When planning how I wanted my tiny urban garden to look, I took inspiration from my favourite London and Parisienne cafe. They managed to turn small outdoor spaces into a pocket-sized oasis with simple bistro sets and pretty table lamps, and Aldi is dropping the perfect set of solar table lamps for under £5 this week.

Cafe-gardens have become an emerging garden trend. This trend is all about turning any outdoor space you have into a version of your own at-home coffee shop/wine bar. It's a look made for small garden ideas, as it romanticises the humble bistro set as the perfect spot for a quiet morning coffee or an intimate glass of wine in the evening.

An outdoor table lamp is an essential part of elevating a bistro set. You'll see them on the tables of most chic cafes or wine bars, casting a lovely, romantic glow in the evening. I've been on the hunt for one, and Aldi's mushroom lamps are not only chic but the most affordable I've come across.

The Aldi table lamps launch in-store on 9th July in two different styles. There is the mushroom lamp, my particular favourite, with its conical shape and a circular design that will cast out more light from the sides. Both of them are available in black, white/beige and sage; however if is the sharp black version that caught my eye as looking the most expensive and sophisticated.

Both styles of lamp are priced at £4.99, which is also a great reason to buy them. Most rechargeable outdoor lights will cost you around twice that price. However, there is another star reason to buy them: they're solar-powered rather than rechargeable, so as long as you leave them out in a sunny spot, they can be left to do their thing without plugging into a charger every few days.

The most similar solar lamp I've come across in terms of look and price to the Aldi version is this Solar Black Metal Table Lamp at Habitat, on sale for £9.60.

These table lamps aren't the only gems in the Aldi specialbuy drop this week. In the middle aisle, you'll also be able to find the Solar Penzance Candle Lanterns for £8.99, which are perfect for elevating the romantic feel of a garden. I'm also very tempted by the solar decorative string lights for £7.99 that have a similar chic and simple design to the table lamps.

The best planned garden lighting ideas are all about creating layers and pockets of illumination. That is as simple as stringing up some lights along the fence for ambience, adding task lighting with a table lamp on a bistro set, and finally dotting in decorative lanterns as accent lights to illuminate planting.

Alternatives

Aldi's lights will only be available to purchase in-store, so I'm having to go on a dedicated shopping trip on the 9th to hunt a pair down. However, if you don't have a store near you, here are a couple of other affordable garden lamps I've been considering to get the cafe-garden look.

When this lamp was first released, it went out of stock super quickly. In the comments of Olivia's Instagram reel, many people have clearly been eagerly awaiting it's return, so you won't want to wait around before buying.

I've searched high and low for similar styles, but it seems like this Next lamp is one of the first of it's kind, particularly on the high street.

As alfresco evenings become our norm, outdoor lighting is just as essential. Pooky's new release of outdoor lighting is one to watch, with colourful lanterns that will perfectly decorate any tablescape.

I write about garden lighting almost every day in the summer, so it takes quite a bit to impress me. However, cult favourite lighting brand Pooky's new outdoor rechargeable lantern caught my attention immediately. I got to see these stylish garden lights IRL on the day of the launch – and to say that I ‘liked’ them would be a huge understatement.

The Pooky Stefan lantern by The Novogratz is easily the prettiest garden lighting idea I’ve seen this year. And I don’t say this lightly, especially since I’ve already seen some lovely outdoor lamps and lighting solutions this season as stylish and whimsical lighting is one of the biggest garden trends.

The outdoor rechargeable lanterns were created in collaboration with US design duo Cortney and Robert Novogratz, also known as The Novogratz. Available in five pretty colours, the collection was previously launched in the US last year, but now it's landed in the UK.

Pooky’s interior wireless lamps have been a huge success since day one and are among the brand’s top sellers. But this is the British brand’s first foray into outdoor rechargeable lights, utilising the same signature Genesis cell to power it as the company’s other wireless designs. This allows the lanterns to illuminate your outdoor space for anywhere from nine to 17 hours, depending on the chosen brightness, which can in turn be controlled with the included remote control.

