Bamboo gets trendy

Go on, get caned

Famous as the panda’s favourite snack, bamboo has emerged as the material of choice for eco-conscious consumers, too. So why the green credentials? Well, it’s one of the fastest growing plants, making it super-sustainable.

But more than that, it looks good too, as the folk at Artek know. The Finnish brand, revitalised by new creative director Tom Dixon, has introduced a range of bamboo dining chairs and tables.

And to cement its cool kudos it’s the material that was used for the undulating roof of Richard Rogers’ prize-winning terminal at Madrid’s Barajas airport. It can be used to make towels, matting – even clothes. And from fashion to wallpaper, bamboo foliage is the leaf print to love this summer.
