I’ve asked three experts and they’ve shared 5 of their top tips to make sure that’s exactly how your outdoor space feels.

‘The principles are the same for designing any space be it inside or outside and the key is to think about how you actually want to use the space before arranging anything,’ says John O’Leary, design director at Swyft. ‘Outdoor areas are now extensions of the home, so comfort, flow and flexibility matter just as much outside as they do indoors.’

1. Zone the space

The best way to approach your outdoor furniture set-up is similar to how you’d arrange your living room furniture. And zoning the space well is always helpful and makes for a good idea.

‘Think about creating zones, somewhere to dine, relax or entertain, while making sure there’s enough space to move around comfortably,’ John at Swyft advises.

The BBQ is lit, the food is prepped, and your garden is looking lush – guests are arriving imminently, but you look down at the arm of your chair and notice bird poo... oh, and on the sofa cover too.

At this time of year, birds are busy; they've got their young in nests, and they're backwards and forwards feeding them, so if they've nested near your house and garden, you are in the fly-poop zone, and your patio is the first place you'll notice it.

We have spoken to our experts, and they have seven genius ways to prevent this from happening that are also humane.

1. Optical bird gel

A new way to keep birds from poohing across your garden is optical bird gel – Amazon have a version called SpectrumV Holographic bird gel, £35.89.

'It's been developed to humanely deter wild birds from areas and is sometimes called ‘Fire Gel’ or ‘Optical Gel’. Usually sold in small, unobtrusive dishes or in tubes to be applied using a caulking gun. This gel works by appearing as little balls of fire due to birds seeing in the ultraviolet spectrum,' explains Lucie Bradley, gardening and greenhouse expert at Easy Garden Irrigation.

The good bit is that some of these gels have essential oils in them, 'Essential oils such as peppermint or citronella are a deterrent too – this combination of shimmering appearance and scent makes these gels highly effective,' adds Lucie.

2. Reflective items

Reflective surfaces are a big no for birds, especially if they flutter or swing.

Lee Trethewey, outdoor furniture expert at Sustainable Furniture, says, 'Reflective items, like old CDs or metallic ribbon, close to outdoor furniture will definitely help. The reflective surface naturally deters birds because of the unpredictable flashes of light they can emit, and the sudden changes in light intensity or direction can confuse and startle birds, so they will not settle down in your garden.'

B&Q's 350ft bird repellent scare tape, £7.99, reflects the light and makes a sound when it's windy. Cut into strips and tie them near your furniture – ideally, tree branches and around the top of your parasol.

3. Decoys

Decoys are a good option that has a high deterrent rate. Lee agrees, 'Realistic predator decoys can also be used to keep birds away from outdoor furniture. Use plastic owls or swooping bird-shaped kites, but ensure that these are moved around every few days so the birds do not begin to realise that they are fake.

4. Consider your furniture layout

Before you start your summer entertaining season, it pays to look at your garden furniture layout in relation to where birds might like to be.

'Many of us like to position bird feeders or bird baths in our garden to attract wild birds to visit, but at the same time you don’t want your garden furniture getting splattered by bird poo,' says Lucie.

To combat this, Lucie recommends moving your feeders and bird baths at least ten meters away from your patio or seating areas.

Another top tip is to check out the branches they like to perch on: 'Trim back overhead branches or shrubs that are close to outdoor furniture,' suggests Lee.

There are some scents that deter birds, and these can be used effectively to keep them away from your patio furniture.

Lucie explains, 'Although we are usually thinking about which plants we can grow to help wild birds and make our gardens inviting for them, you can also do localised planting around patios or seating with plants which birds dislike to deter them from going close to those areas.'

Look at plants such as lavender, marigolds and mint, says Lucie, 'They can be grown in pots and placed near seating areas, and birds will be discouraged by the strong aromas.'

Lavender is particularly good because it deters birds but attracts the bees and butterflies. We like the Lavandula angustifolia Hidcote Blue variety, currently £6.99 for 12, Gardening Express.

6. Auditory deterrents

'Birds usually prefer a quiet resting spot, and adding unexpected noise can make your garden less welcoming,' explains Lee.

There are two types of noise deterrent, 'Wind chimes can discourage smaller birds, with metal chimes being the most effective. There are also ultrasonic or motion-activated devices, but be mindful that pets or neighbours may be able to hear the noises from these,' Lee adds.

Clean food scraps immediately after eating outside, and wipe down furniture to remove crumbs or spillages,' advises Lee. 'You should also clean away any existing bird poo, as this will stop other birds from seeing your furniture as a safe landing area.'

