Not sure where to start? I've styled countless dining tables for photo shoots and parties, so I've rounded up the 6 ingredients you need for the perfect NYE party decorating ideas. It all starts with picking a theme, whether it’s a colour or a pattern and seeing whether you have items you could already use that fit the brief. You could opt for sparkling metallics, a smart black and white affair, or go all out with a colourful table, for instance, to transition your Christmas decor to New Year's.

When you’re hosting Christmas dinner, one of the most frequently asked questions will be, ‘For how many?’ The response often results in worried winces. Don’t be concerned; with a few simple additions, it’s easy to ensure that everyone has a seat at the table.

Extendable tables are among the best dining table ideas, as they can be adjusted to suit your needs. However, buying a new table the days before Christmas is not ideal.

Instead, with a simple piece of MDF, any table can be extended for extra guests, providing an instant fix for your dining room.

1. Choose the right piece of MDF board

Extending your table is key to creating the perfect festive dining space.

‘Aim for 60cm table width per person to allow each diner to eat comfortably, without them feeling cramped – you can just about get away with 55cm for occasional extra seating,’ says Amanda Huber, creative director at The Dining Chair Company. ‘The depth of the table should be around 90cm wide (85cm at a minimum), so there is plenty of space for plates, serving dishes and decor.’

These measurements can also be applied when buying a new table or building your own. ‘Also factor in at least 90cm of space around the table for movement,’ she adds.

You may need to use two different sheets of MDF – joined at the centre of the table.

The MDF should be 25mm or thicker if you are going to have a lot of overhang. B&Q stocks MDF in a variety of sizes, including 18mm and 25mm.

2. Place your MDF on top of the table

You can either place the MDF on top of your single existing table or use it to create a seamless bridge over two or three smaller tables. Use a non-slip mat – like these from Amazon – between the board and table to prevent slippage or marks.

If joining two or more tables of different heights, place blankets between the tables and the board to raise the height until everything is level.

If you have a small dining room, consider moving your table into a larger room like your living room to make the most of the available space.

3. Dress with a table cloth

Once in place, cover the board with one large tablecloth to create a harmonious look. We love this Sanderson Cantaloupe design from John Lewis, it's reminiscent of the vintage-inspired tableware trend of last year.

You can then elevate the scheme with some decorative tablescaping, simply dot a few candles and a little foliage in vases around the table for a pretty festive look.

A length of fabric offers a versatile alternative to a tablecloth – hem the edges with a decorative trim for a finished look. Or if your table is too long for a single tablecloth, layer lots of smaller ones for a patchwork look.

4. Maximise space for chairs

If you can, trade individual chairs for benches – doing away with inconvenient chair
arms and sides lets you maximise the real estate on at least one side of the table. It also means people can squash up a little more to make more room.

Garden furniture is a world away from the white plastic designs that were prevalent in the 1990s. If you have invested in more luxurious wooden or dainty metal designs, they can be brought inside and sit harmoniously alongside your usual set-up.

With a little ingenuity and some DIY supplies, it more than possible to ensure everyone has a comfortable seat at the table this Christmas.

I would like to preface this by saying that I’m a nice person. But there is one thing I always judge people for when they're hosting, and that is when it's clear they've put no effort or consideration into the occasion. I’m not rude or mean about it – I do it quietly in my own head, I don’t tell them or show my disappointment. But it's so frustrating as the fix can be so simple/

If you want to avoid making this hosting mistake (and the following judgment) there is an easy way to dress up the table (and beyond as it works for dressing the mantel, console tables and more) that will make it look like you put in a lot more thought than you actually did – and that’s dinner candles, especially if they are pretty and interesting ones.

I’m not alone in judging hosts for not putting any effort getting the space ready for guests. In my opinion, that’s the bare minimum to ask for – I don’t expect perfection, just a hint of thoughtfulness is enough. Trust me, I’ve been at rock bottom before, where I had to bring and cook my own food at gatherings, events with plastic tablecloths and occasions with empty tables, no decor and zero effort.

So if I can give hosts one piece of advice, it’s to show some effort. And if I were to recommend one piece of decor that translates into that effort on the dinner table, it’s lovely tapered candles. Not to mention, they’re a great budget Christmas decor idea.

Pinterest’s yearly trend-predicting report, Pinterest Predicts, has tipped ‘Opera Aesthetic’ as one of the biggest ‘celebration’ trends for 2026. But I’m already seeing this trend being embraced this festive and hosting season – and experts agree that Opera Aesthetic is perfect for Christmas (and pre-Christmas) gatherings.

As the name suggests, Opera Aesthetic references nights at the opera and the elements and textures associated with it, which is why it translates so well as a Christmas decor trend.

I’ve seen it all over social media, from content creator Marco Zamora (@want.zamora on Instagram), who should be the poster child for this aesthetic, to Roti Brown (@rotiibrown on Instagram) and her burgundy Christmas tree decorated with tonal amaranthus and other florals. And it's also the look from the Pinterest Predicts 2026 report that the team brought to life last week at the Pinterest Predicts dinner celebrating the release of the trend report, which I attended.

‘Inspired by the elegance of historic opera houses and the romance of vintage theatre design, the Opera Aesthetic swaps simplicity for spectacle,’ says Sydney Stanback, global head of trends and insights at Pinterest. ‘Think velvet drapes, rich colour tones, sculptural silhouettes, metallic finishes and candlelit corners – all ideal for cosy, festive celebrations.’

Pinterest reports that this trend was based on the sudden rise in searches for terms like ‘opera theatre’ (increasing by 35% compared to last year), ‘midnight masquerade’ (which rose by 95%) and ‘masquerade decor’ (with a 40% increase). Sydney adds, ‘Even though we’ve identified it as a key 2026 trend in our Pinterest Predicts report, it’s already gaining real momentum this festive season. People are craving joy, ambience and a touch of escapism, and this romantic, dramatic style feels perfectly at home.’

How to incorporate the Opera Aesthetic trend

This is a home decor trend that you can really get creative with and use your imagination for. But the starting references are all about the right Christmas colour schemes and the right textures, along with a few extra elements that are easily associated with the opera.

‘Think rich visual storytelling, drama, elegance, and escapism – sumptuous velvets, sparkling chandeliers, decadent metallics, and a colour palette that feels both opulent and welcoming,’ explains Lucy Mather, interiors expert at homeware brand Arighi Bianchi. ‘Embrace the trend through texture and tone for Christmas decor. Start with a rich, jewel-toned base – burgundy, emerald, plum, sapphire or teal – and layer up with tactile accents like velvet ribbons or bows and antique gold ornaments.’

Don’t forget about a dramatic table centrepiece or the right cosy lighting. ‘The emphasis is on glamour, warmth, and atmosphere. Serve up an opera-inspired vibe with standout statement pieces like an oversized sculptural candelabra or even a dramatic floral arrangement – Pinterest highlights red roses in particular – to pull the whole scheme together. Soft, ambient lighting is key, whether that’s clusters of glowing candles or warm fairy lights woven into garlands.’

Sydney at Pinterest concludes with a few more Christmas decor ideas and ways to dress the table to embrace the Opera Aesthetic trend. ‘In the dining room, set the scene with a dramatically draped tablecloth, tapered candles, cut glass and ornate napkin rings. Then finish with vintage-style treasures – from gilt frames to antique-inspired candlesticks – to add character and make everything feel thoughtfully curated.’

I genuinely think there is no better style to embrace this festive season than the Opera Aesthetic – do you agree?

The dining table is where you gather for everything from cosy family suppers to bigger events like birthdays or Christmas, so you want it to look at its best year round. To make sure of that, this is what interior designers say you should never put on a dining table and therefore should best be avoided.

I’ve asked 3 interior designers for their top dining room table ideas, the do’s and the don’ts – and, similarly to the things you shouldn’t put on your coffee table, the overarching theme is simplicity.

‘Less is more with dining tables,’ says Jo Lane, founder of See Your Place. ‘The days of multi-layered, intentionally grand dining table arrangements are behind us – unless you happen to be at a state banquet.'

'I think even a few years on post Covid we are still slightly re-adjusting to hosting gatherings, and there’s been a definite move towards more casual dining tables that don’t feel over-engineered in their styling.’

1. Grand centrepieces

Who doesn’t love a beautiful tablescaping decor, finished with a lovely centrepiece like a crown? I sure do. But the problem with going for large and complicated centrepieces is that they overwhelm and get in the way.

‘Big, dramatic centrepieces look stunning in pictures, but in real life they can block sightlines or make passing dishes tricky,’ says Noor Charchafchi, founder of Celine Interior Design. ‘I prefer pieces that enhance the table without taking over, so the table feels inviting and easy to use when entertaining.’

2. Scented candles

Dotting a few of your best scented candles around the home is highly recommended to make your home smell beautiful and create a lovely ambiance. But the one place that scented candles have no place is the dining table.

‘Keep the aromas edible, not artificial,’ says John Cooper, interior designer and winner of Interior Design Masters season 6. ‘Overpowering scents on the table will steal attention from the food you actually came to enjoy.’

3. Excess of condiments

Of course, you often need salt and pepper to season your meal, as well as the occasional olive oil, vinegar and sometimes even hot sauce. But that doesn’t mean all of the above (and more) need to live on the dining table at all times or be brought out all at once.

‘Excess condiments - salt, pepper, ketchup, sauces, oils, and dressings - all sitting on the table at once can feel messy. It’s usually better to bring them out only when needed,’ John Cooper says.

But when you do bring your condiments and seasoning out, I recommend presenting them beautifully to make the occasion feel special and put together – even if it’s just a family dinner on Tuesday evening.

Just last month, I was at a dinner party where I helped to create a rather sizeable flower arrangement that was used as a table centrepiece but subsequently had to be removed because one side of the table couldn’t see the other. We all do it sometimes…

Once upon a time, it was common to have a dedicated dining room in your home. But alas, in the past few years, we’ve been witnessing the death of the dining room. If you still want to create that same grandiose effect without having the standalone room, this is how to fake a dining room when you don’t have one.

Whether it’s within your living room or kitchen (as that’s where the dining usually takes place these days), these dining room ideas - or should I say dining areas? - will look elevated and sophisticated despite the fact you don’t have a separate dining space.

‘We’ve talked about the “death of the dining room” for years, but in reality, what we’ve seen are re-designs of open plan spaces, where zoning plays a key part of the process,’ says Rachal Hutcheson, national retail manager at Sharps. ‘It is possible to create a chic and cosy dining space in your living room or kitchen, establishing areas.’

1. Focus on lighting

No matter how small your dining space may be, incorporating some stylish and clever dining room lighting ideas to help define the space always works, according to experts. The top tip? Hang a pendant light like this M&S Chloe light above the dining table.

'If there is space for a full dining table, define the space and set it apart from the rest of the room with a large rug that’s big enough to extend beyond your dining chairs,' Danielle at Cox & Cox advises on how big a dining room rug should be.

Kate at The Painted Furniture Company agrees, ‘One of the simplest ways to “fake” a dining room is to create a sense of boundary, even without walls. A rug beneath the table instantly anchors the space.’

This might not be the ideal small dining room idea – again, I should say dining area. ‘Furniture is also a brilliant tool here and a sideboard, console or even a slim media wall unit can be strategically placed to frame the dining area and give it more presence, almost like drawing an invisible border. When choosing furniture for your dining room or dining area - which is mostly the dining table and the seating - it’s important to make sure that the individual pieces work together. And that includes the various forms of seating you opt for - the dining chairs, bench and stools - especially if they’re not matching. That’s exactly where the 4-inch rule for dining seating comes in.

While the likes of the 18-inch rug rule is concerned with the amount of space left between the rug and the surrounding walls, the 4-inch seating rule (whether it’s applied in the living room or the dining room) is all about the height of the seat.

‘It’s about keeping the seat height and depth of different chairs and sofas within 4 inches of one another,’ says Alex Stubbs, Flitch interior stylist. ‘That way, when people sit together, no one feels awkwardly high or low, and conversation feels more natural. It is a subtle trick that instantly creates a more harmonious seating arrangement.’

