5 style takeaways from this hip modern industrial home

Be inspired by this glass menagerie, where wildlife rules...

This hip new build home in the Hamptons has a surprising number of
house guests – 31 pigeons, four flamingos, three squirrels plus two
poodles for good measure. Sounds strange, but it works! Inspiration for you to take home starts here…

1 Crazy works together with cool
Despite its 31 pigeons, the living room is the coolest space. Behind the vintage touches, the house has some serious gadgetry, including speakers concealed in the ceiling and a TV that retracts into the floor. The double-sided sofa provides a flexible island for lounging, and gets around the problem of looking at the back of a sofa.

2 Sophistication rules in the kitchen
‘Given that the rest of the space is bathed with light from the glass walls, I knew I could take a risk and go dark in the kitchen,’ says the owner. Appliances are concealed in black lacquer cabinets, matched by black tiles for the walls.

3 Elegant entertaining with a gothic edge
This open-plan space allows for effortless entertaining, offering an easy transition from the meals at the dining table to coffee on the sofa, with steps providing a subtle division between the two spaces. Lots of black and a set of ornate candlesticks add a hint of stylish macabre!

4. Drama in the bedroom
The owner was inspired by America’s midcentury Case Study Houses when working on the design of his home, which features two rectangular boxes. The bedroom which follows the gothic influences of the other rooms, enjoys views of the pool.

5. Big up the bathroom
The bathroom features a sunken bath to make the space feel bigger. For the owner, private spaces such as cloakrooms and bathrooms are a crucial cog in the overall scheme of a house. ‘Bathrooms are intimate, and it’s the one place where guests are always on their own and have the time to take things in and make up their mind on the overall design of the house,’ he says.
