One of the biggest home decor changes I've witnessed in my 7 years of writing about homes and interiors has been the rise of the at-home workspace. Home offices, once a luxury, are now a necessity for many homes, and desks in a bedroom are no longer only an essential for kids' rooms; they're now a key fixture in most adult bedrooms too.

Even though it’s been a year since I moved into my current flat, I’ve been taking my time decorating it, really thinking about what I want to do with the very small space and what I want to add, tackling one area at a time. My next project is the entryway – or rather the lack thereof. And my first planned purchase to make this happen is a stylish storage stool.

As I was searching through various brands’ offerings, looking for the best small hallway storage idea for my space, I came across a few different storage stool designs that married form and function beautifully. Whether you call it a loveseat, a snuggle chair or a cuddle chair, this cosy-coded seating style sits somewhere between a regular armchair and a small two-seater sofa in terms of size. And whether you’re looking for compact seating for a small living room or a generously-sized addition to an open-plan lounge, these are the best loveseats I’ve tried and would highly recommend to anyone.

As Ideal Home’s Room Decor Editor, it’s part of my job to regularly try sofas, as well as other forms of living room seating ideas in search of the best sofas, best accent chairs etc. So I’ve tried my fair share of loveseats, too.

But while some people might try to sell you on the idea that they snuggly fit two people, I disagree with that. A loveseat is really just a generously sized seating for one person – at a push, you can fit an adult and a small child. Why should you get a loveseat?

‘A loveseat offers all the comfort of a sofa but in a more compact footprint, making it a versatile choice for a range of homes,’ says John O’Leary, design director at Swyft. ‘It's ideal for creating a cosy seating area without overwhelming the room.’

So if you’re looking for small living room seating ideas, then a loveseat or two loveseats positioned opposite one another could be a great choice for your space. ‘In smaller homes or apartments, a loveseat can comfortably replace a traditional sofa without compromising on comfort,’ John says.

However, loveseats are more popular as additional seating in a living room arrangement. ‘We see people using loveseats alongside a larger sofa. They add extra seating while creating a more balanced, conversational layout, which works particularly well in open-plan living spaces or larger family rooms,’ John adds.

Lastly, given their smaller size, loveseats presents the perfect opportunity to create a bit of a statement by opting for either a bolder colour or a fun pattern. ‘It's also a great way to introduce colour or texture into a space, particularly if you're looking to make more of a design statement,’ John suggests.

While you can, of course, opt for a single loveseat in the living room - whether that’s to replace a sofa or an addition to it - there are other ways to utilise a loveseat.

‘One of the most effective arrangements is placing two loveseats opposite each other to create an intimate seating area that’s ideal for conversation, reading or relaxing away from the busier parts of the home. That’s why I put together a list of my top 20 picks celebrating this fresh home decor trend rooted in vintage inspiration and nostalgia. ‘There’s definitely a nostalgic element to the trend – it borrows from glamorous 1920s Art Deco interiors to Victoriana,’ says Lucy Mather, interiors expert at Arighi Bianchi. ‘Practically, a leather sofa is durable and resilient,’ says Shelley Cochrane, accessories buyer at Furniture Village. ‘It also grows even more beautiful with age so you can be confident that your leather sofa will stand the test of time.’

‘I'd recommend a leather sofa for anyone looking to create a more refined, understated living space. They work particularly well in rooms with natural materials like oak, walnut and stone, where the textures complement one another,’ John at Swyft suggests.

What are the downsides of leather sofas?

But nothing is perfect, and leather sofas are no exception. So in order for you to have the full picture, these are some of the downsides of leather sofas to be aware of before buying one.

1. Prone to scratches

One of the beautiful things about leather is the patina it builds over time as it gets worn in. But if you have a pet like a dog or a cat, part of this worn-in look will inevitably be some scratches, too, as the material is prone to those.

‘Whilst leather is wipe-clean, it can be scratched by pet claws,’ Magdalena at Barker and Stonehouse warns.

2. Uncomfortable in extreme weather

Whether it’s the heatwave or the middle of the winter, when the temperatures get extremely cold or hot, a leather sofa reflects this and it might not be the most pleasant seat in the house because of it.

‘Because it's a natural material, it responds more noticeably to changes in temperature, feeling cooler in winter and warmer in summer,’ John at Swyft says.

3. Requires maintenance

Even though leather sofas are durable and hardwearing, they require some maintenance in order to keep the material feeling supple and soft.

‘As a natural material, leather will age and soften with use, and without regular care it can become dry or lose some of its rich colour,' says Julia Bilotta, creative stylist at Sofology. 'To help preserve the leather’s softness, appearance and natural sheen, we recommend using a specialist leather conditioner as part of a quality care routine. Applying conditioner twice a year will help to nourish the material, prevent it from drying out and keep your sofa looking beautiful for years to come.’

