IKEA’s cult KALLAX cube unit has just received a stylish new update, and its sultry new colourway taps into one of the year’s biggest colour trends.

Despite being a simple cube storage solution, there is no shortage of brilliant IKEA KALLAX hacks to transform your home into an organised yet stylish space. However, this stunning new update is so good that you won’t even want to hack it!

If you’ve been a fan of all the rich, dark red tones that have dominated this year’s colour palette, you’ll be a huge fan of the cult furniture buyer's sleek update. Drenched in a rich, red-brown, this retro update has breathed new life into the flatpack classic.

I don’t know many people who haven’t owned a KALLAX unit at one point, or at the very least opted for a similar KALLAX alternative. I love mine. It's a great living room storage idea, where I can keep my items tucked away, whilst allowing for some cubes to display photographs and other trinkets.

But having spotted the stunning dark red KALLAX, I’m thinking about trading in my white flatpack for an upgrade. Dark, rich red hues have dominated 2026 as we shift towards moody, intimate interiors. Red is a timeless choice, and dark reds are full of warmth and character.

IKEA describes its red KALLAX as a ‘brown-red’, and with what looks like a matte finish, the unit has a gorgeous retro look that looks way more expensive than its £70 price tag. It also has a different design to the original KALLAX, with spaces in different sizes that you can personalise with inserts in boxes. It certainly looks more ‘high-end’ than the original; it offers more opportunity to make it unique to your tastes.

You can even purchase the new design with an underframe for an even more elevated look. Choose from a vertical KALLAX with underframe for £85 or a horizontal KALLAX with underframe for £90. If you already have a KALLAX unit, you can purchase the underframe separately for £20. The underframe really adds to the luxe look of the unit, and if I didn’t already know it was IKEA, I wouldn’t believe it was just £85.

I’m not the only one impressed with the KALLAX’s stunning new colourway; it’s earned quite a few words of praise online, too.

‘Easy to assemble and looks really good in a moody space’, said one review.

‘We waited a long time for it to come back in stock in our country, and we finally managed to buy it. It’s a mini library for my son’s books and a display case for his LEGO creations. I love the colour - that’s what drew me to it. I’d love to see more colourful Kallax units! 🤩’ said another.

We all have those fixations that we simply can’t get enough of – some are only fleeting, while others we never get sick of. I recently caught up with Vogue Williams, during which she revealed her biggest interiors obsession of all – and that’s all things stripe! But aren’t we all?!

The new co-host of Renovation Rescue series 2 on Channel 4, taking over from Stacey Solomon, is not only a home and interiors enthusiast – she also has a degree in construction design and management to back it up. But even she’s not immune to a stripy piece of homeware – whether it’s a cushion, a vase or a sofa. And even though stripes keep getting called a home decor trend, they’re really the ultimate anti-trend, a timeless pattern that never goes out of style.

‘If there’s something stripy I can’t resist,’ Vogue says. ‘Stripes are just so fun. Definitely go for a stripe!’

Vogue is currently in the middle of decorating her new home in London with her husband Spencer Matthews. And she already has stripe-filled plans for her future residence where she’s going to opt for some bold stripe drenching. ‘Even doing up our new house, I’m like, one room can be a stripe room. And everything will be a stripe.’

At the moment, the presenter splits her time between a house in her native Howth in Dublin, Ireland which she’s also recently renovated and decorated and a temporary London home which she’s renting with her family while their forever home is being renovated. And both of these homes feature stripy accents throughout – the most standout one being a striped sofa from Vogue’s collection with Sterling Home.

‘When I was designing that sofa, I was thinking whether people will be put off by the stripes because a sofa is such a big purchase, you’re getting it for 10 years. But people absolutely love it. I get loads of questions about that one all the time,’ Vogue says.

She adds, ‘I actually have a striped loveseat in my house in London as well. I snuck another one in.’

And as well as being available for a bargain price, it's lightweight and oven-safe. Here's a closer look at the set I'm sure is about to become an IKEA staple.

IKEA cookware has long been a mainstay of uni kitchens and first-time homes, but our five-star review of the brand's bestselling set (HEMKOMST) proved its more than a starter brand for pans. Its alternative to the bestselling Always Pan by Our Place, which I've also tried, is another hugely popular pick.

Now this new iteration, GULDÖRING, is bringing colour into the mix too. IKEA has experimented with colour and cookware before, but usually with products available for a limited run.

Burgundy was hailed by our Kitchen Editor, Holly Cockburn, as 'the colour replacing pink' in kitchens in 2026. It's a warm, cosy colour that clicks if you want to create a warm, inviting space.

'Burgundy has been a huge kitchen colour trend in 2026, and although it doesn't appear to be going anywhere, opting for burgundy cabinetry can feel risky,' says Holly.

'This cookware set from IKEA is a great way to try the trend without breaking the bank - I would keep them on show on either a stove top or via hanging pot storage to let the colour do the talking.'

Compared to the price of our best-rated pan set (Le Creuset's stainless steel set) this IKEA set is a steal, but it does feature a non-stick coating which some shoppers are looking to avoid with their next cookware purchase. The debate around non-stick coatings on pans is still very much alive and well but the bottom line is most budget pans will feature some kind of coating. It's definitely something worth thinking about as you invest in your next set.

Everyone knows that pets are members of the family, which means they also instantly become a physical and emotional extension of your home. But with many pets comes a lot of paraphernalia – from toys and feeding dishes, to grooming brushes and beds.

Unless you make a designated pet zone in your kitchen, chances are there will be traces of your furry friends all over the house. And, with all of this extra stuff to suddenly store, you’ll be forgiven if you feel like your pet is cramping your interior style slightly.

Dog crates are one of the trickiest pet items to house – they’re often big and bulky, and they’re not particularly renowned for their stylish designs. But, this chic option from Debenhams reimagines the dog crate entirely, so much so that I had to do a double-take!

I first saw this dog crate when content creator Zoe Rae (of @zoerae) shared it on her Instagram story. At first, I thought she was showing off a new country-style side table. So you can imagine my surprise when, on closer look, I realised this was actually not a stylish storage solution, but her dog’s new crate.

Whether your puppy is in the early stages of house training, or if you just want to create a sanctuary for your dog away from the chaos of everyday life, crates are a great solution. Yet they’re not always practical in homes that lack space, and they can be an eyesore for homes that prioritise style.

I can't say I’ve ever paid much attention to the aesthetics of a laundry basket until I spotted Next’s Natural Bow Laundry Sorter (£90). Its pretty design is proof that functional items can and should be beautiful.

When it comes to laundry, most will choose functionality over looks, but what if you could have both? Next’s stylish new laundry basket is not only perfect for sorting and separating laundry, but will make your utility room, bathroom or bedroom look better, too.

If you’re looking for small upgrades that will make your home look effortlessly cool, a statement laundry basket is a good place to start. But given that Next’s pretty storage solutions tend to sell out fast, get a wriggle on if you like what you see.

I’ve been burned by pretty Next products selling out fast before. When the Pink Stripe Frill Storage Drawers (£36) first dropped, they sold out faster than I could get my hands on them, and I’m not making that mistake again.

If you’re a fan of the bow trend that has been a huge home decor trend for a few years now, you’ll love this laundry basket. Its large, statement woven bow is what makes this basket a star. If you’re looking to add more characterful pieces to your home, a statement laundry basket like this will make your home look that little bit more whimsical.

While bows are trendy, let’s be honest, a little oversaturated now, I do think this laundry basket is a fun update on the look. Now I know pretty laundry baskets are a possibility, you best believe I’m investing in one as part of a mission to make my home look more fun.

Thanks to the UK’s increasingly hot summers, the RHS is considering relocating its Wisley hydrangeas to its northern Gardens. It’s a concerning move for hydrangea lovers in the south – but that doesn’t mean we should give up on our plants.

When you’re deciding where to plant hydrangeas, it’s always worth remembering that they’re woodland plants by nature, and they thrive in light shade. That means heatwaves and droughts are tricky conditions for the shrubs – but does that mean they’re no longer suitable for southern gardens?

Luckily, the answer is no. We spoke to RHS chief horticultural advisor Guy Barter to find out which varieties are most likely to thrive in southern gardens – and how to save the hydrangeas we already have.

This summer’s been a scorcher, and although there are ways to look after hydrangeas in a heatwave, I’ve spotted a lot of brown plants lately.

It makes sense, then, that the UK’s leading gardening charity is thinking about rehoming its RHS Wisley hydrangea collections in the north. We asked Guy about what's motivating the move.

‘RHS Wisley is a very dry area,’ Guy said. ‘It’s got very dry, sandy soil, so some hydrangea varieties in some parts of the garden can be under pressure in hot, dry weather. Rather than giving ourselves a lot of work to keep them watered and cared for, we’re thinking about relocating them to our northern gardens, where it’s moister, the soil is more water-retentive, and they’ll need less looking after.’

It’s no secret that hydrangeas are perfect for damp gardens, and that’s where they’ll put on their best displays. That’s why RHS Wisley is going to keep some hydrangeas on its north-facing slopes, for example – and you might already be growing your plants in similar conditions.

‘In many cases, hydrangeas will be growing in quite clay soil,’ said Guy. ‘They’ll be growing on north-facing slopes in light shade, perhaps from the house or a wall, so they’ll be in good condition already.’

Some species perform better in hot, dry conditions though.

‘Hydrangea paniculata is a little bit tougher than the mopheads and lacecaps, and that’s one of the ones we use a lot at Wisley,’ said Guy.

Hydrangea paniculata ‘Vanilla Fraise’, which you can buy from Gardening Express, is a popular variety. It produces gorgeous, pyramid-shaped clusters of white-to-pink flowers. For potted plants that can be moved around the garden, Guy recommended Hydrangea serrata ‘Bluebird’ (available at Thompson & Morgan) for silvery blue flowerheads.

If you’ve already planted your hydrangea and it’s struggling, Guy says a few August hydrangea care tasks can help get them back on track.

‘Keep watering, give them liquid fertiliser every fortnight if the potted ones aren’t looking good, and if they’re getting scorched, move the pot somewhere shadier,' he said.

Most importantly, Guy told us that it’s not the end of hydrangeas in the south.

‘Remember that we’re on the way down from summer now, so the nights are going to get longer and dewier, and the conditions are going to naturally get better for hydrangeas,’ Guy told us. ‘So, it’s well worth persisting and keeping them going.’

What you'll need

The RHS' news isn't a sentence for hydrangeas in the south, but it does mean it's wise to become more mindful about the way we grow the shrubs and the varieties that perform best in tough summers.

During hot weather, I’ve accepted that I need to empty my food waste bin daily or it will start to stink. But waste experts have just put me onto a slightly unconventional method that completely halts the decomposition process. All it requires is freezer space…

Even thinking about bad bin smells is enough to make me gag, so I welcome any method that promises to stop a bin from smelling the heat. Since the introduction of Simpler Recycling rules, every household in England will now have a food waste caddy in their kitchens.

If you’ve been struggling to stop your food waste bin from smelling, you might want to try this hack. Provided you have enough freezer space, all you have to do is put your food waste in the freezer and say goodbye to unpleasant aromas.

Can you put food waste in the freezer?