‘When choosing a sun lounger, it’s important to think beyond appearance and focus on durability, comfort, and how the piece will perform over time,’ Matt at Garden Trading advises.

These are some of the things to look out for when shopping for sun loungers that will help you make sure that all the crucial criteria are ticked off.

Material

Just like with any garden furniture, it’s important to make sure that the material of your sun lounger is durable and of good quality. Some of the recommended materials to look out for are either teak or acacia wood - teak is more durable but acacia wood is more common and more affordable - synthetic rattan also known as poly rattan and powder-coated aluminium or steel.

‘Because sun loungers are designed to support weight for extended periods, opting for high-quality, hard-wearing materials is essential. I would typically recommend either a solid wood design, or a premium poly-rattan model with a sturdy aluminium frame. Both options offer excellent longevity, withstand regular use, and cope with changing weather conditions well, helping to maintain their appearance for years with the right care,’ Matt at Garden Trading explains.

‘A good sun lounger will offer a stable base on which to lie and offer comfort through supportive and showerproof cushions,’ says Danielle Le Vaillant, head of photography and film at Cox & Cox.

‘Great item, solid construction, simple in the most part to set up, took about 40 mins on my own, including unboxing. Cushions and chairs are well-made, & easy to remove if you want to store them away. Very happy with my purchase!’ said one.

But even though the brand is known for its super budget-friendly credentials, not all of IKEA's garden furniture pieces are as affordable as they seem. In fact, I found 4 IKEA outdoor furniture alternatives for less.

To be able to recommend the best garden furniture on the market, I regularly check various brands’ and retailers’ collections so that you don’t have to – and it’s on one of these recent ‘sweeps’ that I discovered a few more affordable alternatives for some of IKEA’s outdoor bestsellers.

It all started with the 17 Stories Dalvey Wide Rectangle Steel Loveseat, available at Wayfair for £283.99 for a two-seater outdoor sofa. As soon as I spotted it, I knew it was the perfect budget alternative for IKEA’s super popular HAVSTEN sofa, which retails for £480. Ideal Home’s Editor in Chief, Heather Young, owns a couple of the IKEA HAVSTEN three-seaters and when I showed her the Wayfair sofa even she said it looks pretty much identical. It's even more alike than the Habitat budget lookalike I found last year.

We’re all used to IKEA being the more affordable option whenever compared to, well, any other brand. But that’s actually not always the case. While IKEA is still one of the best places to buy garden furniture as it combines low to reasonable prices with stylish Scandi design, it’s always worth shopping around to bag an absolute bargain like this budget alternative from Wayfair, selling for £283.99 for a two-seater. Meanwhile, IKEA’s lookalike HAVSTEN outdoor sofa, which is one of the Swedish retailer’s bestsellers, retails for £480 for the same size.

Ideal Home’s Editor in Chief, Heather Young owns two IKEA HAVSTEN three-seaters and even she pointed out that they weren’t exactly cheap as far as the best outdoor sofas go. And she also marvelled at how similar the Wayfair alternative looked to her IKEA sofas – or in her words, ‘pretty much the same’. Even more so than the Habitat alternative that I found last year, the Habitat Tallak garden sofa set.

The Dalvey outdoor sofa from Wayfair also comes in a three-seater version for £409.99 if you’re after more space for lounging, as well as the best garden chair for £139.99 if you don’t have space for anything larger. While the IKEA HAVSTEN sofa only comes in the one off-white colourway - which the brand calls ‘beige’ (I suppose the armrest covers are indeed beige but I wouldn’t say the same for the cushions and steel frame) - the Wayfair sofa is available in two colours, the pictured white and grey. And while I’m usually not a big fan of grey garden furniture as it can come across as outdated, this grey looks more sleek and sophisticated than most.

Garden furniture experts are warning homeowners to always remove their garden furniture covers in sunny weather - even if you're not using your garden furniture.

If you’ve invested in the best garden furniture, you’ll likely have snapped up a cover, too, to ensure your seating is protected against the elements. This is especially true in winter when the weather is even less predictable, and if you have a small shed or lack storage space.

However, in sunny weather, experts want you to remove the covers even if you’re not using your furniture. This is because covers can trap heat and moisture, and even warp, in sunny weather, ultimately damaging your furniture. Here’s everything you need to know.

