‘Whether your conservatory is a sun-drenched nook, a quiet morning retreat or a place to gather with friends, your intention for the space will guide every choice,’ says Alex Bridgman, CEO of Bridgman, while Rachel says: ‘Pinning down your goals helps shape everything from furniture choices to window treatments. Once you know the “why”, think about the “feel”.

‘Conservatories are naturally light and airy, so I’d lean into that,’ Rachel adds. ‘Light-toned flooring, botanical accents and layered textures (think wicker, linen and pale woods) help keep things fresh but grounded.’

Selina recommends gathering the images and swatches that you like to create a moodboard. ‘It’s also a good idea to draw up a rough layout of where larger items of furniture will be positioned.’

3. Choose the right furniture

‘Versatility is key when it comes to conservatory furniture choices,’ says Alex. ‘Look for pieces that transition well between indoors and out, blending beauty with practicality. Go for comfort, with furniture that invites you to savour the space you have created.

‘While matching sets offer timeless harmony, many people are now embracing an eclectic look. Mix silhouettes, combine materials and pair classic seating with statement pieces, such as a sculptural egg chair,’ continues Alex. Can you reverse sun damage on conservatory furniture?

Prevention is always better than the cure, especially when it comes to sun damage. But if you have some sun-bleached and/or damaged conservatory furniture on your hands, there is still hope. Oftentimes, you will be able to save it.

‘In many cases, sun-damaged furniture can be revived, although the method depends on the material involved. For wood that has faded or dried out from sun exposure, gentle sanding followed by re-staining or oiling can restore much of its original colour and lustre. In cases of minor surface damage, using a restorative wood polish - such as a high-quality beeswax polish - can help bring back depth and shine, especially if the finish is absorbent enough to take in the polish. For fabric, if the upholstery has faded, the most thorough solution is professional reupholstering,’ Yvonne at Hillarys advises.

1. There’s such a thing as too much light

It’s important to carefully consider how you’ll utilise your conservatory and whether screens need to be factored in, such as a TV in a living space or a computer in a home office.

‘The overhead sun on cloudless summer days can make glare a major consideration when it comes to glass roofs, so certain tints or coatings may be required to combat this,’ says Mervyn Montgomery, founder and joint director of Hampton Conservatories.

‘Temperature fluctuations, moisture, and exposure to sunlight can leave some conservatory floors looking tired,’ Mike Whitfield, interiors expert at Lusso tells us, ‘Solid hardwood can expand and contract with changes in temperature and humidity, leading to warping or cracking. While laminate flooring is durable and easy to maintain, it can also be affected by moisture and temperature changes’. 

Instead, Mike suggests porcelain tiles as a conservatory flooring idea. He explains, ‘They’re the better option offering great resistance to heat damage and bright sunlight will not damage or discolour the tiles. They even work well with underfloor heating.’

3. Be careful with wooden shutters

If your budget will allow, it can be very tempting to go for wooden shutters in your conservatory since they not only look super chic and expensive, they’re also sturdy and assist with energy efficiency. However, they’re not always the best option, again because of the demanding conditions of conservatories potentially causing wooden shutters to expand.

‘Whether you’re snuggling up with some hot chocolate in the winter, enjoying warm summer evenings playing games with your doors open, or simply spending some quality time relaxing together, a large L-shaped sofa will play the perfect host for your seasonal activities,’ Caron says.

5. Avoid the space looking busy and cluttered

Your conservatory might have a ton of different uses, an office, chill out area, dining room, playroom… before you know it, it can end up looking jumbled.
‘Clutter immediately makes a room look messy and, even with a very expensive set of furniture, the effect is cheapened by there simply being ‘too much’. It’s really important to make sure that what you buy fits into the room, without looking too big,’ says Mark Stewart, director of Desser & Co.

Think carefully about zoning the space if it’s used for a variety of activities. An office area could be marked with a rug under the desk and a couch can create a border if placed correctly, separating the working and living area.

