Yes, this week might have been a washout, but the weather forecast promises there are higher temperatures on the horizon. Now is the time to invest in a handheld fan before they inevitably sell out, and M&S has dropped an almost identical M&S travel fan to the cult £12 John Lewis handheld fan, but at a lower price point.

If you went on a train, underground or bus last summer (or even a few weeks ago), you'll have seen the John Lewis fan in action. It has not only thousands of reviews raving about it, but a fan following on the Ideal Home team, too.

It was one of the first sleek-looking handheld fans, but M&S is coming for its cult title with an even cheaper version at £10. It has a similar sleek profile to the John Lewis version but is available in several stylish neutral colour ways to complement your handbag collection and even your holiday/office outfits.

Now, this portable fan is not going to outperform the best fans at home, but when out and about, these little fans are a game-changer.

Should you choose the M&S or John Lewis handheld fan?

The key difference between these fans is price — the M&S dupe is £2 cheaper. You'll also want to consider colour, if this matters to you. Then comes size as the M&S fan is slightly longer in length, at 25.5cm VS 25.1cm; both are roughly 11cm wide. It's unclear how long it takes the M&S fan to charge, and its battery life, but reviewers claim it's great.

John Lewis has just launched a *very* stylish new sofa bed. In fact, I think this ingenious modular design could become a design icon of the future.

As Ideal Home's Sleep Editor, I've sat on a lot of sofa beds in my time, but over the past five years testing the best sofa beds on the market, I've never seen anything like the brand's latest launch.

What's more, the John Lewis Innovation Living Cozy Pad Sofa Bed hides an emperor bed's worth of sleeping space. That's bigger than a super king bed, and a *lot* of space for overnight guests to stretch out!

Why is this sofa bed so unusual? Because it's a modular design. That means the back cushions and armrests can be detached, and the two layers of seating can be disassembled to create one *enormous* 200 x 200cm sleeping area, or two separate, equally generous single beds.

Or, you can also do a little rejigging of its LEGO-block-like pieces and create a daybed that's perfect for movie nights curled up under a duvet.

When it's in sofa form, the structure is held in place by a minimalist stainless steel frame. Pair those clean lines with the quilted olive green upholstery, and you get a multifunctional sofa bed that looks extremely high-end indeed.

Its modular design is a simple idea on the surface, but one that I haven't seen executed this well before, and the fact that it's designed by Danish brand Innovation Living explains why.

I already dubbed one of the brand's sleeper sofas the most stylish sofa bed on the market, and I think this new launch now gives that Scandi rattan number a run for its money.

Plus, the brand's clever Cubed 140 Sofa Bed was Ideal Home readers' most-shopped sofa bed last year. And little wonder. I've always found Innovation Living's designs to be stylish, practical, and brilliantly designed, so I have no doubt this new launch will be of the same great build quality.

And although in bed form it may look a little 'basic', I actually think that's one of its strengths. There can be a lot of problems with uneven sleeping areas, complicated mechanisms, and armrests that get in the way of sleeping with your average sofa bed.

In contrast, the Innovation Living Cozy Pad simply focuses on providing one giant, well-padded sleeping area.

And whilst this sofa bed certainly isn't 'cheap', its £1649 price tag is what I'd term 'mid-range' in the sofa bed world. When I first saw its distinctive designer look, I was actually expecting it to cost about double that amount, so I do think it's a reasonable price for the combination of stylish good looks, quality, versatility, and its game-changing take on what a sofa bed can be.

But, of course, there are more affordable options on the market, even though, in my opinion at least, they might not *quite* have the same design-icon status that I think the Innovation Living Cozy Pad Sofa Bed is likely to have in the coming years.

It's hard to think of an outdoor furniture item that captured our attention last year quite as much as the Marcy sling chair. It kept selling out, and more than one member of the Ideal Home team had a product alert set up to try and nab one for themselves.

But for 2026 we're going all-in with the John Lewis Marcy Garden Sofa, set to be the next garden must-have. If there's anything with the potential to turn any outdoor space into a true extra room, it's this affordable garden sofa.

In 2025, our Room Decor Editor (and seating expert) Sara Hesikova, called the Marcy chair 'the most comfortable chair' she had ever sat on, thanks to its cloud-like cushions and supportive structure.

The chair was a constant sell-out, both in its original striped design and this year John Lewis has bought the Marcy chair back in a trio of vibrant new colours.

But what about the sofa? Well, it was around last year, too, and while it wasn't launched with the fanfare of the chair, it quickly sold out multiple times itself. This was in part due to its stylish design, but also its affordable price tag of £279. This year, we want to give the sofa the hype it deserves and make sure none of you misses out on the best garden furniture, as nearly happened to our Digital Editor, Rebecca Knight, last year.

'I eventually got my hands on the Marcy garden sofa last year after it sold multiple times,' she says. 'I had to settle for the griege stripe rather than the vibrant orange one I'd been eyeing up, which was completely sold out for the summer, but I don't regret going for the more neutral colourway for a minute.'

While the style is one thing, being part of the Marcy range also means this sofa doesn't compromise an inch on comfort.

'The sofa is so unbelievably comfortable to sit on, and looks so much more expensive than it was,' adds Rebecca. 'I can't wait to get it out of storage for this summer!'

The John Lewis Marcy Garden Sofa is a 2-seater, although one reviewer does mention that the 'size means it's big enough for 3 really (or 2 adults and a child)'. The modern sling design is bang on-trend, and it's currently available in three colours - Greige, Green, and Navy, which is new for this year.

Another huge plus is that the cushions come with a dedicated storage bag so you can store them safely away during the wetter months of the year. Another reviewer mentioned how it's so 'easy to assemble, did it alone in under 20 minutes'.

That said, Rebecca does add that the supreme comfort of the chair does add a slight challenge for storage, saying, 'My one word of warning is make sure you have space to store the cushions, they are generous in size.'

I was shocked how quickly this John Lewis patchwork quilt sold out – the viral hit is back in stock, but I don't think it will be for long

Every time my team of Editors and I see a new homeware collection, we always play the game 'what will sell out first'. Usually, we can pretty easily predict the next viral hit that will be impossible to get your hands on, but the John Lewis Leon Quilted Bedspread took us by surprise in the latest Spring/Summer collection.

I loved the look of the John Lewis quilted bedspread with its earthy colourway when I saw it at the the brand's press show in early February. However, priced at £180, I did not expect it to sell out at the speed it did.

Within 24 hours, it was all over Instagram, and a couple of days later, it was completely sold out. Something I unfortunately found out when I went on the app to try to (unsuccessfully) persuade my partner that we needed it.

After a month of checking the John Lewis website almost daily, I am happy to report that it's finally back in stock. But if you've been waiting for it, I'd recommend acting fast.

Leon Quilted Bedspread, Multi

This wasn't the first time I've been caught out by a John Lewis item selling out, either. Last year, I waited to buy the Marcy outdoor sofa. Big mistake. They flew off the shelves and weren't properly restocked for the rest of the summer. I managed to get hold of one by a fluke restock of the least popular colour, but I wouldn't rely on the same thing happening with this bedspread.

The quilted bedspread is part of the John Lewis 'Rustic' collection, which focuses on pieces that feel handcrafted in rich and earthy colours. That said, this is not your nana's quilt; it has a smart geometric design in this season's hottest colours: earthy pink, olive green, burgundy, sky blue and khaki.

However, while it might be super on trend in terms of colours, fortunately these are also relatively timeless shades that will still look great in a soothing bedroom scheme in five years. Which is something you want when investing in a £180 quilt.

Quilts are classically heirloom pieces, bedspreads that are cherished for generations, and I've enjoyed watching the patchwork quilt trend grow steadily over the last year.

John Lewis currently has one of the best selections, with this gorgeous cotton and linen quilt the perfect example. However, I do also love the more vibrant Puebla Quilted Bedspread, also priced at £180, which has a timeless Prairie-style look about it.

While I do adore these quilts, I'm not currently in the financial position to spend almost £200 on a bedding upgrade, so I've been hunting through the rest of the John Lewis range to find some more affordable buys to help me get a similar look without the price tag.

It seems that John Lewis is eyeing up IKEA's crown when it comes to affordability with the launch of its £150 air fryer microwave, which is just £1 more expensive than the Scandinavian retail giant's version released a few weeks ago.

As Ideal Home's Kitchen Appliances Editor I've seen the appetite for microwave air fryers growing massively, with people looking to save money and worktop space by combining these two essentials into one purchase.

But can the power of the best air fryers and the best microwaves really be combined efficiently? Here's a look at the specifics of this John Lewis air fryer microwave so you can decide for yourself.

2 in 1 functionality

Boasting 10 microwave power levels and a 26 litre capacity, this appliance aims to bring versatility to any kitchen. It has 900W of microwave power and 14 air fryer settings in total.

Just last week premium Italian appliance brand Smeg dropped its very pretty pastel microwave air fryer while Ikea's GÅTEBO version caused a flurry of excitement last month before prompty selling out. So, one thing is for sure: shoppers like the idea of getting two functions for their money with this style of appliance.

While Smeg's offering is more of an attempt to replace the need for a built in oven altogether, this John Lewis version looks much more like a standard microwave. It's boxy and finished in stainless steel with its basic control panel running along the right hand side. While it does feature an LCD timer, its programmed via buttons and a control knob.

This appliance features 14 Air Fry Menus & 10 Presets Menus, which means that plenty of foods, like chips and vegetables, should be able to be cooked at the touch of just one button. It also has one-touch defrost settings as you would expect.

We haven't been able to get our hands on this combi appliance to test just yet, but we're hoping to try it out for ourselves to get a grip on how the air frying works alongside the expected microwaving features.

The price tag of this John Lewis own-brand product is seriously competitive, especially when compared to other appliances of this type sold via John Lewis. Sage's Combi Wave retails for £359 while Panasonic's version is £349 on sale.

If you've been looking to snap up an air fryer microwave without breaking the bank, it seems that this John Lewis version is the (in-stock) one to go for. John Lewis's new homeware range shows that florals can be groundbreaking for spring – these 9 designs prove it

Florals for spring? Well, it turns out they can be groundbreaking when you see the new John Lewis x Anine Cecilie Iversen range. John Lewis has teamed up with the popular Copenhagen-based artist Anine Cecilie Iversen to create a beautiful retro Scandinavian-inspired homeware collection filled with her signature floral designs.

