Label and hang utility buckets
Make chalkboard labels for small metal buckets that store kitchen essentials and cleaning kits.

You will need:

  • Buckets (find similar from Hobbycraft)
  • Chalkboard paint (£28.14 for 1L Ecos Chalkboard Blackboard paint, The Healthy House)
  • Masking tape
  • Chalk
  • Varnish (Americana DuraClear Varnish, £2.50 for 59ml, Hobbycraft)

Step 1 Use masking tape to outline a large oblong with two coats of coloured chalkboard paint, allowing each coat to dry.
Step 2 For a clean line, lightly score the edge of the masking tape area before removing the tape.
Step 3 Using a stick of chalk or a chalk marker pen, label the buckets’ contents. Varnish for a lasting finish.

Air towels on a decorated hanger
Upcycle a wooden coat hanger to make a practical rail to peg up kitchen linens.

You will need:

  • Wooden hanger
  • Eggshell paint (£53 for 2.5L Estate Eggshell, Farrow & Ball)
  • Varnish
  • Wooden clothes pegs
  • Decorative washi tape

Step 1 Lightly sand a wooden hanger, then wipe down to remove dust.
Step 2 Paint the hanger with two coats of eggshell paint, allowing to dry between coats. Finish with a top coat of crafter’s varnish.
Step 3 Dismantle a few hinged wooden clothes pegs (after making sure they fit on your hanger) and paint with two coats of eggshell paint, allowing to dry between coats. Reassemble the dry pegs and decorate with strips of washi tape.

Upcycle trays into memo boards
Put vintage-style baking trays on show, repurposed into magnetic memo boards.

You will need:

  • Baking trays
  • Metal treatment (such as Rust-Oleum Surface Primer, £9.49 for 400ml, Homebase)
  • Spray paint (such as Painter’s Touch, £4.99 for 150ml, Homebase)
  • Mini magnets
  • Chocolate moulds
  • Glue gun

Step 1 If you want to paint your trays, prime them first with a metal treatment and use a specialist spray paint.
Step 2 To make quirky country-style decorations, glue mini magnets onto the back of small metal chocolate moulds with a glue gun and leave to set. Use on the memo boards.
Step 3 For a rustic retro look, paint baking tins to match the pastel shades of vintage enamelware.
