Make a throw
Follow our simple steps to make a throw that will add eye-catching colour and pattern to any room
You will need
Main fabric : joined together to form a 203cm square
(we used Féria-lin, ref 04633/01, £120 per m, by Manuel Canovas at Colefax & Folwer)
Backing fabric: also joined together to form a 203cm square
(we used Queen Anne Vine, ref F060WD, £257 per m, Chelsea Textiles)
Two lengths of fringed trim: each 204cm long
(we used fringed trim, £2.95 per m, John Lewis)
Matching thread
Step 1 – Lay your main and backing fabric squares right sides facing, matching raw edges all round. Pin and then stitch along two opposite side edges taking a 1.5cm seam and starting and stopping 10cm from each end
Step 2 – Remove pins and press open seam allowances
Step 3 – Along the two remaining raw edges of the main fabric turn 1.5cm to the wrong side and press. Turn through
Step 4 – Working on the right side of the main fabric, pin a length of fringe trim along one pressed edge, turning under the 2cm excess at each end. Stitch in place on main fabric only. At each end, slip stitch the excess fringe trim in place on the reverse. Repeat with the second length of trim along the second raw, pressed edge of the main fabric. Remove pins and turn throw over
Step 5 – Along the two remaining raw edges of the backing fabric turn 1.5cm to the wrong side and press. To finish off the main seams, carefully slip stitch the gap between the backing fabric and the main fabric around the fringe trim at each of the four corners of the throw
Step 6 – Pin and tack one pressed edge of the backing fabric in place along the back of one fringed edge of the main fabric, pinning and tacking through all layers. Slip stitch backing fabric in place. Repeat to attach the second pressed edge of the backing fabric in the same way
Step 7 – Remove pins and tacking stitches and press throw