Anine is the artist behind the hugely popular La Poire collection. You will certainly have seen her design of a girl in a green coat and green dress, or her La Poire 'May Tulips', all over the best gallery walls on Instagram. Her artwork is sold all over the world, and John Lewis alone has seen a 60% year-on-year increase in sales from the collection.

The new collection is exclusive to John Lewis and filled with textiles, cushions, rugs, tableware and even makeup bags. If you thought Scandi style was all neutrals and minimalism, this collection proves just how playful and colourful it actually is.

The collection will eventually include 114 pieces, but right now only 42 are available, and I predict they'll become future classics. I saw a few of the star pieces in person at the recent John Lewis Spring and Summer preview, and I've got my eye on the Dahlia cushions, priced at £50.

The cushions feature Anine's signature style of allowing her floral designs to spill over and loop back around to fill each corner of the space. The result is a distinctly modern look that would work in a cottagecore or contemporary scheme.

There is so much in the collection that is a treat for the eye, but these are the showstoppers my team couldn't stop cooing over when we saw the range in person.

I got a little sneak peek of the new range at the retailer’s spring/summer 2026 press preview – and the John Lewis Sahara garden lounge set is the one that stood out for its unique finish that looks convincingly like wood, but is actually metal!

I know it’s still early in the year, and it might seem crazy to be thinking about furnishing your garden already. This week, John Lewis dropped its spring/summer 2026 homeware collection – and I was lucky enough to get an IRL preview of all the most hotly anticipated new pieces. Most of the next collection is already live on the website, with a few others set to launch in the next few weeks. And while there were many beautiful new decor pieces on display, it was the new John Lewis donut lamp that really impressed me.

Why was it such a highlight? For a few reasons. For one, even though it’s called and sold as a ‘table lamp’, it actually also doubles as a wall light and can be used that way. It makes for a great living room lighting idea, and while it comes with a cord that needs to be plugged in, it’s much easier than having to install and wire it, as many other wall lights do. Alternatively, you could opt for a smart rechargeable bulb and scrap the wire altogether.

Donut lamps similar to this one have been a consistent lighting trend ever since the release of the viral IKEA VARMBLIXT lamp which is also widely used both as a table lamp and a wall light. But while the IKEA donut lamp sells for £55, the new John Lewis light is £15 cheaper, retailing for only £40 a pop.

And arguably, I’d say it’s a more elevated and stylish take on the donut lamp look compared to IKEA’s which is a bit more fun, playful and trendy. There’s also more choice when it comes to the John Lewis lamp as it comes in three different earthy colourways you can pick from – my favourite auburn, as well as green and greige, all made with a glossy glazed ceramic base and a frosted glass ball shade on top.

John Lewis has just dropped its sellout Marcy sling garden chair in three new bold colours, and I'd act fast if you want to get your hands on this statement chair, as it was a sellout success when it launched last year.

Last year, by the time summer came around, the John Lewis Marcy sling garden chair was almost impossible to find in stock. I should know, as I was one of the poor people checking the John Lewis app daily to see if this contender for the best garden furniture had come back into stock (spoiler: I did eventually get my hands on the sofa version).

As soon as I sat on the Marcy garden chair at the John Lewis spring/summer 2025 collection preview, I knew it was going to be a hit. It's marshmallow soft to sit on, super stylish and costs a very reasonable £149. Now this year John Lewis has upped its game and dropped it in three seriously on-trend colours: a beautiful burnt orange, fuchsia and golden olive.

Last year, the hero piece in the Marcy collection was the burnt orange stripe garden chair, so out of the three new block colourways, I'm betting my money on the burnt orange selling out first again.

The three new shades are big and bold, giving retro Palm Beach vibes. I had wrongly predicted that this year's garden furniture colour trends might be going in an earthier, more muted direction. If this is a sign of what's to come in 2026, we're in for a vibrant summer.

Each chair is fully drenched in its statement colour with contrast piping picked out in white. However, if you prefer a more subtle look, the Marcy chair and outdoor sofa have also returned in the more muted green and griege stripes. John Lewis hasn't bought back the burnt orange stripe (yet), but it has introduced an elegant navy stripe garden chair to the collection, too.

Last year, I eventually managed to nab the griege Marcy 2-seater garden sofa. I had been after the green, but it was the only colour available at the time, and now I'm quite relieved I went for a neutral colourway as it will go perfectly with the new burnt orange chair.

The Marcy was the centrepiece of my small garden ideas last year, lending a little Soho Home style to my relatively dull concrete space. It is unbelievably comfortable to sit on, too. The plump cushions are the star of the show; they are super plush and shower-proof.

However, the downside of the cushions is that to keep them in good condition, they need to be kept inside and take up a lot of space. Both the sofa and chair come with a storage bag for the cushions, but I had to invest in a dedicated outdoor storage box to keep them safe during downpours and over winter.

I have yet to pull my garden sofa cushions out of storage, so it might feel a little early to be talking about a new best garden chairs. However, after my experience last year, I'm buying early so I don't miss out.

John Lewis interior experts predict a new trend is set to take over our bedrooms in 2026, and it's all about super-sizing your sleep space.

As revealed in the brand's recent 'How we Shop, Live and Look' report, many of us opted to ditch floor space for bed space in 2025, and as more of us prioritise sleeping better, this bedroom trend looks set to continue in 2026.

'People want better sleep,' agrees Jason Wilary-Attew, director of home at John Lewis, and this is how they're achieving it.

Yep, when it comes to where to buy a bed, shopping trends show that more and more of us are deciding that bed size matters.

'The double bed has been consigned to the spare room as customers prioritise sleep space over floor space,' shares Jason Wilary-Attew.

In fact, the John Lewis report reveals sales of double mattresses have dipped by minus 5% compared to the previous year, whereas sales of king-sized beds are up by 23%.

And, perhaps most surprisingly, super king-size bed sales have increased even further, with a rise of 39% compared to the previous year.

The data suggests we've decided sleep matters, and, as Jason shares, 'people are willing to spend more on a king or super king-sized bed and mattress to ensure that.'

But why does a super king bed mean better sleep? Because many of us share a bed with a partner, and sleep disturbance from a co-sleeper is one of the biggest culprits for broken sleep.

It certainly shocked me when I did the maths and calculated how much individual sleeping space we actually get in a double bed if we share it with a partner.

As you'll see above, a standard single mattress measures 90cm across. A double mattress measures 135cm, which means each sleeper is only getting 67.5cm of individual sleeping space.

You need to upgrade to a 180cm wide super king bed to achieve the same individual sleeping area as you would with a single bed. No wonder John Lewis shoppers are biting the bullet and upsizing.

Of course, not all of us have the option of upsizing to a bigger bed. If, like me, you have a small bedroom, then you'll know that every inch of floorspace counts.

However, despite bijou proportions, when I measured up, I realised a king-size bed isn't entirely out of the question in my bedroom. A lot of it comes down to the bed frame you choose.

There are plenty of statement beds out there with wide frames, but look for a divan bed base that doesn't have any additional width beyond the mattress itself, and you may find you can squeeze in an extra 15cm of mattress space after all.

The even better news is that there are currently plenty of bed frames and mattresses discounted in the January sales, so upsizing and upgrading your sleep setup could cost a lot less than you might think.

This month, John Lewis released its How We Shop, Live and Look report for 2025. Based on the behaviours and tendencies of its customers, the retailer identified some of the biggest trends of the past year, most of which are predicted to continue going strong into the New Year. And that includes the new ‘shelf esteem’ trend – a term John Lewis coined and that’s all about showcasing the shelf itself, as much as what’s on it.

The humble shelves have been the focus of several home decor trends over the last few years – do you remember shelfies? Shelf scaping? And bookshelf wealth? But according to the John Lewis 2025 report, which also predicted that ice cream makers will overtake air fryers in popularity in 2026, it’s all about shelf esteem now.

‘We’re seeing a clear shift towards what we’ve coined ‘shelf esteem’ in our How We Shop, Live and Look report – a growing desire to give everyday objects pride of place, rather than hiding them away,’ explains Jason Wilary-Attew, director of home at John Lewis. ‘On johnlewis.com, searches for metal shelving units have surged seven-fold this year compared with 2024, while searches for wide shelving units are up four-fold, signalling a move towards shelving that’s designed to be seen as much as it is used.’

So say goodbye to intentionally invisible and seamless floating shelves as both wall shelving and standalone bookshelves are getting a statement makeover – anything from bold colours and standout materials like dark woods and metals to intriguing shapes goes.

‘Today’s most popular shelving styles are bolder and more expressive – think metal frames, warm woods and darker finishes that add contrast and character. These pieces are less about blending in and more about standing out. Shelf esteem reflects a broader cultural shift: people want their interiors to tell a story, and they’re starting from the shelves up,’ Jason at John Lewis says.

John Lewis has released their annual How we Shop, Live and Look Report, and with it comes a bold prediction for 2026. The retailer predicts ice-cream makers will overtake air fryers as the ‘it’ kitchen appliance.

There’s no denying that ice-cream makers saw a huge surge in popularity, especially during the summer months, with shoppers racing to get their hands on the coveted Ninja Swirl or the rival Cuisinart Frost Fusion, which allowed families to serve up homemade 99s.

But to overtake the best air fryers in popularity? It’s a bold prediction, but one that is seemingly becoming true. Here’s why.

The John Lewis report found an increase in ice-cream maker sales of 17% in 2025, stating that the sales were likely to increase again in 2026 due to the social media trend of using the appliance to make protein-heavy ice creams and frozen smoothies.

A big driver behind the revival is also the new sleek appearance. While ice cream makers used to be big, bulky and noisy, the arrival of the Ninja Creami (£169.99 at Ninja) back in 2022 has transformed the market, making space for sleeker appliances that fit neatly on or under a kitchen worktop.

While air fryers have been a kitchen staple for a number of years now, John Lewis is expecting ice cream makers to reach the same level of cult status.

‘Air fryers remain a kitchen staple, but ice cream makers are quickly becoming the appliance of the moment. At John Lewis, sales of ice cream machines rose by 17% in 2025, while across the John Lewis Partnership, Waitrose has seen double-digit growth in its No.1 ice cream range - driven by quality, flavour innovation and nostalgia,’ says Karen Sime, Kitchen Appliances Buyer at John Lewis.

