I’m becoming known around the office for my love of well-designed storage seating, whether that’s a storage sofa, a stool, an ottoman or a chair. So imagine my excitement when I came across Next’s Clemmie storage accent chair.

Recently, Next has been killing it with great small living room ideas – I still can’t get over the Next Crosby modular storage sofa, which remains one of my favourite storage and modular sofas I've tried. And yet, we all need plenty of storage space in our homes, especially when it comes to living room storage ideas.

Swyft has launched a new modular sofa design, and as a big fan of modular sofas, my interest was piqued as soon as I heard the news. Dubbed the ‘cloud sofa’, the Swyft Model 13 promises to be the most comfortable sofa the brand has ever made.

Swyft has already been making some of the best modular sofas for some time, including the Model 03 (which has earned the title of the best quick delivery sofa in our best sofas buying guide) and Model 06. However, while both of these models are comfortable, they are on the firmer side. They offer more support rather than the soft, sink-in feeling that many people are after, but that’s exactly what you’ll find in the new Model 13.

‘The Model 13 came from a really simple idea: create the comfiest sofa we’ve ever made, without compromising on Swyft’s clean, modern aesthetic,’ says John O’Leary, Swyft’s design director. ‘We were inspired by those ‘sink-in’ cloud-like designs you see in high-end interiors with big, billowy cushions and relaxed proportions, but we wanted to engineer it in a way that still felt refined, practical and genuinely liveable. It’s that balance between luxury comfort and everyday usability that really shaped the whole design.’

And crucially, for much less than those high-end designs, prices start at £2398 for a 3-seater size that can be split into two, going up to £6945 for a large corner sofa with a matching ottoman, perfect for living rooms that are on the bigger side or even cinema rooms.

I haven’t tried the sofa myself in person as of yet, but from mid next week, the Model 13 is going to be on display at Swyft’s London showroom, which opened in October. I encourage you to go and test it out for yourself, then – I know I'm going to.

But if you’re wondering how Swyft achieved that super soft and cushiony feel, John at Swyft explains, ‘Our goal was to design a sofa that people immediately exhale into. The feather and hollow fibre cushioning gives you that instant, enveloping comfort, while the softer arm structure means you can lounge without bumping into hard edges. We wanted it to feel cocooning, generous and indulgent, but not sloppy.’

Whenever I test out a new sofa, I always check how the armrests feel. Armrests are intended for your arms and head to rest on, so an overly hard armrest is not going to deliver the comfort factor. Who wants a hard edge digging into their neck when trying to relax on the sofa?! That’s why I’m so impressed with this sofa’s soft and comfortable armrest design.

Much like the rest of Swyft’s offering, this sofa can also be yours within 24 hours, depending on the chosen upholstery option, thanks to Swyft’s quick delivery service. Given that most sofas take weeks and sometimes even months to arrive, this is something I really appreciate about the company.

Overall, this is one of the few sofa designs I was really impressed with this season. And I can’t wait to see and feel it IRL soon – I’m going to report back once I do so, watch this space…

Shopping around for interior shoots means I have a bit of an eye for good value items that look like they cost more than they do. That applies to garden furniture too – nothing beats discovering a piece with designer looks that comes at a fraction of the price.

And with summer fast approaching, now's the time to invest in some new additions to give your garden an extra boost of style. With that in mind, I thought I'd show you a few finds that I've spotted over at Dunelm, which I've added to my list of one of the best places to buy garden furniture this year.

1. Clean your furniture down with natural cleaners

The first and easiest hack to making your outdoor furniture look like new is to give it a thorough clean using natural cleaning solutions. It can be tempting to use strong cleaning agents such as bleach to clean outdoor furniture, believing powerful chemicals are required to shift tough grime and dirt. But it’s better for the health of your furniture in the long run to use kind cleaners that won’t strip coatings, create chemical burns, or cause discoloration.

Alex Bridgman, CEO of Bridgman outdoor furniture, says, ‘At Bridgman, we believe garden furniture should offer enduring elegance as well as comfort, so keeping it looking in top form is essential. To achieve this, it’s best to avoid cleaning your outdoor furniture with harsh chemicals, as they can cause discoloration over time. A soft brush or cloth and a mild solution of warm water and a pH-neutral soap will remove most dirt without damaging finishes.’

The MR.SIGA Microfiber Cleaning Cloth Pack of 12 from Amazon are a great choice as the cloths are soft and won’t leave pieces of fluff on what you clean. Though if you’re cleaning furniture made from glass, the Purdy & Figg Microfiber Cleaning and Multipurpose Polishing Cloth Pack of 12 from Amazon may be more suitable for adding shine. Combine these with a neutral soap like the Frosch Neutral Cleaner from Amazon, and you’re all set to scrub your furniture.

Pro tip from Alex: Use a toothbrush to clean small nooks and crevices for a more effective, impressive-looking clean.

2. Remove any rust

If your metal outdoor furniture has developed rust, removing it is not only something that will make your pieces look better, but it’ll make them safer to use as well. It’s not ideal to sit on rusty furniture as it’s unhygienic as well as weakened from wear, so tackling rust as soon as possible is strongly recommended and will make your garden more inviting and relaxing.

Matthew Crawford, founder and head restorer at After Noah, says, ‘If your garden furniture is looking worse for wear, there are a few simple tricks to breathe new life into it. The trick to clean metal garden furniture is to remove loose rust first - using wire wool or a wire brush attachment on a drill works well. Once it’s smooth, apply a rust converter to stabilise any remaining corrosion, then follow up with a good quality metal paint (Hammerite is a solid choice) to protect it from future damage.’

This isn’t as tricky as it sounds: attach one of the Wire Brushes Set of 10pc from Amazon to the end of a drill, and hold it against the rust on your furniture to remove it through friction. Then, once the rust has been removed, apply some of the JENOLITE Rust Converter Spray from Amazon onto the areas where the rust was.

This will leave a protective, paintable layer and prevent any remaining rust particles from spreading. Lastly, you can optionally add a layer of metal paint designed to prevent rust. The Hammerite Metal Paint from Amazon comes recommended by Matthew, and no primer is needed to use the product.

3. Remove old finishes on wood

If your wooden outdoor furniture looks dull and weathered, making it look like new could be as simple as removing the old, worn coatings and stains and replacing them with new ones.

The team at Priority Polishes agrees, saying: ‘If your wood is looking tired and worn with marks etc., we recommend cleaning it back to bare wood by stripping it of its old coatings and stains.’

The simplest way to do this is to use something like the Paint Stripper + Wallpaper Scraper Set from Amazon to remove your furniture’s paint, coatings or varnishes, and then buff in some wood oil like the Rustins Original Danish Oil from Dunelm to bring vibrancy and moisture back to your wood. At a later date you can update it with a new coat of paint or varnish, depending on your desired aesthetic.

4. Sand out imperfections

Wooden outdoor furniture can get scratched and scraped without us even noticing it, making the pieces look worn over time. If the surfaces of your wooden furniture only have mild imperfections, these can be solved with merely two tools: sandpaper and wood stain or oil.

Sam Moseley, co-founder of Grain and Frame, says, ‘A simple but effective hack is sanding down the existing finish to remove scratches, stains, and discoloration, then reapplying a high-quality, weather-resistant wood stain or oil. Sanding smooths out imperfections and creates an even surface for the stain, enhancing both the color depth and protective qualities.’

Go over all of your wooden furniture’s surface with sandpaper, sanding with enough force to dull any existing sheen. Then, buff small amounts of wood oil or stain into the furniture using a microfiber cloth. Even if only part of your furniture requires attention, it’s best to sand over it all so one area doesn’t have a fresh coat of stain or oil and stand out from the rest.

5. Reupholster your soft furnishings

Old cushions and outdoor upholstery with dulled patterns or holes isn’t an uncommon sight, and you can try reupholstering them yourself - just keep in mind that they might not be fully waterproof anymore if you do. Another option is to invest in replacement outdoor cushions from Amazon, or Dunelm has some lovely options, which will be cheaper than replacing the whole piece of furniture..

Mike Durbridge, CEO of global design house Andrew Martin, says, ‘By replacing old, faded fabrics with the best outdoor fabrics and weather-proof materials, you not only restore the look of your furniture but also improve its comfort and longevity.’

In future, if you store your upholstered furniture or just the cushions away during bad weather, it should keep it looking brand new for even longer.

Having tried quite a few pieces of outdoor furniture myself, I know it’s difficult to find the best garden furniture at affordable prices. But Habitat is not the only brand that sells similar sling garden seating ideas to the chic IKEA HAVSTEN. I’ve searched high and low and found three other sling styles similar to the IKEA design.

As we find ourselves at the beginning of spring, now is the perfect time to buy garden furniture so that you’re ready once the sunshine and warm temperatures arrive. And the Tallak set from Habitat is the perfect budget-friendly yet expensive-looking option to go for.

Dark wood furniture has emerged as a big interior trend this year. Blonde wood is taking a back seat this year in favour of walnut, mango wood and mahogany furniture, but not everyone is a fan of this home decor trend.

I stumbled firsthand into the dark furniture debate when I showed the rest of the Ideal Home team a walnut mid-century style dining table I'd just bought from Dusk. It quickly revealed the divided opinion over dark wood furniture designs and how we feel about them.

Objectively the trend towards using dark wood in interiors has many pros going for it. It's easy to buy secondhand, has a lovely vintage feel and can look beautiful in a cosy living room or a bright kitchen. However, it does seem to come with a lot of baggage. The main issue was our team members' memories of their grandparents' homes crammed with overpowering dark wood pieces. It carries connotations of looking dated, overpowering and, let's face it, a bit on the ugly side.

While I agree that dark wood, particularly mahogany, can look dated and has a tendency to dominate the scheme in some settings, when paired with a rich dark green or navy blue and a few modern touches I'm a firm believer that it has the potential to look genuinely stunning.

It's the difficulty styling it up that's stopped Ideal Home's Kitchen Editor, Holly Cockburn, from being a fan of the dark wood furniture trend. 'As someone who grew up in a family home filled with dark wood furniture, it does have a special place in my heart. However, it's not something I would choose for my own flat. I love how dark wood furniture can look in large spaces, but for my north-facing living room and dining room it would make it look even drearier.'

Ideal Homes Room Decor Editor, Sara Hesikova, says she's actually been a surprise convert to the dark wood trend. 'I've always preferred the Scandi-style light wood. But ever since last year, I'm starting to see the beauty of dark wood and its 70s/mid-century modern edge,' she explains.

'Maybe it's because dark wood is actually one of the biggest home decor trends for furniture in 2025 and I'm just easily influenced. I've got a few dark wood furniture pieces dotted around my home and I think it looks pretty good, even mismatched with lighter wood pieces.'

Yes, whether you want to upcycle old furniture or paint IKEA furniture, it’s crucial to understand that you can’t rush the wooden furniture painting process. Poor preparation can result in brush marks and imperfections that will stand out like a sore thumb in your home, and rushing the job is a surefire way to ensure the paint chips or bubbles in just a few months.

That’s why I’ve asked decorating experts to share their 5 simple steps for painting wooden furniture, so you can follow this guide and guarantee a flawless finish every time.

Step-by-step

1. Prepare the painting space

Just like painting a wall or even painting a fence, painting wooden furniture can be a messy business - and it can also be harmful if you choose to tackle this easy DIY project indoors. So, first and foremost, you need to prepare your painting space.