‘Layer in shades of green in the form of furniture, soft furnishings and accessories,’ she continues.

And if green isn’t your thing, Ellie suggests looking to your last holiday for inspo. ‘There is a lot we can learn from the style of those living in sunnier climates that translates into conservatory design. As the temperatures continue to rise over the summer months, our homes can get particularly warm and humid. But one room where that problem is truly exacerbated is in a conservatory, orangery or garden room. 

A conservatory is often a perfect place to watch the world go by, and for many households, they often double as a dining room. However, when temperatures soar into the 20s and 30s they quickly turn from a pleasantly warm spot to an unbearably hot greenhouse.  All those glass panes are usually the culprit for the magnified heat, however, there are ways to keep a conservatory cool in warm weather with the help of some expert tips. 

How to keep a conservatory cool

‘Glass extensions and conservatories make beautiful additions to our homes. They create extra space and flood our rooms with natural light. But come summer, these spaces are at risk of overheating,’ says Yvonne Keal, Senior Product Manager at Hillarys.

Whether you choose to utilise one specific tip or a combination of several of them, here is how to keep a conservatory cool in summer.

1. Install blinds

You may have considered installing blinds in your conservatory but it is particularly important to choose the right kind to keep the space cool.

There are a few different options available to you. Venetian blinds keep out the sun while allowing a cool breeze to flow through your conservatory, while blackout blinds ‘offer the potential to considerably cool a home down,’ says Oliver Hudson, Director at Blindsbypost.

‘76% of all daylight entering through a window pane transfers into heat. Blackout blinds block and reflect the sunlight away from a room, rather than absorbing it.’

Then you have pleated blinds. They are, ‘made from a specialist fabric that actually reflect the sun’s rays right back out of the window. This keeps the room cool so you can enjoy your space for longer,’ Yvonne remarks.

Another option is a thermally backed blind. Now, you may assume that thermal blinds are only helpful during the cold winter months to help insulate a room but the thermal layer can actually ‘reflect the heat entering windows,’ according to Oliver.

2. Keep your blinds closed during the hottest part of the day

It may seem counterproductive to close your blinds on a lovely sunny day but ‘keeping your blinds and curtains closed during the day will act as a barricade to the unwanted heat entering your home,’ reveals The Residence Collection’s Marketing Manager, Jo Trotman.

‘The trick is to put the blinds down in the morning and keep them closed, only raising them for short periods when you wish to sit in the conservatory. Once they are raised, the sunlight can enter the conservatory, warming the air inside. This can be hard to cool back down again, so try to limit raising the blinds when the sun is shining,’ advises Rob Smith, General manager of ConservatoryLand.

If you are set on keeping your blinds open to let in the natural light, ‘opt to close your blinds and curtains between 11am and 3pm, when it’s the hottest part of the day,’ Jo continues. ‘When the temperature dips during the evening, open them to enjoy the last of the sunlight.’

3. Apply a cooling film to your conservatory windows, door and roof

If you’re looking for an alternative to blinds, have you considered a cooling film that can be applied to the glass? This film (available from bands such as purlfost), can be fitted simply by applying it to your conservatory windows, door or glass roof, is also rather inexpensive compared to some of the other cooling options.

‘Some film you can purchase will reject a large majority of the sun's rays, including potentially harmful UV rays. The film is designed to reflect and reduce the rays entering the conservatory and therefore reduce how hot the conservatory can get,’ reveals Dave Sadler, owner of JBFurniture.co.uk.

The films can also reduce glare and if you pick a tinted variety, will allow you to see out but add a layer of privacy, as no one will be able to see in.

4. Add air conditioning or fans

Now, this might not be the most low-cost option but adding air conditioning can be ‘an effective way to ensure airflow in a sun-soaked space to keep it cool,’ affirms Rob.

‘A low wall-mounted air conditioning unit is a great choice for conservatories with a full-height wall or dwarf wall. Plus, in the winter, the unit can provide warm air that will help heat your room,’ he adds. Alternatively, the best portable air conditioners are a good retro-fit option.