‘The category has been given fresh momentum by social media, where ice cream makers have gone viral, inspiring a wave of at-home experimentation. From classic flavours to protein-rich frozen smoothies, customers are embracing indulgence with control, knowing exactly what goes into every scoop.

‘While they may not replace everyday essentials, ice cream makers are carving out a lasting role in the kitchen - less about necessity, more about creativity, comfort and moments of joy at home.’

However, not everyone is convinced, considering that while an air fryer can be used in place of an oven, an ice cream maker will get its most use during the summer months.

‘It is unlikely that they will become more popular as air fryers, as air fryers are something that can be used daily in the place of an oven. Although ice cream makers will still probably be popular, they are considered to be more of a niche or novelty appliance that is used occasionally instead of every day,’ says Steve Larkin, a kitchen expert from Kitchen Door Hub.

So, while it’s unlikely that ice cream makers will overtake air fryers in terms of popularity, they are still receiving the same viral hype air fryers received a few years ago. Because of this, we can expect to see them become more and more popular next year, especially as they mean we can create fresh, healthier desserts.

Right in time for Christmas, a selection of stunning new home buys has landed in the John Lewis x Sanderson collection, and I think they make perfect last-minute Christmas gifts.

There’s no disputing that the John Lewis x Sanderson collection is a big deal. Sanderson, the British heritage brand famed for its fabrics and wallpapers, has partnered with the department store giant to produce beautifully patterned homeware over the past year.

While before, we were mightily impressed by Etheridge Pinetum Stripe Accent Chair (£849) and Islington Pinetum Stripe Large 3 Seater Sofa (£2,549), the latest drop features smaller, far more affordable pieces of home decor, which I believe should be added straight to your Christmas wishlist.

My highlight from the latest drop is the Stapleton Park Drum Lampshade (£50), which can be used as a ceiling light or lamp. The striking print comes straight from the Sanderson archive. The Stapleton Park print was first launched in 1990 and designed by Pat Etheridge. It depicts a large-scale floral bouquet in English garden style, featuring an array of roses, cornflowers, foxgloves and hydrangeas, complete with trailing stems and foliage.

The overall look is quintessentially British and very charming, giving it a timeless edge. Plus, its warm red, pink and green shades are wonderfully cosy, making this lamp shade a perfect accompaniment to winter nights.

I thought I’d never see the day but the bestselling John Lewis Cotswold Christmas tree is officially back in stock! The popular artificial tree sold out a few weeks ago, soon after the launch of the retailer’s Christmas shop with reports that it wouldn’t be coming back in stock this year anymore – but to my and many customers’ excitement, it has!

For the past few years, this tree has been not only one of John Lewis’ bestsellers but also the top-rated tree in Ideal Home’s best artificial Christmas tree buying guide. So given the star status of this faux tree, I’m convinced this latest stock drop isn’t going to hang about for very long – so better get yours while it’s still available.

Cotswold Potted Pre-lit Christmas Tree

But if this is your first time hearing about this particular fake Christmas tree, let me introduce you to one of my absolute favourite tree designs on the market and tell you why it’s so special. And yes, it better be special given the £580 price tag which, let’s face it, is not cheap.

The biggest selling point, in my opinion, is just how realistic this tree looks. This is largely due to the high branch tip count of 4275. One of the things that often easily gives away that a tree is fake is the base – which is why I think it’s so clever this tree comes with its own pot so you don’t have to worry about covering the obviously artificial base.

The tree also comes pre-lit with 900 little light bulbs which is super convenient as you don’t have to worry about decorating your tree with your best Christmas lights.

The design of the Cotswold tree remains unchanged compared to the previous years. The only slight difference is the size range – or rather the lack thereof as it used to come in a 6ft and 7ft size. Whereas this year, only the 7ft one has been brought back which I believe is a bit of a shame.

If you’re still thinking of investing in a new Christmas tree this year, I couldn’t recommend the John Lewis Cotswold enough – it’s a real winner!

It’s already the time of year when John Lewis drops their highly anticipated Christmas advert, and while the seasonal cheer and sentiment have hit us right in the feels, this ad is also proof that record players reign supreme as the ‘it’ gift for 2025.

Record players and vinyl have no doubt been enjoying a resurgence for the past couple of years, with music lovers (myself included) preaching our favourite records sound *so* much better on vinyl. So, if you’ve been browsing any early Black Friday deals, it may have occurred to you that a record player could be the greatest gift this Christmas.

Turning music into a moment, record players are the nostalgic gift that we can’t get enough of.

For me, record players are instantly nostalgic, and I have been building up my vinyl collection for a number of years. In fact, instead of soppy cards or wilted flowers, for every anniversary, Valentine’s Day, birthday or Christmas, my boyfriend and I gift each other a vinyl, which feels more intimate than any ‘romantic’ tat grabbed from the shelves.

Last Christmas, my dad got me a first edition Fleetwood Mac record with an original concert programme still in the sleeve, and honestly, it’s one of my most prized possessions and the first thing I said when asked ‘what did you get for Christmas?’.

And if you’re wondering how to decorate and style your twig tree, Alex from Flitch has a few tips on making your twig tree look its best, ‘I’d keep the palette simple with warm white fairy lights, a few glass or wooden ornaments, and maybe a touch of eucalyptus or dried orange for texture. Yesterday John Lewis opened its physical Christmas shop – and to mark the occasion, several festive products were launched both in store and online. My top pick is the John Lewis scented candle advent calendar.

This is one of the best advent calendars out there for the home fragrance lover and the home-obsessed, much like myself. Last year, the calendar sold out in under two weeks.

Even though I’ve got intel from the John Lewis team that this year there are more to go around, I’ve seen a higher demand for all things Christmas this year than ever before. So I don’t expect it to hang around for very long – especially since it’s such good value for money.

Scented Candle & Oils Advent Calendar

Selling for £120, the calendar is filled with fragranced treats for 12 days of December. These include 10 good-sized scented candles and two bottles of essential oils from some of my favourite brands that also happen to be stocked by John Lewis, including Aery, Neom and Skandinavisk.

Upon my calculations, the products themselves cost closer to £170 and that’s not taking the beautifully designed calendar itself into account, adorned with a harlequin pattern - I’m telling you, it’s one of the biggest Christmas decor trends this year - and magical illustrations of the sun and the moon.

What are some of the standout products included, you might ask. I’m delighted to see not one but two of the best scented candles from Skandinavisk, a Danish brand that’s managed to fly under the radar for a very long time but which is among my absolute favourites. And it’s the seasonally appropriate scents from the brand that made it in, namely the Skog candle with notes of pine, fir and birch, and the Jul candle, which is basically Christmas in a candle form, blending gingerbread, cloves, spiced orange and mulled wine into one.

Neom’s limited-edition Christmas Wish candle in the travel size is also included. I can’t decide whether I love it more for the scent that’s a more relaxing take on the festive classics like mandarin, cinnamon and tonka bean, or for the pretty pink ombre packaging.

If you have an electric diffuser or an oil burner, you’ll also appreciate the Neom Real Luxury oil. It is a calming blend of 19 different essential oils - including lavender, sandalwood and jasmine.

With many beautiful advent calendars on offer this year - from The White Company’s calendar design to the luxurious Jo Malone and Diptyque advent calendars - it’s difficult to choose the one. But if you’re more into a beautifully smelling home than skincare and makeup, this would be the one I’d go for.

When I previewed the John Lewis autumn/winter 2025 homeware range a couple of months ago, there were a handful of pieces that really stood out to me – the coordinating John Lewis Hoxton armchair and the Curve dining armchair were among those few. And now they’re available to shop!

Along with the new but already iconic John Lewis Pleat sofa, the Hoxton and Curve chairs were the items from the new collection that I would love to have in my own home – and if I had the space (and was allowed to, of course) I would have carried them right out of that John Lewis autumn/winter showcase.

The Hoxton lounge chair has been available for a few weeks now, and is rising in popularity too. Sales of the chair increased by 66% last week compared to the week before. However, I’ve been obsessively checking each week for the Curve dining chair to drop, and it finally did!

Both of these retro-inspired designs champion the chrome furniture trend which is getting more and more prominent. And they come in the hottest colour of the year – a chocolate brown dubbed by John Lewis ‘cocoa’ which the retailer also named its colour of the season.

‘Cocoa is our colour of the season for autumn/winter 2025 and felt like the natural choice for these hero pieces as it’s rich, grounding and quietly luxurious,’ says Daniel Rawlings, lead furniture designer at John Lewis. ‘It’s a shade that brings warmth and sophistication in equal measure.’

And even though the Hoxton and Curve chairs are not necessarily bold, statement designs, they will quietly elevate your space with their stylish look that appears much more expensive and high end than their respective £349 and £179 price tags.

‘Both the Hoxton Armchair and Curve Dining Armchair were inspired by a love of sculptural form and retro glamour – reimagined for how we live now. They nod to the past, but feel firmly of the present. They stand out for their sculptural shapes and considered details – pieces with real presence, designed to elevate any space,’ Daniel says.

Part of John Lewis’ Modern Luxe trend, this style is defined by retro-inspired curved silhouettes, rich textures and an earthy colour palette of browns and greens redefined for contemporary living.

Daniel concludes with a few tips on how to style these chic chairs, ‘These pieces are ideal for layered, characterful interiors, pairing well with burl wood, marble, or smoked glass. For a calm, tonal aesthetic, combine them with soft neutrals. For a bolder statement, contrast them with brass and rich colours.’

This is not a drill, the John Lewis online Christmas shop 2025 is officially open! I know we’ve only just welcomed the start of September – but as soon as summer comes to an end and the first browning leaves appear on the streets, it’s only natural our attention turns to early Christmas prep! Especially because the likes of John Lewis Christmas decorations don’t hang around for long.

Year after year, the moment John Lewis’ Christmas baubles and other whimsical Christmas ideas and decorations drop, they start selling like hot cakes! This was the case with last year’s John Lewis Christmas collection – and many of my predictions did come true with my top picks like the disco ball cherries among the first to sell out.

