Metallics are hotter than ever, so get inspired by these DIY ideas to give your home some shimmer and shine
The metallic trend shows no signs of abating. Copper, gold, bronze or brass – there is a metal out there for everyone. Precious metals were a huge catwalk trend in 2014, think shiny frocks and lustruos bags but now metals are taking over our homes from wallpapers to flooring, appliances to furniture. No matter what your style or scheme is or whether you live in a period property or a newbuild, shiny homeware will sit happily anywhere.
For the crafty among us, we’ve pulled together four inexpensive and easy makes to try at home. Using metallic fabric paint, shiny washi tape, spray paint and gold leaf, these ideas will add just the right amount of luxe…
1. Stencil a cushion
Slot a piece of card under the fabric. Use a low-tack adhesive to stick the stencil in place, then gently apply fabric paint, in layers, with a sponge or stiff brush. Allow it to dry well before setting the paint with a hot iron. Fill with a cushion pad and sit proudly on an occasional chair or bench.
2. Make over a pendant
Use spray paint to add a copper gleam inside a metal pendant light. Work in a well-ventilated area and mask the edge for a neat finish. For even coverage, build the paint gradually, letting it dry between each layer.
3. Glam up a bowl

Wipe the bowl free of dust and dirt. Apply a thin, even layer of primer on the inside and leave for 15min. Lay on sheets of gold leaf, smoothing with a soft brush as you go, until you have covered the area. Rub gently with a soft cloth to remove any excess.
4. Update Vases
Create a polka-dot pattern using a sponge applicator and porcelain paint. Allow to dry thoroughly. For a less-permanent look, wrap washi tape around the vase.