The warning

I imagine your garden furniture covers are not something you pay much attention to, especially if you have a weatherproof cover, such as Argos Home’s Deluxe Patio Cover (£47). However, some covers, especially PVC ones, can have a negative effect on your furniture in sunny weather.

‘Garden furniture covers should be removed in sunny weather as they can trap heat and moisture underneath, turning them into a mini greenhouse. Whilst the modern covers won't melt under normal sunlight, cheaper plastics and PVC-based materials can degrade, warp and even stick to surfaces if the temperature is hot enough,’ explains Reilly Gray, Co-Founder of Suns Lifestyle.

‘This buildup in heat and humidity can damage your furniture, causing wood to dry and crack, metal to sweat and potentially corrode (especially if not made from high-quality, weather-resistant materials) and any upholstery to develop mould and mildew.’

Because of this, if the forecast is set to be sunny, remove your furniture covers. Although it has to be said, on the rare occasion the UK has gorgeous sunny weather, we often want to enjoy our garden seating areas anyway!

For the best protection, put your garden furniture in partial shade when it is really sunny, or you can use UV-resistant finishes such as Ronseal's Garden Clear Matt Furniture Protector, £20, on wood garden furniture.

When to use garden furniture covers

This doesn’t mean your garden furniture covers are redundant. In fact, they can be very useful when used correctly, especially during wet weather.

‘In practice, I always advise using covers more selectively. They are useful overnight, during heavy rain, or when the furniture isn’t being used for a period of time. On bright, dry days, it’s better to leave furniture uncovered so it can breathe properly,’ advises Mirela Bajic, Senior Garden designer at House Designer.

‘Cushions are the one exception. I always recommend storing those separately in a dry, ventilated space rather than leaving them outside under a cover. Even with a cover, they tend to hold moisture and can quickly develop that damp smell if they are not properly aired.

‘If you are using covers, it’s worth investing in breathable, well-fitted ones rather than fully sealed plastic styles. That small detail makes a big difference in preventing heat and moisture build-up.’

As we head into summer, the prospect of sunny days is more viable. So, if you’re not using your garden furniture on sunny days, remove the covers anyway and let it breathe.

My immediate thought, scrolling through the sale items, was ‘I can’t believe that an egg chair is so cheap!’. And at £75, down from £150, B&M’s Santorini Hanging Egg Chair is a bargain price. While I have spotted a similar Hanging Cream Egg Chair in Black for £99 at B&Q (reduced from £199.99), I haven’t found many as affordable as B&M’s.

And if like me, you can’t quite afford spending £1000s on garden furniture, I’ve found some budget-friendly Soho Home outdoor furniture lookalikes to indulge in instead.

For me, Soho Home’s outdoor range is some of the most aspirational and best garden furniture there is. If you’re not familiar with the brand, Soho Home is the homeware brand behind the Soho House clubs – and also the brand that furnishes every Soho House club around the globe. And much like the exclusive private members’ club franchise, Soho Home is known for being extremely stylish and pretty iconic – this goes for the brand’s outdoor furniture, too.

Earlier this week, QVC dropped a new collection of outdoor furniture inspired by the 1970s. Aptly named the QVC Studio 70 garden furniture range, referencing New York’s iconic Studio 54 nightclub popular in the 70s, I got to see the new pieces in person – and I’ve selected the top 9 pieces that I think are worth investing in.

It’s my job to look at as much outdoor furniture as possible so that you don’t have to - not to mention that I’m an extremely fussy and hard-to-impress furniture editor - which is why my editor asked me for a shortlist of the best outdoor coffee tables that she could add to her garden. How to choose an outdoor sofa

There are a few things you should consider when choosing outdoor furniture for your garden – and that goes for outdoor sofas, too.

1. Size

Just like with any piece of furniture, you have yo make sure that the outdoor sofa will not only fit in your outdoor space, but that it will also work. By that I mean that it won't overwhelm the space or look too small or out of proportion. So measure first, buy second.

2. Material

The choice of material is largely about quality – as certain materials are more weather-resistant than others. In terms of metals, aluminium is rust-proof which makes it the top choice but steel is also a good option to go for. As for wood, teak is the superior choice. But acacia and eucalyptus wood are also great.

But you should think about the material also in relation to the aesthetic you like and what kind of outdoor space you're looking to create. For something more bohemian, a rattan or faux-rattan sofa might work best. It should feel like you went there on purpose,’ says Martin Young, founder of British garden furniture company, Sitting Spiritually.