She continues, ‘It’s a brilliantly simple principle that makes a big difference to how comfortable a space feels. It is one of those design details that is easy to overlook, yet it has a huge impact on how inviting and sociable a room becomes.’

Why should you follow the 4-inch rule in the dining area?

Following the 4-inch rule in your dining space is perhaps even more important than adhering to it in a living room given that food is involved here – and you don’t want to be seated uncomfortably low or high when eating.

‘In dining areas, it helps ensure chairs and benches feel comfortable around the table without people having to perch or hunch,’ Alex at Flitch says.

Magdalena at Barker and Stonehouse adds, ‘In dining areas, you wouldn’t want a mix of chairs with drastically different seat heights around the same table. If one seat is significantly higher or lower than another, it can create an awkward or imbalanced dynamic.

'This rule helps ensure that everyone is seated at relatively the same eye level, which encourages natural conversation as well as a sense of balance and ease. It’s also aesthetically pleasing, furniture that aligns in scale tends to look more cohesive, considered and thoughtfully arranged.’

How to follow the 4-inch seating rule in a dining space

But even though it’s a very helpful tool, as with any rules, you don’t always have to follow the 4-inch rule to a tee. ‘It’s a guideline, not a strict rule and I always adapt to the unique style and function of the space, making sure comfort and flow take priority,’ Magdalena at Barker and Stonehouse concludes.

Last weekend I made the fatal error of stepping into Primark for 'just a quick look'. Of course, we all know that promising to window shop always results in making a purchase - particularly when Primark Home's tableware offering is this good.

I'm a huge believer in a high-low approach when it comes to shopping for homeware. You don't have to spend a fortune on table linens, placemats and serving dishes, particularly if you're just starting to build a collection like I am. While I invested in the Our Place crockery set, these are the only dishes I own so any tableware for special occasions has to complement it.

Luckily I opted for a neutral crockery set which gives me so much flexibility in choosing more colourful, affordable tableware to curate a high-end look for less. This is exactly what I found in Primark. I love more traditional styles of homeware with lots of block print pattern and natural textures, so their edit of 'Coastal Luxe' pieces was perfect.

Laying the table when hosting or even just for special family dinners is so much more than just preparing a space to eat. It provides the opportunity to experiment with decor and really sets the mood for your event.

While I love experimenting with different pieces of tableware together, I also don't have much space in my small kitchen to house it all, so finding pieces that fit together is key. How to make napkin bunny ears

First, take your fabric napkin and fold the corners into the centre to form a rectangle. Then fold it again to form a smaller rectangle.

Secondly, place your egg in the centre of the rectangle and bring the sides of the napkin around the edge of the egg, bringing the ends to the top of the egg.

Then, take your twine, you can also use ribbon, and tie a bow around the napkin where it meets the top of the egg. The pointed edges of each end will look like bunny ears.

As a final touch, take a fresh cut flower stem and fix it to the egg using the twine. And there you have - the cutest Easter table decor in just three simple steps.

‘I was fully prepared for a Pinterest fail, but this Easter bunny napkin hack is shockingly easy. All you need to do is fold, wrap, tie, done. It looks like I tried much harder than I did,' says Amal Tabache, Social Media Assistant for Ideal Home who tried out the hack for us.

‘I had everything I needed already, napkins, twine, a couple of wooden eggs I got from Amazon. I had also been on a walk and picked up some flowers, so I figured why not try adding them, too.

‘The whole craft took maybe five minutes per setting, and it was really fun. Super easy, no stress, and somehow the table instantly looked way more Easter-y. Total win!’

After we posted a video of the hack on Facebook, other commenters were impressed by this easy Easter craft.

While putting up the tree and giving out gifts are often the main focus at this time of year, how you dress your dining space at Christmastime should not be overlooked. You need it to be special, memorable and stylish, yet still practical enough to serve a feast to family and friends.

Many dining tables are also in shared spaces, such as living/dining rooms or open plan kitchen diners – it’s no wonder that deciding how to use the space can often cause a headache.

We asked three experts how to create an impressive Christmas dining space that also reflects you. Here's what they had to say...

Meet the experts

Get the basics right

‘When talking Christmas dining spaces there are two things to consider: this is likely to be the second-most used space over Christmas apart from the living room, so it’s always worth going all-out on festive decoration; and, that you need to think about function, especially when the space is full of guests,’ says Suzy.

‘A great Christmas dining space is all about creating a warm, festive, and inviting atmosphere where guests can feel comfortable and enjoy the holiday spirit,’ continues Debbie.

‘It’s not about filling the space with lots of items,’ explains Suzy, ‘rather, it’s about curating a considered layer of decoration.’ Emma adds, ‘You still want the space to have that wow factor though – somewhere that’s magical.’

‘A beautifully dressed table is all you need, but a console or drinks trolley can be very welcome,’ says Suzy. ‘I also appreciate good lighting – table lamps, floor lamps, fairy lights and candles rather than glaring overhead lights.’

Debbie says that comfy seating is a must, and ‘always appreciated’. Suzy would pick benches for a dining table in a kitchen; ‘They are easier to keep clean and can be dressed with cushions and throws to make them comfortable.’

Work that space

‘Entertaining at Christmas comes down to being practical,’ says Suzy, ‘whether that’s for a Boxing Day brunch, a pre-Christmas drinks party, or the main event. Is your table wide enough for sharing bowls of food down the centre? If not, can you fit in a sideboard, even temporarily, to serve this purpose? Do you have a kitchen island that can be dressed with food for guests to help themselves before moving to the dining room?’ Debbie loves to have lots of décor down the centre of the table: ‘So I find a buffet works better than overcrowding the table with dishes.’

‘If your dining table is in your open-plan kitchen, then draw guests’ eyes away from the stack of pots and pans by hanging an abundance of paper decorations above your dining table,’ says Suzy, ‘making it the centre of attention. And dress any open kitchen shelves with simple garlands, paper stars and mini trees. This will help tie the downstairs rooms together.’

If you’ve a separate dining room, then both Suzy and Debbie agree that you should use your kitchen as a buffet area or for canapés. ‘You can also create a drinks station in your kitchen, so it becomes a hub to socialise in while you continue to prepare food,’ says Debbie.

Time to tablescape

‘If ever there is a time for table linens, then this is it,’ says Emma. ‘Tablecloths, runners, placemats and napkins really make the meal feel extra special.’ Suzy adds: ‘I like to start with a foundation of white linen, it’s the ideal blank canvas to highlight accessories and festive greenery and creates a snowscape-like-effect which is ideal at this time of year.’

‘When it comes to table centres, keep them low. No-one wants to be swerving sideways to talk to someone across the table because a big flower display is blocking their conversion. Instead go for lower displays and more of them. Small vases full of baubles, flowers or candles work well. You can add a wreath around their bases for a festive touch. They’re also easy to swap out for the turkey,’ says Emma.

‘Set the table with the practical items first, ensuring you have enough room for glassware, crockery, cutlery, condiments, and wine and water jugs,’ says Suzy. ‘Once these key elements are in place, you’ll know what space you have left to work with. Another useful tip is to do a run-through a few days – or even weeks – before the event to alleviate any last-minute stress.’

Make it yours

‘If you have room for a Christmas tree, then I’d say go for it,’ says Emma. ‘If not, you can add a small, decorated table tree to a sideboard or windowsill. Wreaths aren’t just for outside – hang one over picture frames, while sprigs of holly and mistletoe are great for trimming the room.’

But for Emma, it’s the personal touches that make the room special, ‘whether that’s beautiful placecards brought out each year, crackers with cheesy jokes and paper hats that never fit, or fun party games played between courses.’

When it comes to trends, all three experts agree this is a space that should reflect you. ‘I prefer to work with my favourite pieces year after year, always incorporating something new to add a unique touch,’ says Suzy. ‘You can’t go wrong by building a collection of quality table linen, crockery, and glassware in staple colours. To adapt a tablescape for the seasons, you can use simple touches such as potted bulbs in spring, lanterns filled with ceramic gourds in autumn, and sparkly decorations at Christmas.’

‘Be adventurous,’ says Debbie. ‘Having a stand-out table can really make guests feel extra special – and you’ll feel amazing seeing your plans come to life.’ Invest in key pieces you’ll use again and again, such as glass charger plates or monogrammed napkins. ‘Why not dress your dining table for the month of December?’ concludes Debbie. ‘You can then enjoy it longer and come Christmas Day you can just take a few elements out to make more space for tableware.’

• Beautiful glassware can really elevate a dining table, so don’t be afraid to opt for something with delicate tall stems—after all, it’s a special occasion.
• Quality table linen is the foundation of a good table setting and is a simple way to make the table look more special.
• Candles are key at Christmas. Whether you prefer natural candlelight or an LED version, they enhance a tablescape, especially if you’re planning to dine later in the day.
• Detail is important. Beautifully written place cards carefully considered table favours, or a playful element such as a game or fun fact can get everyone talking and joining in.
• Personality. This is your chance to have fun and express yourself. Don’t be afraid to experiment, try new things, and embrace the season. A beautifully dressed table will always be remembered.

Christmas is one of those special occasions when we all tend to pull out our best of the best – everything from the best, most festive outfit to the best tableware. But for your Christmas dinner to be special, it doesn’t mean you need to serve it on expensive china or with fancy napkins. In fact, paper napkins will do just fine, as long as you know how to style and elevate them for arguably the most special meal of the year.

As far as Christmas table decoration ideas go, opting for paper napkins as part of your festive tablescape and elevating them with a few easy tricks is a very budget-friendly but creative way of decorating.

‘Paper napkins can be effortlessly elevated with just a few creative touches,’ says Chloe Barrow, interior expert at Laura James.

1. Go for an unusual design

This is not necessarily something you can do with your existing paper napkins that you have at home. But rather if you’re looking to buy paper napkins this Christmas instead of going for fabric ones, then an unusual, creative design will look much more intriguing than a plain one.

Although if you do happen to have plain white paper napkins to hand, along with some coloured marker pens, a pair of scissors, a bit of time and a will to do an easy DIY project, then you can draw and cut out some fun designs similar to the ones below.

2. Utilise them for DIY Christmas crackers

Did you know you can make Christmas crackers out of napkins? And that goes both for the fabric kind and for paper napkins, too. Apart from the actual napkins, you’ll also need empty toilet paper rolls for structure, pieces of ribbon or twine to tie the sides and some sweets, paper crowns and/or other prizes for the filling.

It’s as easy as and you’ll be left with personalised Christmas crackers that will look all the more elevated exactly for that reason. And you can even turn them into place settings with a simple tag attached to one of the ribbons inscribed with a family member’s name.

3. Turn them into bows

The trick of folding a napkin into a bow is more common with fabric napkins – but that doesn’t mean you can’t do it with paper ones. You just need some twine to hold it together instead of the traditional napkin ring. I’m particularly impressed with the hack I’ve come across on Lagerhaus’ TikTok of then attaching the paper napkin bow to the cutlery. Genius!

4. Tie with a ribbon

There are so many ways to decorate with ribbons for Christmas – indeed, there are very few things that a ribbon can’t do. And tying a ribbon over your paper napkin is sure to instantly elevate your Christmas table decor.

‘For a glamorous look, try tying paper napkins with gold or silver bows using ribbon or twine as this is super quick and easy, instantly adding a celebratory and polished touch as an alternative to Christmassy napkin rings,’ Chloe at Laura James says.

5. Add twine and greenery

If luxurious and polished is not quite the vibe you’re going for with your Christmas tablescape and rustic Christmas decorating ideas are more your jam, then you can reflect that in your paper napkin styling.

‘It’s all about those small details,’ says Sam Sutherland, Flitch interior stylist. ‘Simply roll them up and tie with twine and a sprig of rosemary for a lovely rustic look.’

Chloe at Laura James agrees, ‘If you’re opting for a more natural tablescape, swap the ribbon for rustic string or jute and tuck in a sprig of greenery or a small pinecone.’