If you can’t paint wooden furniture outside (or in a larger room such as a garage or shed), make sure you open up any windows and doors to ventilate the area and maintain a constant airflow.

Then, lay the furniture on a dust sheet like this 6 Pack Extra Large Dust Sheets for Decorating to cover your flooring.

You should also cover any nearby furniture if you want to protect it from any drips or spills. Alternatively, you could use any old bed sheets you have lying around for a cheaper option. And when you’ve prepared the area, you can move on to the next step.

2. Prepare the wooden furniture

Although you may be inclined to start painting as soon as possible, Jason Burns from FrogTape warns that moving too fast could result in common paint problems that may ruin your efforts. He says, ‘Preparation is key when it comes to painting wood. Heavy-grained wood, in particular, can be tricky due to its uneven and absorbent texture.’

First, you should remove any hardware from the furniture (if necessary), and then use sugar soap, AKA the decorator’s holy grail, to remove any lingering dirt or grime on the wooden furniture. This Volden Concentrated Liquid Sugar Soap from B&Q is my personal favourite, and can be wiped on using a clean cloth.

Then, Jason advises you to use a few squares of sandpaper to smooth the surface. He says, ‘If it is unfinished, lightly sand the surface to smooth out any rough spots or splinters. You will need to cut your sandpaper down to small sizes to ensure you get in any small gaps such as between spindles or around the top of legs.’

He adds, ‘If you are painting over existing paint or varnish, you will need a much coarser sandpaper as there might be chips and cracks in the paint or varnish. After sanding, wipe away dust with a damp cloth and let the surface dry.’

3. Apply a coat of primer

Next, you need to apply a coat of primer to your wooden furniture. And while you can buy 2-in-1 primers and paint, these limit your colour options and will never be as effective as a standalone primer.

As Jason explains, ‘Applying a primer before painting as this helps create a more even surface, and will make your job a lot easier if the wood is particularly absorbent.’ This will ultimately result in a smoother, flawless finish when painting wooden furniture.

You should only need to apply one coat of primer and although you don’t need to worry too much about painting the primer perfectly, you should try your best to apply an even coverage.

This is the case no matter what you’re painting, whether that be your kitchen cabinets or this Elsie 'Paint Your Own' Floor Lamp Base from Dunelm. Then, just wait for the primer to dry before moving on to the next step.

4. Choose the correct paint

Now you get to the fun bit of choosing the best paint for furniture. Of course, much of this next step is subjective, as you can either choose to opt for an emerging paint trend or your personal preference. Whatever you do, though, Emma Bestley, Creative Director and Co-Founder of YesColours suggests opting for eggshell paint during this stage.

She says, ‘Eggshell is always best when painting furniture as it offers a higher sheen than emulsion and is wipeable and hardwearing once dry. Once your furniture is prepped, think about how you want it to fit into the room you envision it in.’

She adds, ‘With small rooms, you can afford to go as bold as you like when upcycling furniture. Highly saturated colours look great in rooms decorated in a dark palette: try zesty shades of yellow, or a Majorelle-inspired blue. For punchier brights try uplifting shades of green or pink, or breathe life into neutrals and whites with ice-cream shades of lilac and peach.’

5. Get painting

With your paint colour chosen, you can then paint your wooden furniture. Don’t be tempted to use a roller for this step, though - especially if you want an even finish.

‘Use a smaller acrylic brush to apply the paint,’ advises Sophie Smith from Zhoosh Paints. ‘Even on larger pieces of furniture, a smaller brush will ensure you get the right amount of paint in the grooves, corners and joins.’

It’s also a good idea to apply two coats of paint during this step. And while how long you should wait between coats of paint will vary depending on the specific paint you use, it’s generally considered best practice to wait at least 24 hours between coats.

Just make sure you clean your paintbrushes when you’re done so you won’t have to buy more next time you want to paint wooden furniture.

FAQs

Should you paint furniture with a roller or brush?

Most experts would agree that you should paint furniture with a brush, as it will allow you to get into the smaller nooks and crannies and offer an all-around flawless finish.

However, that’s not to say that you can’t use a roller at all if you think it would serve you better. Rollers can be effective when painting larger pieces of furniture or bigger surface areas like wardrobe doors. Just be warned that you might not get the finish you’re after.

How do you paint wood furniture without brush marks?

The best way to reduce the chances of brush marks when painting wooden furniture is to prep the furniture before you start painting. By cleaning and sanding the wood beforehand, you can remove any imperfections that could be highlighted further when you paint.

When you’ve done this, you should then paint thin, even coats of paint and wait at least 24 hours before painting a second coat. If you’re not happy with the first coat of paint, it may be worth sanding any imperfections you see before painting again to ensure a smooth finish.

Habitat and Scion are no strangers to collaborating, and the Habitat x Scion garden furniture range has brought the fun side of the 70s home decor trend to the best garden furniture.

I have to say I’m a fan of the bold pattern choices, and given there are plenty of rules for pattern clashing, I think there are ways to mix and match the range - for example, the warm orange hue of the Mr Fox pattern would work nicely with the soft green Lintu print.

The Habitat x Scion garden furniture range has a wonderfully whimsical, kitsch feel to it. Alongside the colourful prints comes function. The chairs are crafted with sturdy wood, and dining and sofa sets are metal for added durability.

More often than not, garden furniture embraces practicality over colour and fun. Now this is not to say the Habitat x Scion garden furniture range has ignored being practical - it just hasn’t forgotten how to be fun.

‘Low-slung furniture is trending because it embodies the perfect balance of style and comfort. It creates a grounded, laid-back vibe that resonates with the modern desire for cosy yet design-forward living spaces. This year, people want their homes to feel inviting and effortlessly cool, and low-slung pieces deliver just that,’ comments Monika Puccio, Head Buyer at Sofa Club.

‘Choosing low-slung furniture helps create a relaxed, welcoming space to retreat to, which is essential after busy days in our modern fast-paced lifestyles,’ says Sebastian Clarke, Senior Designer at King Living.

‘Low-slung furniture brings a grounded, calming aesthetic that aligns with an increased focus on wellness and mindfulness. The low profile opens up spaces, creating a sense of flow and connection, which is ideal for compact or multi-functional rooms. Often crafted with wider, more generous seats, these pieces invite you to sink in and unwind.’

How to style low-slung furniture

When styling your low-slung furniture, the key is to focus on comfort - think of blankets and cushions, as the essence of this trend is all about creating a comfortable living space.

‘Layering textures can add depth and an extra layer of cosiness. Add cushions in a range of textures, a throw blanket, and place a rug beneath the piece to add warmth and create a finished look. Enhance the aesthetic with low coffee tables and pouffes for a cohesive effect, and use ambient lighting to create the ultimate cosy space,’ suggests Joana Sadovskaja, Interior Trends Expert at Lovesofas.

Low-slung furniture is often understated due to its height - perfect if you enjoy a space that doesn’t look ‘busy’.

'Low-slung sofas offer sleek, minimalist style that works in both modern and traditional spaces,’ says Sebastian.

Similarly, a low-level bed creates a minimalist Japandi look which is both relaxing and comfortable. Low-level coffee tables and chairs are less imposing, making a room look more spacious and less cluttered.

Overall this trend is encouraging us to slow down and embrace home comforts. Low-slung furniture is relaxing and sociable - perfect to escape the hassles of modern life.

Shop low-slung furniture

IKEA transformed how we buy furniture when it launched its first flatpacks in 1953. Since then it has become synonymous with clever design and affordability. While IKEA made owning a design classic accessible for homes across the world, there are a handful of IKEA pieces that have become so collectable that they can go for £1000s at auction.

We're not talking about the eternally popular BILLY Bookcase or the KLIPPAN sofa here, despite the fact they are both classics that were launched in the 70s. According to IKEA expert at online auction house Auctionet, the best IKEA investment pieces are usually discontinued dating back to the 1950s, 60s and 70s.

'These items are likely not available anymore, or may have only been sold for a short time before being discontinued, rendering them highly sought after because of their rarity,' explains Andreas Siesing, IKEA expert at Auctionet told Ideal Home.

The IKEA pieces to invest in

Many of these items can still be picked up when buying furniture second hand, and if you spot one Andreas' advice is to invest now and avoid using any IKEA hacks on it.

'We are likely just at the beginning of a massive price increase on IKEA investment items,' he explains. 'IKEA is highly skilled when it comes to preserving its history, and today you can even visit IKEA museums! Its rich history means the IKEA brand on the secondhand market will only become stronger.'

So which pieces should you keep your eyes peeled for?

1. The CAVELLI Chair

'Among IKEA's vast collection, there is one specific armchair considered the company's holy grail, and that is Bengt Ruda's CAVELLI. Only a few units were produced back in 1958, and most recently, one sold for over £10,000!' says Andreas.

In fact, a Bengt Ruda CAVELLI sold on Auctionet in November 2024 for that eye-watering price tag.

2. The Vilbert Chair

This particular chair was removed from the IKEA catalogue back in the 90s because it was almost impossible to sit on. It's rumoured to have only sold 3,000 units and was removed from the catalogue within a year.

However, Andreas explains that this rarity has made the VILBERT Chair worth around £700 second-hand.

3. The IMPALA Sofa

This sofa was designed in 1972 a few years before the cult KLIPPAN sofa. Andreas explains that IKEA's founder had predicted it would 'too difficult to manufacture and unsellable'. It proved him wrong for a few years but was retired from the collection.

'It fell into obscurity, costing a couple hundred pounds, when it occasionally appeared at auctions. However, recently, a well-maintained example was sold for over £2,000,' says Andreas.

This style of sofa and armchair is having a bit of a comeback with Habitat introducing the Scoop Chair for it's 60th anniversary collection, inspired by its own archives.

4. The TELEGONO Lamp

This entry into the list isn't strictly furniture, but the TELEGONO lamp was IKEA's first ever lighting offering. Launching in the 1970 IKEA catalogue it was designed by renowned Italian architect and industrial designer Vico Magistretti.

'In recent years, prices for this unique lamp have quadrupled and even quintupled. Well-maintained examples are hard to find,' explains Andreas. One of these lamps sold for £400 on Auctionet in January.

The colour and curved design are not miles away from the Varmblixt lamp that was launched in 2023 and was designed by Rotterdam-based designer Sabine Marcelis.

5. The PS Sofa

The PS collection which launched in the mid-1990s is evidence that it's worth keeping an eye on current IKEA collection for future investments pieces.

'It featured a range of products that were perhaps a bit more exclusive, with great care given to the selection. The concept was successful, and many models have seen a sharp rise in price in recent years. Nike Karlsson's sofa from 2012 has a record auction price of £1,000,' explains Andreas. 'Not bad for an IKEA piece that is so young.'

So next time your second hand shopping or clearing out a loft keep your eyes peeled for one of these hidden IKEA gems.

On first viewing of the property back in 2019, this 70s house was in need of re-decoration, plus the layout badly needed re-working, but despite the issues, the home owner could see it was full of potential.

‘The house was bright and airy, had large rooms and felt like a great blank canvas… and we were in it for the long game with this renovation,’ says home owner Laura Deller @houseprojectuk. ‘We loved the plot and knew that long term we could make it into an amazing family home.’