The modular set combines two benches, a snug corner seat and a compact coffee table, which you can move and style as you please. It also has plump, beige cushions, which add to the overall inviting vibe.

One of the biggest draws of modular furniture is its customisability. Not all gardens were created equal, and if you have a small garden or an irregularly shaped garden, a modular garden furniture set can help you tailor your furniture to suit the space you have.

While these chairs don’t lend themselves to socialisation like the best garden sofa sets, they are perfect for creating your own personal sanctuary in your garden. However, they can be a bit bulky. So, if you don’t have a large garden or are confined to a courtyard or balcony, it may not feel like you have the space for a garden egg chair.

This is where the B&M Hampshire Folding Chair comes into its own. As you may have guessed from its name, the Hampshire Folding Chair features a folding basket for easy storage. The seat simply pushes together, effectively removing the ‘egg’, making it easy to tuck away on a balcony or store in your shed.

As we welcome sunshine back into our lives with the arrival of spring, everyone’s attention is turning to their garden. Furnishing it in time for al fresco season is priority number one. And B&Q customers have been going wild over the newly dropped GoodHome Atar rattan-effect outdoor corner sofa set – and that’s because it also turns into a daybed!

Year after year, B&Q has some of the best garden furniture on offer – and at budget-friendly prices, which is why it’s a go-to for many, myself included. And while last year, customers were swooning over the swivel rattan-effect garden furniture sets, this year, it seems to be all about this innovative £800 corner sofa/daybed.

I have personally never come across a design quite like this – and I’ve seen it all when it comes to garden furniture ideas. Although Habitat's Malta day bed is the closest to this that I've seen. But I’m fully on board with the clever mechanism that allows the daybed part to be neatly folded away underneath the sofa seat when not in use, and which can be pulled out when you want to lounge and relax in comfort.

Even though it only just launched, the corner sofa set is already enjoying much popularity from customers with 50 units sold in the last two days (at the time of writing) and four 5-star reviews under its belt.

One reviewer wrote, ‘I am over the moon with it, such great quality and super comfy, really great value for money.’

The only thing that the reviewers warn about is the size of the product on arrival – apparently, it arrives part assembled and it’s very large. So much so that several customers weren’t able to fit it through the front door.

Another existing customer said, ‘Be careful with measurements as I was unable to get mine through the front door (products come part assembled). I’m not always the biggest fan of faux rattan, at least not the traditional look of it. As modular sofas are growing in popularity with each year, going from strength to strength in our homes - my own living room included - this living room trend is being translated into the garden space as outdoor modular sofas are also becoming more sought after.

‘There’s also a clear move towards modular and space-conscious designs,’ says John O’Leary, design director at Swyft. ‘Not every outdoor area is expansive, so furniture that can adapt, whether that’s stackable seating, compact lounge sets or pieces that work across balconies and gardens, is becoming essential.’

2. Invest in a curved outdoor sofa

Speaking of outdoor sofas, curved, organic-inspired shapes are also everywhere this season, mimicking the interior curved sofa trend. And retailers like John Lewis and King Living have reimagined their indoor sofas for the outdoors, namely the John Lewis Lozenge and King Living 1977.

‘We expect curves to lead the way in outdoor garden furniture,' says Rikke Blaeside, design and range manager at JYSK. 'This trend is all about bold curvaceous shapes, artistic forms, and statement pieces that double as functional design.'

3. Opt for natural finishes

It’s not just natural shapes that garden furniture trends are taking inspiration from, it’s also natural materials and finishes that are being championed in our gardens in 2026, whether that’s rattan or wood.

‘We are seeing a lot less grey faux wicker and rattan as people steer towards more natural looking shades that give a more country cottage feel,’ starts Danielle Le Vaillant, head of photography and film at Cox & Cox.

Lisa Jones, editorial design manager at Dunelm, continues, ‘Nature-led design continues to gain momentum. Consumers are increasingly looking to forge a stronger connection between their homes and the natural world, reflected in a preference for tactile, organic materials such as jute and rattan.’

The biggest home decor trend of 2026 is making your home personal to you. And the same goes for your garden. One of the most popular and expert-recommended ways to inject some personality into your outdoor space is by layering, mixing and matching your pieces and even accessories.

‘While coordinated garden sets and minimalist grey finishes remain a staple for many outdoor spaces, we’re seeing growing interest in looks that feel more relaxed and layered. Shoppers are increasingly styling their gardens in a way that feels personal, mixing furniture shapes, textures and tones rather than sticking to one uniform set,’ Rory at B&Q says.