This year is no exception as customers are already shopping the Christmas offering with fervour. If I had to pick one look I’m excited about this Christmas, it would be this one. Enchanting Tales is a theme filled with bold patterns and colours and fun. It feels like something new and fresh – so, of course, I love it. Based on theatre motifs and the festive tradition of pantomime, jewel tones and golds are paired with stripes and harlequin patterns – I can't wait for the Shatterproof Harlequin Baubles to launch. It’s glamorous but super playful – the perfect combination for Christmas, if you ask me.

2. Heirloom Splendour

If you've been hunting the high street for a sofa bed worthy of floor space in your home recently, then you'll definitely want John Lewis' most recent launch on your radar.

Available online and in-store, the Innovation Living Cane Sofa Bed scores some serious style points, and, based on my testing of other sofa beds in the Innovation Living range, it promises to be comfortable too – something of a miracle in the world of sleeper sofas.

Incorporating French cane side panels, this sofa bed is a statement piece you won't want to hide away.

Designed by Danish furniture company Innovation Living, the Cane Sofa Bed is a riff on the brand's bestselling Cubed 140 Sofa Bed.

As Ideal Home's Sleep Editor, I first tested Innovation Living's sofa bed range four years ago, and I still rate the Cubed 140 as one of the best sofa beds you can buy.

My only gripe with the Cubed 140 – other than its price – is that it looks a little... functional. Perfect for a home office, but would I want it in prime position in my living room? Personally, not.

In comparison, the new Cane Sofa Bed has a similar seating set-up to the Cubed 140, but with oh-so-stylish cane side panels that elevate it into a sofa bed I'd be more than happy giving centrestage in my main living space.

I haven't yet tested the Cane Sofa Bed in person, but because that seating arrangement looks almost identical to the Cubed 140, I'm confident it's going to be equally comfortable.

It also mirrors another of the Cubed 140's great selling points; despite only taking up a modest H73 x W153 x D92cm of floor space, it transforms into a double bed-sized sleeping area. That's a rarity in the world of sofa beds, which tend to offer sleeping areas much smaller than standard bed sizes.

No wonder the Cane Sofa Bed is already scoring highly with John Lewis reviewers, with full marks given by all of its owners so far.

'We just assembled the sofa bed and are excited to actually use it. It's comfortable both as a sofa and a bed, which is rare,' says one 5-star reviewer. 'The bamboo detailing looks great and fits well with our interior.'

'Easy to assemble, excellent quality, looks and functions well as a sofa, and very easy to convert into a comfortable sofa bed,' shares another 5-star reviewer.

As someone who's spent four years testing out sofa beds, I can assure you that finding a stylish *and* comfortable sofa bed is no mean feat. I've tested numerous promising-looking sofa beds that felt as hard as bricks when I sat or lay down. So, although this sofa bed doesn't come cheap, if you're looking for a sofa bed that can double up as actual everyday seating, that price tag could well be worth it.

You might just need to move fast to bag one. As one reviewer says, 'when it comes into stock you have to be quick,' because whilst the 'Natural' colourway is available to shop, the Cane Sofa Bed in Avella Pine is currently sold out.

However, if your budget doesn't stretch to investing in the Cane Sofa Bed, all is not lost. I haven't found a sofa bed that offers quite such trend-setting design as those webbed side panels, but there are other options.

Looks-wise, the Dunelm Mila Rattan Sofa Bed is the closest alternative I've found, and at £449 it's considerably cheaper. But I can't vouch for its comfort as I haven't tested it, and it doesn't have great reviews online. (If you've sat or lain down on it, let me know how it fares in the comment section!).

Instead, although these options might lack that cane detailing, these are my top three alternative recommendations for combining style, comfort, *and* affordability.

Roma Small Double Boucle Chairbed

If you're looking for a stylish sofa bed on a budget, this is always my top recommendation. In my opinion, it's too firm to use as everyday seating, but it makes a great accent chair and offers a sleeping area for one. It also has a small footprint ideal for small spaces, which is why I think it's one of the best chair beds you can buy.

IKEA

TORNSBORG Sofa Bed

It doesn't have quite the same wow-factor as the Cane Sofa Bed, but if you tend towards Scandi minimalism, this new IKEA TORNSBORG Sofa Bed launch is the one I'd opt for as a compromise between style and affordability. It offers a double sleeping space, and I found it as comfortable as Innovation Living's range during testing.

Habitat

Julien Fabric 4 Seater Sofa Bed - Taupe

If you prefer a sofa bed that looks more like a classic sofa, then Habitat has just launched the Julien 4-Seater Sofa Bed, which more than fits the bill. At 238cm wide it won't fit into a small living room the way the 154cm width Cane Sofa Bed can, but if you're looking for plenty of seating space, that may be a plus point.

As we find ourselves on the cusp of a new season, transitioning from hot summer to cosy autumn, this is the time when the new collections start to drop. Every brand has its stars and hero pieces – when previewing the John Lewis autumn/winter 2025 offering last month, it was the John Lewis Pleat sofa that shone the brightest for me. And it’s finally available to buy!

Having tried and tested around 250 sofas at this point, including some of the best sofas on the market, I feel comfortable saying that it’s an icon in the making. It’s super comfortable, with deep seats made with foam crafted from recycled post-consumer mattresses, and incredibly stylish and unique.

The Pleat sofa has a timeless look, referencing art deco-style shapes and aesthetic, but it also manages to hit more than one of the biggest sofa trends of the moment.

Retailing for £3299, it's not the cheapest of sofas. But it is very generously sized, super comfortable and stylish, all of which makes this a worthwhile investment in my opinion. An option with the chaise on the left is also available.

It hits the curved sofa trend box with the curved shape of both the seat and armrests. Then there is the warm brown default shade, one of the biggest sofa colour trends this year and likely beyond.

The lovely tactile texture of the on-trend chenille material is just the cherry on top, plus it will be delivered within 7 days.

What makes the Pleat sofa special

But the part that really sets this sofa apart from the rest is the pleated base, after which it was named. ‘The Pleat sofa blends low-slung comfort with retro-inspired texture and shaping,’ says Mia Larden, homeware designer at John Lewis, who’s responsible for the design of the Pleat sofa. ‘Soft curves invite you in, while the velvet upholstery and pleated plinth add a refined richness that makes it an instant classic. The pleating was a detail I was set on from the start.’

She continues, ‘Initially, I pictured it running along the seat back, but as the shape evolved, it became clear that it wouldn’t work as I’d imagined. Moving it to the plinth proved to be the perfect solution – it kept the detail I loved, broke up what could have been a solid block of fabric, and allowed us to explore fabric manipulation in a fresh, unexpected way. It’s a feature that truly elevates the design.’

If you want your Pleat sofa delivered within a week, it’s only available as a four-seater with a chaise in the brown ‘Ginger’ chenille upholstery, selling for £3299. I’m a big fan of modular sofas so I appreciated that this design can be broken up into two parts, separating the chaise section from the rest of the sofa.

But if you can wait 12 weeks - which is not an uncommon length of time for a new sofa to arrive - there is also the made-to-measure option where you can choose from over 90 different fabrics, as well as a three-seater size starting at £1849.

The three-seater version features the same pleated base and curved armrests/backrest. But it comes in one piece and can't be separated into two parts like the chaise version.

The Pleat sofa is part of the John Lewis’ Modern Luxe trend of the season, defined by curved and sculptural silhouettes, luxurious materials and textures and a colour palette of earthy browns and greens.

‘I picture the Pleat in a space that’s warm, inviting, and layered with texture. In Soft Chenille Ginger, it pairs effortlessly with earthy tones, natural woods, and sculptural silhouettes - striking that balance between luxury and ease. The Modern Luxe trend was my favourite aesthetic when visiting the John Lewis autumn/winter 2025 press showcase. Here are some more of my top picks from the look.

The chrome furniture trend is dominating this season's new collections, including John Lewis' offering. This chrome and chocolate brown chenille accent chair is the perfect example of how to do it well.

And John Lewis didn't stop at chairs with the chrome furniture look. This aptly named Retro side table (with a matching coffee table also available) pairs the cool metal beautifully with an amber-coloured tabletop.

A few days ago, John Lewis gave me (and fellow journalists) an early preview of their new upcoming range. And just like every season, the first look at the John Lewis autumn/winter 2025 collection left me excited about what’s to come over the next few months – not to mention that the showcase made me want to take a few of the pieces home with me.

There are a couple of exciting partnerships on the way, as well as stylish themes and chic pieces of furniture and homeware, some of which further confirming some of the biggest home decor trends. And it was fully confirmed that earthy green and brown are the new neutrals replacing beige and grey in the interiors space. And I’m so here for that!

While most of the newness is set to launch this August, and the collaborations dropping in September and October, there are also certain hero products that caught my eye and are available to shop now already, as was the case with the John Lewis spring/summer 2025 collection.

The furniture

There are some great things coming from John Lewis in the seating category. Firstly, the Pleat sofa (as pictured above) was the best sofa at the showcase in my opinion and it’s new to the John Lewis sofa offering.

Inspired by art deco, the £3,299 curved chaise design features a discreetly pleated base and comes in delicious brown velvet. It’s a very warm and rather bright shade of brown that’s reflective and won’t absorb too much light.

And since I love modular sofas, I was glad to see that this design can also be separated into two parts.

Secondly, it was the Curve accent chair and co-ordinating dining chair which John Lewis predicts will be the bestseller of the season.

Inspired by the 70s aesthetic, they both come in the shade that the retailer crowned as its colour of the season, a chocolate brown called ‘cocoa’, and feature one of the major interior and living room trends of 2025 – chrome hardware.

If I had been was allowed, I would have carried that accent chair right out of there and put it in my living room!

Chrome legs were also seen on the John Lewis Retro coffee table and matching side table with amber glass tabletop.

These were also designed with the 70s style in mind and looked perfect next to the brown Pleat sofa and the Lozenge sofa in a forest green shade, and are actually already available online.

Before we move onto the cool new collaborations, the last thing I want to call out is the burl finish that can be seen on a round coffee table (which is already live!) and a soon-to-come bedside table that John Lewis also highlighted as the look of the season.

The collaborations

On 1st October, John Lewis is launching a collection of tableware, table linens, cookware and even food storage containers created in collaboration with Deliciously Ella founder, Ella Mills.

A colour palette of green paired with natural shades and vegetable motifs, seen especially on the tableware and table linens, define the range – the salt and pepper shakers taking on the shape of two little beetroots were among the highlights for me.

