I don’t know about you, but lugging heavy loads of washing around the house always feels like a trip hazard - especially when you can see over the mountain of clothes in front of you.

It might be a tad chilly outside, but the minute we get a brighter spring day, I'm straight out to the washing line. After months of drying clothes over radiators and airers, even a cold-but-crisp afternoon is a great moment to get laundry outside.

But while I'm always keen to get the air around my laundry, save money on the running costs of my heated clothes airer and dry my washing fast without my tumble dryer, I've noticed that there's one small mistake that could be ruining my clothes, and probably yours too.

You might have noticed that if you peg your clothes in the wrong place, the pegs can create marks, stretch seams, make grubby marks and leave faded patches. Those little shoulder horns or shiny dents where the peg was holding the clothing tight are really annoying, so I wanted to see if there are any ways to avoid this from happening.

So I asked the experts why it happens and what you can do differently so your clothes remain unscathed.

Why peg marks are more damaging than you think

While wooden and plastic pegs are brilliant for keeping laundry secure, especially in the UK, where a sudden gust of wind can send your clothes flying.

'While a laundry staple, clothes pegs can sometimes leave pressure marks or small creases on clothing, especially when they are clipped too tightly or left on the line for too long,' explains Lauren Roelofs, Laundry Expert at Brabantia. 'This can be particularly frustrating when you want to wear something straight from the line.'

And because they grip tightly in one spot, there's a lot of pressure on a concentrated section of fabric, which can lead to permanent creases or dents, shiny marks, stretched shoulders and necklines (my personal pet peeve) and fading.

However, Laura Marsden, Vileda's laundry expert, says they are one of the easiest problems to fix. 'Making some small tweaks to your routine can unlock better results,' she adds.

The experts have shared the various ways you can minimise these annoying peg marks and fix the problem too.

How to avoid peg marks on clothing

1. Dry clothes inside out

One of the easiest ways to prevent peg marks is to turn garments inside out before hanging them, explains Laura.

'This not only reduces visible marks, but also helps prevent fading from sun exposure, which is particularly important for darker colours.'

2. Use hangers for shirts and delicate items

For shirts, blouses and anything more delicate, experts recommend hanging them on a hanger instead of pegging them up to avoid both peg marks and crease lines forming along the fold.

'For delicate fabrics, skip the pegs altogether,' explains Laura. 'Hanging items on clothes hangers prevents peg marks and helps garments to hold their shape.'

She recommends using a rotary dryer with hanger hooks to stop the hanger from slipping off the line. 'A great option is the Vileda Sun-Lift Rotary Dryer, £75 from Argos,' suggests Laura.

It features special hooks for hangers, to give additional drying space, but also offers 40 metres of line space (holding up to 3 wash loads). 'Plus, the patented line tensioning system allows you to keep lines perfectly tight,' she adds.

3. Hang items by their hems or seams

Lauren advises hanging garments from stronger seams, hems, or waistbands where possible, to avoid marks. 'Hanging at these points helps ensure any indentations are less noticeable than if pegs are placed across the chest or shoulders,' she explains.

Any tiny peg impression is far less noticeable at the bottom edge, and hanging tops this way, for example, will help them dry more smoothly.

Lauren adds that if you're drying t-shirts, you should turn them upside down to avoid shoulder bumps, and peg trousers by the waistband.

And Laura agrees, 'to minimise both creases and peg marks, fold trousers and jeans over the clothes line at the waistband.'

And if it's windy, you can secure them, peg at the hems instead. 'Any marks are far less noticeable at the bottom of the leg,' she explains.

4. Drape jumpers and dresses over the line

Heavier garments like knitwear and dresses are better draped over the line rather than clipped. Folding them over spreads the weight evenly and prevents the fabric from stretching under a single peg point, explains Laura.

'Fold the dress in half lengthwise and drape it over the line,' she suggests.

And the same goes for jumpers. 'Never hang sweaters by the shoulders, as this can cause stretching and misshaping. Instead, fold the sweater lengthwise and drape it evenly over the line. This distributes weight and reduces pressure from pegs.'

5. Use soft grip pegs to minimise marks

If you do need to peg garments directly to the line, switching to soft-grip or padded pegs can help reduce pressure on fabrics.

Heather Nixon, NPD and regulatory manager at eco-friendly cleaning brand Bio-D, says, 'There are also clothes pegs that have been created specifically to reduce marking - look for options with soft grips.'

These wider clips distribute the grip more evenly, which lowers the chance of dents, shiny patches or deep creases forming.

A good option is Brabantia's smart grips, £8.58 at Amazon or Minky Sure Grip Pegs, £6.39 at Amazon, which Minky's Laundry Accessories Product Manager, Olivia Coulthard, says have been specially designed with 'a unique soft grip pad that holds laundry securely in place on the line without leaving marks or damaging clothes.'

6. Use a drying rack outside instead of pegging clothes

Another expert trick is using a portable drying rack outside rather than attaching everything to the washing line.

This lets you lay delicate items flat or drape them gently over rails, avoiding the need for pegs altogether, while still benefiting from fresh air and the breeze.

'Some drying racks have a drying platform (flat-dry areas) to dry your delicate pieces,' says Lauren. Brabantia's Hangon drying rack is compact yet features flat-dry areas, RRP £70, at Amazon.

Olivia adds that if you have delicate items like socks and smalls, the Minky No Peg Airer, £11.99 at Amazon 'has twisted lines that grip items and keep them in place whilst drying either indoors or outdoors, making peg imprints a thing of the past!’

How to get rid of peg marks on clothes

If you've already taken laundry off the line and spotted those peg dents, don't panic, as they can usually be fixed.

'If peg marks do appear, they can be easily removed with a quick iron or steaming,' suggests Lauren.

'If you don’t want to set up an ironing board, opt for a handheld steamer, and a steam board instead, like Brabantia's foldable steam board, £35.95 at Amazon. It’s a convenient way to refresh and smooth out your clothes with minimal effort.'

For lighter marks, you try spritzing the fabric with water, advises Heather, before ironing. Alternatively, smooth it with your hands before letting the item air dry.

Heather also recommends an ice cube to soften and release the fibres.

So there you have it! Making these small tweaks to how you hang your laundry can help your clothes keep their shape and last much longer.

However, do have a look at the laundry items you should never dry on a washing line before you set up your outdoor drying setup this year.

Laundry experts have issued a 30-minute rule to ensure your washing remains fresh and clean-smelling throughout winter, avoiding damp and mould in the process.

There’s nothing worse than doing a load of washing, only for it to end up smelling damp and musty at the end. While the best heated airers can help dry washing quickly in winter, without the use of an energy-guzzling tumble dryer, there are still precautions we must take to eliminate that horrible, musty scent.

This is where the 30-minute laundry rule comes into play. Removing clothes from your washing machine within 30 minutes of the cycle finishing is one of the easiest (and cheapest) ways to prevent your clothes from smelling musty. Here’s why.

What is the 30-minute laundry rule?

