Nothing ruins a room's look quite like a clothes airer covered in washing. And having tested and used more clothes airers than I care to remember, there's one design that still stands out for all the right reasons.

The Joseph Joseph Eclipse clothes airer might not be new, but I haven't come across another that makes drying laundry look quite so stylish.

Unlike traditional clothes horses and even the best heated clothes airers, which leave your washing on full display, the Eclipse cleverly conceals it behind a neutral fabric screen. It's a super simple but ingenious solution to the household eyesore that is drying washing indoors, especially in the colder months.

The clever thing about the Joseph Joseph Eclipse is that it looks more like a snazzy room divider than a clothes airer. The neutral fabric screen hides all the washing hanging behind it, meaning you don't have to spend your evenings staring at socks, towels and underwear drying in the corner of your living room.

Behind the screen are three tiers of drying space, offering 14 metres of hanging room in total. The shelves can be folded down individually to accommodate longer items, and it has wheels that make it easy to move about.

It's also really easy to put together, which is a bonus. My only slight gripe is that the fabric screen needs a good iron to get rid of the creases before it looks its best.

I realise complaining about having to iron something designed to make laundry look more attractive is a little ironic (I didn't do it, by the way, but I will steam it now that it's put together!), but it's worth bearing in mind if you're hoping to have it looking picture-perfect.

At £135, it's not exactly a budget buy, especially since it doesn't have a heating element to help speed up drying times, but what you're paying for is the design and ability to disguise something that's usually a sight to behold.

The Joseph Joseph Eclipse isn't going to make the whole process of drying copious amounts of washing any faster, but it does make the whole process a lot easier on the eye.

And when I'm drying laundry all day, every day in winter, there's a lot to be said for an airer that doesn't take over the look of your living space. It might be a tad on the pricier side, but I haven't found a nicer airer that combines practicality with style better!

Let's face it - we all want our kitchens to look much more expensive than what we've actually spent. Whether you're in a rental that needs some polishing or your kitchen reno budget hasn't gone as far as you hoped, there's no need to worry – lighting can be your saviour.

Kitchen lighting ideas are a seemingly small feature, but they're one of the most important. Lighting has the ability to completely alter the ambience of a room, and choosing the right lighting can turn a stark, uninviting space into one filled with warmth.

The same can be said for making a kitchen look expensive. The wrong lighting will cheapen a scheme, whereas subtle, hidden lighting techniques will ooze luxury from every corner.

'Successful kitchen lighting is about creating the right ambience for different moments throughout the day, from practical lighting when preparing meals to a softer, more relaxed setting in the evenings,' says Tom Raffield, founder of Tom Raffield.

A single overhead light might be a useful source of light, but it's not going to help to transition your kitchen from day to night, or from cooking to hosting.

Layered lighting is the key to achieving a scheme that has versatility and easily transitions to meet your needs, rather than causing frustration.

'A considered approach can transform how a kitchen looks and feels, with subtle details like under-cabinet lighting adding warmth and depth,' Tom continues.

While the 3-layer lighting rule is great guidance for creating a dynamic lighting set-up, it doesn't speak to the power of hidden lighting enough.

Adding lamps to a kitchen acts as a source of warmth and adds decor, but sometimes we want all of the perks of illumination without adding more clutter to our kitchens. This is where opting for clever, hidden sources of light comes into play.

For a more seamless finish, integrated lighting can make a real difference. From subtle lighting beneath worktops and along horizontal and vertical recess rails to illumination beneath wall units, shelving and inside drawers, these thoughtful details can shine a light on your kitchen and help create the perfect ambience, while making everyday tasks a little easier,' explains Ntola Obazee, brand director, Kutchenhaus.

Adding thin LED strips underneath shelving, whether open shelving or within cupboards, is one of the easiest ways to add an instant premium touch to a kitchen. It makes built-in cabinetry look much more luxe but also aids visibility.

Hidden lighting along the bottom of cabinetry also adds light to walkways and creates atmosphere - particularly upon evenings spent hosting. Choose where you position this carefully - it will have a high impact when used sparingly around an island to accentuate the centre of the kitchen.

I don't know about you, but as the weather begins to cool and the nights draw in, my mind is turning to cosying up my home.

Cold temperatures and dark and gloomy winter days mean more time inside, and that means interiors need to work harder to cheer us up and create a sense of snug warmth we can retreat to.

Nowhere is this more important than in our bedroom design ideas. As such, I've asked the experts how to give a bedroom a winter glow-up. These are the five non-negotiables interior designers recommend to cosy up your sleep space.

And thankfully, as interior designer Katerina Tchevytchalova, founder of interior design studio K'Arte Design, points out, this doesn't mean a complete bedroom overhaul or a big budget.

Instead, these are simple and affordable tweaks that have a big impact and can instantly make your bedroom feel warmer, cosier, and more cocooning.

1. Layer, layer, layer

'You don't need to redecorate to make a bedroom feel cosy for autumn,' says interior designer Katerina, 'it's really about layering and warming up what's already there.'

'Start with textiles,' Katerina says. 'Swap in a heavier throw and a few extra cushions in warmer, richer tones like terracotta, olive or deep clay.'

'Since it's the natural focal point of the room, start with the bed itself,' agrees interior designer Lara Clarke, founder of Lara Clarke Interiors. 'Swapping in a heavier-weight duvet, a knitted throw and a mix of cushion textures instantly makes the space feel more inviting, and it's the easiest seasonal update to change back come spring.'

2. Consider what's underfoot

When it comes to layering textiles, don't forget to think about what's underfoot as well as on top of the bed.

'If you have hard flooring, a wool rug underfoot makes an enormous difference to how the room feels the moment you get out of bed,' says Katerina.

'Underfoot, a soft, textured rug does a huge amount of work,' agrees Lara. 'A rug warms the room both visually and physically first thing in the morning and adds a layer of depth that a plain floor simply can't. If you have the budget for one seasonal buy, this is where I'd put it.'

3. Swap out your bedding

When it comes to the textiles you use in your bedroom this winter, our interior experts also recommend thinking texture, texture, texture.

'In winter, I always recommend a linen or brushed cotton bedding change,' says Katerina. The best brushed cotton bedding is a particularly cosy choice as its fluffy fibres mean none of the chill you can get from smooth cotton bed sheets during the colder months.

Alternatively, the best linen bedding has a slubbier texture than cotton that achieves a similar effect, just with a little less snuggle-factor.

4. Create a cosy glow

'Lighting is the other easy win,' says Katerina. 'Overhead lighting can feel quite clinical, so bring in a couple of table lamps or a floor lamp instead, and if your bulbs allow it, opt for a warmer colour temperature. It instantly makes the space feel softer and more restful in the evenings.'

'Swap out any harsh overhead light for a mix of table lamps and wall lights on a warmer bulb temperature,' agrees Lara. 'It changes the whole mood of a room in minutes and makes it feel more like a retreat than a functional space to sleep in.'

5. Don't forget the windows

'If your bedroom allows it, a heavier curtain fabric or an additional layer like a sheer behind a main curtain helps stop windows from feeling like a cold void once it gets dark earlier,' says Lara. 'This makes the whole room feel more cocooning.'

In fact, many design experts recommend 'window-stacking' during the colder months, which means layering up your window dressings as Lara suggests.

You might use a thermal blind next to the glass, a sheer fabric like Lara suggests to soften the window during the day, and then a thicker curtain to keep things warm and cosy during the night.

And as a bonus tip when it comes to creating a cosier bedroom, 'don't underestimate scent,' says Katerina. 'A candle or diffuser in a warm, woody fragrance signals the season has changed just as much as anything visual does.'

Ultimately, as Katerina sums up, 'these are all small, affordable tweaks, but layered together they completely transform how a room feels to be in.'

And as the temperatures outside my bedroom window continue to plummet, I think these simple tricks to cosy-maxxing a sleep space are exactly what's needed.

There is no better investment for cosy season than a cast iron casserole pot. While Le Creuset used to be the only go-to cast iron pan on the market, in the last few years there has been an explosion in the availability of high-quality and affordable cast iron lookalikes. Now IKEA has just entered the group chat with the VARDAGEN cast iron casserole dishes.

When choosing cookware, every kitchen should have a cast iron pan. They can go from hob to oven to table for cooking up soups and stews. They're also ideal for baking bread at home for that perfect crisp crust. However, while Le Creuset's Signature Round Casserole in Meringue will cost you £299 at John Lewis, you can pick up IKEA's VARDAGEN Casserole with lid for £39 for a 4L size.

I use my own Le Creuset casserole pot several times a week in the cold weather season. Whether for baking bread or cooking a one-pot wonder. It works with all hob types. I use mine from the hob to the oven and then take it straight to the table for serving. The amount I use it means it's more than paid for itself. However, if your budget is tighter, the IKEA one is a brilliant price point and comes with a whopping 15-year guarantee. So you'll be using it way into Christmas 2041.

IKEA's cast iron pan promises even cooking, whether on the hob or in the oven. Plus, it's a game-changer for one-pot cooking, since it means less washing up afterwards. Its lid is specially designed to collect steam, which drips back into your food to baste it and add even more flavour.

While I'm yet to use this pan myself, I will say that due to its heavy construction and convenient design with two handles and a stainless steel knob, it shouldn't be hugely different from the OG from Le Creuset. And I know: lots of brands have bought out dupes for the Dutch Oven, but this one is particularly unique because it's wrapped in a 15-year guarantee.

Do bear in mind, though, that this pot can only be handwashed. And because of its sturdy design, it is heavy, so those who might be less able could struggle to lift it in and out of the sink.

Spooky season is officially here, and many of us will be joining in on the fun by decorating our homes. But did you know that one popular decoration can actually cause more harm than good to local wildlife?

If you have young kids, or just like an excuse to get creative with your home, your mind is likely running wild with Halloween decor ideas. However, experts are urging us to rethink how we decorate this Halloween, warning that fake spider webs can cause harm to friendly creatures like birds, hedgehogs, bats and insects.

