Martin and Shirlie Kemp took to Instagram to reveal their latest growing endeavour - grapevines. And while this may sound like a more unusual choice of fruit to grow in the UK, with the right amount of care, it is entirely possible to grow your own bunches.

While grapes may seem like an odd choice considering the UK climate, they’re actually one of the best fruits to grow in pots and one of the best plants to grow up a pergola. Plus, with the UK’s climate predicted to get warmer due to climate change, gardeners may start to find growing and harvesting grapes easier and more plentiful.

The Kemps planted their new vines against a trellis structure this week. So, I asked a garden expert how it would fare, and whether we could do the same at home.

Martin and Shirlie Kemp frequently share glimpses of their gorgeous garden on their home’s Instagram account @maisonnumber9. On 15 September, the couple posted their latest endeavour, growing grapes, stating: ‘I know it’s a bit late to plant grapes, but they’re for next year.’

‘It’s absolutely fine to plant grapes at this time of year, as the soil is still warm and isn’t yet waterlogged. If we have a relatively dry winter, you can successfully plant throughout the season, but planting now gives the vines a good opportunity to establish themselves, and they should have a good chance of success,’ says Amber Tunney, Plant Buyer at Cherry Lane Garden Centres.

Amber also points to the trellis they’re growing the grapes on, stating that it will make a lovely garden display once established. However, she does warn that grapes can quickly become heavy, which may topple a delicate trellis.

‘A trellis is a lovely way to start the vines off and can create a really attractive feature. However, grapevines can fill out quite quickly, so over time they may find the structure becomes too small to support the fruit and weight of the vine,’ she says.

‘During the summer, some foliage will also need to be removed to allow enough sunlight to reach the grapes and help them ripen. This can be easier to manage when vines are grown against a wire or wall, or over a larger trellis structure such as a gazebo.’

Can you grow grapes in the UK's climate?

In the video, Shirlie can be heard stating that they were planting the grapes in a south-facing area of the garden that gets plenty of sunlight. ‘It gets so hot,’ she says. And this is ideal as grapes prefer a south- or west-facing warm spot in your garden. They also need fertile, free-draining soil and plenty of space to grow and climb.

Plus, with meteorologists predicting the UK will see hotter summers, gardeners may find it easier to grow grapes with warmer temperatures predicted to be the new normal.

‘Hotter summers can make it easier for grapes to ripen successfully in the UK. However, a sheltered position is still important, as extremely hot conditions can also put the plants under stress,’ says Amber

‘Provided winters don’t become significantly harsher, hardier grape varieties should continue to cope well with UK winters. Choosing the right variety and planting it in a sheltered spot will give the vine the best chance of thriving.’

Top tips for growing grapes

If you want to add growing grapes to your list of September garden jobs, you’re in luck as Amber has some top tips for growing this delicious fruit - whether you want a snack for your fruit bowl or have your own vino on your mind.

‘When choosing a vine, look for a strong, healthy plant and make sure you select a variety suited to what you want to grow, as there are different varieties for wine-making and eating,’ says Amber.

‘Varieties such as Phoenix, Boskoop Glory and Lakemont are good choices, as they have a strong tolerance to colder winters, good disease resistance and can produce good crops.

It’s also important to be patient, as grapevines can take a few years to establish and produce a good crop. In the first year, remove all fruit so the plant can focus its energy on establishing itself and ideally, do the same in the second year. By the third year, it is best to remove a few bunches as they begin to grow so the plant can focus its energy on producing a smaller quantity of good-quality, tasty fruit.’

Looking at the bathroom, one word comes to mind: glamorous. With rich red tones, marble and gold finishes, the space has a gorgeous yet dramatic look - there’s something very ‘Hollywood’ about the space, which I love.

‘It feels very good now, but none of the ingredients are flash-in-the-pan choices. Checkerboard, marble and brass have all been used in interiors for generations, so the freshness really comes from how they’ve been put together,’ comments Grazzie Wilson, head of creative at Ca’ Pietra.

‘The deep wine-toned checkerboard feels much more interesting than a predictable black and white, while the marble brings movement and just enough drama without tipping into ‘look at my marble bathroom’. That balance is what makes the whole thing work. It feels glamorous, but it still has personality, and that is usually what gives a room real staying power.’

And Sophie and Jamie’s bathroom is reflecting a growing bathroom trend - that we want our spaces to look and feel luxurious.

‘Freestanding baths, brushed and unlacquered brass brassware, panelled walls, and marble-effect surfaces are all growing categories for us. Part of it is the influence of boutique hotels and the number of people who now travel and want to bring that feeling home,’ says James Roberts, Director at Sanctuary Bathrooms.

‘Part of it is that the bathroom has become a place to slow down rather than just a functional room, so people are willing to invest in it. And crucially, the look has become far more achievable. Marble-effect porcelain, high-quality acrylic and stone-resin baths, and a much wider range of brass finishes mean the luxe look no longer needs a luxe budget.’

Zoning a bathroom with tiles

You’ll probably have noticed from Sophie’s photo that a mismatch of patterned tiles has been used throughout. And no, this isn't a quirky design choice; it’s actually an excellent way to zone a bathroom.

‘Different tiles can do different jobs within the same room. Here, the checkerboard gives the floor rhythm and swagger, while the marble in the shower feels softer and more fluid, so you get contrast without the two fighting for attention,’ says Grazzie.

‘It’s also a really clever way to zone a bathroom without physically dividing it. You can give the shower, floor or vanity area its own identity and still make the whole room feel connected. The trick is to find a thread between the two choices, whether that’s colour, undertone, material or finish, so it feels layered rather than random.

‘I always think a bathroom is more interesting when it reveals itself gradually. You want a little surprise as you move through the room rather than everything announcing itself at once.’

Grazzie also goes on to say that the checkerboard and marble designs not only complement each other, but help modernise the look.

‘I think they rescue each other slightly. Marble can get a bit grand if you let it, and checkerboard can go full period-drama if you’re not careful. Put them together and suddenly both feel cooler,’ she says.

‘The marble brings all that lovely, loose natural movement, while the checkerboard gives you something much more graphic and ordered underfoot. It’s the contrast between the two that makes the combination feel fresh. The marble stops the checkerboard feeling costume-y, and the checkerboard stops the marble feeling like a hotel lobby.’

How to get the look

‘Start with the floor. A large-format checkerboard floor is the foundation of this room and immediately gives it that classic, high-end feel. Marble-effect porcelain tiles can create a very similar look to natural stone, but with easier maintenance and usually at a lower cost,’ says James.

‘Choose one hero marble and repeat it throughout the space. Look for a veined marble or marble-effect tile with a strong colour running through it, then use it in two or three places – for example, around the shower, on the vanity top, and on a shelf or bath surround. Repeating the same finish helps the room feel considered and cohesive rather than overly busy.’

Grazzie agrees, stating that for this bathroom idea, you need to ensure you take scale into account, too.

‘Scale matters too. A bold floor pattern can take a larger-format or quieter wall tile without the room feeling busy, and then you can soften all those hard surfaces with timber, warm metals, painted furniture or textiles,’ she says.

‘And know when to stop. If the floor is dancing, the walls don’t need to start doing jazz hands too.’

Who doesn’t love a bit of celebrity storage inspo to get you in the mood for decluttering? Well, the latest to catch my eye is TV chef Clodagh McKenna, who’s added a mirror to her built-in bedroom storage, and it’s proved to be a clever design trick for making the space look bigger and brighter.

Integrated wardrobes and drawers are at the top of my bedroom storage ideas, or should I say wishlist. Ensuring all your clothes and accessories have a home, without looking too bulky or taking up too much space.

Having said that, Clodagh’s immense amount of built-in storage had the potential to dominate the room, and this is why the mirror is so clever. Not only does it make the room look bigger, but it breaks up the wall of storage for a considered, luxe look - making it a great example to follow, especially in small bedrooms.

I’ve used Clodagh McKenna’s home as a source of inspiration for some time now. From her use of dried lavender in her kitchen to her gorgeous garden pub, her wonderful rustic style is both cosy and homely, making it a perfect autumnal example to follow.

And her bedroom storage, which is of course painted in her signature green colourway, is proof that you can opt for both style and practicality.

‘Building a dressing-table zone or additional storage into the wardrobe run is one of the best moves you can make in a bedroom. It treats the wardrobe as a room rather than a wall, and the freestanding dressing table that usually clutters the room disappears entirely,’ says Philipp Nagel, director of Neatsmith.

‘The mirror is framed in the same shaker beading as the doors, so it reads as part of the cabinetry rather than as an addition. Warm LED’s make more difference than people expect. The advice for anyone planning something similar is simple: design this space first and the wardrobe around it, not the other way around.’

What Clodagh has done well is position her mirror to break up what would otherwise be a block wall of storage. The mirror, in turn, makes the room feel brighter and look bigger, compensating for the large amount of storage on offer, which could have looked clunky otherwise.

‘Integrating a mirror into the cabinetry gives the storage a more considered, bespoke feel. For me, luxury in a bedroom comes from balancing that polished finish with warmth and texture. At Reclaim Nation, we love the character reclaimed wood brings - it’s a lovely way to make a room feel inviting and individual,’ says Mark Ward, founder of sustainable furniture retailer Reclaim Nation.

