Create a nautical dining room in 5 steps

The nautical look naturally lends itself to a dining room, especially if it’s situated in an open-plan space, evoking happy memories of summer holidays, a calm and relaxing atmosphere and an alfresco feel. It’s a simple yet effective look to pull off, with pops of bright blues and reds easily added to transform an existing neutral scheme into a cool and modern space.

A neutral sand-coloured tiled floor or white-painted timber boards in a dining room will instantly give it that beach chic look, while white walls will keep the scheme fresh and bright. You could even opt for a wood-effect wallpaper to recreate that beach-hut tongue and groove panelled look.

A bright white room can look a bit too stark at times, so add a second neutral colour such as a dove grey, which can then be offset by bright punchy stripes in the form of wallpaper or upholstery. The shade of blue you choose is key for this look, however, so ensure it’s closer to navy than royal blue for an elegant result.

When choosing your dining room furniture, pared-back blonde wooden tables and chairs or rustic driftwood pieces will enhance the look. To keep the feel relaxed and informal, go for deckchair-inspired striped upholstery and a bench and table set rather than traditional dining room furniture.

This is the perfect opportunity to take inspiration from abroad, so look at New England style shutters for window treatments. As for lighting, fishermen’s pendant lights are very popular right now, which could be hung over a dining table – just ensure they’re on dimmable switches if you can, or you could have industrial-style wall lights instead and rely on dimmable downlighters to create ambience in the evening.