Kitchen

‘We began a phased renovation, starting with replacing windows, adding new electrics and having the walls re-plastered in the bedrooms at the back of the house.'

'We wanted to get the children’s rooms done first but it was cheaper for the plasterer and electrician to work on multiple rooms rather than just one room at a time, so we decided to do all the bedrooms at the same time.'

'Whilst this first phase was happening we all slept together on a mattress in the living room and, looking back, I’m amazed we got it all done in one month, but creating a nice space for the children was a priority.’

‘We then decided to re-jig the upstairs floor plan. There was a dark, narrow corridor leading to a small fifth bedroom with a window looking straight into the neighbour’s bedroom, and it was obvious that this room could be converted into a large en-suite.'

'Also, the airing cupboard and water tank were both in the master bedroom so needed relocating.’

The living room

‘After the first phase of the renovation we had a break for a few months, but by the summer of 2020, having endured lockdown and spent way too long in the burgundy-carpeted living room, we decided enough was enough.'

'As soon as tradesmen were allowed back inside, we had the room re-plastered, the old gas fire ripped out and a log burner installed.’

‘And then we finally got to pull up the old carpet, and although we revealed potentially gorgeous parquet flooring, there was so much missing that sadly it couldn’t be salvaged. Instead we decided to go for low maintenance laminate flooring in natural oak, laid in a stylish herringbone pattern.’

‘We also had the ceiling boarded up as an easy way to cover the artex, and we had the windows resized as they were originally huge, almost down to the floor, which made the front of the house look like a shop.’

The kitchen

‘Then it was time to tackle the 70’s kitchen which had seen updates in the early 90s but hadn’t retained any cool retro features plus the veneer on the units was peeling off.’

‘Although it took three years for us to get to this point, longer than we ever expected, the wait actually worked in our favour as it gave us plenty of time to see how we used the space, which in turn helped with the new layout.’

‘In the end we only extended the ground floor by 40 centimetres as by the time the garage and conservatory were incorporated into the space, we really didn’t need a bigger footprint.'

'Instead, we decided to raise the roof and go as high as legally allowed for a single-story extension, to give the room more air and light.’

‘I used an online space planner to design the kitchen as I knew exactly what I wanted for the look so didn’t need to use a professional kitchen designer. I chose dark, Shaker-style units that showed the grain, with lighter worktops to balance the look, and I chose a Wren design but sourced the worktop separately.’

‘I also added plenty of DIY panelling, brass accents and wooden accessories to soften the industrial look. Luckily this final faze of the renovation went well, though the builders were installing the large garden doors during storm Eunice, which was a bit hairy.’

‘This part of the kitchen is for drinks and dancing so I converted the bookcase into a cocktail cabinet and surrounded it with prints from my favourite independent illustrators and brands; the ‘Love Lives Here’ print, from The Native State, takes pride of place.’

‘Once the building works were finished I researched DIY tips and tricks so that I could furnish my home on a budget, and that included making the bespoke banquette seating in the dining room.'

'I panelled the wall myself and made the upholstered banquette simply by stapling moss-coloured velvet fabric, to large pieces of pre-cut foaming attaching it using No More Nails.’

‘The dining table, from Cult Furniture, and the chairs, £15 bargains from Facebook Marketplace, finish off the look, helped by hanging the oversized black light.’

Hallway

IKEA is offering to buy back your old furniture for an extra 25% more this month via its BuyBack scheme, instead of partaking in a traditional Black Friday sale.

The Swedish homeware giant first introduced the BuyBack and Re-sell scheme back in 2021 whereby shoppers could sell back their IKEA products to get in-store credit, making their next purchase more affordable. Products in good condition were then resold in the store’s Re-shop and Re-use section.

If you've been thinking about taking back in the scheme, now is the time to do it as IKEA is running a limited-time offer that means you could get more money for your old IKEA furniture. Between November 21^st until 2^nd of December 2024, all IKEA family members will receive an extra 25% on top of their normal estimated BuyBack price when selling items back to IKEA.

How does the BuyBack offer work?

Since the launch of BuyBack and Re-sell, IKEA has bought back furniture to the value of £3.4 million, which has all been given back to customers via gift cards.

The average buyback value of a piece of furniture at IKEA is £53, with an extra 25% from the buyback the average customer would receive £66.25. This is loaded onto an IKEA gift garden that can be used on new items or the Re-shop and Re-use site if you want to stretch your budget further or try out an IKEA hack.

All you have to do is simply get a quote for your item online before taking it to an IKEA store and receiving your gift card. To get the bonus 25%, you must return your item to an IKEA store between 21 November and 2 December.

There are some items that are not eligible for the scheme including beds, sofas/ armchairs, pillows, leather products or electrical items. Check the IKEA website for a full list of non-eligible products. Items that are suitable should be clean and unmodified, in good, resaleable condition, fully functional and assembled when returned.

When winter arrives, so does the annual battle against mould in our homes, but it turns out that moving your furniture just an inch away from your walls can help prevent mould growth.

Due to the rise of energy bills, many of us are avoiding turning the heating on as long as possible. But colder damper homes inevitably means mould may rear its ugly head this winter and sometimes this spreads to our furniture.

Replacing furniture, especially if you've got one of the best sofas on the market, can be costly and while there are ways to clean mould off fabric, prevention is always better than cure.

Which is why experts have revealed that moving your furniture one inch away from your walls can stop the growth of mould on them. But how exactly does this work?

Why should you move furniture

Moving your furniture an inch away from your walls is one furniture trick to make your room feel warmer as it works to improve airflow around your room - reducing damp and condensation in the process.

‘Mould thrives in damp, poorly ventilated conditions, so in winter when we have all of our windows and doors tightly closed to keep the heat in, we're trapping the moisture inside,' explains Sam Tamlyn, managing director at window shutter suppliers Shutter Store. 'Then the condensation forms when warm air meets cold surfaces like walls or windows, creating a damp environment where mould can easily grow.'

'Placing furniture, whether that be your favourite sofa, cabinet or curtain, directly against walls limits airflow. Without air circulation, moisture from the walls becomes trapped behind furniture, creating a humid space for mould to grow.'

‘External walls and those near poorly insulated windows are especially prone to condensation, heightening the risk. Moving furniture even just an inch from the wall encourages airflow, allowing the moisture to evaporate instead of just being trapped behind furniture.’

What else can I do?

If you have a small living space, moving furniture away from the walls is not always possible. Monika Puccio, Head of Buying at Sofa Club, explains what to do if moving your furniture away from walls is not an option.

‘If placing your sofa against a wall is unavoidable, then opt for an interior wall rather than an exterior one, as exterior walls tend to be colder and more prone to condensation.'

‘Investing in a dehumidifier is another effective solution. It helps to reduce moisture levels in the room, making it less likely for mould to reappear. Beyond mould prevention, dehumidifiers also work to improve air quality by reducing dust and allergens, which can benefit your health, especially those who suffer from allergies.'

‘As mould thrives in damp environments, ensure any spillages are immediately cleaned up and the area is allowed to dry thoroughly - this will reduce the chances of mould growth.’

1. Make your own scented spray

While you can use essential oils for cleaning and even to keep clothes moths at bay, you can also use essential oils to make your own spider-repellent scented spray. After all, spiders actively avoid strong fragrances - meaning they should also avoid your garden furniture if you’re clever enough.

By making a scented spray, you can spritz this onto your garden furniture and ward off spiders. You just need to make sure that you top it up every now and then (especially after it rains) to ensure the spiders stay away.

But what scents should you use? Alan Murphy, store manager, at OutdoorLiving.ie explains, ‘Spiders dislike certain scents, such as peppermint, tea tree and eucalyptus. Mix water with essential oils like peppermint, and spray it onto the furniture with a clear spray bottle.’

Creating a mixture of white vinegar and water can also ward off any spiders. Plus, it'll help you clean your garden furniture at the same time.

2. Plant spider-repelling plants nearby

If you have space around your garden furniture for plants, this can also work in your favour. In fact, many of the plants that slugs hate are also despised by spiders.

Outdoor furniture expert Ryan Kaila from Kingfisher Direct explains, ‘To avoid spiders on your outdoor furniture, place an abundance of spider-repelling plants nearby. Basil, lavender and mint are plants popularly known for repelling spiders due to their strong fragrance.’

He adds, ‘Not only will these plants repel spiders, but they are visually appealing and provide a pleasant fragrance throughout your garden.’

As these plants all grow well in pots, you could also create a small container garden if you want to keep spiders off the garden furniture on your balcony or patio.

3. Choose your furniture wisely

The best garden furniture comes in so many shapes and sizes, but what you might not realise is that some garden furniture is more appealing to spiders than others. So, if you’re in the market for some new pieces, you should know what to avoid.

‘When choosing your garden furniture, avoid intricate designs that have a lot of crevices as this can make the perfect hiding spot for spiders,' explains Ryan. 'For example, furniture made from rattan is ideal for spiders as they burrow in between the crevices where the rattan interlocks.’

For this reason, it’s better to stick to the best wooden or metal furniture. Ryan is particularly fond of cedar wood for keeping spiders at bay.

‘Cedar is a strong spider repellent. Therefore, investing in cedar wood furniture can be beneficial to avoid spiders,’ he says. ‘If after a period of time, the scent of your cedar wood becomes less prominent, you can sand down the furniture. This will bring the scent back and ensure that it continues to repel spiders.’

However, it’s also believed that eucalyptus and acacia wood also have a strong scent that should be able to ward off these creepy crawlies.

4. Remove them manually

If you don’t mind getting your hands dirty, one of the best ways to keep spiders off garden furniture is to remove them manually. Of course, you don’t actually have to touch the spiders if you don’t want to, as there are many tools out there that can help you out.

In fact, Ideal Home’s Senior Digital Editor, Jenny McFarlane, uses a spider catcher to keep the spiders at bay both inside and outside her home. She says, ‘My go-to is the type with the quick draw brush that safely nestles and lifts them to a preferable spot - AKA away from me! They’re also more humane than the spider catcher vacuum.’

Yes, avoid killing the spiders if you can. Simply moving them elsewhere should do the trick. And while you’re at it, it’s also a good idea to remove the cobwebs and clean your garden furniture regularly so the spiders don’t have anything to come back to.

‘Make sure that you take time in the summer to regularly sweep off any spider webs and wipe down your garden furniture,' advises Alan. 'Just five minutes every other day doing this can help you to keep on top of it and avoid lots of frantic checking that there are no spiders on your furniture before guests come round.’

Most of the time, spiders will invade your garden furniture when you’re not there. They’ll take advantage of the fact that they have direct access to the cushions and crevices, and they’ll make a home for themselves in no time.

Will WD-40 keep spiders away?

Technically, the smell of WD-40 can keep spiders away, but we wouldn’t recommend using it. That’s because the thick, lubricant nature of the solvent can kill the spider - which is unnecessary.

By using WD-40, you risk drowning the spider, as the liquid will coat the entire animal and potentially prevent its ability to breathe.

As there are so many other ways to keep spiders away, it’s not worth using WD-40 for this task. Instead, opt for a more natural alternative that won’t kill them.

But taking a look at the soon-to-be-launched range, we reckon it would work equally well for people who have never played a game in their life!

There are an enormous 20 items to watch out for in the new BRÄNNBOLL range, and it’s IKEA’s first-ever furniture collection specifically aimed at gamers.