I’m certain these outdoor lights will fly off the shelves in no time, especially given their unique design. I’ve never seen lanterns take on such a charming shape, reminiscent of bird houses or even bird feeders – but in the best way possible. And this becomes especially obvious if you choose to hang them up as Pooky is selling a specially designed lantern hook for £40 to go with these lanterns.

Not only do these lanterns boast an original shape and come in five beautiful shades, but there are also three sizes available to choose from, with prices starting at £140 for the smallest (and cutest) one.

The lanterns were launched in the US, on The Novogratz duo’s home turf, last year. Originally, they planned to keep the launch to the US, but after much demand they decided to bring them back to the UK.

When speaking to Jo Plant, chief creative officer at Pooky, she revealed that it was the dark blue ‘denim’ colourway that turned out to be the bestseller in the US, to her surprise. However, it’s the green ‘moss’ and the pink ‘blush’ that she predicts will do well here in the UK.

For Cortney Novogratz, the colourful aspect of the design was perhaps the most important and exciting, ‘What I love most is how we've brought much-needed colour to outdoor spaces - especially that vintage-toned pink - and the way the cordless technology allows these stunning designs to enhance any gathering without limitations.’

But if you’d like to bring some whimsy into your interiors, you can use these Pooky lanterns indoors, too, as I have done with my little denim blue number.

Which colourway have you got your eye on?

Long summer days spent in the garden are here and on the horizon for the foreseeable future. But once the sun sets, you’ll still want to illuminate your outdoor space and create a cosy, magical atmosphere. And the IKEA SOLVINDEN solar lantern is the perfect tool for that – as not only is it stylish, it’s also selling for just £11 a pop.

Both modern and chic, as well as whimsical garden lighting ideas have been all the rage this season since lighting’s not only functional but also an easy way to elevate an outdoor space, much like it does inside your home. And somehow, the IKEA SOLVINDEN outdoor lantern manages to be both modern and chic while being whimsical, too.

The lantern shape references fairytale-like Japanese garden lighting ideas. But as with most of its designs, the Swedish retailer put a fun and contemporary twist on the classic by streamlining the shape and giving it a more sculptural look, finished with a pistachio green colourway.

The lantern runs on solar energy, which means it charges during the day when the sun is out and then utilises the power once the dark sets in and turns it into light. It’s part of a wider IKEA SOLVINDEN outdoor lighting range which also includes popular designs like the SOLVINDEN lamp stand and the LED decoration lighting in a range of colours and sizes.

But the lantern is currently beating both in terms of popularity as it’s the sixth bestselling outdoor lighting design from IKEA. And existing customers are already obsessed with it.

One reviewer wrote, ‘Great quality! The solar panel stores energy perfectly, so the lamp stays lit late into the night. It’s ideal for placing the lamp on a windowsill or a patio table.’

Meanwhile, another customer pointed out that the lamp can even withstand light rain. ‘Very nice, it illuminates well and has always worked even when wet. I love it.’

But if you like the idea of outdoor solar lanterns but are not 100% sold on the IKEA style, I’ve found a few alternatives that are just as chic.

In the last few years, lamps and lighting in general have become incredibly popular. While interior designers and other interior experts have always known about the power of lighting, recently, most people have discovered how the ambiance of a room can be changed with the right (or wrong) lighting. Layered lighting schemes are where it’s at and the 5-7 lighting rule is the expert-approved tool to help you achieve it in your home.

The 5-7 lighting rule is very simple. In essence, it dictates that every room should have between five and seven sources of light from various lamps and light fixtures. And it encourages to stop relying solely on the ‘big light’.

‘The 5-7 rule is a simple yet effective approach that focuses on creating a lighting scheme that feels balanced and atmospheric rather than overly dependent on one dominant central light,’ explains Julian Page, head of design at BHS. ‘In practice, this means making sure that each room has between five and seven different light sources which are of varying strengths, heights, designs, and placements.’