‘It gives you a useful dressing mirror without taking up extra wall or floor space, which is particularly helpful in smaller bedrooms. I’d always consider what it reflects, though – a window or an attractive corner will do much more for the room than a cluttered surface.’

And to achieve the look yourself? Mark says to work with what you’ve got.

‘Repainting existing wardrobes and updating the handles can make a big difference. A generously sized framed mirror nearby can give a similar sense of light and depth without the cost of bespoke work. Finish with soft bedding and a reclaimed or second-hand wooden bedside table to bring in some warmth and character,’ he says.

Clodagh has me seriously inspired to declutter and tidy my own sleep space. These are the storage essentials I swear by, and the things people with tidy bedrooms always have.

‘We recommend incorporating mirrors onto the back panels of the wardrobe along with LED’s as a great way to bounce light around the wardrobe and lift the space. To maximise storage, use all available height and make the most of corners to allow easy access to all parts of the room while creating extra storage space at the same time,’ concludes Philipp.

If you’re looking for ways to upgrade your bedroom storage this autumn, Clodagh’s is a great example to follow if you don’t want to lose a sense of space - in fact, her trick does the opposite, making her bedroom look bigger.

I’m not ashamed to admit that when autumn rolls around, I wait in anticipation to see what Stacey Solomon pulls out of the bag for her seasonal showstopper. While this year's decorated staircase is far simpler than last year’s doorscape, it’s actually a far easier example to follow at home.

Last September, Stacey Solomon’s pumpkin doorscape practically broke the internet and had us all racing to our local garden centre to try and recreate the statement arch. The TV personality has always been a curator of home decor trends, but given she’s in the midst of moving house, Stacey has opted for something more low-key.

Turning her stairs into a beautiful autumn scene, this seasonal hallway idea is actually really easy and affordable to recreate at home. Here’s how you can do it too, according to interior design experts.

As well as showing off her gorgeous dark wood staircase (which is another retro, luxe trend we’re seeing everywhere this year), Stacey adorned her bannisters with autumn garlands, lanterns, fairy lights and of course, plenty of pumpkins. While simple in design, the finished result looks beautifully cosy.

‘I think Stacey's autumn staircase works so well because it's a more considered and understated take on seasonal decorating. Rather than overwhelming the space with lots of colour and decorations, she's focused on layering natural textures and autumnal tones, which feels warm, welcoming and much more achievable for homeowners,’ says Victoria Robinson, trend expert at Hillarys.

‘What I particularly like is how the display complements the staircase rather than competing with it. The foliage creates softness and movement, while the seasonal accents add personality without making the space feel cluttered. It strikes a balance between creating visual impact and maintaining a stylish, lived-in feel.’

How to get the look

If you’re feeling inspired by Stacey’s handiwork, the good news is that it is incredibly easy to recreate.

‘You really don't need to spend a fortune to recreate this look. A simple autumn garland running along the handrail or around the base of the bannister is a great starting point. As Stacey has done, adding a wreath at the top of the stairs is also a clever way to draw the eye upwards and make the whole display feel more considered,’ says Natalie Evans, founder and CEO of home styling and staging company Little Barn Door.

‘At £7.99, the Hinch Home Fall Garland at Home Bargains is a steal, and there is a matching wreath available too. Add a couple of pumpkins or autumnal accessories you already own, and you can create a really impactful seasonal display on a relatively small budget.

‘While it is certainly Instagrammable, some of the individual pieces placed directly on the stairs may not be the most practical choice for everyday family living. Removing those smaller pieces and keeping the garland and decorations around the bannister would achieve a very similar look without creating a potential trip hazard.’

Natalie makes a good point. If your staircase gets a lot of traffic or you have little ones running up the stairs, the lanterns and pumpkins positioned on the steps may not be the best idea. Instead, stick to the garlands and maybe consider a few hallway storage ideas to maximise space.

‘I'd recommend starting with faux foliage garlands, which can be reused year after year. Pair these with foraged branches, pinecones or dried seed heads for a natural, seasonal feel without a high price tag. You don't need to decorate every step either. Concentrating your styling along the bannister and adding a few carefully placed accents can create the same cosy autumn effect while keeping costs down,’ adds Victoria.

Autumnal decorating ideas don’t have to be overly showy or dramatic to make an impact. As Stacey has proven, a simple garland and a few fairy lights go a long way.

Actor Jacqueline Jossa has paired neutral with neutral by painting the doors in her home a warm beige shade. Experts say it is an ideal colour choice to invite cosiness to your home this autumn.

Jacqueline, best known for her role as Lauren Branning on EastEnders, has also racked up a huge following online, where she shares glimpses of her home and family life. And despite beige being out for 2026, her painted doors are making a serious case for a beige revival.

Her use of the colour palette results in a home that looks elegant yet warm and inviting. It’s a subtle paint choice, but one that works perfectly with the upcoming colder months.

Despite the fact that interior trends have dictated that beige is slowly being replaced by more earthy shades such as greens and browns, honestly, decorating with neutrals will never truly be out of fashion. And you absolutely should consider painting your doors with a warm neutral rather than traditional white gloss.

‘Whilst a white door feels crisp and classic, choosing a warm beige or soft neutral can really make a feature of a door and soften the overall feel of a room. It is a great way to introduce a touch of interest and warmth without flooding the entire space with earthy colour. It feels styled, but still incredibly liveable,’ says Natalie Evans, founder and CEO of home styling and staging company Little Barn Door.

‘The use of beige on the doors and bannister rail brings a sense of character and warmth without overcommitting to a cottage look. Introducing coloured woodwork into your home can sometimes be a gamble and is easily overdone, but this is a great middle ground. It is subtle enough to feel elegant, yet impactful enough to add character. Keeping elements of the staircase, spindles and skirting white also helps to show off the contrast and stops the beige from becoming too dominant.’

How to use beige like Jacqueline

As Jacqueline has demonstrated, a well-placed neutral can instantly warm a space. Painting your doorways is a great way to embrace beige without overly committing to it.

‘Doors take up much more visual space than people realise. In a hallway you might be looking at four or five of them at once, so changing their colour can warm up the entire area without committing to darker walls. Jacqueline’s shade works because it brings in warmth at eye level while the pale walls keep the space feeling light. It’s a useful trick if you like a neutral home but find an all-white scheme a little cold. You’re introducing depth without suddenly adding a strong colour that you may tire of,’ says Gareth Davies, design director of Classic Interiors.

‘It works because there’s enough difference between them. The doors are a warmer, deeper greige while the walls are much paler, then the white trim sits between the two and sharpens the whole thing up. That layering is what stops a neutral scheme from feeling flat. If the door and wall were almost the same beige, I think it would lose a lot of the definition that makes this look successful. Jacqueline’s hallway shows that neutral-on-neutral works best when you play with depth rather than trying to match everything perfectly.’

Natalie agrees, adding that while working with neutrals may be perceived as a safe choice, it can have a big impact when done well.

‘The key is contrast. Look at the undertones, depth and warmth of each neutral rather than simply assuming beige, cream and white will naturally work together. When you find the right pairing, the result feels classic, uplifting and full of subtle energy. That is what works particularly well here. The colours sit comfortably together, but there is still enough contrast to give the space definition and character,’ she says.

For the longest time, I was so over beige. But Jacqueline Jossa has proved that this hue can look stylish, not dated.

When I sat down with TV presenter, podcaster and influencer Olivia Attwood to get the lowdown on her home, she revealed the one place she shops that makes her bed feel as luxurious as the Four Seasons: John Lewis.

‘All of the John Lewis bedding I've tested has always been great quality. Yes, it tends to be a little more expensive than M&S or Next, and a lot more expensive than Dunelm or a supermarket buy, but you do get what you pay for,’ she said.

‘Egyptian cotton is some of the finest you can get, so I'm not surprised Olivia is pleased with her choice. This set is smooth and silky, so it feels exactly like that luxe hotel experience.'

Kate Garraway’s micropond is proof that you don’t need an abundance of space to create valuable habitat for wildlife. In fact, it’s the small, garden-friendly idea that wildlife experts swear by if you want to improve your garden's ecosystem.

One of the biggest garden trends of the year has been turning your outside space into a flourishing wildlife garden, supporting birds, bees, butterflies, and even frogs and insects as we embrace more natural features.

From this, the micro pond trend is an easy way for people with small gardens, patios or even balconies to embrace the naturalistic trend. And if you were stuck for inspiration, Kate Garraway’s garden is actually a good place to look.

Sharing glimpses of her home life on Instagram, journalist and broadcaster Kate Garraway has also shared videos of the progress of her garden pond - recently revealing it now had frogspawn (a sign of a successful garden pond!).

But what struck me about Kate’s pond was its size, or lack thereof. Nestled amongst the shrubbery of her garden, Kate’s small pond is completed with two wooden ramps to allow frogs and other wildlife easy access to the pond. The pond looks similar to this Amazon preformed pond (£32.95), and is a perfect example of how even a small area of your garden can work to support wildlife.