6. Fold into a Christmas tree shape

‘Fold paper napkins into fun shapes, like Christmas trees,’ Sam at Flitch suggests.

And indeed, folding your napkin into a Christmas tree is one of the best and easiest ways to elevate your paper serviettes, especially as the folding method is exactly the same both for fabric napkins and paper ones.

You don’t choose your family. But you do choose your friends – and very often our friends become something of a chosen family to most of us. So it only makes sense to celebrate the festive season with them too, at least before we all part ways and go to our respective families for the Christmas holiday – and that, my friends, is what many refer to as ‘friendsmas’. So if you are looking to host one this year, I’ve put together a few friendsmas dinner ideas to help you make this get-together one to remember.

This wonderful Christmas idea will allow you and your friends to get together and be merry for one last time this year, perhaps exchange gifts (Secret Santa, anyone?), eat good food, reflect on the year and most importantly, have fun together.

‘While family Christmas is steeped in tradition (and perhaps a touch of formality), friendsmas is your chance to break all the rules,’ says Samantha Picard, Balsam Hill ambassador and founder of @tablescapeluvr. ‘Think of Friendsmas as Christmas's more relaxed cousin. It's that magical gathering before the actual holidays where friends come together to celebrate their chosen family. Usually happening in early to mid-December it's the perfect excuse to exchange gifts, share amazing food, and create memories before everyone heads off to their family Christmas celebrations.’

And this is how to go about creating the most enjoyable and stylish friendsmas for your chosen family if you’re hosting one this season. It’s going to be one for the books!

1. Create a drinks bar

A friendsmas dinner usually has a relaxed, party vibe – and what better way to get the party going than with some Christmas-themed cocktails? That’s why creating a designated space like a drinks bar where your friends can also help making these is the best way to go, whether that’s using a drinks trolley or a cleared console table.

‘Let's spice things up – literally! Create a signature spicy margarita bar with dried lime garnishes and chili-rimmed glasses. Set up interactive stations around your space like a DIY cocktail corner,’ Samantha at Balsam Hill says.

Angel Skillman, Shades of Cool London founder, adds, ‘I also love to create a signature festive cocktail or mocktail alongside wine and beer, something like spiced mulled wine or a cranberry and rosemary fizz at Christmas is always a winner.’

2. Whip up a series of sharing plates

Friendsmas is not a time for a formal dinner with organised courses. Instead, sharing platters passed around the table are more in keeping with the chilled vibe of the occasion.

‘For food, forget the formal sit-down dinner – think generous sharing plates that encourage mingling and conversation,’ Samantha advises.

Angel of Shades of Cool London continues, ‘Friendsmas should always feel effortless and fun as it's a celebration of friendship rather than a formal dinner party. My main tip would be not to overcomplicate it which will lead to stress. This can be done by keeping the food and menu simple, serving dishes that are easy to prepare and share, such as platters, or even doing a potluck-style feast where everyone contributes and each brings their favourite dish or snack.’

3. Have fun with the colour scheme and theme

I love a traditional Christmas colour scheme of red and green. But if that’s not necessarily your cup of tea or if you want to create a theme that’s a bit more playful and out there, friendsmas is the perfect time to do it and experiment a little.

‘If you want to go more colourful don't be scared of combining unexpected colours like greens with pops of pink or gold accents for a festive but fun look, friendsmas is a chance to be playful and have fun,’ Angel says.

The Christmas disco trend is also a great theme to incorporate into your festive celebration with friends. ‘Channel your inner disco this year with mixed metallics! Layer your table like a pro, starting with a shimmering foil fringe runner and mix and match gold and silver place settings,’ Samantha says.

4. Set up a mini Christmas tree for Secret Santa

‘If you've got room, set up a small tree with maximal decorations,’ Samantha at Balsam Hill suggests.

If you’re not spending Christmas day at home but rather are going to stay with family, you likely won’t be putting up your best artificial Christmas tree. But putting up an inexpensive miniature tree like this one from Argos on top of the living room sideboard where it won’t take up any extra floor space won’t hurt either. Especially if you are exchanging presents with your friends, as this will be the perfect place to put them.

5. Use photos as decor

Forget name cards – using pictures of your friends as place settings is so much more fun and adds that lovely personal touch that they are sure to cherish.

‘I love hosting my friends at Christmas time and always hope to make it an evening they won’t forget,’ says ceramic artist Esma Dereboy. ‘This year, I have decided I am going to have photos as name-cards and I am going to handwrite a little note to each guest with a memory from the past year. Something they can take away from the evening as a memory keepsake.’

But shared pictures can be used as decor in several different ways. ‘Another fun idea is to decorate your Christmas tree with photos of your favorite memories with your guests from the past year,’ says Chloe Barrow, interior expert at Laura James. ‘I think polaroids are perfect for this as they add a charming, vintage vibe.’

6. Create a centrepiece with dinner candles

Dining room lighting ideas are very important to get right in order to create the right ambience – and you can always rely on lit-up candlesticks to provide a cosy and intimate atmosphere while also creating a beautiful Christmas table centrepiece idea.

‘When it comes to decorating a festive tablescape, I think less is more. Focus on candlesticks – you can find candlestick holders at all different heights to add layers,’ Esma recommends.

7. Incorporate the bow trend

Bows are one of the biggest Christmas decor trends of this year – but they’re also one of the easiest Christmas (or friendsmas) decor ideas that will instantly elevate your tablescape.

‘Add some drama with oversized velvet bows in rich jewel tones as napkin holders,’ Samantha at Balsam Hill suggests.

But you can adorn your plates with napkins folded into a bow, tie ribbons into bows around the stems of wine glasses or incorporate a bow-shaped candle holder like this one from The Range. There are so many different ways to get creative with this trend!

8. Keep it simple

You’ll thank yourself that you didn’t choose something more elaborate when you’re trying to pack it away to create space for games,’ Chloe at Laura James says.

Avoid overpowering fragrances

When you’re hosting, you, of course, want to make your home smell good. But when throwing a dinner party, the focus should be on the sensational food you cook up and not even the chosen home fragrance should take away from that.

‘Avoid overpowering scents,’ says Niko Dafko, co-founder of Earl of East. ‘Strong, complex fragrances can overwhelm the senses, so focus on subtle scents that enhance the atmosphere without dominating it.’

Clodagh McKenna agrees, ‘I would avoid overpowering the table with strong perfumed scents, as it may throw off the taste of the dishes you’ve spent so long cooking.’

Choose a scent that will complement the food

Much like you would choose the wine you serve based on the meal you’ll be cooking, the same principle should apply to your chosen room scent for the evening. That way, you will create a cohesive sensory experience for your guests that they will remember for years to come.

‘Having had a career as a royal chef before training as a perfumer, I think taste and smell are very similar,’ says Lucy Hagerty, founder of La Bougie, expert perfumer and ex-royal chef. ‘Similar to an accord in perfumery, the gastronomic aromas should mesh beautifully with the fragrance in the room, not overpower, but as if they are one with each other.’

Clodagh McKenna adds, ‘Choosing scents that pair with your menu and table setting is such a fun way of elevating guests’ dining experience. And when it comes to a dinner party, we recommend a mix of both dotted around your home – it’s the perfect addition to the hallway, the living room and even the dining room. Just opt for very subtly fragranced candles for the dinner table.

‘When throwing a dinner party, I recommend lighting multiple candles in the dining room to create a warm and inviting atmosphere,’ says Sarah Bell, founder of Evermore.

Lucy at La Bougie agrees, ‘I light a large three-wick candle and dim the lights. Nothing gives the atmosphere of generosity and warmth better than a candle and I will do exactly the same at the dinner table, perhaps choosing soft floral fragrant candles which I intersperse with some flowers in small jars.’

Zone your home using scent

When throwing a dinner party, the gathering is not confined solely to the dining room – you’re likely to have guests flowing through your home into different rooms, from greeting them in the hallway to chatting to you in the kitchen while you’re prepping the food and relaxing on your best sofa in the living room after dinner. And scent can lend a helping hand at successfully zoning your home.

‘When it comes to dinner parties, I think scents are zonal,’ says Samantha Picard, professional tablescaper and designer of @tablescapeluvr and Balsam Hill ambassador. ‘You’ll want your guests to walk into your flat with a more powerful scent that conveys the ambiance you’re trying to emulate. The scents should be strongest when a guest walks in, and for when a guest uses the loo. For the actual dining room, I would go for something more mild, or even let the scents from the other rooms waft in.’

Lucy continues, ‘I have a secret weapon when hosting friends for dinner. Half an hour before they arrive, I spritz the soft furnishings and curtains with one of our linen spays to give the appearance of a well-kept home. The wonderful room diffuser placed in the hallway or bathroom adds a bit of fragrance to all the well-trodden parts of the home. I like to have a different scent in all the rooms so that your nose doesn’t tire of the same one.’

Reflect the season

‘Scents should align with the rhythm of the seasons, much like our meals and decor. For spring and summer dinner parties, I lean into lighter, airier fragrances—like our Flore candle which includes top note scents of petitgrain, orange blossom. For autumn and winter, it’s all about depth and coziness. Richer fragrances with notes of clove and amber such as with our Ember candle,’ Sarah at Evermore says.

‘I think it’s so important to have nibbles ready when your guests arrive. If they’re anything like me, they’ll want to be fed straight away!’ says Jess. ‘Christmas tablecloths are certainly making a stylish comeback, though some might see them as traditional. Classic Christmas hues like deep greens, reds, and whites are always elegant, though neutral or metallic tones work beautifully for a modern aesthetic. Alongside Christmas tablecloths, ‘Christmas placemats’ are also a breakout term on Google with searches steadily rising since the end of September. ‘While the bow trend was a key feature in last year’s decor, particularly in the holiday season, I believe it will remain strong but evolve in subtler forms this year,’ says Alex Stubbs, Flitch interior stylist. ‘In 2023, bows made a bold impact in fashion and interiors, but in 2024, we’re seeing more refined interpretations.’

1. Choose the right dining table shape based on the room

As much as you might like one dining table shape over another, it’s important to keep in mind the shape and size of the space the table is going to occupy.

‘Certain table shapes just work better within certain room shapes,’ says Kris Manolo, senior category manager at Atkin & Thyme. ‘As a general guide, square and circular tabletops are ideal for square rooms but can look awkward in rectangular spaces. For a rectangular room, choose rectangular or oval shaped tables.’

‘If you are unsure, a good trick is to measure and mark out the shape and size of the tabletop with newspaper then place it on the floor in the position where the table will be placed. This style gives your table an effortlessly eclectic vibe and makes sure your setup never feels too stiff or formal. Plus, you can switch it up anytime by playing with new combinations, so you’ll never get bored.’

‘For those who host frequently, darker colours and patterns for a rug work well as they can help conceal stains and spills over time,' advises Kirsty from Alternative Flooring. 'They also make the room feel more cosy and intimate, especially when paired with warm, ambient dining room lighting.'

Jodie at Brintons adds that this flooring idea also provides the perfect opportunity to get creative. ‘As the floor is the biggest blank space in a room it provides a fantastic canvas to be creative and can really lift a room and inject personality with a bold accent colour.'

While you can select any colour you wish, Jodie raves about red. 'Red is a dynamic colour that can infuse a room with energy,' she says. 'By introducing red accents, you create a lively atmosphere, encouraging conversation and engagement, making it the perfect choice of colour for social environments such as the dining room. To bring warmth and life to a dining room without overpowering the space, consider adding a rich red rug.’

5. Brighten the room with a light-coloured design

On the other hand, if you’re looking for some small dining room ideas on how to open and brighten up the space, opting for a rug style that is lighter in colour with a pattern that’s not too busy is advised.

When it comes to the ideal rug design for a dining room that’s durable enough for the level of use it’s sure to be put through, it’s not just about the type of the weave used – it’s also about the fibres themselves. Sisal and jute are among the top choices for hardwearing dining room rug ideas.