This approach is great both for creating a lovely atmosphere and for practicality as it offers more flexibility. ‘Layer lighting throughout the space using a combination of ambient, task and accent lighting. This might include ceiling lights, table lamps, floor lamps, wall lights and decorative lighting, all working together to create depth, atmosphere and flexibility, allowing you to switch between brighter functional lighting and a softer, more atmospheric glow depending on the occasion,’ Jo at Pooky says.

My top picks for a layered lighting scheme

‘It’s less about hitting a specific number and more about ensuring that a room has a balanced mix of ambient, task and accent lighting to create warmth, depth and character,’ Jo at Pooky says. Even in smaller spaces that don’t require as many as five to seven sources of light, a layered lighting scheme is desirable, just with fewer lamps.

The 5-7 lighting rule is a great guide to getting your home’s lighting right. And with time, you won’t even have to think about the rule – it will become intuitive.

If you love a summer party that drifts late into the evening, outdoor lighting is a must. I think I've just found the ultimate garden light no summer hosting fan should be without at Next: the New Garden White Lima Portable Rechargeable Light.

Lighting lovers listen up, George Home has dropped an all-glass table lamp, and at £38 it’s more than half the price of the viral M&S All Over Glass Table Lamp (£99).

The all-glass look emerged as a lighting trend earlier this year when M&S dropped their now viral glass table lamp that had all the Ideal Home’s team obsessed. The M&S lamp proved so popular that it was launched in a mini and wall light version.

You’d be mistaken for thinking the M&S All Over Glass Lamp was designer. If you told me the lamp was from Soho Home, I’d believe you. One of my favourite styles is the Outsunny boho rattan floor lamp which comes with three lights and a built-in side table – and perhaps it’s no surprise that it’s currently Amazon’s bestseller, too. Also from Outsunny, the low garden rattan lamp is another popular design with over 50 sold in the last month.

2. Argos

If you’re looking for outdoor lighting on a budget, Argos is a great place to go to – outdoor floor lamps included. Whether that’s from Argos’ own brand or from Habitat that’s stocked at Argos.

Whether you’re after something that would look right at home in your actual living room - in which case I recommend the Habitat solar rattan floor lamp, perfect for adding some extra natural texture, too - or if you want something that very much reads outdoor like this Argos Home solar powered lampost style, this retailer has got it all. And you won’t spend more than £65 on them either.

3. Cox & Cox

Cox & Cox is not only one of the best places to buy rattan garden furniture, parasols and sun loungers - although the brand truly excels in all of those categories - its outdoor lighting range is also one to have on your radar, including Cox & Cox’s outdoor floor lamps.

The pricing is in the mid range and every one of the designs looks extremely sleek and stylish, whether it’s the beautifully rust-coloured Nocturne rechargeable LED floor lamp or the Elowen design which is a chicer take on the traditional post light but looks so much more elevated.

4. Debenhams

Don’t sleep on Debenhams’ outdoor furniture and accessories range because it’s not only huge but it’s also full of great deals that seem to always be on. The retailer’s outdoor lighting range is almost as large as Amazon’s, offering a varied range of brands, styles and price points.

While none of my top picks are currently on sale, it’s a varied price range starting at just £39.99 for the solar floor lamp from Garden Greatness (what a brand name!). If you’re willing to spend a little more then I recommend this outdoor solar floor lamp from Wyld and Coco with a chic oval shade. But if you’re after more of a designer-style statement then the LED outdoor floor lamp from the same brand is the one, although it’s a bit more spenny at £239.99.

5. Lampandlight.co.uk

Lampandlight.co.uk is another great online retailer with a wide range of outdoor floor lamps, as well as other garden lighting. While the brand has pretty much everything you can think of on offer, including similar styles as the other retailers sell, it’s the more unique designs that I’d go to Lampandlight.co.uk for.

