In 2006, Rhoda sold up and left London to start a new life in Sussex. Surrounded by coast and countryside, Rhoda and her partner designed and built a contemporary detached house on the site of a small bungalow for themselves and their two sons. Many of the lessons she learned - and continues to learn - inform her approach to home, garden and interiors journalism. The transformation of their property continues with the recent addition of a new extension to incorporate a utility room, home working study and shower room. Rhoda has a deep connection with the landscape so sustainable and environmentally friendly approaches are at the heart of her lifestyle choices.

Ideal Home Truths

Where’s your happy place?

My coastal garden - we are lucky enough to be close to the beach. We live in the hottest county in the UK so the plants that thrive here are drought-tolerant, sculptural and abundant. In summer, our garden teems with self-sown poppies, marigolds, sages, rosemary and euphorbia.

What’s your home addiction?

I love a bit of tablescaping - themed to the occasion! Tablecloth, napkins and napkin rings to make the place look lovely for guests and a vase of loosely-arranged flowers cut from the garden.

What is your next home project?

My home working office. I need a chair that won’t kill my back, a desk with drawers for all my magazines and a blind so I can adjust the light levels.
