Give your living room a quick and easy refresh this bank holiday with our stylish ideas
The bank holiday weekend offers the perfect opportunity to give your home a quick style refresh and where better to lavish your attentions than the living room? We have five great tricks for giving your room an easy update. Unleash your creativity by making a unique table display, give a sofa a facelift with a selection of cushions or beautify your walls with decorative objects.
1. Invest in some new cushions
One of the best ways to give a room a refresh is with a hit of colour or pattern, but you don’t have to start repainting or pasting up wallpaper. Instead, consider the humble cushion. When choosing cushions, take your colour and pattern cues from existing artworks or fabric designs. Here an old sofa is updated with a collection of cushions in shades that pick out other hues in the room, such as the pink of the armchair, and patterns that reference the floral theme elsewhere. By selecting harmonious colours, you can afford to mix a range of designs in different scales without it jarring.

2. Create a table centrepiece
Give your coffee table a centrepiece with an unusual display. In this scheme, natural materials such as quartz and shells are combined with succulents and orchids on a tactile wooden tray. Try to feature a range of different textures. Objects found while beachcombing, on holidays or on country walks have happy associations and will act as an aide-memoire. You could also group more decorative items, such as ceramics or other ornaments to equally eye-catching effect.
3. Hang mirrors
Instead of filling a wall with pictures, which can have a claustrophobic effect, why not bring interest to a room with mirrors? They will help bounce light around the room, enhancing the sense of space. Don’t be too regimented in how you hang them and don’t overcrowd the wall – three or four designs in different sized complementary shapes will be more effective.
4. Try wood panels
Wooden fretwork panels make for a charming wall feature. Jali sells readymade panels that will give your room a unique and intricate decorative look. The effect is reminiscent of garden trellis and ensures the room feels prettily summery.
5. Display art on shelves
For an easy-to-change room feature, try displaying framed pictures on shelves. Propped against the wall they have a casual yet stylish look and can easily be added to or replaced with other pictures should the mood take you. Exhibition posters or vintage adverts are particularly chic.