It was at the spring/summer 2025 press showcase that John Lewis introduced its first collaboration with Sanderson. At this event, the retailer presented a second installment of the partnership with the brand known for traditional, nature-inspired prints and patterns which is set to become available from this September.

But while last time, the offering focused on the living room and bedroom with bed linen, cushions, table lamps, armchairs and sofas, this season, it’s more about bringing those bold and colourful patterns into the dining room as we approach hosting season. New cushion and quilt designs will also be part of the range.

With Christmas coming up, John Lewis is really taking its gifting department to the next level, with new brands becoming available as part of the offering.

This includes more well-known brands such as The Conran Shop and its glassware or Miffy stuffed toys which are growing in popularity even among teenagers and young adults.

There will also be more cult brands such as &k Amsterdam which is the brand behind the viral house-shaped butter dish. And, in fact, butter dishes in general have been having something of a moment as their sales have been increasing at John Lewis.

As already mentioned, there are some pieces that I spotted at the preview that are actually already available to buy now. And these pieces would be my top picks.

Burl Round Coffee Table

The irregular wood pattern of burl is the star of the season, according to John Lewis. That's why it appears on this coffee table, as well as a co-ordinating side table, a set of nesting tables and a bedside table.

John Lewis Classic Bobbin Armchair

With the bobbin detailing on the armrests and front legs, this is an interesting take on a traditional armchair that brings chic vintage styles to mind.

Mushroom XL Table Lamp in Polished Chrome

Chrome is having a major moment this year. As well as in furniture, you can incorporate the metallic finish through smaller accessories like this mushroom lamp that I also spotted at the show.

Multi Scallop Hand Painted Photo Frame

I saw this double-scalloped photo frame pop up more than once at this season's preview. The Mocha and Blue colourways are currently sold out, but the Green and Red also look super chic.

Retro Glass Coffee Table in Amber

This coffee table in amber glass features the chrome furniture trend in a stylish, retro way. It looks super sleek and light, perfect as a small living room idea. And if you don't have the space, opt for the side table instead.

Bobbin Floor Lamp Base

It was bobbin galore in one corner of the showcase as this beautifully lacquered red bobbin floor lamp created in collaboration with designer Matthew Williamson stood next to the armchair with bobbin armrests and legs. And it looked great!

John Lewis just launched a big garden furniture sale and has included my favourite John Lewis outdoor sofa of this season, the Lozenge garden sofa, which is currently 20% off.

It's my job to spot the best garden furniture deals, and the John Lewis sale starts this week and ends on 1st July, is not to be missed. If you’ve got your eye on something, I recommend snapping it up asap. You know how it is with sales – things go fast and once it’s gone, it’s gone.

The Lozenge garden sofa is my stand out star of the sale as it only launched this year. There are three different sizes and configurations of the garden sofa available in the sale, with prices starting at £799.20 (down from £999) for a four-seater up to £1199.20 (down from £1499) for a five-seater with a coordinating coffee table.

Based on the John Lewis Lozenge sofa for the living room, the outdoor version of the Lozenge is new to the retailer’s offering this year. And I was instantly a fan as soon as I saw it at the John Lewis spring/summer 2025 press preview.

For starters, the John Lewis Lozenge garden sofa is a modular design which means it can be separated into multiple sections to fit your needs and your outdoor space. It comes in either two or three parts, depending on the size you go for.

I’m a big advocate for modular sofas, including the outdoor kind. I think they're the best future-proof piece of furniture you can buy to grow and contract with your family and home size.

The curved design is also right on trend as curves and organic shapes have been one of the biggest home decor trends over the last couple of years, now it's made its way to the garden. It’s a very modern garden furniture idea to incorporate into your outdoor space, which will both soften its look and make it more interesting.

Last but not least, the frame is made from powder-coated aluminium, one of the most durable types of garden furniture due to the material's natural resistance to rusting, making it the superior choice over stainless steel.

Weighing up M&S versus John Lewis bedding? As a Sleep Editor, I've tested both brands, and this is my go-to store

To my mind, when it comes to a battle of the bedding, there are two clear high street contenders; Marks & Spencer and John Lewis.

When I first moved out of home, like many of us, my idea of where to buy bedding revolved around supermarket homeware ranges; convenient and affordable, I thought bedding was bedding, right? Why spend a fortune when I could pick up a pack of pillows in the homeware aisle whilst doing my weekly food shop?

However, fast forward a few years and my pillows were flat and unsupportive and my sheets either shrunken in the wash or bobbling badly.

Whilst affordable bedding serves a purpose, I soon learnt the wisdom in that old adage 'buy cheap, buy twice'.

So began my search for better quality bedding, and like many of us, I headed straight to good old M&S and John Lewis once my budget could stretch.

Safe to say, the quality of both brands is head and shoulders above those old supermarket purchases, but, if you're on the hunt for the best pillows or best duvet for your bed, which is better overall, Marks & Spencer bedding or John Lewis bedding?

In my experience, the quality of both brands is neck-and-neck. Both have very similar product ranges when it comes to their core bedding offering, and I've never been disappointed by either of their respective bedding ranges.

Recently, both stores have also launched some great collaborations with other brands, from the M&S x Fired Earth bedding range, to John Lewis' stocking of Piglet in Bed and floks.

The only slight difference I've observed is that, in general, John Lewis products tend to be *slightly* more expensive than M&S when it comes to their own-brand lines. It's this factor that has made M&S bedding my go-to store when kitting out my own home.

Pillows

For instance, I highly rate both brands' duck feather and down pillows. Both are made with an 85% duck feather and 15% down mix, and are Responsible Down Standard certified. However, M&S offers a two-pack for £39.50 (that's £19.75 each), whereas John Lewis offers one pillow for £22.

I've had these M&S pillows for over two years now, and they're still going strong. At £19.75 each, that's incredibly good value for feather and down.

In comparison, this John Lewis duck feather and down pillow is £22 for one pillow. Although if you only *need* one pillow, it could be the better buy!

Duvets

It's a similar story when it comes to both brands' bestselling duvets; easy-care synthetic duvets featuring a recycled microfibre polyester fill. The most popular 10.5 tog option starts from £29.50 for a single at M&S, whereas the 10.5 tog warmth rating at John Lewis starts from £32. An M&S double is £35 and a John Lewis double is £38.

This said, both brands do offer a slightly different range of alternative tog options, so you might prefer one brand over the other based on your warmth requirements.

Supremely Washable 10.5 Tog Duvet

The M&S Supremely Washable Duvet is available in 1, 4.5, 7.5, 10.5 and 13.5 tog warmth options, plus an all-season duvet.

John Lewis

Synthetic Soft Touch Washable 10.5 Tog Duvet

Whereas the John Lewis Soft Touch Washable Duvet is available in a 4.5, 10.5, 13.5, or 15 tog duvets along with an all-season option.

Bed linen

When it comes to bed linen, M&S comes in more affordable again. Both brands offer a budget-friendly 180 thread count cotton duvet cover, but whereas Marks & Spencer's costs £22.50 for a double, the John Lewis version costs £30.

That said, the John Lewis ANYDAY Pure Cotton Duvet Cover does come in a wider selection of colours that feel a little more on-trend and high-end compared to the M&S shades.

Ultimately, in the battle of the bedding there's very little in it. It all comes down to a few pounds saving here and there. But, in the words of one of those supermarket bedding brands I shopped at years ago, 'every little counts'.

I saw the stunning new John Lewis x Sanderson homeware collection IRL – these are the pieces I predict with sell out fast

Today, John Lewis launches a very special collection of homeware and furniture, created in collaboration with Sanderson, a British heritage brand of wallpapers and fabrics that’s celebrating its 165th anniversary this year. And what better way to mark this special birthday than with a beautiful pattern-filled collab with John Lewis, making the company’s intricate work available and known to a wider customer base?

I already had a hands-on experience with the John Lewis x Sanderson pieces at the John Lewis spring/summer 2025 collection preview last month, mentally bookmarking some of my favourites then. But this week, I got to see the collection up close and personal again at the Sanderson HQ in London’s Chiswick which only further solidified my top picks from the offering – many of which I’m sure will be among the bestsellers that sell out first, too.

As Sanderson is well-known for its traditional prints and patterns with an archive on hand - which I was very fortunate to get a tour of - spanning the entire history of the brand, it only made sense to dip into this treasure trove of an archive when John Lewis and Sanderson decided to join forces.

I couldn't help but include the Pamir Garden motif twice in my top picks because I truly believe it's the standout pattern of the whole offering. And it looks stunning layered as demonstrated in the image below. Sanderson is known for their wallpapers so this wallpaper is bound to be a hit!

Islington Pinetum Stripe Large 3 Seater Sofa

I'd call this pick more of an honourable mention as I don't necessarily believe it will be among the biggest bestsellers given its price tag and it being a larger piece of furniture. But it was one of my favourite designs from the range, especially as striped upholstery is trending. And this one comes in four different stripe colours to choose from as well.

If you too, like most of the Ideal Home office, are a fan of the new season of The White Lotus and the much sought-after aesthetic then you are sure to love all the pieces featuring the Pamir Garden motif which appears on everything from cushions and curtains to wallpaper and even a stunning headboard.

‘We took a trip into our archive, and Pamir Garden came to the fore as a design we all loved. This became the base from which we would work. Inspired by a document in our archive titled Animal Kingdom, Pamir Garden is a fantastical design reflecting 1970s fashion for exotic patterns and global cultures. And it’s not just me that predicts the likes of the Pamir Garden Cushion will be among the bestsellers. So does Camilla Rowe, head of accessories at John Lewis, ‘We predict the Pamir Garden Cushions to be bestsellers. With tigers and animal motifs having a major moment in interiors, it taps into that trend beautifully. There’s something about its bold, evocative design that feels straight out of The White Lotus – luxurious, intriguing, and effortlessly stylish.’

Another pattern featuring heavily throughout the collection is stripes – and I’m so here for it. Since both stripe drenching and chair and sofa skirts are currently having a moment, the striped chair with the frilly valance is set to be the star of the range.

‘The valance is having a moment this season and the Etheridge Pinetum Stripe Accent Chair is set to be a standout piece. As our spring icon, it embodies the elegance of a boutique hotel chair – sophisticated, statement and designed to elevate any space,’ Camilla at John Lewis says.

