Create a wow display with personalised glass candles

Bring a gorgeous glow to your country decorating scheme with candles that show off a special message. Country Homes & Interiors tells you how achieve this look in four easy steps.

Add your choice of words or messages to glass candles for a pretty display. You could use this technique to spell out a loved-one’s name for a birthday celebration. Alternatively, why not use the letters LOVE or HOME to create a stylish display for a living room or bedroom? It is so easy to get this look – just follow the steps below.

You will need:

  • Glass candle jars (we used large pillar candles, £17.99 each, from Yankee Candle – we choose to use white candles but there are lots of other colours available to suit your scheme)
  • Sticky-back plastic such as Fablon (available from Hobbycraft, £5 for 45cm x 200cm, and other leading craft shops)

Step one

Remove the label and lid from each of the candles.

Step two

Print out an appropriate word in your favourite font to your chosen size. You can choose an elegant swirly font for a classic look or go for a simple design if you want a more contemporary result. You can also print out berry or flower motifs to add to the candle – or any other small motif that takes your fancy.

Step three

Cut out each letter or motif out very carefully. Place each one face down on the backing of a piece of sticky-back plastic, such as Fablon, and draw around it.
Cut out all the pieces.

Step four

Carefully peel off the backing of the sticky-back plastic and stick the letters and motifs on to the glass candles. Arrange in a row to spell out your chosen word.

For another country-inspired styling idea, try freehand painting or writing the letters with glass paint, which is also available from craft shops. A great way to display your finished candles is on an antiqued mirror-top table – this folding design costs £95 from Rigby & Mac. Faux or fresh flowers or berries add the finishing touch.