‘Even a tiny pond can provide a really valuable habitat, especially when you don’t have any other standing water in your garden for wildlife. Microponds, especially those with wildlife-loving plants, can attract an array of insects, pollinators, and birds for drinking and bathing. While larger ponds tend to be better for toads and dragonflies, a micropond is a valuable addition to any garden,’ says James Ewens, wildlife expert at Green Feathers.

‘I see microponds as a mini wildlife hotspot. While you can’t really recreate a wetland ecosystem in a small space, you can create something really beneficial without all the expensive and extensive upkeep of a built-in pond.’

Why is Kate Garraway a good example to follow?

‘Kate mentions that she has frogs visiting the pond in her garden, which is likely because she has the pond in what looks to be a shaded area of her garden. This helps to keep the water cool and can stop the growth of algae. The pond is also sheltered by other plants, helping to keep small animals and amphibians safe from predators,’ says Lucy Taylor, a wildlife expert from Vine House Farm.

As Lucy points out, the fact that Kate’s pond has attracted wildlife to her garden is a successful example to follow. James says it is the placement of her pond that is particularly good.

‘The pond is also tucked away in shrubbery, which makes it even more wildlife-friendly, providing shelter and food for birds, pollinators and insects by mimicking their natural environment,’ he says.

‘The measure of success of a mini pond isn’t solely whether it lures your favourite wildlife, either. It’s whether it has the basic conditions for wildlife to thrive - like clean water, suitable plants, cover and space and access in and out. Kate’s pond is ideal in that it doesn’t have stones or branches blocking the entry and exit points for wildlife - it gives them a safe way out.’

What are the benefits of a micropond?

If you’ve been considering garden pond ideas, but are short on space, a micropond can actually be very beneficial to your garden. And it requires minimal stress on your part - you can even make a micropond in a bucket.

‘A lot of smaller gardens can lack a water source, and a network of several smaller ponds across a neighbourhood means that small animals can safely travel between habitats. Creating a pond does not necessarily mean that you need to dig up the ground, as you can easily build a pond using old tubs or buckets. Water will attract a wider range of species than any other garden feature, and unlike more formal garden water features, wildlife ponds do not require as much maintenance,’ explains Lucy.

Plus, once your pond is established, you’ll even notice fewer pests in your garden.

‘Mini ponds are also a little corridor for wildlife in urban and suburban areas, helping little creatures move safely between green spaces, providing a stepping stone for them,’ says James.

‘They’re also a natural pest control, something you might not even consider at first. A healthy mini pond attracts predators like frogs and beetles that do some pest control for you, managing pests in your garden like those pesky slugs.’

What you need

'The use of warm tones, layered textures and soft lighting helps to create that sense of comfort you associate with a boutique hotel, while still feeling like a welcoming space within a home.

‘There is a real benefit to giving a guest bedroom a hotel-inspired feel because it makes the room feel like an experience rather than simply somewhere for visitors to sleep. Small details such as quality bedding, ambient lighting, comfortable seating and carefully chosen accessories can make guests feel looked after and give the room a more finished, elevated feel.’

The hotel interiors trend

This year, chic, hotel-esque interiors have undoubtedly been trending, as we all look for ways to inject hotel-style luxury into our homes. ‘The hotel look is particularly popular because people are increasingly looking to recreate the feeling of luxury and escapism they experience when staying somewhere special. It also works well with the wider trend towards creating homes that feel like a retreat, with comfort, relaxation and sensory details becoming just as important as how a room looks,’ says Sergiu.

What makes Molly’s transformation so successful is that she’s shown her neutral colour palette can evolve as tastes change, creating a room that is beautifully inviting and cosy.

‘Molly has used pale neutral bedrooms for years, but she’s clearly becoming more interested in warmth and character within that palette,’ explains Blanca Sanchez, director of Halo Design Interiors.

'Her recent bedroom redesigns have moved towards warmer finishes, and I’d copy that evolution rather than copying individual products. You don’t have to paint a neutral bedroom burgundy to make it feel richer because sometimes the problem isn’t the colour itself; it’s that every surface has the same temperature.

‘A hotel approach makes you look at the room from the guest’s point of view. Instead of treating it as a spare bedroom that happens to contain a bed, you start thinking about what somebody sees and feels when they walk through the door.

'The bed becomes the centre of the room, and everything around it should reinforce that. That’s particularly useful in a guest bedroom because it stops the space from becoming a collection of furniture that wasn’t wanted elsewhere.’

How to get the look

‘For anyone wanting to create their own cosy hotel-inspired guest bedroom, I would focus on layering first,' Sergiu advises. 'Start with high-quality bedding, add different textures through cushions and throws, introduce warm, low-level lighting and keep the colour palette cohesive. Curtains, rugs and upholstered furniture can also help to soften the room and make it feel more luxurious.

‘The final touch is to think about the details a guest might appreciate. A small chair, bedside lighting, a tray, fresh flowers or even a selection of toiletries can give the room that boutique hotel feeling without making it feel staged.

'The aim should be for the room to feel calm, comfortable and thoughtfully designed, rather than simply trying to replicate a hotel room.’

Blanca adds that adding an armchair to the room can also emphasise the luxe hotel look. You should definitely opt for one of the best accent chairs for your room, and Molly’s blue and white pinstripe number looks similar to Next’s Chenille Stripe Blue Lilly Armchair (£399).

‘A proper armchair is my favourite because it changes how you read the room immediately. It gives somebody somewhere to sit that isn’t the bed and fills the kind of awkward corner that can otherwise make a guest room look unfinished.

'I’d choose something upholstered and substantial rather than a tiny occasional chair. You want it to look comfortable enough that somebody might genuinely sit there with a coffee, because that’s exactly the detail that separates a lovely spare bedroom from a room that actually has that London hotel feeling,’ she says.

Tiffany lamps are the vintage lighting trend that has been making a comeback over the past couple of years, and Matt’s suits his country kitchen perfectly. Here’s how you can get the look, too.

In a video where Matt shows his parents a copy of his new book, My Dogs and Me, there is a beautiful cream Tiffany light twinkling in the background. In a way, it sets the scene perfectly.

‘Matt's Art Nouveau Tiffany lamp fits really well in his room,’ comments Jamie Moxey, a buyer and lighting specialist at Dusk Lighting. 'The wider space is very country/traditional, featuring a lot of natural wood, rattan and greenery above his mantle. The lamp fits in nicely as an Art Deco touch in a country kitchen, adding a luxurious note to the space.'

Last year, experts told me Tiffany lamps were making a comeback as retro lighting styles, particularly Art Deco, are back in vogue. Not to mention the fact that Tiffany lamps are a symbol of craftsmanship, with their intricate designs adding plenty of charm and personality to a home.

‘What I love about Matt’s is that it doesn’t seem out of place or overly traditional,’ says Julia Barnes, product director at ValueLights. ‘Tiffany lamps can be styled very easily in most modern homes,' explains lighting specialist Jamie. 'Minimalist briefs can use more simplistic Tiffany Lamps as a showcase item to build a room around.

'Alternatively, in colour-drenching or maximalist aesthetics, a Tiffany Lamp can create a jewel tone that echoes the rest of the space. Tiffany lamps have the benefit of coming in a variety of styles and patterns; natural patterns fit biophilic design, geometric patterns to support urban looks.

‘Today a lot of interior design projects aim to avoid mass-produced, flat-pack furniture; Tiffany lamps act as an antidote, bringing a touch of artisanal class to the space.’

Julia agrees, stating that sometimes Tiffany lamps can work better in contemporary homes, rather than surrounded by antiques.

‘If you love the Tiffany look, but your home is more modern, don’t feel like you suddenly need to fill the room with antiques. Personally, I think these lamps look their best when there’s a bit of contrast. Style one alongside a contemporary sofa, a simple side table or more modern furniture and let the lamp be the piece that brings in the colour and character,’ she says.

‘You can also use the colours in the glass as your starting point. Pick out a green, amber or red and bring little touches of that shade into cushions, artwork or accessories around the room. You don’t need to match everything perfectly; just having those small connections will make the lamp feel at home in the space.’

Olivia Attwod has revealed she ditched her air fryer and microwave in favour of the new Ninja CRISPi Microwave, Air Fryer & Oven (£359.99).

Sitting down with Olivia to discuss all things at home, she explained to me that Ninja’s latest appliance had meant she could save space and reduce clutter in her kitchen. And honestly, small kitchen dwellers may want to pay attention as I think she’s onto something.

Posting the before-and-after photos on her home Instagram @mollymaison, Molly explained that while there was absolutely nothing wrong with the space before, she was planning to stay in her home for a long time, so she wanted something ‘that feels completely like us’.

There’s an undeniable difference between the two rooms. While the layout hasn’t changed, Molly Mae’s switch to warmer-toned colours and natural finishes gives the room a far cosier, yet luxurious look.