The Swedish brand explains that the range is designed to help facilitate game-play wherever you are in the home – and to make it as comfortable as possible.

'With BRÄNNBOLL, we are embracing the idea that gaming is for everyone and belongs everywhere in the home. It's about making it simple for people to create spaces that adapt to gaming, living, and everything in between,' says Philip Dilé, Product Design Developer at IKEA of Sweden.

While that’s all true, we’d argue that the BRANNBOLL collection is actually ideally suited to anyone who just wants more versatile furniture options at home; be that for working, watching movies, or socialising with friends and family members. 

After all, IKEA explains that many of the new pieces are multi-functional, and are designed to be easily picked up and carried across the home to adapt to different spaces. While they explain that this is designed to create an 'immersive gaming environment', it'll just as easily help you to use every room of your home however you choose to.

So what items can you expect to find in the new range?

While we’re not yet sure of prices, the collection is based around comfort and seating, and one particular highlight is an inflatable armchair with an on-trend beanbag-style shape. There is also an armchair with a folding seat to make the ultimate lounging spot for gaming, but it could easily be a bold addition to a reading corner idea.

Another key item of furniture in the collection is the gaming station, which is the ultimate versatile piece. IKEA explain that not only will it provide a foldable tabletop, but it also gives games (or workers) PC tower storage, and even handy cable management options!

We also like the sound of a storage basket that doubles as a self-standing table that you can move between rooms, and a selection of ergonomic chairs to support a range of seating positions.

And of course, like any good IKEA collection, there will also be a range of soft accessories to make your gaming space – or any space – a supremely comfortable spot in which to while away a few hours. Customers can look forward to vibrantly colourful, athleisure-style rugs, throws, and mousepads, to complete their look at home.

 There’s still a little while to wait for this exciting collection, with IKEA explaining that it will be in stores worldwide from September 2024.

Interior designer, Kelly Hoppen, has ruffled some feathers in a recent TikTok video of hers where she spoke plainly about interior choices she believes are an 'absolute no' in the home.

Furniture placement is already a huge topic within interior design, but Kelly was extremely candid about how furniture should 'never' be placed at an angle unless you're specifically furnishing a corner. That means keeping your living room sofa ideas free from the asymmetry that angles bring to a living space.

'One of my pet hates is furniture on an angle,' says Kelly in the TikTok video. 'It has never been designed to be at an angle unless it's in a corner. Always have things straight. They can be off-centred together but never at an angle.' She notes that one of the only exceptions to this rule is when you're putting a chair in front of a fireplace, but even then she cautions fans to 'be careful' with this.

While angled furniture and chopped cushions are at the top of Kelly's interior icks list, we were curious to know what other interior designers thought of the sentiment – and whether this was a living room mistake to avoid in the name of Feng Shui, or a dated belief worth overruling.

'Conversations around furniture placement and the art of Feng Shui have gained a large following in recent years, with many people looking to seek inspiration on optimising their home,' begins Victoria Foster, interior stylist at ScS.

'When deciding on the placement and orientation of furniture there are a lot of factors to consider, such as the size and shape of your room or the dimensions of the furniture you are considering the placement of. You should also think about the function of the room on a day-to-day basis, including how many people will be using it.'

However, with all the different ways you can arrange furniture in a living room and around your home in general. Is there a right and wrong way?

'Placing furniture on an angle can sometimes be seen as a faux pas when it comes to traditional interior design. However, I believe there is space for it in the modern world,' says Sam Greig, senior designer and interior expert at Swoon.

'For example, placing a TV stand in the corner of the room so that all seats have a great view, or angling a floor-length mirror against a wall as a stylish yet functional accessory.'

'We must remember that functionality is a huge part of interior design, and sometimes it isn't worth breaking your neck to follow the old-school rulebook perfectly,' Sam concludes.

Following this argument, Maya Saltafi, designer and founder of Maya Saltafi Designs Ltd adds that her stance on angled furniture also conflicts that of Kelly Hoppen's. She explains that angling furniture can 'redirect a space's flow, inject grandeur into a more compact room or, inversely, adroitly being intimacy to a zone that otherwise feels too broad.'

'Angling selective pieces can equally soften hard edges such as a sofa back, whilst deftly exhibiting unconventional room configurations – showcasing how furniture can be dictated by (and honour) its surrounding architecture,' Maya explains.

So, if you're after a cosy living room configuration or are trying to make a small living room look expensive, perhaps angling is the way to go.

However, suppose you're curious why Kelly Hoppen is on team 'no furniture angling'. In that case, interior designer Ann Marie Cousins of AMC Design explains why keeping your furniture straight has been so widely desirable in many homes.

'When thinking about your furniture layout, try to create as much symmetry as possible, and remember to identify the focal point of the room,' she advises . 'One of the reasons why furniture at an angle is such a problem is that it generally throws off this symmetry and creates strange traffic areas, where you have to zigzag around the area.'

'Symmetry is very soothing to the eye and very restful, which is why it's been such a mainstay of interiors throughout the ages,' she notes. Echoing Kelly Hoppen, Ann Marie explains that unless you're putting an armchair by a living room fireplace, or similar, avoid placing furniture at a complete angle.

7 things to know before making pallet garden furniture

‘Using pallets and repurposing them into furniture pieces is pretty common at the moment, not only because it seems to be trending but also because it's been discovered as a cheap alternative to buying expensive furniture. However, as pallets aren't exactly designed to be used as furniture, there are a few things you need to be wary of before you start turning any pallets into furnishings,’ explains Steve Chilton, garden expert at LeisureBench. 

1. Always inspect the pallets first

Making your own pallet furniture is one of the best budget garden ideas out there. That’s because you can often pick up the main components (the pallets) for free.

That’s exactly what Vanessa Price, from @vanessa_inthe_cotswolds, did. She told us, ‘We chose to build pallet furniture as we like the rustic look of it over new wood and anything we could buy. If you can get the pallets free it makes it even cheaper for furniture that lasts for many years. We got our pallets free from free sites on Facebook and local websites.’

And while you can easily do the same, it’s important to make sure the pallets are in good shape before you take them home with you. Steve explains, ‘Always inspect the pallets for damage, and choose the best-looking pallets. Pallets with wood rot, mould, signs of wear and tear etc, are not suitable to be turned into furniture.’

Because of this, it might take you a little while to search for the perfect pallets, but it’ll be worth it in the end. 

2. Dismantling pallets requires special tools

Although you can fashion your own outdoor seating area or coffee table from full, intact pallets, dismantling them first allows for more flexibility in your design. However, this is easier said than done. 

‘It’s surprising how much you actually have to dismantle the pallets before building the furniture,’ says Vanessa. ‘You can buy a special tool that removes the nails from the pallets, and this saves a lot of time and effort, so worth the investment.’

This is something that award-winning artist and content creator Theresa Gromski also discovered when she made her incredible outdoor pallet coffee table. She told us, ‘To get the pallet dismantled, use a special tool called a pallet breaker or lifting bar. You can also use a claw hammer. You’ll also need to remove any nails using either pliers or a claw hammer.’

3. You’ll need to sand the wood

Unless you’re actively looking for that rough-and-ready look (with a few splinters thrown in for good measure), you’ll probably need to sand the wood of your pallets before making your pallet garden furniture. 

Steve explains, ‘Naturally, pallets are rough and sharp in places, meaning you're going to have to do a lot of sanding to make sure the pallets are good for furniture use. Garden furniture that you buy ready-made is sanded so that it's smooth to the touch and won't cause injury, so it's important that you do the same when making your own furniture.’

‘An industrial sander is a great option, but hand-sanding is also possible (despite this probably taking quite a bit of time). You can choose to have your pallet furniture un-sanded, but just be aware that this could make it dangerous.’

Because of this, we’d suggest using something like this Black + Decker Mouse Sander with 10 Accessories from Argos to make things as easy as possible. 

4. It’s best to use screws instead of nails

The beauty of pallet furniture is that it’s incredibly versatile and completely bespoke to your outside space. But anyone who has ever made pallet garden furniture will tell you that the finished product can be incredibly heavy, which can make moving it around incredibly difficult. 

That’s why Vanessa suggests using screws instead of nails when making your pallet furniture. She says, ‘It’s a good idea to use screws, not nails, because of ease to take it apart if needed, and we have needed to several times, as it is too big and heavy to move in one piece.’

So, make sure you stock up on some nails before you put on your DIY hat. 

5. Paint the pallets before assembling

If you were to search for some of the best wooden garden furniture, there’s a high chance that you’ll come across pieces that are primarily brown in colour. If you make your own pallet furniture, however, you can paint your garden furniture any colour you want, and even add painted patterns into the mix. 

If you plan to do this, you should always try to paint the pallets before assembling if you can. This is something that Vanessa didn’t do the first time around.  

‘The biggest piece of advice is to paint the pallets first before you put it together (that’s if you are painting it),’ she says. ‘Once it is built it is difficult to get to all the slats to paint. We made this mistake and built it all together first, and then we had to take it apart to get to parts of it.’

Of course, you also need to make sure that you’re using the right kind of paint for the job and give yourself enough time to complete this job (ideally, on a sunny day when there’s no chance of rain). 

Vanessa said, ‘We used an outdoor wood paint like Cuprinol Shades. It has lasted four years. Choose your colour carefully, as I wouldn’t want to do it again anytime soon. Painting it was the most time-consuming part, as it takes several coats and is very fiddly.’ 

6. You’ll need to seal it

Unless you plan on covering your homemade pallet furniture with outdoor furniture covers when you’re not using it, you’ll definitely need to seal it. 

Steve explains, ‘If you're having your pallet as a table or seating arrangement outside, then you'll need to protect the wood with a stain or varnish in order to protect it from the elements of the outdoors. It's important not to forget this step, otherwise, you'll find that your pallets don't last as long as they should.’

Thankfully, there are a few different options when it comes to sealant, as Theresa adds. ‘Depending on the look you want you can leave it natural, wax it, use a clear varnish or wax or stain or paint it. I’ve done all of these.’

When making her outdoor coffee table, Theresa used a clear varnish to protect it and give it an extra shine. If you want to do the same, you can use something like this Ronseal Yacht Varnish Clear Gloss from B&Q.

7. The opportunities are endless

Sure, it may be easier to buy off-the-shelf garden furniture - but making your own pallet furniture will save you money and allow you to create something bespoke for your garden.

For example, you could make an outdoor table to match store-bought chairs you already have sitting in the shed, or you could go all out and make your own pallet tables and chairs from scratch.

Can you put garden furniture on grass?

‘It’s possible to place garden furniture on grass, but there are several reasons why it may not be the best surface for your outdoor furniture,’ explains Caron Grant, Brand Manager at Bridgman.

Steve Chilton, garden expert at LeisureBench, says, ‘By putting heavy garden furniture directly on the grass, you risk killing or damaging the grass underneath it. The weight of the furniture will compress the grass down and will eventually create either bare patches of lawn or yellow/brown patches where the grass is dead.’

Not only can this ruin the aesthetic of your garden, but it can also add more jobs to your to-do list. You may find yourself constantly overseeding your lawn in an effort to regrow dead grass, and it’s likely that you’ll struggle with lawn drainage issues as a result. 