Drying laundry in winter is never an enjoyable task. While there are some instances where you can dry your clothes outside in winter, for the most part, we rely on airers and the best dehumidifiers to help dry our clothes fast. But if you’re finding your clothes don’t exactly smell fresh, you are likely leaving them in your washing machine for too long.

‘If your laundry smells musty after washing, it’s likely due to moisture being trapped rather than the clothes not being cleaned properly. Once a cycle finishes, the drum is still warm and damp, which creates an ideal environment for bacteria to develop if washing is left sitting inside,’ says Gwil Snook, Laundry Appliance Expert at AO.com.

‘Removing clothes within 30 minutes (or even sooner) is a good habit to get into, as it helps prevent that stale odour from forming. Leaving damp laundry in the machine for several hours can undo lots of the freshness you’ve just achieved with detergent and fabric softener, meaning you may need to rewash the load.’

Plus, leaving your washing in the machine for an extended period of time can also mean extra work when the time comes to whip your best iron out.

‘Leaving clothes in the drum after the cycle has finished can also cause them to crease and may require more ironing. If you have an integrated washer dryer, it’s worth switching the settings for this reason too,’ says Michael Forbes, lead product trainer at AEG.

If you are particularly worried about bad smells, bicarbonate of soda can also be used to neutralise odours.

‘Bicarbonate of soda can help neutralise odours, but it works best when used correctly. Adding a small amount alongside detergent during the wash can help tackle smells, particularly in hard-water areas, so it's worth checking if you live in one. But sprinkling it onto already damp clothes won’t fix laundry that has been left too long – in that case, a proper rewash is the better avenue to go down,’ says Gwil.

Make your laundry smell fresh all year round

It’s good to get into the habit of removing clothes from a washing machine as soon as the cycle has finished. This way, you can enjoy fresh-smelling laundry all year round.

I’m not sure if you’ve noticed, but it’s a bit wet outside, and the constant rain makes drying bedding a nightmare - especially if you don’t have a tumble dryer. But as Stacey Solomon is the queen of finding gadgets we didn’t know we needed, I shouldn’t be surprised that she’s found the perfect solution: a spiral sheet hanger (£20.88 at Amazon).

Now, I’ve tried multiple ways to dry bedding indoors in winter, and most of the time I’m a sling-it-over-a-door-frame-and-hope-for-the-best kind of girl, as I don’t have a huge amount of space in my tiny home to do much else. But there’s no denying that Stacey’s new discovery has me intrigued.

Of course, the cynical part of me also wonders whether it’s a gimmick. So, I’d love to know what you think. But for just £20, I’m not sure I really care if it’s a gimmick or not.

Plus, Stacey seems to love it, and I’m certainly interested in trying it out for myself. But it’s worth noting that those who want to use it as a permanent fixture will need to drill a hook into their ceilings - and you can use these 16PCS Metal Ceiling Hooks (£3.95 at Amazon) to do that.

If you’re a renter or just a bit sceptical as to whether a spiral sheet hanger will form part of your permanent laundry routine, I have found these Self-Adhesive Heavy-Duty Large Hooks for Hanging (£13.99 at Amazon) that will simply stick to your ceiling - no drilling required - for a more temporary solution.

But whatever option you choose, a major perk of this spiral sheet hanger is that it can also be hooked onto your outdoor washing line in the summer or even in the winter when the temperatures allow - and it stops raining. So, you can free up more space to dry other items and dry multiple loads on one line.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t ask you to heed some warnings, though. That’s because drying laundry indoors can lead to mould, and adding more moisture to an already-damp home caused by the cold and wet weather is a recipe for disaster. One of the best dehumidifiers can help with this, though.

Simply pop one of these bad boys next to your spiral sheet hanger, and you can speed up the drying process while also keeping damp and mould at bay. Just make sure you choose one with a ‘Laundry’ mode, and I’ve popped my favourites below.

Of course, if Stacey's latest find doesn't quite suit your laundry needs, it could be worth trying out one of the best heated airers instead.

If you're still struggling to catch up on the backlog of Christmas washing, then you need to get down to Aldi this weekend. Aldi has bought back its sellout heated airers and is also selling a dehumidifier, which will dry clothes in record time, despite the freezing temperatures outside.

A combination of the best heated clothes airer and the best dehumidifier can halve clothes drying times; however, most tiered heated clothes airers and good-sized dehumidifiers will easily cost over £100 each. That is where Aldi comes in. You can pick up the upright heated airer for £69.99 and the midi dehumidifier for £89.99, in-store from 11th January.

Aldi heated clothes airer

Aldi's upright heated airer sells out most winters when it's back in stock. While they are also selling a winged heated airer for £34.99, I think the upright heated airer is the best deal, despite it being more expensive.

You can find winged heated airers at Robert Dyas and Amazon for under £30, but with the upright heated airer, Aldi is the cheapest I've come across. The only exception I've found so far is at Argos, where the Argos Home 3-tier heated airer is on sale for £69.99, reduced from £105.

But it isn't just the deal aspect; I also personally find the upright, tiered heated airers more practical. The winged heated airers take up alot of space for the amount they dry. In contrast, the Aldi upright heated airer uses three tiers to dry more clothes with a smaller footprint.

If you do invest in one of the heated airers, my top tip would be to buy a cover to go over it to speed up drying times further. You can pick one up at Dunelm for £16 that will cover a 3-tier heated airer, but check the dimensions first.

Aldi dehumidifier

In the debate over whether a dehumidifier or a heated airer is best for drying clothes, the overall consensus is that they work best as a team because the dehumidifier sucks the moisture out of the air, which in turn helps to speed up drying time.

We haven't tested the Aldi dehumidifier, but from the specs, it looks to be a great value buy for the size at less than £90. Especially if you're on a budget and want to dry clothes faster and battle condensation at home.

The Aldi Midi dehumidifier is £60 cheaper than the best value dehumidifier we've tested at Ideal Home, the Dryzone Dehumidifier, which is £149 at Amazon. Both dehumidifiers have a similar extraction rate and water tank capacity. However, the Dryzone has a dedicated laundry drying mode and doubles as an air purifier, two features the Aldi version doesn't have.

Both the heated airer and dehumidifier are only available to purchase in-store; however, if you can't get in-store, here are a couple of other smart budget buys that will dry clothes faster.

Alternatives to speed up drying clothess

Don't forget to mark 11th January in your diary if you want to snap up Aldi's bargain heated airer and dehumidifier.

When we were thinking of remodelling our utility room, I was determined that it wouldn't just look better, but it had to work properly for us as a family of four.

Our utility room is quite possibly one of the hardest-working rooms in our house, and for a long time, it was a bit of an afterthought, so we planned every addition around how we actually do laundry as a family, not how the utility room idea looks (although that was important too).

Living with it now, over the past few months, I can safely say these are the choices that make me feel quietly smug every single day, from utility room storage ideas for essentials like the iron and ironing board, to a lovely little brass retractable washing line that neatly tucks away unnoticed.

