Upholstered headboards are a timeless interior design choice, yet there’s no denying 2026 has truly been their moment to shine. And the latest offering to catch our attention is the Habitat x Morris & Co Hyacinth Double Headboard, which, at £200, is one of the most affordable headboards I’ve seen that will give your bed a timeless, designer look.

Having now worked at Ideal Home for more than two years, September is eagerly marked in my calendar as the arrival time of the Habitat x Morris & Co autumn collection. And the one thing this collaboration does consistently well is nail (and sometimes help set) the biggest bedroom trends.

The 2026 Habitat version has been reimagined slightly bolder. Set against a navy backdrop, it features bolder reds, greens and blues whilst retaining the romantic charm of the original.

If this Hyacinth headboard is too bold for you, consider the Habitat x William Morris Apple Double Headboard - Cream (£200). This intricate floral and fruit print is stunningly sophisticated, in a soft green and cream colourway.

This headboard is inspired by the Apple wallpaper, which was designed by William Morris in 1877. The pattern combines apples and acanthus leaves against a backdrop of foliage. While the original has a small splatter of orange hues, the Habitat version lacks it. However, I do prefer this take if you’re looking to create a more relaxing sleep space.

I know we’re only at the end of September, but I have just spotted the bedding set that is going to see me through the winter months: Next’s Sateen Robins Christmas Duvet Cover and Pillowcase (from £55).

While I am tired of the bow trend, I do think this makes for a striking and thoughtful finishing touch.

The robins themselves can be spotted in pairs or individually nestled amongst branches of festive mistletoe. If you’re a fan of attracting robins to your garden (and honestly, who isn’t?)This is a lovely way to continue the charm into your bedroom. Given that the set is largely white, the set isn’t too loud either.

Christmas has definitely landed early at Next. But this robin bedding set has convinced me to welcome the festive season early to my bedroom, too.

Relaxation is the name of the game in the bedroom, but when it comes to decor choices, this can be easier said than done.

Get the details wrong, and your bedroom design ideas can easily become stress-inducing instead of the soothing sanctuary we all want to achieve.

Luckily, the experts are on hand to help. I asked interior designers about the key things that all relaxing bedrooms share in common, and this is what they said.

'A truly relaxing bedroom always comes down to a few key ingredients,' shares Lara Clarke, interior designer and founder of Lara Clarke Interiors. These are the five design tricks to have up your sleeve.

1. A warm, soft colour palette

'Every relaxing bedroom starts with a warm, soft colour palette,' says Katerina Tchevytchalova, founder of interior design studio K'Arte Design. 'Stark white or cool grey walls can feel clinical rather than restorative, so I always lean towards warm neutrals or gentle, nature-led tones that help the room feel cocooning.'

'Warmer, softer neutrals or muted tones tend to feel far more cocooning than anything stark or clinical,' agrees Lara.

Think bedroom colour of the moment: 'peige', or maybe a nature-inspired sage green or some of its calming alternatives.

2. Layered lighting

So soft, warm wall colours are important in a relaxing bedroom scheme, but so is soft warm lighting, and, as our interior experts explain, the trick is to layer your light sources.

'Layered lighting is important in a bedroom,' says Katerina. 'A single overhead light will never create the right atmosphere, so I'd always add table lamps or wall lights alongside dimmable options, ideally at a warm colour temperature, so the room can be softened in the evening.'

'Layered lighting is essential,' agrees Lara, 'you never want to rely on one overhead light. A bedside lamp, a dimmer, or even a wall light creates a softer, more considered atmosphere in the evening.'

3. Texture

According to our interior experts, texture also plays a big role in creating a relaxing bedroom to retreat to.

'Texture under your feet and at the window makes a huge difference,' says Lara. 'A rug adds warmth and comfort first thing in the morning, and full-height curtains or soft blinds soften the architecture of the room.'

Texture plays a huge role,' agrees Katerina. 'Natural materials like linen, wool and timber, paired with layered textiles such as a soft throw or a well-placed rug, all add to that sense of comfort underfoot and around the room.'

'Natural materials, whether that's oak, linen or wool, bring a tactile, grounded quality that makes a room feel genuinely restful rather than just styled to look that way,' confirms Lara.

4. Storage, storage, and more storage

'Storage is another big one,' shares Lara. As we all know, 'a cluttered bedroom is never a restful one, so built-in joinery or a well-planned wardrobe keeps everyday mess out of sight and the room feeling calm.'

Another option, which is especially useful if you're working with small bedroom ideas, is to incorporate hidden storage into every piece of furniture you add to the room. Think bedside tables with drawers, clever storage cabinets, and even an ottoman bed with storage under the mattress.

5. Less is more

And last but not least, Katerina says to bear in mind restraint. 'A relaxing bedroom isn't overly decorated or cluttered,' says the interior designer. 'Give the space room to breathe and only keep what genuinely needs to be there.'

So pare things back, keep your decor simple and spacious, banish the clutter, and make your bedroom into a space where you have a chance to catch your breath and breathe deeply.

By now, there’s no way you haven’t spotted deer print quietly entrenching itself in both the fashion and interiors world this year. And I’m not about to complain, as Next’s Natural Deer Dapple Faux Fur Duvet Cover and Pillowcase Set (from £50) has to be the cosiest example of how to do this trend well I’ve seen - I can’t wait to put it on my bed this winter.

Perhaps one of the more surprising home decor trends, and subsequently now a bedding trend of 2026, delicate deer print has been everywhere of late, even taking favour over cult animal prints like leopard and zebra.

But I don’t think I’ve seen this trendy print used better than as a cosy bedding set. If you’re excited for snuggling down during the colder months, this is the statement bedding set to get your hands on now.

Right now, deer print is very much centred in the fashion sphere. But as with any clothing trend, it is starting to trickle through into home decor. Most recently, Dunelm dropped a deer print fabric floor lamp, which proved a bold and playful way to embrace the trend. However, I’d argue that it fares far better as a bedding idea.

Deer print is trending because it is a gentler interpretation of the classic animal print trend. It uses a softer colour palette than leopard print, and the pattern is less defined. Because of this, I’d say deer print is better suited to your sleep space (although I do also love this funky leopard print bedding set, also from Next).

Next’s deer dapple duvet set combines a warm, white shade and a tawny brown to create a delightfully warm deer print. Its faux fur material only adds to the overall cosy look, and I do not doubt that it would be a godsend on cold winter nights. Next says this set will turn your bedroom into a ‘cosy sanctuary ’, stating the faux fur material feels incredibly soft to the touch.

I’m no stranger to fluffy bedding - I whip out Dunelm’s Teddy Duvet Cover and Pillowcase Set in cream (£20) every winter - and it genuinely is the one thing I introduce in winter that makes my bedroom feel miles cosier. However, I have noticed that Next’s deer print set is made from 100% polyester, and if you’re looking to avoid synthetic materials, I’d opt for brushed cotton bedding.

If you’re looking for funky, on-trend designs, Next is definitely one of the best places to buy bedding. Their faux fur deer print set went straight to my wishlist as soon as I spotted it, and subsequently had me checking out the rest of Next’s cosy bedding sets. Here are three more stylish designs I spotted.

I put the Dunelm Coverless Duvet to the test to see how it compared to some of the best duvets on the market.

In a nutshell

Dunelm's coverless duvet is one of the most affordable coverless options on the market, and has just been launched in two stylish looks - the striped version I tested, and a gingham check option.

A double costs £40, which is a lot cheaper than one of the most well-known branded coverless duvet makers on the market: Night Lark, whose most affordable double coverless duvet costs £75.

And I was impressed by this budget-friendly option. I found its all-in-one printed design felt less plasticky than the Night Lark Coverless Duvet I recently tested, although there are fewer style options available, and fewer warmth options. The Dunelm option comes in a 10.5 tog only, but it's a useful year-round tog.

Plus, I found the king-size Dunelm Coverless Duvet I tested was easier to bung straight in my normal washing machine (which is the main point of a coverless duvet after all). In contrast, the larger sizes of Night Lark's duvet are recommended for a large-capacity washing machine only. My Dunelm duvet also dried outside on the line in around two hours on a mild autumn day.

Overall, I think this is a great affordable option if you're considering giving a coverless duvet a whirl; I did find its polyester fill lacked breathability and made me a little too warm on hot nights, but if you want an easy to care for duvet, that could be a price worth paying.

Feel

The Dunelm duvet comes in a drawstring bag with the same pattern as the duvet. This is super handy if you’re storing this duvet away – especially because you can tell what’s inside the bag without having to unpack it.

The duvet is made from 100 per cent polyester. As a sleep-product reviewer, I'm super fussy about what goes on my bed. So I was a bit dubious about how nice a 100 per cent polyester duvet would feel to sleep under. (Yes, my job has made a sleep snob out of me). Sometimes man-made-textile duvets can feel slippery like a sleeping bag, but not this coverless duvet.

If I were doing a blind test, I’d guess it’s made from cotton. When I slept underneath it, I preferred this because it didn’t feel like it was constantly slipping off and I was having to clutch on to it as I slept. I definitely found it less plasticky than the Night Lark coverless duvet I previously tested.

I usually sleep with a (far more expensive) scooms Hungarian Goose Down Duvet, which is super marshmallowy. The loft on the Dunelm coverless duvet is pretty thin in comparison, and it feels pretty lightweight too. This is probably on par with the Night Lark coverless duvet.

Temperature regulation

Temperature regulation is a real bugbear of mine when I’m asleep. I overheat easily, and man-made fibres often exacerbate the issue because they lack breathability and can result in me feeling like a sticky mess. When weighing up feather and down vs synthetic duvets, polyester duvets are generally less breathable as they let less air flow through than other duvets.

So I was keen to see how the Dunelm coverless duvet fared at keeping me cool. I tested the duvet during early autumn, which gave me a good mix of warm and slightly cooler evenings. At 10.5 togs, this duvet would probably be too hot for very warm summer nights.

I found I was warm as soon as I slid under the Dunelm coverless duvet. It’s quite lightweight, so it didn’t drape too snugly to me. This allowed air to flow and kept me cooler. Any heavier and I think this duvet would have felt very hot.

While the Dunelm coverless duvet is nowhere near as temperature-regulating as my feather and down duvet, nor a wool duvet (my spare room has the wool-filled Woolroom Deluxe Wool Washable Duvet on the bed, which we rate as one of the best duvets for hot sleepers), I did find it on a par with the similarly synthetic Night Lark coverless duvet in this area. It was warm for sure, but not too sweaty.