If that isn’t enough, Lucie Bradley, Greenhouse and Gardening Expert at Two Wests & Elliot, says, ‘Thin metal legs can start to sink into the soft grass over time, making your lawn uneven.’ This means that you may have to get your hands dirty in an effort to level your lawn - especially if you have metal outdoor furniture. 

Putting garden furniture on your grass won’t just damage your grass, though. It also has the potential to damage the garden furniture itself. 

‘I would never recommend putting certain types of garden furniture directly on grass,’ says Steve. ‘For example, rattan garden furniture should never be placed on grass as when the grass gets wet, it can damage the legs of the furniture.’

In fact, that’s one of the reasons why you should never use a pressure washer on certain types of garden furniture. And it’s not just rattan you should avoid putting on the grass, either. 

Lucy explains, ‘Wood furniture is most at risk of becoming damaged. Wood absorbs moisture and dirt which could stain the wood, make it mouldy or cause the wood to split. Metal furniture wouldn’t be affected similarly, but it could begin to rust if left out for a long time. Plastic or resin furniture won’t absorb moisture, but it is likely to be stained by being sited on damp grass – especially if it’s light-coloured.’

And as garden furniture can be a big investment, it’s just not worth the risk of putting it on your garden furniture. 

How to minimise lawn damage caused by garden furniture

Of course, we understand that some of us have no choice but to put garden furniture on grass. But if you don’t have a patio or only have a tiny slither of grassy outdoor space, there are ways you can minimise lawn damage caused by garden furniture. 

Use furniture caps: Caron says, ‘If grass is the only surface you have to work with, you can invest in rubber stops or plastic caps to help prevent your furniture from sinking into the grass, this is especially helpful after heavy rainfall.’ These Sayayo Non-Slip Rubber Feet for Garden Furniture Chairs from Amazon should do the trick.

Choose lightweight furniture: As you can imagine, the heavier the garden furniture, the bigger the impact it will have on your grass. So, it’s always a good idea to opt for lightweight furniture instead. Lucie says, ‘Opt for high-quality pieces treated to resist moisture and lightweight options like plastic are less damaging than wood or metal.’ She also says, ‘Choose furniture with wider legs or feet to distribute weight and prevent sinking into the grass.’

Move it around regularly: If you’re going to put garden furniture on grass, you should avoid keeping it in the same place for weeks on end. Lucie explains, ‘Moving garden furniture weekly can minimise grass damage. While leaving furniture in the same spot for a few days won't cause permanent harm, prolonged placement throughout the summer might result in sacrificing some grass health for enjoyment.’

Use temporary outdoor flooring: If you only plan on putting your garden furniture on your grass temporarily (say, for a big family BBQ), then it’s probably worth your while using temporary outdoor flooring like these Black Interlocking Floor Tiles from B&Q. How to use a pressure washer to clean a patio

Over the winter months, dirt and grime from the wind and the rain will undoubtedly build up on your patio. This will result in discolouration and staining and can make what is often a very expensive patio look worn and unloved. So, knowing how to clean a patio is key.

While you can clean a patio without a pressure washer, using a pressure washer will always be more effective. If you're concerned about how much water a pressure washer uses, then you might find it's less than you think, anyway.

1. Prep the area

‘Pressure washers are seen as essential tools for cleaning patios, garden stones, gravel and pebbles,' explains Tom Clifford, director of Garden Stone. ‘Not only does it help to remove dirt, moss and algae build-up, but it also revitalises the appearance of your outdoor spaces by brightening it up and deep cleaning.'

But before you make the most out of your pressure washer, you need to prep the area - and you need to prep yourself. 

If you haven’t already, learn how to kill weeds so that you can remove them (and the full root) from the grout, and finish by brushing any loose debris using a garden broom. 

As pressure washers can be dangerous, you should also ensure that you protect yourself when using this piece of kit. Tom says, ‘Always wear protective gear when using a pressure washer, such as goggles and gloves.’

Wearing closed-toe shoes won't go amiss, either. 

2. Choose your cleaning agent

One of the biggest perks of a pressure washer is that it can be used as a stand-alone cleaner, and the combination of pressure and water alone should be enough to clean your patio. However, you could also add a cleaning agent into the mix if you wanted to. 

Many of the best patio cleaners can be used with a pressure washer, and they will ensure an even deeper clean. These can be used either within the pressure washer tank itself, or you could pour them onto the patio before spraying with the pressure washer. 

Just make sure that you consult your pressure washer’s instruction manual to double-check that it's suitable before you buy anything. Tom echoes this, saying, ‘Only use appropriate detergents with the pressure washer to ensure optimal performance.’

3. Set up the pressure washer

When you’ve prepped the area and chosen your cleaning agent, you then need to set up the pressure washer. 

While all pressure washers are different, you should typically start by attaching the high-pressure hose that comes with the garden gadget and then attach your own garden hose to the other side of it. Then, you can attach the other end of the garden hose to your outside water tap. 

Afterwards, set up the spray gun and plug the pressure washer into the nearest mains plug socket (but make sure it’s still turned off on the actual appliance). Then, turn on the water tap and press the trigger. This will flood the pressure washer with water, creating a high-pressure flow of water that is ready to go as soon as you press the ‘on’ button.

Of course, always check your instruction manual for the exact set-up process. 

4. Choose the right nozzles and attachments

Most pressure washers come with multiple nozzles and attachments. With this in mind, you need to make sure you choose the right nozzles and attachments to clean a patio.

Tom has offered some guidance on this. ‘On small, delicate surfaces (pebbles) = Low pressure, wider nozzle. Tough stains on concrete or paving stones = Higher pressure, more well-concentrated nozzle.’

However, it’s important to note that this isn’t a one-size-fits-all guide. Nick adds, ‘If you’ve recently invested in a pressure washer, I would recommend playing around with the different pressure settings as this is crucial to ensure effective cleaning without damaging surfaces.’

‘Most pressure washers will come with adjustable pressure settings, spray nozzles and interchangeable tips. First, I would advise reading the user manual provided by the manufacturer, as this will provide specific instructions and guidelines for your particular pressure washer model.’

5. First, test a small area

When you’ve prepared the area and chosen the right attachment, you may want to get cracking right away. But you should always test a small area of the patio first to avoid ruining your patio idea in the process. 

‘Always test a small area to gauge the level of pressure needed and adjust accordingly,’ explains Tom. This is especially important if your patio is made from softer stone that could be damaged by water pressure that’s too high or too concentrated.

This test patch is also a great chance to see whether you’ve used enough cleaning agent. 

6. Clean the rest of the patio

If you’re confident that you’ve chosen the right level of pressure, you can then clean the rest of the patio. 

While you don’t necessarily need a technique to do this, most experts would advise that you work in a sweeping motion, overlapping your cleaning area as you do so. 

You should also make sure that you get into the corners so that you can clean every nook and cranny. Just ensure you don’t get too close to the pressure washer yourself. 

Tom says, ‘Always stand back from the pressure washer and keep a safe distance from the surface you're cleaning.’

Then, allow it to dry and enjoy your clean patio! 

How to use a pressure washer to clean garden furniture

Although pressure washers are perfect for cleaning patios, you can also use a pressure washer to clean the best garden furniture. This is a great way to give them some TLC before the spring and summer months and to keep them free from mould, mildew, and even rust. 

Knowing how to clean garden furniture and what the most durable type of garden furniture is is key when it comes to using this gardening appliance, though. 

1. Assess the material

‘A pressure washer can be a great investment for cleaning your garden furniture, due to the fact that it can quickly and effectively clean up a lot of dirt, mud and even mildew,’ explains Steve Chilton, garden expert at LeisureBench.

However, you really need to assess the material of your garden furniture before using a pressure washer on it. This is especially true if you have some of the best wooden garden furniture. 

Steve says, ‘When it comes to softer materials such as wood and wicker, I wouldn't recommend using a pressure washer unless it has a really low-pressure setting and a wide-angle nozzle. This is because it can damage the material of the furniture, which isn't worth it.’

‘When it comes to harder pieces of outdoor furniture such as metal or plastic furniture, you can use your pressure washer on a higher setting with a narrow-angle nozzle. This means that your pressure washer is more precise, and it'll be more effective on this kind of outdoor furniture.’

All is not lost if you have wooden garden furniture, though.

2. Inspect your furniture

If you have harder garden furniture that a pressure washer can clean, it’s also important to inspect your furniture before you decide that it’s the best course of action. 

In fact, this is essential for those with old garden furniture or those who don’t use garden furniture covers. 

‘Before using your pressure washer on anything, I always recommend inspecting the furniture for any cracks, chips, loose screws or any other piece of damage that could be made worse by the intense force of a pressure washer,’ advises Steve. 

‘If you think your furniture has some of this damage already, make sure to avoid the affected areas of the furniture, or simply wash the whole thing by hand instead just to be safe.’

3. Set up the pressure washer

This step is the same, no matter whether you’re using a pressure washer to clean a patio or your garden furniture. So, scroll back up to see how you should properly set up a pressure washer for this task. 

4. Test a small section

Just as you would if you wanted to use a pressure washer to clean a patio, you should also test a small section if you want to use a pressure washer to clean garden furniture. 

And while there are some impressive garden furniture deals out there, this testing process will ensure that you don't have to throw away your old garden furniture prematurely. 

Steve says, ‘You should also do a small test of your pressure washer before you use it on the whole item by using it on a small, inconspicuous section of the furniture. If the pressure washer damages this small section, then don't use it on the rest of the piece.’

5. Continue the process

When you’re 100% confident that it’s safe to continue the process, you can then clean the rest of your garden furniture with the pressure washer. 

Make sure you keep the pressure to a minimum, and don’t be afraid to put the pressure washer down and clean your garden furniture by hand if you need to - especially if you want to get into small corners. 

Then, let the furniture air dry before using it again. 

6. Clean and store your pressure washer correctly

If you want to continue making the most of your pressure washer to clean your patio or your garden furniture, you need to take care of the gadget that’s doing the cleaning for you. 

Because of this, you need to make sure that you clean it as often as you can and store your pressure washer correctly.

Steve says, ‘Pressure washers need to be cleaned and maintained regularly in order to make sure that you're getting the right strength every time. If your pressure washer is dirty and clogged up, then it's likely your water pressure won't be as strong. I recommend keeping it somewhere dry, preferably inside, away from the elements outdoors.’

Yes, you should turn the water on before starting a pressure washer. You should also make sure that your pressure washer is plugged in at the mains before you turn on the water. 

When you’ve turned the water on, you should then press the pressure washer trigger while it’s still turned off. This will allow the garden gadget to fill with water, ready for when you turn it on and use it for the first time. 

Can you pressure wash with a garden hose?

Yes and no. While you can buy hose attachments to clean patios and garden furniture, they’re rarely going to be as powerful. Most pressure washers offer around 2,000 PSI of cleaning power, while the average pressure from a garden tap offers around 40 to 60 PSI of power.  

A won’t improve that PSI at all, but a pressure washer can. So, if you want to improve the cleaning power, a pressure washer is definitely a better choice.

But how do you clean mould off wood? We’ve consulted with the experts and have put together the ultimate guide on how to do this. Plus, we've outlined what tools you’ll need to get the job done.

Why does mould grow on wood?

Mould thrives in damp, poorly ventilated spaces where humidity levels are high, making wood, especially untreated or porous wood, a prime target.