Last year, I was personally obsessed with the elevated look of tiled garden coffee tables. So I’m very happy to see this trend being embraced on a wider level as more brands have released their takes on tiled outdoor coffee tables like the Rico design from Barker and Stonehouse, but also side tables like La Redoute's Dendi one, as well as dining tables.

This time of year is the prime time to invest in new garden furniture – it’s just before the al fresco season of outdoor hosting, dining, and lounging truly begins (as the weather doesn’t quite permit for it just yet), with the Easter break just ahead of us, many brands have sales on and the stock levels are still looking healthy. In the months leading up to spring, I spend a lot of time trying out new outdoor furniture that brands are introducing that year. Based on this - as well as research into materials, the brands themselves, customer reviews and taking the Ideal Home team’s experience into account, too - I make my judgements on what’s the best garden furniture available on the market.

And as one might expect, a large portion of the garden furniture ideas I test and come across are indeed outdoor lounge sets – because who doesn’t want a comfortable spot in the garden dedicated to lounging and relaxing (hopefully) in the sun?!

1. George Home

If you’re looking for maximum style on a minimum budget then George Home at ASDA is the place to go. The brand’s garden furniture is excellent considering the low price points, which includes its garden lounge sets.

The Tuscany set is a great budget alternative to IKEA’s HAVSTEN outdoor sofa or even the Marcy garden chairs and sofas from John Lewis. And it’s so popular that it sold out in a matter of a few weeks when it first dropped on the site last year. The modular Santorini set is another one of my top recommendations as it can be reconfigured however you want or need, which includes the coffee table which can be separated into two side tables.

2. Swyft

This year, Swyft, known mostly for its quick-delivery sofas and sofa beds, launched its first foray into garden furniture, which can also be yours within 24 hours. And customers are already falling head over heels for the stylish designs, as am I.

The top seller - and my personal favourite piece from the range - is the Garden Sofa Set 03 which champions the striped garden furniture trend. But I’m also taken with the Garden Sofa Set 01, available in a beautiful olive green (my top pick) and a neutral taupe shade, which is the perfect, more affordable alternative for the cult favourite HAY Palissade garden furniture, available at Holloways of Ludlow.

3. Kettler

Kettler is a brand that largely specialises in outdoor furniture and because it’s the company’s focus, they’re really good at it. You can purchase Kettler outdoor furniture directly from Kettler’s site but the brand’s designs are also stocked at other retailers including John Lewis and Next, if that’s easier for you.

My current favourite from Kettler is the Meadow lounge set which I’ve tried in person at John Lewis. I was really impressed with how comfortable it was and how stylish and midcentury the shape of the chairs looked. And the green shade of the cushions goes really well with the stain of the acacia wood. The Cora collection is a firm classic that I’ve been recommending since last for its chic rope detailing and acacia wood frame. And this range also includes the 5-seat lounge set.

4. John Lewis

I’m a big fan of John Lewis’ garden furniture and the retailer manages to impress me with its new designs each year. The only downside is that they tend to sell out of the best pieces quite early on – the Marcy lounge set is already out of stock, for example. But there are still some great pieces available, however, I’m not sure for how much longer.

My top pick would be the new John Lewis Sahara modular lounge set which features an aluminium frame with a wood-effect finish. Or, in keeping with the striped garden furniture trend, the Marlow lounge set is also super chic, even though a little bit more formal in style perhaps. And it’s also made from aluminium which is the most durable type of outdoor furniture.

5. Barker and Stonehouse

Barker and Stonehouse is my go-to place for garden lounge sets that look designer but won’t cost you an arm and a leg. While the brand’s garden furniture is not exactly ‘cheap’, the products look more expensive than their mid-range price tags, and the brand runs sales on a regular basis, including right now.

I’m obsessed with the unusual rope detailing on the eucalyptus wood frame of the Trezzone garden lounge set, while the clean lines of the Tignale set look really elevated and Mediterranean.

6. Atkin & Thyme

If you’re craving colour in your outdoor space, Atkin & Thyme has got you covered with its range of garden furniture. While the offering is quite varied, it’s the metal lounge sets in vibrant shades of terracotta and green that I keep coming back for. And what’s even better is that they’re all made from powder-coated aluminium which, as I’ve already mentioned, is incredibly durable and rust-resistant.