Ease of care

Coverless duvets are appealing if you want something that’s easy to clean if you often need to wash a duvet. As a parent, I see that having a duvet you can just pull off, stick in the wash, and stick another one on in the middle of the night – so long as you have one to use, one to wash.

What I think coverless duvets are particularly great for is camping, spare rooms and kids’ beds – they’re great for nighttime accidents. This is because you can bung the whole duvet straight in the washing machine, and that's where Dunelm's coverless option trumped the Night Lark’s coverless duvet I'd recently tested.

With the Night Lark duvet, the king size had to be washed in a large-capacity washing machine. However, the Dunelm coverless duvet has no such recommendations so you can stick it in the washing machine at 40ºC. While line drying is recommended on the label, you can also tumble dry it on low.

I dried it on a warm September day on the line, and it took about two hours to dry. If you’re storing your duvet away, it’s really important that the duvet is absolutely bone dry to prevent it from going mouldy.

While it doesn’t pack down super small if you’re a hardcore hike-and-camp type, it’s ideal for campsites and campervans where you can cram all your stuff into your car. It’s also great for student bedrooms as you can quickly and easily give your room a refresh by wholesale washing your duvet.

Sleep trial

There's no sleep trial available on Dunelm's bedding, which does mean there's no option to test this option out before you commit to keeping it.

However, that's the case with every coverless duvet I've come across, and Dunelm's option is at least one of the most budget-friendly on the market, so it's less of an investment if you're on the fence about whether a coverless duvet will work for your needs.

Value for money

Any king-size duvet that's only £45 is impressive value for money, and this Dunelm coverless duvet is no exception. Especially if you consider you don’t have to buy a duvet cover. It’s just £35 for a single and £40 for a double, and it also comes with matching pillowcases, which pleasantly surprised me for the price.

I also liked that this was a double-sided duvet cover. One side has stripes, and the other a solid colour. While I went for taupe stripes, Dunelm also sells a stylish blue gingham coverless duvet if you want something more vibrant.

Conversely, the most affordable Night Lark coverless duvet starts at £45 for a single, and £85 for the king-size. Admittedly, Night Lark has a lot more style options to choose from, but if you're happy with stripes or gingham checks, I think the Dunelm coverless duvet is very competitive on price.

How I tested

I spent two weeks testing the Dunelm coverless duvet during a period of mild weather in early autumn. I slept on the job, testing it while asleep next to my husband – who is also a very hot sleeper and extremely vocal about what duvet he will and won’t sleep under.

While testing, I considered the look, feel, and quality of the duvet, how it draped across me while I slept, how quickly I warmed up underneath it, and if I overheated at all.

Along with my own experience, I used an Oura Ring 4 as a sleep tracker, which gives me all the stats about my sleep I could want or need. This helped to detect every disturbance and how restful my sleep was.

I also factored in how easy this duvet is to care for, and, of course, value for money is always part of the duvet testing process at Ideal Home. I compared this duvet to similar options on the market and considered how its performance compares to its price point.

Who doesn’t love a bit of celebrity storage inspo to get you in the mood for decluttering? Well, the latest to catch my eye is TV chef Clodagh McKenna, who’s added a mirror to her built-in bedroom storage, and it’s proved to be a clever design trick for making the space look bigger and brighter.

Integrated wardrobes and drawers are at the top of my bedroom storage ideas, or should I say wishlist. Ensuring all your clothes and accessories have a home, without looking too bulky or taking up too much space.

Having said that, Clodagh’s immense amount of built-in storage had the potential to dominate the room, and this is why the mirror is so clever. Not only does it make the room look bigger, but it breaks up the wall of storage for a considered, luxe look - making it a great example to follow, especially in small bedrooms.

I’ve used Clodagh McKenna’s home as a source of inspiration for some time now. From her use of dried lavender in her kitchen to her gorgeous garden pub, her wonderful rustic style is both cosy and homely, making it a perfect autumnal example to follow.

And her bedroom storage, which is of course painted in her signature green colourway, is proof that you can opt for both style and practicality.

‘Building a dressing-table zone or additional storage into the wardrobe run is one of the best moves you can make in a bedroom. It treats the wardrobe as a room rather than a wall, and the freestanding dressing table that usually clutters the room disappears entirely,’ says Philipp Nagel, director of Neatsmith.

‘The mirror is framed in the same shaker beading as the doors, so it reads as part of the cabinetry rather than as an addition. Warm LED’s make more difference than people expect. The advice for anyone planning something similar is simple: design this space first and the wardrobe around it, not the other way around.’

What Clodagh has done well is position her mirror to break up what would otherwise be a block wall of storage. The mirror, in turn, makes the room feel brighter and look bigger, compensating for the large amount of storage on offer, which could have looked clunky otherwise.

‘Integrating a mirror into the cabinetry gives the storage a more considered, bespoke feel. For me, luxury in a bedroom comes from balancing that polished finish with warmth and texture. At Reclaim Nation, we love the character reclaimed wood brings - it’s a lovely way to make a room feel inviting and individual,’ says Mark Ward, founder of sustainable furniture retailer Reclaim Nation.

‘It gives you a useful dressing mirror without taking up extra wall or floor space, which is particularly helpful in smaller bedrooms. I’d always consider what it reflects, though – a window or an attractive corner will do much more for the room than a cluttered surface.’

And to achieve the look yourself? Mark says to work with what you’ve got.

‘Repainting existing wardrobes and updating the handles can make a big difference. A generously sized framed mirror nearby can give a similar sense of light and depth without the cost of bespoke work. Finish with soft bedding and a reclaimed or second-hand wooden bedside table to bring in some warmth and character,’ he says.

Clodagh has me seriously inspired to declutter and tidy my own sleep space. These are the storage essentials I swear by, and the things people with tidy bedrooms always have.

‘We recommend incorporating mirrors onto the back panels of the wardrobe along with LED’s as a great way to bounce light around the wardrobe and lift the space. To maximise storage, use all available height and make the most of corners to allow easy access to all parts of the room while creating extra storage space at the same time,’ concludes Philipp.

If you’re looking for ways to upgrade your bedroom storage this autumn, Clodagh’s is a great example to follow if you don’t want to lose a sense of space - in fact, her trick does the opposite, making her bedroom look bigger.

Over the past week, I’ve very happily gorged on the latest designs to make their way into the now-iconic Habitat x Morris & Co collaboration - and the one piece I can’t stop thinking about is the Habitat x Morris & Co. Hyacinth Quilted Bedspread (£60)

Last week, the Habitat x Morris & Co. collection for AW26 dropped, and there has been no shortage of future classics landing in store and online. But one thing this collaboration always nails is their bedding.

I’d argue the Habitat x Morris & Co. bedding drops are some of the most beautiful bedding designs I’ve seen, and now, hopping on the latest bedspread trend, the Hyacinth Quilted Bedspread is the must-have autumn bedroom accessory.

If you ask me, Habitat is one of the best places to shop Morris & Co. designs, and this latest example does the iconic Arts and Crafts designer justice, not to mention nails one of the biggest bedding trends of the year - the return of the bedspread.

‘Bedspreads fit perfectly with the move towards bedrooms that feel softer, more layered and more considered. We’ve seen a real appetite for interiors that feel comfortable and lived-in rather than overly styled, and a bedspread is a very easy way to bring that look into a bedroom,’ says Expert Comment from Gareth Coxall, Creative Director at Terrys Fabrics.

‘They also tap into the growing popularity of nostalgic, traditional decorating. Quilted finishes, florals and textured fabrics can introduce that slightly vintage feel without having to completely redecorate.’

Amy Lockwood, Ideal Home’s Sleep Editor, agrees, pointing out she’s seen this trend everywhere this year.

'One of this year's biggest bedding trends is heirloom-style bedding, and this Habitat x Morris & Co. bedspread sums up the look perfectly. I've seen statement quilts at all the big retailers this autumn, from John Lewis' contemporary take on the classic patchwork quilt to Pottery Barn's trad-look quilted bedspread collection. However, Habitat just nailed this on-trend look for a lot less money,’ she says.

It’s true, John Lewis’s quilts - such as the gorgeous Diamond Patchwork Quilt - retail for £200, while Habitat and Morris & Co’s Hyacinth Bedspread is a far more affordable £60. Yet it still delivers a high-end look.

The Hyacinth bedspread consists of two Morris & Co. prints. The first is Hyacinth, which was designed between 1900 and 1912 by John Henry Dearle, and the second is Woodland Weeds, which was first printed in 1905 by John Henry Dearle.

The bedspread itself is made from 100% cotton and is machine washable for ease of use. Despite its autumnal look, it can be used all year round, adding extra warmth in winter and even replacing your duvet in spring and summer when it gets too warm.

Luckily, when it comes to small bedroom ideas, the professionals have plenty of spacemaxxing tricks up their sleeves. From ditching the bedside tables in favour of space-saving alternatives to window-dressing tricks that make a small bedroom look bigger, interior designers are an endless source of clever design solutions.

There's also a simple furniture trick that interior designers use to make a small bedroom look bigger, and as we're about to find out, it's all about the legs.

'With modern homes becoming smaller and more compact, choosing the right furniture can make a big difference to how spacious the room feels, both practically and visually,' explains interior designer Emma Detering, founder and creative director of Kelling Designs.

And as our design experts go on to reveal, the higher the legs on the furniture you choose for a small bedroom, the more space you'll create.

'Opting for furniture with high legs is a simple trick that can make a small bedroom look visually bigger,' explains Emma. Why? 'Because it allows more of the floor to be seen underneath the furniture, creating a greater sense of space and making the room feel less crowded.'

'Furniture with visible legs can be a really useful trick in a smaller bedroom,' agrees interior designer and founder of Pringle & Pringle, Sophie Pringle.

'Being able to see the floor beneath a bed, chest of drawers, or bedside table creates a sense of openness and allows the eye to travel further through the room, rather than having lots of solid blocks of furniture interrupting the floor plane.'

And like all the best design tricks, 'it’s a subtle difference,' says Sophie, 'but when space is limited, those glimpses of floor can make the whole room feel lighter and less crowded.'

Clever, right? And when it comes to bijou-bedroom furniture choices, our design experts have even more top tips up their sleeve. 'I particularly like combining this trick with furniture that has a relatively slender profile,' says Sophie, 'that way you retain plenty of visual breathing space around each piece.'

