This pretty thatched cottage in Dorset is surrounded by woodland, some of which is carpeted with bluebells in the spring. 'It's a hidden treasure - it offers warmth, security and peacefulness,' explain the owners who bought the house in 2006. The property was in a poor state of repair, particularly the grounds. Landscapers were brought on-site for three months to tidy up, renovate the pretty walled garden and create a drive with a turning circle. Attention then turned to the house, where a garden room was built, new windows installed as well as a new bathroom, shower room, cloakroom and kitchen.

Cream and red, a classic country palette was used in the new kitchen which is accessed through an archway to keep the space open-plan. Sand coloured tiling is subtle and homely, while a treated woodland branch makes a clever utensil rail. Humour is added with quirky letters and vintage wall signs.