The first outdoor floor lamp from Lampandlight.co.uk that really impressed me was the Jannie design outdoor floor lamp which has a very original shape for an outdoor lamp – if anything, it reminds of MADE’s Piper table lamp. Another top pick would be the Robbert design outdoor floor lamp which looks like a stylish statement floor lamp for a living room. I’d never have guessed it’s designed for the outdoors.

6. ValueLights

ValueLights is not only one of my favourite places to buy lighting for my home, but it’s also a brand I’d recommend for budget-friendly outdoor lighting like garden floor lamps. Granted, the designs are a little bit more traditional but they’re affordable.

And if you’re after an outdoor floor lamp that’s on the smaller side and won’t overwhelm your space then ValueLights has got you sorted with the likes of its solar rattan tripod floor lamp or the black rattan LED floor lamp. But my personal favourite style is the solar floor lamp with a rattan shade that will create beautiful shadow patterns.

7. Westwing

Westwing is a newcomer to the UK market, having launched here only earlier this year. But it’s a retailer well established in European countries like Germany, France and Denmark and it’s well known for its range of design-forward products from various brands, including its own. And that offering happens to include several super cool outdoor floor lamps.

If I had to pick one favourite lamp from this entire list, it would have to be the Lola dimmable outdoor LED floor lamp from Newgarden, available at Westwing. The design made all in rattan is extremely chic. Another favourite is the Newgarden Monica outdoor LED floor lamp with a sphere-shaped lampshade and a thick green base which reminds me of a lollipop – what’s not to like?!

I've been on the hunt for some rechargeable wall lights for months to fill an empty wall and a set to go up my staircase. I'm looking for something that oozes luxury, at a reasonable price tag, and I've found just the thing in Dusk's rechargeable lights range.

Dusk has emerged as one of our favourite affordable online homeware stores at Ideal Home. They won us over with their bedding, and we've been impressed with all the furniture and lighting they've launched in recent years.

I love a statement table lamp, and I think I might just have found the best one of the season - if not the year - at Next. I spied the £85 Isac table lamp from the N. Premium range at Next's latest spring summer showcase, and I honestly can’t stop thinking about.

This unique living room lighting idea caught my eye because of its sculptural shape – a shape and design that I’ve never seen on a lamp before. In fact, the table lamp doesn’t look like a lamp at all, but rather an abstract sculpture or a vase with an organic silhouette. Only once it lights up from within does it become clear that it’s a lamp.

The textured ceramic lamp is available in a black and white colourway – but in my opinion, the black version looks far more elevated than the other.

It certainly doesn’t look like a classic Next lamp – no offence to Next by any means. But I think you’d agree that Next is known for more traditional styles of lamps – many of which are very stylish and even in line with the latest home decor trends. But the Isac lamp design looks more like something thought up in the studio of a designer brand.

So it’s perhaps no surprise that the Isac lamp is part of the N. Premium collection. Next’s N. Premium range was first introduced at the start of last year. As the name suggests, it’s the brand’s more luxurious and premium line of products that look and feel expensive.

While the price points are slightly higher than what you might expect from the ‘regular Next’, given the high-end finish of the pieces, they are actually very affordable for what they are. That includes the Isac table lamp, which looks a lot more expensive than its £85 price tag.

Sculptural shapes are one of the biggest lighting trends of 2026 so this Next lamp feels very relevant – but given its uniqueness, I’d be just as impressed by it any other season. In fact, artistic, sculptural and organic shapes on anything are very popular at the minute – and Next has clearly taken note as there were a few other pieces at the press preview I spotted that fit the bill, with the below being some of my favourites. The new Next Clemmie storage armchair is an honourable mention that wasn't included at the preview but it's one I'm currently obsessed with.

What are your thoughts on sculptural, organic shapes like the N. Premium Isac table lamp in your home – yay or nay?

MADE’s Piper table lamp is one of the brand’s bestsellers which regularly sells out – in fact, at the time of writing, it’s currently sold out at John Lewis, one of MADE’s biggest stockists. So imagine my excitement when I came across Habitat’s Blake opal glass table lamp which is the spitting image of MADE’s design – but it’s selling for less than half the price.