Other tricks to create the illusion of space

'Lighter coloured furniture can also help to make a small bedroom feel more spacious, particularly when it sits comfortably within the tone of the walls and flooring,' adds Sophie.

'Rather than having lots of strong contrasts, which can make individual pieces feel more prominent, a quieter palette allows the furniture to blend into the overall scheme and gives the room a more cohesive feel.'

'That said, I wouldn’t suggest that everything has to be pale,' advises the Pringle & Pringle founder. 'A small bedroom can still have plenty of character - it’s more about being considered with the overall visual weight of the pieces and avoiding too many competing focal points.'

Interior designer Emma is also a fan of lighter coloured furniture for small spaces. 'It can help to make the space feel brighter and more spacious,' says Emma, plus, 'as lighter finishes reflect light and help to create a more open feeling within the room.'

'It’s also really important to consider the size and scale of the furniture you choose,' advises Emma. 'Always get the biggest and best quality mattress and bed the room can take, but be mindful of the other furniture pieces you introduce into the space.'

'Avoid filling the room with unnecessary furniture and instead consider pieces that are practical and work harder,' suggests Emma. 'Choosing furniture with built-in storage, such as ottoman beds with storage underneath, can be a great way to maximise space without adding additional furniture and taking up valuable floor space.'

And Emma isn't the only fan of hidden storage and multifunctional furniture in a bijou bedroom. 'In a small bedroom, every piece needs to earn its place,' agrees Sophie. 'I look for furniture that can perform more than one function and storage that uses the full height of the room.'

'I also like to free up the floor wherever possible,' says Sophie. 'Wall-mounted bedside shelves or lighting can be a great alternative to bulky bedside tables, while an ottoman at the end of the bed can provide useful storage without requiring another separate piece of furniture.'

Overall, 'the aim is to create a clear, easy flow around the room,' explains Sophie, 'when you can move through the room comfortably and see more of the floor, even a very small bedroom can feel surprisingly generous.'

When I sat down with TV presenter, podcaster and influencer Olivia Attwood to get the lowdown on her home, she revealed the one place she shops that makes her bed feel as luxurious as the Four Seasons: John Lewis.

Following Olivia’s recent collaboration with Ninja to promote the new CRISPI Microwave, I was able to spend time with the star and find out what makes her house feel like home.

'Peige' bedrooms are having a moment. As we move into the latter part of 2026 and start looking at 2027 paint trends, interior experts agree this is the 'it' colour to keep on your radar.

You'll remember greige – that versatile mix of grey and beige – that's been a staple of every neutral interior for the past few years. Well, peige takes a leaf from its book.

This on-trend shade mixes pink and beige to create bedroom ideas that are warm, elegant, and stylishly grown-up.

'Peige is definitely having a moment in the bedroom, and it makes complete sense,' says Katerina Tchevytchalova, founder of interior design studio K'Arte Design. This is why the design experts agree peige is *the* bedroom colour to choose for AW26 and beyond.

Interior experts say peige is becoming a key colour trend

'Is 'peige' becoming more popular as a bedroom colour? Yes,' says Cathryn Sanders, head of creative at paint brand Earthborn. 'We're seeing growing interest in warmer neutrals, and peige fits perfectly into that trend.'

This year, bedroom trends are increasingly moving away from cooler shades as we search out colours that Cathryn describes as feeling 'softer, more comforting and lived-in.'

'Peige combines the warmth of beige with the subtle uplifting qualities of pink, creating a shade that feels both contemporary and timeless,' explains Cathryn.

'We've been seeing a real shift away from cool, stark neutrals towards warmer tones with more character,' agrees interior designer Katerina, 'and peige sits perfectly in that space. It's a soft, warm shade of beige with just enough pink running through it to feel gentle and inviting.'

Why peige is such a good colour choice for a bedroom

So, why is peige such a good colour choice for a bedroom in particular? 'Peige is an excellent choice for a bedroom because it strikes a balance between warmth and softness,' explains Cathryn. 'Beige creates a calming foundation, while the pink undertones add a subtle sense of comfort and warmth that can make a room feel more inviting.'

'People increasingly want sleep spaces that promote relaxation and wellbeing,' says Cathryn, 'and peige offers a gentle, cocooning feel without being as overtly colourful as a traditional pink.'

'It also changes beautifully throughout the day,' adds Cathryn. 'In natural daylight, peige can feel fresh and airy, while in the evening it develops a cosy, enveloping quality that's perfect for a restful bedroom environment.'

'Peige is a wonderful bedroom colour because it feels soft and comforting without being overly sweet,' agrees Marianne Shillingford, creative director and colour expert at Dulux. 'The warmth of the pink undertone helps take the edge off a traditional neutral, creating a space that feels cocooning and restful while still being incredibly easy to live with.'

'Peige works so well in a bedroom because it has that enveloping, cocooning quality without ever tipping into feeling twee or overly feminine,' adds interior designer Lara Clarke, founder of Lara Clarke Interiors. 'It's soft enough to feel calming but has enough depth to stop a room from feeling flat, which is often the problem with a straightforward beige.'

'It’s much less stark than a traditional beige and less sweet than a conventional pale pink, so it gives you a really sophisticated starting point,' agrees interior designer Laura Stephens.

Interior designers top tips for decorating a bedroom in peige

I'm certainly convinced this is the go-to shade for a stylish bedroom, but do our design experts have any top tips for how to decorate with this warm neutral?

'My tip when decorating with peige is to layer it with other warm, earthy tones like clay, terracotta or soft taupe, and bring in natural materials such as linen, timber and wool to add depth,' shares interior designer Katerina.

'I'd avoid pairing it with anything too cool or grey, as this can drain the warmth from the shade. Instead, let it sit within a soft, tonal scheme so the whole room feels cocooning and restful.'

'Lean into natural materials to bring out peige's warmth,' agrees Lara, 'and don't be afraid to use it head to toe, walls, woodwork and all; it's a colour that benefits from commitment rather than being used sparingly. I'd also add a deeper accent, whether that's through a headboard, curtains or a rug, to stop the scheme feeling one-note.'

'The key is not to treat peige as a completely neutral backdrop and then leave the room feeling flat,' agrees interior expert Laura. 'I would use it as the foundation and then build up layers of texture, pattern and slightly deeper tones around it.'

'Natural linens, upholstered furniture, antique pieces and warm woods all work beautifully with this palette, while touches of burgundy, terracotta, olive or chocolate can give it more depth,' shares Laura.

And, like Lara, Laura suggests taking the colour beyond the walls. 'Painting the ceiling, woodwork or even built-in joinery in a related tone can make the room feel much more considered and cocooning,' explains Laura.

'And, as with any bedroom scheme, lighting is incredibly important - a combination of bedside lamps, wall lights and softer ambient lighting will bring out the warmth in those pinky-beige tones and make the room feel particularly inviting in the evening.'

And the best part of peige? It may be the colour of the moment when it comes to bedroom design ideas, but it's also one of those shades that manages to be both bang on trend *and* timeless. So this isn't a colour that's going to go out of style anytime soon.

'I’ve always loved using these slightly muddy, pink-tinged tones because they have a timeless quality and are incredibly easy to layer with other colours,' says Laura.

'Peige is a lovely colour for a bedroom because it brings warmth without being a bold, definitive statement,' agrees Katerina, 'and that makes it very easy to live with long-term.'

I put the Groove Adjustable Memory Foam pillow to the test on my own bed and slept on it for a week to see how it compares to the best pillows on the market.

In a nutshell

Does it have any downsides? Yes, at least it does for me. I found it a little too firm – my ear felt squashed compared to my usual bouncy latex pillow – and I found it warm to sleep on. I love a cool pillow, and I found I had a hot head after I'd been lying on it for 15 minutes or so.

However, if you can overlook those niggles, I think this pillow will suit a lot of people, so if you're looking for the best memory foam pillow, or a good pillow for side sleeping, it's definitely one well worth having on your radar.

Comfort

The main selling point of the Groove Adjustable Memory Foam Pillow is its adjustable height. The pillow has a zipped cover, and inside are four removable layers, which means you can adjust the pillow to multiple different heights.

Why is this important? Because, as the Groove product page explains, 'if your pillow is too high or too low for your frame, it can contribute to shoulder pain, headaches, and poor sleeping posture.'

As I've discovered during the five years I've been testing pillows as Ideal Home's Sleep Editor, this tends to mean that a one-size pillow that might suit one person perfectly can be completely wrong for another. And this is particularly the case if, like me, you're a side sleeper.

As the Groove website continues to explain, 'wider frames or broad shoulders need more loft to fill the gap between neck and mattress; too little, and the shoulder takes the strain instead.' In contrast, petite frames may find most side sleeping pillows offer too much height, which 'forces the neck to crane upward all night; less loft keeps the spine level.'

Those removable layers mean you can make the Groove Adjustable Memory Foam Pillow the exact right height for *your* body. Plus, it's ergonomically shaped, with moulded sections designed to support your neck whether you're lying on your side or back.

It took me some experimenting to find the right height for me. Initially, I removed two layers, but found I woke with a sore neck as the pillow was still too high. However, after removing another of the thinner layers, I found my 'just right'.

This meant that when I lay on my side, my head and neck were supported in alignment with my spine. I always use a body pillow to help prevent me from rolling forward or back at night (Woolroom's Washable Wool Body Pillow or the Simba Body Pillow are two of the best), and with the Groove pillow under my head and a body pillow at my side, I had good sleep posture all night long.

The downsides? I found this is a pretty firm pillow. I'm used to sleeping on a latex pillow (the Woolroom Natural Latex Washable Wool Pillow is my pillow of choice), and in contrast to latex's springy, zero-gravity feel, the memory foam-filled Groove Adjustable pillow felt very solid and dense under my ear.

As such, it was a little *too* firm for me, and I found I woke up with a bit of a squashed ear the first few nights, although I did get used to the firmer feel as my week's testing wore on.

Plus, I know a lot of people who love a firmer feel under their head. My colleague Zoe raves about the Simba Hybrid Firm Pillow, which I find *far* too firm, so pillow density does come down to personal preference.

Temperature regulation

I actually tested two of Groove's pillows over the summer: the Groove Adjustable Memory Foam Pillow and the Groove Air Cooling Pillow. However, unfortunately, I found both slept warmer than I would have liked.

This is a common problem with memory foam pillows, and despite the addition of cooling technologies, I found my head still got a lot hotter on these pillows than it does when I lay on latex, wool, or feather and down.