Even though I wouldn’t call myself a maximalist and I’m not one to layer lots of different patterns, I can honestly say that I enjoy this collection and its eclectic motifs, from the classic stripes to the more daring Persian garden scenes. The one thing that I would note is that it's not the cheapest of collections with scatter cushion prices starting at £55 and furniture starting at £849 for a chair. But these are pieces that I can imagine becoming heirlooms, treasured for generations, given the history of both of the brands.

'Between both brands, we have over 300 years of design history. Sanderson and John Lewis originated in the 1860s, and we wanted to celebrate our similarities and embrace our differences. This collection is the result of that. With the sun shining and temperatures rising this week, everyone’s minds have turned to the outside. And if you’re lucky to have a garden at your disposal, you’re likely looking to kit it out asap. This week, garden furniture sales at John Lewis doubled compared to last week. And with some excellent designs available in the retailer’s outdoor furniture range - like the John Lewis Marcy garden chair and matching 2-seater garden sofa - I’m not surprised.

I might not have a garden of my own, but I’ve tried and tested a fair share of garden chairs and sofas, encountering both the worst and the best garden furniture along the way. I tried sitting on the striped Marcy Sling Garden Chair at the John Lewis spring/summer 2025 press preview and was so shocked (in a good way) at how comfortable, soft and fluffy the seating was. Really, I didn’t want to get up! Needless to say, this chair certainly falls into the category of the best garden furniture I’ve tried.

Then another shock came (again in a good way) when learning about the price point of this chair – a mere £149, which for a chair this comfortable and chic is a bargain!

How is the Marcy garden chair so comfortable?

Comfort, along with style are always high on the priority list when it comes to any furniture, including pieces for the garden. And yet, it’s often difficult to find the best garden chairs that would tick both of these boxes, while also being fairly affordable.

Matthew Steels, furniture and home accessories designer at John Lewis, explains how the high level of comfort has been achieved in the Marcy garden chair. ‘The Marcy armchair is designed for ultimate comfort, combining thoughtful upholstery techniques with a supportive structure to create its signature cloud-like feel.

'The seat and back cushion are sewn as one piece, with a subtle seam acting as a live hinge – allowing the cushions to fold seamlessly into the slung frame for an inviting, pillowy effect. Beneath the generous cushioning, a webbed sling provides a hammock-like support system for a perfectly balanced seat. And I’m not the only one from the Ideal Home team that’s fallen in love with this garden chair design. So has our Digital Deputy Editor, Rebecca Knight, who’s also noticed its likeness to the much more pricey Ferm Living Desert Outdoor 2-Seater Sofa, available at Nordic Nest.

'I fell hard for the striped garden chair at the John Lewis press show,’ she says. ‘It looked very similar to a striped Ferm Living outdoor sofa I'd been lusting after, but it was less than a 10th of the price. I was seriously impressed when I heard how affordable it was.

'Stripes are having a moment at the moment, but they'll always be a timeless pattern and give the range of chairs and two-seater sofas a high-end look. Plus, I can't even begin to explain how comfortable they are to sit in, think relaxing into a plump marshmallow.'

I got a first look at the new John Lewis range for spring/summer 2025 – these are the top pieces to shop now and save for later

It’s that time of the year again when I (and other journalists) have the joy and privilege of previewing the collections of homeware and furniture brands for the upcoming spring/summer season. John Lewis is always one I look forward to – and the John Lewis spring/summer 2025 range did not disappoint.

As one would expect from a spring and summer offering, the colours were cheerful and patterns plentiful. But there were also plenty of exciting new ideas and products that I can’t wait to incorporate into my own home – and see how influencers will style them in theirs. Several home decor trends like the tendency towards dark wood were also further confirmed.

Some of these goodies are already available to shop now and fast becoming bestsellers. While others are worth bookmarking for later once they drop. And just like I did with the John Lewis autumn/winter 2024 collection, I’ve put together a list of the pieces that impressed me the most this week when seeing the new range in person.

What to shop now

Furniture for indoors and outdoors

If you’re looking for your next best sofa, John Lewis is always one of the top brands I recommend to people. And the unusually shaped and beautifully curved Lozenge sofa is one of my favourites because it’s so unique (and also so comfortable).

And it’s the Lozenge sofa that is one of the biggest focuses for John Lewis this season as the existing chaise style now has a little 3-seater sister – also available in the brand’s colour of the year, pistachio green, as well as the original cream boucle, the latter of which can be yours in just seven days.

With the warmer season also comes the need for new garden furniture ideas – and again, the Lozenge sofa has been transformed into an outdoor version that’s equally as curvy and comfortable which is something I don’t take for granted, especially when it comes to outdoor furniture.

But speaking of outdoor furniture’s comfort levels, the top garden chair buy that you definitely shouldn’t be sleeping on is the brand new Marcy design in the trendy striped finish, available in three different colourways (burnt orange, green and greige) for just £149 – our Deputy Digital Editor, Rebecca Knight was so impressed with the look, the price and the cloud-like, cushiony comfort that she’s considering buying one (or two) for her new garden.

New brand partnerships

Starting this year, John Lewis is set to make several of my favourite brands more accessible by stocking their products, reinforcing the idea that the retailer is a one-stop shop for all your needs. After all, that’s why we all love John Lewis.

Both Ottolenghi’s serveware in collab with Serax and Jamie Oliver’s new tableware range called Big Love are two of the newly stocked brands – and it’s already selling like hot cakes. I myself have the pink oval scalloped platter from Jamie Oliver and it’s perfect for serving anything that’s long and narrow, in other words of an awkward shape like a banana bread or a strudel, and it makes everything you put on it look special.

Another newcomer is Henry Holland's partnership with Harlequin with his high-end style, patterned wallpapers and soft furnishings like the cushion below. So stylish! I’m already obsessed with the designer’s tableware so having an easy access to more of his range is highly appreciated.

And the John Lewis stores are the perfect place to see the MADE range in person, including the brand's stylish lighting like the asymmetrical rattan table lamp below.

John Lewis is really good at making home accessories that instantly elevate the look of a room, whether that’s a lovely lamp, a cushion or a vase.

The bestselling striped stoneware vase from last season’s collection is being championed again for spring/summer, available in several different colourways and two various sizes too.

The abundance of stylish rugs covering most of the flooring (including the kitchen) was inspiring – also making it difficult to pick just one from all of them. But the jute chequerboard design in the on-trend chocolate brown shade in the dining room set-up stood out to me the most.

The brand’s expertise in home textiles also doesn’t stop at rugs – beautiful made-to-measure curtains were also a highlight as were quilted bedspreads like this patchwork design which is perfect for adding a bit of colour and pattern even to the plainest of bedding. And according to John Lewis, the patterned quilts are consistently among the most popular with its customer base.

What to save for later

You may have noticed (or not) that I haven’t mentioned much about the lighting offering, especially since John Lewis has positioned itself as one of the best go-to lighting brands on the high street in the last couple of years. But that’s largely because the best of the lighting (in my opinion) from this collection is yet to come.

Firstly, keep an eye out for the scalloped rattan table lamp (pictured above) which both John Lewis and I expect to be one of the most popular designs as the scalloped trend continues to thrive.

And I’ve saved the best till last - mainly because this collection is shrouded in much secrecy - but this season, John Lewis is collaborating with heritage fabric and wallpaper brand Sanderson on a 200-product range launching on the 20th March. The offering is covered in Sanderson’s beautiful archival patterns and spans everything from furniture to wallpaper and more stylish lighting with prices starting from £15. I can hardly wait for this collection to drop in a month’s time and get my hands on some of those showstopping goodies!

John Lewis is selling a made-to-order Icelandic Eiderdown Winter Weight Duvet and it costs over £12,000.

How much would you spend on a duvet? Ensuring you get the best night sleep, it’s always worth investing in one of the best duvets you can afford. But the Ultimate Collection Made to Order Icelandic Eiderdown Winter Weight Duvet from John Lewis has floored us with its price tag. Its smallest size, a single, will set you back £4,935, while its largest size, emperor, costs £12,460.00.

For John Lewis - a brand famed for its affordability and never knowingly undersold pledge - it’s an expensive choice - which is largely what makes the Icelandic Eiderdown Winter Weight Duvet so intriguing.

But what makes this duvet so special?

If there's one item I'm always bound to have to hand, so to speak, it's a fan, and my latest hyper focus has been on finding the best one for keeping me cool at work. Enter – the Amazon desk fan vs John Lewis handheld fan debate.

While both the best portable air conditioners and the best fans are the more common and, let's be frank, effective ways of staying cool, calm and collected in a heatwave, not everyone has the space or budget to invest. Even if you do have a good standing fan, chances are it's in your bedroom like mine is, and you simply don't want to have to lug it from room to room.

For the past few years I've sworn by a nifty John Lewis number, in fact most of the Ideal Home team own at least one, but this summer I wanted to ensure I wasn't missing out on any better options, so after a browse online I settled on a slimline desk fan from Amazon. Here's how the two personal cooling methods stack up against one another...

The Anyday Handheld fan is something of a modern John Lewis icon, you're more likely than not to see a few in use when on any form of public transport during the warmer months.

The model is a USB-rechargeable device that you can then use wirelessly. it's designed so you can (as the name suggests) hold it in your hands when you're on the go, or use the fold-out stand incorporated in the handle so you can set it on a table.

When it use you can choose between 3 speed settings depending on how much power you need to get cool, but it is surprisingly quiet. In heatwaves I've been known to prop one up next to me in bed to get cool air right at my face as I wind down – for this reason, the fan is a must-pack for holidays in warmer countries.

It's very light, so easy to take around with you, plus the range of colours mean you can pick one to suit your style. I own two which I alternate depending on the occasion (or my outfit) - a white, and a turquoise one from a former collection, and the colourways do vary year to year. Left in stock currently you have the option of white, sage green and sunshine yellow.

Usually at £12, the fan is clearly a bargain, but it's currently at 30% off, making it just £8.40. I'm not the only fan or the fan, either, as it boasts 4.9 out of 5 stars from 1,650 reviews.

'Superb piece of kit,' writes one reviewer. 'Easily fits into a travel bag. Hand held or self standing makes it most effective for such a sturdy and well priced product. Loved it so much I bought another for the future!'