1. A pull-out shelf between the washing machine and dryer

I'll start with the addition I didn't realise we'd use constantly: a pull-out shelf between the washing machine and the dryer. It slides out when needed and disappears again afterwards, which is ideal in a compact space.

It's become the perfect spot for sorting wet laundry, parking baskets mid-load, and folding small items straight from the dryer and also for housing the HoldAll collapsible laundry basket, £35, from Joseph Joseph, which folds completely flat when the shelf isn't in use.

2. Pull out laundry baskets for each family member

Instead of multiple laundry baskets sitting out on surfaces, we built individual pull-out shelves with these baskets, £14.69 from URBNLIVING at Amazon, that can be lifted off easily for each family member, which tuck away neatly in a cupboard. Clean washing is now sorted as it goes in, which makes wash days quicker and far less chaotic.

It's also made clothes easier to put away as everyone has their own basket, so clean washing makes it back to the right rooms. It's a small tweak, but it's paid off hugely.

3. A large sorting laundry basket

Alongside the built-in storage, we added the large Tota Trio 90L laundry separation basket, £200, which has become one of the most-used items in the room. It's brilliant for quick sorting dirty laundry into lights, darks and colours and carrying laundry down from upstairs with the inner fabric baskets which come with handles. We love the Tota so much, we wrote an article on it.

It's sturdy, well-designed and actually nice to look at, which is exactly what you want from something on show.

4. A pull-out cupboard for washing products

All detergents, stain removers and laundry extras now live in a pull-out cupboard right beside the washing machine rather than scattered across shelves or tucked behind doors.

Everything is visible at a glance, easy to reach and store upright, so there's no more knocking bottles over or accidentally buying duplicates. It's a seriously practical upgrade that makes day-to-day laundry faff feel smoother.

5. A retractable washing line for indoor drying

To keep drying contained to one space, we added a stylish little brass retractable washing line, £14.99 at Amazon, that tucks neatly away when not in use. It's ideal for delicates, school uniforms and anything that isn't suitable for the inside of the tumble dryer.

Because it pulls out only when needed, the room never feels cluttered, and I no longer have laundry draped over radiators everywhere else in the house. It's also set up in a good spot to place one of the best dehumidifiers to help speed up the drying process.

6. A laundry chute

Yes, added a laundry chute, and no, I haven't stopped enjoying it. Dirty clothes from the bathroom go straight from upstairs into the utility room, which means no endless piles to carry down.

It feels like a luxury, but in practice, it's just so practical. If you are doing even a small utility room remodel and have the chance to include one, I'd definitely recommend it.

7. One floor-to-ceiling cupboard for all the awkward essentials

My last but by no means least practical addition is a single tall cupboard dedicated to all the bulky, awkward bits, like our heated clothes airer, ironing board, iron and steamers, vacuum and mop.

Having these stored neatly in one place has made the whole space feel more organised, rather than like a dumping ground for whatever doesn't fit elsewhere. Just throw them all in and shut the door. Job done.

A heated airer is a handy bit of kit, but with a wide variety of models ranging in quality and price, it can be tricky to find the best deal. Aside from checking to see if any of the best heated airers are on sale, I also scour the middle aisles of Lidl and Aldi to hunt down a bargain.

Lidl is currently selling a heated airer for £29.99, and normally I’d argue you won’t find a better deal - that is, until I spotted George Home’s airer, which also has received some pretty good reviews.

If you’re wondering how long a heated airer takes to dry clothes, essentially whether they are worth it or not, the answer is just four to eight hours on average. Anyone who’s dealt with laundry taking closer to four days to dry on a standard airer in winter will know this is a great time.

Considering an energy-hungry tumble dryer can still take over an hour to dry clothes, a heated airer is a good investment to make. While it takes longer to dry clothes, heated airers are cheaper to run than a tumble dryer.

George Home’s Silver Heated Winged Airer is made from aluminium and weighs just 5kg, making it lightweight and easily transportable for your home. It also folds for easy storage.

Its foldable nature comes down to its large wings, which also expand the surface area for drying clothes when opened. When the wings are open, the airer is 54 x 147 x 94 cm in size, meaning it can happily handle a standard load of washing. Plus, it comes with a 100-day warranty.

By contrast, Lidl’s heated airer looks very similar. It has the same dimensions as George Home’s airer, so I can assume it holds a similar load size. While George Home has not shared information about how much weight their airer can hold, Lidl has. The Lidl airer has a drying space of 12m and can hold up to 15kg of laundry. As George Home’s airer is the same size, I predict it can hold a similar amount of washing.

Lidl’s heated airer also costs just 7p per hour (according to the October Ofgem price cap), meaning it won’t make too much of a dent in your energy bills to use. By contrast, George Home does not have this information available, but some reviews do comment that it is affordable to run.

As much as I love the smell of freshly washed clothes, I know that drying them indoors can quickly create problems in the autumn/winter. When the weather turns cooler, it's tempting to keep laundry inside, hoping it will dry overnight, but turns out, what's really happening is that lots of water is being released into the air.

'Whilst air drying laundry in winter consumes little to no energy vs using a tumble dryer, it is a surefire way of contributing to excess moisture in the air as the water evaporates, especially when drying wet clothing over radiators,' explains Noel Fok, co-founder of EcoAir.

And Noel provides another nifty trick to dry your laundry quicker without a tumble dryer or dehumidifier: 'Clean, dry towels are naturally absorbent. If you place one right under or near your drying clothes, it acts like a sponge, drawing moisture out of the air and the clothes themselves. It’s essentially a cost-free, passive dehumidifier! Just remember to hang up the towel to dry or pop it in the wash afterwards so it doesn't get damp itself.'

Drying laundry indoors might feel like a convenient shortcut, but it can quickly lead to mould and poor air quality. A few small changes and a dehumidifier in the right place, if you can stretch to one, will keep your home dry and comfortable during these colder months.

It is very rare to see one of these versions going for under £100, even Lakeland, which is running a sale on their cult Dry: Soon heated clothes airers, doesn't have any on offer for under £100.

The reason the Argos three-tier version is so affordable is that it has forgone all the bells and whistles, like a timer and different heat settings. However, personally, I don't think you're missing much with these. I've tested three different heated airers over the last 4 years, and while I've found the timer functions helpful, I'd still opt for the cheaper heated airer and spend the extra money on an airer cover, which will speed up the drying time.

If you're looking for something even more budget-friendly to send your kids off to university with or to use as a backup drying space, the Argos Home heated clothes airer with wings might be a better option. I have always found the space that winged airers take up frustrating, but they are a brilliant shape and size for drying bedding. However, bear in mind that they hold less laundry than a tiered option.

Argos' winged heated clothes airer isn't quite the cheapest on the market at the moment. Amazon has beaten it with the Status Heated Clothes Airer, which is currently reduced from £59.99 to £35.55. However, the Argos one has glowing customer reviews, saying it's 'absolutely amazing' for drying clothes.