Admittedly, I'm a hot sleeper, and I tested these pillows during a heatwave. But I made sure to test them in much cooler weather too, and I still found I got a hot and slightly sweaty head after 15 minutes or so.

My overheating was helped by adding a cooling pillowcase to the pillow (I recommend one of the best silk pillowcases if your budget can stretch), but I wouldn't say that good temperature regulation is this pillow's strong suit.

Ease of care

Like all memory foam pillows, the inner core of the Groove Adjustable Memory Foam Pillow can't be washed. However, you can unzip the cover and wash that on a 30°C machine wash.

Being memory foam, there's also no need to plump this pillow or redistribute the filling, so there's really very little care involved in keeping it in good condition.

The only downside I found was finding somewhere to store the adjustable layers that I removed.

Sleep trial

Groove offers a *very* generous 100 nights to test out this pillow and see if it helps to improve your sleep. That's one of the longest sleep trials in the pillow market and should be plenty of time to see if its unusual shape and adjustable layers suit your sleep style.

Value for money

As of writing, the Groove Adjustable Memory Foam Pillow costs just £45, which I think is very good value for money for an adjustable pillow.

For comparison, the adjustable Simba Hybrid Pillow costs an eye-watering £109, and The Fine Bedding Company's Adjustable HoneyFoam Pillow will set you back £99. That said, both of these pillows do have infinitely adjustable fill. Instead of layers, they're constructed from hundreds of memory foam 'clusters' you can add or remove to your heart's content.

Both the Simba Hybrid and HoneyFoam pillows are also softer in feel, although I found they didn't keep my head as well-aligned for side sleeping as the firmer Groove Adjustable did.

How I tested

To test out this pillow, I slept on it for a week on my own bed to assess its comfort and temperature regulation. I also assessed its ease of care, any sleep trials available, and how it compares to similar products on the market to see if it offers good value for money.

We ask a lot of our bedrooms. Not only do we want them to be sanctuaries of rest and relaxation, but for many of us, our bedrooms also need to double as storage areas, dressing rooms, and, often, workspaces.

However, we all know that, ideally, work, rest, and play should be kept separate. So if we *do* need to add a desk to our bedroom, how do we do so without disturbing our much-needed shut-eye or impacting the feel of our bedroom ideas?

I asked interior designers how to add a desk to a bedroom without impacting the feel of a bedroom, and most importantly, without ruining our sleep. These are their top five tips.

'In the past few years, we've had to think differently about how our homes work, and finding space for a desk without disturbing the calm of a bedroom is something we design for often,' says Katerina Tchevytchalova, interior designer and founder of K'Arte Design.

'The key is to treat the desk as part of the room's architecture rather than an add-on,' says Katerina. That way, 'it doesn't feel like a workstation has been dropped into a sleep space.' This is how to do just that.

1. Think about your bedroom layout

First, consider your bedroom layout. Ideally, keep relaxation as the bedroom's main focus, so place the desk somewhere that isn't centre stage.

'I'd avoid positioning the desk as the first thing you see when you walk into the bedroom,' explains interior designer Lara Clarke, founder of Lara Clarke Interiors. 'Tucking a desk into a corner or against a window wall keeps the bed as the room's focal point, which is exactly where you want the eye to land in a bedroom.'

In addition, interior designer and founder of Studio Raymond, Carina Raymond, suggests also bearing in mind what you can see once you're in bed. 'Think carefully about what you can see from the bed,' advises Carina. 'If possible, position the desk so that work isn’t the first thing you see when you’re lying down.'

After all, our brains can switch into rest mode more quickly if work isn't the last thing we see before we close our eyes.

2. Make use of awkward alcoves

Obviously, where you place your desk will also depend on your bedroom's size and shape, but if you have any interesting nooks and crannies, Carina says they can be the perfect spot for a hidden workspace.

'I like to tuck a compact desk into an alcove, beneath a window or into bespoke joinery, so that it feels integrated into the architecture rather than becoming another large piece of furniture,' says Carina.

'Awkward nooks, alcoves and spaces beneath sloping ceilings can be ideal because they naturally give the desk its own zone,' agrees Sophie Chapman, interior designer and associate at design studio The Vawdrey House.

'Bespoke joinery can also help integrate a desk with wardrobes or shelving so that it feels like part of the room rather than an office that has simply been added to it.'

3. Master the art of concealment

However, if a hidden alcove isn't available in your bedroom, don't worry. Our interior experts have plenty of other tricks up their sleeves.

'A desk that can be closed away behind doors is particularly effective,' says Carina. 'The aim is to create a clear visual distinction between work and rest, even when they have to coexist in the same room.'

Think hideaway desks or bureaus that, once closed, look like a simple sideboard or cupboard. Or, 'a slim console-style desk can also work beautifully where space is tight,' adds Carina.

4. Blend the desk into your decor

Next, avoid choosing any furniture that feels like it would be more at home in an office. Ideally, you want a bedroom desk to blend in with the rest of your bedroom decor.

'I think it’s important not to make the workspace feel too corporate,' says Carina. To achieve a look more fitting for the bedroom, 'use the same materials, colours, and decorative language as the rest of the bedroom.'

'Choose a material that matches the rest of the room's palette, so it reads as furniture rather than office equipment,' agrees Katerina. And the interior designer also suggests not opting for too large a desk; after all, 'a desk should support the bedroom, not dominate it.'

'Keep the desk itself pared back,' seconds Lara. 'A simple, floating shelf-style desk takes up far less visual space than a bulky freestanding one, and choosing a finish that matches the rest of the joinery helps it disappear into the scheme.'

Plus, don't forget what goes *with* the desk too. 'Choose a beautiful chair and considered lighting so that the desk feels like part of the interior scheme,' advises Carina.

5. Think storage, storage, storage

Once you've found the most unobtrusive desk and placement, don't forget to keep your work-related bits and bobs hidden too. 'Use drawers or concealed storage to keep laptops, paperwork and cables out of sight at the end of the day,' advises Carina.

'The key is to make the workspace feel contained rather than allowing work to take over the bedroom,' agrees Sophie. 'Where possible, include storage so laptops, paperwork and chargers can be put away at the end of the day.

'A desk that can be closed behind doors is particularly effective,' says Sophie, 'but even a drawer and good cable management can make a big difference. The aim is to be able to switch off from work when the working day ends.'

'When everything has a place, and the working area can be easily tidied away, the bedroom can retain that sense of calm and sanctuary that it should ultimately provide,' shares Carina.

Ultimately, 'if a bedroom needs to double up as a workspace, the key is to make the desk feel like a considered part of the room rather than an office that happens to be in the bedroom,' says Carina.

'Adding a desk to a bedroom is completely achievable,' agrees Lara, 'it just needs to be treated as a considered zone rather than an obvious workstation plonked in the corner.'

That way, as Lara says, 'you can keep your bedroom feeling restful, rather than it feeling like an office that happens to have a bed in it.'

I doubt that any of us would name changing a duvet cover as one of our favourite household tasks, and there's no denying that simply zipping up a duvet cover is quicker and easier than forcing ten buttons (that never seem to fit) through ten buttonholes (and then constantly rebuttoning them every time one pops undone).

From bedroom rug trends to what goes on the bed, design experts say geometrics are one of the key looks of the season. And when those checkerboard geometrics are paired with this autumn's most stylish colourways – moss green and aubergine – the effect is an instant bedroom upgrade.

We’ve all got our own personal preferences when it comes to the design of our bedrooms, whether we have a small bedroom to decorate or a larger space. Some of us like to use the blank canvas of a bedroom to stamp our personality onto it, filling it with colour and personal trinkets. Others opt to create as serene a sleep sanctuary as possible, with muted tones, comfy textures, and minimal personal clutter, like all the best five-star hotel bedrooms.

But despite the fact that taste is subjective, there are a few collective design choices that give interior professionals the serious ‘ick ’, with certain aesthetic options undeniably making them cringe.

We spoke to interior designers who design homes day in and day out, and style experts at some of the UK’s biggest interior brands, to ascertain the bedroom decor ‘icks’ they wish we’d all avoid, and how you can actually improve upon these ‘icks’ if you find yourself guilty of some of the below…

1. Busy feature walls

For Victoria Robinson, style & trend expert at Hillarys, the popular trend of a busy feature wall behind a bed is a huge ‘ick’, with the expert explaining that it can be much too busy for a space that’s meant to be so relaxing.

'A bold wallpaper idea can work brilliantly' she says. 'But when the pattern is very large, highly contrasting or clashes with the rest of the scheme, it can overwhelm a space that's supposed to feel calm and restful.'

To improve the overall ambience of the room, Victoria explains that you don’t need to abandon wallpaper, patterns or lots of colour entirely. 'I'd just opt for a softer approach,' she says. 'A subtle patterned wallpaper, textured wall finish or even just a beautifully dressed window can create just as much visual impact, without dominating the bedroom.'

Even a small pop of wallpaper over a bed as shown above will help add pattern and interest to a room without overwhelming the space.

2. Matching furniture

Some design ‘icks’ apply from room to room. And as experts explained that overly matching furniture is a living room design 'ick' - they also agree that the same distaste applies in the bedroom.

For interior designer Catherine Colegrave, creative director at Eighty Four Interiors, matching furniture can make your room look too showhome-like; rather than lived in. 'If the bed, bedside tables, chest of drawers and wardrobe all come from exactly the same range, it’s a bit of an ‘ick’ for me. It can make the room feel a bit like a furniture showroom, and appear a little flat and uninteresting,' she says.

Instead, she recommends finding pieces and furniture that feel similar to one another, but that aren’t exactly identical in style like in the bedroom shown above. 'This gives the room more character, and creates that sense that everything has been properly thought through and considered, rather than simply choosing a matching set,' Catherine says. 'I think a bedroom feels so much more interesting when you layer different materials, finishes and shapes that still sit beautifully together.'

3. A TV in the bedroom

Though it may not technically be a design choice, for Catherine, a TV in the bedroom can seriously ruin the otherwise beautiful design you’ve chosen for your room, particularly if it really dominates the space. 'Bedrooms should feel calm and relaxing, and a big black rectangle on the wall can really take away from that,' she explains.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t have a TV in your bedroom! There are some fantastic bedroom TV ideas out there to help hide it away.

'If you do want a TV in the bedroom - which is, for many people, a really nice addition - I think it’s really worth looking at ways to conceal it, maybe behind sliding doors, within some joinery, or even having it built within an ottoman at the end of the bed,' Catherine suggests.