Adding a ceiling fan can also help circulate cooler air around your garden room or orangery. You’ll just want to ensure that the ceiling is high enough to install one. If your conservatory doesn’t have many or any plug sockets, you may want to add a wireless fan. 

Chloe King, Brand Manager at Duux also suggests utilising your fan in more ways than one. ‘Putting a bowl of ice or a frozen water bottle in front of a fan can create a cooling breeze,’ she offers. ‘But this will only work if you position yourself in the airflow. When the outside temperature is cooler than that inside, try putting the fan in front of an open window to blow cool air from outside into the room.’

5. Consider getting a roof vent to ventilate the space

If you find that keeping your conservatory cool all year round is an issue or is preventing you from enjoying your garden room in the sunny weather, you may want to consider adding roof vents.

These vents are electronically operated, so you don’t need to worry about manually opening and closing them and can be used in tandem with side opening windows. ‘This creates a chimney effect - where cool air comes in down low and then the heat rises and escapes through the roof vent - which is better for air circulation,’ reveals Mervyn Montgomery, founder, and joint director, Hampton Conservatories.

‘Basically to ventilate properly on a hot day you need the cool air coming in low and hot air escaping at the highest point,’ details Ryan Schofield, Managing Director, Thames Valley Window Company.

7. Use light and natural materials to decorate it

‘Your choice in décor is also key,’ according to Rachael Munby, Group Marketing Director at Anglian Home Improvements. ‘Certain fabrics and décor should be avoided in a warm conservatory, such as black fabrics, which will attract the sun and fade over time if they are in direct sunlight day in and day out.’

‘Instead, choose light, neutral hues, bamboo fittings and cotton textures to assist in creating a cooler ambience,’ she adds. ‘Rattan furniture is light and airy allowing air to pass through,’ as well, relays Dave. 

You’ll also want to ‘avoid leather furniture as this can get very hot and uncomfortable to sit on under sunlight, as it retains the heat,’ says Rob.

8. Add plants to help with humidity

‘Did you know that choosing the right plants can also keep your home cool?’ asks Jo. Well, certain indoor plants can actually improve the humidity in the air through transpiration.

‘The plant's transpiration increases the water vapour in its surroundings, ultimately cooling itself and your home too,’ Jo continues. ‘If you’re on the hunt for an environmentally friendly cooling method, opt to add peace lilies and rubber fig plants.’

Why you shouldn’t open all the windows and doors

Now, while you may be tempted to throw open your conservatory windows or exterior door, this can actually make the room even warmer. Much like with curtains and blinds, it’s best to only keep them open during the mornings and late evenings, when it is considerably cooler and then keeping them closed during the hottest times of the day.

‘This allows for additional shading during the summer months and a cosier feel during the winter. However, it's still important to incorporate the correct ratio of glazing to create the desired bright and airy space below - this can be achieved by careful consideration of the aspect, use of glass in the walls, clerestory, and glazed gables.’

The type of glass that you use is also important. ‘Glare is not usually a significant issue when selecting vertical glazing but the overhead sun on cloudless summer days can make it a major consideration when it comes to glass roofs,’ Mervyn continues.

To deal with glare, the glass that is used in your conservatory or garden room can be tinted or coated before it is installed. Tom Mckinna, Designer at Resi explains: 'Ventilation is going to be key for any kitchen that’s connected to a conservatory. If you’re going to be mixing a lot of glazing with steamy cooking sessions, then condensation could be a problem.'

'I would recommend investing in a good quality extractor fan and focusing on window placement in your design. Can you open any windows near your cooking stations? Is there cross ventilation?'

'Make sure your designer is considering these ideas and helping you avoid the dreaded greenhouse effect. Conservatories are basically like Goldilocks’ porridge. Get a little wrong in your design and it’ll always be too hot or too cold.'

The first step should always be to assess what's possible in a conservatory of your size. Larger conservatories with 'rear or low wall space' can fit radiators, explains Lisa Morton, Director at Vale Garden Houses.