‘Mould appears on wood as it is a natural source of cellulose - this is a food for mould. Wood exposed to moisture or high humidity then creates the perfect conditions for mould to grow,’ explains cleaning expert Nicola Rodriguez, AKA @essexhousedolly. Thankfully, this is easy to clean as long as you follow the step-by-step process below.

Bathrooms, kitchens, and basements are common culprits, but any area with persistent moisture can create the perfect environment for mould to flourish. If it's left unchecked, mould can stain or weaken wooden surfaces, so it’s really important to act quickly.

'It takes just 24-48 hours for mould spores to develop and if the humidity rises above 60 to 65%, you can see signs within 24 hours,' adds Jimmy Englezos, Senior Brand Manager from Ronseal.

'Whilst many look for mould in the more obvious areas in the home affected by condensation such as the bathroom and kitchen, the trickier to clean areas such as wooden skirting boards can go unnoticed.'

Signs that mould has affected wood

We asked Jimmy Englezos, Ronseal's Senior Brand Manager:

• 'Discolouration: Wood affected by mould can become discoloured with patches of green, black or brown on the surfaces which can spread if left untreated.
• Musty odour and damp smell: If affected by mould, the area will have a distinct musty odour and damp smell.
• Fuzzy or slimy texture: The area can have a fuzzy or velvety texture if affected by mould. Fuzzy growth is a strong indicator of mould infestation.'

Step-by-step

1. Protect yourself and your home

'The first step when it comes to removing mould from wood is making sure you’re properly protected, as cleaning mould can throw spores into the air that you don’t want to come into contact with,' explains Kenny Macfarlane, Managing Director of Handrail Creations.'You should be wearing gloves, goggles, a face covering, and a jumper or long-sleeved shirt to minimise your exposure.'

Also, if you can, do this cleaning task outside in your garden or in a well-ventilated area. But if you can’t, make sure you cover any surrounding surfaces and furniture with dust sheets or old bedsheets to stop the spread of these mould spores.

In fact, we’d suggest plugging in one of the best air purifiers to catch the mould spores as soon as they’re agitated.

2. Vacuum the mould

It may seem strange to vacuum wood, but this is actually one of the best ways to get off any loose mould spores. Ideally, you should use a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter, as this will successfully catch the mould spores and stop them spreading elsewhere.

Steve Chilton, garden expert at LeisureBenchsuggests, ‘Start by lightly vacuuming the surface of the wood to remove any loose mould, as well as excess dirt and dust. Make sure to empty your vacuum after this to remove any mould spores that have been sucked up. If a vacuum isn't suitable for this, I recommend gently wiping down the loose mould with a cloth.’

When you’ve successfully vacuumed over the surface of the wood, immediately empty the dust canister into the bin. Then, take the bin bag out to your kitchen bin and pop it in your dustbin outside.

3. Clean the surface with soapy water

After vacuuming the loose mould spores, you can then get to work on cleaning the mould that remains on the wood. For both treated and untreated wood, you can use a mixture of warm water and washing-up liquid for this step.

Simply brush this mixture onto the wood with a soft-bristled brush like the Renapur horsehair brush from Amazon and start scrubbing. Just make sure that you don’t brush too hard during this process, as you don’t want to damage the wood while you’re at it.

'Be careful not to saturate the wood as this can worsen the issue if it can’t dry properly. After the solution is applied, scrub the surface with the brush and be mindful that scrubbing too hard can remove the finish or paint on the wood,' says Jimmy.

'Use a clean, damp cloth to wipe away the residue and avoid rinsing the area. Be careful not to let the spores contact non-mouldy surfaces if they are wet as new mould can grow. Allow the wood to dry and if you spot any more mould – repeat the process.'

4. Clean tougher stains with vinegar

If your untreated wood still has some lingering mould stains, there is another step you can add to your process. This involves cleaning with white vinegar.

Nicki explains, ‘I would highly recommend using white vinegar for this as once applied, it is an effective way of killing the fungus, which is the source of the mould.’

'Mix a solution of one part vinegar and water in a spray bottle as this can kill the spores,' advises Jimmy. 'Spray on the affected areas and leave for an hour. After this, wipe away the vinegar residue using a damp cloth which should remove the mould. Then buff the surfaces with a soft cloth.'

And if your mould problem is particularly bad you may well need to opt for a biocidal cleaner like Roxil Wood & Patio Cleaner, which you can pick up at Amazon.

'Begin by brushing away loose material, then apply the cleaner. For optimal results, let it sit for at least one hour, or ideally up to 24 hours, before rinsing. A clean finish can be achieved by using a stiff brush in combination with a garden hose. Try not to use a power washer, as the pressure can erode wooden surfaces,' explains Dr Jonathan Kirby, Mould Expert at Roxil.

5. Finally, protect the wood

When you get rid of mould, you should always try your utmost to stop mould coming back. Of course, this can seem impossible if you have a particularly humid house or you don’t protect your garden furniture, but it’s very easily done.

All you need to do is cover your clean and mould-free wood with a varnish or wood protector. Something like this Everbuild Wood Preserver from Amazon should do the trick.

This is an essential step if you’re cleaning mould off garden furniture, as Steve explains. ‘A mould-resistant paint or varnish can be used to prevent the growth of mould spores. This is particularly important for outdoor furniture that's kept in damp conditions.’

What to avoid when cleaning mould off wood

We asked Gary Jarman, building and materials expert at Building Shop for the main things to avoid:

• 'Don't use any type of bleach when cleaning mould off wood. Although some may suggest to use it, I highly advise against it as bleach is hugely ineffective at killing mould on many non-porous materials such as wood in the long run. It's also corrosive to wood, and contains a lot of water which can stimulate the regrowth of mould. Avoid it.
• Never use a pressure washer on any kind of wood furniture, as this can damage the surface.
• Don't skip drying out the wood completely - Moisture encourages mould to grow, so skipping this step can actually increase mould instead of prevent it, even if the results aren't noticeable straight away.
• Don't use any abrasive materials or especially harsh chemicals on painted or finished wood, unless you're willing to repaint or restain it.
• Always call in a professional if mould growth is particularly extensive - Mould can be damaging to both health and furnishings, so it's not worth risking it if there's a particularly large amount of mould.'

How do you get black mould off wood?

'Black mould can have a greenish colour to it, however, mostly it tends to be dark and black,' explains Jimmy Englezos, Senior Brand Manager from Ronseal.

'It also has a fuzzy or furry texture with circular spores. It can also look slimy if it has developed on damp wood or a wet surface. Like mould on wood, distilled white vinegar is an effective black mould killer when used at full strength.'

Firstly, you need to use a vacuum cleaner to suck up any loose mould spores. When you’ve done that, you can use a soft-bristled scrubbing brush and some warm soapy water to gently wipe away the mould.

If the wood is untreated, you can then spritz it with white vinegar to get any lingering black mould stains off the wood. If it’s untreated wood, you should avoid white vinegar and opt for a mixture of diluted bleach and water instead.

What kills mould on wood instantly?

Although warm, soapy water is a great way to clean mould off wood, it’s generally regarded that white vinegar is the best option. Not only will it clean the mould, but it will also kill the mould at the same time.

Just remember that you shouldn’t use white vinegar on untreated wood.

Can wood with mould be saved?

'In the majority of cases, yes, however if the mould has been there for a long time, covers a lot of the wood, or is particularly deep set into the wood, then it might not be able to,' explains Gary Jarman, building and materials expert at Building Shop.

In order to prevent it ever getting to this stage, Gary advises the following:

• 'Keep an eye out for mould on wood - if you notice a musty smell, discoloration or rotting, check the wood for mould. The earlier you detect it and the quicker you act on it, the bet. If you find mould in another part of your home, always check wooden furnishings as they will be susceptible.
• Remove any mould as soon as it's noticed - This will stop it from setting too deep into the mould, which can make it unable to be saved.
• Treat it effectively, and fully - Don't skip any steps and don't skip out on treating any part of the mouldy surface. Mould won't go away on it's own so it needs to be fully treated to be removed.
• Regularly clean outdoor wood.
• Address the root causes of mould growing on wood inside the home - this could be due to damp, cracks in windows and doors, high humidity levels, condensation, poor ventilation, excessively cold indoor temperatures.'

However, once you've cleaned it, you'll need to keep on top of the issue and the best way to do this is to make regular checks.

'Regularly inspect wooden structures for signs of mould, especially in damp or humid areas or after periods of heavy rain,' advises Luke Dejahang, Director and Gardening Expert at Crown Pavilions.

'For outdoor structures such as sheds and gazebos, it is important to check a couple of times a year, after periods of heavy rainfall in winter to assess damage, and then again at the end of summer to prepare for winter.'

We all know, on some level, that the key to any successful room scheme is maximising space and natural light – but, when it comes to sussing out how to arrange furniture in a bedroom, there are plenty more things to consider. particularly if you want a good night's sleep.

That's right: while we understand you may worry what your bed's position says about you, a dash of pseudoscience is absolutely not worth sacrificing any of those bedroom ideas that promote rest and relaxation.

Why? Because, according to Mental Health UK, it’s recommended that adults up to the age of 64 need 7-9 hours of sleep per night. Their latest research, however, has shown that almost 1 in 5 people in the UK aren’t getting enough shut eye.

How to arrange furniture in a bedroom

Now, the reasons for our nation's collective sleeplessness are multitude: still, there's no denying that a cool, comfortable and uncluttered bedroom layout can help to reduce stress – which, in turn, may help you get your sleep schedule back on track. 

'There are no hard and fast rules when arranging your bedroom furniture, but it is all about creating a flow and harmony within your space,' says Helen Ashmore, head of design at Laura Ashley. 

With that in mind, then, here's how to arrange furniture in a bedroom for a truly dreamy night's sleep...

1. Measure the space

Before choosing furniture, and certainly before working out how to arrange furniture in a bedroom, you need to know exactly how big the room is, as this will impact whether you need to look into some small bedroom ideas or not  

It is also important to note any alcoves or awkward corners (as these may be great for storage solutions), and it's useful to know the size of the doorway and the door opening too, as this can affect furniture placement.

Take some time, too, to work out which way the room faces (north, south, east or west). Then draw it out to scale on a piece of paper, so that you can plot where you'd like furniture and lighting to go and the maximum size it should be.

2. Work out where the largest items will go first

Once you've plotted the room out on paper, you can work out where you want the bed and wardrobes to go and the sizes that will suit.

Most interior designers agree that the bed in most master bedroom ideas should be placed against a wall rather than under a window – and Feng Shui principles suggest it's best if the head of your bed faces south and your feet aren't pointed towards the door. 

Instead of worrying about what your bed position says about you, though, therapist Dr Kalanit Ben-Ari suggests that you focus on prioritising comfort. 

'Some individuals may feel more relaxed when their bed is against a particular wall or facing a specific direction,' she says. 'Experimenting with different arrangements may help individuals find a configuration that feels most comfortable to them.'

Whatever you decide, try this tip: place newspaper on the floor to mark out where the bed, wardrobe and chest of drawers will go, as this should give you an idea of how the room will flow (or not), allowing you to adjust the sizes or spacing required.

3. Check there is space for doors to open

If you're opting for a bed with storage drawers underneath, check there is enough room to open them once the bedside cabinets are in place. 

Also make sure that you will be able to open wardrobe doors, once other items like the bed or bedside cabinets are in place. 