'This is the best hand held fan I have purchased in along time, ideal for hot weather and cooling hot flushes, this was a good buy at a very good price,' echoed another happy customer.

As much as I love my John Lewis option, I recently went on a mission to ensure it was still the best one for me. The alternative I eventually plumped for was a USB powered desk fan from Amazon.

While also using a USB for its power, this model runs off this energy, so it must remain connected to work. This means that you can't use it on the go, but it's ideal for using at your desk, bedside table or make-up table if you, too, get frustrated with trying to apply make-up with a hot face.

Like the John Lewis, this fan has 3 speeds, and the design means you can tilt it in any degree you like, rather than the prescribed options of the handheld one. It's equally light and slimline so while, again, you couldn't use it on the go, it is very easy to transport.

While it does advertise itself as silent, no fan truly is, however it is quieter than the John Lewis one, and one of the quietest fans I've tested.

There's a range of five colourways, the apricot which I have (in reality closer to a soft cream), black, dark green with orange accents, grey and pink. As with many Amazon buys, prices vary based on colour, so they range from £8.99 to £10.99 depending on which you choose.

The overall rating, while not at the heights of the John Lewis fan, is very good, at 4.3 stars from 1,788 ratings. 'This fan is perfect for on your desk and works great! Small, compact and powerful! USB powered, very quiet with various settings too. Can change direction easily too. Would recommend,' said one reviewer.

'My colleagues all asked where I got it and took pictures of it to try buy their own ones,' added another.

Final thoughts

Overall, if you were only able to buy one then I'd advise the John Lewis. This is thanks to its wireless use and the fact I've been using the same one for over three years with no problems. The Amazon option is a more recent purchase so I cant really speak to its longevity just yet.

However, if you are looking for a desk-specific fan, it's worth bearing in mind that the Amazon fan is my preferred for that use, so I will be using both in different ways going forward.

Last week, John Lewis took over one of the beautiful, historical buildings in central London and turned it into a homeware haven, showcasing the brand’s latest home range that will be launching this autumn. And I was one of the lucky few to get an exclusive first look at the new John Lewis autumn/winter 2024 collection.

This showcase gave the attendees a first glimpse of new (and returning) home decor trends and what our homes might look like this coming autumn and winter. Similarly to my first look of the John Lewis spring/summer 2024 collection, I had some favourites that I think will do particularly well. And I would love to share them with you.

The John Lewis buys to bookmark now before they drop

There are plenty of pieces to get excited about ahead of the autumn/winter season, from new additions to the John Lewis furniture range to on-trend patterns and motifs.

Modular sofa

I love a modular sofa as it’s one of the best sofa ideas for a small living room – and yes, I currently have a pretty small and narrow living room. Modular sofas are versatile, flexible and also more often than not super stylish. And that goes for this new modular sofa style from John Lewis that I spotted at the preview. And perhaps unsurprisingly enough, it was one of the design team’s top picks.

The sofa is super comfortable and cosy with its boucle finish. And the lines on the backrest make it that little bit more interesting.

The sofas at the preview also caught our Editor in Chief Heather Young's eye but from a colour angle, rather than design. In fact she's predicting that the caramel shade showcased at John Lewis's preview will be the hottest new sofa colour trend.

Curved coffee table

Furniture with curved edges and irregular shapes inspired by natural forms and biophilic design are clearly still going to be very much in come this autumn as John Lewis just debuted the coffee table of dreams. The curved design comes with a wooden base with wide legs and a stone table top resembling beige marble. I want it so bad as it’s the perfect narrow living room idea given it’s rather slim but long shape.

Thick, deckchair stripes are having a moment right now. And that moment is going to keep going well into this autumn and winter. John Lewis made sure of it with its show-stopping stripy display of lampshades and a coordinating sofa. Armchairs were also available.

But while the larger furniture pieces in bright stripes might be a bit too maximalist for my liking (I am a minimalist after all), the very pretty lampshades, reminiscent of the popular M&S striped lamps, I can get behind.

The new seating options in boucle did not stop at the modular sofa, oh no. I was struck by the designer look of this chunky-looking boucle armchair (which is super comfy and cosy, might I add). And what I loved even more is that there is a coordinating footstool available, too. So damn cute yet super stylish.

John Lewis has combined two of summer's biggest trends into one garden bench – fans are calling it ‘stunning’

As we’re edging closer and closer to summer, weekends spent relaxing in the garden start to seem more realistic with each day. Except for the rainy ones, of course. And John Lewis is getting us and its Instagram followers excited for the warm months ahead with the release of its new squiggle garden bench.

John Lewis never disappoints when it comes to home and garden decor. And now the popular retailer is releasing a new addition to our best garden bench wish list called the Squiggle 2-Seater Garden Bench. John Lewis squiggle garden bench

This week, John Lewis announced the launch of the squiggle garden bench on Instagram. And fans fell in love with the design straight away, calling it ‘stunning’ and ‘gorgeous’ in the comments section. It’s easy to see why, of course.

Tthe design is already selling like hot cakes, despite its recent release. So if you like the weather-resistant FSC-certified acacia wood finish, the scalloped and slatted back and the striped seat cushion it comes with, then better be quick before they’re all gone.

'Portable lighting is a huge trend for spring and we've introduced more new designs after the sellout success of our iconic Mushroom lamp. These rechargeable lights are so simple to use and can move around the house with you. They are brilliant to use on dining tables when entertaining friends and family to create a 'restaurant' style,' says Camilla.

You heard that right, dining room lighting has gotten a huge makeover by going wire-free. Following the success of other favourites of ours, including Dunelm's wireless mushroom lamp, we suspect the reign of portable lighting won't be dimming down anytime soon.

Flatpack furniture is about to get a major overhaul if the new John Lewis launch has anything to do with it. The new Easy Klix self-assembly furniture range waves goodbye to complicated instructions, and says it can be put together with a click.

Most of us are working with a tight budget when decorating our homes, often flatpack furniture is the only way to go. Even many of the best sofas now come in a box that you can put together.

However, for most flatpacks, the tricky instructions, fiddly screws and painful twisting of the Allen key can be enough to put you off updating your home.

Brands such as IKEA have tried to make this process easier by partnering with companies such as Task Rabbit to help shoppers assemble furniture when they get home. However, John Lewis has gone a step further by launching the EasyKlix range which is put together with only a very few simple tools, and most of the elements can be connected with a click.

In fact, John Lewis claims that the pieces can be assembled 10 times quicker than a traditional self-assembly method, which we must admit sounds fantastic!

The innovation at the heart of the range is the 'Threespine click furniture technology'. It means you can easily click furniture together and also unclick it to disassemble it. Yes, renters you heard that right, it's made to be easily disassembled and reassembled multiple times without damaging it.

As a renter in London myself, on what feels like a never-ending cycle of 12-month contracts, I have to be ready to move. So the idea of investing in a piece of furniture that can easily be packed away and travel with me is music to my ears, at last a renter-friendly furniture idea!

The range is split into two ranges the Sherbrook which is sleek and modern, perfect for modern living room ideas, and the Harllson which is a touch more fun with a mid-century feel. The range includes 19 pieces, that are all simple staple pieces of furniture including wardrobes, drawers, bedside tables and coffee tables.

Don't expect a bold and flashy design, these pieces simply feel elegant and neutral, perfect for adapting to any interior style. I'm currently eyeing up the Easy Klix Sherbrooke small sideboard with its elegant recessed handles and tapered legs, priced at £279.

The prices for the range start at £139 for a bedside table which might sound a bit steep compared to other flatpack furniture brands. However, these are solid wood, there's no particle board here and the theory is that they are built to last, to travel (easily) from house to house with you.

Most of the John Lewis Home collection for spring/summer 2024 has now landed on the site and in stores, except for a few pieces. To mark the beginning of a new season and a new aesthetic, John Lewis held a preview event and I got a first look at some of the best new-in pieces.

The new range champions some of the biggest home decor trends predicted for 2024, including the scalloped home furnishing trend which we’ve been seeing everywhere lately and which is bound to stick around for the rest of the year.

The collection is also a celebration of the retailer’s colour of the season, named sky blue – a perfect soft, calming blue shade. When looking at the forecasted colour palette of 2024, we’re not surprised – as blue is all the rage. So naturally, most of my top picks from the offering (which I’m certain will be selling like hotcakes) come in this pretty blue hue, because we're predicting everyone and their dog will soon be obsessed with it.

John Lewis really honed in on the scalloping trend with this collection and I'm obsessed with this linen cushion with a contrasting scalloped trim. And I'm clearly not the only one as three of the five available colourways are currently sold out. Cross your fingers for a restock.

Both wireless and mushroom lamps are currently having a moment - and so is this dimmable design from John Lewis. Available in an array of colours including the championed sky blue, I'm particularly fond of this damson shade, which was actually the brand's colour of the season for winter. It's also offered in a larger size for £85 but I love this petite version.

John Lewis ANYDAY Hem 3 Drawer Chest

This chest of drawers is hitting two trends in one go with its scalloped edge and light blue colour. Blue furniture is on the rise as we've recently seen with IKEA's blue HEMNES chest of drawers. And this design is already sold out in the pink colourway. I bet the blue one is soon to follow suit.

John Lewis Confetti Coloured Glass Highball, 400ml

Speckled and confetti-coloured glassware has been a popular look for the last couple of years, evoking both a playful look and a resemblance to the luxurious Murano glass. The problem is that they tend to be on the pricier side. But with the reasonable £8 price tag, we expect these to fly off the shelves.

John Lewis Scalloped Edge Hexagonal Tray

Scalloped trays are a very popular home accessory at the moment and this lacquered blue design has a very luxurious look about it, similar to high-end designer styles. Not yet available on the site, the tray should drop soon and we recommend setting an email notification for this one if you like it.

Also available in the trending sky blue colour, I actually prefer this flower-shaped, scallop-trimmed bowl in the off-white shade due to its neutral nature that goes with everything. Currently sitting in 11 baskets, this is the perfect way to serve your breakfast this spring.

The brand’s focus on all things sleep this season (and by extension the bedroom and bed) makes the powder blue the perfect choice for interiors as it is mentally soothing and restorative.

The highly-anticipated John Lewis Christmas advert is here! This can only mean one thing: it's finally socially acceptable to start brainstorming our Christmas ideas.