However, this isn't automatically an option, especially if space is very tight. Lisa cautions that 'choosing what type of heating you want in your conservatory or orangery will depend much on the space available to you.'

If you're looking at small conservatory ideas, you likely will need to explore non-radiator options.

2. Consider the position of the sun

If you're starting a conservatory project from scratch, then working out its aspect is crucial to choosing the correct heating options. Lisa points out, 'One thing to remember is that a conservatory will gain heat very quickly with a little sunshine at any time of the year. It will similarly lose heat in the evening as fast.'

If your conservatory is south-facing, then it is likely to be warm throughout the year. And you will only need a backup instant heating source for those surprise cold nights. A north-facing conservatory will inevitably always be cold. So, you will need more permanent heating solutions.

When planning, think about what time of day you will be using the space. Conservatory kitchen ideas will need to be kept warm in the morning and evening. However, you will also need to consider the combination of the heat of the sun and the kitchen itself.

3. Invest in underfloor heating

Underfloor heating undoubtedly is the most popular way to keep a conservatory warmer, but it divides our experts on its efficacy.

For Lisa, the benefit of underfloor heating is mainly that it's a 'space-saving solution'. However, she points out that the 'downside to underfloor is that it is not instant heat and will take a while to reach an ambient temperature.'

Ryan Schofield, Managing Director at Thames Valley Window Company, gives underfloor heating the highest praise. He calls it 'by far the most effective heating for a conservatory.'

'As most conservatories have stone or ceramic floors, apart from in the summer, the floors will always be cold and uninviting,' he explains. 'As heat rises & cold air drops a conservatory heated by radiators will have many more ''cold zones'' than a conventional brick-built extension.' 

Ryan acknowledges that many have safety fears about installing a system under the floor in case it leaks or breaks down. 'Water-driven under-floor heating water has no joints under the floor, so can only go wrong or leak above the ground if at all,' he reassures. Meaning the leak can be dealt with the same as any other heat source.

However, if you opted for electric cable underfloor heating instead there are some extra safety measures to consider. 'You must ensure the cables are completely covered with screed and have not slipped in between or over the edges of the Celotex insulation boards,' says Ryan. 

'If the cables are not covered with screed they will burn out, and this can take up to 2 years to develop. A repair is possible but only by lifting the area of floor in question and taking up the screed to expose the damaged cables.'

4. Install window treatments to insulate

Adding in double-glazed windows is a must when insulating a conservatory to make it warmer. However, if your garden room is still chilly after adding in double-glazing, blinds and curtains will help bolster the effect.

Marc Husband, product design lead at Leader Doors, says that 'installing some curtains and blinds in your conservatory will massively reduce heat transfer. So, your conservatory will stay warmer for longer.'

If going for conservatory blinds, experts recommend considering cellular blinds. Their honeycomb-shaped pockets trap air inside and limit heat transfer from the window.

To avoid any drafts and to reduce the heat escaping consider investing in made-to-measure-blinds. They fit flush to the frame.

5. Don't underestimate the power of a portable heater

The power of a portable heater to keep a conservatory warm should not be sniffed at. They are a simple option if you don't currently have the budget for any major installations, or have a small conservatory.

'Many companies still recommend electric heaters. They do work and will heat the conservatory,' explains Ryan. 'However, there is one downside with portable heaters, oil-filled and convector heaters can lead to potentially high energy bills.'

To help keep energy bills low seek out infrared heaters or panels. They heat objects rather than air and will instantly warm you up while consuming less electricity.

Natural wood floors are susceptible to temperature changes. They expand and contract as your conservatory heats up and cools down throughout the day.

How does an orangery differ from a conservatory?  An orangery is predominantly made up of brickwork rather than glass.

Vale Garden Houses director Lisa Morton explains, 'It is in a combination of factors. Mainly seen in the amount of glass within the structure and the differences can be demonstrated in both the roof and the side. In the roof construction, a conservatory will generally have over 75 per cent of the roof glazed whilst an orangery will have less.'