If you there isn't enough space to open doors or drawers, consider wall-hung bedside shelves or a ledge behind the bed instead. Wall lamps are another way to reduce the amount of surface space needed.

With fitted wardrobe ideas there is usually the option of sliding doors or curtains, and these are a good way to maximise space.

4. Work out what type of storage you need

There's no point having tons of drawer space if most of your clothes need to be hung from rails. So look at what you wear and how it is best stored before investing in any bedroom storage ideas. 

'Storage is essential in every home, therefore it’s important to utilise every inch that’s available, especially in the bedroom,' says Jonathan Clark, Creative Director for Shelved. 

'By keeping bedroom storage units to one wall only, you are freeing up additional wall space for a large headboard, artwork, and other bedroom furniture – floor-to-ceiling units will also allow you to save valuable floor space by using vertical space instead.'

Jonathan goes on to suggest that you 'opt for a tall modular design with a slim profile to ensure you’re making the most of all the available wall space'. 

'Open shelves will provide additional storage, allowing you to keep decorative items within reach whereas low-level cupboards are perfect for keeping your personal possessions neatly hidden away,' he says.

5. Opt for an ottoman

It's common practice for high-end designers and interior architects to count their client's shoes, bags and clothes before designing wardrobes. 

It's worth, then, doing an audit of your own stuff before choosing and planning how to arrange furniture in a bedroom. And don't forget about storing bed linen, winter duvets and throws, too!

If you'd rather not have these in the wardrobe, a blanket box or ottoman at the end of the bed can double up as a seat and storage: it will help to keep things feeling decluttered and calm.

'Bedrooms should be a tranquil haven where we feel relaxed and able to clear our minds for a deep sleep,' says Adam Black, co-founder at Button & Sprung. 

'We know that mess and clutter affect our ability to switch off – a busy bedroom equals a busy mind. Banish the chaos further by choosing an ottoman or divan-style bed for extra storage without taking up extra space, and turn your bedroom into a calming oasis where you feel truly at ease.'

6. Consider fitted wardrobes

As lovely as freestanding wardrobes look, if you're short on space, fitted wardrobe ideas will offer way more storage. And guess what? Shaker style fitted cupboards aren't just for the kitchen – they're a popular choice in the bedroom, too.

'Shaker design style started back in the 18th  century. One of its core principles was that function should come before everything else – with clean lines and simplicity at its heart,' explains Megan Baker, design expert, My Fitted Wardrobe.

'With its simple, repetitive, recessed panel  design, shaker style fitted wardrobes look stylish and sophisticated – providing an understated backdrop to build a design scheme around.  

'It is the minimalistic look which has stood the test of time and why shaker influences are still one of the most popular design looks throughout the home.' 

7. Look at where the sockets are

When it comes to cosy bedroom ideas, we all know and love the hygge trend of shunning the Big Light in favour of using lamps to create pools of warm light around the room. 

Still, nobody wants extension leads trailing behind the bed, so be sure to pay attention to where your electrical sockets are located and decide whether you need to have any extra fitted in near the bed or dressing table. 

For a scheme to work, you need to be able to plug in bedside lamps easily or dry your hair in a comfortable spot (if you're brainstorming guest bedroom ideas, this is especially important if you want to ensure guests a comfortable stay). 

It's not an expensive job to have extra sockets installed by an electrician. However, it is much better to have this done – or wall lamps installed – before you decorate.

Top tip: if you're opting for wall lamps, have them run on a separate circuit to your overhead light, so you can switch them on or off separately.

8. Tuck a dressing table into an alcove

A popular place for a dressing table is within a bay window. This not only makes use of an awkwardly shaped space, it provides plenty of natural light when putting on make up.

If your bedroom doesn't have a bay window, look at whether there is an alcove you can use. In a small space, instead of a bulky piece of furniture, consider fitting a shelf  where you can place perfumes or beauty paraphernalia, with a mirror on the wall and stool underneath. 

Again, make sure the plug socket is nearby, so you can plug in a hairdryer.

9. Know that small doesn’t mean cramped

We know, we know: when it comes to figuring out how to arrange furniture in a bedroom, the temptation with a small room is to make everything in it small as well. But this shouldn't be the case.

'Beds tend to become a particular compromise but the fact is that it doesn’t matter how supportive your mattress is,' says Adam from Button & Sprung. 

'If it’s too small for your needs, you’re not going to sleep well over the long term. Buy the biggest bed and mattress that the room can comfortably accommodate – it's so important to have enough space for you, and perhaps partners and family, to spread out.'

He adds that you should also make a point of buying the best mattress you can afford, as 'there is no greater luxury than quality sleep'. 

'While we know there is no miracle cure for a good night’s sleep, we do know that the single most important factor is a supportive mattress,' continues Adam. 

'A mattress, like a piece of clothing, should fit your unique shape and weight. It should contour to the curves of your body and align your spine in a neutral position.' 

He advises you should opt for 'a naturally filled, pocket sprung mattress and you will not only have the cleanest night’s sleep, thanks to the total lack of harmful chemicals versus foam mattresses, but it will be fully recyclable at the end of its life'.

10. Save space with wall or door panel mirrors

An easily overlooked item in a bedroom scheme is a full standing mirror. Yet if you want to be able to check your outfit before you head out, this is an integral part of working out how to arrange furniture in a bedroom.

A freestanding mirror that can be moved around is ideal, however, if this isn't practical, make use of available wall or wardrobe door space.

'Adding mirrors to your design will break up the solid panels, creating a more contemporary final look,' says Megan from My Fitted Wardrobe. 'Using mirrors is a great way of adding more depth to a finished scheme and they provide a practical add on.'

11. Layer your lighting

It is normal practice to layer lighting in a living room, with overhead, task and accent lamps. The same applies to bedroom lighting ideas too. It's essential to have a bright overhead light for getting ready in the evenings. As well as soft mood lighting or lamps for reading. 

'Bedrooms are practical as well as relaxation spaces, so plan your lighting accordingly,' advises Peter Bowles, MD, Original BTC. 'Consider different types of light fitting, not just the light they provide. Wall-mounted lights are great space-savers in small or low ceilinged rooms and create a boutique hotel look. 

'Remember to illuminate areas such as dressing tables, wardrobes and reading nooks, where more focussed task light is required.'

1. Choose the right selling platform

Selling furniture second-hand is now easier than ever, which is a win-win situation for buyers and sellers. However, it’s important to understand the intricacies of each selling platform and what they can offer you as a seller:

• eBay: As one of the most popular buying and selling platforms worldwide, it’s incredibly safe and easy to buy and sell on eBay. In fact, it’s one of our favourite places to buy refurbished air fryers. If you’re a private seller and haven’t gone over your monthly allowance, selling furniture second-hand on eBay is free. You will have to pay a percentage to the platform when your item sells, though. 
• Etsy: Famous for its independent sellers and small businesses, Etsy is a common platform for buying and selling second-hand goods. However, this platform seems to favour buyers rather than sellers. To sell anything on Etsy, you’ll be charged a 16p listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee, and then a 4% + 20p payment processing fee. 
• Facebook Marketplace: Facebook is much more than just a social media platform. Facebook Marketplace is a handy and totally free way to sell furniture second-hand to those in your local area. You won’t have to pay any fees, and you can have your buyer pick it up from your home. • Gumtree: Dubbed as the number-one classified ads site in the UK, Gumtree is another platform for selling second-hand furniture. While it’s usually completely free to list your items on Gumtree, the platform does note on its website that certain services do incur a fee. • Vinted: A popular choice for those buying and selling pre-loved clothes, what many don’t realise is that you can also sell second-hand furniture on Vinted. As it’s primarily known for selling clothes, shoes, and accessories, it may take you a little longer to sell - but it is completely free to use, which is a bonus. 
• Shpock: This buying and selling platform relies on finding potential buyers close to you, which is a great option for those who don’t have the ability to post a large chest of drawers. There are zero fees involved, and there’s even added buyer and seller protection to ensure you’re selling to the right person.
• Preloved: Like many of the other online selling platforms, Preloved offers a free way to sell your second-hand furniture. However, you can also become a member for extra perks. 2. Prepare the furniture for selling

Everyone knows that every piece of second-hand furniture comes with a story. No matter whether it’s had one or multiple owners, buyers know that it may be a little rougher around the edges - especially compared to brand-new furniture that comes straight from the shop. 

While sellers can give or take chipped paint or a wobbly table (as long as you were honest about these features in the first place), they won’t appreciate buying second-hand furniture that’s covered in dust, mould or completely missing a door. So, it’s important to prepare your second-hand furniture for selling before you really get started. Think about what you look for when buying secondhand furniture.

Margaret Larson from Sustainable Furniture explains, ‘When preparing furniture for sale, it is important to perform a deep clean, this will ensure furniture pieces are looking their best to help achieve a quick and high-profit sale. Start by emptying any drawers and cupboards or check under cushions for miscellaneous items.'

‘Furniture made from wood, glass or metal can be cleaned using a damp cloth to remove dust, and if there are any lingering tough stains, try spot cleaning with a sponge, warm water and mild dish soap. Then, to finish, buff and polish using suitable products to restore the furniture's appearance.'

‘For upholstered furniture pieces, start by lightly hoovering the surface to remove debris, then spot clean any tough stains and plump cushions for the perfect finishing touch.’

3. Make sure your photos are stellar

You wouldn’t buy clothes or a car online without looking at photos first, so you can’t expect potential buyers to purchase your second-hand furniture without seeing what it looks like. The best way to give them what they want is to take stellar photos that really show off the item.

Hannah Rouch, second-hand expert at Gumtree, explains, ‘Pictures may tell a thousand words - but bad photography won't sell your furniture. Take photos of the item against a plain background so it's clear what you are selling, and whatever you do, only post images that are in focus!' 

'Buyers will want to see as much of the item as possible - warts and all. So, take photos of the object from all angles and clearly show any defects that are present. When shooting, make the most of natural daylight to ensure your images are bright and sharp.’

It may also be a good idea to take photos of the furniture in the room they’re designed to go in if you can do so without the pictures looking too cluttered. For example, photographing a sofa in a living room or snapping a chest of drawers next to a bed. This will allow buyers to gauge the general size and visualise it in their own home. 

It goes without saying that you should also never use photo editing tools when taking photos of your second-hand furniture, as you don’t want to mislead a potential buyer. 

5. Write a spot-on (and honest) description

No online advert would be complete without a description. And while you might think that short and simple descriptions filled with important info will help sell your furniture, Hannah suggests otherwise.

‘A one-line description might make the buyer think you have something to hide,’ she says. ‘Put yourself in the buyer's shoes and think about what they need to know to ultimately make the purchase. Practical information such as measurements, the material it is made from, and the item's history are the basics.’

‘But for a quick sale, paint a picture of how potential buyers could use the item. Describe what makes the object stand out from the competition - are the drawers extra deep and great for storing bulky jumpers? Is the desk extra wide and perfect for working at home? Create a story so the buyer can imagine the furniture in their own home. Once you have written your description, run it through a spell checker, as listings with incorrect spellings are far less likely to be found online.’

Within this description, you should also explain about the delivery or collection method. If you’re willing to send the furniture to your buyer, confirm who will be covering the postage fees. If they live locally, you could also explain that you’re willing to deliver the item for an extra fee if required. Alternatively, confirm that you will be selling for collection only. 