I’d first spotted this hack in the comment section of a TikTok and instantly baulked at the idea of putting my food waste in with my actual food. But the more I thought about it, the more it made sense - after all, freezing the food would halt the decomposition process - and so I decided to get an expert’s opinion.

‘Storing a food waste bin in the freezer can be a good idea, particularly during hot weather when food waste tends to break down more quickly, leaving unwanted odours. Freezing food waste helps slow bacterial growth, preventing the decomposition process that causes those unpleasant smells. This can make it a practical solution for households that struggle with smells in the kitchen,’ AO’s refrigeration expert, Jade Golding-Gault, explained to me.

‘The main benefit of this hack is it minimises unwanted odours in your kitchen. By keeping food waste frozen, you're pausing the processes that cause smells to develop. It can also help deter fruit flies and other pests that are attracted to food waste, which is particularly helpful in the summer when they are more common. For households with infrequent food waste collections, it can be an easy way to keep kitchens clean and fresh between pick-ups.’

Of course, the main drawback of this hack is that it requires a lot of space. If you have a small kitchen and even smaller fridge/ freezer, this hack might not be suitable for you. For example, I have an under-the-counter fridge/ freezer, and my freezer is one small drawer - so unfortunately, this won’t be a hack I can use.

‘Storing food waste scraps in the freezer takes up valuable space that could be used for real food, especially if you have a small freezer. After taking the frozen waste out of the freezer, there is the chance that the scraps may turn soft and begin to leak water as they warm up on the way to the bin. Wet or heavy waste can also tear thin plastic bags, causing additional cleanup,’ says Ryan Kalia, a waste and bin specialist at Kingfisher Direct.

There are also hygiene considerations to take into account, too. Unwanted odours can transfer into the food in your freezer if your waste isn’t sealed properly, and you should remember it will immediately start decomposing again once you remove it from the freezer - so you should only store it for a limited time.

If you do lack freezer space to try this hack, don’t worry; here are a few small space-friendly methods to stop your food waste bin from smelling.

‘Freezing food waste can be a useful option if you are bothered by odours or pests in your kitchen, but it shouldn't be necessary for every household. Regularly emptying your food waste bin, keeping it clean, using compostable liners and storing it away from direct sunlight can often be enough to keep odours under control. For those with limited freezer space, maintaining a clean food waste bin is usually a more practical long-term solution,’ concludes Jade.

It’s an unusual hack, but one that does work to reduce food waste smells - would you try it?

As whimsymaxxing has taken off as a trend in its own right this summer, again it's proof that people are looking to add items to their home that are as fun as they are functional. It’s true you don’t need a bold, ruffled lampshade; a plain one will do just fine - but where’s the fun in that?

Primark’s autumn collection has just dropped, and it’s jam-packed with the cutest pumpkin designs - these are the six pieces to buy now, before they go viral on TikTok.

As homeware brands have dropped their AW26 collections and set the home decor trends for the coming months, I’ve been eagerly awaiting to see what Primark unveils. Always offering surprisingly stylish homeware on a budget, this season is no exception.

Given that rusty orange hues are a defining colour that will dominate our homes this autumn, I’m not surprised to see that pumpkins feature heavily in this collection. But don’t let that put you off - there are plenty of hidden gems I predict will be popping up everywhere on social media in the following months.

While pumpkins have always been traditionally associated with Halloween decorating ideas, they now feature in most high street shops' autumnal collections. And don’t expect to find any spookiness in this collection; Primark’s pumpkin ornaments are actually quite tasteful. In particular, the Pumpkin Ceramic Oven Dish (£12) caught my eye. I’m a sucker for pretty cookware.

We're firmly in the era of frill-maxxing, and if you're anything like me, there aren't many things left in my home that haven't fallen victim to the trend. When it comes to the kitchen, however, it's a little harder to find frilly items that are practical too.

When I saw Dunelm had released a frilly drying mat for dishes, I knew it was destined to complete a country kitchen aesthetic. The kitchen trend for frilly-edged decor isn't going anywhere, and for just £8, you can easily incorporate the look while also fixing a genuine kitchen frustration.

Dish drying racks and mats are often metal or silicone, so finding a stylish choice is the perfect way to upgrade your kitchen on a budget.

When it comes to finding a dish rack for your kitchen, many of the options are utilitarian. The same can be said for dish mats, which are usually grey or black and made of silicone.

While practical, these items can cause a visual obstruction in your kitchen and make cluttered dishes look even worse. So when I saw this Dunelm frilly dish mat, I was genuinely impressed by the ingenuity.

It's generated mixed opinions across the Ideal Home team. While we all appreciated the adorable frilly-edged design, there were some concerns about how it would stand up to everyday use, and it would require washing in the machine regularly.

However, I envision this being used for rarer events, such as hosting. On a daily basis, my dishwasher does the brunt work of my washing up, but it's when hosting that I really make the most out of a dish drying mat for glassware that must be hand-washed and larger pieces of crockery.

It's also a great way to hide an unaesthetic metal draining board. I live in a rented flat and have inherited an undermount sink with a silver draining board, so this Dunelm mat would be an affordable way to hide the stark, clinical look.

If you regularly find yourself using folded tea towels to protect your surfaces from dripping crockery or even your sink essentials (mine is a huge pet peeve), then this is a great solution.

It’s been a hot summer with less rain than average, which means there is an increased risk of fire in your garden. So, I asked garden experts to share the hidden fire risks in a garden during a heatwave, and these are the five things they said.

Prolonged heat and dry weather can turn your garden into a fire risk, as dried-out grass, wooden fencing and even compost heaps become more flammable during a heatwave.

So, if you’re looking to heatproof your garden this summer and maintain a safe environment, here are five risks you need to be aware of.

1. Garden mirrors

While garden mirrors can be used as a clever trick to make your garden look bigger, they can also increase your risk of fire during periods of hot, dry weather.

‘If a mirror or reflective ornament is positioned in direct sunlight, it can create intense hot spots, so it's best to move them away from dry plants, fences and sheds as a precaution,’ says Luke Newnes, garden expert at Hillarys.

Plus, birds are vulnerable to flying into mirrors, so they are best avoided if you have a wildlife garden anyway.

2. BBQs

While the best BBQs are a summer staple, it’s also unsurprising that they carry a great fire risk, too. So, if you plan on grilling up a storm, you need to be aware of the safety risks, too.

‘Safety is an absolute must when it comes to using your fire pit or BBQ, especially during hot and dry conditions. While positioning it near seating is great for making the most of the equipment, avoid placing it too close to ensure everyone stays a safe distance from the heat and fire. Aim for at least seven feet between the seating and the fire pit or BBQ,’ says Adam Oldfield from outdoor living specialists StovesAreUs.

‘You should also position it in an area with ample clearance from surrounding hedges, trees, sheds, and the house to minimise fire hazards and ensure proper ventilation. You should position fire pits, BBQs and outdoor heaters on level ground, away from foot traffic and avoid placing them on grass or wooden decking. In regards to BBQs, never use petrol or other accelerants to start a fire, and only burn high-quality charcoal that is intended for BBQs. Keep a safe distance while lighting, and allow coals to cool completely before disposing of them.’

3. Outdoor electrical equipment

Heat and electricals don’t tend to mesh well together, so make sure to check your garden lighting, cables and tools for damage, and ensure they don’t overheat, either.

‘Outdoor electrical equipment is another area that deserves attention. Garden lighting, extension cables and water feature pumps are easy to forget about, particularly if they've been outside for several seasons. If something is damaged or weathered, hot conditions can make problems worse, so it's worth giving everything a quick check and switching off anything that isn't needed,’ says Luke.

4. Garden waste

Right now, gardens will be very dry, making your garden waste, for example grass cuttings, more flammable.

‘Keeping your garden well-maintained can help reduce the risk of fire. Keep lawns short around patios, sheds and fences, and remove any piles of dry grass clippings. If conditions are particularly hot and dry, avoid using petrol lawn mowers, as hot engines can ignite dry material,’ says Tom Douglas, Senior Gardening Buyer, Plant Buyer at Cherry Lane Garden Centres.

‘Clear away dry leaves and garden debris from around decking, fences and outdoor seating areas, and make sure barbecues and fire pits are positioned well away from anything flammable. Where possible, replace mulch with gravel around cooking and entertaining areas, as gravel is far less likely to catch fire.

‘Compost heaps can also generate heat, so keep them moist during prolonged dry spells and turn them regularly to release any built-up heat.’

5. BBQ and fire pit ash

Lastly, as well as your BBQ, you need to keep an eye on its ash as well. This means not disposing of ash straight away, and allowing it to fully cool first.

‘Old barbecue ash is another commonly overlooked risk. Many people assume everything is safe once the flames have gone out, but charcoal and ash can hold heat for longer than expected. During a dry spell, it's always worth making sure barbecues, fire pits and ash containers have completely cooled and been stored safely,’ says Luke.

'Prolonged heat and dry weather can quickly turn an ordinary garden into a fire risk, as dried-out lawns, timber fencing, compost heaps and decorative mulch can all become highly combustible during a heatwave,’ Tom concludes.

So, it’s important to assess the risks facing your garden and act accordingly. As always, prevention is better than a cure.

Last week, in the midst of one of this summer's many heatwaves, I hosted eight of my friends in my garden as part of my hen do celebrations. I say 'host' loosely, as my job was simply to prepare the outdoor furniture and supply the hosting/kitchen essentials while my friends acted as chef, bar staff and waiters.

I thought I had everything covered to get my small garden ready to host. I'd invested in a £35 folding table from B&Q and some metal folding chairs from Habitat so everyone had a seat (but I could fold them away afterwards). I also pulled out my Shark FlexBreeze HydroGo Misting Fan, £129.99 at Shark, to help keep everyone cool, and used my Roberts Revival Petite 2 Radio, £99 at John Lewis, as a speaker for music.

However, I quickly realised I'd neglected several small details that would have made all the difference when hosting people outdoors in this current heat. Here are the buys I'll be picking up before my next garden party.

1. Drinks cooler

My garden is tiny, and I figured I'd have no need for an outdoor cooler as my fridge is right next to the back door, barely 20 paces from the table. How wrong I was.

Whether you're drinking beer, cocktails or fizz, keeping guests' drinks topped up is a full job. Even with my fridge so close, it felt like a chore to tear yourself away from the conversations to grab a top-up of bubbly, and it was too hot to leave more than one bottle out at a time.

Next party, I'm planning to invest in either a chic metal cooler that I can fill with ice to keep bottles chilled or a full cool box instead of an outdoor fridge. I'm currently eyeing up the Argos Campos 25L Cool Box in green, which is £18 and would blend in beautifully with my mini outdoor kitchen.

2. Ice maker

Even though I'd purposely gone out to buy a new bag of ice on the morning of the party, we still blasted through it in topping up the soft drink pitcher alone. Next time I'm investing in an ice maker like this £99 from John Lewis. It produces 12kg of ice in 24 hours; for comparison, the average bag you can buy at the supermarket typically weighs around 2kg.

While I'm calling it a hosting essential, the rate I've been getting through ice this summer and the strain it's put on my ice tray, an ice maker would pay for itself in no time.

