Pimp your patio! 6 ideas for small spaces

Make over your patio, no matter how small, with these 6 stylish ideas

One of the best ways to turn a patio space from drab to fab is with a bold hit of colour. Pick up a simple cafe-inspired bistro table and chairs set in your favourite shade and add shutters to the window overlooking your patio. If fixing shutters to your window is not an option, why not put a decorative set on a wall or fence instead? Take a look around salvage yards and antiques fairs for a set that you can paint.

If space on your patio is really tight and you don’t want furniture cluttering up the space, a hammock could be just the thing you need. Tie it to a tree or attach to a sturdy wall with a hook and pile high with cushions for a relaxing spot that you won’t want to leave! If possible, work out which spot in your garden gets the sun for the longest amount of time and put your hammock there.

Sometimes, all a patio needs is a bit of smartening up so, if your space is set across two levels, add decking to the upper tier and treat yourself to classic wooden furniture to keep the look understated and chic. String up a length of pretty bunting as a cute finishing touch, then sit back and relax with a glass of something refreshing.

If relaxed, boho style is your thing, consider giving your patio a Moroccan-inspired makeover. Bright jewel shades, such as fuchsia pink, cobalt blue and zingy orange, are the name of the game, while plenty of embroidered scatter cushions and an outdoor rug with bring this look together beautifully. Make sure you have plenty of coloured glass tealight holders and punched metal lanterns to fill with candles as the sun goes down.

Give your patio a whole new focal foint with a pond. If you enjoy spending time in your garden relaxing, rather than entertaining, consider dedicating part of it to creating a pond so you can sit back and watch the fish swim peacefully. It’s surprisingly theraputic! Plus, a pond will encourage a whole new range of wildlife into your garden, such as frogs and dragonflies.