‘The original bedroom’s cool greys, reflective surfaces and sharper contrasts gave it a sleek, contemporary hotel feel, but it could also appear slightly icy and impersonal. The finished bedroom feels softer, warmer and much more established. The natural timber, creamy neutrals, layered textiles and traditional furniture shapes give it the character associated with the ‘old-money’ aesthetic,’ says Melanie Whetstone, in-house interior design expert at British Bedmakers Get Laid Beds. Melanie also designed the house prior to Molly Mae moving in.

‘The warmer scheme also feels better suited to the proportions of the room. The bed provides a strong visual anchor, while the deeper wood tones prevent such a large space from feeling empty or overly polished. It now feels like a private retreat rather than simply an impressive room.

‘It is also a more tactile space. Timber grain, soft bedding, upholstery and layered fabrics bring sensory warmth, which is particularly important in a bedroom. The styling feels luxurious without being showy, and the combination of traditional forms with a restrained modern palette gives the room a timeless quality. Ultimately, it feels designed around rest rather than display.’

Is Molly Mae a good example to follow?

If you plan on decorating with neutrals, Molly Mae is always a good example to follow. She transformed her bedroom into a space that is both welcoming and screams old money sophistication.

And it’s for this reason that Marianne Shillingford, Creative Director and Colour Expert at Dulux, prefers the renovated bedroom, too.

‘They're both beautifully considered, but for a bedroom I'd lean towards the new design. There's something very comforting about those warm cream tones, particularly when they're paired with natural materials and softer lighting. A bedroom is ultimately somewhere we want to unwind at the end of the day, and this palette creates that sense of calm without the room feeling bland or lacking in character,’ she says.

‘What works so well in the finished room is the layering. Rather than relying on one colour or one statement feature, you've got warm neutral tones sitting alongside wood, linen, soft upholstery and pools of lamplight, which gives the room depth without making it feel busy

‘It's also a really timeless approach to decorating. When you build a decorating scheme around a considered palette and beautiful natural textures, rather than lots of competing trends, you create something that feels stylish now but will still feel lovely to live with for years to come.’

Prue Leith's stunning sunflower and ammi visnaga (khella) display is serving as inspiration for anyone who wants a flower display that looks equally striking in a vase as in the garden.

Anyone who has grown sunflowers this summer will know how beautiful they look both in your kitchen and in your garden. But what has impressed us about Prue’s display is that she has paired them with a second bloom that helps emphasise the sunflower’s beauty even more.

If you’re looking for a flower bed idea that is as simple as it is stunning, this is why you may want to consider planting khella and sunflowers together for next year’s summer display.

In an Instagram post, Prue shared a video of her blooming flowers, thanking her gardener, Philippa Lillywhite, for her hard work over the past eight years as she was moving away to live by the sea. Phillipa then commented, informing followers that the flowers on display were ammi visnaga (khella) and sunflowers. And we’re keen to agree that this makes for a great flower pairing.

‘Sunflowers are bold and graphic, while khella have these light, domed heads made up of tiny flowers. The khella almost acts like a cloud around the sunflower heads. It stops the yellow feeling too heavy and gives the whole display movement,’ says Dr Russell Sharp, founder of Eutrema.

‘It feels quite loose and garden-picked. Sunflowers can easily dominate a display because they’re so recognisable, but the khella breaks up those big yellow circles and gives your eye somewhere to rest. It’s also a combination that makes sense both in the border and in a vase, which I always love. You can grow the two together, then cut a few stems and get the same relationship indoors. Prue Leith is known for using strong colour throughout her garden, so the sunflowers feel in keeping with that, while the white khella gives the colour some breathing room.’

Dr Russel also goes on to explain that this isn’t the only khella pairing that works beautifully in a garden. And it’s great news for anyone who loves to grow dahlias.

‘Dahlias give you that dense, sculptural flower head, while ammi adds air and softness around them. I particularly like deep burgundy or plum dahlias with white ammi because the contrast feels rich outdoors but still looks elegant when you cut it for the house,’ he says.

‘Plant the ammi through and around the dahlias rather than in a separate block, so it weaves between them naturally. Then when you cut the flowers, don’t make the arrangement too perfect. A few dahlia stems with airy ammi around them will usually look much better than trying to cram twenty different flowers into one vase.’

I spotted plenty of pretty geraniums in pots (Pelargonsjuka is a Scandi gardening trend Dawn is a fan of), with small ornaments and hanging plates nestled in between. It’s a simple idea but one that creates a gorgeous lived-in look.

‘What I like about Dawn French’s greenhouse is its personality. It doesn’t feel as though it has been decorated according to a particular trend or with the aim of looking immaculate. It feels joyful, individual and lived-in, which is exactly what a garden space should be. There’s a real sense that it reflects the person using it,’ says Francesca McEvoy, design expert at Crane Garden Buildings.

‘Plants themselves are obviously a huge part of the look, too. Mixing different heights, trailing plants and interesting pots can make a greenhouse feel wonderfully layered and established rather than overly styled. I particularly like the slightly eclectic approach, where everything doesn’t necessarily match perfectly. Greenhouses lend themselves beautifully to that relaxed, collected-over-time feel.’

How to decorate a greenhouse

If you’re feeling inspired to decorate your greenhouse, the best thing about Dawn’s is that she hasn’t relied on trends to decorate hers. It looks like her own individual expression and interests, which is what the experts say you should apply to yours.

‘We spend a lot of time in our greenhouses, whether that’s tending to plants, admiring our crops or simply relaxing. Greenhouses have become an extension of our home, so it’s natural to decorate them with as much consideration as we do our indoor spaces,’ says Andrew White, sales and marketing Director at Rhino Greenhouses.

‘Adding seating such as a small bench or bistro set, soft furnishings for comfort or ornamental features such as vases, storage containers, lights all go towards giving the greenhouse more life and personality.

‘Not only does decorating a greenhouse make it an even more enjoyable place to spend time, it can help turn it into a multipurpose space, whether that’s relaxing with a drink and book, or hosting a dinner or drinks evening.’

Recently, Fred Sirieix revealed he uses his greenhouse as a hosting and dining space, so if yours is large enough, you can definitely transform it into a multipurpose space. Just remember, it can get quite warm in there!

‘My advice would be to think about how you actually want to feel when you’re in the greenhouse. If you want it to be somewhere you can sit with a cup of tea as well as tend to plants, give yourself a comfortable chair. If colour makes you happy, introduce it through pots, furniture or accessories. And don’t worry too much about making everything coordinate. Some of the most charming garden spaces are the ones that have evolved naturally over time,’ adds Francesca.

Water features have been one of the biggest garden trends for summer this year, but while summer is coming to an end, our love for this relaxing garden feature is not. And Monty Don’s tranquillity pond is the latest piece of inspiration that I can’t get enough of.

Celebrities have provided no shortage of water feature ideas this summer, so if you’ve been wanting to learn how to make a water feature, Instagram really has proved itself as a hotspot for how-tos and DIY inspiration.

But while the flavour of the month has centred on solar fountains, Monty’s tranquillity pond is a little more peaceful, and garden experts say it’s a brilliant idea if you want to make your garden more relaxing.

It was only recently that I spotted Martin and Shirlie Kemp’s stunning water feature and wondered if it was the best celebrity example of the summer. But having now seen Monty’s, I think he’s giving them a run for their money.

Positioned in between two flower beds in the Paradise Garden, Monty’s water feature is simply breathtaking. It’s simple in design, yet could equally have stepped out of a fairy tale.

‘It doesn’t feel as though a water feature has simply been dropped into the garden. It sits within the planting, so the edges feel softened and the pond becomes part of the landscape,' comments Blanca Sanchez, director of Halo Design Interiors.. 'I much prefer a pond where plants come close to the water and slightly blur its outline to one surrounded by a hard border because it just makes it feel a bit too contained. Monty’s has an established quality where you notice the water, but you also feel as though it belongs where it is.'

Why you should consider a tranquillity pond

If you’ve been thinking about putting your garden pond ideas into practice, I’m pleased to tell you that tranquillity ponds offer several benefits, from being wildlife-friendly to offering sensory benefits to you and your household.

‘Listening to moving water can lower cortisol levels and calm your nervous system, and trickling water can act as a natural sound barrier against traffic noise or noise from neighbours. How to DIY a tranquillity pond

Of course, if you want to add a tranquillity pond to your garden, you can always buy one. I’ve seen a pond similar to Monty’s for £109 at B&Q. However, if you love DIY products, experts say it is possible to make your own.

‘You can easily create a mini-pond using a container, and line the container with a pond liner if it is not watertight. Add a layer of gravel or rocks to the container, using stones or logs to create varying depths or points where wildlife can climb in and out,’ says Richard.

'When filling a pond, it is best to use rainwater to avoid the chemicals used to treat tapwater. After the pond is full, you can then add plants around it, or include a pump or filter to make the water trickle.'

Dawn O’Porter’s mustard armchair turned the heads of the Ideal Home team this week, but not for the reasons you might expect. This statement armchair is not for humans; it’s for her dog.

That’s right, dog armchairs are becoming an increasingly popular living room idea. In 2026, the ‘pooch nursery’ is booming as dogs are undoubtedly a significant member of any family, and this means more and more of us are investing in stylish accessories for our pets, be it Le Creuset pet bowls or designer pet beds.