I asked the wildlife experts all you need to know, including the wildlife-friendly decor alternatives you can try instead.

Why are fake spider webs harmful?

More and more houses this year are embracing Halloween this year by using fake spiders web decorations outdoors. But these playful props can take a nasty turn for many native wildlife species.

‘Wildlife can easily become caught in fake spider web decorations commonly used around Halloween, especially the artificial cobwebs,’ explains Lucy Taylor, wildlife expert from Vine House Farm. ‘Compared to real spider webs that break apart easily under the weight or larger animals, synthetic spider web decorations can be made from tough, stretchy plastic that can become tightly wrapped around wildlife.’

‘The stretchy, cotton-style webbing sold for Halloween is made of fine synthetic fibres that are very hard for an animal to break or bite through,’ agrees Mosh Latifi, co-owner of EcoCare Pest Management. ‘Once a bird, bat or small mammal gets a wing, foot or leg caught, the more it struggles and the tighter the strands wrap. It is a bigger problem than most people realise because the decoration is designed to cling to whatever touches it.’

Not only are birds, bats and hedgehogs at risk of getting trapped in fake spider webs, but the decorations also pose a risk if ingested by wildlife. ‘The non-biodegradable plastics or fine mesh can be picked up by small animals like hedgehogs or foxes, and poses a serious choking on internal blockage hazard,’ explains Lucy. ‘Many birds also use real spider silk when building their nests, and cannot distinguish between natural and artificial spider webs,’ leading to an increased risk.

There are two kinds of fake webbing that seem to be popular around this time of year. Spray webs designed for use on hedgerows are known to put animals at risk, with wildlife experts issuing warnings about them most years. However, the larger, plastic webbing – which seems to be increasingly popular this year – can be just as dangerous.

‘Spray-on webbing is less of a tangling risk once it has dried, though it can still coat small insects and hang about in hedges and shrubs. But the bigger concern is the stretchy cotton-style webbing and the larger netted webs,’ explains Mosh. ‘These work in the same way as garden netting. Anything with holes wide enough to get a head, wing or leg through is a risk, especially when it is hung outside, over hedges, or left up for weeks.’

What to do if you see wildlife stuck in a web decoration?

This Halloween there seems to have been a rise in spider web decor, so I asked the experts how you should help if you witness an animal in distress.

Generally, you should always contact a local organisation (like the RSPCA) first before attempting to help the animal yourself. ‘If you find wildlife tangled in a spider web decoration, you should resist the urge to untangle and release it, as it may have injuries that are not obvious at first and may require medical attention,’ advises Lucy. ‘Instead, contact a local wildlife rescue or organisation for guidance. Once the wildlife has been safely removed and handed over to rescuers, remove any remaining outdoor web decorations to prevent other wildlife being trapped.’

However, if you are advised to help the animal yourself, it’s important to remain calm and take precautions. ‘Stay calm and keep your distance at first,’ says Mosh. ‘Frightened animals can bite or scratch, so wear thick gloves and, for a larger animal, wrap it loosely in a towel.'

'Do not pull the strands of the web, as this can tighten them. Use small, blunt-ended scissors to cut the webbing away in pieces, taking great care not to cut the animal,' he adds. 'If you cannot free it safely, or it is injured, put it in a ventilated box somewhere quiet and call the RSPCA or a local wildlife rescue again.’

How to decorate instead

Just because outdoor webs might not be the best choice of Halloween decor, it doesn’t mean you can’t still have fun with the holiday. ‘If you already have fake spider web decorations these are better used inside only, where they will not pose a risk to wildlife,’ suggest Lucy.

‘If you are decorating the exterior of your home for Halloween, try to use decorations that do not contain plastics. Try to use solid objects over decorations that use ropes, ribbons, string or any other materials that could cause animals to become tangled,’ she adds.

Plus, you should be careful with your pumpkin decor too. ‘If decorating with pumpkins, these should be brought inside at night so that they are not eaten by animals as they can make certain wildlife unwell,’ says Lucy.

This week, H&M Home officially opened its Christmas shop. The brand’s festive offering is filled with Scandi-inspired decor and pared-back designs. I'm holding BBC 1's The Traitors largely responsible for the resurgence of this classic pattern alongside tartan. 'While open shelving styled with ceramics and wooden chopping boards can add character, consider how practical it will be day to day, particularly around cooking areas where dust and grease can build up,' says Nadine Kimani, brand kitchen expert for Kutchenhaus. '

Al fresco gatherings aren't just for summer – if you know how to transition your garden for outdoor living in autumn, you'll have a cosy venue for guests and the family.

Temperatures are plummeting by the week, but with a few outdoor living room ideas, you can continue spending time in your garden for even longer. Shelter, warmth and light are essentials for outdoor gatherings in autumn – and a few accessories can make the setup even cosier.

‘Solar-powered festoon lights are an elegant choice for outdoor spaces all year round,’ says Claire Bassett, lighting trends expert from Lights4fun. ‘In autumn, I would style them around bare-branched trees – the lights would highlight the natural shape of the branches after the leaves have fallen, bringing a beautiful sense of structure to the garden.’

With a few shelter, heating and lighting ideas, you can easily transition a garden into a cosy space for autumn outdoor living.

Suzy and her family have lived in their home for three years, but from the outset the bathroom never quite worked. ‘It was very plain,’ Suzy says. ‘White tiles, white towels.’ The bigger issue was less visible. ‘The thermostat for the shower was broken,’ she says, ‘so we had to lower the water temperature of the whole house so the kids didn’t burn themselves!’

Taking on the renovation herself felt like a natural step. ‘I’ve always done DIY,’ Suzy says. ‘Ever since I was a child, I’d help my parents with bathroom makeovers or decorate my sister’s bedroom.’

Over time, she’s tackled more ambitious projects. ‘I’ve been able to get more adventurous, and as the spaces have got bigger, it’s been really exciting.’ Stripping out the old bathroom proved to be the biggest challenge.

‘It was all tiled completely into the wall,’ she explains. ‘Whoever fitted it had cemented everything in, so I had to chip it off by hand. I thought it would take a week off work to finish, but it turned into a five-week project,’ she says.

Once everything was removed, new challenges emerged. ‘We were left with uneven walls, so I tried my hand at plastering.’ Family support played a key role. ‘My father-in-law has been very helpful. He’s really skilled with all sorts but particularly plumbing and electrics,’ she says. ‘It was amazing to spend time with him and learn those skills.’

The room was rebuilt with a more practical layout. ‘We redirected the pipes so they sit at the top of the bath,’ she says. Bathroom ventilation was another priority. ‘There was previously no extractor and some damp, so we exposed an air brick and wired in an extractor through the ceiling, linked to the lighting.’

The classic vanity was a bargain buy. ‘I was looking at vintage vanity units online, all costing hundreds of pounds, and thought I could make one myself. I found a £25 chest of drawers from a charity shop and turned it into a basin unit. We kept the original bath and refreshed it by replacing all the sealant.’

Once all the tiling and furniture had been completed, it was then time to decorate. ‘I painted the window frame to tie everything together,' says Suzy, 'then I added artwork.'

The result has been worth all the hard work. ‘Blood, sweat and tears have gone into the project,’ she says, ‘but we’re really happy with the end result; I’m so proud of it. And the brushed brass shower, taps and finishing touches (all from Drench) are just so beautiful.’

The finished space even impresses the youngest member of the family. ‘Our six-year-old took a friend upstairs for a bathroom reveal,’ Suzy says. ‘They know how much work went into it.’

Get the look

Now, we all know that Christmas bedding can be a little divisive. However, if you're on the fence about festive duvet sets, I think that the newly launched and *very* tasteful M&S Christmas bedding collection could be the range to convince you that this is the year to bring Yuletide to the bedroom.

When it comes to where to buy bedding, as Ideal Home's Sleep Editor, M&S is always one of my top recommendations for stylish and practical bedding. However, even I wasn't expecting to be quite as impressed by the brand's Christmas bedding range as I am.

The collection has just launched online and in-store and features a couple of standout pieces, including my personal favourite, the M&S Woodland Pure Cotton Jacquard Bedding Set.

It's classic, Christmassy, and compared to the often slightly tacky festive duvet sets most shops are filled with this time of year, I think very tastefully designed. Plus, its mix of traditional themes and contemporary design makes it a timeless option that you can get out of your Christmas storage box year after year.

But what I've found even more impressive are the more 'neutral' designs on offer, especially the *very* affordable M&S Brushed Cotton Checked Reversible Bedding Set, which starts from £20 for a single duvet set.

To my mind, this is the perfect Christmas bedding; its colourful red and green gingham design ticks all the festive boxes, but it isn't *so* themed that you can't still have it on your bed from November through to March if you wish.

It's also made from brushed cotton, and we all know that brushed cotton bedding is *the* cosiest option to have on your bed during the cold seasons.

And it seems I'm not alone in appreciating its budget-friendly festive vibes. Although it's still only October, according to the M&S website, more than 50 of these gingham bedding sets have been sold online in the last few days.

Plus, there are plenty more low-key and understated Christmas options, such as the pretty M&S Pure Cotton Yarn Dyed Checked Bedding Set with its festive bows and classic red check.

I was impressed by M&S's autumn bedding collection, naming it one of the best the high street has to offer if you're looking to refresh your bedroom design ideas this season. And now, I think the brand has done it again with its Christmas bedding range.

I certainly think this is the most stylish Christmas bedding collection I've come across, and whilst other retailers have some tasteful options – I'm thinking the John Lewis Christmas bedding collection for understated vibes or Next's Christmas bedding collection for cosy fleece options – overall, M&S has nailed it best for me this year.

I've rounded up a few more of my favourite Marks & Spencer festive options below.

