    Multi-fuel stoves

    How do they work?

They have a grate on which you burn wood, coal or peat (only one type at a time), with an air inlet underneath which allows air to enter, and a removable pan to catch the falling ash.

    Which one?

You’ll need to buy one with the right heat output. To work out the output use the online calculator at stovesonline.co.uk/calculator.asp. Powerful multi-fuel stoves can be used with a back boiler to heat your home’s radiators and hot water, too.

    Can I fit it myself?

You can install the stove in the fireplace yourself, but you’ll have to get a professional to line and insulate the chimney. This is essential as stoves produce tar build-up in the chimney, which can cause brick erosion and chimney fires.
