National Cream Tea Day done the right way

Not that we’re complaining, especially today – it’s National Cream Tea Day!

Any excuse, eh?

The traditional cream tea has four essential ingredients:

A pot of perfectly brewed English Breakfast Tea

Two homemade scones per person (at least)

Clotted cream

Strawberry jam

Naturally, we’re totally up for celebrating this glorious day, so here are six ways to do National Cream Tea Day the right way…

1. Get your bake on

Homemade scones always taste better. Wonky? Bit burnt? It’s all part of the fun – think ‘farmhouse baking’. But if you want to head out and about for an indulgent afternoon, the Cream Tea Society
(who knew?!) has lots of recommendations.

Set your table

Lay the perfect table for the perfect afternoon tea. Think traditional English garden – pretty tablecloth, matching crockery and cups and saucers.

3. Choose your timing

A traditional cream tea is usually enjoyed in the late afternoon – there’s a reason teashops up and down the country dread the ‘4pm rush’. Go for two scones (one is never enough and three just a little on the heavy side) and you won’t need a huge dinner.

4. Brew your tea

There’s a reason tea is the name of the game – scones with cream and jam call for a pot of perfectly brewed English Breakfast tea. Coffee fans, on your bike.

5. Load up your scones
(correctly!)

The debate rages about how to load scones.
The tradition has ‘Cornish pasties’ going for jam first, then cream, with ‘Devonshire dumplings’ choosing cream as the base, then topped with jam. But as someone who grew up in rural Cornwall (and whose mum ran a tea shop, no less) I sit firmly with our friends across the border – cream as a base, topped with jam. Which camp are you in?