We don't think there's quite a rite of passage to welcome Christmas that even comes close to when the seasonal adverts begin gracing our screens, and the John Lewis Christmas advert is one that has long become a staple in our Christmas countdown. Let's face it, has the festive season even begun if the John Lewis Christmas advert hasn't aired yet?

This year's seasonal advert 'Snapper, the Perfect Tree' features a character that we're particularly excited to welcome into our homes this winter, Snapper, the (very loveable) Venus flytrap. He's not like your typical Christmas tree by any means – in fact, we think he might be even sweeter.

This year's John Lewis Christmas advert focuses on celebrating classic and changing Christmas traditions and the joy we find in sharing them together. The advert begins with a little boy who comes across a box labelled 'Grow your own perfect Christmas tree' while sifting through items at a vintage market.

The boy takes the seed home and lovingly nurtures it, wholeheartedly believing he is cultivating a perfect Christmas tree. However, things go slightly awry when the fast-growing plant – an energetic and mischievous Venus flytrap named Snapper – becomes a life force of its own and is cast out into the cold, replaced by a more traditional artificial Christmas tree.

But of course, it's never all doom and gloom in John Lewis' Christmas adverts. Come Christmas day, Snapper is embraced back into the family's life, giving out presents with such exuberance that the family find a new joy in gathering around their, albeit unconventional, 'Christmas tree'.

The advert was truly a tear-jerker and a mood-lifter all in one, but we wouldn't have had it any other way.

The John Lewis Christmas advert 2023 is the first by Saatchi and Saatchi, showing how the unusual and unexpected, over the conventionally 'perfect', can lead to a joyful time together for everyone.

And don't even get us started on the incredible original soundtrack sung by legendary tenor, Andrea Bocelli. A proportion of the proceeds from the charity single 'Festa' (which means 'celebration') will go to John Lewis Partnership's Building Happier Future charities to help care for experienced young people and families in need.

We spotted Aldi's Paper Snowman at their Christmas Showcase a couple of weeks ago, and admittedly, it was love at first sight. Amongst all the Christmas ideas on display at the event, I couldn't help but keep finding myself back to admire the paper snowman.

This year, John Lewis’ Christmas offering is in many ways far from traditional. Even though the essentials are still there, the retailer hasn’t shied away from choices that are quite out there - be it an air fryer Christmas decoration or a John Lewis copper Christmas tree.

That’s right, John Lewis is going rogue and somewhat autumnal with its latest artificial Christmas tree release, which we got a peak of when the John Lewis Christmas shop was first launched last month. With the online Christmas shop opening, the store also announced its six decorative themes, many of which skewed away from tradition, including the John Lewis Christmas Cottage Unlit Christmas Tree.

Surprisingly enough, this glamorous design that glistens in the light comes cheaper than some of its greener counterparts. Priced at £229, the tree stands 7 feet tall, same as most of the other trees in John Lewis’ collection, and it comes with its own black metal stand.

We're very into this rusty colour that’s giving autumnal vibes. It makes the decorations pop even more, especially those coloured in red, blue, purple or green, John Lewis says, and we agree.

Some pieces from the Christmas Cottage theme, like the 12 plates of Christmas inspired by the brand's archives, are steeped in tradition. However, the metallic copper tree at the heart of the collection is a big break from tradition.

It takes autumn and cottage interiors as its colour reference point for the new Christmas tree idea, and we're seriously into this cosy Christmas tree trend. If we're being honest living in the UK, the chances of a white Christmas a small, making cooper and rust coloured decorations far more in keeping with the trees and fauna outside our windows.

We're also a little smitten by the accompanying mantle-piece idea that is adorned in rustic toadstools, jumping on the mushroom trend we've seen growing this year.

We are excited to introduce the copper and blue trees this year which create a wow moment in the home.'

We've seen other coloured trees from pink at Cox & Cox to multi-coloured at George Home at Asda, springing up over the last few years and it looks like the coloured tree trend is only growing.

John Lewis revealed in its annual How We Shop, Live and Look' reportwhat we're all been eyeing up and shopping over the last 12 months at the popular department store. This year, there's been one stand-out choice in the home decor category, and no, it's not embracing the 'grandmillennial' trend, or the colour drenching trend...

The super-sized interior trend

John Lewis' annual report reveals the intriguing news that their customers have had a wide range of varied homeware interests over the last year; from multiple-tog duvets, to rechargeable lamps and fans (presumably, we're all sick of trying to find a plug for our electrical appliances).

But the one trend that really caught our eye, is the recent fascination that John Lewis have seen in their shoppers for 'super-sized' interiors, rather than smaller, micro pieces of furniture.

According to the report, purchases of oversized, statement rugs have shot up by a whopping 61% in the last year, with customers opting to cover most of their living space with a rug instead of a smaller area of floor space.

The report also reveals that super-king mattresses have become a much bigger seller at John Lewis than ever before, with the brand revealing that sales of their super-king mattresses have climbed 32% in the last 10 years.

And that's not all – the high street department store also shared that supersized sofas have taken over in the last year, reporting that sales of sofas with five or more seats rose by 36% in the last 12 months – suggesting that, post-pandemic, we're all doing a lot more socialising at home.

In fact, they revealed that their enormous 'lozenge' sofas have been a bestseller this past year, and we're not surprised, given how much space there is to lounge on them!

While John Lewis' report arguably doesn't give us the entire picture of British consumer habits over the last 12 months, given that they are one of the most popular homeware retailers in the country, we can assume that it's a pretty good indication of where our general interests lie, in terms of interiors.

And if you're keen to emulate the 'over-sized' trend in your home, you'd be taking on a pretty stylish design option.

Oversized interiors, be it a rug, sofa, or even an oversized headboard, can create a really special point of interest in a room, drawing the eye to a statement piece. And, contrary to popular belief a large sofa or a large rug can make a small living room feel larger.

Did we just find a £25 dupe for an iconic designer lamp? We think we did

It’s needless to say that we’re pretty lamp-obsessed at the minute in the Ideal Home office. But can you blame us with all these lovely table lamps on the market and new ones coming out pretty much daily? And yet, another one has come to our attention, that’s also a dupe for a designer classic on top of that. It’s the John Lewis Tony desk lamp.

Not only that it might be one of the best desk lamps in its own right, the Tony lamp is the perfect dupe for the iconic Anglepoise Type 75 desk lamp that’s also sold through John Lewis. But while the former sells for perfectly acceptable £25, the latter goes for £219 a pop. Or £189 for the Mini version, which in all fairness is closer in size to the Tony lamp.

The steel desk lamp is designed to a sleek and petite silhouette fitted with an adjustable head. It comes in a wide range of colours with different finishes, which we love.

Anglepoise Type 75 Desk Lamp

The result of decades of desk lamp design has lead to the Type 75 best-selling style by Anglepoise. It's so iconic that it's been the subject of several designer collaborations. The ergonomic functionality that makes it endlessly adjustable is what this one has on its budget-friendly dupe.

Our current lamp-happy attitude has already succumbed to the likes of the Dunelm Keko wireless lamp and the M&S Kirsten table lamp. And now we find ourselves falling victim to the Tony lamp. Part of the department store’s budget-friendly ANYDAY range, the steel task lamp is the ideal addition to any home office with its adjustable head and petite, space-saving design, ideal for small home office ideas.

The Pixar-worthy, best-selling Type 75 task lamp by Anglepoise is the result of 80 years refining what a task lamp should be and look like, with a design inspired by vintage desk lamp styles. And it has a couple of things on its dupe.

One is its size. The Type 25 is larger, towering over the 36cm-high Tony lamp at 53cm. But that might be a downside for you if you’re struggling for space. The other thing is its ergonomic functionality taken to the extreme. While the Tony lamp features an adjustable head, the Type 75 comes with adjustable everything.

Ideal Home’s Digital Deputy Editor, Rebecca Knight, has already bagged the wireless Amazon table lamp this season. Now, she’s eyeing up the mustard colourway of the Tony lamp that she was the first one to spot. ‘I think that a good desk lamp is a must and this one ticks all the boxes. What caught my eye about this design first and foremost was the cheerful mustard colour that it comes in. And its entire colour range might even be better than the original Anglepoise desk lamp that it’s a dupe for.’

Indeed, the cheerful colourways in various finishes (gloss, matte, metallic, you name it) like the aforementioned mustard, as well as lichen and sleek metallic gold tone and copper of the Tony lamp contrast the industrial colours of the Type 75 such as black, white and silver.

As of today, John Lewis & Partners have opened their Christmas departments in stores across the country. While it may only be September, now is the time to get a shift on if you have specific Christmas ideas in mind. Because, like it or not, the hero products sell out long before December rolls around.

The department store reported that searches for ‘Christmas gifts’ doubled this August compared to the same time last year, while searches for ‘tree decorations’ had risen by 33% and 'Christmas wrapping paper' was up a whopping 466% year on year. If there's one thing we can take from this, it's that people are raring to go and will have their eyes on the prize...

If you live near one of the stores, it's well worth popping in. Our Assistant Editor Thea Babington-Stitt went to the launch of the Christmas shop in their Oxford Street flagship and was bowled over by the festive feels.

'John Lewis has really gone to town this year, ' she said. 'Ceilings draped in garlands of purple baubles layer over the gorgeous Christmas themes below, and there truly is something for everyone.'

'If you've got a minimalist vibe, then Polar Planet's Nordic aesthetic is for you, while Royal Fairytale is perfect for gilt and opulence. It's practically impossible for me to pick a favourite, but Rainbow Time Capsule is packed full of nostalgia, from pink flip phone baubles to retro fairy light parcel trim.'

It's not just decs on offer either. There will be a mix of pop-ups appearing at stores across the country, showing Hendrick's Gin, Fever Tree and Kocktail. And, of course, the Quality Street pick'n'mix returns at 18 locations. This year, they're brought back Coffee Creme after two decades of retiremnt – it was the most requested discontonued chocolate, don'tcha know.

'I cracked out the fan for the first time this weekend and I was amazed at how quiet and powerful it was. I took it to a garden party and struggled to keep hold of it as everyone kept asking to borrow it and wanted to know where they could buy one too.'

The handheld fan is surprisingly powerful for its compact size and quiet too. It's also rechargeable with 3-speed settings, with its handle cleverly incorporating a fold-out stand so it can be propped up anywhere. This year it is available in green, orange, navy blue and white.