Dawn, famous for her work as a writer and presenter, is serving up serious inspiration with her dog’s stylish armchair. So, I asked experts how to make one work in your home.

I first spotted Dawn’s dog’s armchair on Instagram, where she had snapped a mirror selfie. In the background of the image, her dog had made themselves very comfy on the stylish mustard armchair. It even had a throw for added cosiness. While you may think it’s a little extravagant, a pet armchair is actually a stylish alternative to a standard dog bed.

And it’s an idea I think my own dog, Nancy, would love, too. She’s always been a little bit of a diva, and now, aged 14, deserves to have the most stylish place to snooze. I’ve already been looking at this rusty dog couch bed (£33.04, Amazon) as it doesn’t have legs, so I don’t have to worry about my elderly dog climbing up onto it.

‘We’re increasingly seeing what I’d call the “pooch nursery” effect. Just as parents create a beautiful, considered space for a new baby, pet owners are becoming much more intentional about creating a dedicated space for their dog,’ says Natalie Evans, founder and CEO of home styling and staging company Little Barn Door.

‘Traditional dog beds can be bulky and often feel like something we have to accommodate rather than something we actually want in the room. A pet armchair turns that around. It can become a deliberate part of the interior scheme, particularly when you can choose upholstery that complements your existing sofa or furniture.

‘There is something wonderfully playful about seeing a beautifully designed miniature armchair next to the family's full-sized furniture too. It acknowledges what many of us already know: the dog isn't just a pet anymore; they're part of the household.’

As Natalie points out, dogs are a huge part of the home. The National Dog Survey of 2024 found that 99% of owners saw dogs as members of their family, citing that their pooch helped with emotional support, mental and physical health and reduction in isolation.

‘You can buy the most beautiful pet chair in the world, but if it's sitting awkwardly in the middle of the room, it will still become an eyesore, and your dog probably won't use it either. Remember that this is supposed to be a calming, secure place for your pet. Position it in a quieter, lower-traffic part of the room where they can retreat but still feel close to the family,’ says Natalie.

‘From a styling perspective, I'd treat it almost like an occasional chair. Look at the colours, fabrics and proportions already in the room and choose something that complements them rather than trying to make the pet furniture disappear. And resist over-styling it. A tiny cushion might look fabulous for the photograph, but ultimately this is one interior trend where the pet using it has to come first.’

You can’t beat perusing a little inspo when it comes to planning a kitchen renovation, and if you’re in need of ideas, Strictly Come Dancing superstar Shirley Ballas recently unveiled her kitchen’s transformation - and it’s proof that you don’t have to rip it out and start again for a stunning transformation.

While best known for her mastery in the ballroom, Shirley’s kitchen renovation has also shown her ability to renovate a kitchen on a budget – and it’s worth looking at if you have a similar kitchen idea planned.

Instead of ripping out your kitchen and starting from scratch, Shirley’s method is far easier and more affordable. Shirley has shown that a fresh lick of paint can make a kitchen look completely different.

Posting on Instagram, Shirley told followers that she felt it was time to give her home a refresh, and this of course, included her kitchen. Using B&M Specialist Decorators to help with the transformation, Shirley had her kitchen cabinets repainted a fresh and modern shade of white. Paired with her bright kitchen appliances, the end result made for an excellent white kitchen idea.

‘I’m a huge fan of a kitchen that gets a second chance rather than automatically ending up in a skip! If the layout works and the cabinets are fundamentally sound, repainting can completely change the look and feel of a kitchen without the eye-watering cost of replacing everything. Shirley’s is a great example of how a fresh colour can make an existing kitchen feel completely new,’ commented Georgina Burnett, celebrity interior designer, TV presenter and ambassador for DIY Toolshare.

‘The biggest benefit is that you’re changing the look without paying for an entirely new kitchen. Replacing cabinets, worktops and appliances can quickly run into thousands, whereas paint can give you a dramatic transformation for a fraction of the cost. It’s also a much more sustainable approach because you’re keeping perfectly usable cabinetry out of landfill. Sometimes the best kitchen makeover is simply the one you already own! ‘

The main benefit of painting your kitchen cabinets is that you can achieve that renovation transformation at a fraction of the cost. But before you grab the paintbrush, bear in mind that painting cabinets requires a fair amount of prep and may be a job better left to the professionals.

‘Painting a bedroom wall is quite forgiving, but cupboards are touched, wiped and knocked constantly, so preparation is more important,’ says Gareth Davies, design director at Classic Interiors. 'A professional should know how to clean and degrease the doors properly, sand or prime the existing finish and use a paint that'll cope with everyday wear. You can absolutely do it yourself if you're confident and patient, but I wouldn't treat it as a quick weekend paint job. Most of the work is actually what happens before the colour goes on.'

Is Shirley's kitchen a good example?

In short, yes. Shirley has breathed new life into her space using a simple yet effective method. If you were ever unsure of the power of paint, let this be a shining example of how to do it well.

‘I think it demonstrates an important point: a kitchen doesn’t have to be ripped out to feel like a completely different space. Before reaching for the sledgehammer, I’d always ask myself what I actually dislike about the room. If it’s the colour, handles, splashback or worktops rather than the layout, there’s enormous potential for a cosmetic makeover. Change those elements and you can get the joy of a ‘new’ kitchen without the new-kitchen price tag,’ says Georgina.

Gareth agrees, pointing out that if your kitchen is in good shape, there really isn't much reason to rip it out anyway.

‘If you've got a kitchen with decent cabinetry and a layout you already like, look at what can be changed cosmetically before assuming you need to spend thousands on a new one. Paint can alter the entire personality of the room while leaving the expensive parts exactly where they are,’ he says.

‘I'd still be realistic about what paint can fix, though. If cupboards are swollen, badly damaged or the layout drives you mad every day, repainting is really just disguising a bigger problem. But if the bones are good and you're simply bored of the finish, Shirley's approach is exactly the sort of renovation I'd recommend considering first.’

Other affordable kitchen upgrades

When considering a kitchen renovation, it's easy to get carried away and rip it out. But if you've got a functional space, take a leaf out of Shirley's book and work with what you already have.

Trinny Woodall is known for her fashion and beauty empire, so it won’t surprise you to learn that her home wardrobe is what dreams are made of. But while her incredible clothes and accessories are obviously the star of the show, the organisation of her wardrobe is a (very) close second.

Unsurprisingly, Trinny has more space in her wardrobe than the average person. But despite having the space and the means to buy expensive, built-in storage to organise her wardrobe, she’s enlisted the help of everyone’s favourite Swedish brand to meticulously organise her accessories and everyday clutter on a budget. And who doesn’t love IKEA?

The end result really is spectacular, without being out of reach for the everyday organiser. So if you’re looking to take your tidiness up a notch, Trinny can definitely offer some affordable inspiration.

Trinny Woodall regularly lets us glimpse inside her wardrobe on her Instagram page. But in a recent post, she took us on an up-close-and-personal tour of the DIY storage island she built for her accessories and everyday items. And it’s safe to say that the compliments quickly flooded in.

Fans gushed over the ‘inspirational’ island unit and storage boxes she uses to organise everything from old phones to makeup brushes and glasses. Especially since it provides a permanent home for items that often clutter bedrooms and make a sleeping space look messy.

Trinny didn’t gatekeep, either. She confirmed that she built the large wardrobe island using two sets of IKEA units - which look like these KALLAX Shelving Units from IKEA (£50 each). She then topped hers with a bespoke mirror, but you could create a similar effect for a much cheaper price using these Hode Self Adhesive Mirror Tiles (£9.59 at Amazon).

However, it’s the storage boxes themselves that received the most attention, as Muji storage boxes are known for being affordable, stackable and seriously versatile. And while they come in so many sizes, it looks like Trinny has used the 3 Drawer Desktop Storage Unit (£34.95 at Muji) for her setup.

She’s not the only one who loves Muji boxes, either. Ideal Home’s Digital Editor, Rebecca, also swears by these handy storage buys to organise her home - especially as they’re so long-lasting.

She says, ‘I invested in the big drawers and the mini acrylic drawers when I was 23 in my first London flat. Almost 10 years (and 4 flats) later, they're still in use and look great (aside from a little tape I put on them for the last move).’

‘I've used the large drawers to add storage to awkward bedroom nooks, and in my last wardrobe I used them to double the storage inside the built-in wardrobe.'

'However, it is the mini ones that I love the most; they come in a range of sizes and stack neatly together. I have them stacked on my dressing table, holding polishes, makeup, sunglasses and chargers. I've even turned one on its side to make a hairband holder.'

And that, in itself, is what makes Trinny’s setup so inspiring. After all, most people don’t have an entire room to dedicate to giant wardrobes and a huge accessory island.

But if you have a bit of free vertical wall space, nothing is stopping you from turning a smaller single unit on its side to create a very similar storage setup.

Trinny’s IKEA hack is already very affordable, but I’ve spotted similar products to make it even cheaper if you’re on a tighter budget (or want to customise it to your own wardrobe space).