While MADE’s Piper lamp is selling for £59 a piece which these days is quite a standard, reasonable price for a table lamp, Habitat’s take on the look is only £28 which is an absolute bargain in my opinion. Especially given the very stylish and intriguing design of both of the lamps which are very much in step with one of this year’s biggest lighting trends.

Interestingly shaped, sculptural lamps and light fixtures are the focus of home decor trends in 2026. And both the MADE Piper lamp and the Habitat Blake hit the brief with the curved metal base and the large opal glass shade which sits atop it. And it’s this unusual shape that makes both of the lamps look much more expensive than they actually are, almost like a high-end designer piece.

Habitat’s Blake lamp only comes in one colourway (at least for now) which is baby blue. But since MADE’s design has been around for longer, it’s available in four different colours – my favourite is the chrome finish, and Very has actually released a budget-friendly alternative for it earlier this year. But it’s not as close as Habitat’s Blake.

And since the MADE table lamp enjoys much popularity, the brand’s also come out with a Piper wall light version and a flush ceiling light, both available at John Lewis.

But if this lamp aesthetic is not quite to your taste - as it is a very particular aesthetic that you’ll either love or hate - I’ve come across a few other great buys in the Habitat table lamp section. These are my top 3 recommendations that have really impressed me.

What are your thoughts on the Habitat Blake lamp – is it a yay or nay from you? Or do you prefer the look of one of these alternatives?

It’s at times like these that I truly regret not having my own garden. I just stumbled upon the most charming outdoor lights and if I didn’t share my garden with five other flats, I’d be buying the Next natural pebble outdoor solar lights right now. Especially since the small size is sold out already – and I fear the medium size might soon follow suit.

If you’re on the hunt for a new lampshade, M&S have got you covered with their pretty new wave scallop lamp shade. It's only just landed online, but it's already become a bestseller and sold out in one of the colourways.

As I do my daily scroll through all the homeware sites, it's clear that scalloped edging is a trend that's going nowhere. You'll spot it on everything from trays to terracotta plant pots. This £45 M&S lampshade has given the trend a sophisticated upgrade.

Globe lights were a huge breakout garden trend in 2025, and I'm pleased to report that they're back for 2026, and the best I’ve seen this year is easily Dunelm’s Solar Ball Mood Light (£40).

Last year, the outdoor globe lamp trend took over garden lighting ideas. The globe light trend had originated indoors as a way to add depth and colour variations to a room. Outdoors, they became equally popular due to the gorgeous glow they cast across patios and garden borders.

Outdoor globe lights come in a mix of styles, with some offering a range of different colours for a party vibe, and others doubling up as architectural features in the garden during the day. The Dunelm version falls into the latter category with a speckled finish that makes it look like a sculpture during the day, and it's already selling out fast.

I love a globe light, and have done so ever since I picked up Habitat’s Calliban Globe Light in orange (£20) for my flat. They omit a beautiful, cosy glow, while the spherical shape makes this style of light look effortlessly stylish and retro.

In the garden, this translates to a soft, diffused glow, with a look that comes straight from an enchanted garden. So whether you're after a budget-friendly way to upgrade your living room lighting ideas, or you simply want to switch up the look of your favourite lamp, these expert tips can help.

1. Swap the bulb

Initially, we might think making a lamp look more expensive comes down to how it looks on the outside - the stand, the shade, the wires, etc. etc. - and while all of that stuff definitely plays a part, it's just as (if not more) important to think about the bulb itself.

According to Julian Page, Head of Design at BHS, 'one of the most effective ways to make a table or floor lamp look more expensive is to use a warm white LED bulb, typically around 2700K–3000K. This creates a rich, inviting glow that mimics high-end hotel lighting, avoiding the harsh, cold tones that can make a room feel clinical.'

