If you're planning on a romantic break this Valentine's day, chances are you won't be heading to Scunthorpe. The North Lincolnshire town has beaten Bradford and Birmingham to the dubious accolade of the UK's least romantic getaway destination
Poor old Scunthorpe – the beleaguered North Lincolnshire town gets a hard rap. Not only is it mocked mercilessly for it’s name, but it has now been voted the least romantic town in the UK.
‘Sunny Scunny’, as it is affectionately dubbed by locals, beat towns such as Bradford, Blackpool and Birmingham to the title taking 21% of the vote in a survey by Hotels.com.
The ‘industrial garden town’ of the north didn’t stand a chance pitted against such misty-eyed destinations as the Lake District and Cornwall, which took first and second place respectively in the most romantic league.
True, the town’s steel processing works (the largest in the UK) is hardly the stuff of picture postcards, but the surrounding coutryside is just as lush and verdant as, er, almost anywhere else in the UK.
A local council spokesman told news site This Is Scunthorpe that the perception of the town was unfair: ‘With internationally renowned restaurants such as Winteringham Fields, stately homes such as Normanby Hall and a championship golf course on our doorstep, Scunthorpe really is a hidden gem.
‘Where else within a five-minute drive of the industrial centre can you be in open countryside?’
Even Housetohome’s News Editor, Natalie, a ‘Scunny’ girl born and bred, testifies that the town has many redeeming qualities, and the Prime Minister’s wife, Samantha Cameron is believed to have spent many a happy year growing up near the town in her ancestral family home, Normanby Hall.

When it comes to London, however, the nation is divided. The Capital made a top-five appearance on both the most and least romantic list of UK destinations. Of those polled, 9% voted London romantic compared to 6% whose pulses were left sluggish at the prospect of a Valentine getaway there.
So if you’re hoping to impress a loved one with a romantic break this Valentine’s day, you’d better head to the Lake District, Cornwall or The Cotswolds… sorry Scunthorpe.
