5 reasons to love rough luxe style
Inspiring ideas to take away from this contemporary rustic home
1 Concrete goes glam
Concrete surfaces embrace the roughness of the kitchen, (previously a cowshed!) which gets a hit of sparkle from the twinkling French chandelier and glassware on the central island. Decorative art adds a soft touch too.
2 Mid-century style set against raw bones
The owner enjoys the juxtaposition of mid-century finds with modern materials, such as this 1960s armchair, which she bought on eBay, with the concrete fireplace and original beams. To add movement to the neutral space she added a lacquer to the concrete floor before it dried, which created a milky scraped effect. Underfloor heating ensures it stays comfortable in winter.
3 Dramatic timber frames a contemporary interior
The timber frame acts as a show stopping backdrop for the modern sofas and vintage floor light and provides a home for the owner‘s beloved mermaid. ‘People told me I cannot put this here - it's too kitsch - but I don't give a damn. I say let her be,' she laughs.
4. Shake it up with florals
This home is full of surprises and a rose patterned duvet cover in the bedroom is one of them. Pictures of naked women in a home with three teenage boys is another. ‘I think it’s important for education, in the family, that you have this kind of openness. The children are used to growing up with art – you can find it everywhere in this house,’ says the owner.
5 Gilded finishes enhance raw materials A gold-framed oversized mirror and dramatic drawing by Italian artist Giuliano Vangi add wow factors to the mash up of materials in the bathroom. Polished concrete and raw wood contrast with high end fittings and a spacious walk-in shower.