4. Higher price point

Just like any products made out of genuine leather outside of sofas tend to be pricier, the same goes for leather sofas. And while I tried to find some affordably priced leather sofas, most of them are not exactly budget-friendly.

But it is a long-term investment as leather sofas should and usually do last for many years.

Every interiors editor I know goes to this brand for expensive-looking garden furniture, and they're having a massive clearance sale right now

When it comes to refreshing my garden for summer, there is one online brand I always turn to for unique and expensive-looking garden furniture: La Redoute. The online store is essentially France's answer to M&S, selling everything from fashion to homeware, but it's the garden furniture that impresses me, and other interiors editors, time and time again.

La Redoute sits in the mid to high price range on the high street, but it delivers designer looks at a fraction of the price of designer brands such as Soho Home. However, if you want to get the designer look for even less, La Redoute is hosting a massive final garden clearance sale with prices reduced by up to 60% on some of their most lust-worthy pieces.

The outdoor coffee tables and sculptural side tables are where La Redoute really shines. I've got my eye on the Dendi Ceramic Garden Side Table in a gorgeous ochre colour as an easy way to add the tile trend to my garden. If you're looking to upgrade your BBQ setup, I've also spotted the Wassif Acacia Garden Table, which I picked up last summer to turn into a mini outdoor kitchen, reduced to under £200.

Corner sofas are also great because they utilise the space that often goes underutilised – the corner. And since a corner sofa slots into corners so well, it also makes for a great small living room sofa idea.

‘People often assume corner sofas are only suited to large living rooms, but they can work just as well in more compact spaces. Positioned correctly, they can actually make a room feel more efficient by using corners that might otherwise be underutilised,’ John at Swyft says.

How to choose a corner sofa

Aside from the general things to consider when choosing any type of sofa that you want to last - as a sofa should last for years to come - with corner sofas, one of the biggest things to consider is the scale.

As already mentioned, corner sofas are bigger than most but there are such things as ‘small corner sofas’, too. So just make sure you choose a style that fits your living space and doesn’t overwhelm it.

‘The best style of corner sofa depends on the layout of the room, the flow of the space and the position of key focal points such as a TV, fireplace or windows. In smaller rooms, a classic L-shaped design tucked into a corner can maximise floor space, while larger living areas may benefit from a sweeping curved sofa that creates a striking centrepiece,’ Julia at Sofology advises.

She adds, ‘In smaller living rooms, choosing a corner sofa with a lower back can help create a sense of openness, making the room feel larger while still providing plenty of space to stretch out.’

Is there anything better than a sale? I'm a self-confessed bargain hunter, but unfortunately, one that still has high standards with what I like to invest in for myself at home, which is why I was giddy to see that Dunelm's Summer Sale has started. And it's bigger than you'd believe.

While pouring through the pages of kitchenware in the Dunelm sale, I noticed that there were some seriously good finds hidden in there. I've been a fan of The Edited Life collection from Dunelm for a while now and while it's already well priced, the aesthetically pleasing range is even more affordable.

Some of my favourite brands are in there too, from Joseph Joseph's thoughtfully engineered kitchen gadgets to Kilner jars, which already feature on every shelf in my kitchen. I try not to jump onto trends too quickly, but when a trend is genuinely beneficial for your health, what's not to love? You know that feeling that you get when you spot something in the shops that you can't help but fall for? Then you check the price and realise it's a bargain? THAT. That's what this page is all about.

Now, while it's always better to have discovered a brilliant bargain yourself, most of us don't have the luxury of time on our hands to scour the shops. So getting a little steer each month to a curated selection of homeware and accessories that is bound to sell out quickly is a no-brainer.

While putting together Ideal Home magazine each month, I spend my days browsing through the very latest collections and can confidently say that when it comes to homeware, I know where to find a bargain. I also have a £20 Under £20 feature in the magazine, too, but I tend to mix it up a little here to include a few extra bits and bobs that have tickled my fancy.

This time around, I've chosen a summery blue and white theme, with pops of red and coral for good measure. There are fish motifs aplenty and the odd bit of wicker in there, too. If there’s one thing I’ll happily admit, it’s that I have expensive taste when it comes to outdoor furniture – just not always the wallet to match. So I’ve been doing what I do best and trawling the seasonal sales at the likes of Habitat, Dunelm and Swyft to find the garden pieces that look far pricier than they actually are.

What I've really been taken by are these clever, design-led pieces that will instantly elevate an outdoor space. While the past few months haven't supplied much sunny weather, it has given us lots of time to ponder over our garden plans - from outdoor kitchen ideas to new garden furniture, we're even more excited by the premise of a warm weekend than ever before. I believe there's one underrated and often overlooked finishing touch, however, that needs more attention.