If you have a toddler, then you know the struggle of being asked to build a fort. It's an experience that will turn your luxurious, carefully chosen sofa cushions into walls and that super soft sofa throws into a ceiling, all to get jumped on and trampled on the floor. That's before we get to discovering the embarrassing amount of crumbs and toys that have made their way underneath your sofa since you last looked. The whole situation might end up in tears, from both of us that is.

Well, I've found a way to avoid the entire fort-making situation, but still guarantee the fun. I'm talking about H&M's new Table Tent. Yes, it takes up your dining table, but what it doesn't say in the small print is that it'll keep them entertained for literal hours, and the christmas version is so darn cute. PSA: the Halloween design has sold out, so don't expect this design to last that long either!

It has a dedicated door and even a window, fitted with roll-down curtains so they can ignore you for longer and pretend you're not trying to make eye contact because dinner is ready. Arguably, the best thing about it has to be that it folds away into a bag after playtime. Unlike other playhouses I've owned, it's both cheaper at under £30 and this one won't take up a third of my living room, and cause chaos every time I need to put it down. In fact, I might leave it out all December long...

Not only is this a genius alternative to an actual play tent that requires a lot of floor space, but it's a clever tactic to keep them in the kitchen so that you can keep an eye on their antics whilst cooking dinner. My 3-year-old would go crazy for this, so I've already added it to my basket. My dog, on the other hand, might find himself stuck in here being served tea and wooden biscuits for quite some time.

Made from 100% polyester, this sheet fits most standard rectangular dining tables. Its Christmas design features candy canes, Christmas trees, presents and stars to bring whimsy to your kitchen or dining room ideas.

This table tent would make a great gift idea for a toddler in your life who loves imaginative play. At £30, it really is a bargain, and it'll prove itself handy through November and December. What about afterwards? H&M does sell a regular version of this table tent, for the same price of £29.99, which is decorated to look like a French-style cafe, in pastel blue and pink to ensure it's perfectly gender neutral. However it is currently out of stock, so you'll need to sign up for notifications for it coming back in.

So, why not change things up for November and December and put your now-boring tablecloth away in a drawer? Make space for this and thank us later — for the entertainment value and the extra living room floor space that you'll need by the time your tree is tossed out of the loft.

Nothing screams cosy quite like a log burner crackling away in the corner, leaving the room bathed in a warm glow.

If you've been dreaming of a wood burning stove for years but have reached an impasses because of your home's lack of chimney, the good news is all may not be lost.

While log burner ventilation is crucial to an installation that meets the building regulations requirements for appliances like this, you can achieve a compliant result, even if you don't have a chimney.

Can you still have a log burner if you don't have a chimney?

Yes, you can absolutely have a log burner if you don't have a traditional chimney, but you will need some way for the smoke to be safely taken away from your home.

'A twin-wall flue system is the go-to solution for wood-burning stove installation in a home without a chimney,’ says Adam Leah, Founder and Director of Direct Stoves. ‘Essentially, this system acts as an artificial chimney, providing a safe exit for the smoke and fumes. Twin wall flues typically comprise two concentric metal tubes with insulation in between. They can run either through the home or externally along the outside.

'When deciding on the route of the flue, there are two options: an internal or external system. An internal system travels inside the home, usually through a room or loft, and exits through the roof. It’s slightly more efficient when it comes to heat retention but involves more internal work. Whereas with an external system, the flue runs outside the building; this is typically easier to install, and there is less disruption to the home’s interior.'

But there is another option, that might especially suit those looking to add character to their home. 'Another option is to build a false chimney, this can enhance the aesthetic appeal of your wood-burning stove, by creating a characterful setting; ideal for rooms lacking an original chimney structure,' explains Adam. 'Not only does it create a focal point, but it can be used to cleverly hide the flue system.'

But as you make your aesthetic choices about the direction of the flue, you will need to consider the technical aspects too, as Jon Butterworth, Director at Arada, explains: 'An exposed flue will need to have a minimum height of 4.5 metres whether it is internal or external.

'You will need to check that the termination point material is suitable for the flue and flashing kit to be fitted; wood, metal and brick would be ideal, but for obvious reasons, glass and plastic would not.'

When it comes to the process and cost, this can vary depending on the complexity of the project, says Adam Pederson, MD at Topstak: ‘The process typically involves a certified installer, a HETAS-registered engineer, who surveys the route, installs the flue and issues a Building Regulations compliance certificate.

'Costs vary by the complexity and length of the run, but a typical installation ranges from around £1,500 to £4,000 including labour. Disruption is relatively minimal compared to traditional chimney construction and most installations are completed in a day.'

Where can you put a log burner if you don't have a chimney?

If you're worried you might be limited on where you can put your log burner, the good news is that you might have more flexibility than you think.

'The flue can exit through a wall or the roof, which means a stove can be positioned in a room without a traditional chimney breast,' says Adam Pederson. 'The key limitations are building regulations around the flue route, clearance distances from combustible materials and planning considerations if the property is listed or in a conservation area. An external flue running up the outside of a building is often the simplest and most cost-effective route where internal installation is complicated.'

Are there kinds of burners that don't require a flue or chimney?

While log burning stoves will need some kind of flue in order to expel the smoke, there are other options that will suit homes where adding a flue just isn't feasible.

Bioethanol fires offer a completely different proposition,' explains Jon Butterworth, Director at Arada. 'Instead of solid fuel, they burn liquid bioethanol - a renewable fuel derived from plant by-products. One of their biggest advantages is that they don’t require a chimney or flue as they produce no smoke, soot or ash.

'This makes bioethanol fires particularly appealing for modern homes, apartments or spaces where installing a flue system isn’t possible. They are typically easy to install and can offer a sleek, contemporary aesthetic.'

But if your stove's heat output is the primary driver behind your decision, then this may not be the option for you.

'While bioethanol fires provide beautiful, real flames, they generally produce less heat output than wood or multi-fuel stoves,' reveals Jon. 'They’re often chosen for ambience rather than as a primary heat source. Fuel can also be more expensive per kilowatt hour compared to seasoned logs.

'For homeowners prioritising design flexibility and simplicity over high heat performance, bioethanol may be the right fit.'

For a real budget and renter-friendly alternative, electric stoves that offer a realistic flame effect and decent heat output are another option. They require no set up or ongoing fuel purchases, and can simply be plugged in and you're ready to go.

As the evenings and mornings suddenly got much darker, I looked at my bathroom with a fresh set of eyes. What once felt clean and fresh in the summer now feels stark and uninviting as the temperature has dropped, so I've been on the hunt for small touches to help bring warmth back into my bathroom.

When I was introduced to Quince's linen shower curtain, I knew it was the small tweak that has the potential to turn a practical necessity into a feature that creates texture and adds cosiness to a bathroom. 'Unlike plastic or polyester options that have been a mainstay for far too long, linen has a natural texture and soft drape that instantly makes the space feel warmer and more relaxed, more like a boutique hotel than a functional room,' he adds.

While the appearance of cotton and linen is ultra stylish, they're practical too - so you can have it all.

"Linen is also a practical choice. It's naturally breathable, and its texture softens beautifully over time,' James continues.

Neutral colours of cotton and linen shower curtains add a lived-in, pared-back look, but it's also a great opportunity to add colour and pattern. 'For me, a ticking stripe is timeless, introducing subtle pattern and character to make a bathroom all the more welcoming,' recommends Lucy Uren Purdy, founder of Rowen & Wren.

This week, Aldi’s scented candle advent calendar is landing in stores. First introduced last year, Aldi’s bringing back the £24.99 calendar - with the price point staying the same as last year - set to launch this Sunday 25th October. But I got my hands on the calendar ahead of the release and got to try and assess its contents, value for money and more.

I got a first look at the best advent calendar on a budget at the Aldi Christmas Specialbuys preview earlier this month. But that only left me wanting an up-close look and hands-on try of the calendar – and I was lucky enough to be granted this wish. And after getting my hands on it, I really believe it’s one of the best value-for-money advent calendars I’ve seen and tried this year.

I was most impressed with the presentation, look and the feel of the actual calendar which comes across as more expensive than its £24.99 price tag. It features a gingerbread house design made from thick card – Aldi describes it as a reusable calendar which I fully get behind. You could definitely keep the box and fill it with your choice of little treats next Christmas.

Once you open the calendar, you’re greeted with 25 whimsically illustrated little drawers, each containing a 40g mini candle. There are five different seasonal scented candles which repeat throughout the calendar - my favourite Iced Berries, Hot Cocoa, Frosted Fir, White Christmas and Cinnamon Spice - but on the 25th, you’ll be treated to something a little different in the form of the only Warm Gingerbread candle which is pretty delicious.

If you were to compare this scented candle advent calendar to some of the pricier alternatives like the hugely popular John Lewis scented candle advent calendar, you do get what you pay for when it comes to the actual candles and their scents. In other words, the scented candles in other advent calendars with higher price points smell nicer and look more expensive (since they are).

But if you’re after an affordable but pretty candle advent calendar, whether it’s a gift or as a little treat for yourself, I couldn’t recommend this Aldi one enough.

Just like all of Aldi’s Specialbuys, this advent calendar, too, is reserved only for the supermarket’s physical stores. So I wish you luck on Sunday and hopefully you’ll get to snap one up from the middle aisle.

It may still be too early for Christmas cheer for many, but I just spotted what I think is about to be a must-have for the cosiest time of the year: Next's new Gingerbread Hot Chocolate Station (£45).

This year's Christmas decor trends have all embraced a return to the traditional motifs of the festive season that we all know and love from our childhood – gingerbread included. And seeing as Next has already had a huge hit with its sellout gingerbread Christmas tree skirt, it seems plausible that this adorable hot chocolate station kit could go the same way.

If Google Trends are anything to go by, there's a growing appetite for DIY hot chocolate stations in the UK – the term is reportedly up 12% to +18% year on year. It's now my firm belief that in every renovation, there is one room that acts as both carrot and stick as you wade through the often sludgy, seemingly endless weeks or more often, months of your project.