3. Fly fans

When eating outside flies are always a pain, but this year (along with wasps) they've been next level. Once the food was out on the table, especially when it came to the cakes or sweet treats, we were dive-bombed by every flying insect and bug around.

I'd been relying on citronella candles to try and keep the flies away, but next time I'm investing in fly fans to protect the food. You'll often see them used abroad in holiday resorts or at food markets in summer.

4. Parasol or gazebo

This is going to sound like a no-brainer, but I made the crucial mistake of not buying a parasol or shade structure back in late spring when there were plenty of budget versions available. I live in a north-facing garden, and so figured I could get away with the natural shade my fence and house provided. I should have known better.

While the day of the actual event wasn't as hot as it had been, I still managed to get sunburnt, and we had to keep a close eye on the clotted cream and any iced cakes on the table, which swiftly turned into little puddles.

5. Seat pads

I own two seat pads already, but shamefully it didn't occur to me to invest in some extra sets for the additional folding chairs and garden chairs I put out in the garden. It took my friends deciding who was wearing the most suitable outfit to risk sitting on the (baking hot) metal chairs for me to realise my mistake.

I always think seat pads are a lovely addition to personalise a bistro set, but I'm investing in a couple of back-up pads ahead of my next event to use on my metal folding seats and to make my mismatched indoor and outdoor seating combination look a little more uniform.

If you're hosting a couple of summer gatherings and realise, like me, you're missing one of these hosting essentials, I'd recommend buying fast. Outdoor furniture stock at the best places to buy garden furniture are dwindling fast, as are other outdoor hosting essentials, so my advice is to buy now or regret later.

As I write, I’m looking at my tiny kitchen, and I’m determined to put some small kitchen storage ideas to good use. When you lack space, organisation and a few clever storage solutions are paramount for a tidy kitchen - and I’ve definitely seen my space descend into chaos when I lack these features.

Lidl’s new fridge and cupboard organisers drop on Sunday (2 August), and I’m not missing out on the opportunity to smarten up my cabinets and organise my fridge more efficiently.

For context, I have a small fridge and freezer built into my worktop, and about two kitchen cupboards for food storage. One of these cabinets has become a mini seasoning pantry, where I keep all my spices. Using my trusty shelf inserts (like this £16 Argos Home insert), these items all stay relatively tidy.

I can’t say the same about my dry goods, which seem to be in a permanent state of disarray. But this is where Lidl’s Kitchen Cupboard Organiser With Three Compartments (£1.99) will come in handy when organising kitchen cupboards. With three equally spaced compartments, it’s ideal for storing bags of rice, pasta and orzo (all of which are currently shoved in my cupboard with no thought behind it).

If you like multiple cheeses, you can keep them together, or if you haven’t already invested in a produce saver, it can keep fresh produce in one place - reducing your chance of forgetting about veg in the back of the fridge.

Lidl also has a Kitchen Cupboard Organiser With Handles, which is a large container measuring L25.4 x W15.2 x H12.7cm. The brand will also be selling a more space-saving Kitchen Cupboard Organiser With Lower Front, which can store everything from fresh fruit to canned goods.

All organisers can handle a range of temperatures from -20 to 40°C and are made from transparent plastic to make it easy to identify their contents. The products will only be available in store. If you don’t have a Lidl local to you, I’ve rounded up a few more affordable options you can shop online.

A tidy and organised kitchen really does make all the difference on how it operates, and whether you actually enjoy spending time in yours. These Lidl organisers may seem like a small detail, but they will make a big difference to the run of your kitchen.

I love linen bedding. As Ideal Home's Sleep Editor, I've spent the past five years testing the best bedding on the market, and, as a hot sleeper, I've learnt that I definitely sleep best under a cool and breathable linen bedding set.

You’ll probably already be aware mosquitoes prefer standing water, making your bird bath a prime spot for these pests. However, I've just discovered the best and prettiest way to overcome this issue: adding a solar water fountain (£9.99, Amazon) to a bird bath. It is an easy hack that deters mosquitoes and turns your bird bath into a pretty water feature that birds will still visit.

When attempting to get rid of mosquitoes from your garden, removing all stagnant water is a must. But as it's also essential to leave water out if you want to help birds in hot weather, you may have found yourself at a crossroads.

Luckily, you don’t have to choose one or the other. Adding a solar fountain to your bird bath helps keep the water moving (deterring mosquitoes from choosing it as a breeding site), whilst still attracting birds to your garden.

The reason why mosquitoes seek standing water is that it acts as a safe nursery for their babies. Moving water risks washing their eggs and larvae away, so mosquitoes instinctively lay their eggs in still water. Larvae also need still water, as they need air to breathe from the surface. It’s easy for larvae to stay at the surface of standing water.

Unfortunately, this means your bird bath is an ideal area for mosquitoes to breed. Birds are just as prone to mosquitoes as we humans, so you should learn how to keep mosquitoes away from a bird bath. A small solar fountain or submersible pump that keeps water moving continuously breaks the breeding cycle completely without any chemicals or harm to wildlife. It costs around £20 to £40 and is one of the most effective long-term interventions for a garden that includes standing water,’ explains Mosh Latifi, Co-Owner, EcoCare Pest Management.

Not only will a solar fountain stop your bird bath from turning into a stagnant breeding ground, but its relaxing trickles also mean it becomes a budget water feature idea for your garden, too. DIY water features have been a huge trend for 2026, and this simple hack feeds beautifully into the trend, whilst keeping your garden birds happy and healthy.

Birds also prefer moving water as it looks more similar to the streams they visit in the wild. Birds not only use bird baths to wash, but to play as well, and a solar fountain makes your bird bath more stimulating.

You still will have to clean your bird bath regularly, and during mosquito season, it is recommended to change the water in your bath every couple of days. I also recommend adding a copper disc to your bird bath (you can get one for £9.98 on Amazon) as this helps reduce algae buildup, which is also harmful to birds.

Solar fountains are affordable, will make your bird bath more visually stimulating for you and your garden birds, and, most importantly, will prevent mosquitoes from breeding. It’s a genuine win-win.

When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. You know the saying. But you may not have heard of lemonading, an emerging garden trend that focuses on making your garden’s imperfections work in your favour - and following this summer’s relentless heatwaves, now is the perfect time to get started.

One thing that’s abundantly clear from this year’s garden trends is that resilient, hardy gardens are everyone’s goal in 2026. We want plants that withstand heatwaves and landscaping ideas that can go toe to toe with flood risk, and it needs to look good while doing so.

Interestingly, the lemonading approach is one of the best ways to achieve a resilient garden. By embracing your garden’s flaws, rather than trying to ‘fix’ them, you can build an outdoor space that can withstand the elements and look good all year round.

What is lemonading?

While a perfectly manicured garden is no more than a dream for most of us. I’m not saying it to be disheartening, but your garden will have flaws, and instead of wasting time, money and energy trying to fix them, why not embrace them? Plus, considering your garden is probably a little battered and bruised after this year’s intense heatwave, there are likely plenty of imperfections to embrace.

‘As a gardener, I think the 'lemonading' trend is a really positive approach, particularly after the recent heatwaves. The idea comes from the saying 'when life gives you lemons, make lemonade', and in the garden it's all about turning challenges into opportunities rather than focusing on what's gone wrong,’ says Luke Newnes, gardening expert at Hillarys.

‘For me, ‘lemonading’ means working with nature instead of against it. If a plant struggles in the heat, I see it as a chance to find a variety that's better suited to those conditions. If a self-seeded flower appears somewhere unexpected and thrives, I'll often embrace it rather than pull it out. It's about being flexible, creative and open-minded.’

Naturally, this trend lends itself to wildlife-friendly garden ideas and rewilding as it encourages us to let nature influence our gardens.

‘Some of the most beneficial things we can do for nature come from allowing our gardens to be a little less controlled. By giving plants space to grow, welcoming wildflowers and creating habitats for insects and other wildlife, we can turn small garden moments into something that has a much bigger impact,’ adds Dr Emily Attlee, conservation scientist and co-founder of the original seed ball company, Seedball.

How to follow the trend

‘Lemonading in the garden is about working with nature rather than trying to control every element of your outdoor space. It could be as simple as leaving a small patch of lawn to grow longer, allowing wildflowers to self-seed, or planting a mix of native and wildlife-friendly flowers that will provide food for pollinators throughout the seasons,’ says Dr Emily.

‘Instead of removing every plant that appears unexpectedly, take a moment to see what it might be. Many wild plants that are often considered weeds can be incredibly valuable sources of nectar, pollen and shelter for insects,' she adds.

‘In my own garden, I like to leave room for things to surprise me. Allowing plants to grow naturally and seeing which species arrive brings a sense of discovery and helps create a more varied habitat for wildlife. Every flower, seed and plant plays a role in supporting biodiversity – whether that’s providing nectar for bees, food for birds or shelter for small insects.'

Lemonading looks different in every garden. So I asked our experts and some of the Ideal Home team how they use the lemonading trend in their garden.

‘When I moved into my house, I inherited a garden filled with sedums, which I wasn’t sure that I liked. However, I kept them as they were so well established, and now I love how many bees and butterflies they attract in late summer. Plus, they’re one of the few plants in my garden that have been LOVING this hot and sunny summer, and they haven’t needed any watering.

‘Three years into stewarding this garden, I’ve also discovered that (unsurprisingly) nature is far better at planting than I am. Very few of the verbena I planted have come through, but the ones that have self-seeded have found the exact conditions they need in the garden and are absolutely thriving. I’m definitely discovering successful gardening is often about relaxing control and letting nature do its thing - so I’m fully in favour of lemonading!’

'I inherited a rather badly paved little courtyard garden, the pavers had no grout between them which means weeds are constantly growing up between them. However this summer I decided to stop fighting the weeds and work with them to create a patchwork patio. I only pull up the particularly tall or out of place ones, but I've left any small or ground cover weeks to fill in the gaps in my patio.'

'In my dog's puppy stage, she used to dig a lot in the garden and left me with some huge holes that I filled, but they've never looked quite right since. Now I'm inspired to create a new flower bed and add some more colour to my garden.'

Start lemonading in your garden

‘It's [lemonading] definitely a principle I use in my own gardening. No garden is ever perfect, and some of the best results come from unexpected discoveries or lessons learned when things don't go to plan. With extreme weather becoming more common, I think gardeners who embrace a lemonading mindset will find it easier to create resilient, beautiful spaces that can cope with whatever the seasons throw at them,’ Luke concludes.

Patio water features are one of the hottest garden trends this summer, but I’ve just spotted the best one yet on Instagram, and its creator has revealed all about how to get the look at home.

Water feature trends, particularly DIY ideas, have been a huge garden trend this year on account of the fact that they create calming, wildlife-friendly environments that are beautiful to look at. Not to mention, the popularity of solar water fountains means it’s so easy to create a striking display.

If you’re looking to make your own water feature, I’d implore you to first check out content creator Anna Louisa’s (@anna_louise_at_home) stunning example, complete with a solar fountain and blooms - it’s an elevated take on an already stylish trend.

Everywhere I turn this summer, I’ve spotted DIY water features, whereby creators use a large planter filled with pebbles and water, topped off with a solar fountain (like this Amazon £9.99 one). The DIY hack is incredibly simple, affordable and suitable for small patios, too. Seeing how accessible it makes a bespoke garden water feature, it’s easy to understand why this trend has really taken off.