Even when the sun is shining, you need to think about how your alfresco dining and cooking space will transform from day to night. Garden lighting is essential to ensuring you can entertain well into the night, and it helps to create ambience when hosting friends and family.

Many of us don’t have a lot of outdoor space to work with, whether that’s a small garden or even just a balcony. That means that every piece of furniture that you include in that space needs to work a lot harder than if it were a garden that’s on the larger side. That’s why I’ve searched high and low in order to find the best space-saving outdoor furniture to make shopping for your small outdoor space easier.

As Ideal Home’s Room Decor Editor, I see and test out a lot of furniture, both for indoors and outdoors, and I have very high standards for each of the categories. Those standards are even higher when it comes to small spaces, as those pieces of furniture need to be clever, practical, yet stylish in order to be considered the best garden furniture for compact spaces and earn their spot in your small garden ideas.

But the 12 pieces of outdoor furniture below have truly impressed me. Summer is just around the corner so it’s no surprise that prepping our outdoor spaces for warmer temperatures is currently a top priority. And one of the outdoor furniture categories that’s already selling out are sun loungers. So if you, too, are thinking of adding one to your garden or patio, I’ve found the 12 best sun loungers to invest in.

I’ve already included a handful of sun loungers in some of my previous articles and they have been some of the most clicked-on pieces. Perhaps it’s the luxurious feel that sun loungers convey, being associated with hotel swimming pools and exclusive members clubs such as Soho House, that are currently making them the best garden furniture buy for many.

‘With forecasts pointing towards a particularly hot summer, sun loungers are expected to be one of the season’s most popular garden investments,’ says Matt Baldock, senior buyer and outdoor expert at Garden Trading, a brand of garden furniture which also sells sun loungers.

Even if you don’t have a pool, a sun lounger is a great garden seating idea and the perfect spot to relax in once summer comes around. How to choose the best sun loungers

‘When choosing a sun lounger, it’s important to think beyond appearance and focus on durability, comfort, and how the piece will perform over time,’ Matt at Garden Trading advises.

These are some of the things to look out for when shopping for sun loungers that will help you make sure that all the crucial criteria are ticked off.

Material

Just like with any garden furniture, it’s important to make sure that the material of your sun lounger is durable and of good quality. Some of the recommended materials to look out for are either teak or acacia wood - teak is more durable but acacia wood is more common and more affordable - synthetic rattan also known as poly rattan and powder-coated aluminium or steel.

‘Because sun loungers are designed to support weight for extended periods, opting for high-quality, hard-wearing materials is essential. I would typically recommend either a solid wood design, or a premium poly-rattan model with a sturdy aluminium frame. Both options offer excellent longevity, withstand regular use, and cope with changing weather conditions well, helping to maintain their appearance for years with the right care,’ Matt at Garden Trading explains.

‘A good sun lounger will offer a stable base on which to lie and offer comfort through supportive and showerproof cushions,’ says Danielle Le Vaillant, head of photography and film at Cox & Cox.

A good sun lounger needs to feel sturdy and stable as it needs to support your weight when you’re lounging on it and it shouldn’t wobble or rattle whenever you lie down or get up.

But perhaps most importantly, the sun lounger you choose needs to feel comfortable, otherwise you’re not going to feel inclined to spend much time sitting and lounging on it. A good level of comfort is often achieved through the cushion pad that the sun lounger comes with which needs to be just so enough to feel comfy while also offering enough support.

I would argue that the best sun loungers come with an adjustable reclining feature so that you can change positions depending on whether you want to just lie down and relax or be a bit more upright and read a book perhaps.

As Ideal Home's Sleep Editor, I spend my days stalking new bedding collections, and in recent years, M&S has become one of my top recommendations for where to buy bedding.

Gone are the days when the brand offered great quality bedding that was a little... boring. In recent years, the brand's homeware has undergone something of a style revolution, with the homeware retailer now leading the way in translating the hottest design trends into affordable buys that work in real homes.

Spring is when all the new-season bedding collections launch, and this year, there's one clear trend that's steadily gaining momentum.

Last year may have been the year of the stripe, but 2026 is the year of the 'woodblock floral'. Inspired by traditional printing processes in which a wooden block is carved, inked, and hand-printed on fabric, this new take on the spring floral brings an artisanal, handcrafted look to our beds.

However, there's a twist. Because instead of ditching last year's stripes, the woodblock floral trend embraces them. This look sees florals and stripes combined, whether that's via a handprinted woodblock quilt over a striped duvet cover, a reversible bedding set with a block print on one side and stripes on the other, or a floral duvet cover with a striped fitted sheet hiding below.

Even though the weather is only just starting to warm up and the sun is only just starting to rear its head in the UK, H&M Home has me summer-ready with its new Riviera collection. Launched just this week, the H&M Home summer 2026 collection is all about beachy vibes inspired by the lifestyle and aesthetic of the Italian coast.

