How to make a gorgeous tablecloth weight with beach finds

Bring a special touch to your outdoor dining table this summer by making your own homemade tablecloth weights using shells, driftwood and glass floats

These pretty tablecloth weights will bring a fun, beach-inspired look to any alfresco table – and they are so easy to make! Simply use a mix of favourite shells and driftwood gathered on beachcombing walks combined with decorative glass gloats and jute string. The end result will be tablecloth weights that are completely bespoke. Country Homes & Interiors shows you how to achieve this look in four easy steps.

You will need:

Beachcombing finds such as driftwood and shells (or buy from the wide selection available at Dorset Gifts)

Decorative glass floats (we used floats from Dorset Gifts – these turquoise glass spheres cost £19.95 for 4 or £35 for 8 in assorted sizes. There are several other colours available.)

String (find similar jute twine for £2 for 33 metres at Hobbycraft)

Drill

Step one

To make the weights, start by cutting several lengths of string to the length of your table plus 1 metre, and several more to the width plus 1 metre.

Step two

For each tablecloth weight, drill holes in pieces of driftwood and large shells (or buy pre-drilled) and thread some onto the ends of a length of string along with a glass float to provide weight.

Step three

Make more weights in the same way until you have enough to hold your tablecloth in place.

Step four

Arrange the strings down and across the table to keep the tablecloth from blowing away.

Team your lovely weights with a tablecloth in a colour that echoes the sea for a beach-inspired table settling – this one was made using Stone Emerald fabric, £35 m, Villa Nova. Set the table with fresh white china and glasses in shades of blue, green and aqua to complete the look. Alternatively, you could use pierced pebbles instead of shells and floats to create a more rustic pared-down look.