We’ve even seen other brands try to get in on the hype, including Aldi’s £13 solar fountain, which took the middle aisle by storm and QVC’s stunning tiered terracotta water feature. But the water feature that has impressed me the most has to be content creator and author of The 5 Minute Clean, Anna Lousia.

Anna took two larger planters, using the base layer to plant beautiful blooms and foliage, before filling the top planter with white pebbles, water and, of course, a solar fountain. With wheels on the base to make it easy to move around her patio, the water feature was complete.

Displaying her method in an Instagram reel, it’s easy to get the look, too. Anna filled the base of her larger planter with polystyrene bricks to save on compost and make it lighter. She also added bedding plants for immediate impact. The water aspect is even easier. The solar fountain charges in the sun, releasing a constant spray of water.

‘I love finding simple ideas that can make a space feel better without spending a fortune. This DIY water fountain was really easy to put together, and it’s made such a difference to our garden! It’s now one of my favourite spots to sit and relax,’ Anna told me.

Since posting the reel, Anna’s followers advised adding a copper disc (£7.99, Amazon) to prevent algae building up in the water - it’s also a great tip to keep your bird bath clean, too!

Did you know that birds can’t sweat? Me neither, which is why I’ve asked wildlife experts what we should do to help our feathered friends during the summer and reduce their risk of overheating.

If you’re someone who likes to attract birds to a garden, you may have noticed a few of your visiting birds struggling a little in the heat. This summer has been a scorcher, with less rain than usual, hence the importance of supporting birds in hot weather.

As birds don’t sweat, they use other methods, like panting, to help them stay cool. But if you want to lend a helping hand, too, here are the garden adjustments wildlife experts recommend.

Why don't birds sweat?

Birds don’t have sweat glands, which is why they can’t sweat as we do. Instead, they evaporate water via their respiratory tract, which means they pant. Birds are warm-blooded, with most maintaining an internal temperature of around 40 degrees Celsius, and panting is one way they regulate their body temperature when the mercury spikes.

‘Sweating would actually be less effective for them because their feathers provide insulation and would make it difficult for moisture to evaporate efficiently,’ explains Richard Scholfield, Wildlife Expert at Woodlands.co.uk.

‘One of the most common ways birds cool down is through a behaviour called panting, where they breathe rapidly with their beaks open to increase heat loss. Some species also use a process known as gular fluttering, which involves vibrating the thin skin in their throat to boost evaporation and cooling without using as much energy as panting.’

‘You may also notice birds holding their wings slightly away from their bodies to allow air to circulate their skin, or seeking shade during the hottest part of the day. Many species will bathe more frequently in warm weather, using water to cool down and keep their feathers in good condition.’

What are the signs a bird is overheating?

While birds are experts at regulating their own temperature, there are instances where they overheat, and this can sometimes prove fatal. Prolonged exposure to extreme heat can cause heat stress, exhaustion and dehydration. So, it can be helpful to recognise the signs of overheating.

‘If you think a bird is overheating, check for panting, wings held out from the body and fluffed feathers. Birds that are too hot may appear sluggish, remain on the ground, or lose their balance when trying to perch,' explains Lucy Taylor, a wildlife expert from Vine House Farm.

If you notice a bird struggling, provide cool, fresh water in a shallow dish, and ensure your garden has shade. You should not handle the bird unless it is an emergency, and consult a local wildlife rescue for help.'

How to support birds during summer

If you want your wildlife garden to be able to support birds in hot weather, you need to provide both shade and water. Consider planting plants that provide shade, such as silver birch trees, and ensure you have a bird bath (£30, B&Q) that you regularly clean and refill with fresh water.

‘To support birds during the heat, you should leave out water for them to use. Birds will drink the water and bathe in it, which helps them cool down. You do not necessarily need a bird bath for this, as a shallow dish will work as long as it is stable and cleaned regularly. Adding a few small stones is also helpful, as this gives birds somewhere to perch. Place the water in the shade if possible, and top it up daily. As bacteria and fungi thrive in the heat, you will need to clean bird baths more often. Use hot, soapy water or a mild disinfectant, rinse thoroughly and allow the bath to dry before refilling,’ says Lucy.

Richard also points out the importance of not disturbing nesting birds. Not only is it illegal to interfere with their nests under the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981, but it can cause excess stress and increase the risk of overheating.

‘Creating shady areas in the garden can also make a big difference. Trees, shrubs, hedges, and dense planting shelter birds from direct sunlight and help them conserve energy. Avoid disturbing nesting or resting birds during very hot weather, as unnecessary activity can increase their risk of overheating,’ he says.

If you love seeing birds visit your garden, it's important to make your outdoor a hospitable envrionment, whatever the weather.

It may be July, but for many homeware brands, it’s also the time to unveil their autumn collections for the upcoming season. No exception is high street brand Matalan, and I’m seriously impressed with the grown-up yet cosy style they’ve plumped for.

While I don’t advocate for wishing away summer, now is a good time to start browsing the AW26 collections if you want to keep ahead of the home decor trends of this year. Matalan is an underrated place to look for affordable yet on-trend homeware. The brand has given its pumpkin-esque homeware a grown-up spin, with a neutral colour palette and subtle-y playful motifs.

As someone who doesn’t usually subscribe to autumn decorating ideas (my decor doesn’t change much throughout the year), it’s not often I see seasonally themed decor I actually like. However, I can imagine the green pumpkin ornaments (£6) making a cheery yet cosy addition to my bookshelf. I also rate the Cream Pumpkin Candle Holder (£12), which is perfect for adding a subtle, autumnal look to a coffee table.

In 2026, the best air fryers have a spot in every kitchen, yet most are quite bulky. But the increase in popularity of glass air fryers over the past year shows that these game-changing appliances can work in the tiniest of kitchens.

Landing in stores on Sunday 2 August, Lidl’s Glass Air Fryer is a deadringer for the Ninja Crispi (was £149.99, now £115 at Shark Ninja), and at only £49.99, It’s one of the most affordable Ninja Crispi alternatives I’ve spotted.

Having reviewed the Ninja Crispi, Ideal Home’s Kitchen Appliances Editor Molly Cleary declared she’d only use the glass air fryer from then on. Its easy-to-clean glass containers were found to be excellent for making lunches and meal prep, while its compact size meant it was easy to stash away after use, too - no bulky appliance taking up precious worktop space here. Not to mention it produces unbelievably delicious and crispy results.

The convenience of glass air fryers has seen them soar in popularity, and now it’s Lidl’s turn to deliver an affordable version. If you have Lidl Plus, the Glass Fryer is £49.99, and it is £59.99 without the app discount.

It boasts a transparent glass cooking basket, allowing you to keep an eye on how your food is cooking without opening the drawer (one of the main benefits of glass air fryers over standard ones), and it promises to deliver healthy, crispy results with ease. Lidl also states the machine is easy to clean, which is a bonus. For squeaky clean air fryers, I do recommend the Astonish Air Fryer Cleaner(£2.50, Dunelm) as it is great for cutting through grease.

Lidl’s Silvercrest Glass Air Fryer has four preset programs: air fry, roast, re-fry, and keep warm. Its small glass container is ideal for one portion, while the supermarket says its large container is big enough to roast a whole chicken.

‘I was unsure of the concept of glass air fryers at first, but after testing the Ninja Crispi I was totally won over. I can't imagine a better air fryer design for a student house or a small kitchen in order to feed one or two people,' comments Molly. 'If you're on a tight budget, then this version from Lidl might be worth a try. The glass surface is much easier to clean than a usual air fryer tray and will be so easy to pop into a deep drawer too.'

Glass air fryers are a great choice for people who have small kitchens, students and anyone else who doesn’t want to give up worktop space for bulky appliances. They offer a great vantage point, where you can see how your food is cooking. The detachable glass dishes make meal prep incredibly easy, and the glass is far easier to clean than other air fryers.

I've seen this bread bin appear in some seriously stylish kitchens, so naturally I just assumed it was from a high-end brand with a price tag that is much more than I'd ever willingly spend on a bread bin.

So when I saw the same style crop up on my search for some of Amazon's very best kitchenware picks, I knew it was worth shouting about.

While many other kitchen gadgets and storage options evolve, with more interesting style choices available as time moves on, the bread bin feels like it's been left behind.

Plug-in solar panels could be available to buy in the UK soon after the 27 August 2026, when updated legislation comes into effect.

Back in March, the Government announced that plug-in solar panels would be available 'within months', offering households across the UK a chance to offset their energy bills by generating their own electricity at home. Panels like this are already widely used across parts of Europe, and are both renter friendly and considerably more affordable than rooftop solar installations.

But in order for plug-in solar panels to legally sold in the UK, certain regulations around plugs and sockets needed to be updated to allow power generating tech, like plug-in solar panels, to be self-installed and used safely. The government consulted with industry professionals on proposed changes, saying that it wanted to move 'at pace' to bring plug-in solar panels to UK homes.

Those legislative amendments have now been laid before Parliament and are due to come into force on Thursday 27 August 2026, and we expect retailers, like Lidl, Amazon, Currys and B&Q, to make their plug-in solar panels offerings available to buy on or soon after that date.

'We are working closely with government and suppliers to understand and help shape the guidance, ensuring any products we offer are safe, compliant and straightforward to install,' says Graham Bell, CEO of B&Q. 'We look forward to making plug-in solar available to our customers as soon as possible.'

There is also hope that these legislative changes are just the beginning, and will open the door for even more affordable and easy to install technology to become available to those in the UK.

'The Government's announcement is a really important step towards making solar energy available to far more people across the UK,' says Aaron James Darvill, Strategic Sales Director at Anker SOLIX. 'Until now, generating your own electricity has largely been limited to homeowners with the right roof and the budget for a full solar installation. Plug-in solar changes that. It gives renters, people living in flats and households without suitable roofs a simpler and more affordable way to get started.'

'While this is a major milestone, battery storage will be the next important step. Plug-in solar generates the most electricity during the day, but most households use the most energy in the evening. Without battery storage, consumers can't store surplus energy to use when they need it most, limiting the savings and flexibility the technology can deliver.

'Across Europe, we’ve seen that people rarely buy their final solar energy system on day one. They start small, see the benefits for themselves and then add more panels or battery storage as their needs grow. We expect the UK to follow a similar path, with battery storage playing an increasingly important role in helping households maximise the value of the energy they generate and reduce their reliance on the grid. We're also encouraged that a regulatory framework for plug-in battery storage is expected to follow, helping ensure these systems can be adopted safely and with confidence.'

Patio water features have been a huge trend in small and large gardens this summer. Whether it's a DIY micro pond or a statement planter water fountain, these garden features have been taking over my Instagram feed.

However, as someone who doesn't have the budget for a £100+ water feature and loves the idea of a budget DIY alternative but lacks the execution skills, I've been hunting high and low to find an expensive-looking ready-made version under £100. Finally, this week I stumbled across a gem when scrolling through QVC: the Sara by Sara Davies Water Feature & Planter.