Although the names are frequently used interchangeably, there are differences between a conservatory and an orangery. Conservatories are largely made of glass, including the roof. An orangery features more brickwork and is a flat-roofed extension with large glass windows and roof lights.

A garden room or garden summerhouse, is characterised by a solid roof and walls with generous windows.

When thinking about building an extension, it is important that you opt for the right design for your house and garden.

1. Increase light and space with an orangery

Orangeries came to prominence in the mid-18th century, where, as their name suggests, they were used to mimic tropical climates in which to grow oranges and other citrus fruits.  Kew Gardens saw the addition of its orangery in 1761. 

‘In contrast to a conservatory, an orangery tends to have a solid perimeter flat roof, with natural light being provided by one or more roof lanterns. To apply some statistics, if the structure has less than 75 per cent glass in the roof it tends to be classified as an orangery,’ explains Barney Bell from David Salisbury. 

2. Choose the right design for your home

'Glazed additions can be built to suit any period of architecture if they are guided by the trends and styles of the era,’ says Lisa Morton, director of Vale Garden Houses. ‘Mixing architectural periods would be frowned upon, unless the period of the property is less clearly defined, with additions or alterations made over the years. Here, the house can take a more relaxed approach.’ 

While you may have a specific size in mind for your addition, the proportions of the original property should determine what you choose. ‘A modest house would not befit an oversized conservatory, and similarly, a larger property will require a more substantial structure to maintain a correct balance,’ Lisa advises.

'Conservatories are often warm – almost hot – in the summer, despite all efforts to shade them. Conversely, they can be a little chilly in the winter. These conditions are ideal for a wide range of plants which can be displayed with great imagination and style.'

We asked Kenneth to share more of his expert advice for choosing the best suited plants for a conservatory idea.

1. Look for bright-light plants

'One of the great advantages of garden rooms is that they are usually so well lit. This means that your plants will seldom be wanting for light,' says Kenneth. 'Typically, plants that like bright lights do well in conservatories.'

There are a whole host of house plants that thrive in the brightest of sunshine. Varieties range from taller Ficus trees and sizeable Monstera plants to smaller 'coffee plants' and 'spider plants.

2. Select plants with long sword-shaped leaves

'Dracaenas and Yucca elephantipes are great garden room plants that can cope with cooler conditions in the winter, and they like really good light.'

3. Embrace hardy succulents

'In very bright spots, look for plants that are succulent,' Kenneth advises. Plants that 'have foliage in a compact rosette or reduced to spines (as in cacti), are hairy or waxy. These are all ways to conserve moisture'.

'Hairy succulents trap a layer of moist air close to the surface of the plant and those with a blue or grey waxy coat use it to reflect damaging heat and light – a natural high factor sunscreen.'

4. Display plants at different heights

When looking to display your chosen plants, think about incorporating different varieties to fill different levels within the space. Don't go for all low level plants or all taller trees, as this will limit your overall display and make the space feel restrictive.

Balance the heights to ensure the eye flows throughout the space, rather than focusing all the visual interest on the same level.

'Hanging plants are great, too,' suggests Kenneth.' There is often ample headroom in a conservatory to have some vining plants that hang down, or that can be trained along wires.' For example, you could learn how to make a macrame plant hanger that can drop from the ceiling.

Also consider what conservatory furniture you have, ensuring you have a range of plants that can still be seen from the sofa – not lost behind etc.

5. Look for shady alternatives

'Some plants are quite tolerant of direct light (desert plants, for example). But others are rather more fragile, and their leaves can get damaged,' Kenneth warns. 'Artificial shades are often fitted in conservatories, and these are very useful, but don’t forget that you can use large plants to shade smaller specimens.'

'In more shady areas, you could try Sansevieria canaliculata “Fernwood” or its bigger cousin Sansevieria trifasciata “laurentii”, aka The Snake Plant.'