4. An all-white bedroom

“For me, the biggest bedroom ‘ick’ is when everything is so pale and neutral that the room ends up feeling a little lifeless,” Kate Palmer, Creative Director at The Painted Furniture Company says.

She explains that the ‘ick’, for her, lies in the lack of variety and texture in a bedroom like this. 'There’s nothing wrong with a calm bedroom, but if every element in your bedroom is beige, cream or white and there’s very little contrast, it can lack the warmth that makes a bedroom feel inviting,' Kate says. 'I think bedrooms work best when they feel restful but still have a sense of personality; they don’t need to be completely colourless to be calming.'

Luckily, this particular ‘ick’ is easily solved with some clever purchases. Kate explains, 'I’d introduce colour through one or two key pieces of furniture. A painted chest of drawers or bedside tables in a deeper or more characterful shade can completely change the feel of the room.

'You can then pick up that colour in smaller details such as cushions, lamps or artwork.'

5. Items that are too small for the room

Choosing items that are out of proportion with the rest of the room is one of Catherine’s biggest design ‘icks’ in the bedroom. It's something she says makes the room look less stylish and considered.

And this applies to so many different bedroom items, Catherine tells us.

'Proportion makes such a difference,' she says. 'For example, if you’ve got a king or super king bed and use standard pillows or small cushions, everything can start to look a bit lost; for me, larger beds need large pillows, rather than standard ones.'

'I’m also not keen on a little throw that just sits across the very end of the bed. I love a lightweight throw that’s generous enough to fall down either side. It just looks so much more elegant,' Catherine continues.

Tiny bedside furniture is another of Catherine’s lines in the sand. 'Really small bedside tables are another ‘ick’! Especially when everything ends up piled on top of them. If you’ve got the space, I’d always go a little more substantial and ideally have some proper storage, so all the chargers, books and everyday bits can be tucked away. It makes the whole bedroom feel much calmer,' she explains.

The final design of a bedroom will all come down to personal taste, but if you're struggling to put your finger on something that's currently not working in you room, it might just be one the things on this list.

Yep, the experts say that the key to maximising a bijou bedroom is getting this curtain detail right. So if you're looking for ways to make your small bedroom ideas feel more spacious, let's get started.

Now, when it comes to bedroom curtain ideas, most of us might think that choosing the right colour and fabric are the most important details. However, our design experts say there's something else just as important to factor in, especially if you're furnishing a small bedroom.

Namely, that's the height of your curtains. And you might be surprised to find out that this isn't a situation where less is more.

Instead, our interior designers reveal that the key to dressing the windows of a small bedroom is to go bigger, not smaller.

The window dressing trick that makes small bedroom look bigger

Rather than simply hanging your curtains to frame your window, our design experts say that we should consider utilising all of the space *above* the bedroom window as well.

Why? Because, as Katerina Tchevytchalova, founder of interior design studio K'Arte Design, explains, 'full-height curtains are one of the simplest tricks for making a small bedroom feel bigger.'

'Hanging the track as close to the ceiling as possible, rather than just above the window frame, draws the eye upwards and emphasises the height of the room,' explains Katerina, 'so the space feels taller and more generous than it actually is.'

'Full-height curtains naturally draw the eye upward, giving bedroom walls the appearance of added height and making the bedroom itself look bigger,' agrees Chloe Dacosta, design manager at window dressing specialist Blinds2Go.

And, according to interior designer Lara Clarke, founder of Lara Clarke Interiors, it isn't just extra curtain *height* we should consider in a small bedroom.

'Full-height curtains are one of the easiest tricks for making a small bedroom feel bigger,' says Lara. 'It's a small adjustment that makes a disproportionate difference. However, width matters just as much as height.'

'Extending the curtain pole well beyond the window frame, so the curtains sit against the wall rather than the glass when open, lets in more light and makes the window itself look larger,' reveals Lara.

'Think "high and wide"', agrees Helen O’Connor, product and trend manager at 247 Blinds. 'Hanging curtains higher than the window frame draws the eye upwards, while extending the pole or track beyond the sides of the window helps create the impression of a wider and maximises natural light.

'Natural light is particularly valuable in a small bedroom, so you don’t want your curtains unnecessarily reducing it during the day.'

Other window dressing tricks for a small bedroom

So, we now know that high and wide is the way to make curtains work best in a small bedroom. But do our design experts have any other top tips for creating the illusion of extra space via window dressing choices?

'My other tip for making a small bedroom look bigger would be to keep the curtain and wall colour tonal,' says Katerina.

'A stark contrast between wall and fabric will visually cut the room in half, whereas a soft, tonal palette lets the curtains blend into the architecture rather than compete with it.'

'Keeping your curtain colour close to the wall tone helps the curtains recede rather than cutting the room in half,' agrees Lara.

'I'd also avoid anything too heavy or fussy in a small room,' says Katerina. 'A lighter fabric that puddles less and pools softly at the floor keeps the space feeling airy rather than weighed down.'

However, if your floor space is limited, Chloe does suggest an alternative approach to avoid a trip hazard. 'I would aim for your full-length curtains to hover just above the floor,' she says, 'ensuring easy opening and maximum coverage.'

'Additionally, choosing lighter colours for your curtains can give a small bedroom a brighter feel,' says Chloe, 'making it feel more spacious.'

'Colour and pattern can make a difference too,' says Helen. 'You don’t have to stick to white or beige, but softer colours or curtains that sit within the room’s overall colour palette will help the space feel calmer and more open.'

'If you do want to opt for a pattern, a subtle vertical design, such as a stripe, can help emphasise the room height,' Helen adds. 'And in a particularly compact bedroom, I’d be careful not to overwhelm the window with very bulky fabrics or excessive volume.'

'A curtain that hangs beautifully but stacks back relatively neatly will give you the softness of fabric without making the window area feel crowded,' says Helen.

Bear these design tricks in mind when it comes to your window dressing, and your small bedroom will soon look far larger than its measurements might suggest.

How we test electric blankets

We test each electric blanket at home, on our own bed, for at least a week. During testing, we assess the following factors.

1. Attaching the electric blanket to the bed

First up, we assess how easy it is to attach the electric blanket to our mattress.

We also assess whether the electric blanket covers the entire mattress surface (I’ve found that many electric blankets scrimp on size) and how securely the blanket stays in place throughout the testing period.

2. How comfortable is the electric blanket to lie on?

Next up, it's comfort. Once the electric blanket is attached to the mattress, we lie on it and assess any changes to our sleep comfort.

Can we feel any of the electrical wires through our bedsheet? Is the blanket padded at all? And if so, does that padding make our bed more or less comfortable?

We also note the location of the electrical sockets, and if they're in a comfortable place where they can’t be felt when we’re lying down.

3. How quickly does the electric blanket heat up?

There's nothing worse than lying there shivering whilst an electric blanket takes twenty minutes to heat up. So next up, we time how long it takes the blanket to reach maximum temperature.

We also investigate how many heat settings the electric blanket has, and how easy it is to find our ideal temperature. (The more heat settings, the easier it is to fine-tune your ideal warmth level).

4. Does the electric blanket work for couples?

We also note whether the larger sizes of the electric blanket (i.e. the double/king/super king sizes) have dual controls.

Dual controls are very useful if you share your bed with a partner, as it means both sides of the electric blanket can be operated independently.

That means that if you're hot-blooded whilst your partner sleeps cold, you can each tailor your comfort to suit your individual requirements (with less arguments about the thermostat!).

5. How easy is the electric blanket to use?

Next up, we test how easy we find the electric blanket to use.

We consider whether the controls are physically easy to operate, and if we can see the controls and temperature settings in the dark.

We note whether the electric blanket has a timer so it automatically switches off at a set time, in case you fall asleep whilst it's on.

We also note if the electric blanket has an auto-shut-off feature that turns off the blanket if the internal sensors detect dangerous overheating, as well as any other useful functionality.

6. Ease of care

Next, we find out if the electric blanket can be washed. If so, we note the care instructions and wash and dry the electric blanket according to the manufacturer's advice to check how easy the process is.

7. Value for money

Lastly, we consider the electric blanket's value for money. We consider how much it costs to buy, and if we think this offers good value for money for what the product delivers.

Plus, we find out the electric blanket's wattage, and consider how much the electric blanket costs to run.

We also compare the blanket to other similar products we've tested to see how it compares to its competition.

Ultimately, we sum up what we like about the electric blanket, what we don’t like, and whether we'd recommend it to you, our readers.

We then use this testing data to rate each electric blanket we review out of five stars.

'The use of warm tones, layered textures and soft lighting helps to create that sense of comfort you associate with a boutique hotel, while still feeling like a welcoming space within a home.

‘There is a real benefit to giving a guest bedroom a hotel-inspired feel because it makes the room feel like an experience rather than simply somewhere for visitors to sleep. Small details such as quality bedding, ambient lighting, comfortable seating and carefully chosen accessories can make guests feel looked after and give the room a more finished, elevated feel.’

The hotel interiors trend

This year, chic, hotel-esque interiors have undoubtedly been trending, as we all look for ways to inject hotel-style luxury into our homes. As a result, we’ve seen everything from hotel plants to glam up your garden to luxury hotel bedroom ideas for the most restful night's sleep. And it all boils down to the fact that we want the escapism of going on holiday, without the high costs of a boutique hotel room.

‘The hotel look is particularly popular because people are increasingly looking to recreate the feeling of luxury and escapism they experience when staying somewhere special. It also works well with the wider trend towards creating homes that feel like a retreat, with comfort, relaxation and sensory details becoming just as important as how a room looks,’ says Sergiu.

What makes Molly’s transformation so successful is that she’s shown her neutral colour palette can evolve as tastes change, creating a room that is beautifully inviting and cosy.

‘Molly has used pale neutral bedrooms for years, but she’s clearly becoming more interested in warmth and character within that palette,’ explains Blanca Sanchez, director of Halo Design Interiors.

'Her recent bedroom redesigns have moved towards warmer finishes, and I’d copy that evolution rather than copying individual products. You don’t have to paint a neutral bedroom burgundy to make it feel richer because sometimes the problem isn’t the colour itself; it’s that every surface has the same temperature.

‘A hotel approach makes you look at the room from the guest’s point of view. Instead of treating it as a spare bedroom that happens to contain a bed, you start thinking about what somebody sees and feels when they walk through the door.

