5 summer entertaining ideas you shouldn’t miss

For family get-togethers, birthdays or impromptu gatherings this summer, it’s good to have a few ideas up your sleeve. Take inspiration from our outdoor entertaining tips.

Alfresco dining should be a low-key affair. Let guests help themselves and make things run smoothly with easy-to-make extras that will turn your laid-back get-together into a memorable occasion.

1. Keep food safe

Ensure insects won’t join your alfresco party by making your own food covers. Terracotta flowers pots make ideal food covers, as a gust of wind won’t blow them off the table. Wash the pots and leave to dry before painting with an eggshell paint. When dry, finish with an easy-to-grab rope handle. Slip a short length of rope through the hole in the bottom of the pot, then tie a knot on the inside.

2. Make simple drink covers

That delicious punch you’ve just served
up isn’t going to be received with much delight if there’s a pesky wasp
floating in it. Protects your guests’ drinks by serving them in
miniature milk bottles topped with paper cupcake cases. Punch a hole in
the centre of each paper case so you can slip a straw through – you can even personalise them with people’s names.

3. Host a movie night

Make the most of long balmy nights by inviting friends over for an open-air film showing. Find the right location in your garden, peg up a white sheet and make the ground comfy with blankets and cushions. You’ll need a projector and a video source and some speakers, too. Don’t forget the popcorn.

4. Create a self-service station

Keep things simple at a summer
shindig and pop cutlery, napkins and straws into clean terracotta
flowerpots – it will save you the trouble of laying the table or making
up cutlery rolls. Finish off by labelling the pots with chalkboard-style

5. Play with slate board

Video Of The Week

Perfect for adding a cool, laid-back vibe to your alfresco eating spot. We love slate board because it will protect your table’s surface from hot plates and dishes. You can also turn it into a placemat and write on your guests’ names in chalk. Top each one with a linen napkin for a smart look.