6. Keep it simple for a mindful effect

A growing trend is emerging for zen garden ideas, where the space uses simple structural planting to create a sense of calm, by being surrounded by nature without feeling overwhelming.

When thinking about small conservatory ideas, look to keep your plant choices limited but nonetheless statement. This potted bamboo evokes a Japanese garden feel with a feeling of zen.

7. Set the scene for a yoga studio

'Yoga is all about breathing and relaxation, using your body to keep you grounded and centred,' explains Michaela Shoebridge. 'By adding a variety of plants as a feature and focal point, you can enhance your practice. Plants absorb carbon dioxide and convert it into oxygen-rich surroundings to create a healthy atmosphere.'

8. Create dappled shade with bushier foliage

'If you want some bushier foliage in your conservatory plant displays, then trees with smaller leaves would be good such as the Autograph Tree or Ficus Benjamina,' suggests Kenneth. 'If these plants are positioned quite high up, they can cast some nice dappled shade for other plants, or people wanting to be out of the direct sunlight.'

But Kenneth does warn, 'They will, however, need somewhat warmer conditions in the winter than plants from deserts and other arid areas.' Meaning they will benefit from moving into a living room area during really cold spells.

9. Grow fruit trees to add colour

Welcome your conservatory space to take on a greenhouse feel with the introduction of fruit times. Used to hotter tropical climates, many citrus fruit trees thrive in the hotter temperatures. Citrus trees will not only provide greenery but also a splash of zesty colour, from vibrant orange to lemon yellow.

10. Soften the space with planting

Use thoughtful plants to break up the decor, without having to add textiles to do the job. Mix rounded leaves with more spiked varieties to balance the effect.

Make your conservatory plant display fit for all seasons by balancing the best suited plants. Ensure you have a variety of hearty plants that can be left in the conservatory during the frosty winter months.

Of course, if you have temperature control blinds or a heating source, the less hardy plant might be ok to leave in the room. Ensure you've researched your chosen plant variety to safeguard its welfare, whatever the weather.

11. Go large for maximum coverage

If you really want to welcome the outdoors in, choose large potted plants that have room to grow, filling the space with foliage. As Kenneth suggested earlier, this level of leaf coverage creates a dappled shade to ensure the room can be used at the hottest times of the day.

Choose plant varieties with extra large leaves, to provide greater shade.

12. Encourage climbers

For a fully immersive garden room design experience, encourage climbing plants to trail down the conservatory structure. If your conservatory structure is a wooden frame you can easily attach hooks to support the plants.

If your conservatory has a UVPC frame, look for plant supports in pots to make the look work with ease. Allow the pot to sit neatly in the corner to give your climbing plant two walls to grow against.

What plants grow well in a conservatory?

'Temperatures in conservatories can get quite high in the summer and drop fairly low in the winter,' explains foli8’s Plant Scientist Kenneth Freeman. 'Especially if the room is not used often. Most plants do best under fairly constant conditions. But those from semi-arid regions are, surprisingly, much more tolerant of low temperatures.'

'Mediterranean species also prefer some seasonal variation, so as long as your conservatory doesn’t fall below 10°C, you will have a wide choice,' says Kenneth. 'If you are looking to keep some tender tropical plants in a conservatory, then you will need to keep minimum temperatures a few degrees higher: 15°C at least.'

What plants survive in a hot conservatory?

'Plants from the tropics do well under humid conditions. They have their origins in rain forests where there is ample moisture in the air,' explains Kenneth Freeman.

'A good way to ensure the right humidity, without it becoming too oppressive, is to have an indoor water feature where there is constant movement of water. These can be quite inexpensive, and the sound of trickling water adds to the atmosphere too.'

'Another way of maintaining humidity is to stand plant pots on trays with a few centimetres depth of LECA (these are small expanded clay pellets that can absorb a lot of water) or even gravel,' suggests Kenneth. The high surface area will allow lots of moisture to evaporate around the foliage.'