If you do invest in a heated airer, my top tip would be to also pick up a cover, which Argos also has on sale. These covers are a game-changer for drying your clothes faster by trapping the heat inside. When I've been in a rush, I've even popped my mini ProBreeze dehumidifier from Amazon under the cover to suck the moisture out and speed things up further.

I was sent off to university with a tiered heated clothes airer when they first launched over 10 years ago, and it was honestly the best thing my Mum bought me as a student. I still use the same Dry:Soon airer from Lakeland today.

One of my least favourite household chores is laundry. Firstly, because it never ends and secondly, because my tumble dryer spits out wrinkled, static clothes after taking ages to dry. But this is no longer a problem because I’ve found a simple, eco-friendly alternative that reduces drying time and leaves clothes wrinkle and static-free - dryer balls that are £5.95 on Amazon.

Laundry never feels like it’s finished, which is why I'm always looking for helpful ways that make the task a little easier. And if you don’t have one of the best irons, investing in affordable dryer balls can eliminate your need for one.

It’s a product that our Senior Editor and laundry expert Jenny McFarlane swears by, but if you need any more convincing, I’ve asked the experts exactly why you should be adding dryer balls to your laundry routine.

What are dryer balls?

Dryer balls are designed to bounce off the inside of your tumble dryer drum, increasing the air flow in your machine, reducing the drying time in the process. 'Plus, your clothes come out softer without the need for dryer sheets or softener. They're also natural and reusable, so I'm feeling smug about being more eco-friendly.'’

Wool is highly absorbent and durable, which makes it a far more sustainable option than dryer sheets.

‘Unlike dryer sheets, wool dryer balls are reusable, making them a more sustainable option. They’re expected to last around 1000 washing loads and should be replaced when the outer layer of felt has started to come apart,’ explains Matt Ayers, Appliance Expert at RDO Kitchens and Appliances.

‘If you’re looking to add a fragrance to your dryer balls, it’s safe to add a few drops of essential oils to them. Make sure the fragrance isn’t alcohol based as this is a potential fire hazard.’

Of course, you could also invest in one of the best heated airers (a good idea ahead of autumn) if you're looking to save energy, but dryer balls are a brilliant option if you have a busy family or simply can’t fulfil your laundry routine without your tumble dryer.

Few things in life compare to the feeling of getting into fresh bedding after a long day, in my opinion. But my one gripe after I've changed the sheets is how creased they look. Even with the luxury of drying bedding outdoors, they still come off the line with a multitude of wrinkles.

While I've tried to embrace the crumpled sheet look for many years now - I'm just not one for ironing the bedding, and I don't think I ever will be - I've always felt a little frustrated with how it made the bed set-up look. It's fair to say that I was impressed. After a few minutes, the sheet looked noticeably better, and smelled more fresh to boot. While the spray hadn't worked out every single crease (that would require a serious bit of power), there was no denying the difference it made.

Next, I repeated the process on the duvet cover, and I was equally impressed. I do think using your hand to really press the spray into the bedding makes a big difference - but I doubt I would have got the same results by just smoothing over the sheets without adding the spray first.

The bed looked far less rumpled and instantly fresher after using the crease spray on it, which in turn made it look even more inviting than usual.

Suffice to say that I'll definitely be using Lenor's Crease Releaser on my bedding going forward. It’s a quick, low-effort solution for anyone who can't be bothered to iron the sheets but still wants their bed to have that crisp, hotel-esque look.

As I've always said, I'm not a big ironer. But steaming clothes? I'm here for it. Ever since discovering the ease of steaming clothes, I've barely looked back at my iron. Sorry iron.

Now, a good thing to know before buying this clothes steamer is that it is on the small side, so I'm not sure I would use it for a mountain of laundry, but for everyday steaming and touch-ups, it's more than capable.

So if you hate ironing and have never tried clothes steaming, this is a brilliant starter model that won't break the bank. And if, like me, you're already sold on the convenience of a clothes steamer, it's a handy spare to keep upstairs or stash in a suitcase for crease-free holiday outfits.

I'll say it again: I'm not the biggest fan of ironing. So when I was asked the question 'should you iron your bedding?', it was a hard no from me.

I do love to dress a bed, especially when I have guests staying, and there's something so lovely about slipping into a freshly made bed after a hard day's slog, but I've never, ever thought about ironing the sheets before putting them on the bed.

Even if I had one of the best irons to use, ironing my sheets would feel like one job too many when I have a mountain of wrinkled laundry to contend with. It also seems like one of those little luxuries for the lucky few who have extra time on their hands, which I, for one, don't have with my two small children to run after.

However, some swear by the crisp, hotel-fresh sheets, and I guess if I did get the iron out, even just when guests come over, it would definitely earn me brownie points if my guest room felt a little more hotel-worthy.

I couldn't help but wonder if I was alone in my opinion, so I asked some of my Ideal Home colleagues whether they iron their bedding.

'I'm a firm believer that life is too short to iron bedding. Single duvet covers are manageable on an ironing board, but double or king-size duvet covers become unmanageable fast,' explains Sleep Editor, Amy Lockwood.

'That said, sadly, I do think cotton bedding does look far nicer when it's freshly pressed and uncreased. My compromise is to opt for textured bedding that hides creases. DUSK's Portofino Waffle Bedding is a great example. I have this lightweight cotton duvet set on my guest bed, and its textured surface means zero ironing needed before visitors descend. Similarly, linen or muslin bedding is a great option if you want to avoid laborious ironing or steaming.'

‘I haven’t used an iron since moving away from my parents over 10 years ago, and I don’t even own one - so I’m very much team don’t-iron-your-bedding. Although I love nothing more than fresh bedding, I don’t have the time or patience (or even the iron) to iron out a few wrinkles. I find that after a few nights of sleeping, they tend to flatten themselves out anyway, so it doesn’t bother me!’ says Content Editor, Lauren Bradbury, when I ask her.

Personally, I'm somewhere in the middle. I don't want to have to iron bedding to get it looking smooth and pristine, but I do like having it as wrinkle-free as I can using other means.

And our Managing Editor, Thea Babbington-Stitt, tends to agree: 'I go for the 'throw on a clothes airer and hope that some creases fall out' method. That said, I truly believe that few things feel as good as getting into a bed with clean, freshly ironed sheets. So while I don't do it myself, I applaud those who make the time and put in the effort!'

I go to some lengths to avoid having to get the iron out. I tend to use a crease release spray like Lenor crease releaser spray, £9.99 from Amazon (my favourite scent is Ruby Jasmine fyi), or a quick steam with my trusty Tefal aerosteam once the sheets are already on the bed. I think they work well for a fuss-free fix that still makes the bed look neat without the faff of a full ironing session.

Although for some, ironing can actually be a somewhat meditative chore, smoothing out those creases and watching the wrinkles melt away under the steam.

And Lauren's nan is one of those who seems to iron for pleasure. 'My nan irons everything from her socks to her handkerchiefs, and I know the act of ironing brings her a lot of joy, but that trait just hasn’t been passed down to me!'