You’ll most likely know Nigella Lawson for her mastery in her kitchen, but let me tell you, her garden is seriously underrated - and experts have revealed the clever colour trick she uses that makes it look so stylish.

If you have an urban or small garden, sometimes simplicity can have the biggest impact on your space, and by choosing a garden colour combination, you can create an outdoor space that flows.

This is exactly what Nigella does well. Using just one colour combination, pink and green, throughout her garden, the result is effortlessly stylish. This is how you can get the look, too.

Here at Ideal Home, we’re big fans of Nigella’s garden. Her magical garden lighting looks like it came straight from a fairy tale, and I frequently wax lyrical about how pretty her pink garden bistro set is. Nigella’s garden is gorgeous. Period. But the one thing that runs throughout her garden’s features is the use of pink and green, whether in her plants or her furniture.

‘What I really love about Nigella's garden is that it shows you don't need dozens of different colours to make a space feel interesting. By focusing on pink flowers against a backdrop of green foliage, she's created something that feels incredibly calming and elegant, but still full of character,’ says Luke Newnes, garden expert at Hillarys.

Nigella seemingly uses only a pink and green colour scheme in her garden. Or at least, that’s the combo she shows off to her followers on Instagram. Her pink bistro set (often paired with a white and green striped tablecloth) is a clear standout; however, this colour combo can be seen in her planting ideas, too. Using pink roses, foxgloves and crepe myrtle, paired with bursts of glossy green, and even grape vines, in Nigella’s pink and green garden, nothing looks out of place or overcrowded.

‘Pink and green are one of those combinations that just seem to work effortlessly. The green tones provide a fresh, natural backdrop, while pink flowers add warmth and softness. Whether you're using delicate pastel shades or brighter pinks, the pairing feels timeless and easy on the eye,’ adds Luke.

Should you use a colour scheme in your garden?

If you have a smaller space, it can be a good idea to use a garden colour combination, whether that’s via your garden furniture or your plants. A cohesive scheme can be used to create a different ‘feeling’ in your garden that doesn’t make your small space look overcrowded and retains a sense of flow. For example, creating a hot border, using yellows, reds and oranges, can make your garden feel warmer and brighter. Pink and green create a space that is calming, luscious and traditional.

‘I'm a big fan of using a colour scheme in the garden because it helps bring everything together. Having a clear palette gives the space a stronger sense of identity and can make the planting feel more intentional without taking away any personality. I think this approach works particularly well in smaller gardens, where simplicity can often have the biggest impact. A more focused palette helps create a sense of flow and keeps the space feeling relaxed rather than overcrowded,’ says Luke.

‘I'm also a huge advocate for repeating plants and colours throughout a garden. It's a simple design technique that creates rhythm and helps lead your eye through the space. In fact, I'd usually recommend repeating a handful of plants you really love rather than trying to squeeze in lots of different varieties.’

How to get DIY a water feature like Martin and Shirlie

Martin and Shirlie Kemp are a celebrity couple that I always turn to for garden inspiration. From their pastel flower displays in the spring to their impressive autumn pumpkin arch, the couple frequently show off their gardening prowess via their home’s Instagram account @maisonnumber9.

And in a post of the couple weeding their garden, I spotted the water fountain, which looks like a fire pit that’s being repurposed into a water feature. I wasn't the only one to take note, as the comments were filled with eagle-eyed fans asking about the steel fountain in their vegetable garden.

‘A fire pit can actually make a great base for creating your own water feature, as can any large bowl, trough or reclaimed container, as long as it’s watertight or can be safely lined,’ says Tom Douglas, Senior Gardening Buyer at Cherry Lane Garden Centres.

‘To recreate a similar look, position your container where you want it and test it for leaks before filling it, as it’ll be pretty heavy once full! Keep the surface of the water relatively uncluttered and let the surrounding plants do the talking. Adding a few stones is also a good idea, as this gives insects and other wildlife a safe way to get in and out if they stop by for a drink.

‘Rainwater is preferable when topping it up, and if you want to introduce a little movement and sound, a discreet solar fountain pump is a great addition.’

Why are DIY water features trending?

Using a £12.99 solar fountain from Amazon, some pebbles and a large planter (I like The Range’s Mari Textured Planter), you can easily create a pretty water feature on a budget that looks high-end. It’s a quick and easy garden DIY project that actually looks good. And considering an actual water feature frequently costs more than £100, it’s an incredibly affordable garden upgrade, too.

‘We've seen a real shift towards biophilic design – that is, gardens that harness various elements of the natural world, fitting into the environment around it rather than feeling separate or distinct. Water features tap directly that, bringing movement, sound and a sense of the wild into gardens that might not otherwise have the space to utilise a full-size pond,’ says Gary Farrell, Director at Nth Degree.

‘It's the sensory side that really draws people in. The sound of trickling water has a calming effect, and there's growing awareness that time spent in nature can ease stress and lift your mood. People also love that they attract wildlife, from birds to dragonflies, which makes the whole garden feel more alive.’

‘I just like to be surrounded by colour. Something's always gotta pop,’ said Clara, talking about her home's interior's.

At £31 per stool (without discount), it can be a little pricey if you need multiple chairs, and there are sets of cheaper stacking stools, like B&Q’s set of six matt black metal stools for £40.99.

However, Habitat’s are the most stylish I’ve spotted online for under £40, so if you like its colourful retro look, I’d strongly recommend making the most of its current 20% discount.

Clara’s home is proof that functional design can be joyful. If you have a small space, incorporating colour via typically ‘boring’ items you can make your space look effortlessly stylish.

Celebrity chef Clodagh McKenna recently unveiled her new kitchen renovation, and there is one small detail that makes the space ooze rural charm - she’s used bunches of dried lavender to decorate, and I’m obsessed.

Rustic, country kitchens are one kitchen trend I’ll always be a fan of, and Clodagh’s newly redesigned space is a masterclass on how to nail the look. In fact, her herb decorating idea looks so good, I’m itching to try it out in my own kitchen.

But before I start stringing bunches of lavender together, I spoke to kitchen experts to get the lowdown on whether this is a good idea to use in your own kitchen. Spoiler alert: it is, and lavender is not the only plant suitable for this gorgeous decorating idea.

How to get the look

If you need rustic kitchen ideas, then you can’t miss out on seeing Clodagh’s new kitchen on Instagram. Featuring a large Belfast sink, rich dark wood finishes, a flagstone floor and open shelving, I couldn’t help but fall completely in love with it.

But hanging from the beams is my standout feature: the bunches of dried lavender. Opting for hanging her cookware from shelves and ceiling beams, Clodagh has spaced out each pot or pan with a bunch of the gorgeously scented Mediterranean plant. The finished result looks like something out of a fairytale.

‘Dried lavender can be used across the entire home, and we often see it hung up in places such as the bathroom or on doors. However, what most people don’t automatically think of is using it in the kitchen. If you have a rail above the worktop, or at the end of your cabinet or island, then lavender, along with other dried herbs, is great at adding scent as well as visual interest to the space,’ commented Ntola Obazee, creative director for Kutchenhaus.

‘It creates texture and provides a gentle scent, which is great for covering old food smells. It also has the added benefit of being a great low-maintenance alternative to flowers, which can be enjoyed for months to come.’

However, there are a few drawbacks to using lavender in your kitchen that you should be aware of before you hang your own sprigs. Kitchens are hot and humid, which are ideal conditions for mould to grow on natural material. And you should also bear in mind that lavender will lose its colour and scent over time.

‘The main concerns are exactly those you would expect in a kitchen environment. Dust, grease and moisture all affect dried flowers and herbs, and once something begins to look tired, it can detract from an otherwise beautifully designed room,’ says Caroline Montague, interior designer, author and owner of Tuscan retreat Villa Sartiano

‘I have used lavender in a stone urn in Italy, where it works well for a short period because the setting feels right and the arrangement is changed regularly. It is a lovely detail when it is fresh, but it does need attention.’

As Caroline points out, you will need to refresh your lavender semi-regularly if you want it to stay looking fresh. But if you’re looking for something lower-maintenance, she does recommend a few different herbs you can try.

‘I much prefer living herbs in a kitchen. A row of pots containing rosemary, thyme, basil or sage brings colour, texture and scent, but it also has a purpose. They are connected to cooking, which makes them feel natural in that setting,’ she says.

Ntola also points out you can hang dried herbs, too, if you want a similar look to Clodagh. Alternatively, you could even hang fake flowers as an even lower-maintenance look.

‘Sage, rosemary and thyme all dry beautifully. If you want to create a little more texture and personality in your kitchen, you could easily add in alternative bunches to give variation and interest to the space. They each give off their own unique scent, and the different leaves give variation to each bunch,’ she suggests.

While Clodagh’s lavender kitchen may require a little extra maintenance, it is truly beautiful and great inspo for a country kitchen.

Holly Willoughby’s chilli con carne recipe reel has baffled fans on Instagram, with some asking ‘what’s that thing on the wall?’ in the background of her video in her kitchen.

If you’re one of the confused, don’t worry, you’ve landed in the right place, and Holly’s unusual contraption has actually been a pretty big kitchen trend for the past few years, as celebrities and influencers have hopped on the country kitchen trend.

