Make a funky floral place mat

Impress your guests this Bank Holiday with a set of DIY place mats to spruce up your tabletop

If you’re expecting visitors this Bank Holiday weekend, why not treat your dining room table to a mini makeover with a new set of place mats? We’ve chosen a funky floral fabric but you could choose any print you like to suit your style. Style at Home shows you how to make this oh-sew-simple project in three easy steps…

You will need:

Fredrika fabric, £4 per metre, Ikea

Tape measure

Sewing machine

Thread & needle

Iron

Pins

Step one

Cut four rectangles of fabric measuring 32cm x 42cm. Take two of the rectangles and, with right sides facing, pin together so the raw edges match. Machine stitch, with a 1cm seam allowance, leaving a 10cm gap along the fourth side.

Step two

Turn the place mat the right way and poke the corners through, using a knitting needle to get a point. Press carefully, ensuring a crisp edge to all four sides of your place mat, ironing a ‘hem’ at the opening. Slip stitch the opening closed by hand, using small running stitches.

Step three

Top stitch around the four sides of your place mat, 1 cm in from the edge. Press and repeat to make another or continue with more fabric to make a set of four or six. To make matching coasters, repeat the process with 12cm x 12cm squares of fabric.