My curiosity was already piqued when I saw that the crafting queen and Dragon's Den star had launched an outdoor collection at QVC, but I was not prepared for how hard I'd fall for the £80 water feature and planter. I'm snapping the terracotta version up for my garden as soon as payday arrives.

The water feature comes in terracotta and blue, and is made up of two bowls stacked together, with a geometric design printed around the edges. The bottom bowl is the planter, which can be filled with trailing ivy, geraniums or even easy-to-care-for succulents for a more classic Mediterranean garden look.

The top bowl is the one filled with water, with a fountain mechanism running through it. When turned on, the fountain LED lights produce a gentle glow and the water bubbles gently through the top bowl.

It is a small water feature, it measures 38cm in diameter and 22cm tall, which makes it perfect for complementing small garden ideas, styled alongside a cluster of other containers. Alternatively, I love the idea of styling it on an outdoor coffee table or a side table to make it a bigger focal point on a patio. For a striking look, pair it with the matching Sara by Sara Davies Indoor Outdoor Geometric Pattern Side Table, £55 at QVC.

I have hunted around for similar water feature ideas, and as I said earlier, most versions on the high street that look as good as this one come in over £100. While you can make your own DIY planter fountain for under £80, it will still easily cost you £20 for just one similar-sized terracotta plant pot.

The biggest downside to the water feature is that it is mains-operated rather than solar-powered, with a 2m cable. That is actually a plus for my little north-facing garden, where I struggle to get enough sunlight to power my solar-powered garden lights.

However, if you don't have an outdoor mains supply or want to position it in the far corner of the garden, you are best off looking at one of these other water features I've found.

It can be hard to strike the balance between a cluttered countertop and a well-stocked one, especially when creating a dedicated space for making tea and coffee. The debate on what should be left on a kitchen worktop and what should be tidied away is always alive and well at Ideal Home towers. If there's one thing we all agree on though, its that one of the the things that people with a tidy kitchen worktop always have is a clutter bucket or tray to collect loose items.

Sofas are investment pieces. Working in interiors, I'm well aware that a good one doesn't come cheap. However, now and again, I come across those unicorn sofas that are not only design-forward, well-reviewed and under the £250 mark, and that is exactly what the £209 Marseille 2 seater sofa at Dusk is.

The online homeware store, Dusk, is already famous on the Ideal Home desk for delivering high-end looks with low price tags. However, right now they are holding one of their many big sales, making their luxe-looking furniture, best sofas and home accessories even more affordable.

The Marseille range of sofas and armchairs is relatively new, launching as part of the Dusk SS26 collection. At full price, the range was already incredibly affordable, with the most expensive sofa, the Marseille 3-seater, costing £449 (currently reduced to £404), and the 2-seater sofa in Latte has been reduced from £349 to £209.

The Marseille sofas are available in two colours, Chenille Ivory and Latte. The Latte colourway in the 2-seater has the biggest saving on it, with £140 knocked off the price, while the Ivory 2-seater has only been reduced by £30 from £299 to £269.

However, even at the slightly higher price, this sofa is a steal (even for a two-seater). It's a price point I've only seen rivalled at IKEA, Habitat and Dunelm, and trust me, they look nowhere near as stylish.

What makes the Marseille sofa look so expensive?

It's the sculptural arm shape that makes the sofa, and its armchair counterpart, which is currently reduced from £259 to £155, look so expensive. The curved arm is a design feature I've only seen in higher-end designs, such as the Rockett St George Ivory Boucle Fabric Curved Arm Armchair, which was priced at £1,340 but is now on sale for £670.

I also love the luxurious-looking latte colourway; however, I am holding out hope that the sofa will soon be available in the rich terracotta colourway they've launched the Marseille armchair in, priced at £233 (down from £259).

Of course, there will be compromises you have to make with any sofa under £300. In the case of the Dusk Marseille sofa, the main ones I can spot are the extra support leg poking out of the middle of the seat and the thin-looking cushions.

However, the reviews of the range rave about the comfort and design. 'The design is a little different and gets lots of compliments, it's also comfy!' writes one reviewer. 'The sofa looks so modern and stylish. Easy to assemble and so comfortable. Such good quality but not pricey at all,' writes another.

The summer sale won't be on forever, so if you love the look of this sofa or the matching armchair, I'd move fast. However, don't forget to factor in the delivery cost to the final price. For the two-seater sofa, you will need the two-man X-Large Box delivery, which should work out around £40.

Dusk also has been known to have long lead times on its furniture; however, for these particular sofas, I've found delivery slots available from 29th July.

This isn't the only item I'm eyeing up in the Dusk summer sale. Here are the other design-forward buys I'm planning to snap up to give my home a luxe look on a budget.

New Prime Minister Andy Burnham has announced that VAT will be cut from household electricity bills from 1 October 2026.

The move, which will see 5% VAT reduced to zero, is expected to cut around £45 from typical annual electricity bills over winter, and will be welcome news to those who already go to significant lengths to save energy at home and reduce their monthly bills.

Speaking less than 48-hours into his new role, Prime Minister Andy Burnham said: 'I said I wanted to give people breathing space, and that’s what I’m announcing on my second day as Prime Minister.

'We’re taking immediate action to cut taxes on energy bills, put more money in people’s pockets and bring back hope.

'Cutting VAT on electricity bills is expected to take around £45 off the yearly Ofgem price cap in October.'

The reduction is set to be passed on to the millions of households in England, Wales and Scotland via their suppliers and is expected to include those on both fixed and standard variable tariffs. While some measures of energy bill relief over recent years have only been available to those in receipt of certain benefits, no such eligibility criteria has been announced for this VAT reduction.

Rules work slightly differently in Northern Ireland, but the government has said that the NI Executive will receive comparable funding to enable it to similarly support households in Northern Ireland.

While the energy price cap figure for the period between 1 October and 31 December 2026 has yet to be announced by the energy regulator Ofgem, current predictions from analysts at Cornwall Insight have the cap sitting at around £1,849 (based on the current typical domestic consumption values of 2,700 kWh per annum for electricity and 11,500 kWh per annum for gas). As a comparison, the current energy price cap is set at £1,862.

The official price cap figure for autumn will be announced on 26 August, and will be calculated using new typical domestic consumption values to reflect a fall in the average household's energy use.

Is it enough to help struggling households?

Is an average £45 annual reduction enough to help households struggling with high electricity bills? In isolation, probably not. But it's a step in the right direction to provide some relief, especially at a time when households are more likely to be using more electricity hungry appliances, like tumble dryers.

When combined with other electricity saving measures, from simply turning off vampire appliances to more involved solutions like investing in plug-in solar panels (when they become available) or a rooftop solar panel array, households can also reduce their energy consumption to lower their bills.

If you are still concerned you won't be able to pay your energy bills over the colder months, reach out to your supplier in the first instance. They will be able to help move you on to a cheaper tariff if applicable, or check your eligibility for further assistance.

TikTok has whipped itself up into a frenzy over B&M’s inflatable footstools, but after taking one look at their space-saving design and stylish material, I’m surprised to say I'm a fan of this trending buy.

B&M is no stranger to social media infamy. Only recently, their Brunch Club tableware collection sold out after going viral across TikTok and Instagram, and now, small living room dwellers will want to get a wriggle on if they want to snap up this latest favourite.

Costing just £12, B&M’s Home Collection Square Inflatable Footstool is perfect for small spaces. If you want somewhere to rest your feet for an evening, but don’t want to give up precious floor space indefinitely, you don’t want to miss this.

Even though I have a small living room, I’ve long appreciated the comfort a footstool supplies when relaxing in the evening. Having somewhere to *literally* putting your feet up after a long day is undeniably a fantastic feeling.

But where I’ve opted for a storage footstool (like Next’s Casual Boucle Oyster Natural Ashton Upholstered Storage Stool, £165) to justify the square inches it takes up on my floor, I’m a big fan of B&M’s space-saving alternative. The B&M inflatable footstool, as you would have guessed, inflates and deflates - so you can store it away easily when not in use.

The footstools can be blown up by mouth, or I’d imagine a small pump would do the job. It has a plastic inside and a woven material cover for a stylish finish.

It may only be July, but George Home has just dropped their autumn/ winter collections for 2026, and they’re serving up so many stylish home buys at bargain prices.

George Home is honestly one of my favourite places to shop for the latest home decor trends. It can give Oliver Bonas a run for its money with its bold and colourful homeware, but it is also home to many luxe-looking pieces, including statement vases and gorgeous bedding.

The latest AW26 drops are not short of variety either. There are five collections: Grounded, Supper Club, Snug Season, Luxe Remix and Disco Prairie, and I’ve spotted a few hidden gems with a high-end look hiding amongst them.

Immediately jumping out was the 12 Piece Burgundy Curved Dinner Set (£28), which is a dead ringer for HAY’s iconic Burgundy Barrow Plates. In the interiors world, and magazine world for that matter, Christmas in July is quite normal. As a journalist, I’m used to previewing baubles and tinsel in 30-degree summer heat. But this year, Christmas in July seems to be spilling into a home decor trend, and I’m not sure how I feel about it.

Is July too early to start thinking about Christmas? Is thinking about the festivities now proof of a pro planner, or is it a gimmicky excuse to spend money? The Ideal Home team is split - and we need you to help us decide.

'It's good for bargain hunters'

As someone who works in media, I’m well accustomed to the concept of Christmas in July. It’s the time of year when all the brands hold previews for their A/W and Christmas collections, and while it might seem early to some, I’ve become a fan of the time it gives me to get my Christmas decorating ideas in order and start getting prepped for the festive season.

As someone with expensive taste but a small budget, starting my Christmas prep in July not only means I can spread out the expense of buying new decorations and gifts, but I can also usually buy last season's decorations at bargain prices. The best time to buy Christmas decorations on sale is in January, but there are still deals to be had in July. This year, I’ve spotted bargains at The White Company, with decorations going for under £5, and Balsam Hill is also holding massive sales on its gorgeous faux Christmas trees.

'Can we not just enjoy summer?'

I’ll start by saying that I completely agree that shopping out of season is a great opportunity to snap up sale bargains that are likely to go back up in price for Christmas. I’ve also been known for starting my Christmas present shopping in the summer months because it prevents last-minute panic buying and spreads the cost of Christmas over a few months - which I know my bank balance really appreciates.

But can we stop wishing the summer away? I know it’s been a hot one, but every time I go on TikTok or Instagram, I’m bombarded with nostalgic videos yearning for Christmas and cosy season. I hate the cold, and I’m not one to wish my life away - please, can we stop?

In June, EastEnders had one of its core characters celebrate ‘half Christmas’ complete with a decorated tree and turkey dinner, and it made me feel quite unwell. I’m all for sourcing a bargain, but I’m starting to feel like I can’t escape Christmas in July, and do we really need another excuse to spend money?

If you’ve been looking to make the most of your garden this summer, it can be a little disheartening to see trails of ants making themselves at home on your patio. While there are many ways to get rid of ants, this pest control-approved method is completely natural and organic.

Diatomaceous earth is an effective pest control measure, but it’s really important to buy the correct type. Here’s everything you need to know and how to use it.

What is diatomaceous earth?

It may have a fancy scientific name, but diatomaceous earth is simply the microscopic remains of ancient aquatic sea life.