So, first thing's first, make sure you've got the right bulb. This is an easy way to give your lamp a glow-up, without spending a lot of money - you can get 6x 2700K warm light bulbs for just £12.99 on Amazon, for instance.

2. Upgrade the shade

When we look at a lamp, it's mainly the shade our eyes are drawn to. As most of these are detachable from the stand, swapping this out for a prettier design is one of the most effective ways to make your lamp look more expensive.

There's plenty room to get creative here, too. 'The key is to choose something that feels considered and designer-led, such as a pleated fabric shade in a bold floral, subtle stripe or graphic geometric,' Emma Deterding, Founder and Creative Director of Kelling Designs advises.

'Even the most neutral base will feel elevated when paired with a textured linen shade, while rich jewel tones or statement prints will add depth, character and eye-catching detail.'

3. Banish surrounding clutter

A lesser-known trick to make your lamp look more expensive is to simply remove any clutter surrounding it. Sarah Ross, Co-Founder and Creative Director of Addison Ross, says this will work wonders for any lamp in the home.

'The area around the lamp should feel thoughtfully styled, allowing it to become a focal point rather than competing for attention among other objects,' she explains.

This is especially true for bedroom lighting - we can go to a lot of effort to find the right lamp for our bedside table, but it won't shine to it full potential on a cluttered surface. If this sounds familiar, take some time to remove some items from the lamp's vicinity. It doesn't need to stand alone by any means, but any large objects that take away from the lamp's aesthetic are a detriment to how expensive it looks.

4. Add a layer underneath

'Placing lamps on a small stack of books or a tray will add depth and presence,' Emma from Kelling Designs says. 'It's a simple trick, but it works.'

5. Play around with positioning

Lastly, where you put the lamp plays a big part in how expensive it looks. Another trick that doesn't cost a dime, this one might involve a bit of trial and error: it's all about finding where you think the lamp looks best.

Pro designer and lighting expert Julian Page suggests styling table lamps 'as part of a curated ‘vignette’ on a sideboard or console table. And for rechargeable lamps, positioning them in unexpected spots like a deep bookshelf or a kitchen island creates a sophisticated, custom-lit look that usually requires expensive electrical work.'

There's definitely a lot more freedom with where you can place a cordless lamp, and there are some great budget-friendly options available. I have this simple rechargeable lamp (£24.99 at Amazon) propped on a pile of books in my living room. It could easily have cost me more than it did, and I think a big part of that is where it's placed: on a coffee table, where the eye is naturally drawn.

That said, traditional plug-in lamps can still be placed strategically. 'I find it effective to place them alongside neutral or natural textures, such as wood, stone, or ceramic,' Sarah Ross suggests. 'Understated materials elevate the overall look and allow the lamp to truly shine.'

This week, John Lewis dropped its spring/summer 2026 homeware collection – and I was lucky enough to get an IRL preview of all the most hotly anticipated new pieces. Most of the next collection is already live on the website, with a few others set to launch in the next few weeks. And while there were many beautiful new decor pieces on display, it was the new John Lewis donut lamp that really impressed me.

Why was it such a highlight? For a few reasons. For one, even though it’s called and sold as a ‘table lamp’, it actually also doubles as a wall light and can be used that way. It makes for a great living room lighting idea, and while it comes with a cord that needs to be plugged in, it’s much easier than having to install and wire it, as many other wall lights do. Alternatively, you could opt for a smart rechargeable bulb and scrap the wire altogether.

Donut lamps similar to this one have been a consistent lighting trend ever since the release of the viral IKEA VARMBLIXT lamp which is also widely used both as a table lamp and a wall light. But while the IKEA donut lamp sells for £55, the new John Lewis light is £15 cheaper, retailing for only £40 a pop.

And arguably, I’d say it’s a more elevated and stylish take on the donut lamp look compared to IKEA’s which is a bit more fun, playful and trendy. There’s also more choice when it comes to the John Lewis lamp as it comes in three different earthy colourways you can pick from – my favourite auburn, as well as green and greige, all made with a glossy glazed ceramic base and a frosted glass ball shade on top.