Sisal is an excellent option, as its natural fibres provide texture while offering a tough, long-lasting surface,' explains Kirsty from Alternative Flooring. 'Jute fibres can also be used in a dining space, adding a softer, more relaxed feel to the area, however, it doesn’t provide the same hardwearing abilities as sisal.'

Every rug can benefit from a rug pad, especially when it's been placed on hard flooring.

‘I believe a rug pad for a dining room rug is a good idea,' agrees Liam Cleverdon at Flooring King. 'It can prevent the rug from slipping, holding it in place and avoiding shifting when chairs are pulled in and out from under the table. Additionally, it provides extra protection to flooring, preventing scratches and scuffs.'

Daniel Prendergast from The Rug Seller adds, ‘It will also extend the life of your rug, minimising wear and tear from foot traffic, as well as helping reduce noise by providing an extra layer of padding underfoot.’

Have you ever wondered how big a dining room rug should be when choosing a floor covering for the dining area? We sure have. Should it offer enough floor covering for the dining table and chairs? If so, how will you know just how much space to leave around the table to accommodate this? And how much space should there be between the edge of the rug and the wall? So many questions that need to be answered.

But luckily, our rug experts have all the answers to all of these questions and even more dining room ideas to add on top. Should dining chairs sit on a rug?

First and foremost, let’s get this out of the way. If you’re wondering whether your dining chairs should sit on top of your dining room rug, then the answer is a resounding yes, they certainly should be for several reasons.

‘A dining room rug should be big enough to accommodate both your dining table and chairs, even when the chairs are pulled out from the table,’ says Daniel Prendergast, director at The Rug Seller. ‘Not only does this protect your floor from drag marks, but also prevents the chair legs from catching on the edges of the rug.’

How big should a rug be around a dining room table?

The ideal size of your dining room rug will, of course, depend on the size of your dining room. But also on the size of your table. And there is a specific measurement that experts regularly refer to when choosing the perfect size rug for their dining table.

‘A good rule of thumb is to add around 30 inches to each side of your dining table's dimensions where possible to ensure that the chairs remain on the rug when you are sitting down or getting up without catching on the edges. It's a good idea to measure the dining table and chairs before you buy your new rug,’ Daniel says.

Richard Moore, sales and marketing director at Riviera Home UK, continues with some sizing examples, ‘When selecting a rug, keep the size of your dining table in mind. For a larger table with eight or more chairs, choose a rug around 274 centimetres x 365 centimetres. For smaller, more intimate settings, opt for a smaller rug that frames the table and chairs for a balanced appearance.’

And because the size of the rug is so closely linked to the size of the dining table, the shape of it should be, too. ‘Matching the shape of your rug to the dining table can further complement your dining room’s aesthetic, creating a striking centrepiece that draws your guest’s attention. For example, a round rug under a round table or a rectangular rug under a long, traditional dining table frames the table perfectly and subtly enhances the décor of your dining room,’ Kirsty recommends.

How far should the edge of a dining room rug be from the walls?

Whether you want to make a small dining room look bigger or a large dining area appear sophisticated, a well-sized rug can be of help either way. You already know how big the rug should be in relation to the table. But there is something to be considered when thinking of the dining room as a whole – the 18-inch rug rule which applies here as much as it does in the living room.

‘When positioning rugs, people should follow the 18-inch rule, a go-to in the world of interior design. For rooms large enough, this rule means leaving 18 inches of floors visible around the rugs, meaning they don’t overpower the room while providing enough coverage,’ Liam explains.

But for small dining room ideas that don’t allow 18 inches of spaces, Liam offers an alternative, ‘If you have a smaller dining room that can’t accommodate a rug of this size, I suggest following the 8-inch rule.’ This rule works just like the 18-inch method does but instead of leaving 18 inches of space between your rug and the walls, leave 8 inches instead.

As hosting season is almost here, this is the perfect time to update your dining room rug and opt both for the perfect size and design that will complement your space. It’s no secret that at Ideal Home we Iove Stacey Dooley’s home – but who can blame us when parts of her abode look like they’ve been taken straight out of a Pinterest interiors mood board?! Over the weekend, Stacey served up more home decor inspo as she debuted her dining room painted in a brave shade of green.

Green is currently a major paint trend this summer. The season has been dominated by not one but several trending green shades. So Stacey’s living-dining space makeover, which she revealed on her Instagram, is right on trend.

In response, several fans have taken to the comment section begging to know what paint colour Stacey used. While she’s yet to share this, we’ve done a little digging and with the help of our interior expert, we’ve found a shade that will recreate Stacey Dooley’s new dining room look – (we suspect it might actually the paint she’s used herself.)

What colour is Stacey Dooley’s dining room?

This summer has seen four different green colour trends – some of which are likely to continue going strong in the coming seasons.

‘Green is likely so popular due to its versatility,’ says Michael Rolland, managing director at The Paint Shed. ‘Greens are calming and refreshing and, especially when combined with wood accents, can bring a natural and organic look to your home. For those who struggle with exploring colour, green can be a great gateway colour into the world of more unique design choices.’

And one of those popular shades is pistachio green, which is also currently trending on social media, especially Instagram. That’s also what we’d classify the shade seen on Stacey’s walls as.

‘Pistachio green is a lighter, slightly yellowish-green with a fresh, playful vibe,’ says Sam Sutherland, Flitch interior stylist.

What paint can you use to recreate the look?

It’s no surprise that when she shared a snap of her dining space with the bold green shade coating the walls, many wanted to know the paint she used. And we believe we have the answer.

‘While it’s difficult to pinpoint the exact shade without confirmation, it closely resembles Edith’s Eye from Little Greene. This brand is known for their nuanced, heritage-inspired colours that align with the aesthetic of her space,’ Sam says.

In addition to this, Stacey has partnered with Little Greene in the past when making over her daughter’s nursery. So it’s likely she’s opted for the same brand on this occasion too.

If you too are considering green dining room ideas as your next home project, this shade is a viable option to go for. ‘This green shade is an excellent choice for both living and dining rooms. Its muted tone creates a serene, cosy environment, making it perfect for social spaces where you want to encourage relaxation and conversation. The depth of the colour also adds sophistication and can make a strong style statement when paired with the right decor,’ Sam says.

But green living room ideas in this pistachio-esque shade would also look lovely – as seen in Stacey’s space which combines both a living area and a dining table. ‘In the living room, pistachio green can create a sense of serenity, giving it an inviting atmosphere. Painting an accent wall in pistachio green and pairing it with neutral furniture is the perfect way to add a touch of sophistication while maintaining a relaxed ambiance in the space,’ Michael suggests.

However you style it, just be brave to go for it – as Stacey’s bold move has proven, it pays off to be daring with your colour choices.

It doesn’t happen every day that at first glance a simple home accessory goes viral and sells out almost immediately after it’s released. But that’s exactly what happened when the H&M Home striped yellow tablecloth starting at only £17.99 dropped earlier this week – and went out of stock instantly. So we looked for an alternative.

But boy, we did not think it would be so hard to find one, especially at an affordable price point. Which perhaps explains exactly why this tablecloth is so popular - there are not many alternatives on the market that would match it. And also because it fits perfectly into the current home decor trend of desti-core, emulating the look and feel of holiday destinations in your own homes.

So hats off to H&M Home for creating a product that’s rather simple yet fills a gaping hole in the market. But what should we do until the restock then? As per the brand’s reply to one of the comments on the Instagram post displaying the beauty of said tablecloth, no restocking date is showing for this product as of yet.

So instead, we’re looking to our hosting guru, Laura Jackson, who once famously revealed to none other than Alexa Chung that you can create a tablecloth and napkins from any fabric of your liking. And as luck would have it, we found the perfect fabric on Etsy that looks identical to the H&M Home deckchair stripe print for just £7.99 per metre.

Alternative to H&M Home’s sellout striped tablecloth

‘Deckchair stripes evoke nostalgia and simplicity, reminiscent of seaside holidays and outdoor leisure,’ says Alex Stubbs, Flitch interior stylist, on the current deckchair stripe trend. ‘Their bold, playful design adds visual interest and vintage charm, fitting well with both minimalist and maximalist trends.’

And Lucy Mather, design expert from Arighi Bianchi, agrees, ‘This connection to comforting, happy memories makes stripes a popular choice. They can energise a space, making it feel lively and dynamic, which is particularly appealing in modern design where there's a desire for vibrant and engaging interiors.’

So all this considered, we’re not surprised people went crazy for the H&M Home striped cotton tablecloth in yellow and white. Not to mention it’s so pretty!

But that is also why we were so happy to find the Yellow & White Stripe Print Cotton Fabric on Etsy for £7.99 per metre which works out even cheaper than the actual tablecloth. And if you don’t like raw hems and don’t own a sewing machine (or the skills for it), then all you need to add to the edges of the fabric is a hemming tape like the £5.99 Klangfeiler Hemming Tape from Amazon.

And while finding the exact same style of the H&M tablecloth on the market is no piece of cake, we did find pieces that emulate the look – even though they come with thinner stripes which are just as fresh-looking, or in different colours or in the form of a table runner rather than a tablecloth.

So do not despair if you missed out on the first drop of the viral tablecloth – there are other ways to get the look for your home long before the restock comes.

On-trend glassware with prices starting at £1 for a tumbler? Yes, please! Sign us up, as none other than the ultimate budget retailer Poundland releases its homeware collection for this summer, featuring the ribbed glassware trend we’ve been loving lately.

This home decor trend has been popping up everywhere in the last couple of years after starting life as a high-end look sold solely by designer brands. But that means that no one will ever be able to tell whether you spent near £100 for your ribbed-finish tumblers and wine glasses or just £1.

Oh yes, that’s right! £1 for each of the lovely pink ribbed glass tumblers, which are sold as a set of four. So technically, you will have to dish out £4 but you will get four glasses in exchange. And that means this year’s summer hosting is all sorted as far as we’re concerned.

Poundland’s ribbed glassware for the summer

The tablescaping decor trend has really taken off in recent times as we happily pair two of our major hobbies – eating and making things look pretty. And beautiful tableware is necessary for these purposes which is why we’re especially thrilled that aesthetically pleasing dining items are trending – whether that’s multi-coloured glassware or flower plates.

To mark the occasion of the Pepco homeware collection launch, Poundland took to the streets of Manchester, more specifically to St Anne’s Square, setting up temporary rooms filled with pieces from the new offering. And when passers-by were confronted by TV presenter Anthea Turner at the scene with the fact that all of it was available exclusively at Poundland, they could hardly believe their ears.

As mentioned, the glassware collection features the pink ribbed glass tumblers which also come in dark blue – but there’s more. Selling for £6 for a set of four (that’s £1.50 each), the collection also includes ribbed wine glasses, which come in the same pink and dark blue colourways. So you can either go for a contrasting mismatch or a matchy-matchy situation.

But larger pieces are on offer, too. The glass ribbed serving bowl elevated on a stand and coloured in the same pretty pink shade retails for budget-friendly £6, and the coordinating jug is available for the same price. We want the whole set!

The only downside of this superb deal is that the ribbed glassware from the homeware collection is only available in Poundland’s physical store and not on the website. So if you don’t have one near you, we found some just as stylish and ribbed alternatives that are still on the affordable side. But nothing can compare to those Poundland price points!

Alternatives

Recently, we’ve been finding it increasingly easier to achieve the designer look for less as high-street and budget-friendly brands continue delivering. One of such brands on top of its game is Dunelm with designs the likes of its new Lucilla dining chair, which is the perfect dupe for a high-end lookalike. But for half the price.

But this chair has so much more going for it than the simple fact it looks like another pricey design. For starters, it’s perfectly in line with the curvy home decor trend that has for the most part banished harsh angles from our homes. But the curved backrest of the Dunelm Lucilla boucle dining chair is not only stylish and trendy, but it’s also designed for comfort – as is the overall soft sit, padded chair style.