The proverbial carrot is the big shiny dream that literally keeps you going. A vision of one room so perfect for your needs, your home, your life, that you constantly think of it; quite often it will be the one room you have finished designing and maybe buying things for, long before the dream is due to become a reality.

The stick, however, is that this then acts as a measure against which all renovation progress is made or not made. Just HOW much longer before that meticulously imagined mirage can be realised and all will finally be well in the world? Well, in my home at least. You get the gist.

With this comes both extreme excitement, joy, optimism and crucially motivation. The flip side is frustration, annoyance and sheer desperation.

I exaggerate of course, however dramatic intent aside, I feel sure all renovators can or will at some point experience this to some extent.

In our case, the hallowed space was our living room, and in true carrot and stick style, of all the many rooms and parts of the project, this one has truly lived up to the legend.

Creating our forever home and Everything living room

We both have ADHD, which screams very loudly against chaos. We like space and organisation and have struggled (also argued a LOT!) in previous homes with overfilled multi-purpose rooms.

The kitchen/diner/living room also serving as an office? That was fun. The spare room which frequently and frantically morphed between wardrobe/dumping ground/office/guest room/gym. A veritable nuclear bomb in more ways than one.

We waited a long time to be able to do something about it, and moving to this apartment was our chance to create a Forever home.

Whilst it was very similar in style, proportions and original features to our beloved old apartment, it also had a large garden, which allowed us to extend and build, fulfilling our long-awaited and hard worked for ambition of a room for everything.

Well, almost everything. I’m not allowed a Christmas room. The other half very firmly put his foot down on that. Hopefully not on a box of my vintage baubles.

But we do have a primary bedroom suite of connected rooms with a partitioned room for just the bed, walk-in wardrobes, a vanity area and bathroom, separated from the main apartment.

A new extension creating a spacious kitchen/pantry/diner and connecting to a new office. A separate summerhouse annexe creating another office, a gym and a guest suite.

And the crowning glory, a living room, filled with books and art, lots of comfy seats and expansive leafy views. No desk. No dining table. Just pure relaxation and joy.

This will be the room where our beloved Everything feeling can be protectively nurtured and thrive easily. Walking in will immerse us in immediate joy, contentment and escapism, resetting our fraught nervous systems and gently pulling us into being present.

It will be a warm, communal space for us to spend time alone, together and with friends and family, as we lay around relaxing, napping, chatting, listening to music, reading, watching films, playing games. A seat or comfortable cushion for everyone, perfectly lit for every situation, art and books to spark conversation (not that it’s massively needed in our circle of exuberantly chatty characters; the other half and I probably being the worst culprits!).

That was our carrot as we embarked upon this two year project – the room we dreamt of and couldn’t wait to bring to life. But, of course, it’s been the longest to materialise and jeez, has it been one very spiky stick.

Learning the lessons from our old apartment

The living room in our last apartment was very similar to this in terms of dimensions, proportions and features, but thanks to our small kitchen, it had to double up as a dining room as well. This of course somewhat squashed the beauty of the room, its purpose and how we wanted to live in it.

I’d also made unforced errors. I didn't unify the alcove joinery; on one side we built cabinetry to enclose the TV, with bookshelves running up to the coving. However, the other alcove, with the same shelving, didn’t have the matching cabinet. This asymmetry bugged me constantly and disproportionately.

And then there was the cheap replica fireplace, which we never got around to sorting out. It stood out like a sore thumb against the craft of the original features and drove me wild.

The cased opening worked brilliantly to create open-plan living and connect the room to the central atrium of the kitchen and hallway, whilst also being sympathetic to the period property. However, the layout of the adjoining rooms meant it had to be right aligned, which obliterated any chance of symmetry and always annoyed me, even though there was no way around it. Can you tell I’ve got a thing about symmetry yet?

We took advantage of the grand bay window and its expansive views down to the sea by building a window seat, which handily served as a dining nook. But it interrupted the flow of the room and ate up floor space I would much have preferred to use for a chair I had squirrelled away in storage, waiting patiently for the perfect home. My poor chair waited a few more years before that opportunity arose…

These were all the things I held in my mind when we viewed our new apartment for the first time and walked into a practically identical living room, ripe with potential.

Two problems, one architectural solution

We approached the build and renovation in two phases. Phase one was renovating the existing apartment. The primary bedroom suite shot up in no time, creating a much-needed sanctuary from the works.

Next was the living room. Once first fix had been completed it was onto creating the cased opening. This was essential, not just for our preferred open-plan style, but also to revive the hallway.

Albeit a long and majestic space with sweeping high ceilings and intricate coving, it had zero natural light. Not ideal for both the entryway and connecting backbone of the apartment; linking the primary bedroom suite, living room, eventual home to a cloakroom, then leading into the new extension with its kitchen/pantry/diner.

The living room is southwest facing and graced with a lusciously verdant view of huge trees, through which elegant red brick mansions can be glimpsed. Every moment offers the experience and full effect of the seasons and weather. The sun may creep round mid-morning and bathe the whole room in glorious light, or perhaps a ferocious storm will lash the huge windows with rain, whilst the trees sway buffeted by strong winds. All of this can be enjoyed from this vantage point; brilliant for a living room and even better for an entry hall.

Structural engineer engaged, plans approved, the work on our grand new cased opening commenced. This time, it centred precisely to the middle of the wall, facing the fireplace and providing the perfect sightline from the front door into the garden. The borrowed light transformed this once dingy and dark space creating a welcoming and dynamic hallway.

Restoring the dream

Then onto restoration. Whilst a beautiful apartment blessed with original features, years of neglect meant it had fallen into a sad state of repair.

Thankfully, and somewhat miraculously the huge ornate ceiling rose was in near perfect condition, however the same could not be said for the delicate lace-like cornice. Thankfully we found a wonderful local restoration expert, who magically vanished the gaping holes, making it like new.

The wooden fireplace was replaced with the original Carrara marble fireplace reclaimed from our bedroom, lovingly restored to pristine glory by yet another highly skilled and passionate local craftsperson. Finished with a woodburner and Italian slate hearth, the room finally regained the majesty of its former days, ready to begin its new chapter as the warming heart of our home.

Never forget the importance of good bones

Those of you who regularly frequent my fortnightly tales will be familiar with my obsession for good bones. Those permanent fixtures and fittings that subtly elevate a space, stand the test of time and importantly, create cohesion throughout a home.

In my case, it was back to my old faithfuls to complete the living room, bringing back the quality stars that had shone in the old apartment and already taken their place in the primary bedroom suite. If it ain’t broke…

First up, laying my much-loved Flooring Superstore Cambridge Bavarian Oak Chevron flooring – there might have been actual tears the day this went down and the sunshine brought the golden tones of my new floor to softly glowing life. This flooring lives in every room of our apartment, including the summerhouse, and in further testament to my love for it, we also used a similar version of darker oak in the old apartment. It’s a decision I take pleasure in every time my bare feet caress the soft grooves and grain of the wood.

Radiators came in the form of my favourite bronze Paladin Bartholomew from Trade Radiators. We all know that radiators can be design features, as well as functional and this one definitely understood the brief. Softly curved, yet statuesque and elegant, it lends a period-friendly architectural detail and acts as an unexpected, yet stunning sculpture.

Last but not least, bronze switches and sockets c/o my go-to Corston Architectural. An investment, certainly, but with slim profiles, elegant form and subtly sophisticated materiality and finish, one worth making.

Joinery at any cost

Restoration complete and bones in place, it was onto the joinery and my longed-for shelves to release my books from their prison in storage.

The phasing of the extension build, and therefore our kitchen, required a makeshift solution in the living room to see us through three months whilst work was completed. I refused to allow any overspill into the bedroom suite, holding fast in the belief we needed to protect one space from the creep of chaos.

So, the living room became our de-facto one room living space.

We bought two handy portable kitchen units and installed temporary shelving, which could be used as part of our setup and then finished properly when the time came. We then created two zones; a small seating area with our sofas, and a kitchen with a dining table, also acting as a desk, with numerous boxes and materials stacked in any free space. As you can imagine, I was in hell.

However, when planning our survival room, I knew one wall would remain untouched, so embarked upon a typically Francesca plan of pushing through with installation of beautiful cabinetry and shelving on either side of the fireplace. When they were fully decorated, we decided to paint the wall too. Note the singular there. Yes, dear friends, I finished one side of the room perfectly, whilst the rest of it was basically a dumpster hellfire.

It made sense to me; I rescued some of my books from storage and set them up to striking effect in their new home. When sitting on the sofa, looking at the magnificent fireplace and watching TV (neatly encased in cabinetry mirrored perfectly in the other alcove – live it, learn it), you could almost imagine the room was finished. Just keep those blinkers on and block it all out. In truth it did kind of work and I was happy to take any wins or small signs of progress I could.

I won’t bore you by regurgitating the torturous details, however needless to say planning delays meant three months turned into nine. I repeat, NINE months of our waking life squeezed unceremoniously, noisily and dustily into this one room. The motivational carrot of my dream room was a distant memory, and instead I had a very hard beating from the stick reminding me daily just how far we were from finishing.

Eventually the kitchen was completed, and we gradually reclaimed the space. The units and the table went. The sofas were rearranged. We could actually walk around the room without sustaining minor injury and a sort of calm started to settle.

It was time for the rest of the joinery. Matching bookshelves running up the ceiling on both sides of the cased opening, also mirroring the joinery on the facing wall. This creates a very pleasing symmetry, not to mention finally enough storage for our books.

I won’t linger on the point the shelves are already near full to bursting. We'll cross that bridge another day. And no, it doesn’t mean I will stop buying books.

Bringing our Everything living room to life

As we finally reach the end of our two-year project, (I know I’ve written those words many times before, however this time I actually think it’s true) the living room is within grasping distance. The boxes are clear, things are slowly coming to life, and we can finally see the living room we've imagined for these past few years.

