Interior designer Celia Sawyer gives us her top five tips for stylish decorating this Christmas
Celebrity interior designer Celia Sawyer has shared her top decorting secrets for the festive season.
Forget traditional ‘Father Christmas colours’, this year it’s all about embracing log wood fires and faux fur throws that will have you dreaming of log cabins in the Swiss mountains.
“In this festive season most people enjoy cosy evenings and socialising with family and friends,” says Celia. “Rooms should be filled with open arms and although feel festive, the use of log fires
(or if you do not have one re-create with lots of candles), faux fur rugs and faux fur throws are key to an inviting space at this time of year.
“Steer away from Father Christmas colours – keep these firmly to on or around the tree!”
Sound good? Here are Celia’s five festive tips for your Christmas scheme this year…
Throw caution to the wind and move away from the off-whites, greys and neutrals, it’s time to be brave. There’s an insurgence of colour; think peacock, cranberry and midnight blue, mixed with gold. The bolder the better – it’s time to make a statement.
As we move into 2016 there will be a focus on faux fur. Why? It can be used in every room of the house through accessories such as throws and cushions, whilst being soft to touch and look great. Knowing where to source the finest faux-fur is an interior designer’s trade secret. I love using faux fur throws in bedrooms in particular – on the bed or thrown onto an occasional chair or sofa to give a cosy feel.
Minerals, metals and metallic
I’ve been saying this for a while but gold, chrome and metallic finishes are extremely popular right now and will continue to be so into 2016. The reason being that we’re all looking for something a little different in the home that catches people’s attention and offers a level of glamour.
Pyrite sculptures or bowls on tables, big chunks of quartz used as display pieces and unpolished semi-precious stones turned into glamorous bookends are all having their moment in the spotlight.
Lighting is integral to your home yet so many people overlook this. I highly recommend people think about how they live and what feel they want from a room. I love statement chandeliers above a dining table, something very reflective always looks striking and my greatest loves are wall and table lamps which can be used to create ambient pools of interest throughout your room scheme in the home.
As a rule, 2016 is going to be about texture. Interior design has moved away from plain and now it’s about the more layers the better. I love mixing metal and chrome against rich velvets, silks, leathers and faux fur. The combination creates glamour and interest – each layer offering something different for you to look at and touch.