Knowing what type of water to use in an iron can be confusing, and if you've been asking the question, 'should you use distilled water in an iron?' - you're not alone.

If you want to keep your iron in tip-top condition for years to come, the experts do recommend using distilled water - but the best practice is actually to use a combination of tap and distilled water.

Using distilled water is not a necessity per se, but it will mean you need to replace your iron less frequently. And if you've invested in one of the best steam irons, all the more reason to look after it. Here's all the info you need on the question: should you use distilled water in an iron?

Isabella Forgione, small appliance expert at AO.com, recommends using distilled water in your iron to help it keep running smoothly for longer. 'Because it doesn’t contain the minerals found in tap water, it helps prevent limescale build-up inside the iron’s steam vents and water tank,' she explains. 'This is especially useful if you live in a hard water area, where mineral deposits can clog up your appliance much faster.'

While you can descale an iron with white vinegar, using distilled water will reduce the frequency with which it needs cleaning. 'Distilled water helps the iron live longer because it is free from the minerals you get in tap water, which can clog the iron over time,' Maria Roderigue, professional cleaner at Wecasa agrees. 'It can also help avoid leaving any marks on your clothing.'

This handy postcode checker from Aqua Cure will indicate how hard the water is in your local area. If it comes back as hard, or even medium, it's worth using distilled water in your iron from here on out - but not exclusively, the experts advise.

Why combine distilled water with tap water?

For most irons, it's recommended to use a combination of tap water and distilled water. This applies whether you're using a corded or cordless iron.

'Some manufacturers recommend using a mix of distilled and tap water, or even just tap water, depending on the model,' Isabella explains. 'That’s because a small amount of minerals can help the iron’s sensors function properly. So it’s always worth checking your user manual first to see what’s best for your specific iron.'

If your iron is an older model, it's more likely to benefit from distilled water as it likely isn't designed to combat limescale build-up. 'Whereas newer models are usually designed to handle tap water and may include built-in descaling features,' Isabella adds.

Iron maintenance tips

So, check the manufacturer's instructions to see if they recommend distilled water or tap water in your iron. In general, a combination of the two is best.

Try to keep on top of cleaning your iron too. Whichever type of water you're using, a helping hand never goes amiss when it comes to preventing limescale.

'My top tip is to empty the water tank after each use and give it a quick wipe down,' Isabella advises. 'And if you do notice any white flakes or reduced steam output, it might be time to give it a good descale – especially if you’ve been using tap water regularly.'

Now that we've cleared up the question - should you use distilled water in an iron - you can follow the experts' advice and keep your iron ticking away for years to come.

I've admitted it before, I have a love-hate relationship with ironing. So, when I finally got my hands on a clothes steamer, I felt like I’d found the ultimate shortcut to smooth fabrics and easy wardrobe care with no ironing board in sight. However, while a clothes steamer can be an absolute lifesaver, there are a few little quirks worth knowing about before you click 'buy now.'

And while clothes steamers are fantastic for a quick freshen-up, sometimes only the best steam irons can tackle those stubborn creases in thicker fabrics like linen and denim. Saying that, a good clothes steamer that's right for you can be a game changer, especially if you’re short on time or patience. They’re quick to set up, easier on delicate fabrics, and they don’t take up nearly as much space as some of the best ironing boards.

From knowing the difference between handheld and upright steamers to understanding exactly how much steam power you need, there’s plenty to consider if you are thinking of replacing your good old iron and want your clothes to look fresh and crease-free. I just wish I'd known about them sooner.

1. Steam production and power make all the difference

One of the first things I learned is that the amount and consistency of steam make all the difference. My first steamer didn’t have much oomph, and I’d find myself going over the same part of the fabric over and over again, getting more frustrated.

'When it comes to steamers, the amount and consistency of steam is key. A good steamer should produce a steady flow of steam that’s strong enough to smooth out creases quickly,' explains Isabella Forgione, small appliance expert at AO.com.

'Look for models with higher wattage (around 1500W or more) as these tend to heat up faster and deliver more powerful steam.'

Next time, I’ll definitely pay more attention to the wattage as it’s absolutely worth the research.

2. The water tank capacity you need depends on usage

So, I naively thought a bigger tank was always better because fewer trips to the tap to fill it up time and time again, so I went for the largest one I could find, but as Isabella wisely points out, 'Water tank size can make a big difference, especially if you’re steaming multiple garments in one go.'

'A larger tank means fewer refills, but it can also make the unit heavier. For handheld models, a 200–300ml tank is usually enough for quick touch-ups, while upright steamers often come with 1L+ tanks for longer sessions.'

From a number of clothes steamers I've tested, I’ve found that a smaller tank is actually easier to handle for quick fixes, while an upright with a larger tank is a lifesaver when I’m tackling a whole pile of laundry, so they both definitely have their place.

3. Don't overlook safety and ease of use

Now I'll be really honest here and say I didn’t even think about safety features when I bought my first clothes steamer, but after a few minor skin singes, I realised they’re quite essential.

'Safety features like automatic shut-off and heat-resistant nozzles are a must, especially if you’re using the steamer regularly. Also, check how comfortable the handle is to hold and whether the controls are easy to reach – it makes a big difference during longer steaming sessions.'

It seems obvious, but a steamer that’s awkward to hold or has fiddly controls can turn a quick job into a real pain.

4. Extra features and accessories come in pretty handy

I didn’t pay much attention to the little extras that come with some steamers. Namely, things like fabric brushes, crease tools and glove protectors. However, some of these add-ons can really make steaming so much easier and more effective to boot, especially for trickier fabrics.

'Some steamers come with handy extras like fabric brushes, crease tools, or glove protectors,' explains Isabella. 'These can really help when steaming thicker fabrics or delicate items. A detachable water tank is also a bonus for easier refilling.'

5. Handheld vs upright

Naively, when I was getting my first steam cleaner, I thought any of them would do the trick, and I was solely going by how versatile they looked, but after doing a little research, it turns out that there's a big difference between handheld and upright models.

For example, my steamer is perfect for last-minute fixes, but an upright model is your go-to for more serious steaming sessions when you're powering through a load of washing.

Isabella explains, 'Handheld steamers are great for quick touch-ups and travel, while upright models are better for larger loads or regular use.'

'If you’re short on space, a compact handheld might be the way to go, but for full outfits or heavier fabrics, an upright steamer will give you better results.'

6. Maintenance and cleaning

One thing I didn’t think about at all was maintenance. Luckily, I live in a soft water area, but if you live in a hard water area, it'll probably not come as too much of a shock how quickly limescale can build up, so it's imperative to empty your steamer's tank after every use.

'To keep your steamer working well, it’s important to descale it regularly, especially if you live in a hard water area,' Isabella advises.

'Always empty the tank after use and let it dry out to prevent limescale build-up. Some models even come with self-cleaning functions, which is a nice bonus.'