In my next column, it’s onto completing the decoration; lighting, furniture, soft furnishings and art. All the incredibly sexy things I’ve been dreaming about for three years, which are now mostly bought, and some already in situ, such as my Vogue magazine coffee table of dreams.

In the meantime, we’ve realised that although it’s a rather wondrous experience every time we begin to complete and use a room properly, this one is even more special having been so long in the making and through so many different incarnations.

We’re falling in love with our home that little bit more. All the memories of stress and horrific never ending expense have started to fade away.

We could not wish for a stronger feeling of Everything. It’s in every single corner, every clean line of joinery, the soft curves of the marble fireplace, the view onto the autumnal trees in our garden and beyond. And there’s even more to come when we finish decorating and dressing it.

We feel like we belong here. We now know without a shadow of a doubt that we have made the right decision, and it definitely has been worth it. Phew.

It’s no secret that everyone loves The Traitors. In fact, I’ll be the first to admit that I spend all year waiting for chaos to unfold at the round table. But now, the fun can continue long after the final airs, thanks to the launch of three Traitors-inspired mouse decorations.

Yep, you heard that right! You can get your hands on an array of traitorous mouse decorations this Christmas, with a fringed Claudia ‘Winklemouse’ leading the pack.

With trends like merrymaxxing proving popular, novelty Christmas decorations are having a real moment. And among them all, mouse decorations are the stars of the show.

When the decoration first hit the shops it immediately went viral – one TikTok showing off the mouse gained 200k views and over 18k likes. Unsurprisingly, this level of hype makes the Winklemouse a hot commodity. It’s already sold out from Selfridges, and stock levels are looking low elsewhere.

However, the mouse is available to pre-order on Anthropologie, so be quick if you want to get your hands on one this festive season. Usually, items like this sell out immediately once the pre-order is lifted. So time is of the essence!

The mouse currently has an expected ship date of 2nd November; perfect timing to curb those Traitors blues after the final of the Celebrity Traitors airs on 30th October.

And just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, the brand has also launched two cloaked mice – with a plush velvet green cloak if you’re team traitors, and red if you’re routing for the faithfuls.

At £19 per mouse, these decorations aren’t cheap. But they’re well worth the investment for some seasonal fun.

Before you learn how to repot a Christmas cactus, you’ll need to pin down the best time to do it – and since the popular houseplants are about to burst into bloom for the festive season, it’s wise to think twice before repotting them this month.

So, when is the best time to repot a Christmas cactus? I asked the experts.

What you'll need

If you’re trying to figure out when to repot a Christmas cactus, you’ll need to wait until after your plant has finished blooming – and that’s a long way away yet.

‘The best time to repot a Christmas cactus is in spring, once it has finished flowering,’ says Jo Lambell, founder of Beards & Daisies. ‘That’s when it starts putting on new growth, so it settles into its new pot much more easily.’

So, repotting should be on your list of things to do with a Christmas cactus after flowering. Only if your plant needs it, though, because a cosy pot isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

‘They don’t need repotting often,’ continues Jo. ‘The Christmas cactus actually likes being a little snug in its pot, and that can even help it flower, so every two or three years is plenty.’

If your Christmas cactus is due an upgrade, you can buy specialist potting mixes like the Westland Cacti & Succulent Potting Mix from Amazon.

I also asked Jo if it’s possible to repot a Christmas cactus in autumn.

‘I’d leave it until spring,’ she said. ‘October is when a Christmas cactus starts setting its flower buds. Disturbing it now can make it drop those buds, and you’d lose your Christmas flowers.’

The only exception is if you’ve got a very unhealthy plant on your hands, and it’s looking like your Christmas cactus won’t flower anyway.

‘The only time I’d repot in October is if you have to, like a cracked pot or soggy, rotting roots,’ Jo explains. ‘If so, be gentle, keep the root ball as intact as you can, and put it straight back into the same spot. The Christmas cactus doesn’t like change while it’s budding, so avoid moving it around too much.’

You could even propagate your Christmas cactus if it’s really beyond help – but again, this is best done in spring.

‘If parts of the plant are rotten, cut them off and try to grow new plants from healthy sections,’ says Andy Little, houseplant buyer at British Garden Centres.

In the height of summer, I was introduced to Tefal’s latest innovation, the ‘YumMeal ’. At that point in time, the clever appliance was so new (and revolutionary) that it didn’t even have a name. However, it had a clear USP that intrigued me: a ‘personal cooker’ that aimed to make cooking for one easier, and dare I say, more exciting?

The new YumMeal from Tefal combines air frying and induction cooking into one relatively small appliance (23cm x 26cm x 36cm) that looks a little like a waffle maker. It has a built-in enamel bowl that you not only prep and cook food in, but also eat directly out of. It’s designed to be the perfect kitchen-to-sofa appliance, whipping up meals in just 15 minutes- a game-changer for anyone cooking for one.

I currently live with a partner, but before that, I spent a good 10 years cooking for one. Over that time, I grew frustrated that nearly every recipe involved cooking for two, so I’d have to eat it over two nights or force dinner on one of my hungry flatmates. So I was delighted to find that Tefal were finally going the extra mile to make one-person dinners feel celebratory.

While I’m impressed by the YumMeal concept, I do have questions about how likely it is to transform solo dining. It has a RRP of £199.99, which feels steep when you can pick up a compact Ninja air fryer for £109 at John Lewis, the best air fryers are the speedy appliance I usually turn to when cooking a quick dinner for one these days.

However, the cost of Tefal's new gadget is justified when you consider it's two appliances in one: an air fryer that can crisp, and an induction hob that can cook and simmer. It essentially replaces a full kitchen ecosystem, with the added perk that the two functions can be used together at the touch of a button.

The YumMeal is not quite as easy as shoving a ready meal in the microwave, something I do also turn to when my partner is out for the evening, which is why I can’t see this product replacing them in my small kitchen. But I think where this appliance shines is as an investment for students who are trying to claim space in a shared kitchen or anyone who lives alone and hates reheating leftovers/enjoys being more creative with dinner.

If I still lived alone, I can see myself batch-prepping ingredients at the start of the week, and then using the YumMeal to make cooking from scratch as quick, easy and cost-effective as possible. Tefal also included the recipe for a one-person lemon drizzle cake as part of the launch, which piqued my interest for those days when you’re craving a single-portion sweet treat.

I haven't personally tested the YumMeal, but from what I saw when it was being demoed at the Tefal showcase, it has alot of potential. I can't wait to put it to the test and see if it really could replace the microwave meal for kitchens across the UK.

Alternatives

Is there a tree overhanging your garden, or is a hedge causing a little issue with your neighbours?

Who owns a tree and/or hedge between two houses can be a contentious problem to deal with and is similar to 'who owns a fence', especially when the boundary is unclear – the 'left-hand rule' is now deemed a widespread property myth, where we all thought that the left side of our gardens was ours.

So how do we find out who owns the tree or hedge, and what other issues can arise in this situation? We ask our experts who give us the lowdown on what's what.

1. Establish ownership

Determining ownership is the first port of call before anyone can move forward if the tree or hedge has become a problem.

'The place to start when trying to find out who owns a tree or hedge is to check your house deeds – which you can do by using the HM Land Registry,' advises Lucie Bradley, gardening and greenhouse expert at Harvst Automatic Watering. 


Lucie explains, 'When you check your house deeds you should find boundaries marked with a thick red line which outlines the general extent of your property, though this is not millimetre precise. However, you can also look on the deeds for ‘T’ marks, which you should see on the inside of the boundary line – if the ‘T’ is on your side, then you are responsible for that boundary feature – whether it’s a fence or wall. You may also see two ‘T’ marks placed next to each other on a boundary line - so they form a ‘H’ and this indicates that you share responsibility.'

This is the best place to start, but not always as straightforward as we might like.

2. Trunk positioning

The key is to determine where the trunk or main stem sits in relation to the legal boundary.

Kara Gammall, home insurance expert at MoneySuperMarket says, 'If the trunk is entirely on one property, the tree will generally belong to the owner of that land, even if its branches or roots subsequently grow into a neighbour’s garden.'

It’s also worth remembering that the position of a fence isn’t necessarily definitive proof of the legal boundary – you don't want to break the law in your own garden. 'Over time, fence boundaries can move, so check the property deeds or any historic documents before assuming anything,' advises Kara.

3. If it straddles the boundary line

'If the trunk straddles the boundary, establishing ownership can be more complicated,' says Kara.

In this instance, it can be worth talking to your neighbour to see if you can come to an agreement.

'You can also inspect the hedge or tree to work out, according to the border of your property, if its base or main stems are planted on your side,' suggests Lucie. 'If it is half on your side and half on your neighbour's, then this implies it is a ‘shared’ item, and you should make an agreement with each other regarding its care or whether it needs heavy pruning or removal, and you both need to agree before carrying out any irreversible changes.'

4. Encroaching branches

This can be a common problem, especially during spring and summer when trees and hedges become more lush.

'If your neighbour’s branches or roots are growing over your boundary, you generally have the right to prune a tree back to the encroaching growth on your side of the boundary,' advises Kara. 'However, you shouldn’t cross onto your neighbour’s land or cut anything beyond your boundary without permission. It’s also sensible to speak to your neighbour before carrying out work, particularly where substantial pruning could affect the health or stability of the tree.'

Another thing to consider is if your neighbour has a fruit tree and they aren't picking up the fruit, as it can become a pest issue.

5. Protected trees

'It’s also worth remembering that you can’t legally ask your neighbour to cut down or prune part of a healthy tree just because you don’t like the appearance,' shares Kara. 'Some trees may be protected by a Tree Preservation Order (TPO).'

Ian Wilson, managing director and home insurance expert at Tiger.co.uk, agrees, 'Checking whether a tree is subject to a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) is essential, as pruning a protected tree without permission can lead to serious legal consequences and fines of up to £20,000. Another thing to be aware of is if birds are nesting, as it is illegal to disturb or harm nesting birds under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.'