'This also has the benefit of making the environment less attractive to two-spotted spider mites.' Spider mites are a pest that can run rampant in warm and dry conditions.

'Plants from arid or semi-arid regions do better under conditions of low humidity. Such as cacti and succulents, as well as plants with long sword-shaped leaves. Fortunately, these are generally untroubled by spider mites.'

How do you arrange plants in a conservatory?

'If you have the space, consider creating groups of plants in a naturalistic setting by clustering pots together,' suggests Kenneth. 'Or even creating a larger indoor feature bed. Make use of accessories such as interesting rocks and stones, too.'

'Of course, these suggestions aren’t exhaustive. There are dozens of plants in our range that will do really well in a conservatory,' says Kenneth. 'A lot depends on the space you have available, the environmental conditions you want to maintain and what you use the space for.'

So take these expert-approved tips as inspiration more than anything else – as at the end of the day, the way you’re going to decorate your space depends on the way you’re going to use it.

1. Go for a soft, natural colour palette

A light, soft and nature-inspired colour scheme is not only a good small conservatory idea, but the ideal way to go for a conservatory of any size. For one, it’s because this type of colour palette will seamlessly connect the space to the garden. But it’s also for practical reasons to protect your conservatory furniture from sun damage.

‘Start with a natural colour palette to keep the mood light and fresh – think white, sage green, blush pink, and warm neutrals,’ Lucy at Arighi Bianchi says.

Mark at Holloways of Ludlow continues, ‘I recommend avoiding decorating the space in very dark shades such as black. Not only are these likely to fade in the conservatory, they can also make the room feel smaller and dull the naturally bright feel of the space.’

2. Add natural textures

It’s best to steer clear of synthetic materials and plastics as they can not only become brittle due to the sun exposure, but it also hinders the nature-inspired look and feel of the conservatory that connects it to the outdoors. Instead, incorporate various natural materials and texture.

‘You can easily soften the space with textiles, like throws and cushions, which helps a conservatory to feel cosy and more like an extra living room space,’ says Chloe Barrow, interior expert at Laura James. ‘However, you need to be mindful to rotate or cover them when not in use to prevent sun damage.’

Lucy at Arighi Bianchi confirms, ‘Layer with different textures – jute rugs, linen cushions, and plush throws add instant cosiness.’

3. Don’t forget about lighting

There are so many cool lamps and light fixture currently available on the high street. And similarly to the living room, layering various sources of light is one of the top lighting trends, as well as clever lighting ideas.

‘A mix of lighting - table lamps, floor lights, and strings of fairy strings - adds ambience and gives the room versatility from day to night,’ Lucy at Arighi Bianchi says.

4. Avoid items that can’t handle light and heat

There are certain things, accessories and pieces of furniture, that are best left out of the conservatory due to their materials that would not be able to take the sun and heat exposure.

‘I’d also be cautious of placing tech or electronics in a conservatory. These spaces can get extremely warm in summer, and many devices simply aren’t designed for that level of heat,’ Chloe at Laura James says.

Mark at Holloways of Ludlow adds, ‘The main thing to avoid when decorating your conservatory is any furniture or accessories that can't withstand fluctuation in temperature and lighting. The spaces are open to all elements, much like garden decor, so before adding any decor to your space, consider – would you put it in your garden?’

5. Opt for tiled flooring

While there are various flooring options that can work in a conservatory, none are quite as efficient as tiles, for several reasons.

‘When it comes to decorating a conservatory, don’t overlook the flooring,’ says Ashif Kazee from Roccia. ‘Tiled floors are not only practical – they’ll also be a stylish foundation for the entire space. Large-format porcelain tiles are particularly popular, and for good reason. They help create a seamless, expansive aesthetic that visually extends your indoor living space into the garden, perfect for achieving a cohesive indoor-outdoor flow. Choose tiles in natural tones to enhance the connection to the outdoors.’

He adds, ‘Wood-effect porcelain tiles are a fantastic choice for conservatory flooring. They provide the warmth and texture of timber, without any of the worries about fading, warping, or upkeep that come with a real wood floor in a sun-filled room.’