The main aim is to pre-emptively answer any questions a buyer may have, as this will not only make you look confident and trustworthy but will usually result in a quick sale too. 

5. Settle on a price

If you want to sell furniture second-hand rather than recycle or donate it, you obviously want to get money out of it - and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. Everyone is within their right to ask for money in exchange for goods, but you need to settle on a price that works for both the buyer and the seller. 

It can be easy for sellers to become emotionally attached to their items and ask for more than the furniture is worth. However, a good rule to follow is that second-hand furniture in good condition can be sold at around 70-80% of the original sale price.

Ava Wilson, Chief Editor at Unclutterer, also adds, ‘Research similar items to price yours competitively. Be realistic about the condition and age of your furniture.’

One of the easiest places to do this research is on your chosen selling platform. If you find something similar that’s been for sale for months, it’s highly likely that it’s been priced too high, and therefore you should lower your expectations accordingly. 

6. Engage with potential buyers

So, what do you do when you have an interested buyer? Many people will try to haggle the price of pre-loved and second-hand furniture, and it’s down to you how you want to play that game. Of course, if you want to drive a hard bargain and are willing to wait a little longer to get what you want, stick to your advertised price. 

But if you want to get rid of heavy second-hand furniture in a hurry to make space for new pieces, it’s probably worth being lenient and finding a comfortable middle ground between you and the buyer. 

Whatever you choose, it’s important to respond quickly to enquiries and keep things short and professional.

7. Seal the deal

When you’ve found a willing buyer and are confident with the price, you can then seal the deal and arrange for the exchange of money and goods. How this is done will depend on whether you’re posting, delivering, or exchanging on collection, and how you choose to accept the money.

As online scams are rising, the safest way to exchange money is in person and with cash. If you feel like you’re being pressured into accepting money online, it’s best to avoid it - especially if you’re planning on sending the furniture to your buyer.

‘One of the most exciting parts of the festivities is decorating the home with family,’ says Sam Deeble, furniture expert at Woods Furniture. ‘However, making sufficient room for the tree can prove challenging, but luckily there are ways to reposition furniture to ensure there’s enough room for decorations and guests.’

Sam Green, interior design expert at Pole Design, continues, ‘Your living room needs to remain a living space, so you have to find ways to ensure that everyone can move around freely. Clustering furniture and leaving entryways open is one of the easiest ways to allow movement and encourage conversation.’

1. Create inviting seating opportunities

One of the most important things in a living room is to have sufficient seating for everyone. But the chairs, sofas and ottomans (and everything else you’ll be using as seating solutions for the festive season) should also be inviting and comfortable to hang out in and engage in conversation.

‘Ensure there’s enough space for guests to sit comfortably and move freely,’ says Kelly Collins, interior designer and head of creative at Swyft. ‘For instance, if you have a three-seater sofa and an ottoman, reposition the ottoman to serve as additional seating. Think carefully about seating arrangements and avoid placing the backs of chairs or armchairs directly against each other. Instead, angle them slightly to make the space feel more inviting.’

Sam at Pole Design adds, ‘If you’re rearranging your furniture to accommodate a tree, consider working in zones, and dividing the room into designated spaces – dining, socialising, playing, gift opening. If you don’t have the space to do this, try to bring in a large coffee table or several side tables to serve every seat to make the room multifunctional.’

2. Move furniture to the side to make space for the tree

As a one-month measure, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with repositioning furniture temporarily to ensure there’s enough room for decorations and additional seating,’ Sam at Woods Furniture says.

Even if that means just moving certain pieces of furniture to the side or taking them temporarily out of the room if they’re not needed.

‘Sofas, chairs and tables can all be moved to the side of the room, closer to walls, helping avoid clutter. With furniture shifted to the sides of the living room, a corner can prove to be the perfect place to position a Christmas tree. By doing this, people are maximising the space available to them while still enjoying the visual appeal of a decorated tree.

“Smaller pieces of furniture, such as coffee tables, can be easily shifted to other rooms to make space. Again, this is only a temporary measure and people can quickly revert the living area to its normal state in the New Year,’ Sam says.

3. Find the perfect spot for your Christmas tree

If you're wondering where to put your Christmas tree, interior designer Cathy Dean has a genius answer that will help with your festive furniture arrangements.

The founder of Studio Dean says: 'We all have a "least used" spot in our living room that's ornamental rather than functional. It might be the armchair that looks pretty but we never sit in it, the spot with the sideboard and lamp on it – that's the spot for your tree! Move the ornamental piece out and place your new festive decorations there. It's likely to be the most that area has been used all year.'

The added advantage is that if your tree is in a little-used spot, it's not taking up valuable real estate in a busier part of your living room that you'd usually fill with seating.

'For me, Christmas is all about getting cosy with friends and family, and nothing says cosy like comfortable sofas nestled around a roaring fire,' says interior designer Jojo Bradley. 'Not only is it a stunning focal point, adorned with festive mantel decor ideas, it invites warmth and conversation.'

'The key is in the arrangement,' Jojo adds. 'Face your sofas and chairs towards each other and make sure there are clear pathways for replenishing those drinks and nibbles. And don't forget coffee tables and side tables so that you can set your cocktails and canapes safely aside.'

5. Repurpose seating from other rooms

While everyone naturally wants the best spot on the sofa, if you’re having a bigger gathering, bringing in additional seating options can be necessary to give people somewhere to perch.

'Make use of dining furniture – benches are great for providing a comfortable but flexible seating area,' suggests Lou Petersen, head of design innovation at DFS. 'Or introduce a couple of colourful footstools to create more seating options and build the welcoming atmosphere of the space.'

'We love cube footstool to work as occasional seating,' agrees Cathy Dean from Studio Dean. 'Throughout the year they can happily hide in plain sight under the coffee table or to the side of the room as an additional occasional table. But for Christmas, they come into their own as essential board game-playing spots!'

6. Don't forget cosy lighting

There's nothing worse than getting the furniture arrangement just right, but everyone hanging out in the kitchen anyway because it feels more welcoming!

'Think about your lighting,' says Jojo Bradley. 'Cosy means no harsh lights, so turn on table lamps and position them in the corners of a room so that they warm the mood and diffuse the light.'

Bonus points if you put a reading lamp behind an armchair, making the perfect reading corner idea for someone to sit in a quiet and cosy corner if they don't want to be in the centre of the festive fray.

7. Mix up a modular sofa

If you already have a modular sofa, then don't be afraid to reconfigure it throughout the festivities. The multi-piece design means it can be broken up to suit different activities.

'A modular sofa can be a great option to keep your living room even more flexible,' agrees Lou at DFS. 'You can rearrange it for any occasion – whether that means creating conversational seating areas for guests, a comfy reading nook, or a sofa for the whole family to stretch out and have a Christmas movie night!'

You don't want family and friends to feel chilly and uncomfortable, so be inspired by some cosy living room ideas and add a few little luxuries that will make them feel at home.

'Textures are key to creating a cosy Christmas atmosphere, so invest in some gorgeous wool throws or sheepskin rugs as finishing touches,' recommends Jojo Bradley. 'Mix your textures and consider adding additional cushions to your sofa for extra lounging and comfort. For this, you can't beat an oversized velvet fabric for absolute luxury.'

When it comes to where to buy a bed, it's not all about finding a style you love that's within your budget.

You may also want to factor in whether you can view your preferred bed frame in person before you buy, whether your chosen bed will be delivered to your bedroom or left at your doorstep, and whether there's the option to have someone with savvier DIY skills assemble it for you.

There are several types of beds you can choose from; the main options being a divan bed base, an ottoman bed, or a simple bed frame or bedstead. You can find out more about each in our dedicated guides, but ultimately, no one type of bed is fundamentally 'best' or better than the other; they each offer their own unique attributes.

Which company is best for beds?

I've listed my recommended bed retailers above, including the average price range of beds available at each brand. Ultimately, the right choice of bed for you comes down to your budget and the style of bed you prefer.

You might prefer to buy from a retailer that has showrooms where you can view the bed before you invest, or you may be happy shopping online, but whichever option you choose, I would say that the best companies to buy from are those that offer a range of delivery options.

Beds are heavy, so look for retailers that offer delivery to your room of choice, and, if you know your DIY skills aren't up to scratch or that you'll struggle to build a bed on your own, it can also be well worth shopping with a brand that offers an assembly service for large furniture.

Does a bed base affect how your mattress feels?

Yes, your bed base can affect how your mattress feels. For instance, a solid divan bed base or slatted bed base will make your mattress feel firmer than a sprung divan bed base.

That means that bed comfort isn't all down to choosing between a memory foam, pocket spring, open coil, or hybrid mattress, the bed base underneath is part of the puzzle too.

What is the average cost of a bed?

On average, I would say you should budget between £500 and £1500 for a bed of decent quality.

A bed frame is usually the cheaper option, whilst a divan or ottoman bed generally costs more.

You can find very basic bed frames for around £150 for a double bed, or spend upwards of £5,000 on a bed made from higher quality materials and which offers more design options.

Many of us have a love/hate relationship with IKEA furniture - there’s no doubt that the price is unbeatable, and the quality you get in return is pretty good. However, building said IKEA furniture can often be a long and lengthy task; putting flat-pack together isn’t something that *anyone* really looks forward to.

Perhaps one of the main pain points with assembling IKEA furniture is having to screw everything in with the super awkward Allen key that often comes with your new flatpack purchase. Many of us will waste hours, if not days, turning that Allen key incessantly (and slowly) until the piece is built.

But according to one viral TikTok video, there is another way! DIY and woodworking expert Nick Starrett shared that one very simple IKEA hack can make the whole experience of building your furniture *much* easier.

TikTok hack to make building IKEA furniture easier

The TikTok video, which has received over 31,000 likes, shares that the key to this trick lies in the Allen key or Allen wrench that was likely included with your IKEA purchase. Nick says that, if you got one with your purchase, or you have one already at home that you use for building any flatpack furniture (such as your classic IKEA dupes), you can actually cut this to make for a much easier DIY project.

Nick suggests that for this hack, you can cut off the rounded top of the Allen key, so that it is now a straight ‘wrench’ rather than a rounded one.

Of course, this isn’t something you’ll likely be able to achieve with regular household scissors, so experts generally advise using bolt cutters (safely of course!) for this job.

Once this is done, Nick advises grabbing an electric drill, and simply placing what remains of the Allen key into the drill. 

Demonstrating the results, he then shows how easy it is to use the Allen key now that it is attached to your electric drill - and that rather than spending hours turning the key manually, you can simply install your IKEA screws in just minutes. 

And it’s as easy as that! We can’t believe we didn’t know this sooner…

However, a couple of people within the comment section noted that you may want to keep a regular (e.g. not cut) Allen key spare too, when assembling your IKEA furniture.

This is because you may have to deal with some more awkward sections of assembly, where your electric drill may not fit – in which case, you'll need the much smaller, normal Allen key to help you do the job.

You should also exercise some serious caution when cutting an Allen key, and make sure you have the proper tools for the job. If you're in any doubt or are a novice DIYer, head to a DIY/hardware store for their advice on how to cut your Allen wrench or you can pick up an Allen Key bit set on Amazon that has been specifically designed to use with a drill.

That aside, we'd say this is a pretty brilliant DIY hack for self-assembling furniture, and should the often tiresome and time-consuming process much quicker, and easier.