I’m particularly taken with the Olivia lounge set in bright terracotta and the Lauren set in olive green, both of which also feature rope detailing on the seating for extra intrigue. And the Olivia set even comes with a set of nesting tables which is very clever and not very common when it comes to outdoor furniture. 7. Cox & Cox

I’m not usually a big fan of faux rattan and the material does get a bit of a bad rep for not being very aesthetically pleasing or tasteful. But it is practical and weather-resistant – so if you’re after a faux rattan lounge set, I’d recommend Cox & Cox above all others. The brand reimagines the material in chic and unexpected shapes and patterns as seen on the Borgund set that I can fully get behind.

8. Neptune

If you have a bigger budget to spend on your outdoor lounge set, I can’t recommend Neptune’s offering enough. Last year, I fell in love with the brand’s outdoor sofa from the Longmeadow range which is back this year – and it also features a four-seater lounge set. Much like Cox & Cox, Neptune is also very good at making faux wicker look expensive and even real. I will never stop being impressed by the intricate pattern seen on all the pieces from the Longmeadow collection.

But Neptune does lots of different materials really well. That includes teak wood, considered the very best wood for outdoor furniture, as seen in the minimalist lines of the Kew lounge set. Or you can opt for the very decorative and stylish galvanised steel of the Cheltenham set adorned with Regency metalwork-inspired curved detailing. And the brand is currently running an offer which saves you £200 on every £1000 you spend on garden furniture.

Garden furniture season is upon us, and by that I mean now is the best time to invest in new pieces or whip your current seating set up into shape for the arrival of the UK’s first bank holiday of 2026. If you’re due an upgrade, Lidl is offering some seriously chic garden furniture buys, including a £15 parasol that could rival one currently on sale at John Lewis for £71.

While Lidl might not be your first thought when thinking about where to buy garden furniture, this latest drop, which lands in stores on Thursday (2 April), has honestly impressed me. It looks stylish, is incredibly affordable and is, of course, practical.

Garden parasols were quickly crowned as a must-have feature of any stylish garden, and we’re seeing this trend continue into summer 2026. They were also quick to sell out, so I’d recommend buying your dream parasol soon rather than later this year.

At just £14.99, Lidl’s best parasol designs are some of the cheapest I’ve seen this year, and look incredibly chic, too. They're similar to John Lewis’ Wood-Effect Wind-Up Parasol (was £89, now £71.20), or Habitat’s 2.7m Water Repellent Garden Parasol (£75).

The Lidl parasol has effective UV protection, is water repellent, and its height is adjustable from 168cm to 248cm. However, it doesn’t come with a stand. The pole bottom is 32mm thick, and would fit a base like Dunelm’s Black Concrete Parasol Base (£25), which is designed for poles between 30mm and 38mm in thickness.

As well as the parasol, I also think the Livarno Home Garden Sofa Set (£79.99) is worth looking at. Ideal for gardens, patios and balconies, this set consists of two chairs, a sofa and a coffee table. UV and weather-resistant, it has a power-coated steel frame, and the table has a high-quality black glass top, so you can expect it to be sturdy.

It’s also £20 cheaper than when it first went on sale last June (it was originally £99.99). While it’s definitely not the most exciting garden furniture set to look at, it is incredibly affordable and looks quite smart.

If you don’t have a Lidl local to you, I’ve tracked down a few more affordable garden furniture buys that you can shop online.

If you’re looking to give your garden furniture a glow-up on a budget this April, Lidl’s garden event is not one to miss.

Spring is officially here and with it, the al fresco dining and hosting season is just around the corner. So this is the perfect time to get your outdoor space ready – and if your dining set is in need of an update, the new Dunelm Amazonia cube garden dining set would be my top recommendation. Especially if you’re short on space, as this cube dining set is one of the best space-saving solutions I’ve seen this season.

I first came across the Dunelm Amazonia range last week when giving our guide to the best garden furniture a seasonal overhaul – I was impressed with the chic, boho-style Amazonia corner sofa set, which is already sold out in the natural colourway.

Then over the weekend, I spotted the matching dining set, perfect for small garden ideas, all over my Instagram and TikTok. So I predict it won’t be long before it sells out, too.

Selling for £649, the set includes a dining table with four dining chairs that perfectly slot within the table when not in use so they don’t take up any extra space. But that’s not all. Most cube dining sets can offer that but this dining set comes with four extra stools, each of which slots underneath one of the dining chairs – so even though this design takes up very little space, it can seat 8 people altogether. Don’t tell me you’re not impressed – because I sure am!