'The bed becomes the centre of the room, and everything around it should reinforce that. That’s particularly useful in a guest bedroom because it stops the space from becoming a collection of furniture that wasn’t wanted elsewhere.’

How to get the look

‘For anyone wanting to create their own cosy hotel-inspired guest bedroom, I would focus on layering first,' Sergiu advises. 'Start with high-quality bedding, add different textures through cushions and throws, introduce warm, low-level lighting and keep the colour palette cohesive. Curtains, rugs and upholstered furniture can also help to soften the room and make it feel more luxurious.

‘The final touch is to think about the details a guest might appreciate. A small chair, bedside lighting, a tray, fresh flowers or even a selection of toiletries can give the room that boutique hotel feeling without making it feel staged.

'The aim should be for the room to feel calm, comfortable and thoughtfully designed, rather than simply trying to replicate a hotel room.’

Blanca adds that adding an armchair to the room can also emphasise the luxe hotel look. You should definitely opt for one of the best accent chairs for your room, and Molly’s blue and white pinstripe number looks similar to Next’s Chenille Stripe Blue Lilly Armchair (£399).

‘A proper armchair is my favourite because it changes how you read the room immediately. It gives somebody somewhere to sit that isn’t the bed and fills the kind of awkward corner that can otherwise make a guest room look unfinished.

'I’d choose something upholstered and substantial rather than a tiny occasional chair. You want it to look comfortable enough that somebody might genuinely sit there with a coffee, because that’s exactly the detail that separates a lovely spare bedroom from a room that actually has that London hotel feeling,’ she says.

Molly Mae has nailed the chic hotel look. If you want to up your hosting game and give your guests the ultimate experience in comfort, it's a good example to follow.

As Ideal Home's Sleep Editor, I've seen a lot of weird and wonderful product launches in my time. But one thing I certainly never expected to see was ice cream maker Ben & Jerry's suddenly launching a pillowcase collection.

Better known for their frozen dessert, bedding seems a (very) strange new direction for the brand, but, actually, once I understood the logic, I have to admit that it makes sense. Kind of!

Is it a marketing gimmick? Absolutely. But it's also a gimmick that sleep experts say can actually work to help us sleep better in warm weather.

As Ben & Jerry's reveals, new research commissioned via OnePoll found that over half of Brits say flipping to the cool side of the pillow is crucial for a decent night’s sleep, with 56% agreeing that flipping to the cool side helps them fall asleep.

Ben & Jerry’s also found that a further 42% of those polled admitted they are already officially fed up with the summer heat, and 72% are now desperately craving 'cosy season'.

Had I been polled, I would definitely have been one of those cosy season cravers, and a large part of that is how badly I've slept during this summer's heatwaves.

I imagine none of us enjoy tossing and turning in bed when it's too hot and humid to drift off, and an overly warm pillow definitely adds to that misery.

Plus, as sleep expert and clinical psychologist Dr. Zoe Gotts explains, there's a scientific reason why a hot head makes it harder to fall asleep, and why cooling our cranium (otherwise known as head cooling or brain cooling) can help us sleep better.

'When you cool the head and neck area directly, you’re doing more than simply making yourself comfortable,' explains Zoe, 'you’re tapping into one of the body’s key signals for sleep: temperature.

'Cooling the head can help with heat dissipation and thermal comfort, particularly when you’re too warm to sleep, potentially making it easier to settle and stay asleep.

'Rather than forcing the brain to switch off, you’re creating the right thermal conditions for the body’s natural sleep system to take over. Think of it as helping your body press the sleep button,' Zoe explains.

Sorry, neutral bedding, there is a new bedding style we can’t get enough of this autumn, and I predict it will be making an appearance in the most stylish of homes. Experts are calling it ‘Grandma Chic’ and it's perfect for making your bedroom cosier this autumn.

Not only is Next one of the best places to buy bedding, but it’s also renowned for its beautiful bedding designs. Only recently, Ideal Home’s Sleep Editor, Amy Lockwood, was lusting over Next’s adorable new pumpkin bedding.

But why are these prints becoming increasingly popular? It’s as simple as shoppers looking to make their bedroom ideas feel more personal, and changing your duvet cover is one of the easiest ways to redecorate without spending a fortune or making any permanent changes.

'We're overstimulated by over-consumption and tired of homes that add to this overwhelm in our personal and professional lives, especially with social media,’ explains Laura Rich, interior designer at Furniturebox. Posting the before-and-after photos on her home Instagram @mollymaison, Molly explained that while there was absolutely nothing wrong with the space before, she was planning to stay in her home for a long time, so she wanted something ‘that feels completely like us’.

‘The warmer scheme also feels better suited to the proportions of the room. The bed provides a strong visual anchor, while the deeper wood tones prevent such a large space from feeling empty or overly polished. It now feels like a private retreat rather than simply an impressive room.

‘It is also a more tactile space. Timber grain, soft bedding, upholstery and layered fabrics bring sensory warmth, which is particularly important in a bedroom. The styling feels luxurious without being showy, and the combination of traditional forms with a restrained modern palette gives the room a timeless quality. Ultimately, it feels designed around rest rather than display.’

Is Molly Mae a good example to follow?

If you plan on decorating with neutrals, Molly Mae is always a good example to follow. She transformed her bedroom into a space that is both welcoming and screams old money sophistication.

And it’s for this reason that Marianne Shillingford, Creative Director and Colour Expert at Dulux, prefers the renovated bedroom, too.

‘They're both beautifully considered, but for a bedroom I'd lean towards the new design. There's something very comforting about those warm cream tones, particularly when they're paired with natural materials and softer lighting. A bedroom is ultimately somewhere we want to unwind at the end of the day, and this palette creates that sense of calm without the room feeling bland or lacking in character,’ she says.

‘What works so well in the finished room is the layering. Rather than relying on one colour or one statement feature, you've got warm neutral tones sitting alongside wood, linen, soft upholstery and pools of lamplight, which gives the room depth without making it feel busy

‘It's also a really timeless approach to decorating. When you build a decorating scheme around a considered palette and beautiful natural textures, rather than lots of competing trends, you create something that feels stylish now but will still feel lovely to live with for years to come.’

While I normally opt for a splash of colour, I have to say Molly Mae has nailed the cosy neutral look. I'll definitely be using her for inspiration for my own bedroom this autumn.

They may be slightly unexpected style icons, but Martin and Shirlie Kemp have been delivering plenty of design inspiration this summer. The celeb couple's fans have spent the summer swooning over the Kemps' picturesque garden, admiring both their statement DIY water feature and, more recently, their ingenious pumpkin archway.

However, the design inspo doesn't stop at their outside space. The Ideal Home team has already been impressed by the Kemps' classic Shaker kitchen, and now it's their restful bedroom that's caught our eye. The vintage-inspired boudoir is a masterclass in creating a relaxing sleeping space, and it's all down to Shirlie's use of one of Farrow & Ball's most popular colours.

In a social media post shared to her @maisonnumber9 Instagram account, Shirlie tells her followers about her bedroom redecoration project, and the star of the room is a decorative wooden headboard painted in a soft green shade.

Her followers can't get enough of the colourway, which Shirlie soon reveals is Farrow & Ball's Green Blue No. 84. 'The headboard needed a paint, so I used @farrowandball blue and green which matched the wallpaper beautifully!', shares Shirlie.

Yes, the paint's official title is 'Green Blue', not blue green, but it's an easy mistake to make, and it's clear which Farrow & Ball shade Shirlie plumped for. A delicate and slightly 'dirty' duck egg blue, Green Blue is pretty without being *too* pretty, and her followers are quick to praise its relaxing qualities.

'That's very pretty...a lovely restful colour!,' says one follower. 'Beautiful ✨want this same colour for my bedroom one day,' shares another admirer.

And her paint choice isn't the only thing her keen-eyed followers are quick to appreciate about Shirley's restful bedroom idea. The delicately patterned wallpaper is another hit.

'The wallpaper is beautiful,' says one commenter, after Shirlie shares that it's from one of her favourite brands.

'I’m a huge Nina Campbell fan, so I chose one of her wallpapers to decorate this bedroom, and I’m so pleased with it,' says Shirlie in the Instagram post, 'it has turned out prettier than I thought!'.

Personally, I'm also impressed by Shirlie's choice of bed linen. She's chosen to finish off her romantic Parisian-chic bedroom look with lace-edged pillowcases.

Pinterest named 'laced up' as one of the biggest trends of 2026, saying 'lace sets the pace in 2026, bringing unexpected elegance to absolutely everything. This trend is a gentle reminder that more is more: especially when it’s this gorgeous.'

And I certainly think that lace-edged bed linen is the finishing touch to this pretty bedroom idea.

Martin and Shirlie Kemp may not have been on our radar as bedroom style aficionados before, but following this room reveal, they are now!

In fact, as one follower comments on Shirlie's bedroom post: 'Love it! If you’ve not done already, you should publish an interiors book.'

Seasonal changes can feel sudden. One minute we're baking in seemingly endless summer heatwaves, and now, as we begin the journey into autumn, there's suddenly a chill in the air that suggests cooler times are ahead.

It's this time of year that many of our minds turn to cosying up our homes, and bedroom rugs are one of the key ways to do so.

But if you're currently in the market for some added warmth underfoot, what do bedroom rug trends look like this autumn and winter?

I asked three trend experts how bedroom rug ideas are evolving as we head into AW26 and beyond into 2027.

'As the seasons shift and evenings draw in, bedrooms naturally become cosier, more comforting spaces to retreat to,' says Georgia Fisher, textiles buyer for Heal’s. 'Rugs sit at the heart of this and are the ideal anchor point for building a cohesive scheme in a room.'

So, what looks in particular should we be keeping an eye out for as we head into autumn/winter 2026 and beyond?

1. Geometrics in autumnal colours

'For those wishing to make a statement, striking geometric designs are a key trend,' says Georgia, 'with strong shapes creating a structured sense of dimension.'

And, of course, as we leave summer behind, the colour palette shifts too, with warmer, earthier colours taking centre stage.

'As bedroom colours turn warmer and more grounded this winter, richer, earthier tones including cherry brown, burgundy and inky blue – as seen in the Offset rug by Heal’s – are complemented by deeper greens and softer pinks,' shares Georgia.

2. Scandi, in a warm palette

Of course, if you feel that multicoloured geometric patterns are a step too far for the bedroom, there is a more subtle way to introduce pattern this season.