And all of that just for £169. All the while the high-end alternative, the Richmond Interiors Belle Lovely Chair In Cream available at Olivia’s, sells for £352 – more than double the price.

Dunelm Lucilla curved dining chair

In a recent Instagram reel, Dunelm labelled its Lucilla chair a ‘wow piece’, that is all about statement and its detailing.

While the Lucilla chair design also comes in a velvet finish, the boucle style is our preferred choice as the luxe look of the boucle furniture trend is still very much going strong, whether you choose the bolder orange umber colourway or the more neutral ivory shade.

Dunelm has been recently killing it with its designer-style releases, including the Ivy sofa, which also sports the curvy furniture look, much like the new Lucilla chair.

‘The trend of incorporating curves into interiors continues to gain momentum,’ says Alex Stubbs, Flitch interior stylist. And she to adds a tip on how to best style this look. ‘Don't be afraid to mix and match different styles and textures to create a dynamic and inviting environment.’

Lucy Mather, design expert from Arighi Bianchi, chimes in, ‘This trend stems from the 60s and 70s but now has a luxurious modern twist. Some design tips for styling a room that incorporates curves include thinking about how rugs and floor coverings can define the curves and anchor it in the room.'

'A rug with a circular or oval shape can echo a curve and further enhance its visual impact. Incorporate angular furniture pieces, such as coffee tables or side tables, to create visual contrast and add structure to the space.’

And even though the Lucilla chair was designed primarily for dining, that doesn’t mean you can’t use it in any other way. Dunelm suggests that it might make for a lovely addition to your bedroom to make a corner look a little cosier or to pair it with a dressing table.

This year, Primark is killing it with their homeware releases, and the latest Primark coastal tableware launch is no exception. We're running to the nearest store to stock up on this new budget-friendly range sharpish.

As we’re getting closer to the summer months, more and more home decor trends inspired by the tropics, the beach and everything that comes with it are starting to emerge. And with the wanderlust desti-core trend becoming a thing, it’s no surprise that the coastal look is also making itself known, bringing the ‘coastal grandma’ style back.

Primark's new coastal range, which starts at £3.50 for a side plate, is already going viral, showing people are here for a bit of a coastal vibe. After all, we’re all craving those warm summer temps and beachy days.

Combine this with his years of expertise in the hospitality industry and who else better than the First Dates star to let us in on his little lesser-known secrets for hosting a great spring get-together?

As the season turns and the promise of sunnier days is finally ahead of us, chances are you're likely looking to spruce up your outdoor space in time for the many garden party ideas set to grace our homes come springtime.

Working in partnership with French gin brand, G'Vine, we grilled Fred on some of his top tips on how to create an unforgettable memory for your guests. We've previously taken on board Fred's garden party tips, and this time it's all to do with clever glassware choices that will make your guests swoon.

Fred Sirieix's glassware hosting tip

Speaking to Ideal Home on hosting success this springtime, we asked Fred to share with us his little lesser-known secret that he's picked up while navigating the hospitality industry for a party that feels fresh and fun – even more so if you're decorating for Easter bank holiday celebrations.

'As you said, it's got to be fun,' begins Fred. 'You've got to remember and ask yourself, how are you going to make it fun? How are you going to make it interesting? Are you going to make your dishes more colourful, vibrant, and exciting when it comes to the table?'

Something tells us even Fred (while he may not know it) is in the know of the popular tablescaping decor trend that has swept social media, given all this talk on coloured glassware and dishes.

'It's thinking about the basics,' explains Fred. 'For example, if you're making a gin and tonic, what kind of glass are you going to use? Are you going to use a straight tumbler or are you going to use a more elaborate glass where you can have a bit more decor inside? The Spanish, for example, are very big with their gin and tonics in terms of the garnishes they put inside. Some of them are just incredible!'

'With gin and tonics, what I like to do is take a big glass. Big glasses work very well for this because the key to a great gin and tonic is ice. Then, you put your garnish in and it's almost like you're creating a piece of art – a piece of art that is going to make you and your guests feel good.'

That being said, it's pretty clear that the secret to hosting success is paying mind to little details that would otherwise be overlooked, like glassware, for example. Better yet, it's so simple to achieve and makes for an expensive-looking tablescape.

'These are the kinds of things that we can do to inspire ourselves but also inspire our guests and make them think, "Wow, someone has put some effort into this party!". And that's exactly what it's about – making people feel that you have actually thought about these things and have made a lot of effort,' continues Fred.

'What you're doing is hosting and you're here to host a great party and have fun. So, you should let people know that you've prepared everything for them and aim to create something truly special.'

As an interior stylist I have set up many tables for seasonal photoshoots and at this time of year, I am often asked how to easily decorate an Easter table. The long Easter weekend break offers us all a great opportunity to get together with family and friends, and the dining table can be central to celebrating being together. 

When it comes to Easter decorating ideas, ensure your table blends in with your surrounding dining room colours by choosing a scheme which picks out accents that are already in the room and work with the overall aesthetic of your home. For example, if you have a neutral dining room chose a scheme which factors in natural materials, or if the backdrop allows it you could go for a classic pastel palette brought up-to-date with pops of joyful brighter colours, as I have on this table.

Once you've decided on your colour scheme give it an Easter theme with seasonal spring flowers, eggs in different guises and don’t forget a nod to the Easter bunny or two! 

Bright and colourful Easter tablescape

I love bright colours, and I've embraced them with this joyful Easter decorating scheme for my table. Here are my top tricks to styling your table like a pro.

1. Choose your backdrop

Invest in a tablecloth which ties in with the scheme in your dining room or a dining area in an open-plan kitchen-diner. This is a worthwhile investment as it will get used on other special occasions. Opt for a plain colour or a subtle pattern, as you're going to be building up the interest with other items, which you don’t want to be fighting for attention against the tablecloth. 

Of course, if your table has, for example, a nice wooden finish why not opt for a table runner teamed with placemats. Again keep them plain, so they don’t fight for attention.

2. Create a stunning centrepiece

Give your Easter table a focal point with an eye-catching centrepiece, which combines the different elements of your tablescaping and holds everything together. Give it some height with a cake stand like this Maxi footed plate from Wayfair. Here I used a ready-made cake from Sainsbury’s and simply positioned two adorable chocolate bunnies by Cathryn Cariad from Etsy on top, then I surrounded it with single stems of spring flowers, cut short and displayed in tiny bottles positioned around the cake. 

Another ideas is to use an Easter wreath with a large central church candle, or you could run posies of flowers interspersed with low candles along the length of the table, gathering taller flowers and candles in a circle in the centre. And if you're feeling crafty, have a go at this egg shell flower centrepiece. 

3. Elevate your everyday tableware

Use standard white or cream plates as the basis of your place setting. Then layer with a napkin to tie in with your colour scheme and add in a more decorative side plate like the Aleta from Wayfair. Either pick up side plates in sets or look out for vintage plates in charity shops. For an extra touch, try this year's favourite tablescaping trend - the napkin bunny egg. 

Serving up an Easter breakfast or brunch? Add in a decorative egg cup, too – I styled my table with this Wayfair's porcelain egg cup set . The simple style shown here has a wide rim where you can display an added extra chocolate treat or a little gift for a guest. 

4. Feather in seasonal flowers

Decorative water glasses with an embossed design like the Lim from Wayfair that I've used add another texture to your table setting and also make lovely low vases for a spring posy. Use it as a central display on a smaller table or as one of a collection displayed along a longer table. Simply arrange a mix of different blooms cut to the same length in each glass. 

Tulip petals can be opened or re-flexed to create a fuller bloom, as shown. This works best on tulips in full bloom. Remove them from water for a half an hour to slightly dehydrate before you start. Then gently place your finger on the thicker part of the petal where it is connected to the stem and pop the petal backwards to open. If the petal starts to tear, leave it for a few minutes more to dehydrate. Continue one petal at a time, working your way around the flower.

5. Personalise place settings

Have fun getting creative with place names. If you enjoy baking, you could make some Easter shortbread biscuits in egg or simple bunny shapes. Ensure you make a hole in the top before baking. When cooled ice with fondant icing then imprint the name or initial of the recipient and add to the design with embossed patterns (or you can buy these ones at Enchanting Bakes to save time!). Tie in place with a ribbon around the cutlery or around a rolled napkin. 

Alternatively, cut out eggs from card and draw on the name – this idea looks lovely decorated with rickrack and ribbons.  Both the shortbread biscuits or card alternatives make lovely Easter decorations without the names hung on an Easter tree.

6. Add table confetti for a final flourish

Table confetti always adds an extra bit of sparkle and with their shiny foil wrappers small chocolate eggs are a perfect seasonal addition. Take this idea a step further by mixing in larger honeycomb eggs along the table. Then fan out from the table into other areas of the room.

It’s one of the prettiest, most fun and easiest Easter decorating ideas we’ve come across, shaping a fabric napkin with an egg nestled in the centre into a bunny. And everyone is doing it – from influencers like Melissa Ritchie of @littleterracedhouse to brands like George Home and the TV presenter and queen of hosting herself, Laura Jackson. 

And the best part is that anyone can do it and everyone can get involved, even the youngest members of the family. It doubles up as a fun activity and a pretty table decor that can be personalised to your style and theme, as well as to each of your guests.

The Easter tablescaping trend 2024

‘Decorations make a table come to life and provide the perfect place to showcase some personality,’ says Rachael Kiss, marketing manager at Alliance Online. 

Creating your own personalised tablescape for Easter Sunday, which falls on the 31st March this year, is the perfect way to welcome the season and celebrate the occasion, whether you opt to craft an Easter-themed eggshell flower centrepiece, decorate an Easter tree or go for bunny-shaped napkin table favours. Or do all of them.

‘Napkins and tablecloths are perfect to spring into the Easter theme, but doing some DIY in making your own bunny napkin table favours provides that personal touch,’ Rachael says.

Rachel Fearnley of Rachel Fearnley Designs agrees, ‘Easter celebrations are a wonderful opportunity to be creative and to embrace the new season. A simple way to do this is to create Easter bunny napkins. These favours are a charming way to elevate your tablescape whether for breakfast, brunch, lunch or candle-lit supper.’

And this is what you’ll need to make them.

Step-by-step guide

‘It’s a very quick and easy finishing touch to add to an Easter table and will bring a smile to guests’ faces,’ says Melissa of @littleterracedhouse. ‘I love anything that brings a little ‘surprise and delight’ which these bunny ear napkins definitely do.’ 

So with that in mind, let’s get to it. As previously mentioned (and as Melissa just said) this method is very easy, even easier than folding a napkin into a bow which was going viral over last Christmas. 

‘Before you start creating your table favours, it’s important to decide your tablescaping theme. Pastel, florals, stripes and gingham are go-to styles to achieve an Easter theme; although rustic and earthy tones would also work well. Most importantly, don’t be afraid to use colour in your tablescape - using your napkins is one of the easiest ways to do this,’ says Rachael of Alliance Online.

These are some of our favourite napkins that we’d be happy to make bunny-shaped Easter table favours out of.

‘To create the bunny, place the napkin on your table, if you are using a patterned napkin, have the patterned side facing down,’ Rachel Fearnley starts. 

‘Take one corner and fold it on the diagonal to create a triangle. Now with the point end of the triangle closest to you, roll the fabric up to form a “tube”. Bring both ends of the “tube” together and cross them over each other.’

Finally, tie with your choice of a ribbon or twine that best complements your tablescape and place either a hard-boiled egg or a chocolate egg in the centre.

Rachel adds, ‘There are different fun ways to personalise the bunny for each of your guests. To transform this into a place setting, write your guest’s name onto a small luggage label. Then attach the label to the top of the bunny’s ears.’

Alternatively or additionally, you can paint the hard-boiled eggs to reflect each of your guest’s style or personality, you could place a dried of fresh flower stem where the tie sits as Melissa has done and more.

Angela Scanlon is easily our go-to girl when we need bold and whimsy interior inspiration, so you can only imagine how pleased we were when we spotted that she had taken to Instagram to share a stunning, cosy corner of her dining room.