I won’t keep you in suspense any longer. What Holly has is a pot filler, and while traditionally you spot these in a working professional kitchen, they’re becoming more and more popular in domestic homes. Here’s why.

Holly frequently shares glimpses of her personal life and home across social media, so sharing one of her recipes is not unusual. And eagle-eyed fans were quick to offer their own cooking suggestions and, of course, praise her kitchen. But one comment in particular stood out to us.

‘What’s that thing on the wall?’

While we’ve established it is a pot filler, it’s time to get into exactly what it means and how a pot filler can impact your kitchen. In short, a pot filler is a tap that sits above your oven, so you don’t have to lug heavy pots of water from your sink to your stove, thus making the cooking process easier and more efficient.

‘The pot filler remains a functional kitchen update for anyone who loves to cook from home. ‘Pot fillers have definitely become more visible this year, especially as people are putting more focus on making kitchens work better for how they actually cook. It's a feature lots of people haven't really seen before either, so videos on social media (like Holly's) tend to gain a bit of attention,' says Dean Harper, chef at Harper Fine Dining.

'It's one of those things where you wouldn't think about it until you see it, then you immediately understand the appeal of having a tap directly above the hob. It’s a feature that feels like it belongs in a professional kitchen, but it’s becoming more accessible in high-end home kitchens too.

‘The main reason they’re becoming more popular is that they solve a very specific cooking problem. If you regularly cook things like pasta, soups, stews, sauces, or large batches of food, moving a heavy pot full of water from the sink to the hob can be awkward. A pot filler removes that step by allowing you to fill the pan exactly where you’re going to cook.’

The main reason people invest in pot fillers is that they make cooking easier and more efficient. They also make a kitchen look instantly ‘high-end’ so it’s easy to see how the aesthetics of a pot filler can play into the decision to include one in your kitchen renovation.

Pot fillers have been a fairly US-centric trend, due to the fact that UK kitchens tend to be on the smaller side. But if you’re planning a kitchen renovation, they are a great way to elevate your space and make it look more expensive. It’s also more affordable to fit one during a renovation.

‘If you’re fitting one during a kitchen renovation, it’s much easier because the walls are already being worked on. Retrofitting one into an existing kitchen can cost more because a plumber may need to access pipework behind the wall,’ explains Dean.

‘The tap itself can range from around £100 for a basic model to several hundred pounds or more for higher-end versions. Installation costs vary depending on the complexity, but homeowners should expect to budget several hundred pounds for professional fitting. It’s important to use a qualified plumber because a leak behind a wall can cause significant damage if the fitting isn’t done properly.’

How to make a pumpkin arch

However, don’t expect to grow a pumpkin arch this year if you haven’t planted any yet. The best time to plant pumpkins for a Halloween harvest is mid-April to May. But if you do hope to recreate Martin and Shirlie’s arch, now is a good time to start prepping.

‘I can completely understand why pumpkin arches have become so popular in recent years. They transform a practical crop into something really eye-catching, creating a beautiful feature in the garden while making the most of the space available. There's something quite magical about walking beneath a canopy of large leaves and hanging pumpkins, and they offer that perfect blend of ornamental and edible gardening,’ comments Luke Newnes, gardening expert at Hillarys.

‘For gardeners thinking ahead, August is a great time to prepare the area where you plan to grow a pumpkin arch next year. I'd focus on improving the soil with plenty of organic matter, as pumpkins are hungry plants that thrive in rich, fertile conditions. If you already have pumpkins growing, August is the time to keep training the vines, watering consistently and encouraging healthy growth.’

As Luke mentions, if you do have pumpkins growing right now, you can start training the vines and begin to attain your archway. For this, you’ll need some cable ties (like £5.99 green cable ties from Amazon) to help keep the vines in place.

When it comes to training pumpkins up an arch or trellis, I find it's best to start while the vines are still young and flexible. I gently weave the stems through the structure as they grow, helping them find the direction I want them to take. It's important not to rush or force the stems, as they can be surprisingly fragile. Once they're established, they tend to continue climbing quite happily on their own,’ says Luke.

Then, it’s all about ensuring your pumpkin is well supported to reduce pressure on the vines. In fact, a few comments in Kemp's comment section suggest using old tights to support the fruit - and it turns out to be a really handy tip!

‘Pumpkins don’t naturally climb like some other vines, so you'll need to guide the main stems upwards as they grow and loosely tie them to the arch using soft garden ties or strips of fabric. Avoid tying too tightly because the stems will thicken as they mature,’ says Dr Russell Sharp, founder of Eutrema.

‘Once the pumpkins start forming, support the fruit with slings made from old tights, netting or fabric bags to take the pressure off the vines. The aim isn’t to force the plant into a perfect shape, but to guide it upwards while allowing it to grow naturally. With regular checks and support, the arch will gradually become covered with foliage and hanging fruit.

After a five-year hiatus Big Brother, the original and one of the most iconic reality TV shows is back on our screens on ITV. Last night we got a tantalising look inside the famous reality TV house and we were excited to see one of this year's biggest interior trends popping up in every room in the house. 

The home decor trend in question is all things curvy, from archways to curving sofas the new Big Brother house is going to be a sea of flowing shapes. 

Arches and curved designs has been having a serious moment in home decor over the last few months, and the Big Brother house appears to be the epitome of this trend. 

There is the large curved turquoise sofa, where contestants will await their fate on live eviction nights. A large gentle curve taking its cue from the shape of the Big Brother eye logo adorns the kitchen, and a hallway of multi-coloured arches leads you through into a bedroom and bathroom. 

But, it doesn't even stop there, both the giant communal bedroom and bathrooms have created cosy spots to sit using smart curved alcove ideas. Not to mention the arched mirrors on the dressing tables, and circle shapes galore in every room.

The curvy home decor trend has been steadily growing over the last year. We've seen it popping up in the furniture world with Next relaunching the Made.com brand with the new undulating Kooper sofa, and John Lewis revealed that its statement Lozenge sofa has been one of its biggest sellers this year. 

Both the terms 'curved sofa' and 'curved staircases' have seen spikes in searches on Google. We reckon as soon as people catch sight of the new Big Brother House that trend is going to keep growing. 

Curves do have a hidden power on the mind, and are one of the best ways to hush a home, a term that means to use your home decor to create a calm and soothing space. 'Hushed spaces embrace curved lines and fluid organic shapes. Think oversized lampshades, circular tables, wavy headboards, and seats that envelop you in their curves,' says Tash Bradley, Director of Interior Design and Colour Psychologist at Lick. 

The Big Brother house features nearly all of those pieces, making us wonder if the calming curves were a conscious decision to help keep some peace in the famously claustrophobic house. Contestants who survive the evictions will stay in the house together, with little to no privacy for six weeks. While that is shorter than the three months or earlier seasons, it's still a long time to share a bedroom with a group of strangers. 

There is one place where contestants can get some privacy, and that is the iconic diary room which also includes - yes you guessed it - curves. The seat has been designed to look like the Big Brother eye with a post-consumer recycled polyester chair that curves around to meet the neon backing light. 

While we can't wait to get a better look inside the new Big Brother House, the reveal has already got the internet in a spin. Some have accused the show of going 'too much like Love Island.' Other fans have praised the bold modern look saying 'LOVE THIS!!! Looks so modern, great job.'

Well, it's many a fan's lucky day as Otis and Jean's iconic home is currently for sale for £1.5 million – and we get a look inside the fan-favourite residence.

The 3-bed penthouse has us swooning with its not-so-quiet luxury interiors and home decor that are strikingly prominent throughout the living room, bedrooms, and bathrooms alike. Let's just say, it's giving grandeur in every possible way.

Perhaps the Love Actually star had a similar inclination towards the interior trends we now refer to as quiet luxury and stealth wealth, after all.

Bob Dylan, famously dubbed as one of America's 'greatest songwriters', is easily a household name for many – but did you know that he owns a longtime home in the Scottish Highlands? In fact, it's up for sale right now, and we've got an insider look at what exactly he's had cooking up in this glorious estate.

It's not every day you get a tour of a celebrity home, much less a tour of a 60s music icon's home. This stately mansion, known as Aultmore House in Nethy Bridge in the Cairngorm National Park in Scotland has been an extended home to the artist for the last 17 years. Windsor Castle is used regularly for events, weddings, and funerals, with some areas open for visitation by the public.

3. Clarence House

Clarence House stands beside St James's Palace and is the official London residence of The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall. Previously, it was home to Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother for almost five decades.

We've recently heard rumblings of King Charles renovating Balmoral Castle ahead of the Coronation. Located in Scotland, Balmoral Castle has been the beloved summer house of the Royal Family and was said to be the late Queen's favourite place before passing there last September.

Balormal Castle's grounds, gardens, and exhibitions are currently open to the public until the 16th of August, perfect for lots of summer fun for the whole family.

10. Sandringham Estate

Dubbed the much-loved country retreat of the Royal Family since 1862, Sandringham Estate is located in Norfolk and remains the private country retreat of King Charles III and The Queen Consort today.