You can find out if the tree has a TPO attached to it via your local council; they should have a section on their website for Tree Preservation Orders and Conservation Areas. You then type in your postcode, and it should show up if there are any. Or try TPO Checker which will give you an approximate idea, but you will still need to contact your local council for more specific details.

Tree and hedge pruning essentials

'Ultimately, where a tree sits directly on a boundary, or there is disagreement over who owns it, it’s better to establish the legal position before carrying out any work,' advises Kara. 'A conversation with your neighbour and any documentation can help prevent any disputes.'

In the UK, the autumn and winter months have a noticeable effect on our homes and how we use them. And as our bedrooms become places to escape the cold and store thicker winter clothes, they become fuller than ever. More stuff then equates to more mould.

One of the biggest bedroom storage mistakes I see during the colder months is overfilling wardrobes and drawers. But while it’s worth decluttering clothes to prevent damp, it can be hard to edit winter clothes down to a number that works for daily life. It’s often much easier to close the doors and pretend the mess inside doesn’t exist. These clothes then become silent moisture absorbers.

Thankfully, you don’t have to get rid of all your clothes to keep your bedroom (and your clothes) tidy and moisture-free.

As Shannon Murphy, Professional Organiser and Founder of Simpl Living Co explains, ‘When clothes are tightly packed together inside a wardrobe - or chest of drawers - airflow is restricted, and moisture can become trapped.’ This increases humidity in an already tight space, leading to condensation, damp, and eventually mould.

The chances of this mould then spreading throughout the rest of your bedroom only increase during the condensation-filled autumn and winter months, so the best way to prevent mould in wardrobes is to increase airflow and open up the space.

In fact, Kate Dufton, Professional Organiser and Declutterer at Ace Your Space, advises, ‘You should aim to keep your wardrobe a maximum of 80% full, leaving a little breathing room between clothes.’

A quick and easy way to do this without getting rid of your clothes is to embrace a seasonal clothing swap. This works especially well if you keep your summer and winter clothes together, as rotating them seasonally can free up a huge amount of space.

You can keep your out-of-season clothes safe and moisture-free by placing them in vacuum bags like these Argos Home Pack of 10 Mixed Vacuum Storage Bags (£15 at Argos), and then storing them elsewhere - like a spare bedroom, under the bed, or in an empty suitcase up in the loft.

You can then focus on using the things people with tidy wardrobes and drawers always have to add an extra layer of organisation. This can improve airflow even more, especially if you choose drawer organisers that will turn piles of crinkled clothes into folded masterpieces and use space-saving hangers to free up more rail space.

However, where you place clothes storage also plays a key role in preventing damp and mould in a bedroom. Shannon warns, ‘A room can appear clean and organised while damp develops unnoticed behind a chest of drawers or wardrobe.’

‘Large pieces of furniture placed flush against cold external walls can restrict air circulation, leaving the wall surface colder and making condensation or mould harder to spot,’ she adds.

‘This is particularly important in bedrooms where furniture is rarely moved. Leaving a gap behind larger pieces, keeping the room ventilated and occasionally checking hidden areas can help you identify problems early.’

So, if you have fitted wardrobes or clothes storage that can’t be moved because it's too heavy, it may be worth investing in one of the best dehumidifiers to use in the bedroom. You can then keep the wardrobe doors open every now and then to increase airflow.

If there is one type of material I’m seeing in every Christmas shop this year, it’s natural, woven material - and if you’re looking to create a Nancy Meyers-esque Christmas this year, interior design experts have revealed how to embrace the trend.

Considering last year was all about going as bold as you possibly can, it is perhaps a little surprising that this year's Christmas trends have followed a more traditional route. This autumn we’ve already seen wicker lamps emerge as a surprise star, and this is now continuing into the festive season.

Woven decor is a nostalgic material that is wonderful for creating a lived-in, cosy look. Here’s how you can use it as a Christmas decorating idea.

Why are woven materials trending?

Perhaps it is Olivia Coleman’s offbeat new film, Wicker, about to hit cinemas, or simply natural materials have been a big home decor trend this year, but wicker, rattan and other woven decor have been inescapable recently. For example, the first to catch my eye was M&S’s Scallop Rattan Tree Skirt (£35), followed by the brand’s collection of rattan Christmas Tree decorations ( my favourite being the 2ft Rattan Tree, £30).

‘There’s a growing desire to create homes that feel relaxed, cosy and connected to nature – and Christmas décor is an extension of that. Natural materials such as wicker, wood and woven fibres bring texture and a sense of warmth that can sometimes be missing from more traditional, glitter-heavy decorations,’ says Jess Power, interior design blogger at MFI.

‘The rise in popularity of natural Christmas décor ties in with the wider trend for rustic, nature-inspired interiors. We want our homes to feel timeless, calming and lived-in, so natural materials like wicker and wood are an obvious choice. It makes sense that this would then carry over to festive décor.’

How to style woven material

I’d say that woven materials like rattan and wicker work best paired with stripped-back styles such as a neutral colour scheme.

‘I’d let the natural texture do most of the work and add a little bit of contrast. So on your tree you could mix woven stars or bells with deep red velvet ribbon and a few glass or brass ornaments so the wicker stands out,’ says Stuart Murray, founder of Retrovintage.

‘A large woven star can also work above a mantel or leaning on a shelf with a simple garland and warm white lights. Then I’d also recommend varying the scale too. One oversized wicker decoration will usually have more impact than covering every surface with lots of tiny woven pieces.

‘If the room already has rattan baskets or timber furniture, don’t worry about matching the exact tone. Slight differences in colour make natural materials feel much richer. I’d keep the overall arrangement fairly loose, because wicker looks best when it feels relaxed and tactile rather than arranged too perfectly.’

I don't know about you, but where I live, the overnight temperatures have plummeted recently, and that's got me thinking about ways to make my bedroom warmer and cosier this winter.

In cold weather, my windows are always one of the biggest areas of heat loss in my bedroom. However, after speaking with several window-dressing experts, I've found a clever solution.

As it turns out, 'curtain-stacking' is the bedroom curtain idea experts say we should all adopt this autumn – it's a simple trick that can make a cold sleep space feel warmer and is the ideal way to cosy-maxx your bedroom ahead of the winter season.

What is curtain-stacking?

So, what exactly is curtain-stacking? And how can it help to make a cold bedroom warmer?

'During winter, windows can be a significant source of heat loss,' explains Chloe Dacosta, design manager at Blinds2Go. 'To combat this, curtain stacking involves layering multiple blinds or curtains at the window to regulate the temperature (as well as the light) in your bedroom.'

Why does this warm things up? Because 'layered window treatments create additional barriers between the glass and the room, with pockets of air between the layers helping to slow the movement of heat,' says Chloe.

That means curtain-stacking works a little like double-glazing: it creates air layers between each 'stacked' fabric to trap heat and insulate your sleep space from the cold outside.

Plus, as Helen O’Connor, product and trend manager at 247 Blinds, shares, curtain-stacking isn't just a practical solution; it can also help your bedroom to feel visually cosier and can be a great bedroom design idea in its own right.

'Stacking multiple window dressings together is a great way to balance the aesthetics of your home, adding more depth and texture, whilst also acting as a barrier against heat loss,' explains Helen.

'Curtain-stacking is a creative way to protect your home environment while also designing a stylish interior,' Chloe agrees.

How to create a curtain stack

I'm certainly convinced that adopting curtain-stacking will help me to combat the cold winter nights ahead, but how exactly do we go about creating a window stack from scratch?

'To create a stylish curtain stack, look to layer different styles of window treatments and fabrics,' explains Chloe. And, when it comes to layering treatments, Chloe says that three is the magic number.

'For a combination that never fails, layer a roller blind behind a voile curtain and an outer curtain in a thicker fabric,' says the window dressing expert. 'Layering blinds and curtains adds visual interest, creating depth and texture at the window, while also creating a strong thermal barrier to regulate temperature.'

In addition, 'the sheer curtain can provide daytime privacy while allowing softly filtered light into the room,' explains Chloe, 'while the heavier outer curtain can be closed in the evening for extra heat retention.'

When it comes to where to buy bedroom curtains, there are plenty of options out there, but for maximum cosy-making, Chloe suggests choosing thermal blinds or curtains. 'These are designed to insulate the home and maintain temperature, making a room feel warmer and more comfortable during winter,' the design expert explains.

'For the base of your curtain stack, I’d reach for some high-performance thermal blinds,' agrees Helen. 'Thermal blinds are ideal for temperature control through the colder months, insulating your home, and preventing cool draughts from entering through your windows.'

'Adding a second layer, such as shutters or curtains, creates another wall of temperature regulation during cooler spells, whilst supporting the seasonal styling and cosiness of the room,' adds Helen. 'For this, I’d use a heavy, textured curtain.'

And don't forget that your curtain stack can be stylish as well as practical. 'I'd opt for a warming colour palette,' says Helen. 'Think coppery oranges or a deep burgundy; that will add an element of warmth to the natural light that enters the bedroom throughout the day.

'Don’t be afraid to combine different patterns and textures to create contrast,' adds Chloe. 'Or, if you’re looking for a more minimalist aesthetic, try layering different shades of the same colour – if you're not sure where to start, neutral tones are a timeless choice.'

All in all, curtain-stacking is a design solution with both practical and aesthetic benefits, and to my mind, that makes it a bit of a no-brainer for keeping my bedroom looking stylish *and* feeling snug and cosy this winter.

Once you’ve filled the basket with soil, you simply close the hinged door, lock it with the double locking clamps and start pushing the spreader to roll the basket along your lawn. It takes a bit of welly, depending on how much soil you’ve loaded, but it gets easier once you build some momentum.

What followed was a thin, even layer of lawn seeding soil distributed smoothly over our lawn. It almost looked as though the garden was dusted with fresh soil – and we barely had to level our lawn once we’d finished. From there, we used the Miracle-Gro Drop Spreader to evenly sow grass seed.