This creates distinctive zones for different activities in your home, bringing purpose and organisation to a room without structural dividers. Explaining further, Daniel Prendergast, design director at The Rug Seller says, 'They act as visual cues that delineate different areas within a room, helping to define separate functional zones without the need for physical barriers.'

'By placing rugs under furniture groupings or within specific areas, you can clearly define spaces for various activities such as dining, lounging, or working,' he adds. In this case, Angela has shown how she uses this corner in her dining room for relaxing, sipping your daily cup of joe or quiet activities like reading.

‘Statement plates are huge for 2024 and flower designs are leading the way on people’s must-have lists,’ says Lucy Mather, interior design expert at Arighi Bianchi. ‘There are lots of influences that are feeding into this trend. Spring looks and florals give a freshness to interiors and there are also new ways each year to add this design to our homes, including decorative plates.’

Why should you buy flower plates?

‘Entertaining at home is still very much on people’s radar,’ notes Lucy. ‘So curating a statement tablescape is the perfect way to entertain at home whilst creating an experience.’

And few things are as statement as flower plates, which are also right on trend with the current kitsch bloomcore movement championed by the likes of Lily Allen.

‘There is also an element of kitsch to many of these designs which people love. It’s that comforting feeling of the familiar coming through in design trends,’ Lucy explains.

‘When styling a tablescape with flower plates, it's crucial to achieve a harmonious balance between the floral elements and other tableware and decor items. Start by selecting a theme or colour scheme,’ Alex advises.

‘This trend realty works when you go for maximum impact,' explains Lucy. 'A pastel palette, with bold designs, beautiful textures and layering of tableware works amazingly well.’

It’s really mixing and matching along with layering which are the key to a successful tablescape using flower plates.

‘Mix and match different patterns and textures, pairing flower plates with solid-coloured pieces or complementary motifs to avoid overwhelming the floral design,’ suggests Alex.

‘Create visual interest through layering, incorporating placemats, chargers, and table runners for depth. Enhance the floral theme with accessories like centrepieces, napkin rings, or place card holders, ensuring not to overcrowd the table to maintain elegance.’

At this point, Amanda Holden is more the face of interior design than she is a TV and radio presenter and talent show judge – her dining room makeover standing as our latest obsession. Adorned in statement wallpaper panelling daringly extending to the ceiling, Amanda's grandiose dining room scheme is the textbook definition of loud luxury.

Considering dining rooms are integral to the hosting season, from full-blown dinner parties or intimate soirees, it pays to ensure they deliver quite the impression. While some favour more neutral dining room colour schemes, you can count on the likes of Amanda Holden to always take it a step up. Not only is she acing the rising anti-quiet luxury look, but she's also pioneering an emerging wallpaper trend that designers predict will be big in 2024. What is it, you ask? 'Adding a dramatic look by choosing a bold wallpaper and taking it around the room and up on a ceiling is the best way to embrace a maximalist, decadent look which is perfect for a dining room,' begins Ann Marie Cousins, interior designer and founder of AMC Design. Considering Amanda's celebrity status, there truly is no other design feature that quite gives the wow factor as this bold design approach, creating an impact like no other.

Designer Avalana Simpson of Avalana Designs predicts that this is a dining room wallpaper idea that will command attention this year. 'This year we've seen a rise in ceilings becoming the 5th wall,' she notes. 'You can either paint your ceiling to match your wall colour or consider a bold colour to make it pop. Or, lovers of maximalism and loud luxury can instead add a show-stopping ceiling mural to encourage people to look up and feel fully immersed.'

Of course, Amanda Holden has never shied away from declaring her love for the bolder things in life – something we learned from her daughter's bedroom makeover, where she nailed the risky task of clashing patterns – so her championing the rise of the ceiling mural is nothing out of the ordinary.

Not only does using the same wallpaper on both walls and the ceiling create an enveloping and immersive atmosphere but when done correctly, can help make a small dining room look bigger, too.

'By extending the same wallpaper to the ceiling, the visual boundaries between the two are blurred giving the impression of a larger room, which creates a harmonious design that serves as a cohesive backdrop for furnishings and decor,' explains Chelsea Clark, head of brand at Lust Home.

Chelsea adds that choosing bright and bold patterns helps draw your eyes upwards, creating the illusion of higher ceilings and taller walls. Darker wallpaper, on the other hand, helps to add drama and intrigue to a space. She explains that this creates a cocooning effect, which when paired with matching walls, is a great way to add depth to a room and make accessories pop.

How to add your own 'ceiling mural'

'The way this space works with the wallpapered ceiling and the walls is because the panels break up the paper. If the walls were top to bottom wallpapered with a matching ceiling, we'd have a very different space,' explains Sahar Saffari, senior designer at Hi-Spec Design. That being said, her biggest tip for creating your own ceiling mural is to ensure it's not overkill and implement balance.

In terms of choosing the right ceiling mural for you, Avalana suggests carefully choosing wallpaper that utilises materials ideal for ceilings. Each of Avalana's custom murals, for example, is printed using UV gel inks that ensure the design stays vivid for up to 80 years. They're easily removable too, making them ideal if you're renting.

Better yet, simply opting to go custom will alleviate a lot of pressure in nailing the look right off the bat. 'This process allows you to alter colours, change the design layout to suit your space and perhaps most importantly in terms of using them on your ceiling. It also allows for ceiling roses and other lighting elements that are existing to be factored in.'

In addition, to avoid the wallpaper taking over and drowning a room completely, Ann Marie Cousins urges you to consider employing the design within wall panelling the same way Amanda has, breaking up the room with plain colours which complement the pattern on your chosen wallpaper.

'Having a wallpaper which has a metallic pattern and using lighting and accessories which pick up those metallics is the best way to ensure a cohesive scheme,' assures Ann Marie. Amanda's makeover cleverly layers dining room lighting ideas through the likes of LED spotlights, a dramatic oversized pendant light, and wall sconces.

As a result, the interior designer remarks that 'Amanda Holden has guaranteed that the room feels rich and welcoming, even on the darkest evenings', complementing the daring wallpapered look, allowing it to dominate the dining area.

We'd be lying if we said Dianne Buswell hasn't been at the top of our interiors radar as of late. The Strictly Come Dancing star has long been a fan favourite for her talent and vibrant personality and we've recently learned that her knack for all things glam and fun is reflected in her home decor choices, too – her furry dining chairs commanding our attention.

As far as the most popular home decor trends go, the boucle furniture trend is one that we've seen continually gain speed – from sofas, armchairs, and even dining chairs. As the appetite for tactile interiors heightens, it's not just boucle taking centre stage but rather all sorts of cosy textures, and the furry chairs in Dianne and her partner Joe Sugg's open-plan modern dining room affirm the growing trend further.

'While faux fur throws, cushions, and rugs have been popular for some time, we are seeing its application extend to furniture, especially chairs,' begins Lucy Mather, design expert at Arighi Bianchi. 'Dianne's furry dining chairs are the perfect example of how you can be a bit more adventurous with this fabric.'

You can spot the statement chairs in all their glory in the second image of the professional dancer's Instagram post. Needless to say, we're in love. Lucy goes on to attribute the 'huge rise in people experimenting with texture in their interiors' to the growing desire to feel comforted and cocooned in our homes.

Laura Rich, project design lead and interiors expert at Furniturebox reveals that they've observed textured upholstery proving to be an 'increasingly popular choice for a few years now'. As expected, boucle still reigns supreme with searches for 'boucle dining chairs' up +50% in the last 12 months. However, she also notes that searches for 'fluffy dining chairs' are up +20% over the last year, too.

'The trend speaks to a collective side-step from the super sleek and minimalist interiors we were seeing everywhere a few years ago,' remarks Laura. 'People are embracing maximalism as a decor choice as a way to introduce more sumptuous and welcoming vibes, and as a way to showcase more of their personalities.'

Therefore, seeing as Dianne is known for her lively spirit, it's no wonder she's also championing this bold step up in the dining room chair scene that was formerly led by the likes of linen and leather.

This trend is something we've even seen other celebrities embracing in their homes, like Stacey Dooley's divisive yeti chairs, which has recently struck debate among fans.

Better yet, opting for a tactile dining chair as Dianne has is one of the easiest ways to make a dining room look more expensive, as it adds layers and visual interest to an otherwise boring or dated-looking scheme.

'Using texture in your home decor like this adds interest, depth and dimension, creating a dynamic space that engages your senses – something Dianne has done with flair,' affirms Laura. Especially when employed in a room that is traditionally quite flat and one-dimensional.

Lena Gierasinska, head of product and displays at Barker and Stonehouse explains this is because 'these tactile textures add characterful yet still feel chic and pared-back, making them wonderful additions to minimalist spaces as they juxtapose the unfussy decor without adding to visual noise'.

'We can all learn a few things from Dianne's interior decorating style,' concludes Lucy. 'She has cleverly layered lots of different materials – from the boucle sofas, and knitted cushions, to the faux fur chairs in her dining space. The reason that this works so well is a tonal colour palette. Everything works in harmony to create a really inviting space.'

So, while she's garnered fame through her captivating performances, it's undeniable that she's secured a rightful place on our radar as one of the celebrity homes to continually keep a close (and coveting) eye on.

If there's one area we can always count on the celebrity cook and author to deliver on, it's always being up to embrace colour. From pan to plate, Nigella has always been sure to make a statement – something we've previously seen with her choice of red air fryer and sunshine-yellow bakeware.

Turns out, her colourful array of crockery and cookware likely goes beyond just personal preference and is rather carefully curated to elevate the visual experience as a whole. In short: Nigella's food always complements her plating, and vice versa, making it a 'low-effort yet highly impactful way to create a feast for the eyes,' remarks Jess Martin, party planning expert at Ginger Ray.

When tablescaping comes to mind, many of us may often just think of arrangements and decorative ways to make a tablescape look expensive. However, these decisions are often made whilst the dishes are still empty.

'Nigella's secret is to take this a step further, considering the colours of the food themselves and how to include them in the visual experience,' explains Jess. 'Nigella allows the food and plates to work in harmony together, which in turn adds an extra wow factor for guests.'

Better yet, you don't need to go out and spend an arm and a leg on whole matching dinnerware sets to achieve the look. You can simply mix and match and build your colourful, decorative collection through small one-off purchases here and there. 

Even celebrities like Cameron Diaz are championing this mix-and-match tableware trend, namely for its 'playful yet coordinated look', says Jess.

Jess also reminds us of the importance of thinking about the size and shape of your dishes compared to the food you're serving, as these will ultimately 'act as a frame for your artwork'.

On top of that, rest assured you don't need to know how to use the colour wheel in a super extensive manner to achieve that same wow factor, either. Some examples of tried and tested colour combinations to start you off with are: red and green, blue and yellow, and pink and green – all of which have been used throughout the cook's Instagram page.

For extra food for thought, Jess adds that 'earthy tones look great with a vibrant blue and berry pinks and reds look gorgeous on plates of a similar shade'.

However, if worrying too heavily about harmonious or contrasting colours is causing you more trouble than it's worth, ditch the wheel, simply channel your inner Nigella, and just have fun with it. You'll get a feeling if it looks right or not (and if not, you still tried something new, which is a win in itself).

While we've placed a focus on colour-coordinating your food and plating, don't think that general tablescaping no longer plays a role, because it certainly still does.

This week, John Lewis reported that #bows has racked up 1 billion views on TikTok and searches for ‘velvet ribbon’ on the John Lewis website are up by +125% compared to last year. And the retailer predicts that the bow trend will continue well into 2024. 

‘I think the accessibility of bows and ease of use really makes them so popular as they can be used anywhere around the house to add a festive touch to celebrations,’ says Freddie Crowther, founder of Polkra. ‘Bows are beautiful, versatile decorations that can be incorporated into so many homeware and festive decorations, from gift wrapping and Christmas tree toppers.’