This autumn, 'we’re seeing Scandi design evolve into something much warmer and more organic,' says David Barrett, head of design at John Lewis, in particular, 'our pastel flat weaves offer a delicate touch of pattern.'

3. Checkerboard, but make it cosy

Another on-trend alternative to a bold geometric bedroom rug is the simpler checkerboard design.

This is a timeless design choice that gets reinvented season after season, but in AW26, the look is less about graphic black-and-white checks, and more about a softer, less structured look.

'Slightly lived-in designs are a big trend,' agrees Maria O'Brien, VP of global design at rug retailer Ruggable. That less pristine, and more lived-in look might be achieved via texture, or through gentler, autumnal colourways.

4. Tonal pattern

And if you're still not sure about adding quite such a statement rug to your bedroom, another key trend for this season is more understated tonal patterns. That means less colour, and more pattern created through texture or slightly contrasting shades of the same hue.

'Softer, more tactile patterns can add depth to a bedroom without overwhelming the space,' says Maria.

Plus, 'another key trend we are seeing for autumn/winter includes the introduction of tonal linear patterns,' says Georgia.

5. Frames that ground the space

Or, you could opt for a 'framed' bedroom rug. This is a simpler geometric design that can 'cleverly ground the space', says Georgia at Heal's.

'Its simple yet impactful design offers a pared-back and contemporary effect that will work in any scheme for years to come,' says Georgia.

Choose an option in one of this season's 'it' colours for a bang-up-to-date look. 'We’re seeing a move towards richer, more cocooning colour palettes this autumn,' says Maria. 'Think deep burgundies, chocolate browns, warm rusts and earthy greens.'

Or, 'warm neutrals like camel and mustard continue to be a versatile choice this coming season,' adds Georgia.

Ultimately, as we head into the latter part of 2026 and towards 2027, our experts say that bedroom rugs are becoming more about warmth, personality, and a relaxed sense of 'home'.

'We’re seeing a shift away from overly coordinated interiors where every element feels like it has been bought as part of the same set,' explains Maria.

'Bedrooms are becoming more personal, with homeowners mixing colours, patterns, textures and eras to create spaces that feel more reflective of them.'

'We’re also moving away from very stark, minimal spaces in favour of warmer and more layered interiors,' shares Maria. 'That doesn’t necessarily mean maximalism – it’s more about adding softness, colour and personality through considered details.'

'When it comes to rugs specifically, we think the trend is moving away from choosing a rug simply because it ‘matches’ the room,' continues Maria.

'Instead, people are increasingly using rugs as an opportunity to introduce a contrasting colour, an unexpected pattern or a vintage-inspired feel, making them much more of a focal point within the bedroom.'

There are some things you might expect to sell well in a heatwave: ice cream, fans, portable air conditioners, perhaps. But I'm willing to bet that quilts wouldn't usually top your list of hot weather purchases.

However, such is the draw of John Lewis' autumn quilt collection that sales have soared this summer. Yep, even during the many heatwaves.

In fact, the John Lewis Leon Quilt in particular has sold out *twice* since it first went online, and cosy season hasn't even begun yet!

To be honest, I'm not surprised. When I predicted 2026's biggest bedding trends at the beginning of the year, two looks in particular were top of the list, and the John Lewis quilt collection nails both.

First, there is the artisanal, handcrafted look, and the brand's beautifully quilted and embroidered bedspreads, such as the John Lewis Floral Embroidered Quilt, sum up the look perfectly.

Then there was the promise that modern heirloom designs would take centre stage, and what says 'looks like your (very stylish) Granny could have made it' more than the brand's fantastic patchwork quilt collection.

When the Ideal Home team first saw the new bedspread range at John Lewis Press Day Preview, we knew these designs were about to sell like hot cakes.

And we were right. The quilts have been a huge hit with John Lewis shoppers, and since they launched online, selected lines have already sold out multiple times.

'Gorgeous bedspread,' says one 5-star reviewer of the John Lewis Diamond Patchwork Quilt on the brand's website. 'Very detailed and a nice modern twist on a patchwork quilt. It really elevates our bedroom.'

'The most beautiful throw,' raves another happy quilt owner. 'The quality and colours on this throw are truly second to none. I've bought complementary bedding and decorative cushions to go with it, and it's transformed our bedroom.'

'So pleased when I put this on the bed. It looked stunning,' shares another reviewer of the John Lewis Keya Suzani Quilt. 'I had hesitated buying because I thought it was a little expensive, but so glad I did.'

'Beautiful bedspread,' echoes another shopper who agrees the investment is worth it. 'It is great value for money given that it is extremely well made and has been beautifully designed.'

I couldn't be happier,' sums up another owner. 'I love it. Just what I was looking for.'

John Lewis quilts

As summer draws to a close and the cooler, darker nights draw in, I think now is definitely the time to snap up this bestselling bedding before it sells out again.

These are some of my favourite designs, and all are currently in stock and ready to transform your bed into a stylish and cosy cold-season retreat.

If, like me, you have a small bedroom, then your decorating decisions are probably based around maximising its sense of space. But before we think colour, storage, or clever design solutions, interior designers say there's one flooring trick that every small bedroom owner should know about.

Yep, when it comes to small bedroom ideas, design experts say this simple flooring trick is one of the best ways to make a small bedroom look bigger. This is one of those design tricks that feels simple once you know it, but if you don't know it, it can be a *big* design mistake that makes an already small bedroom look smaller still.

What is it? A decorating trick called 'continuous flooring'. And, as Katerina Tchevytchalova, founder of interior design studio K’Arte Design, explains, 'it’s a very effective way of making a small bedroom feel more spacious.'

What is continuous flooring?

So, firstly, what exactly is continuous flooring? 'Continuous flooring is basically using the same flooring material across adjoining spaces, without an obvious change in material, colour or pattern at the threshold,' explains Katerina.

'For example, carrying the same timber flooring from a hallway or landing straight into a bedroom.'

'The term 'continuous flooring' refers to using the same floor, running it seamlessly from one space to the next without a change in material, colour or pattern,' agrees Emma Deterding, founder and creative director of interior design studio Kelling Designs.

'In smaller bedrooms especially, it can be a very effective technique to make the room feel larger,' shares Emma, 'especially if the flooring flows from the landing or hallway into the room.'

Why is this a useful design trick for small bedrooms?

And why is continuous flooring such a useful design trick for a small bedroom?

As Emma explains, 'the uninterrupted flooring surface creates a stronger sense of visual continuity, making the actual boundaries between spaces less obvious.'

'By reducing the number of visual breaks, your eye travels further, creating the illusion of space in the bedroom,' says Emma.

'It’s a very effective way of making a small bedroom feel more spacious because your eye reads the spaces as connected rather than separate and creates a flow,' agrees Katerina.

What's the alternative?

And if we didn't use the continuous flooring technique? In contrast, 'different flooring would create a clear, harsh dividing line at the doorway, making the room feel even smaller,' explains Emma.

'Using different flooring creates a strong visual break at the doorway which immediately defines where one space ends and another begins,' agrees Katerina.

'In a small bedroom, I recommend blurring these visual boundaries by carrying the same flooring material from the hallway into the bedroom,' says Katerina.

'This creates a much more seamless flow and can make the room feel like an extension of the space beyond it, rather than a small, enclosed box.'

Other flooring tricks for a small bedroom

So, using one continuous flooring surface from your landing or hallway and into your bedroom is one surefire way to make a small bedroom look bigger, but do our design experts have any other flooring tricks up their sleeve?

'When working with a compact bedroom, I'd advise choosing a lighter, natural-toned flooring and keeping any patterns more muted,' advises Emma. 'A busy design can make an already small space feel quite cluttered visually.'

'I’d avoid flooring that feels too busy or has lots of contrast,' agrees Katerina. And, as the interior designer goes on to explain, this doesn't just mean avoiding the more obvious things, like a highly patterned carpet.

'If using timber flooring, choosing wider planks and a relatively consistent tone tends to create a calmer, more expansive effect than narrow boards with lots of variation,' reveals Katerina.

'I’d also be mindful of the direction in which the boards are running,' says Katerina. 'Running the boards along the longest dimension of the room can help visually elongate it.'

'If you're opting for wooden floors, lay the planks or boards lengthways towards the longest point of the room to help it feel longer, while larger-format boards with fewer joins can create a cleaner and airier feel,' agrees Emma.

Okay, but what about if you want something softer than timber underfoot?

'If you’re using carpet, I’d choose one with a subtle texture and keep the colour fairly close to the walls,' advises Katerina. 'Keeping the contrast between the floor and surrounding surfaces soft helps the room feel more open and less defined by its boundaries.'

Ultimately, the key to choosing flooring that makes a small bedroom look bigger is to 'reduce joins and visual interruptions,' says Emma.

As the interior designer explains, we should think about 'using the floor to draw the eye through the space for a calming feel that allows the room to feel as open as possible.'

I don't know about you, but where I live, it suddenly seems to have become autumn.

Only a week ago, I was hot, sweaty, and struggling to sleep during the latest summer heatwave, and now overnight temperatures have dropped to just 6°C, and it's suddenly chilly when the sun goes down.

Little wonder, then, that savvy M&S shoppers are already snapping up the brand's latest launch: the £20 M&S Brushed Cotton Striped Bedding Set.

Soft, cosy, and selling out in record time last year, I think this is the autumn bedding to snap up now, before the cold weather really hits, and this budget-friendly buy disappears from the shelves.

When it comes to where to buy bedding, M&S is always one of my top recommendations. However, I always think it's the brand's winter bedding that really hits the mark.

Last year, Marks & Spencer nailed one of the winter's biggest bedding trends with a sell-out brushed bedding collection that was one of the most stylish – and most affordable – ranges on the high street. And it looks like this year is going to follow suit.

The brand has just quietly dropped the first few lines of its autumn 2026 bedding collection, and this brushed cotton bedding set is already being snapped up by shoppers.

In fact, it's one of the most shopped bedding sets on the M&S website right now, according to the brand's on-site data.

I'm not surprised this set duvet cover and pillowcase set is proving so popular. To my mind, it nails the look and feel that many of us are craving after one of the hottest summers on record.

I, for one, can't wait for some cooler weather, and this is one of the first years I'm actually looking forward to getting cosy in bed as the nights draw in.

The best brushed cotton bedding is perfect for creating those cosy-core vibes. Plus, M&S has upped the cosy vibes even further by combining this tactile flannelette fabric with a traditional ticking stripe.

