Townhouse that inspired Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to write Sherlock Holmes could be yours for £1.5 million

A townhouse with bags of history is on the market

A grade II listed townhouse that inspired Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to write his favourite Sherlock Holmes story is on the market.

Church Hatch in Christchurch, Dorset, is widely believed to have inspired Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to write the Holmes’
classic ‘Adventure of the Speckled Band‘, as the author stayed in the stunning property before penning the short story.

The plot is one of four ‘locked room’
mysteries from the famous short story collection, and was selected by the author as his overall favourite – something that will surely be a selling point for the seven bedroom townhouse.

It’s estimated that Conan Doyle stayed in the property between 1890 and 1892, before penning the classic which features the famous duo Holmes and Watson investigating a woman who claims her stepfather is trying to kill her in the bedroom where her sister died two years earlier.

The townhouse, on the market for a cool £1.5 million, is spread over three floors and has a whopping seven bedrooms (could one of them be THE famous bedroom?), three reception rooms and several original Georgian features.

And if that wasn’t enough, a Grade II listed Mews House called Castle View is also included in the sale.

Conan Doyle was hugely fond of the surrounding area, and wrote the novel The White Company based around the history of Christchuch Castle – the ruins of which can be seen from the property.

The famous writer is also buried at a churchyard in Minstead, New Forest, just 17 miles away.

So, fancy buying a piece of history? Church Hatch is on the market with Denisons.