The estate is open to the public during the summertime, with plenty of other opportunities to relax, unwind, and learn more about the heritage of the Royals.

Mind you, this is only a handful of the many Royal residences to date and doesn't even begin to encompass all the history surrounding each home, but it's a start.

It’s official: Serena Williams isn’t just the GOAT when it comes to tennis – she’s a pro when it comes to her dining room ideas, too.

The athlete – who was famously ranked world No. 1 in singles by the Women’s Tennis Association for a whopping 319 weeks – has shared a sneak peek inside the Miami home she shares with her husband Alexis Ohanian and their daughter, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. And, as you'd expect from a property designed by Serena's sister, Venus, and her luxury design firm, V Starr, it’s full to the brim with inspiring ideas.

While we could spend ages talking about her geometric kitchen island or that chic monochrome colour scheme, however, we want to turn your attention to the dining room. Specifically, the incredible and oh-so-dramatic lighting installation that Serena has hooked up above her 10-seater table.

How can we recreate the Serena Williams look in our own homes?

Now, you'd be forgiven for assuming that a ceiling filled to bursting with spotlights is out-of-bounds to lesser mortals than Serena Williams, particularly as we tend to live in smaller properties than her Georgian-style mansion. 

As it turns out this dining room lighting idea is easier to recreate than you'd think.

Explaining how we can recreate a similar look in our homes, Richard Davonport, Managing Director at Davonport says: 'In choosing different style pendant lights and using them together, you remove the symmetry which instantly draws the eyes to them and creates a statement. If you are unsure how to make the look work, consider using the same pendant in either a different size or colour and then build from there. 

'Stick to using odd numbers of each type of light, and this will give it a more organic look that feels natural. For depth, you can choose different cord lengths to stagger your pendants to create different heights and to ensure that each pendant shines in its own light.'

Martin Waller, founder of global design brand, Andrew Martin adds: 'Lighting is one of the most important elements of interior design as it can completely transform the look and feel of a room. 

'Like Serena, you can layer lighting and use multiple light sources to make a room flexible and versatile. Opt for dramatic pendants as your main source of light and pair with statement table lamps to create an atmospheric mood. Wall lights work well as accent lighting to highlight interesting features in the room, such as art or artefacts.  And choose bold pieces featuring structural shapes, interesting texture or eye-catching metallics to make a style statement, even if the lighting is switched off.'

And Niki Wright, co-founder of lights&lamps, an ever-evolving curation of design-led lighting for every room in the home, offers the following three tips for amateur lighting enthusiasts:

1. Play with height

'Create a layered, ambient lighting effect using low-hanging pendants above your dining table. This will cast a beautifully soft, warm hue over the space.'

2. Experiment with textures

'Brass remains a very popular finish, but we are seeing warmer tones and more patina finishes for 2023. Polished brasses are moving towards a softer brushed brass, with our antiqued and aged finishes proving ever more popular this year.'

3. Consider your finish

'When using metallics in lighting, getting the balance is key. If used correctly polished brasses can really enhance and lift the overall aesthetic of a room. We often design lighting that combines aged brass accents with neutral, grounding textures like rattan and linen.'

Anyone who has ever read anything about hygge will know that ambient lighting design is the quickest, easiest way to create a warm and cosy atmosphere – or, if you prefer, instant 'switch off' vibes when you switch your lights on.

'I wanted to separate home from work,' Serena famously told Architectural Digest about her house. 'I love being home. When you have our job, you never get time to relax. So it’s good for me to be able to sit still and not do anything.'

Perhaps, then, we could all stand to learn something from the tennis pro's hyggelig approach to interior design and stop thinking about our lighting as purely functional. Instead, let's try to make it the centre court – oops, we mean centrepiece – of our homes.

The Sicilian home Amanda Holden and Alan Carr bought for €2 for BBC's 'Amanda & Alan's Italian Job' is now for sale and up for grabs.

A look inside the 'Harry & Meghan' Netflix mansion

The 'Harry & Meghan' Netflix mansion, revealed by TopTenRealEstateDeals.com is a Mediterranean-style, six-bedroom home measuring 13,599 square feet, employing stunning ocean and mountain views.

The mansion includes a great regal room with a chandelier and arched windows, a view that fans of the Netflix show will be familiar with, as it's where the couple were extensively interviewed.

The lavish mansion was first built in 2006, encompassing two acres of exterior grounds, which we think would host the perfect venue for an endless vault of garden party ideas. The home's exterior features romantic walkways, year-round flowers, a vegetable garden, citrus orchards, and more.

Additional amenities of the mansion include those akin to a hotel or accommodation housing – so think pool, hot tub, bar, gym, game room, and a theatre. It's pretty fancy if we do say so ourselves, and definitely unlike other house tours on Ideal Home. Imagine all the home decor ideas you'd get to try out in all those spaces.

The mansion even comes with a guest house described as 'picturesque' and 'perfect for any royal relative who might drop by for the beautiful Southern California weather.'

Despite the couple living in Montecito currently, they never actually inhabited the extravagant mansion seen in the Netflix show. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex moved to Montecito in 2020, a town which has long been a favourite escape for the wealthy, where they stayed with Tyler Perry before securing a £12.3 million home of their own.

The mansion is certainly a show-stopper, and we're really pleased to have been given a chance to take a peek inside the house where the magic happened for the popular Netflix docuseries.

Owning a piece of your favourite band's iconic history is the dream of many music fans – but how about owning a property previously owned by one of the most famous bands in the world?

If you've got close to $4 million (£3.2million) to drop, you could be the proud new owners of a sprawling waterfront estate in Florida, reportedly once owned by ABBA.

The home, built in 1982, is located in the upmarket island community of Tierra Verde in Florida, and was, apparently, originally bought for the Swedish four-piece to escape to during the cold London winters.

The setting of this $3.95million listing couldn't be any more picturesque – sat on the edge of Tampa Bay, and nestled within a small waterfront community, it was likely a haven of relaxation for the musical foursome.

Inside the former ABBA house

Inside, the 6-bed, 4-bath home needs a bit of an overhaul – but we reckon the stunning waterside views and pretty surroundings are more than enough to make up for that.

The views from the pool, located on the pool deck, are certainly pretty spectacular, especially as the Floridian sun sets across the water. And while it's been many years since ABBA used the 4,527 sq. ft. property as a base, their influences are still clear to see.

The design of the home – which the estate agent describes as 'suspended in time' – was inspired by traditional Swedish longhouses, evidenced in the long, slightly more narrow look it upholds to this day.

Internally, the Scandi-style decor is also evident (see our Scandi kitchen ideas for more inspo), with a wood-panelled ceiling and a built-in hot tub in the 'Florida room' – yes, really!

It might be looking a little 'coastal grandma' right now but the main living room has loads of potential with luxuriously high ceilings and a large stone fireplace that dominates the space.

Throughout the rest of the home, the current decor is minimal and simple, if slightly dated. The lower floor of the open, two-storey living space leads onto a darker, all-wood kitchen, while upstairs, there's a fairly spacious office room.

Interestingly, the home is divided into two identical 'mirrored' floor plans – each of the two sides have a downstairs master suite, a loft area and two bedrooms with a Jack-and-Jill bathroom.

The bedrooms and bathrooms are spacious but in need of an update. However, the views more than compensate for that!

There have been some recent upgrades from the current owners however; a new roof with skylights has been added to welcome plenty of natural light, as have solar panels to help its future owners save energy at home. It also has electric shutters, and plexiglass covers, providing hurricane protection for windows and sliders.

Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine and his model wife Behati Prinsloo splashed out $18 million on this stunning mansion earlier this year. But after just three months, it seems they have already grown tired of the place, according to property website Trulia. The plush pad, located in the affluent Holmby Hills area of Los Angeles, is going back on the market. And for $900,000 more than the new parents paid for it.

Rachel often filmed her much-loved podcasts and TV shows from her inspiring shaker kitchen. An impressive kitchen for her to resume her cooking commitments would have been high on her proprieties when house hunting over in Sweden.

At Christmas last year, Phillip shared this clip of the family sitting room, all dressed for the season. As you can see, the Schofields are a stylish bunch, with two inviting sofas in charcoal and navy, adorned with a scattering of cushions in on-trend geometric and tribal prints. Above the energy-saving wood burner, you'll spot four stockings – we presume for Phillip, wife Stephanie and daughters Molly and Ruby.

The Schofields have also gone for neutrals in the open-plan kitchen/dining/family room. There's nothing like a window mirror to make a room seem bigger – although this space already looks generous to us! You can find a similar design at Primrose & Plum.

For decades, the world's most famous Bachelor Boy has chosen to spend much of his time in his Barbados home, entertaining celebrities and taking a break between tours. But now Sir Cliff Richard has chosen to part with the house within the prestigious Sugar Hill Estate... which means we get the chance to see inside.

Known as Coral Sundown, after the coral screeding used to build it, the unique luxury villa has some of the island's best views and sits on a 2.6-acre parcel of land at the end of a cul-de-sac.

We just wouldn't have the heart to sell such a fabulous home, and you'll soon see why...

Indoor-outdoor living is the order of the day at Sir Cliff's paradise home.