‘Diatomaceous earth is a naturally occurring powder made from the fossilised remains of tiny aquatic organisms called diatoms. It looks and feels like a fine white dust, but under a microscope, it is razor-sharp. It is one of the few natural pest control products that pest professionals genuinely rate, though most consumers buy the wrong type and wonder why it does not work,’ says Mosh Latifi, Co-Owner, EcoCare Pest Management.

‘This is the detail most guides leave out. There are two main grades: food-grade and filter-grade. Food-grade diatomaceous earth is what you want for pest control. Filter-grade, often sold for pool filtration, has been chemically treated and is far less effective as a deterrent and potentially harmful to inhale. Always buy food-grade and check the label before purchasing.’

How does diatomaceous earth work?

It’s really easy to use diatomaceous earth to get rid of ants from a patio, and it won’t get in the way of your garden ideas.

To use diatomaceous earth, you need to apply a thin layer to entry points, windowsills, doorways and basically anywhere you’ve spotted ants congregating. You’ll want to apply a fine layer, as ants will simply avoid walking over too thick a layer. Remember, diatomaceous earth stops working when wet, so you’ll need to reapply when it rains.

‘The microscopic sharp edges of the particles pierce the waxy outer coating of an ant's exoskeleton as it walks through the powder, causing it to dehydrate and die. It is a purely physical process rather than a chemical one, which means ants cannot build resistance to it the way they eventually do to some chemical products,’ adds Mosh.

‘The main limitation is that it kills individual ants rather than addressing the colony, so it works best as part of a broader approach rather than a standalone solution. For outdoor use or as a preventative barrier inside, it is genuinely worth using.’

The setting I'm most excited about is rice cooking – which is something I absolutely loved when I tested what I think is the best multi-cooker on the market, the Ninja Foodi Possible. If flies and mosquitoes have been plaguing your patio this summer, pest experts have revealed how a mix of coffee grounds and bicarbonate of soda can deter them from your garden, leaving you free to host, relax and enjoy.

It’s always helpful to know how to get rid of flies and mosquitoes. These buzzing pests can be a real nuisance when trying to enjoy your garden, and in the case of mosquitoes, carry a nasty bite, too.

Recently, Ideal Home’s Cleaning Editor Lauren Bradbury used coffee grounds to deter flies from her home, and now pest experts have revealed you can apply a similar principle to your patio. Here’s how.

What's the hack?

Coffee has a strong fragrance that flies and mosquitoes can’t stand, and once lit and smouldering, they won’t go anywhere near it.

‘Flies and mosquitoes locate food and hosts primarily by smell, and strong, unfamiliar odours confuse and deter them. Coffee grounds produce a powerful, bitter aroma that insects find deeply unpleasant and that masks the smells that attract them in the first place, such as food, sweet drinks and carbon dioxide from humans,’ explains Mosh Latifi, Co-Owner, EcoCare Pest Management.

‘Bicarbonate of soda used as part of a mixture can produce carbon dioxide when combined with an acid, which confuses mosquitoes whose tracking systems are tuned to follow CO2 towards a host. Used together, they create a reasonably effective scent barrier around a patio.’

Many pests, including flies and mosquitoes, rely on scent to navigate and communicate, and so scent deterrents are an effective way to keep them at bay. This scent deterrent method is easy to follow, too. Burn dry coffee grounds in a heatproof dish on your patio, and pests will stay away.

‘Sprinkle bicarbonate of soda in and around rubbish bins or in areas where food odours tend to linger,’ suggests Daniel Steward, Managing Director at Shield Pest Control.

‘Before using coffee grounds, ensure they are completely dry. Place them in a heatproof container outdoors and light them so they smoulder rather than burn with a flame. Position the container near seating areas, while keeping it well away from flammable materials.

‘These natural methods work best alongside good patio hygiene. Regularly empty rubbish bins, wipe away food and drink spills promptly, remove fallen fruit, and eliminate standing water from pots, buckets, and other containers to prevent attractive odours and mosquito breeding sites from developing.’

Is this a good hack to use?

While it definitely works, this method is most effective when the coffee is burning. So, unless you’re a full-blown coffee addict and have a steady supply, or have one of the best coffee machines at your fingertips, you might need a more permanent solution.

‘The benefits last only while the bicarbonate of soda continues to absorb odours and the coffee grounds are still smouldering. Once the smoke dissipates or new odours develop, flies and mosquitoes are likely to return,’ confirms Daniel.

However, this doesn’t mean the method is without benefit; it should be used alongside other deterrents.

‘It is a reasonable first line of defence for casual outdoor use and has the advantage of being cheap, natural and widely available. It will not replace a citronella candle or a pheromone trap for serious mosquito pressure, but as a supplementary measure around a patio table, it is worth doing. The burning coffee grounds method in particular is something I genuinely recommend for evening use outdoors when mosquito activity peaks,’ says Mosh.

Shark has just dropped a brand new appliance into its lineup: the Shark BreatheClear with NeverChange6 Air Purifier (£269.99 at Shark). And as someone who tests air purifiers for a living, it’s got me pretty excited.

Personally, I still can't decide if I like the overall modern design or if it’s a bit too robotic for me. But that's all personal preference.

And this will save you a lot of money, as most air purifier filters need to be replaced regularly - costing you an extra chunk of money at least once or twice a year.

To calculate just how affordable that is over six years compared to other air purifiers, you can use the following formula: the price of the air purifier + (the price of the filter × 12). This is based on the assumption that you should generally change your air purifier filter every six months. However, it’s important to note that the exact lifespan depends on your usage.

But if you don’t want to do the maths, I’ve worked out a few examples below that compare the cost of the new Shark BreatheClear Air Purifier with the Blueair 3250i, which is Ideal Home's best overall air purifier, and our top budget model, the COWAY Airmega 50.

So, while it’s fair to say that you’ll have a higher upfront cost with the new Shark air purifier, it works out even cheaper than a budget-friendly model in the long run.

However, it’s important to note that this comparison only compares the air purifier's price and doesn’t account for its features and specifications. It may be that a different model will better suit your specific air quality requirements, so I’d still suggest doing your own research, depending on whether you want an air purifier to stop dust, tackle cooking smells, combat hay fever symptoms, or reduce pet dander.

But if you’re basing your air purifier purchase on price alone, I do think Shark’s new model is a worthy contender and my new unexpected hero of the summer.

Will you be snapping one up?

If there’s one potting ingredient I swear by, it’s an unlikely one: sheep’s wool.

My potted plants have thrived every year since I discovered it for gardening, and it’s all thanks to its water-retaining benefits. Even in peat-free composts, which tend to dry out quicker, I’ve found I can water my plants less than I usually would – and that’s especially handy in hot summers like this one.

There are several ways you can use wool in potted plants, so I’m about to break down the ready-made composts I use and the pellet method I just discovered on Ish Kamran's (@gardening.with.ish) Instagram reel.

What you'll need

When I first stumbled upon Dalefoot Wool Compost for Potting (which you can order from Crocus) back in 2021, it completely changed the way I garden. Initially, I chose the brand because it specialises in peat-free composts (I’m a huge advocate for their environmental benefits), but I was pleasantly surprised by the ingredients: nutrient-rich bracken and comfrey, which feed the plant for up to 12 months and, of course, sheep's wool.

Dalefoot Composts claims that plants require 50% less watering in this compost, and I found that to be pretty true. I’ve actually planted all of my tomatoes in Dalefoot Wool Compost for Tomatoes (also available at Crocus) this year, and they managed to survive the few days I was away while there was a heatwave here in the UK (even if the tomato leaves looked a little yellow and droopy when I first came home!). The plants are still pumping out tomatoes, which is so impressive considering the fact that A) it’s been sweltering, and B) they’re in relatively tiny pots.

You don’t have to buy pre-mixed wool compost, though, thanks to the existence of wool pellets.

It’s common knowledge that wool can deter slugs, since the critters hate anything that wicks water out of them, but I’d never really considered adding it to my potting mixes. Until I saw Ish’s Instagram reel, that is.

‘Add them to a tub of water or some really wet compost, and all of a sudden it makes this fantastic little slurry which is soaking in the moisture really, really well,’ says Ish.

‘I’ve been mixing this in with my multi-purpose compost or peat-free compost, which is not very good at retaining moisture anyway, and as a result, it’s been holding onto that moisture just a little bit longer, meaning that I don’t have to worry about my plants drying out so quickly.’

Besides their moisture-retentive and slug-deterrent properties, wool pellets have a few more benefits – and mulching is one of them.

‘If you place them on top, it actually works as a really good mulch layer, too,' Ish says. 'Any sun rays during a heatwave are reflected off of the soil, meaning the soil dries out slower.'

‘A double bonus is sheep’s wool is naturally full of nitrogen, meaning when this breaks down, it’s also a slow-release food,’ he adds.

I'm sticking with my sheep's wool compost for the foreseeable – but wool pellets are something I want to try as a layer of mulch, or mixed into other wool-free composts I have lying around.

As a mum of two boys, aged 13 and 10, I know just how quickly household items can get destroyed by young, boisterous children.

Items in their bedrooms are no exception, and that's why I'm so pleased I came across this £7.99 Amazon buy. It may not be the most glamorous purchase, but it's protected one of the most expensive purchases we made for the boys' rooms.

Plus, having tested it on the beds in our house, I'm not surprised it has over 11,000 mostly 5-star reviews.

What is it? A humble waterproof mattress protector. And if you haven't yet invested in one for your child's bedroom, let me explain why this purchase could be the best thing you've ever bought for under a tenner.

We all know that the best mattresses don't come cheap, so this isn't an item you want to buy twice, and let me tell you, children’s mattresses really do take a beating!

Although my children only had the occasional bedwetting accident when they were small, there have been occasions over the years when guests came to stay, and an accident occurred, and I struggled to shift the stain afterwards.

More recently, the big problem is food and drink being spilled on the bed and seeping through onto the mattress. We’ve had a bowl of cereal tipped over, a bedtime drink of water sent flying onto the mattress, and even bright pink Calpol splodged everywhere.

Plus, I find one of the worst offenders for staining the mattress is when fake tan and sweat seeps through, leaving a horrible brown stain (and I confess I can’t blame that on the kids!).

Despite following all the top tips on how to clean a mattress, each time I do my best to scrub the liquid or stained patch off, but no amount of scrubbing and drying will completely remove the watermark and discoloured area.

It makes an expensive mattress look unsightly and means it needs replacing more often.

The answer, of course, is adding a good mattress protector to the bed. However, as a child of the 80's, I had vivid memories of scratchy waterproof mattress protectors which crackled more than a packet of crisps if you dared to roll over at night! That was enough to put me off for life.

Fast forward forty years, however, and it turns out waterproof mattress protectors have come on a lot in terms of effectiveness and comfort.

I took a punt, and convinced by the number of positive online reviews, I gave this £7.99 Amazon mattress protector a go.

There are more expensive options available, of course, and I've rounded up some of the best we've tested below, but I wanted to see how this budget buy compared.

Shop alternatives

In contrast to more expensive options, my £7.99 buy may have arrived in very no-frills packaging, but on opening it I was struck by how soft it is – a world away from the scratchy waterproof mattress covers of yesteryear!