7. Price and budget

Finally, let’s talk money. I always tend to think the more expensive the clothes steamer, the better it'll be, but that's not always the case, as it's more about what you need the clothes steamer to do. It is worth spending a little bit extra for a model that stands the test of time, though, as Isabella says.

'You don’t need to spend a fortune to get a good steamer, but it’s worth investing a little more if you want something reliable and long-lasting,' explains Isabella.

'Think about how often you’ll use it and what features matter most to you, as it’ll help you find the right balance between price and performance.'

Is there anything more satisfying than seeing a load of washing drying on the washing line? Didn’t think so. And if you’re anything like me, you probably want to whip the washing line out as soon as the sun starts to peek through the clouds. But it turns out that there are some things you should never dry on a washing line.

Yep, although the best heated clothes airers are my saving grace during the colder and wetter months of the year, there’s nothing quite like drying laundry items outside. Everything dries so much faster, it smells better, and it doesn’t take up so much space in the house. And while I’ve tended to opt for the ‘shove everything on the washing line without thinking about it’ method, recent conversations with laundry experts on drying clothes quickly have me doubting everything.

As Deyan Dimitrov, CEO of Laundryheap, told me, ‘Drying clothes on the washing line is common. But think before you peg. Certain garments don’t pair well with the outdoor elements.’ So, these are the 4 things you should never dry on a washing line, and what you can do instead.

1. Towels

I’m definitely guilty of not washing my towels as often as I should (I know, I know, I should know better), but I’m also guilty of hanging them on the washing line when I do get around to washing them. And according to Deya, this is one of the worst things you can do with the best bath towels.

He says, ‘Wind speeds up the drying process, but the wind is a harsh opponent. It can leave garments feeling rough, scratchy and less soft. For these items, it’s best to stick to a tumble dryer.’

Not only that, but Lisa Talbot, an award-winning personal stylist, also says that drying towels on the washing line can also affect their longevity. She warns, ‘While they may seem hardy, sunlight can stiffen towels and reduce their absorbency. They may also become scratchy, especially if air-dried outdoors on windy days.’

Of course, if you don’t have a tumble dryer, drying them inside is another alternative. And if you want to ensure that they stay extra soft and fluffy, it’s well worth washing your towels with vinegar, too. This Miniml White Vinegar from Lakeland is always my go-to.

2. Dark coloured clothes

Although you can hang a load of white washing on the line without any concerns, you need to be a little more careful when it comes to dark coloured clothes or items. In fact, Deyan warns, ‘Strong UV rays can cause more damage to your clothes than you might expect. UV light can break down clothing fibres, and also encourages colour fade by degrading the dyes in fabrics.’

And while UV rays are stronger on a sunnier day, they can still be damaging on a cloudy day - and more susceptible to harm your darker coloured clothes than your lighter ones. So, it’s a good idea to protect them as much as possible, just like how you should protect conservatory furniture from the sun, too.

However, the experts at Banana Moon Clothing state that you don’t have to stop putting dark clothing on a washing line completely. You just need to modify your methods to ensure they’re not spending too much time in direct sunlight.

They say, ‘Instead, try drying your clothing in direct sunlight for a smaller period of time, maybe an hour or so, then move the clothing into a more shaded area. The warmer air and spring breeze will be enough to dry your garments without too much exposure to the sun.’

3. Textured fabrics

Sometimes, the reason you shouldn’t dry laundry items on a washing line isn’t because of how the outside will affect the item, but rather how the item will affect you. This is especially true if you suffer from allergies or hay fever and want to pollen-proof your home.

As Deyan explains, ‘Another outdoor enemy is pollen. Pollen loves to stick to absorbent fabrics like cotton, and can get trapped in the tiny surface pockets of textured fabrics like corduroy and terry cloth.’

But what can you do? Well, ‘If you suffer from hayfever, avoid drying your favourite cotton shirts, corduroy skirts or towels on the washing line during peak pollen seasons,’ advises Deyan. If this isn’t possible, you should at least avoid hanging these textured materials out to dry when the pollen count is at its highest.

This is typically in the early morning and late afternoon/early evening. So, pop it out to dry during the middle of the day when the pollen count is typically lower instead. And for extra peace of mind, you could always use a lint roller like this Korbond Lint Roller from Amazon on your clothes before you store them.

4. Anything made from silk, satin or lace

If you’ve just bought a new pillowcase and want to know how to wash a silk pillowcase, or your fancy satin dress needs a whip around in the washing machine, it’s important to note that delicate fabrics like silk, satin or lace are also some of the laundry items you shouldn’t dry on a washing line.

For clothes that are safe to dry in a tumble dryer, you can try popping a couple of ice cubes in the drum alongside them. Decreasing clothes with ice cubes was a hack that went viral not too long ago, and many swear by its effectiveness.

'Putting ice cubes into your dryer creates steam which can help to smooth out any wrinkles in your clothing,' Ian Palmer-Smith, appliance repair expert at Domestic & General explains. 'You can get quick results by adding a few pieces of already dry, lightweight clothing into your dryer with some ice and running a short cycle; two or three cubes should be enough.'

Note that this hack won't work as well on heavier items of clothing. But Ian confirms that it is safe and won't damage your tumble dryer in any way.

'But I wouldn't recommend using this hack every wash as it will eventually start to accelerate corrosion,' he adds. 'And make sure to check your dryer’s manual beforehand to make sure it is safe to add ice to your appliance.'

2. Use dryer (or tennis) balls

Aside from the surprising things you can clean with a tennis ball, these handy balls are great for preventing clothes from getting wrinkly in the tumble dryer. You can buy a pack of four organic wool dryer balls for £7.99 on Amazon, which will also collect fluff and hair from your clothes and leave them smelling fresher.

Or, simply stick a couple of tennis balls in the drum and you'll be pleasantly surprised at the difference they make in terms of creases.

'As the dryer balls move around the tumble dryer, they separate the clothes, allowing warm air to reach all areas,' Chloe Blanchfield, Product Marketing Manager for Hisense UK explains.

'As a result, the clothes dry faster and with less clumping, therefore reducing the chance of creased clothes.'

3. Hang them up while showering

'I always recommend hanging creased clothes in a warm bathroom whilst you're having a bath or shower,' stylist Ali Lees from Inspired Styling says. 'The steam will help remove the creases and the clothing will naturally smooth out better when you're wearing the garment.'

This is definitely a good one to try, and surprisingly effective. The steam created by the shower is perfect for releasing wrinkles on clothes, especially when they're on a hanger.

4. Use a handheld steamer

A handheld steamer is probably the quickest way to get creases out of clothes without an iron. These handy little devices produce a lot of steam and target this directly on to garments, leaving them pretty much wrinkle-free.

'Handheld steamers are compact, easy to use and brilliant for delicate fabrics like silk,' Izzy Forgione, small appliances expert at AO.com says. 'To use one like a pro, wave your steamer over your clothes while they’re hanging and watch the wrinkles melt away.'