We also loved the fact that you don’t need to turn the spreader around every time you complete a lap of your lawn – you just flip the handle to the other side of the roller, wiggle it slightly, and carry on in the opposite direction of your last lap.

The Outsunny Compost Spreader needs to be assembled before you use it, but it was easy enough to put together – a few clips, pins and bolts, and we’d attached the U-shaped handle to the cage. It’s also made from rust-proof, corrosion-resistant metal, so it’ll withstand the elements during the colder months. The only downside is that the basket collects larger pieces of bark and debris, so you'll need to empty it between refills.

I think I have reached the level of maturity where I have come to realise that the things we use on a daily basis deserve far more consideration than those we bring out occasionally, such as fancy guest towels and decorative centrepieces reserved for special gatherings. Don’t get me wrong, I love a seasonal refresh as much as anyone, but over time, I’ve come to appreciate the value of investing in good-quality everyday essentials rather than spending hundreds on things that barely make it out of the cupboard.

In my house, it’s the sofa, cushions, duvets and pillows that rarely get a moment's peace. Our two cats are fully convinced that everything belongs to them and we are merely borrowing it. I must admit, though, there was once a time when I’d buy a cushion purely on the basis of colour or pattern, and would give almost no thought to what the insert was like. You live and learn that what goes inside a cushion plays a key role in making furnishings look expensive and considered. And once I upgraded to feather-filled inserts, there was no going back. As for the pillows, I’ve always been fairly fussy. Anyone who has spent ages trying to find THE pillow will know it's no easy task.Which brings me to today's chat.

Not long ago, I shared a photograph of my soft furnishings enjoying a sunbathing session in our garden. It intrigued quite a few of my Instagram followers, and many were left wondering what on earth I was doing.

Well, the explanation is pretty simple. In fact, it is a habit I mentioned in my earlier article where I shared easy housekeeping tips I learnt from my mother. I was sunning my soft furnishings, something I grew up watching my mother do.I’ve always been an advocate of old-fashioned housekeeping hacks, particularly those that involve fewer cleaning chemicals. And if they involve a simpler practical solution, I am definitely in.

How I freshen my soft furnishings

As I mentioned earlier, with two Ragdolls, finding hair in almost every corner of my home is inevitable. The other day, I found one in my make-up bag, of all places. There’s always fur hiding somewhere and if anything is made out of velvet, then it doesn’t stand a chance against their shedding. A lint roller, pet hair remover, or any soft upholstery brush normally does the job. I always stock up on a few of these BÄSTIS lint rollers from IKEA because they are quite effective in removing any dust and fur. The next step is to take a quick look at the fabric care instructions. It’s always good to know what materials we are dealing with and if there are any specific precautions that we need to take.

Of course, I do this on a dry, sunny day. I arrange the cushions on a clean sheet in our backyard. You can also use a garden bench, clothes airer or other outdoor furniture. Just make sure the surface is clean and dry. For duvet covers, I find it easier to hang them on a washing line. The important thing is to leave enough space around each item for the air to circulate. This step is entirely optional, but sometimes I spray them lightly with a suitable fabric deodoriser. The key here is to spritz gently from a distance, making sure not to saturate the fabric.

Then, I just let them sit in the sun, soaking up all the goodness. I flip them halfway through before leaving them outside for some time so both sides get a chance to air. Depending on the manufacturer's care instructions, I leave them outside for four to five hours. Once they’ve had a good session in the sun, I give them a good shake and fluff them up to redistribute the filling before bringing them back inside. And that’s it. It really is that simple. I leave them outside to air in the sunshine, and nature does the rest.

Why it works

When you bring them inside, that fresh, outdoorsy feeling is hard to ignore. Pillows, duvets and cushions naturally absorb moisture from our bodies and their surroundings. Airing them in dry conditions helps some of that trapped moisture evaporate, reducing lingering odours and the stuffiness that can develop in the fillings over time.

Fun fact: Sunlight actually has antimicrobial properties, which can help reduce certain microorganisms that may be present in fabrics. The combination of warmth, sunshine and fresh air works as a natural way to dehumidify and freshen up soft furnishings.

Buying good-quality items is one part of looking after our homes, but learning how to care for them is equally important. I guess sometimes we end up inheriting much more from our parents than just their genes.

Jamie Oliver is back – this time with a new book (and an accompanying TV show!) with a simple aim: showing you how to cook balanced, tasty meals at home in 20 minutes flat.

And if you thought that the famed British chef's foray into the world of the best air fryers last year with his book Easy Air Fryer (£13 via Amazon) was a flash in the pan, then think again. He's been turning to his trusty air fryer in his new book to cut down cooking times, proving that one of these ultra-convenient appliances is the way to go in the long term if you're time-poor but committed to eating well.

Here's how he's been using his air fryer (and pressure cooker too!) to get his meals under that all-important 20 minute mark.

The star recipe I've found so far in the new book is Jamie's 'Air Fryer Arancini' which, in Jamie's words, relies heavily on getting the cooking process going as quickly as possible. For this, there's no better appliance for Jamie to call on than that of his trusty air fryer. That's no surprise given how much faster they are to preheat, as well as cook in general, versus a standard oven.

The air fryer that Jamie used in his TV show, the Tefal Easy Fry Dual Air Fryer & Grill (£147.99 via Amazon), is one that we've tested here at Ideal Home. And one of the things our expert Home Economist liked most about it during her review was that it didn't even need a preheat setting to beat her oven on cooking times.

In the recipe, which also features helpings of courgette, the speedy cooking time is achieved thanks to the arancini spending just 15 minutes in the air fryer which is significantly less than the usual baking time in an oven.

As well as using an air fryer to cut down cooking times, Jamie also employs the use of a pressure cooker to whip up a bolognese in under twenty minutes. The pressurised element of something like an Instant Pot can often make people anxious to use them but just like an air fryer, they're a genius buy if you're all about cutting down on food prep time.

In the recipe Jamie uses his pressure cooker on high heat to cook his mince and veg in 10 minutes flat, leaving him plenty of time to get on with other parts of the meal unobstructed. When our reviewer Helen tried the Instant Pot Pro (which is rated as the best multicooker in our guide) she also used the high pressure setting to cook a lentil curry in quick time, proving how handy these appliances are for cutting down the actual time of cooking.

You’ve probably been keeping up to date with Michael Sheen via his stint on the hit BBC show Celebrity Traitors, but I’ve also taken the opportunity to have a nosey around his social media for home decor tidbits, and I have to say his kitchen storage ideas are impressive.

If you’ve been wondering how to style a display cabinet, Michael's is a great example of how vintage storage solutions can blend seamlessly into a modern home, and how good storage can make your kitchen look more expensive.

In a snap celebrating Mother’s Day on Instagram, what immediately jumped out to the Ideal Home team was Michael’s gorgeous arched wood display cabinets at the back of the room. I was immediately reminded of Anthropology’s cult Fern Ash Wood Marble Top Storage Cabinet (£2,498) or the more affordable Habitat Collins Arched 4 Door Display Cabinet (£370). Although I must note that Michaels is most likely vintage.

While these types of display cabinets have typically been associated with the kitchen ideas of our grandparents, nostalgic decor has been having a major comeback across the interiors world for the past few years. Not to mention, curved display cabinets are an excellent way to add some architectural interest to a kitchen - especially if you’re a renter.

‘There’s a real misconception that all traditional furniture looks dated, but this isn’t the case at all. Michael Sheen's display cabinet is a perfect example of this. It’s got all the elements of a traditional cabinet, but with a few modern twists,’ comments Chloe Barrow, head of creative Interiors at Laura James.

‘Right now curved furniture is trending everywhere. We’re seeing it in sofas, coffee tables, and even architecturally in doorways. The way Sheen’s cabinet curves adds a brilliant modern design element to an otherwise traditional piece. Simultaneously, the wooden framing is classic. It’s a great fit for a country home or for anyone who loves the ever-popular farmhouse style, and it's definitely making its comeback.’

And Michael’s cabinet in particular works because it helps soften his kitchen-dining space, adding depth and drawing in the eye.

‘I love the arched top; it gives the cabinet an almost architectural presence, like a built-in alcove, and softens all the straight lines in the room. I also like the rich, warm wood tone against the light, neutral walls - it anchors that corner of the room and adds depth. It’s also the right size for where it is; big enough not to be engulfed in the space and still be a statement piece, but it doesn’t project out and dominate the room,’ says Laura Rich, interior designer at Furniturebox.

‘It’s classic and antique-looking, and being used to display glasses, it will reflect the light beautifully.’

How to style a glass display cabinet

An important thing to note about a glass display cabinet is that its inside will be on show (unless you opt for fluted glass), so it’s important that you keep it organised. Luckily, there are many ways to organise a kitchen cupboard - even if it is one you’ll have on display.

‘Styling them properly is key, otherwise you’ll end up with chaotic cabinets on show for all your guests. I always recommend using the rule of three. For example, you might want to pop a tall wine bottle at the back and have two spirit bottles in front of various lower heights. This is going to be really pleasing to the eye, instead of shoving everything in wherever it fits as you might normally,’ says Chloe.

Laura agrees, pointing out that an open display cabinet should also be used to display items you actually want on show. In Michaels’s case this is his glassware, which works perfectly in the context of a kitchen.

‘I prefer glass-fronted cabinets to store things that I’d be happy to have on show in the house - like Michael Sheen’s glasses. It’s then aesthetic and practical, keeping things dust-free and organised, but it also turns everyday objects into something worth looking at,’ she says.

‘Glassware, bar bottles, ceramics or inherited trinkets belong in a glass-fronted cabinet. The items need to be considered to ensure the cabinet becomes a curated display. Don’t cram everything in together, though, leave a bit of breathing space on each shelf, group items by colour or height, and mix the practical with a few personal pieces.’