I’m also a big fan of the look of the dining set, made with a beige-coloured steel frame with woven rope detailing seen both on the dining chairs and the table underneath the glass tabletop. The curved edges of the design, a huge garden furniture trend this year, make it more elevated and perfect for small spaces.

‘Curved frames, rounded edges and cocooning shapes bring a slightly grander presence while still maintaining the effortless, relaxed feel,’ says John Rastall, head of home at DFS.

Even though the coordinating corner sofa set is currently out of stock, if you’re after a matching moment, Dunelm also offers the Amazonia 4-seater conversation set which is still available.

Dunelm is always one of my go-tos when it comes to garden furniture ideas – whether it’s a statement colourful piece like Dunelm’s Sophie Robinson collab or a budget-friendly bistro set. And even though the Amazonia dining set is brand new, it already has one five-star review from a very happy customer. And I’m sure there will be more soon.

This garden furniture sale couldn’t have been better timed as we head into spring bank holidays and the warmer months. If you spot something you like, now is the time to buy.

It's hard to think of an outdoor furniture item that captured our attention last year quite as much as the Marcy sling chair. It kept selling out, and more than one member of the Ideal Home team had a product alert set up to try and nab one for themselves.

But for 2026 we're going all-in with the John Lewis Marcy Garden Sofa, set to be the next garden must-have. If there's anything with the potential to turn any outdoor space into a true extra room, it's this affordable garden sofa.

In 2025, our Room Decor Editor (and seating expert) Sara Hesikova, called the Marcy chair 'the most comfortable chair' she had ever sat on, thanks to its cloud-like cushions and supportive structure.

The chair was a constant sell-out, both in its original striped design and this year John Lewis has bought the Marcy chair back in a trio of vibrant new colours.

Having only taken up gardening in recent years, my garden style is still evolving. But one look, I am drawn to and would love to introduce more of it in my own space is Mediterranean garden style.

Plus, when growing agapanthus, it’s easy to care for, thriving in sunny spots with well-drained soil.’

‘Euphorbia is another versatile plant that complements the Mediterranean aesthetic with its architectural form and vibrant foliage. With a wide range of varieties available, from low-growing ground covers to tall shrubs, Euphorbia offers gardeners plenty of options for adding colour and texture to their outdoor spaces in a Mediterranean-inspired way.’

Terracotta pots filled with brightly-coloured geraniums, hibiscus or petunias are a staple of any Mediterranean garden, but rather than random pots here and there, it’s all in the staging. Container ideas create extra impact when packed together en masse, whether pots, planters, urns and amphoras, grouped in clusters on a patio, raised on tiered planters and on ledges or staggered on steps and around entryways.

Grouping planters together also makes for easier watering, and foliage will shade and protect neighbouring plants from drying out.

3. Add a focal point olive tree

Olive trees are synonymous with Mediterranean gardens, and a mature tree makes a fabulous focal point positioned centrally in a courtyard or patio, or set in pairs to frame a door or flank a pathway.

Easy to grow in containers and requiring very little maintenance, install uplighting at the base of any small garden tree to highlight its shape and texture or try underplanting an olive tree with low-growing plants like lavender, thyme or white geraniums around the base of the olive.

4. Go for gravel underfoot

In hot climates, grass lawns can be a challenge to maintain, especially when water is scarce, so low-maintenance gravel pathways or seating areas are quite common. And gravel doesn’t absorb and retain heat (like paving slabs), so it will help keep the area cooler during the warmer months.

I’ve been considering adding a gravel pathway to my garden for a while and possibly getting rid of the grass altogether. A wide pathway, in a combination of slabs and gravel, will add a rustic vibe, combined with Mediterranean-style planting along the edges, such as fragrant lavender or rosemary that will release its scent as visitors brush past.

5. Paint walls a standout shade

When it comes to outdoor wall ideas, painting an exterior wall a bold colour is super-easy and creates a vibrant backdrop for plants and greenery - a technique that is commonplace in Mediterranean countries.

Warm earthy tones like terracotta, sand and ochre echo the sun-baked vibe and rustic appeal and blend effortlessly with natural landscaping materials and greenery. ‘Natural stone also works well outdoors and really brings to life the landscape aspects of Mediterranean scenery. Ensure that the stone has a rougher finish to give it that aged appearance.’

7. Set up a seating area

Somewhere to sit back, relax and take in the garden is a must. I’ve got two seating areas, one at each end of the garden, so I can take in the sun (or escape the heat) depending on the weather and time of day.

