Brighten up small dark rooms in association with Farrow & Ball

To make the most of a small dark room, choose colours that work with it, advise the experts at Farrow & Ball.

A small dark room is a decorating challenge. Paint it in a light colour to try and make it seem larger, and it may end up looking dull. Paint it dark, and it risks shrinking even more. The best solution for this kind of room is perhaps the most surprising one—be brave and choose bold colours.

Strong hues add drama and intimacy to small spaces, turning them from decorative afterthoughts to the hub of the house. For example, colours such as Farrow & Ball’s elegant Radicchio (colour card number 96), a red with magenta notes, or the pretty blue green of Chappell Green (83) give your room a deep, rich jewel tone.

There is only one proviso: when you paint a small room in a strong colour, use it on the woodwork as well as the walls. Otherwise, lighter frames and skirting boards will make the walls look dark and the room will feel smaller.