Over the last 2 years of living in my rental home, I have become somewhat accustomed to all of the things I swore I could fix when I first moved in. When I first set sights on my very beige bathroom, I was committed to making some renter-friendly upgrades, but as everyday life inevitably gets in the way, I never did.

So when I spotted these renter-friendly, peel-and-stick floor tiles from Dunelm, it gave me the push I needed to finally do something about my sad bathroom. As we get into the winter months, I want my bathroom to feel like a cosy space to unwind in - not one where all I can focus on is the dirty grout.

I've been curious about adhesive tiles for a while now, but I have always been concerned that they would look cheap. In my opinion, this isn't the case with these Dunelm tiles at all. Here's how I used them to achieve a budget bathroom makeover in just a few hours.

When it comes to interiors, it's safe to say that I am someone who enjoys compiling inspiration across many Pinterest boards, but I am less enthusiastic about executing these grand ideas. In other words, I put this DIY project off for a while, and I completely regret not trying it sooner.

Having never laid any tiles before, adhesive or not, I decided to tackle the task with a gung-ho attitude - and I now have some lessons learned that will help anyone else trying to do the same.

The first hurdle was figuring out how many tiles I needed for the project. The Dunelm tiles come in a pack of 10, each measuring 30cm x 30cm, so I put these details plus my bathroom floorplan into AI to help me calculate how many packets to purchase.

I definitely came out with more tiles than I needed, but it has been useful to have extra for small, awkward gaps. Overall, I used 6 boxes which comes to £86.40 - not bad for a tweak that makes a big impact.

The only tools you need for this are a utility knife and a large ruler (the bigger the better). I started by measuring across the back wall of my bathroom to find the mid point, then I stuck the first tile down in the centre of the room, with the aim of working outwards.

This was an adequate strategy, but the advice on the tile box recommends working in quadrants, which I would recommend as this minimises how many cuts you need to do.

After finding some photos as inspiration, I decided to lay the tiles in a diamond checkerboard pattern, working in an alternate black and white pattern. The middle tiles went down really easily and I was soon well on my way to filling the centre of the room.

I quickly came up against some tricky edges, which is where my utility knife came into play. The adhesive tiles were easy to cut down - I used the ruler to measure and then scored with the utility knife. You could then easily snap the excess off.

However, this is where I made some mistakes with measurements. At the side of the room, some cuts were made too big so you could see the original tiles peeking through.

After a few mishaps, I started using the paper backing from the tiles to create stencils, which I then used to score around on the tile. This was a much easier method which I took across the rest of the project.

With a few breaks in between, this took me around 4 hours to complete, which isn't bad for a weekend DIY task.

I am super chuffed with how they look. It's brightened up the whole space and feels like a much cleaner and stylish space.

The marble effect on the tiles looks much more realistic than I had anticipated and they feel very tile-like underfoot, which was important to me. The dirty grout lines are officially covered up, and I now actually look forward to doing my skincare.

In our busy household and as a family of four, we get through a fair bit of washing, so when we renovated the back of our house, I wanted to make sure our small laundry room worked as hard as possible because there wasn't much space to work with.

So despite its size, I've managed to squeeze in everything from laundry baskets to my vacuum cleaner, ironing board and cleaning essentials. The secret has been investing in a few clever clutter busters that make the most of every inch and keep everything neat and tidy and out of sight.

1. Individual pull out baskets

This is by far one of my favourite additions to our laundry room space. Rather than having our copious amounts of laundry baskets inevitably cluttering up our floor, we installed a dedicated cupboard that houses four baskets, one for each family member.

It's made sorting the laundry and putting it away so much easier, particularly with two young children and their endless array of tiny garments. I bought these Urbnliving oval laundry baskets from Amazon that fit perfectly into the slots.

2. A pull out shelf for catching laundry

I spotted this clever pull-out shelf idea on Pinterest, and I made sure it fit our design. It gives me somewhere to pull all the freshly dried clothes from our tumble dryer into a basket and also sort and fold clothes. Once I'm finished, it simply slides back into the cupboard, taking no space at all.

It also houses this HoldAll collapsible laundry basket from Joseph Joseph, which folds completely flat when not in use, so it can be tucked in on the shelf when it's hidden away and pops open in seconds when you need it. It's sturdy, easy to carry, has a large capacity and wipes clean.

3. A slim detergent cupboard

Our laundry room needed to work for cleaning storage as well as housing laundry essentials, so things like bathroom sprays, multi-surface cleaners and floor cleaner needed a home, as well as washing liquid, stain removers and fabric conditioners.

I've added a slim pull-out cupboard to store all my laundry kit so it's easily reachable from the washing machine, etc., so the rest of the cupboards keep everything else hidden.

4. A cupboard for bulky cleaning equipment

Finding somewhere to store a vacuum cleaner, an ironing board, an iron and a mop can be tricky, especially if you have a small space to work with.

We made sure we had a decent-sized cupboard, and that's been a game changer for keeping everything in its right place, so I no longer have to look at any of it!

5. A retractable washing line

I'm a big fan of anything that doesn't take up permanent space, which is why I love this viral brass retractable washing line that I picked up last year.

It's a great little buy that's ideal for hanging shirts and smaller items to dry, especially in winter. It just disappears into a pretty little brass unit when not in use.

6. A big laundry basket with built-in sorting

Another laundry essential and one of my many Joseph Joseph buys is the Joseph Joseph Tota Trio laundry basket. Its three genius compartments mean I can sort clothes into different loads as I go, rather than tackling one enormous pile.

The removable bags make transferring everything to the washing machine easier as well. Plus, it's not something you need to hide away, as it's super easy on the eye and doesn't take up too much space.

If you're planning a small laundry room, my advice would be to think about how you actually do your washing before deciding on storage.

Making wildlife-friendly choices for your garden is one of the best ways to create a sustainable, flourishing outdoor space, and experts have told Ideal Home that choosing native hedging offers many benefits for your garden and the wildlife that visits.

Wildlife gardens and outdoor spaces focused on sustainable practices have been major garden trends for 2026. From planting bird-feeding plants to introducing a micropond for insects and frogs, we’ve seen plenty of popular methods for channelling these trends.

But rather than adding a few wildlife-friendly features, experts want you to consider every area of your garden, particularly the structural foundation that is your hedge.

Why should you choose native hedging?

When referring to ‘native hedging ’, I mean hedging materials that are native to the UK, such as hawthorn or hazel. These types of hedges are largely considered some of the best hedging plants, as not only are they well-suited to the UK’s climate, but they often shelter and feed wildlife, too.

‘Hedges of all sorts are proven to reduce air pollution in urban areas. They trap larger particulates, which are then washed away. Of course, they also absorb CO2 – a clever trick for a fence! They also help prevent flooding; their root systems improve soil health and its ability to hold volumes of water,’ comments Nick Mann, environmentalist and founder of Somerset B Corp Habitat Aid.

‘Something you might have noticed after last summer is that well-established and managed hedges provide deep shade and cooler spaces for wildlife. For many animal species, the temperatures we’re now seeing in summer are life-threatening. Hedges also provide protected corridors for movement for these animals. One of the problems they have is that habitats are so fragmented; hedges can join them up.

‘Native hedges in particular are fantastic for wildlife. They’re like a super diverse thicket on the edge of woodland - a different habitat than elsewhere in the garden. Blossom, nuts, berries, food plants for moth and butterfly larvae, ideal for small nesting birds and hibernating amphibia. You can forage sloes, haws, berries, and nuts too, of course, or damsons, bullace, pears and crab apples.’

As Nick mentions, your hedging also provides a corridor for wildlife. You may already be aware of the benefits of a hedgehog highway, which allows hedgehogs to pass freely between gardens, keeping them off the road. Not to mention that native hedging also makes up many of the plants you can plant in October to help birds survive winter.

Which hedging should you choose?

If you’re looking to lay a hedge in your garden, hawthorn (£94.99, B&Q) is one of the best choices for you and the wildlife that visits your garden.

‘Dense, thorny hedges like hawthorn provide birds with a secure place to build a nest where they will be safe from predators. The leaf litter produced by hedges is also a great source of shelter for wildlife, as it can offer a safe overwintering place for insects or small animals. Hedges act as natural windbreaks, lowering the wind speed and creating a safe sheltering area for fragile insects like butterflies,’ says Richard Barker, horticultural expert and commercial director of LBS Horticulture.

Hawthorn is also fast-growing, making it a good choice if you’re looking to establish your plant quickly. Holly (£10.99, B&Q) and hazel (£5.99, Hedging Direct) are also solid choices, with holly providing year-round cover and hazel producing nuts and berries.

‘We recommend a well-managed mixed native hedge. Avoid Blackthorn for a garden hedge, as it suckers so aggressively, but mix other native hedge species in small groups,’ recommends Nick.

‘Most native hedge mixes are based on Hawthorn, which has a number of virtues. It’s fast-growing, spiky and will be covered in blossom in April/May and decorative red haws in autumn. Like all native hedge species, it’s fantastic for wildlife.

‘Other plants bring their own attractions. Myrobalan for early blossom, Dogwood for autumn colour. Buckthorn as a food plant for Brimstone butterflies, Honeysuckle for Hawk moths.’

How to lay native hedging

If you do choose a native hedge for your garden, our experts also recommend using traditional hedging laying practices to install it.

‘Traditional hedge laying can help to create a dense fence that can last for years if cared for correctly. Using this technique also prevents hedging shrubs from turning into a line of trees with open gaps at the bottom, with the lower thicket providing additional cover for wildlife,’ explains Richard..

‘If you are attempting to lay a hedge yourself it is best to try doing so on a small section first, and only do so during the dormant season (between October and March). You should also only attempt to lay hedges that have a few years of growth, as this ensures that the stems are thick and high enough to work with. However, if you lack experience, are dealing with a complex hedge or need a long-lasting barrier, it is better to hire a professional.’

However, if you’re not confident in your ability, it is always best to speak to a trusted professional for advice.