6. Choose an all encompassing color

Go all out with a bold interior colour – from floor to ceiling and everything in between. It will create a cosy feel in the cooler months and a joyful look in the summer.

'Maximise sunlight and bring warmth to any room using Chalk Paint in Arles,' says Annie Sloan, paint and colour expert. 'A warm ochre inspired by its namesake town in France where earthy yellow ochres are dug straight from the ground. It's the perfect colour to maximise sunlight and add warmth on days when the weather isn’t providing as much as one might wish for.'

7. Dazzle with marble-style flooring

Don't overlook flooring, it's an important aspect to get right and you can either have the same as the linking room from the interior of your house, or, it could be unique and more of a statement.

A floor that reflects a little will help to bounce light around a small conservatory, for this you could use polished stone or a high gloss floor paint if you have floorboards. For extra shine use metallic and glass accessories and a side table or two.

8. Carry your flooring from inside to outside

‘The instant we saw this old rectory with its warm red bricks and large sash windows, a classic hardwood orangery was an obvious choice,' says David Salisbury, Managing Director, David Salisbury. ‘It has provided a part open-plan kitchen with adjacent dining room and also a light and sunny area to sit and relax. The orangery is more solid than a conservatory and feels more like a continuation of the house, especially as the windows are designed to complement the existing ones.'

3 Bright andbeautiful

The owners of this home were keen to create a large open-plan kitchen, dining and living area for their farmhouse, which would let in plenty of light and provide views of the surrounding countryside. ‘A real benefit of a post and beam-style oak-frame extension is that it enablesa whole gable end to feature stunning double-height glazing, to flood the room with natural light, add instant character and provide stunning views out to the garden,' says Mark Jones, General Manager, Welsh Oak Frame.

4 Country ways

Instead of building a fully glazed conservatory, it's worth considering an orangery or garden room with all the benefits of a solid roof. It will helpkeep the space snug in winter, while protecting it against overheating in summer. For an authentic country appearance, this seasoned oak orangery is topped by a lantern surrounded by a brim of tiles in shades of warm terracotta that co-ordinate with the brickwork. 5 Heritage choice

‘In this instance the family needed a large multipurpose room which connected to their beautiful garden but was also sympathetic to their listed property,' says Merry Albright, Marketing Manager, Border Oak.‘We adopted a "barn style" approach, adding generous amounts of glass, natural clay tiles, weatherboarding and a vaulted ceiling. A green oak frame is ideal for extending heritage or listed buildings, because itis a self-supporting structure so you don't need to interfere with the main building too much.'

6 Glass act

Soaring rooflines provide the wow factor, but this design is practical too, with glazing that counteracts the heat build-up in summer and underfloor heating for the chillier winter months. ‘For comfort all year round, soft coat low-emissivity glass improves insulation and should be the minimum specification,' says Rawden Rogerson, Managing Director, Bartholomew Glass. ‘It can be supplemented with upgradessuch as tinted solar control glazing, which reduces glare. Using argon gas within double or triple glazed units should also help to reduce your heating bills.'

7 Garden views

A veranda solves the issue of adding a conservatory to this home, where the garden is at a lower level than the living area. ‘This clever design is a lovely example of how to create a harmonious new addition to a home,' says Jane Hindmarch, Marketing Manager, Vale Garden Houses. ‘The veranda supports were designed to match those on a balcony on the main house and the detail on the conservatory glazing,with applied leadwork on the top panels, matches the original glazing.'

8 Clear solution

‘We designed this conservatory extension for a Grade II listedtimber-framed property set in a wooded area, to extend the existing kitchen,' says Andrew Sale, Architect, Trombé. ‘The simple, lightweight structure combines frameless glass with aluminium minimal frame sliding doors. Other proposals had been rejected, but due to the transparency of the structure and the design mimicking the size and roof form of the existing building, our proposal was accepted as not being detrimental to the green belt.'