And while folding a napkin into the shape of a bow doesn’t have to be limited to just Christmas celebrations, we think it is perfect for it. As does TikToker Chantel Mila of @mama_mila_ who’s one of the few content creators that have shared a tutorial on how to make a bow napkin.

All you need to do is roll up the said napkin, fold the ends inwards to create a loose shape of a bow and then loop one side through the napkin ring, placing the ring in the middle. And voila! A visual tutorial (above) really makes it much easier to understand though.

‘Using napkins and a napkin ring to create bows for your place setting is a gorgeous way to enhance your dining table without the need of purchasing anything else,’ Freddie says of this budget Christmas table idea.

1. Choose the right napkin

Don’t attempt this with a paper napkin and pick the right napkin – that being square.

‘Always opt for a napkin that is square and made from fabric that holds its shape well such as linen or cotton,’ Freddie advises. ‘Napkins that are 45cm x 45cm are the perfect size, anything smaller and it'll be tricky to make them.’

2. Choose the right napkin ring

As the napkin ring is the centre and base of the bow that holds it all together, try to opt for one that’s on the wider side rather than a particularly skinny one. As for the design and materials, that is up to you, your taste and tablescape theme.

‘This is all about personal preference and whether you want the ring or napkin to sing. Whether you prefer classic silver, rustic wood or embellished designs, everything should elevate your final tablescape,’ Freddie concludes.

‘Napkins are a fun way of really elevating your table,’ explains leading events planner Lavinia Stewart-Brown. ‘A relevant and timely idea for this time of year would be to create tree-shaped napkins. You can get lots of inspiration from social media to do these, however, it is easier than you think!’

To help you fold your own serviettes into a Christmas tree, you’ll find a step-by-step guide with written instructions below, as well as step-by-step images from Samantha Morris, Director of Entertainment at Par-Tee Events.

Step-by-step

1. Start with a perfect square

To impress your guests with your festive serviette folding skills, you’ll need to start with a perfect square. If you have a large fabric serviette, you’ll probably need to fold your serviette in half and then you might have to fold in half again to get this perfect square. 

If you have a paper napkin, the size and shape should already be perfect, as most have already been pre-folded to be the perfect square.

Then place the serviette or napkin on a flat surface and angle it so that the corner containing no folds is furthest away from you.

2. Fold each leaf down to create a triangle

If you look at the top corner of the serviette, you should see that there are multiple ‘leaves.’ These leaves are the different layers of paper or fabric that have been folded to make the perfect square.

Take the first leaf of this corner and fold it down, so you create a triangle with its two shorter sides sitting about one centimetre away from the edge of the serviette. Take the next leaf and fold that down, making your fold about a centimetre above the previous one.

You should continue to do this until you’ve folded all of the leaves. 

3. Flip the serviette over

When you’ve folded down each leaf, you then need to flip the serviette over and turn it upside down. All you should be able to see from this angle is a flat piece of fabric or paper, with the folds facing down onto the table. 

4. Fold in the sides

Next, Lavinia says, ‘This bit can be fiddly, but you can then fold the left and right sides to the opposite side of the square, giving you a tree shape with a little diamond on the top.’

This will ensure that all of the messy parts of the folded serviette face downwards onto the plate or the table but will still allow guests to pick up the napkin and unfold it with ease. 

After all, the last thing your Christmas guests want is to perform some backwards-origami in order to protect their clothes from gravy spills.  

5. Flip back over, and tuck in the tips

To finish, you should flip the serviette back over and tuck in the tips of every leaf you previously folded down. 

This will create the layers you expect to see from a Christmas tree serviette, and the more you tuck, the more you’ll see the Christmas tree shape you were hoping for. 

Then, when all of the tips are tucked, you should be left with a Christmas tree serviette that you and your guests will be proud of!

As an interior stylist, I've laid hundreds of Christmas tables over the years. They've been beautifully decorated festive tables for magazine shoots, themed ones for workshops, extravagant designs for events, and then, of course, my own. This year alone I've styled many Christmas tables for shoots, influencers and media – one of which was for over 40 people!

Coming up with new Christmas table decor ideas and setting a Christmas table is such a fun thing to do and no matter how many I style, I never find it a chore. I know that's not how everyone feels about the task, however, and I always get asked where to start, and how to go about making a table setting look beautifully curated when there are so many items to display. 

It's easy to find yourself with a table full of garlands and candles and no place to actually eat! That's why having a clear vision in your head before you begin is important, rather than piling everything on and hoping for the best. 

With so much experience, I thought you might like to know my ingredients for a successful Christmas table setting – so you can impress guests and get your day off to a good start.

1. Have a colour scheme in mind – and tie it in with your Christmas decor

It goes without saying that a colour scheme can really make or break a table setting, but with Christmas it's even more important. Being that you'll no doubt have a Christmas tree and decorations already up in your home, it pays to match your table decor to those or at least continue the theme by picking out one of the colours. 

To really make it feel Christmassy, I'd advise going for a colour on your tablecloth or table runner – that way, when the plates are cleared you'll still have a table that ties in with the rest of your room decor. 

It doesn't have to just be one colour either – pick one main one, and then two accent colours. Use the main one for the larger items, such as the tablecloth, and then the accents for smaller items like candles or the pattern on your plates, for example.

2. Layer, layer… and layer some more!

Building up your Christmas table is like decorating a whole room in many respects… While painted walls and a few items of furniture are perfectly functional, it's when you add rugs, curtains and cushions that the interior really starts to take shape.

That's the same for your Christmas table – it needs layers to bring it to life and soften the scheme. So go for a tablecloth and/or a table runner, stack crockery on top of placemats, add seat decorations and cutlery on top of napkins… all these layers will add interest and help give your table the wow factor. 

3. Height and texture are important

A lot of tableware items are low level – plates, placemats, cutlery – and even things like drinking glasses and gravy jugs aren't that tall, which means your table can look lacking. To really give it impact, you need a few items that are taller, such as candlesticks, cake stands with baubles or a floral centrepiece. Ideally, you'd have a mix of heights, which creates visual impact and helps lead the eye along the table, taking in all the different elements. 

Texture is another thing that I think is key when it comes to Christmas table settings. If everything is shiny, from the porcelain to baubles or ceramics, it doesn't have the same impact as a table that has some soft linens and foliage.   

4. The smaller details matter

Now this one is key if you want to make your guests feel special. Taking time to plan a few small elements that surprise or make each person smile is something that will make your Christmas table setting stand out. Try adding a personalised gift at each place setting you could monogram napkins, write your guests' names on baubles or make bespoke air-dry clay Christmas decorations? Another lovely touch is beautifully designed mini menus or decorations tied on the back of each chair. Get creative and be prepared to enjoy seeing your guests ooh and aah at your table. 

It doesn't have to be expensive either. If you're looking for budget Christmas decorating ideas, something as simple as a hand-written note, a fortune cookie or cutlery tied up with ribbon can turn your table from basic to beautiful in an instant.

Hosting at home is something many of us have become all too familiar with, and even more so now that we're headfirst in the run-up to Christmas. Of course, hosting goes hand in hand with the tablescaping trend, whether it be a small soiree or a festive dinner party. Therefore, it pays to know how to achieve a tablescape that looks luxe, elevated, and most of all, expensive to spruce up your Christmas table decorating ideas.

Luckily for us, the Mad About the House writer has paired up with TaskRabbit to reveal her top tips on how to successfully host in your home to ensure your tablescape packs a punch with an ultimate 'wow' factor.

As part of TaskRabbit's interior trends report for 2024, hosting at home is a trend that has no signs of losing life anytime soon. With purse strings a tad tighter, not only are many Brits prioritising budget Christmas decorating ideas for their homes but in the dining department, too, favouring staying at home rather than going out.

'As hosting at home continues to rise, Brits are transforming their spaces into party-ready havens, with over half (53%) going all out and investing between £50 and £150 for each home-hosted soiree,' report TaskRabbit.

Commenting on the hosting at home trend, interiors expert Kate Watson-Smyth says, 'During the Covid-19 lockdown, our kitchens essentially became our restaurants and that mindset of elevating our everyday dining for both guests and family has carried on.'

'More and more of us are investing in finishing touches to make the table look pretty and create a party atmosphere – candles, coasters, glassware and napkins have all become symbols of perfect hosting and creating the wow factor.'

This includes but is not limited to some of our favourite tablescaping additions we've covered, like the coloured glassware trend and vintage-inspired tableware trend.

Following TaskRabbit's trend report, we asked Kate for her top tips for creating a tablescape that looks expensive and professionally done.

Speaking to Ideal Home, Kate begins, 'It's this word, abundance. Meaning lots of one type of thing.' In a way, it's almost similar to the clustering trend we've seen floating around.

'Lots of one type of flower. Lots of candles grouped together. So rather than spreading them down the table one by one, have a big bunch of candles in the middle,' advises Kate.

'Have a big bunch of greenery in the middle. Or, you can fill a fruit bowl with lots of oranges, figs, or seasonal produce, if you like. Or, even just get strings of lights that are battery operated and put those in a glass vase (similar to Nigella Lawson's kitchen fairy light trick),' she continues.

'It's about creating that notion of abundance.'

On top of the golden rule of abundance, Kate also suggests 'keeping the colour palette quite restricted, simple, and tonal' as well as utilising 'lots of greenery like moss or ivy which doesn't wilt'. These are things you can do that are effective, simple, and affordable that certainly make for an expensive-looking tablescape.

And, if you plan on having central flowers, she urges you to 'keep them low'.

'I've been to dinner events before where the flowers are beautiful but they're so high you can't see the person opposite you,' she warns.

Then, to finish off, consider keeping your crockery very simple, but then having fun with your serving dishes.

'If you watch any of those cookery programs with Jamie Oliver or Nigella Lawson, they've always got a fantastic mix of what often looks like vintage plates that they're serving things on,' says Kate.

'Have a variety of mismatched vintage patterns, and that's a really good way to bring interest to a table without distracting from the food.'

Helen Joseph, interior designer at premium housebuilder Redrow adds, 'What's interesting with Kimberly's tablescape is her use of colours – from neutral pinks and beiges to a pop of glitz here and there, she's created a smooth palette to help welcome her guests and let them feel steady and at ease.' 

Therefore, it only makes sense that this would extend to her glassware choices, too.

'Kimberly has chosen rustic pink for her selection of coloured glassware, which harmonizes beautifully with her Christmas theme,' continues Darren. 'This choice makes a modern sophisticated change to traditional reds and greens, giving it a unique charm.'

Seeing as Kimberley has previously embraced a more traditional Christmas staircase garland, her use of a more muted Christmas colour scheme is an elegant switch-up we're certainly not opposed to.

Inspired by the beloved Christmas carol of the same name, this type of holiday tableware is a throwback to the past and very much falls under the vintage category these days. But this year, retailers such as John Lewis and Anthropologie are reviving the trend with their contemporary variations.

Perhaps it’s another symptom of the current vintage-inspired tableware trend that we’re seeing everywhere. But one thing is for sure, this Christmas period is shaping up to be a nostalgia-fuelled one if 12 days of Christmas plates are going to be involved.  

But the good news is that you don’t have to decorate your Christmas tablescape with them if you don’t particularly want to. Instead, they can make for a lovely Christmas decoration idea.

‘The trend for vintage tableware comes from a desire to add warmth and character to dining experiences,’ says Sophia Ayrton-Grime, interior designer and founder of Studio Raff. ‘People appreciate the nostalgia and uniqueness of vintage pieces.’

And this clearly extends to vintage Christmas tableware as the 12 days of Christmas plates are having a resurgence. These 12-piece sets, each plate illustrated with different gifts given to the carol singer by his ‘true love’, have become a collector’s item and can often be found on resale sites such as eBay and Vinterior.

But this season, retailers decided to bring them back, with John Lewis even adorning their design with archival motifs. ‘The design team took inspiration from our archives, giving treasured vintage prints a new lease of life,’ says Lisa Cherry, Christmas buyer from John Lewis. ‘The carefully reimagined designs have been celebrated throughout the Christmas collection.’

