<dc:description>
Heather Young has been Ideal Home’s Editor since late 2020, and Editor-In-Chief since 2023. She is an interiors journalist and editor who’s been working for some of the UK’s leading interiors magazines for over 20 years, both in-house and as a freelancer.

Heather’s interest in magazine journalism started at school, after a work experience placement at Empire film magazine. In her final year at York University where she was studying English Literature and History of Art, Heather attended a careers talk given by the then deputy editor of Country Living magazine and that was her lightbulb moment. She could combine working in magazines with her passion for interiors – something she’d loved even as a child (redecorating her bedroom was the present she requested for her 12th birthday!).

Heather first joined the Ideal Home team in 2007, where she oversaw the magazine’s real homes and makeovers features.

After going freelance following the birth of her twins, Heather continued to write for Ideal Home, as well as other leading homes titles. Heather was also an early adopter when it came to blogging and social media, launching her own award-winning interiors blog in 2011.

With experience art-directing a large number of shoots, both still photography and video content, Heather has also appeared in front of the camera, creating and presenting craft and DIY videos both for her own channels and for clients.

Heather rejoined the Ideal Home family four years ago and became Editor of Ideal Home and Style at Home at the end of 2020.

Heather and her family moved into their Victorian home in Surrey – a former hospital porter’s lodge – just before lockdown 2 at the end of 2021. It’s got great bones, but Heather’s keen to put her stamp on it. A keen DIYer, Heather has had to accept that progress is slower than she’d like, as she juggles the redecoration and renovation with work and busy family life. Heather recently completed a kitchen renovation, knocking through to the garage and removing a chimney breast to put in a huge wall of floor-to-ceiling sliding doors.

Ideal Home Truths

We've just completed a kitchen extension project, so the renovation budget is running a little low right now! We didn't plan to tackle the garden this year, but after installing huge sliding doors in the kitchen to enjoy the view outside, we've decided we've got to give the mud pit left behind after the building work a good facelift this summer.
</dc:description>

                                                                <dc:description>

</dc:description>

She's spent the last four years researching and writing about what makes for the best night’s sleep during the day and testing out sleep products to find the best-in-class by night. So far she’s clocked up over 10,000 hours of pillow, duvet, and mattress testing experience.

Our go-to for all things sleep-related, she’s slept on and under bestselling products from Simba, Emma, Hypnos, Tempur, Silentnight, Panda, and many many more. As a hot sleeper, Amy is always on the lookout for the most breathable bedding, but she also leads a wider team of testers to ensure our product testing encompasses both hot sleepers, cold sleepers, front sleepers, back sleepers, side sleepers, and everything in-between.

In her mission to unlock the secrets to a good night's sleep, Amy regularly attends product launches, speaks to industry insiders, spends time climbing on and off mattresses in showrooms across the country, and travels to visit factories and testing facilities – most recently the IKEA testing facility in Älmhult Sweden where the brand’s mattresses are put through vigorous testing processes.

Amy also lends her expertise to our furniture guides, sharing her design knowledge with our readers to help them choose the right sofa for their interior or the best garden furniture for their outside space.

Before she joined Ideal Home, Amy worked on branding and marketing at various interior and homeware brands, before joining the editorial teams at Livingetc, Homes & Gardens, Real Homes and Gardeningetc.

IDEAL HOME TRUTHS

Where’s your happy place?
I stare at a screen a lot of the day at work, so somewhere immersed in nature and away from technology is my happy place; generally by water, woodland, or up a hill. I also love trying to bring the soothing effects of nature into my home with lots of plants, natural materials, textures, and nature-inspired colour schemes.

What’s your home addiction?
I definitely have a cushion addiction, to the extent I had to specifically look for a sofa that was deep enough to allow me to pile them up high! On the plus side they’re a super easy and affordable way to switch up your decor and refresh a bed or seating, and, obviously, really comfortable! On the downside I now have two blanket boxes filled with ‘spares’… That and houseplants, they seem to multiply fairly regularly too…

What’s your next home project?
Inspired by my favourite outdoor landscapes I’m planning on painting my desk green to make me feel like I’m outdoors even when I’m not.

</dc:description>

Perhaps an affordable mattress under £500 is more realistic? Or maybe you like the support of your current bed, but need a little bit more cushion? In which case, our guide to the best mattress toppers is a must-read.

You can also improve the thermal performance of your current mattress with the best cooling mattress toppers – a great buy if you are constantly awoken by overheating. Keep it fresh with our mattress cleaning guide.

If you prefer to browse for a new mattress for yourself, you can see all of our mattress reviews, along with our tester ratings. She fell into the world of homes and interiors after joining the Ideal Home website team in 2019 as a Digital Writer. In 2020 she moved into position of Homes News Editor working across Homes & Gardens, LivingEtc, Real Homes, Gardeningetc and Ideal Home covering everything from the latest viral cleaning hack to the next big interior trend. She lives at the top of a hill in the countryside, so the living room has huge windows looking out over the rolling fields below.