Portable clothes steamers are ideal for clothes that crease easily in a suitcase. I use the Tefal Pure Pop, £49.99 at John Lewis, which is lightweight enough to take on holiday, but powerful enough to do a good job.

We're also fans of the Tefal AeroSteam clothes steamer, which is bigger than the Pure Pop and packs a more powerful punch.

5. Try crease release spray

Crease release spray is perfect for when you've thrown an outfit on and realised it has wrinkles, but you don't have enough time to try the hacks above. It does a pretty good job of smoothing out larger creases, and is often scented, so will leave your clothes smelling fresher as well.

I use the Lenor Crease Release spray in the scent spring awakening, which you can buy as a 2-pack for £10.90 on Amazon. It doesn't leave my clothes completely crease-free, but there's always a huge improvement. I also spritz it over bedding that's come out the tumble dryer looking particularly creased.

A hairdryer can act as a stand-in for a handheld steamer when used in this way, but it won't remove wrinkles quite as effectively. Warm air isn't as hot as steam, so there will likely still be some creases at the end. It can't really be used as a substitute for an iron because you shouldn't run the hairdryer over the fabric directly, for safety reasons.

'A word of caution – never use high heat on embellishments or prints and avoid overheating your delicate fabrics like polyester or silk,' Izzy adds.

You just can’t beat that fresh breeze scent that comes from drying your washing outside, but if you suffer from hay fever, this is probably a pleasure you deny yourself during the summer months - but you don't need to if you choose the best time to dry your clothes outside with hay fever.

Dr. José advises using apps to track the pollen count in your area. Apps such as Your Pollen Pal and My Pollen Forecast UK are both handy ways to keep track of your local pollen count and plan accordingly.

Spot clean these kinds of curtains with a mild detergent (warm, soapy water is best), and use a fabric freshener spray like Febreze Unstoppables to spruce them up.

How to clean curtains with a steam cleaner

'If your curtains are suitable for steam cleaning, it's essential to test a small, inconspicuous area first,' Yvonne Keal, senior product manager at Hillarys advises. 'This will allow you to check for any adverse reactions like shrinkage, colour fading, or watermarks.'

Before you start, use a handheld vacuum or soft brush attachment to remove any dust or debris - this will allow the steam to clean the fabric more effectively.

Starting at the top and working your way downwards, hold the steam cleaner nozzle at a distance from the fabric to avoid direct contact, and use short bursts of steam rather than a continuous flow. The aim is to penetrate the fabric without drenching it. 'Over-saturating the fabric can lead to moisture damage and potential mould growth,' Yvonne explains.

'Your bathroom is a well-ventilated room designed to handle moisture which means using towel rails, shower rods or even wall-mounted racks is the ideal method to efficiently dry your washing load,' continues Gwilym.

Shadmaan adds, 'A bathroom with extractor fans is a good spot to dry laundry - as long as you haven’t had a long shower too recently.'

Other ideal options if you're stuck for how to dry clothes in a small space include a hallway, or near a window where natural sunlight will help freshen things up, and fresh air keeps damp at bay.

3. Use a dehumidifier

'Positioning a dehumidifier near your drying rack not only removes excess moisture from the air but also dries laundry efficiently,' advises Chris Michael, Managing Director of Meaco.

As I write about home appliances on a daily basis, you’d think that I’d know exactly what to buy for myself, my home, and my needs. But I’ll hold my hands up and say that I’ve made countless buying mistakes throughout my career, and now I’m sharing the 5 things I wish I knew before buying a heated airer, so you don’t waste your money on the wrong one like I did.

Yes, I’m the number one fan of the best heated clothes airers and could write about all of the benefits of a heated airer until the cows come home. But with so many different options on the market, I know that both choosing and using this appliance can be daunting. In fact, I’ve been there myself, and it didn’t take me long after buying my first heated airer to realise that I had been pretty clueless.

Not only did I buy the wrong heated airer, but I also needed to learn how to use it properly. And as some of my favourite heated airers are currently discounted in the Black Friday sales, I'm sharing the things I wish I knew before buying a heated airer to equip you with the information you need to choose the right one and use yours as effectively as possible.

1. Size really does matter

Many people associate the size of their heated airer with the actual physical dimensions of the appliance. In fact, that’s the heated airer buying mistake that I made - and so did Ideal Home’s Deputy Digital Editor, Rebecca Knight.

Yep, we both fell into the trap of choosing a heated airer that seemed as though it was the right dimensions for our homes rather than choosing one based on its load capacity. This essentially means the amount of laundry a heated airer can hold (and dry) at one time.

So, if you have a large family, a big washing machine, and regularly wash mammoth loads - or even bigger items like bed sheets - you’ll need to buy a heated airer with a bigger load capacity.

If you don’t, you’ll find yourself hanging towels and T-shirts on every available surface like I did until I upgraded to a heated airer with a bigger capacity.

2. You need to factor in space in your home

I’ll be honest; heated airers aren’t small, inconspicuous items that can be hidden out of the way. They’re big items that will take up a lot of space in your home - both when in use and when not in use. I didn’t consider this before buying a heated airer, and now my home office basically becomes a dry cleaners every time I want to dry a load of laundry.

That’s because you need to be very careful about where you place a heated airer, as it can damage your floors. This is echoed by Liam Cleverdon, Flooring Expert at Flooring King, who says, ‘As clothes dry, they release moisture into the air. This increased humidity can settle on the flooring, creating an environment conducive to mould growth and mildew. Over time, this excess moisture can also lead to damage to various flooring materials, including carpet and wood.’

In fact, it can even lead to warping in engineered wood and laminate if you’re not careful. So, you need to find a designated space for your heated airer that won’t damage your floors while also offering you the chance to open up a window to let out any excess moisture.

If physical space is an issue, you can also weigh up the different types of heated airer. A winged heated airer (which is wide and short) won’t suit a smaller home, but a taller and thinner one - or even a drying pod - will.

3. There’s no point buying one without a cover

When I first bought my heated airer (the Dry:Soon 3-Tier Heated Airer), I bought it without a cover - another mistake I regret. While I had nothing bad to say about the quality or the capabilities of the heated airer, I soon realised that it was taking over two hours longer than it should have to dry my clothes.

And while it doesn’t cost too much to run a heated airer, I’m still conscious of saving energy at home and cutting costs where I can. So, after a little research, I discovered that in most cases, you do need a cover for your heated airer.

In fact, if you buy one without a cover, your heated airer will also heat up a room rather than dedicating all of its heat to your clothes - something that’s handy when trying to keep a home warm in winter but not when you want dry items quickly.

Because of this, I wish I had known before buying a heated airer that it’s always better to buy a bundle that includes both the heated airer and the cover in one. But if you don’t want to buy a cover, you could also use the TikTok heated airer sheet hack instead.

4. There’s an art to clothing placement

Buying a cover for my heated airer drastically reduced my drying time, but another thing I wish I knew before buying a heated airer was that correct clothing placement is also key. In fact, it’s one of the best ways to get the most out of your heated airer.