The terry towelling top layer felt soft and thick, and it didn’t make a loud crackly noise when I pushed and scrunched it.

Fitting it onto the mattress, I was also impressed by how deep it is; it fitted easily over my thick mattress and even on a mattress with a topper on it.

The elasticated edge also keeps the cover in place well, so it doesn’t wriggle out of place in the night, and both my sons and I can report that there's barely any noise when moving or rolling over.

I put it to the test by pouring some water onto it and was impressed by how it completely prevented the water from seeping through to the mattress below, making it ideal to guard mattresses against spilled drinks or accidents, as well as unsightly fake-tan stains!

Plus, it's washable at 40 degrees and suitable for being tumble-dried at a low temperature.

The only downside I found is that the ‘skirt’ around the sides is quite thin and not much thicker than a pair of tights. I do worry a little that it will get easily snagged or laddered, but with a fitted sheet over the top, we didn't have any issues.

And it seems I'm not alone in being a fan of this budget buy. As one 5-star Amazon review says, 'I have to say I'm so impressed with this product, I immediately purchased another.'

'The toweling side is soft, and the waterproof side makes no annoying crinkling sound,' shares the happy owner. 'The main bonus is the fact you can tumble dry it! Something I've never been able to do with these types of sheets before.'

'I've bought several of these mattress protectors over the years,' says another reviewer. 'They work so well and really are waterproof. They definitely help to preserve your mattress. They wash really nicely and can be tumble dried, which is so convenient. Fantastic value for money.'

Clearly I’m not alone in thinking that this budget buy is a lifesaver when it comes to protecting the most expensive thing in my children’s bedrooms! For our needs, this budget buy does the job perfectly.

If this summer has taught me anything, it’s to never take shade for granted. And with hotter summers expected to become the new normal, it’s a good idea to create areas of shade in your outdoor space to help it stay cooler. If there’s one word that’s being thrown around a lot this year is ‘whimsy’. We can’t get enough of it. Whether we’re trying to add whimsy to our daily routine or adorn our homes with whimsical decor, ‘whimsymaxxing’ is emerging as one of the biggest trends of 2026. But what exactly is it? And how can we apply it to our interiors?

The biggest and longest-lasting home decor trends always have a human focus. Many we’ve seen in the interiors world have been hinged on the idea of ‘nostalgia’ and unsurprisingly, whimsymaxxing is no different.

Lighthearted and playful, the definition of whimsy is: ‘unusual, funny, and pleasant ideas or qualities,’ according to the Cambridge Dictionary. But here’s how interior designers say it translates in the home.

What is Whimsymaxxing?

Adding -maxxing to words to form a verb is a distinctly 2026 trend. It’s basically internet slang for optimising a specific area of your life. I’ve seen health influencers talking about Fibremaxxing, which is essentially focusing on eating enough fibre, and of course Lookmaxxing is the Manosphere ideal that’s been made mainstream and sees men ‘optimising’ their physical appearance.

By this definition, Whimsymaxxing is simply the practice of making your life feel more whimsical. If you’ve been wondering if your home is weird enough, Whimsymaxxing is here to make your interiors feel that little bit more magical and playful.

‘In a world where true creativity can sometimes feel threatened, whimsical interior design means the designer has taken full control of the creative process to build their own unique, imaginative world. To me, 'whimsymaxxing' is simply about filling your home with what you love. It’s a gorgeous, eclectic mix of personal pieces that reflect the true soul of whoever lives there, says interior designer and winner of the BBC’s Interior Design Masters, Lia Gold.

Whimsymaxxing is about choosing things that spark joy in our lives. Whether that’s via your favourite paint colour, fragrance or trinket. It’s a growing trend that’s been gaining further momentum online, too.

‘The rise of 'whimsymaxxing' reflects a growing desire to bring more delight into everyday life. As people move away from perfectly curated interiors, they're embracing nostalgia and playful design in ways that feel much more personal,’ explains Etsy trend expert, Dayna Isom Johnson.

‘We're seeing that shift reflected in what people are searching for on Etsy too, with searches for whimsical jewellery up 84%, beginner needlepoint kits up 175% and polka dot phone cases soaring 835% as shoppers look for little moments of joy in everything from their accessories to their homes. More than anything, it's about giving yourself permission to decorate more freely and choose pieces simply because you love them.’

How to use Whimsymaxxing at home

‘Whimsy isn't a formula or a Pinterest board you can just copy; it’s a feeling you create by surrounding yourself with joyful objects. It’s the silly trinket you found that always makes you smile, or the art print from a tiny shop abroad that you probably didn't need but absolutely wanted. You make a home whimsical by choosing items that evoke a memory or a spark of happiness,’ says Lia.

Given that the definition of whimsymaxxing is a little vague, there’s no clear instruction manual for adding more whimsy to your home. Think about the things that make you happy first.

Then see how you can embrace that in your home. For example, if your favourite colour is sunshine yellow, opting for a bold yellow lamp (such as this Addison Ross Bobbin Lamp) or a sun-shaped rug (£349, Ruggable) is an easy way to put an instant smile on your face.

‘While many people imagine whimsical interiors to be spontaneous, dusty or a little ditsy, today's interpretation is far more considered. It's all about playful intentionality. Carefully layering pieces that evoke joy and nostalgia while still feeling stylish and contemporary,’ says Natalie Evans, founder and CEO of home styling and staging company Little Barn Door.

‘Mixing patterned soft furnishings, pleated lampshades and vintage-inspired accessories with a modern base is the perfect way to embrace the look without it feeling dated. The key is restraint. Rather than turning your home into a complete time capsule, introduce a few carefully chosen statement pieces that capture the essence of the trend without overwhelming the space.

‘Whimsical living isn't about clutter or chaos. It's about creating interiors that feel playful, imaginative and delightfully unexpected, while remaining beautifully curated.

I think there’s something magical about choosing joy wherever we can, and it’s easy to see how whimsymaxxing can contribute to a happier home, too. Start small, and soon your passion for whimsy will grow.

Traditionally, advent calendars are reserved solely for the winter, opened every day of December in the lead-up to the big day – Christmas day. But have you heard of summer advent calendars? That’s right, they’re a thing now as Diptyque’s Summer Essentials calendar lands online and in stores – and I got my hands on this very special and luxurious box of goodies retailing for £235.

Unlike the traditional best advent calendars which come with 24 or 25 little gifts - including the luxury ones like the Diptyque and Jo Malone advent calendars - Diptyque’s summer advent calendar includes only 10 products, three of which are some of the best scented candles - the new, limited-edition 70g Pinede (pine grove) candle, a mini Citronelle (lemongrass) candle to keep the bugs away and a mini Figuier (fig tree) which is one of the brand’s bestsellers and classics, perfect for summer.

Several of the included products are full-sized but still very travel friendly which is what we all need for our summer holidays. The £235 price point does seem rather steep at first glance – but it’s essentially £23.50 per product which is not that bad in my opinion, especially since they’re all Diptyque products which are beautiful, high quality and are known to be on the higher end of the spectrum.

Even though this is the first time I’ve heard of Diptyque’s summer advent calendar, it turns out this is not the first time the brand has done one in recent years. But I must admit they managed to fly under my radar until now.

Each year, the box features a different design which is a work of art in its own right, this year’s included. For this summer collection, Diptyque partnered with mosaic artist Mathilde Jonquière who created a design inspired by the concept of a water garden (jardin des eaux) paved with multicoloured, cut stones arranged into beautiful patterns. It’s Mathilde’s mosaic pattern that covers both the outside and the interior of the summer calendar, which is also fitted with a black leather and brass carry strap and a closing tab.

If you'd told me I'd be considering buying a neck fan two summers ago, I would have laughed you out of the room. However, the humble neck fan is undergoing a renaissance as I've spotted numerous editors I work with sporting them around their necks when working from home.

Alongside the best fans, they have become this summer's new ultimate must-have (just behind the cult John Lewis fan). They offer hands-free cooling when you're out and about, or as my team has discovered, when you're at home, so you don't have to keep moving a desk fan around. The best part is that many of them are also still in stock, unlike many of the best portable ACs and fans we've tested.

For those who haven't seen one in action, a neck fan looks a little like a set of 90s-style headphones draped around your neck. However, instead of the foam ear pads, you have two little fans propelling air at your pulse points to cool you down. Many of them now also have full surround airflow to cool you down quickly.

These little pieces of kit have undergone a stylish reinvention; many of the versions you find on Amazon or other retailers look so sleek I had to do a double-take to work out what my editor was wearing around her neck during a recent meeting. I have tracked down some other versions I'd happily wear in public.

De'Longhi, the Italian coffee machine brand behind so many well-loved machines, have unveiled a more compact and affordable version of one of its bean-to-cup bestsellers – the Rivelia.

The brand new Rivelia Start, which is available now from De'Longhi for £599.99, is a very enticing prospect to me as Ideal Home's Kitchen Appliances Editor. Until today, I thought that its more expensive counterpart was the best bean-to-cup machine for most people after our 5 star review. But somehow, this slimmed-down model looks to have even more going for it and might just knock it off its perch. Not to mention it's available in a gorgeous green colour, which is one of the prettiest kitchen appliance colourways I've seen this summer.

Here's how the new machine compares to its predecessor and why it's the dream machine for small kitchens.

Let's go back to basics and dig into why was the OG Rivelia such a hit. As stated in our expert Home Economist's review back in 2024 it's a coffee machine with a lot going for it. Helen, our revieiwer, described it as 'quite possibly the best designed, nicest looking, and best performing automatic bean-to-cup coffee machine I’ve ever reviewed' – and she's tested plenty for us since 2022.

If you want to enjoy cold drinks, like I did when I tested the phenomenal Eletta Ultra, you'll have to invest in De'Longhi's LatteCrema Cool Tech system separately. This will set you back £99.99 via the brand's website. If you're an iced latte lover, I would say this is well worth it as it provides you with a huge upgrade over just adding cold milk to your coffee. It cold froths milk perfectly so you can enjoy proper iced cappuccinos all day long and serve them up to guests.

There's also a Cold Brew setting, which will be welcome news for those who love the taste of this smooth chilled coffee drink and a treat in the ongoing heatwaves.

Compared to the Rivelia, the Start has a pared-down user interface. Rather than an interactive touchscreen, it has a panel featuring touch-sensitive illustrated buttons of each type of drink available. For most, this probably won't be much of a factor – especially with the benefit of saving £100.

For me, the colours available with the Rivelia Start are a huge draw. Two shades are available so far, the Jade Green and Umber Brown, with more to follow in the full line-up in September.

If you're looking for a do-it-all bean-to-cup machine that will totally wow your guests, the Rivelia Start is a phenomenal value option for this price. Within a few touches of the machine's interface, you can have a café-worthy coffee in front of you every morning. What's not to like?!

Garden experts are urging gardeners to check for these 5 things in their sheds this month, as temperatures become uninhabitable for some common store items.

I know when I’m too hot, I don’t work to the best of my ability, and the same can be said for some of the items in my shed. While the best shed ideas are perfect for maximising storage space, they hardly take into consideration extreme heat.

So, when temperatures reach above 30 degrees, some items are no longer suitable to be stored in the shed and need to be moved somewhere cooler.