For me at least, the overall effect feels nostalgic, comforting, and a bit like being tucked up into bed at a favourite Nan or Grandma's house!

The striped collection is available in four autumnal shades: fern green, slate blue, dove grey, and a neutral linen colourway. And right now, they're all still in stock.

However, I have a feeling they won't stay that way. Especially once the cooler weather really hits. If last year is anything to go by, I imagine sizes will start disappearing fast.

Personally, I can't imagine any cosier bedding to hunker down under this autumn. That said, M&S does have some more great winter-warmers beginning to land on site and in-store. I've rounded up a few more new-season favourites below.

Shop alternatives

Do you stick one foot out of the duvet at night? If so, you're not alone. According to recently published research, over a third of British sleepers adopt this nighttime sleeping habit.

I was certainly one of those foot-sticker-outers until advice from a sleep expert changed my thinking.

As I learned, this common habit could actually be your body's signal that a few tweaks to your sleep setup are required. And as I discovered, a few simple changes can make all the difference to how well you rest at night.

When it comes to how to sleep better, this is what the experts want you to know.

Why we might stick one foot out of bed

A recent survey of 1,003 sleepers conducted by mattress retailer MattressNextDay found that 33% – or one in three people – sleep with one foot outside of the duvet during hot weather.

And according to sleep therapist Natalie Pennicotte-Collier, resident sleep expert at MattressNextDay, it is one of the few widely used sleep “hacks” that is supported by peer-reviewed science.

'Your body needs to drop its core temperature by one to two degrees Celsius to initiate and maintain healthy cycles of sleep,' explains Natalie.

However, if your sleep environment is too warm, 'your body’s natural cooling mechanisms struggle to release excess heat,' says Natalie. 'This trapped heat can make it harder to fall asleep and stay asleep, disrupting your normal sleep routine. However, your feet can provide a surprisingly effective solution.'

Why? Because 'your feet and ankles contain specialised blood vessels that help regulate body temperature by releasing excess heat,' shares Natalie.

'When you expose your feet to cooler air, you increase heat loss through the skin and help your body cool itself more effectively.'

This is why sleeping with one foot outside of the duvet is a science-backed solution to help us to fall asleep faster.

However, experts say that this sleep habit can also be indicative of a potential problem with our sleep setup.

The problem with sticking one foot out of bed

'When you’re too hot in bed, sticking one foot out of the duvet can certainly help combat this,' explains Chris Tattersall, sleep expert and managing director of natural sleep specialist Woolroom. 'This habit allows heat to escape from your body and helps to regulate your temperature.'

'However, if you're finding that you're having to do this frequently, it's worth considering your sleep environment as a whole,' says Chris.

That's because sticking a foot out of bed indicates your body is too hot, and often the cause of that overheating is our bedding, mattress, or both.

'If you're surrounded by synthetic fibres in your mattress, duvet and pillows, then you'll likely be getting hot and clammy due to the fibres trapping heat and moisture,' explains Chris.

That's because synthetic fibres, such as foam, memory foam, and polyester, lack breathability, and when air can't flow around your body, it tends to overheat. This can lead to a hot and sweaty night's sleep, and the need to stick one leg out from under the covers for some relief.

'To prevent overheating, the ideal solution is to opt for natural bedding fibres such as wool, which is naturally temperature regulating and moisture managing,' explains Chris.

'A recent study found that wool absorbed the least moisture and transported moisture 120% quicker than synthetic alternatives,' explains Chris. 'Wool bedding will therefore keep you cool, dry and comfortable all night long, even with your toes tucked under the duvet in a heatwave.'

The solution

As Ideal Home's Sleep Editor, I certainly found I stopped sticking my foot out from under the covers the moment I switched from synthetics to wool bedding.

In fact, I now swear by the bedding buys below. They've increased the breathability in my bed, which means a cooler sleep, and therefore a less disrupted night's rest.

After all, although we may not remember waking up to stick a leg out of bed, overheating lifts us out of deep sleep, so it can make us feel more tired and less well-rested in the morning.

However, it isn't just swapping to a wool duvet and switching to cotton or linen bedding that can make all the difference to getting a cooler sleep. Your sleep surface matters too.

'For people who naturally sleep hot, the sleep surface itself can become part of the problem because heat builds up underneath the body over several hours,' explains Natalie.

The solution? A pocket spring mattress filled with naturally breathable materials, such as wool, hemp, or cotton. Or, if you prefer a foam mattress, opt for one with cooling technologies added.

'A cooling mattress helps regulate temperature more consistently overnight,' says Natalie, 'rather than allowing heat and humidity to build up around the areas people overheat most, including the back, shoulders and hips.'

And if you don't have the budget to swap out your mattress for one of the best mattresses for hot sleepers right now, you could consider one of the best cooling mattress toppers instead.

These attach to the top of your existing mattress and add a breathable layer between your body and the mattress to help you sleep cooler.

A few simple swaps and sticking one foot out of the duvet could soon becme a thing of the past. And when that means a cooler, deeper, and more restorative sleep, I'm all for it.

To be quite honest, I’ve never fully considered how my bedside table could enhance the aesthetics of my bedroom. That is, until I spotted Habitat’s funky new bedside tables, included in their Autumn/ Winter 2026 collection.

When curating my bedroom ideas, the first things I consider are the room’s colour palette, followed by the best bedding to select and wall decor (I’m currently looking for a statement bamboo fan). Last on the list is my bedside table, which up until now hasn’t struck me as important.

In previous rentals, I simply used the bedside table provided, and when I moved into my unfurnished flat just over a year ago, a family friend donated a couple. Honestly, I didn’t care what they looked like (plain and wooden), just that they matched, and I greatly appreciated the offer.

Now, having seen the colourful options available at Habitat this autumn, I’ve realised I’ve been missing out on a whole new world of home decor. While mid-century bedside tables have been the defining bedside table trend for 2026, Habitat’s colourful, retro designs are perfect for breathing some youth into your home.

First to catch my eye was the Iro Bedside Table, which is also available in a stylish, dark red colourway. It’s a stunning statement, a piece combining bold colour and sculptural design. In my humble opinion, it looks like a work of art.

I prefer the icy blue colourway, which incidentally has been one of the biggest colour trends for this year. Plus, given that the table is made from steel, it gives the table an industrial look, which I love.

The one drawback I have with the table is that it lacks storage. Of course, you have the top of the unit to place your phone, book and even a lamp. And then at the base, there is space to store other items. However, this space isn't exactly private, so it's more for displaying ‘curated clutter’ such as extra books, rather than everyday bedside drawer clutter like extra phone chargers.

I also found myself drawn to the Geo Bedside Table, whose green tiled effect makes it stand out. Again, it’s great for those looking to go bold with their decor, yet its retro look is very on trend, too.

Online searches for coverless duvets have spiked in the past month; a trend that's likely driven by uni starters (and their parents) searching for one of this year's hottest bedding items.

Yep, coverless duvets are having a moment. But is a coverless duvet a good idea? And more specifically, is a coverless duvet any good for a uni student?

As Ideal Home's Sleep Editor, I've spent the past five years testing all kinds of bedding – including the best duvets on the market – and I'm here to share my thoughts.

What is a coverless duvet?

First up, it's worth making clear what a coverless duvet actually is, because this new trend didn't exist a few years ago.

A coverless duvet is a duvet that doesn't require a duvet cover. Instead, it's very similar to a standard duvet insert.

The casing of the duvet is simply a little thicker than your average duvet, and it's coloured or printed to imitate the look you'd usually get from the cover itself.

What's the point of a coverless duvet?

Wondering what the point of a coverless duvet is? Yep, that's the first question that popped into my head when I first became aware of the coverless duvet trend, too.

Well, the main point is that a coverless duvet means you only have one item to wash. You don't need to faff around washing, ironing, and putting on a duvet cover; you simply wash the entire coverless duvet in one go.

Are coverless duvets any good for uni students?

And that leads us on to our main question: are coverless duvets any good for uni students?

Now I have to admit, I haven't been that convinced by coverless duvets up to now. I'm certainly not a fan of changing a duvet cover, but is washing an entire duvet every few weeks really any easier than removing a duvet cover and sticking it in the wash? I wasn't convinced.

But when it comes to student bedding. I actually think a coverless duvet is a great idea. Why? Two main things.

1. A coverless duvet is quick, easy, and faff-free to get on the bed

Firstly, there's no denying a coverless duvet is quick, easy, and faff-free to get on the bed. And easy is always welcome, especially in the first year of uni, when living independently can feel both freeing and overwhelming at the same time.

After all, there's a lot to adjust to when you start uni for the first time, and learning how to cook, clean, and look after yourself and your belongings can be as big a challenge as the study itself.

Anything that makes that process easier is useful. And whilst washing, drying and putting on a duvet cover may seem simple to those of us who have been managing a household for years, we've probably forgotten that, like everything else in life, it's a skill that took time to develop.

I can definitely remember uni nights when I ended up sleeping under my duvet because my duvet cover was still in the washing machine and I'd forgotten to leave time to dry before bed. As well as nights I slept *in* the duvet cover, because I'd crawled home from the student union too 'tired' to put the cover back on the duvet.

In comparison, a coverless duvet is simple, straightforward, and shouldn't result in any tearful phone calls home when your fresher is struggling to put their duvet cover back on the bed with a hangover.

2. A coverless duvet is easy to wash and dry

Do I think a coverless duvet is easier to wash and dry than a traditional duvet cover and duvet for most people? No. Do I think a coverless duvet is easier to wash and dry than a traditional duvet cover and duvet for a *student*? Yes.

Why? Because there are a few particular nuances to a student lifestyle that I think mean a coverless duvet can really work.

First, most halls of residence supply single beds in student accommodation, and a single bed works really well with either a single or double coverless duvet.

I wouldn't fancy washing and drying a king-size or super king coverless duvet, but the smaller sizes are much easier to fit into a washing machine, and less material means they will dry quickly in a tumble dryer.

Second, most halls of residence I've visited have dedicated laundry rooms with large-capacity washers and dryers. That's very different to trying to stuff a coverless duvet into your average washing machine at home.

I think that makes a coverless duvet much easier to care for at uni than it would be in your average house.

So is a coverless duvet any good for a uni student? Yes, as long as you know there will be a large capacity washer and dryer to care for it, I think a coverless duvet is a great idea for student bedding.

Even better, as this trend continues to grow, there are now more and more options on the market, and that means more choice of colour and pattern for a student to make their room feel like their own.