I’ve had my heated airer for two years and discovered that hanging clothes on multiple rails (rather than dedicating one rail to one item) is the best way to ensure each item gets as much heat as possible to dry efficiently. Which rail you put them on also matters.

As Stuart Middleton, consumer energy expert at So Energy, explains, ‘Because heat rises, the clothes that are hung on the top tiers will likely dry first – so once these are ready to be put away, move your other garments up to fill their place. This will help to ensure that everything dries as quickly as possible, also reducing the amount of power you need to use.’

So, it’s always worth keeping an eye on your heated airer throughout the drying process - which is why I would always recommend using it while you’re at home. And while you can technically leave a heated airer on overnight, this does mean that you won’t be able to get involved and speed up the drying time.

5. You might have to take extra precautions

Although I wouldn’t be without my heated airer now and have recommended it to all of my friends and family, it’s fair to say that it’s not the perfect appliance.

In fact, that’s why many experts advise against using heated airers to dry clothes indoors. Cat Wiltshires from OnlineBedrooms.co.uk warns, ‘Sticking bedding on radiators and heated airers may seem tempting, but when the wet sheets come into contact with the warm heat, it lets off more moisture into the air, which could eventually cause dampness and mould.’

As I love my heated airer and do think it’s transformed how I dry clothes in winter and how I dry bedding in winter, there’s no way that I’d stop using it altogether because of this excess moisture. But after I learned that using a mixture of both wins the dehumidifier vs heated airer debate, I now use my dehumidifier when it’s particularly cold and wet outside to ensure the room stays at the ideal humidity.

So, another thing I wish I knew before buying a heated airer is that sometimes you also need one of the best dehumidifiers to tag team your laundry with. Thankfully, I already had one, but it's well worth investing in one if you don’t already have one.

Since my first heated airer I have remedied many of my own mistakes, and now I wouldn't' be without it on laundry day.

But it is worth nothing that in most cases, it's only ever recommended to dry clothes on a radiator if you're using an airer, otherwise it should be avoided completely due to the risk of damp developing, increased energy use, and safety concerns.

'Wet clothes being placed directly on radiators could result in moisture being spread in the air and over time, mould build-up in the room in question,' explains James Longley, managing director at Utility Bidder. 'It is also important to be aware of the dangers of drying clothes on radiators, and these include the risk of ignition and fire risk due to flammable materials being placed on a heat source,' he continues.

‘By placing clothes on your radiator you are blocking the heat from coming out of the radiator and circulating around the room properly,’ explains Mark Carter, director Shutterstore UK. ‘This means the heat will get trapped under the clothes preventing the room from efficiently heating.'

'As clothes release moisture into the air, the excess moisture can accumulate in your home, creating a damp and humid atmosphere,' continues Rob. ‘The excessive moisture provides a breeding ground for mould spores to thrive. It can exacerbate any existing allergic reactions, respiratory problems or asthma you might have.’

There are aesthetic problems, too. ‘Some thicker items, such as a big thick woolly jumper, or jeans may not dry evenly on a radiator so could leave damp spots, which could lead to a damp or mildew smell coming from the clothes,’ cautions Mark.

What should you do instead?

Luckily there are measures you can take which doesn’t mean going back to the tumble drier.

‘Instead of putting wet clothes on radiators, try using a clothes rail in front of radiators to dry them. It’s a great way to get extra use of the energy you are already using,’ says Rob.

‘Alternatively, a heated towel rail is your best answer. Bathrooms are an ideal place to install your towel rail and you should use a clothes rail as they can combat excess moisture thanks to modern bathrooms having proper ventilation and waterproof surfaces.

‘A utility room is another spot to place your rail if you need an extra place to hang your washing.’

Now that we can’t hang our washing out on the line, everyone is in the same boat of trying to dry clothes without a tumble dryer. But whether you’re still weighing up whether a heated airer is worth it (spoiler alert: It really is!), or you’ve recently bought a heated airer without a cover, you might be curious to know whether you need to buy this extra accessory or not.

That’s why we’ve consulted with experts and shared our own experiences with heated airer covers to help you decide whether you need a cover for your heated airer. But we think we already know what your answer will be…

Why you need a cover for your heated airer

We should preface this by saying that your heated airer will still work if you don’t have a cover. The rails will still heat up, and your clothes will still dry - but they’ll dry a lot slower, compared to a heated airer with a cover.

As Tommy Singh, Product Development Director at Beldray, explains, ‘Using a cover on your heated clothes airer can enhance its performance by trapping heat which reduces drying time.’

In fact, if you choose not to use a cover you run the risk of this hot air escaping into the room and away from your clothes. Then, only the areas of clothing in direct contact with the hot rails will dry quickly - unless you move them around regularly.

Tommy adds, ‘Covers help create a mini-drying environment, ensuring that the warmth from the airer is evenly distributed. This is particularly helpful in colder or more humid environments, where the air around the airer may not be as susceptible to fast drying.’

So, not only does this mean that you’ll be able to dry your clothes fast in winter, but it also means that the cost to run a heated airer will be reduced as it won’t be on for as long.

But how much time does a heated airer cut off the drying time? Well, when Molly Cleary, Ideal Home’s Kitchen Appliances Editor, bought a basic heated airer without a cover, she found that her clothes would take a whole day to dry thoroughly.

When she tried the TikTok heated airer sheet hack (which bypasses the need for a specific heated airer cover for a double bedsheet), she found that it cut the drying time by half. And I can vouch for this with branded heated airer covers, too.

But I have used it both with and without a cover, and the difference was huge. While a load of washing took around 18 hours to dry without the cover, it took less than six to dry with the cover.

2. Make sure it’s flame-resistant

Without a cover, your heated airer will heat your clothes at around 60℃. With a cover, it will create an environment that’s much warmer (typically around 70℃). Due to these high temperatures, you must ensure that your heated airer cover is safe to use in these conditions.

Dan says, ‘Ensure the cover is specifically designed for heated clothes airers and is made of a flame-resistant material.’ This is something to consider if you choose to try the TikTok sheet hack, too.

Although a sheet is proven to work, it might not be safe, so you should only use flame-resistant sheets to prevent any disasters. This is especially true if you plan on leaving your heated airer on overnight.

3. Always choose the right size

One of the best things about heated airers is that they come in many different sizes, which means that you can choose one that suits your home and drying habits perfectly. But if you opt for a cover to use with it, you need to make sure you choose the right size, as this can drastically affect the appliance's efficiency and even its safety.

‘The cover should fit snugly but not too tightly, as this can lead to overheating,’ Dan explains. Of course, it also shouldn't be too big, as this will allow the heat to escape.

4. If possible, buy a heated airer/cover bundle

Of course, you can buy a cover after buying your heated airer. But if you want to ensure that this appliance dries your clothes as effectively as possible and ticks all of the above boxes, you should ideally buy a heated airer that’s sold with a cover as standard.