1. Paint

When the weather reaches temperatures over 30, you really shouldn’t be storing your paint in a shed, as the high temperatures can affect the quality of your paint.

‘Paint, varnishes and other decorating products are some of the main items that shouldn’t be left in a hot shed because high temperatures can affect the quality and consistency of paint. It will separate, thicken or become difficult to use and even if the tin looks fine from the outside, the contents may no longer perform properly when you use them,’ explains Scott Godfrey, a construction trade consultant with Black Hammer.

‘Wood treatments, stains and some adhesives can also be affected by heat, which means you may not get the finish or strength you expect from them. If you have leftover paint you want to keep, store it somewhere cool, dry and away from direct sunlight.

2. Pesticides and weedkillers

If you use pesticides or weedkillers on your garden(although there are plenty of natural methods to get rid of pests), it’s important to move these products somewhere cooler during a heatwave.

‘Many garden chemicals become unstable or degrade in high heat, which can alter their effectiveness or make them hazardous. Some products also have a lower flash point than people realise. Always check the storage guidance on the label and keep these in a cool, dark environment rather than a shed that bakes in the afternoon sun,’ says Jamie Bloomfield, co-founder and director at Eden Landscapes.

3. Aerosols

Aerosols and extreme heat do not mix, which is why many cans come with warnings to keep them out of direct sunlight. During a heatwave, sheds can become unbearably hot and stuffy, which is a less-than-ideal environment for aerosols.

‘The issue is that sheds can get incredibly hot during periods of really warm weather, which can have a big impact. For some products like paints and adhesives, this can cause thermal and polymer degradation over time, which can affect their overall quality,’ explains Sue Taylor, product expert at Complete Construction Products.

‘That can be really frustrating, and something you don't realise until it's time to use it again. But another thing to consider is safety. Most aerosols have a max tolerance of 50C, which sheds could reach in enclosed spaces, especially if cans are exposed to direct sunlight. If that happens, then internal pressure can build up so much that cans can fail. Today, many cans are designed to tear apart rather than fragment to reduce potential injury, but they can still be a serious hazard.

‘To reduce the risk, move them outside to a well-ventilated and shaded spot, like a covered porch or near a north-facing wall. Keep them out of direct heat and away from anything metal that can add to the surrounding heat.’

4. Fuel and gas canisters

If you have a gas BBQ, I can’t imagine you’ve let it go to waste during all this sunny weather, which means you might have some gas canisters to store, too. But during a heatwave, this can actually be quite dangerous.

‘Gas canisters for barbecues or camping stoves are one of the most dangerous things you can store in a hot shed. High temperatures cause the gas inside to expand and the pressure inside the canister to rise sharply. A shed in direct summer sun can reach 50 to 60 degrees on a hot day, which is well above safe storage temperatures for pressurised gas. These should always be stored upright in a well-ventilated, shaded outdoor area away from any heat source,’ says Jamie.

5. Batteries

Lastly, you should avoid storing batteries - especially lithium iron batteries - in a shed during a heatwave. They can become a fire risk when the mercury soars, making it quite simply unsafe to keep them in a shed. Plus, the heat can affect how they work, too.’

‘Rechargeable batteries and cordless garden tool batteries are another item that shouldn’t be left sitting in a hot shed. Many modern garden tools use lithium-ion batteries, which can be sensitive to high temperatures,’ says Scott.

‘Repeated exposure to heat can reduce their performance and shorten how long they last, and won't hold their charge as well. It’s better to remove batteries from cordless mowers, strimmers and hedge trimmers and store them indoors at a stable temperature. The tools themselves can usually stay in the shed, but the batteries are the part that needs extra protection.

Now, you might want to check your shed for any of these items, and move them to somewhere cooler!

This heat doesn’t seem to be going anywhere, and with cooling appliances flying off the shelves, a big part of my job is tracking down quality fans still in stock. John Lewis’ High Power Handheld Fan with Aluminium Casing (£25) is one of them.

I’m not exaggerating when I say the best fans, desk fans and portable air conditioners are pretty much sold out everywhere. And while we can expect a few air cons to come back into stock this month, they will sell like hot cakes once again.

During hot, sticky heatwaves, it’s important to keep yourself cool, and a handheld fan is an easy way to do this if you still have a busy life to lead, regardless of temperature.

It’s not much of a secret that Ideal Home editors love a John Lewis handheld fan. The £12 viral buy has had all our editors in a chokehold during previous heatwaves, and while that model is currently out of stock (surprise), the John Lewis High Power Handheld Fan reads like it’s a more powerful older sibling - so, perhaps it’s time for an upgrade?

Despite its compact size, John Lewis promises this fan packs a serious cooling punch. It has four speed settings that you can choose from its digital screen, has 15 hours' worth of charge, can be charged via a USB cable and has a handy wrist strap for when you’re on the go.

It also has an aluminium outer shell, which means you can expect it to be durable, handling inevitable knocks and drops. Coinciding with a two-year guarantee, I expect it to be fairly tough.

However, due to the power of this fan, reviews do comment that it can be very noisy.

‘Purchased before travelling on a 14 hour flight - it's certainly powerful enough, to a point it could be as good as my hairdryer!’ one reads.

‘However, it's a little noisy, so I'm not sure if I would get away with using it on its highest setting in public without turning a few heads. The lowest setting however still gives a decent breeze.’

While a noisy fan can be a little irritating, unfortunately, this is a compromise you’ll have to put up with if you want a high-powered hand-held fan. As this fan is something you will hold near your face, it will be noisier.

While noise doesn’t bother some in the quest to stay cool, if you are noise-sensitive, that’s completely valid too, and models such as Amazon's Rechargeable USB Desk Fan (£25.99) and the FAPPEN Mini Handheld Fan (£13.99, Amazon) offer a quieter cooling experience.

Like most fans, I expect the John Lewis High Powered Fan will sell fast. So I’ve rounded up a few more hand-held fans that are still in stock.

With the UK experiencing it's third heatwave of the year before the middle of July, it's no wonder that households are desperate for ways to keep cool.

As a result of the high temperatures, there has been unprecedented demand for portable air conditioners and fans, selling them out left, right and centre. But it's not just portable appliances that are seeing record levels of demand. Fitted air conditioning has also see a huge boost, according to Angus Struthers, Managing Director at BOXT: 'From 1st of May to 30th June, BOXT saw AC sales rise by 249% YoY, with increases in all regions of the UK. This was true as far north as Scotland, which saw a 233% growth YoY, and down in Brighton on the south coast, there was a whopping 1,700% YoY increase in enquiries.'

The Guardian has also reported that the number of air conditioned homes has doubled to four million over the last three years.

And so for those who have invested in a fitted system, headlines about air conditioning being ripped from homes under energy efficiency rules will undoubtedly be worrisome. So is air conditioning really being banned? I asked the experts for the truth behind the rumour.

Is air conditioning going to be banned in the UK?

No air conditioning isn't going to be banned in the UK. In fact, in response to headlines to the contrary, the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government has stated: 'There has been media coverage this week suggesting that air conditioning is banned in homes. This is incorrect.

'Air conditioning can be installed in both existing and new homes.

'In most cases, planning permission is not required to install it for a small home if it would not materially affect the appearance of the building from outside.

'However, there is no blanket rule. People should speak with their local council to check the rules, and councils should take a common-sense approach.'

Where do rumours of an air conditioning ban come from?

As reported by The Telegraph, some homeowners in London have been ordered by their local authority to remove the air conditioning from their homes, in favour of more passive cooling solutions like keeping windows and curtains closed at the hottest part of the day, and opening them when it's cooler to get some cross ventilation going.

In many cases, enforced removal like this will be down to the installations falling foul of planning and building regulation rules, which will not be the same for every area of the UK. Air conditioning rules may also be stricter in highly populated urban areas, like London, as Michael Whittall, Sustainability Manager at Fairview New Homes, explains: 'Air conditioning may make individual homes cooler, but we also have to recognise the wider impact it can have on our cities and communities. Air conditioning systems work by removing heat from inside buildings and releasing it outdoors. When this happens at scale, particularly in dense urban areas, it can contribute to the urban heat island effect - adding to higher outdoor temperatures and increasing heat stress in cities.'

There are also concerns about what a widespread uptake of air conditioning may mean for the National Grid, with researchers from Loughborough University telling the BBC that it won't be able to cope with the additional demand. According to Kian Milroy, Renewables Electrical Engineer at Heatable: 'There is a legitimate concern about millions of inefficient air conditioning units being switched on simultaneously during a heatwave. Modelling by researchers at Loughborough University found that, under its highest domestic uptake scenario, air conditioning could add around 7GW to Britain’s evening peak electricity demand by 2050.'

But Martyn Bridges, Director of External Affairs at Worcester Bosch, argues that this wouldn't be grounds for a ban: 'It is highly unlikely that grid capacity concerns will lead to a ban on domestic air conditioning. Much of the UK’s electricity grid is already being upgraded anyway to accommodate the wider electrification of transport with EVs and heating with heat pumps.

'Furthermore, a typical domestic air-to-air heat pump uses around 1.2 kW/hr of electricity—which is less than a standard washing machine or dishwasher. Given this relatively low consumption and the ongoing infrastructure upgrades, there simply isn't a strong case for a ban.'

Kian also disagrees that a ban is the answer, saying: 'A more credible future is tighter standards rather than a ban. This could include minimum energy-efficiency requirements, restrictions on the least efficient portable units, better installer regulation and incentives for modern systems that provide both heating and cooling.

'Smart tariffs and demand-response technology could also help spread electricity use more intelligently, encouraging households to pre-cool their homes when renewable electricity is abundant rather than adding demand during the evening peak.'

Do you need planning permission to install air conditioning?

Whether or not you need planning permission for fitted air conditioning will depend on where you live, the property you live in, and the type of air conditioning you plan on installing.

In many cases, installing an air-to-air heat pump (which is what fitted air con units are), can be done under Permitted Development as long as it can be used for both heating and cooling, and is fitted and used in a way that doesn't negatively impact your neighbours in terms of things like noise and proximity to their property. It's always best to double check with your local planning authority before you commit to save yourself any hassle. If you don't check and your installation falls foul of the rules, then you may face enforcement action to remove it at your own expense.

Rules will be different if you live in a conservation area, Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty or national park. In these areas, permitted development rights may be restricted or removed altogether, meaning you'll need to apply for planning permission. Similarly, if you live in a listed building, you will need Listed Building Consent to make changes.

Portable air conditioning units will be exempt from planning and building regulation rules, but if they are too noisy or cause issues for your neighbours, the council may intervene if they receive a complaint.

Should homeowners do anything differently?

The best thing you can do if you are planning on installing air conditioning at home, is to check with your local authority that it would be breaching any rules. That way you can rest assured that your investment won't be short lived.

Choosing a reputable installer is also important and they should also be well-versed in the installation requirements under the planning rules.

If you already have air conditioning installed and it turns out you should have sought planning permission, then you could try applying for retrospective planning permission, although there is no guarantee that this will be granted.

If it looks like a fitted system won't be feasible for your home, you could invest in a portable air conditioner when stock is replenished. Until that time, you could also try the tricks to supercharge your fan's cooling power, and opening all your windows when it's cooler outside to help freshen up and cool down your home.
