupholstering an old sofa in a retro print to breath new life into your decor. Or choose a patterned carpet for a small area, such as the hallway to add interest to this formal space.
