1 Mix up materials
The kitchen is kind of ‘classic industrial', says the owner whose rustic looking wooden doors are actually sawn oak with a white finish. ‘They look like reclaimed timber, ‘but it's engineered,' he adds. ‘Reclaimed wood is not so hardwearing and you can't wipe it easily.' Marble worktops add a layer of luxe and the copper taps are bang on trend.

2 Factor in some old with the new
The owners didn't want the kitchen to look too new and polished so they installed old bricks, reclaimed from a wall they had demolished in another part of the house. Roughly painted with off- white, they add textural detail and make a perfect backdrop for their Mid-Century sofa and vintage objects.

3 Source second-hand finds

Lots of good value finds from eBay and Gumtree give the home a vintage vibe. Most of the chairs were second hand. The table was made bespoke in 2008 for the couple's first flat. ‘We hope to have it forever now,' they say. ‘We love all the holes and rustiness about it.' The lights are designed so that they can be pulled up or lowered, and hang from a simple copper pipe.

4 Add instant period pizazz
Wooden panelling is a great way to add character to a space and works well with modern and traditional styles. Here a vintage workbench holds a collection of favourite pieces and brings heaps of personality to the space.

5 Rev it up with reclaimed materials
The owner spent hours building up and stripping off the paint on these reclaimed boards to get the right finish. ‘It was like painting a picture,' he says. A vivid bedspread makes the room modern and contrasts with an old bench from eBay.