What’s your home addiction?

I'm obsessed with vintage crockery, I'm a magpie for scouring charity shop bric-a-brac shelves. My best finds to date are a set of pastel blue Wedgewood candle stick holders and a set of six cut glass wine tumblers I picked up at a second-hand store in the Lake District.

What is your next home project?

I just moved into my first unfurnished rental flat so we're busy kitting it out. We're mostly trying to stick to using second-hand items we're bought cheaply or picked up for free. We inherited some wooden farmhouse chairs from a family friend that need a little upcycling love so they're my next big project.
</dc:description>

She has been writing about homes since 2013 when she joined the Homebuilding & Renovating team as Junior Web Editor. Here she got to put a lifelong passion for architecture and design to good use, overseeing web content for the brand and helping people find information and inspiration for their own builds.

In 2015 she took on a senior web editor role heading up the web team for Real Homes and Period Living websites, too. When Future Plc acquired the brands in 2017, she was made Associate Editor of Realhomes.com helping move the brand forward globally as the place to find accessible home makeover advice. Lindsey was also put in charge of increasing the brand’s presence as a product advisory, and built her skills around crafting review and buying guide content. In late 2020 her team was asked to bring this insight to the other Future Home brands and produce articles on where to buy the best products for the likes of Homes & Gardens, Livingetc, Gardeningetc and, of course, Ideal Home. She sat on the judging panel of the Real Homes Product Awards 2021.

When she isn't writing about homes, she is working on the ongoing renovation of her Victorian terrace in the Staffordshire countryside. She has converted the loft, remodelled the bathroom and is currently undertaking a kitchen makeover, as well as constantly trying to make something of her long narrow cottage garden.

Ideal Home Truths

Where’s your happy place?

Aside from anywhere that I can sit outside with a drink breathing fresh country/sea air, it really does have to be my home. I have lived here for eight years and it has been a labour of love, bringing it into the 21st century and imparting my style, while always paying homage to its early Victorian bones. I am outgrowing it and need a much bigger kitchen, but will be very sad to part ways.

What’s your home addiction?

Good quality bedding and textiles. I have played it fairly safe with my decor – most rooms are a base of white with perhaps a green wall here and there – so accessorising with soft furnishings is my go-to. I am obsessed with Bedfolk linen bedding for its relaxed look and all round liveability. I also love a bit of storage. Every drawer and cupboard have some kind of divider, basket or system.

What is your next home project?

I am about to have a new kitchen fitted. Once the pros have done their thing, I am looking forward to giving the black pub beams a coat of white chalk paint, freshening up the walls and dressing the glass fronted cupboard with my favourite colourful crockery.
</dc:description>

Conservatory ideas have to work a little harder than in other rooms in the house. These light-filled spaces are designed to be a gateway to the outside, a spot where you can sit and enjoy the early morning sun when it's too cold to go out.

However, if your house is on the small side, they often need to be more than just a garden room. They need to double up as living rooms, play spaces or dining areas, and in this case, it's crucial to plan the conservatory blind ideas and flooring ideas carefully. Get them wrong, and you could end up with a space that is either too hot or too cold to use, depending on the time of year. But get it right, and you'll be blessed with a gorgeous room that adds more usable space to your home.

We inherited some wooden farmhouse chairs from a family friend that need a little upcycling love so they're my next big project.
</dc:description>

The best garden ideas are those that think beyond the summer months, and make your outdoor space somewhere that can be used all year round. A garden is valuable space and should be treated like an extra room in your home when it comes to plotting garden decor ideas. Whether you are creating a decked area or patio for alfresco dining or brainstorming spectacular front garden ideas, to make your home the envy of the street we have plenty of inspiration.

The key is to achieve a balance between the size of your garden and what you would like to use the space for. A compact balcony would benefit from a small, brightly coloured bistro set and some potted plants, while a larger garden may allow for several zones to be created to accommodate your needs.

Gardens can easily become neglected as people don’t know how to tackle them. Northfacing and narrow gardens are some of the most challenging to master. However, knowing how to plan a garden like an expert and investing in some clever planting techniques can transform a difficult spot into a sanctuary for the whole family to enjoy.

If they’re amusing too - all the better.

What’s your next home project? I’m constantly adding to my list of home improvements, but the top priorities are to decorate my bathroom (I’m keen on Valspar’s Emperor Butterfly for the walls) and change the awful black and grey flecked carpet on my stairs and landing (which I have been saying I’ll do for years, but this year I’ll definitely get round to it). Longer term, I am also really keen to replace the roof on my conservatory to make the space more usable year round.
</dc:description>
