6 reasons to love modern vintage

Inspiring style takeaways from this period-meets-contemporary-retro London home

Half the fun of doing up their cool Victorian terrace home has been hunting out great pieces – vintage, salvaged, antique – and giving them a modern mix, say the young couple who own the house.

1 Go with the flow

Like many of us, the couple spend most of their time in the kitchen. ‘We made it a big, bright, square and symmetrical shape with no island or anything jutting out, affecting the flow of the space,’ they say. ‘That way we can cook while talking to guests.’ They spent a long time working out how to position the three lights over the workspace so the light falls just right.

2. Add some raw ingredients
A concrete fireplace, reclaimed trolley as a coffee table and metal pendant lamp offset the period details of the living room and give it a retro edge. A vintage armchair and linen-covered sofa and warmth – and comfort!

3. Mix up styles
White walls in the living room are a blank canvas for a mash up of co-ordinating styles. Check out how the couple have cleverly put together a French decorative corbal, vintage antlers and a retro light with an antique armchair. Layers of textures – a Turkish rug, floral cushion and sawn off logs add softness.

4. Use a display cabinet as a wardrobe
The couple’s most coveted vintage find is this restored shop display cabinet that they now use as their wardrobe. ‘It was meant to take eight weeks to restore and ended up taking six months – but it was worth it,’ they say.

5. Display vintage shutters on the wall
The couple salvaged these from a nearby house and decided they were worthy of displaying like a piece of art. They add an edgy layer of texture to the bedroom, contrasting with a cool mix of rough luxe items.

6. Keep the vintage vibe going the bathroom

Modern fittings mix with a period mirror and retro display cabinet in the couple’s bathroom. ‘We can believe what a good buy the display cabinet was,’ they say. ‘It looks great and holds everything!’
