We're all going on an Indian holiday...
Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past week, you’ll have seen Prince William and Princess Catherine have jetted off to India.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are visiting India and Bhutan on a week-long royal engagement. So far they have visited one of the poorest slums in the world, dined with Bollywood royalty and most recently have visited the Kaziranga National Park where they fed baby rhinos and elephants.
Today they are due to leave India and pop over to Bhutan for the remaining 2 days of the trip where they will be trekking the Himalayas and visiting the remote Tiger’s Nest monastery.
Of course, as everything the royal hand touches, Asia has quite literally turned to gold and is expected to be the new hotspot for British tourists this summer.
Online travel agent Opodo has predicted that the Duke and Duchess’ trip east will spark a surge in holiday bookings to both India and lesser-known Bhutan.
In the past, the famous couple prompted a 45% increase in bookings to Australia after their antipodean trip with Prince George in 2015 and more recently, their unofficial family ski holiday to Courchevel in February 2016 induced a 57% increase in bookings after the private photos, with baby Charlotte, were released.
The rest of the Windsor’s have the wow effect too – the Queen and Prince Phillip’s 2015 trip to Berlin saw 31% influx of Brit’s in the capital and Prince Harry’s charity trip to South Africa in November spurred a huge 78% increase in holiday bookings.
If stats last week are anything to go by then Opodo’s predictions look correct – the online agent has already seen a 44% rise in bookings to Bhutan, an otherwise scarcely travelled country.

Opodo’s destination expert, Lukas Balter, said: “When members of the Royal family travel the world, be it on official visits or for some rare down-time, we commonly see a spike in bookings as Brits feel royally inspired. Media and consumers alike clamour for rare glimpses of the Windsors on their travels, which are arguably the ultimate family holiday snaps.”