Your no fireplace living room ideas may not have an actual working hearth, but you can create the look by boxing out a faux chimneybreast using simple stud-frames and plasterboard. 

‘A false chimneybreast can bring much-needed shape to boxy living rooms and provide a natural focal point,’ says interior designer, Louise Robinson. ‘Brick slips inside the ‘hearth’ will boost authenticity, while shelves either side will recreate the fireplace alcove scenario familiar in many period properties.’

As you won’t need the full depth of a working chimney, the space sacrifices will be minimal – just 30cm deep is sufficient to achieve the impression of a chimneybreast without losing too much valuable floorspace. Here, pretty zellige tiles ensure the ‘fireplace’ takes centre-stage.

2. Dress (windows) to impress

If you don’t have a living room fireplace, it’s the perfect opportunity to draw the eye to the windows, especially if the windows in question boast expansive views. ‘Opt for floor-to-ceiling curtains in a classical print to imbue no fireplace living room ideas with a sense of grandeur,’ suggests Yvonne Keal, senior product manager at Hillarys. 

‘Soft, neutral shades will help create a calming feel and will work with many different decor styles. Natural, linen-look fabrics will enhance the authentic feel, while thermal linings can not only keep off the chill, but also help to create a rich, full look at the window.'  

3. Choose impactful art

While no fireplace living room ideas aren't exactly ideal, it could be the chance to flex some creative freedom by plotting a fabulous picture wall. A top tip is to stick to a specific colour scheme and ensure your artwork is cohesive by using the same style and colour frames throughout,’ she adds.  

4. Commission a media cabinet

Savvy media units make an excellent fireplace replacement boasting extra storage benefits and a beautiful way to frame a large television – movie nights incoming! Opt for a made-to-measure unit to maximises its full potential. 

‘From the configuration through to the finish, a made to measure built-in media cabinet will ensure you make the best use of available space and can be tailored to your unique requirements,'says Rachal Hutcheson from Sharps.

5. Embrace bioethanol

Bioethanol fireplaces feature real flames but without the hassle of cleaning and maintaining a fireplace.  ‘They’re a great way to achieve the cosiness of a fireplace, and can be installed by anyone, without the need for a flue or chimney, which means it can be placed anywhere you’d like without having to worry about fumes, soot or the like,’ explains Sara Mølnitz, Marketing Manager, Bioethanol Fireplace.

 A bioethanol fireplace runs on bioethanol fuel which is produced from biological material making it an eco-friendlier choice. Look for bioethanol that has an alcohol percentage between 95% to 97.5% – lower will burn a blueish flame and have a strong odour, while higher will burn too fast and too hot.  

Bioethanol fireplaces are not designed to heat your entire home but they can certainly add cosiness to a new build living room. And, as when buying a woodburner, you should match the heat output of the bioethanol fireplace to the dimensions of the room you’re heating. One litre of bioethanol fuel should burn for four-eight hours, depending on heat setting.

6. Hang a mirror

Mirrors make great statement pieces, with the added benefit of boosting the sense of light and space in your no fireplace living room ideas. ‘Placing a mirror above a low cabinet or shelf will mimic the design of a fireplace and create a centrepiece within your living room,’ adds designer Anna. 

‘If you’re looking to attract attention to a certain area of your room then choose an oversized mirror with a unique design or frame. However, make sure the mirror fits with your space, if it is too big it could look out of place and stand out for all the wrong reasons.’

7. Add colour and texture

To mimic the warm, cosy atmosphere of a fireplace in your new build home, interior designer Matthew Williamson promotes the power of choosing warm colours for your walls. 

‘I am loving a soft plaster pink at home at the moment, as it feels like a new neutral – it’s warmer than grey and more interesting than beige,’ he enthuses. ‘Drench the living room with it and paint the woodwork, window frames, ceiling or even a piece of furniture in the same shade to create interest and add warmth to the space without it needing a fireplace. You can also choose similar tones of the same colour to layer on the warmth and create a similar effect.’

For extra layers of texture and colour, Matthew recommends investing in accessories such as velvet cushions and printed bed throws in rich chocolate, mustard yellow, cinnamon and burnt orange tones. ‘I feel this palette will work well against most neutrals and soft colours and will instantly add a cosy element to the room,’ he adds.

8. Build bookshelves

Distract attention away from an empty wall in a no-fireplace living room by covering it in bookshelves. You could bolt flatpack bookshelves together to fill a wall and create a library focal point.

Take the shelving from wall-to-wall and right up to the ceiling to get that exclusive ‘member’s club’ aesthetic. You could attach moulding to the top and bottom to give it more of a built-in look, boosting the style and making it look more expensive. Painting them a deep, warm colour will make them look more cosy.

9. Look up

Focus attention above by giving your ceiling a major glow up. A fabulous ceiling rose, gorgeous coving and punchy light fittings can all be used to turn all eyes upwards upon entering a living room! 

‘Wallpapering the ceiling or going for a full colour-block approach with rich paint colours can also add drama overhead, so the absence of a fireplace will go completely unnoticed,’ adds interior designer Louise Robinson. The more interesting you can make the ceiling, the better; think gold leaf panelling, vintage mirror or lime-washed tongue-and-groove for a cute coastal vibe.

10. Source a statement dresser

Using a statement dresser as the centrepiece is a creative way to add character and functionality in a living room that lacks a fireplace. Source a glazed design to keep dust at bay and let your inner stylist loose by creating beautiful displays of your favourite books, photos and other treasures. Change with the shelfie action up with the seasons or to match upholstery updates in the room.

‘When sourcing a statement dresser, it’s important to choose a size that will give at least one meter of space surrounding the piece. This will stop it from feeling too cramped,’ advises interior designer Rudolph Diesel. ‘Be sure to add a decorative lamp or pendant light for some atmospheric lighting, and I’d recommend trying to colour co-ordinate the dresser with the style of the rest of the room.’

‘A well-executed autumn-themed tablescape should feel warm, inviting, and connected to nature,’ says Emily Dunstan, home buyer at Heal’s. 

‘Achieving balance is key, so avoid overwhelming the table with decorations and make sure there’s still plenty of space for passing food around – this is the season for entertaining after all!’

So let’s get this right with their tips on how to create a tablescape for autumn.  

1. Start with the colour palette

Google has recently seen an increase in searches for ‘autumn colour palette’ by 105%. And it’s no wonder as it’s key to authentic seasonal home decor ideas, as well as an autumnal tablescape.

‘Autumn is all about warm and inviting colours,’ says Sam Sutherland, interior stylist at Flitch. 'Incorporate rich hues like deep burgundy, forest green, and mustard yellow into your table setting through napkins, placemats, or even in the choice of vintage dishes.'

'Start with a neutral palette that you can easily build upon and update through the changing seasons,' suggests Emily from Heals. 'Introduce earthy autumnal tones through accents of burnt orange, deep yellow and olive green. Mix and match these with existing pieces to fashion a tablescape that is unique to your individual style.’

2. Layer tactile, natural materials

‘Layering different materials will add visual depth and interest to your tablescape,’ explains Emily. Think tablecloths, napkins, placemats and the like. When in doubt, choose natural materials to achieve that rustic autumnal vibe. A linen tablecloth is a good place to start as a canvas for the rest of your creation. 

‘Linen makes the perfect base for creating a forest-inspired tablescape - the rustic feel and look of linen adds beautiful texture,’ says Polkra founder, Freddie Crowther. ‘Add in rustic placemats from wicker or seagrass, metallic brass accents for your candle holders and beautiful velvet green or burgundy red ribbon as napkin bows.’ 

‘Add texture with vintage-inspired linens like lace or embroidered tablecloths,' advises interior stylist Sam. 'Use vintage-style chargers or placemats to create depth and dimension to a tablescape.’

And you don’t have to stop at the table. Why not consider the whole setting? ‘The setting itself should have plenty of texture for extra warmth, depth and interest, so consider a cushion or two for padding seats, or a selection of cosy throws for slinging over the backs of chairs for a relaxed yet considered appeal,’ suggests Emily.

3. Create intimate, cosy lighting

Take advantage of the shorter, darker days and lean in to a dimly-lit cosy and intimate atmosphere with the use of little wireless table lamps often seen in jazz clubs like our favourite Amazon wireless table lamp. Or candles, whether it be large scented ones or dinner candles set in black metal or brushed brass candle holders.    

‘As the nights start to draw in, warm lighting in the form of tealights, fairy lights, and candles can be a great way of representing the cosy feeling of the season,’ notes Vikki Irvine, brand manager at pottery brand Denby.

‘With these darker evenings lighting is so important, and to stay away from harsh bright lights we love to use a mix of candles and rechargeable lamps to create a cosy, moody atmosphere,' agrees Freddie.

4. Add natural fall foliage and seasonal veg

Bringing the outside in with foliage and seasonal produce used as decor is a great way of making a successful autumn tablescape.

‘Autumn will gravitate more towards natural elements like leaves and wood, so consider tying up your napkins with twine and add a fresh sprig of seasonal foliage for an easy yet effective finishing touch,' suggests Emily from Heals.

Meanwhile, interior designer Sophia decorates with gourds. ‘I love to stock up on wonky pumpkins, squashes and gourds which can be sourced at most supermarkets or boxes by the amazing Wonky Veg Boxes company. Bundle them up as a showstopping centrepiece on a white linen tablecloth for a rustic finish - it's so easy and can be used for everything from kitchen suppers to big dinner party soirees.’

‘Bring in elements of all the natural beauty the season has to offer,' concludes Vikki. 'Whether in the form of decorated pinecones, miniature pumpkins, or an autumnal bouquet, a natural element is a great way to add a true autumnal touch to the table.’

5. Vintage or vintage-inspired tableware

The current vintage-inspired tableware trend is closely tied to the autumn season. ‘There's a big trend for vintage tablescapes this autumn so why not add a nostalgic touch with lace, vintage dishes, and muted colours,’ advises Sophia.

A vintage vase or candlesticks (or both!) for your centrepiece will also look great.

‘We have seen a lot more innovation and playfulness in the glassware market,’ says Kirsten Corkish, designer at M&S Home. ‘The ribbed technique elevates a simplistic shape available in clear glass for our more traditional customer and smoked glass for those looking for something more modern.’

But soon after, more and more antique-style tableware pieces started to pop up in new collections of high street brands. And we’re very excited about this aesthetic entering the mainstream as we love a vintage kitchen idea.

‘The trend for vintage tableware comes from a desire to add warmth and character to dining experiences. People appreciate the nostalgia,’ says Sophia Ayrton-Grime, interior designer of Studio Raff. ‘I’ve seen so much interest in vintage floral patterns on plates, retro-coloured glassware and rustic wooden serving trays.’

Indeed, there is all of that, including bobble-trimmed dinner plates from Dunelm that fit right into the bobbin home aesthetic trend inspired by the 17th century style.

Pair with black metal candlesticks for a touch of elegance and romance. The flickering candlelight against the vintage glassware creates a captivating ambiance.’

She adds, ‘Layering is key to creating a visually interesting tablescape. Add texture with vintage-inspired linens like lace or embroidered tablecloths and use vintage-style chargers or placemats to create depth and dimension to a tablescape.’

And if you really want to lean into the autumn theme, then you can choose your dining room colour scheme accordingly. 

‘Autumn is all about warm and inviting colours. These colours will complement the vintage aesthetic while adding a touch of seasonal warmth,’ says Sam.

How to buy a second-hand mirror

When buying a second-hand mirror, Harriet says it's important to check the piece carefully for any damage. 

'Inspect the mirror for any cracks, chips or scratches,' she says. 'Minor imperfections are fine as long as they don't significantly affect the overall appearance.'

It's not just the glass you need to pay attention to, however; Harriet says it's also vital you 'check for hooks or mounting hardware, as this can be an additional cost'. 

Finally, Harriet advises you always 'measure the mirror, as well as the space at home where you intend to place it. There's nothing worse than falling in love with a piece that simply won't fit!'
