Use mellow colour in the living room

Voyage Decoration’s Nebula wall art, £26 per m – its loose impressinist style makes for a dreamy take on a coastal look

Swapping summer-fresh blues and whites for a warmer, moodier palette of navy, denim blue, cream and greige makes for a relaxed and cosy feel, helped along by tactile basketware, soft knitted throws and textured ceramics.

Add global prints

Cushions, from £14 each; Jewel rug, from £29; Dark Moonlight vases, from £10 each; all JD Williams

Update classic coastal style with a Morroccan-inspired spin. A little pattern is all you need – tie dye, tile prints and ikat – or, be brave and try an ombre paint effect in tonal blues for a feature wall with a difference.

Mix it up with textured accessories

Costal style has always been based around natural textures, and that hasn’t changed. It’s all about the mix: put rustic baskets and rough-hewn wood next to smooth glazed ceramics, super-soft woollies an shiny metallic lanterns for details and variety.

Switch out plain linen for patterned

Watercolour double bed linen set, £16; Geo cushion, £7: Watercolour cushion, £8; white fur throw, £30; table lamp, £25; Honeycomb vase, 6£; all George Home

Switch out plain linen for patterned

Dip a tentative toe into the trend by updating your neutral bedroom with painterly print bed linen in a winter-coastel-inspired palette. Look out for soothing inky blues, greys and pale amethyst shades.

Work in a weathered effect wall

Berkeley wallpaper, £29 per roll, Albany range, Wallpaperdirect. For similar vases, try a selection, Design Vintage and West Elm.

For a twist on driftwood finishes traditionally associated with coastal style, opt for a wallpaper in a distressed paneling effect. Contrast with clean paintwork and decorative accessories to avoid overdoing the shabby feel.

Make waves with painterly wallpaper

Sansui Indigo Wash, £90 per m, Zoffany

When it comes to pattern, seaside motifs like boats, starfish ans shells have made way for elegant watercolour-effect brushstrokes.

Keep accessories clean and crisp