I’m a big fan of H&M’s homeware – I regularly obsess over the super stylish and expensive-looking H&M Home lamps, and I just bought this wooden H&M wall shelf defined by its clean lines to display my mugs and glassware. But it’s this newly released Mediterranean-themed collection that’s sure to become my new obsession.

Adding a parasol to your garden or patio is both practical and, if you choose right, it can make your outdoor space a lot more stylish. But there are so many parasols available to choose from that it can be an overwhelming task – but I’ve spent hours searching for the best parasols in the most popular categories and have found 20 that I feel comfortable recommending to you.

Parasols are a garden shade idea that continues growing in popularity as John Lewis reports that searches for parasols have increased by 250% compared to the same time last year. And there are a lot more stylish parasols to choose from this year compared to previous years, which includes the most on-trend styles like striped parasols, retro-inspired ones, as well as parasols with fringed trims.

‘Fringe is the biggest parasol trend I’m seeing this year,’ says Chloe Barrow, interior expert at homeware and outdoor furniture brand Laura James, which also makes garden parasols. ‘A beautiful nod to the 70s, fringe has started appearing on parasols at luxury hotels and beach clubs that are creating a vintage or retro-inspired feel.’

How to choose the best parasol for your garden

Similarly to buying the best garden furniture for your space, when shopping around for a new parasol, there are a few things to look out for, too.

Material

Given the unpredictable British weather, make sure that the structure of your garden parasol is sturdy enough to withstand the elements. For this reason, I’d avoid parasols with flimsy, plastic poles even though those tend to be more budget-friendly.

‘You need to ensure the pole is solid enough to not simply blow over in the windy British weather. I recommend going for parasols with a wood or steel pole, as opposed to plastic,’ Chloe at Laura James advises.

Similarly, the fabric the parasol is made with should ideally be water repellant and thick enough to offer substantial UV protection. If the material’s too thin, the sunrays might just go right through it. ‘It’s important that a shade offers a good level of UV protection and is in a fabric that offers some water resistance, with strong aluminium ribs and central pole that will hold up on a breezy day,’ explains Danielle Le Vaillant, head of photography and film at Cox & Cox.

Style

There are several different styles of parasols available and different ones will work for different outdoor spaces. From an aesthetic perspective, you might want to consider whether you’re after a simpler, neutral design or something bolder and decorative like a striped parasol or a fringed one.

‘Pretty retro-style parasols are continuing in popularity this season,’ Danielle at Cox & Cox says. ‘The two-tone green fringed Retro parasol has a statement onion top and dainty fringed edge for a hint of fun poolside with your lounger or simply paired with a daybed or deckchair on the lawn.’

But aside from aesthetics, the style you choose is also about considering practicality. Think about everything from the opening system - the wind-up system with a crank is considered the easiest to manoeuvre which is why I’ve included the four best wind-up parasols above - to whether you need a tilting parasol for added flexibility.

‘A parasol which can be tilted and adjusted is ideal for more permanent seating and dining areas to provide protection throughout the day without having to reposition everything,’ Danielle explains.

Chloe at Laura James adds, ‘Check if the parasol has the kind of opening mechanism you’re looking for. A crank mechanism is the easiest, in my opinion, but there are also manual push-up parasols which can be more affordable, alongside those with a pulley and pin system.’

Size

Lastly, make sure that the parasol you’re buying is the right size for your garden. As with any garden furniture ideas, you don’t want anything that’s either too small or too big. So always measure first and buy second. If your outdoor space is very small, you might want to consider a half parasol.

‘If the parasol is to provide shade for alfresco dining, look for designs that are large enough to cast shade over both the table and the chairs around it with ease,’ Danielle at Cox & Cox concludes.

If there's one thing I am absolutely obsessed with purchasing, it's a kitchen tray. Once your kitchen is at capacity with kitchenware, there's little else to upgrade to make your space feel brand new, so a tray is the perfect dopamine hit that has a practical function, too.

I’m a furniture editor that’s hard to impress, but these garden coffee tables have done it – they’re a must-have in any outdoor living room

It’s my job to look at as much outdoor furniture as possible so that you don’t have to - not to mention that I’m an extremely fussy and hard-to-impress furniture editor - which is why my editor asked me for a shortlist of the best outdoor coffee tables that she could add to her garden. There are some great styles and designs around at the moment if you know where to look, so instead of gatekeeping, I'm sharing my top picks.

The boundary between our indoor and outdoor spaces is becoming increasingly blurred with every passing year. Most gardens these days feature an outdoor living room, which should be just as comfortable as the indoor version, in my opinion. That, of course, starts with the best outdoor sofa. But the right garden coffee table is another must-have.

Just like with any indoor furniture, the best garden furniture needs to be either very stylish or clever (ideally both).
