5 reasons to love pared-back style

Inspiring design take-aways from this modern mews house

1 Keep it white
A top to toe paint job in shades of white and pale grey will give an instant modern twist to a period home. Rather than destroy its character it blends together mis-matched surfaces and styles and makes for a cohesive and classy finish.

2 Mix up materials
The kitchen is the owner’s favourite room, with its glass ceiling section and neutral colour palette. The mix of marble worktops, minimal unit design and painted brickwork create an industrial but welcoming feel. The modern open-tread wooden staircase stretches from the ground floor up to the top (second) floor letting in light and creating a spacious feel.

3 Create a sense of drama
Powerful artwork is used as statement piece to add colour and interest to the room. The distinct blue in the photograph was picked up as the shade of choice when reupholstering the sofa in the adjoining living room area.

4 Add layers of luxe

The emphasis here is on cosy, which works all year round. On hot summer night, just discard the top layers at bedtime. A double sheepskin rug used on the bed, wooden furniture and a knitted-effect rug all combine to create a relaxing environment.

5 Choose simplicity for elegance
In this clean and chic space the marble splashback was chosen to sit alongside the neutral brick tiles and hexagonal marble mosaics on the floor.
