Embellishment on fabrics and furniture, inspired by folk art patterns, is big news this autumn. Look for inlaid and carved furniture and upholstery with appliquéd designs. Patterns inspired by embroidery are now being machine stitched or printed on to fabrics, bedlinen and wallpaper, making them more affordable.
Have fun mixing and matching patterns. Stick to one colour group, for example brights such as clashing pinks and reds. For a contemporary take dont overload the room, simply use to highlight key areas. Frame precious pieces of inherited embroidery and hang them up on walls; use scatter cushions and a quilt to dress a bed; and add a fabulously upholstered chair to make a statement.