When it comes to garden seating ideas, traditional wooden garden furniture, shapely wrought iron pieces or all-weather woven seating all suit a relaxed Mediterranean vibe and can be paired with classic tiled tables, simple stone benches or more modern concrete pieces.

2026 will be the year that I invest in new garden furniture. I say this because I also told myself the same last year — alas, the dreary bamboo-style set I bought 5+ years ago is still sitting sad on my decking. I have a south-facing garden, which you can bet I spend every minute enjoying the minute that the Great British sunshine makes an appearance.

I don't have a big budget, so I've been trawling the web to find a set that fits with my current black dining set, and I think I've found a bargain at George Home, ASDA, for less than £300: the Tuscany 4 Piece Garden Sofa Set in Black.

This stylish set is similar to the IKEA HAVSTEN set, which is one of the best garden furniture sets for comfort, but the George Home set is a fraction of the price. Now George Home has already impressed us this year with the George Home Tuscany bistro set, but if, like me, you need something more substantial for your decking ideas, then this is the set to snap up.

£288 is an incredible price to pay for this entire set, which also comes in green. The Tuscany Sofa Set seats 4, it's fitted with weather-resistant fabric cushions which have handy removable spun polyester covers. Better yet, its metal frame is corrosion-resistant. Assembly is required, but once it's built, it'll be sure to bring a modern yet cosy feel to your outdoor space.

Since I'm set on buying this set, I thought I'd give the rest of the George Home outdoor buys a glance. I also need a parasol, as come mid-summer, my south-facing garden becomes both a blessing and a curse. I'd love a rug to bring a cosy feel to this sofa set, and most importantly, I've committed myself to growing my own herbs and vegetables, so I'm going to need some pretty planters to help me out.

A good garden furniture set will last you for at least 5 years, if not more — so it's worth buying something with a timeless feel. Boho garden ideas have been an enduring trend for the last decade, so I'm confident this set will not date quickly.

However, B&Q isn't the only brand knocking it out of the park with their boho-looking garden furniture this year. Here are a few other pieces I'm also considering.

The cobblestone streets of Paris are filled with sources of inspiration – and one of the iconic designs synonymous with the city’s blossoming gardens, the green Paris park chair, is having a major moment right now, going viral on social media. If you’re looking to recreate this very Parisienne look in your own garden, you’re in luck because Habitat is selling a lookalike Annika garden bistro set for just £99, available at Argos.

If you’ve ever visited the likes of Jardin du Luxembourg or Jardin des Tuileries in Paris, then I guarantee you’ve come across these green metal slatted outdoor chairs scattered around these legendary parks.

I know that Habitat has some of the best garden furniture out there, selling at great prices on top of that. That’s why I regularly recommend it, whether it’s the new Global rattan garden chair and matching footstool or the bestselling Indu garden bench. And yet, the brand still manages to surprise and impress me with the likes of the Annika garden bistro set which features pretty much the perfect colour match to the Paris park chairs, as well as an almost identical design. And the set of two chairs also comes with a coordinating table as an added bonus.

Existing customers have also been impressed by the Habitat Annika set, with one review saying, ‘I am really pleased with this patio set – it is a fresh shade of green and is the perfect size for my small garden.’

Paris is known as the city of extraordinary style (as well as the city of love, city of lights etc.). So giving your outdoor space a little touch of that Parisienne je ne sais quoi is only going to elevate it and make it look more stylish.

As the weather is slowly but surely starting to warm up, it’s prime time to start addressing (and dressing) your garden. Early spring is one of the best times to invest in new outdoor furniture as stock levels are at its best and you have enough time to make considered and informed purchases. And if you want to make your outdoor space look stylish in 2026, I recommend investing in the striped garden furniture trend.

I love it when I come across great home buys by sheer chance – and that’s exactly what happened when I stumbled upon George Home’s Riviera striped metal garden bench when searching for something completely different. And yet, I predict this will be this year’s ‘it’ buy – especially since it’s only £149!

But as it goes with ‘it’ buys, they get popular really quickly and sell out even quicker. So it’s most likely that this bench won’t hang around with its budget-friendly price tag and super stylish look. I think it's a contender for one of the best garden furniture buys of 2026. So much so that if I were in the market for a garden bench this year, this is the one I’d buy.

Striped outdoor furniture is one of the biggest garden furniture trends this year – and it’s one that many brands are taking on board, including John Lewis with its bestselling Marcy garden chair, sofa and more. And one that the rest of the Ideal Home team are positively obsessed with.