It’s no secret that the Ideal Home team are huge fans of Binky Felstead’s farmhouse-style kitchen. The former Made In Chelsea star is well known for incredible taste and ability to nail home decor trends. Her home is colourful yet rustic, all tied together by her tasteful homeware choices.

Her scalloped fabric ceiling shades are the latest design choice to catch my eye. Adding some vintage-style charm to her already characterful kitchen, Binky’s shades are an expert example of how to make the fabric lamp trend timeless.

Billowing, draping and frilly fabric lights are predicted to be a huge lighting trend this year. We’ve seen this French, vintage style for a few years now, but with more and more of these styles of lamps available to shop on the high street, I predict they will only become more popular.

It doesn’t look the same as Binky’s, but I think its structured, pleated shape gives it a contemporary look that is suited to any home.

‘Frilly pendant lights reintroduced romantic, nostalgic detailing into modern interiors, and fabric lampshades build on that appetite for softness,' comments Annabelle Sacher, Retail Trends Lead at MediaVision.

'Interest in frilly lamps specifically has grown by +33% on Pinterest, showing that people are still drawn to playful trims and decorative edges, but now want them in more flexible, lower-commitment formats. Fabric lamps allow homeowners to experiment with trend-led design without changing hardwired lighting, which makes them feel more accessible.'

‘Binky’s lamps look so effective because they balance character with restraint. The fabric lampshades add softness and a slightly vintage feel, while the surrounding kitchen design remains clean and neutral, allowing the lighting to stand out without overpowering the space. This blend of old and new reflects a wider nostalgia-led interiors movement, which is also visible in the +25% increase in Etsy searches for fabric lampshades, where shoppers are actively seeking handcrafted or traditional-feeling pieces.’

How to style frilly shades

‘Frilly or gathered fabric lampshades are most effective when integrated into a thoughtful, layered lighting scheme,’ says Julian Page, Head of Design at BHS.

‘To ensure the shade remains the focal point without overwhelming the space, pair it with a solid, neutral base and position it on a bedside table or console as an accent piece. These designs sit beautifully within traditional or eclectic interiors—particularly those with vintage or country influences—but the key is to keep the surrounding décor relatively restrained. Opting for sophisticated, muted tones like cream, blush, or soft grey will ensure the look feels contemporary rather than dated.

As Binky’s Instagram proves, this style of lighting is well-suited to warm, farmhouse-style spaces. The diffused lighting creates a cosy atmosphere, making this less suitable for cold-toned or white kitchens. Plus, statement shades are a big kitchen lighting trend this year, if keeping up with the latest styles is important to you.

Stainless steel is emerging as a premium choice, offering a sleek aesthetic alongside durability, with a lustrous finish designed to last and age beautifully over time,' he concludes.

2. Cosy wall lighting

Many of the biggest kitchen trends for 2026 surround creating a cosy, inviting cooking space that encourages people to linger. It's the small touches that have the largest impact on curating this atmosphere, and lighting choices that add character and ambience have a significant role to play.

Instead of focusing on overhead lighting, adding wall lights creates a touch of whimsy while also acting as useful illumination over worktops.

'Wall lights are a great way of mixing up the feel of a room, they seem to create a softer light and really give character to a room, I would always recommend wall lights in a kitchen,' explains Helen Parker, creative director of deVOL Kitchens.

'Also, a few little occasional lights are nice for added atmosphere, a little pool of light in a dark corner is the perfect way to create lovely little spots in a room, an unexpected light and a little styling in an otherwise dark corner can be the making of a room.'

3. Statement pendant lights

Pendant lights are no new design feature, but while we once saw industrial-style brass lamps as the most popular choice, Murano glass-style pendants are in for 2026.

Dramatic stones are a big kitchen trend this year and a glass pendant with an equally beautiful design will tap into the look. The style matters, but so does how you hang them, as Massimo explains.

'When hanging glass pendants over a kitchen island, proportion and placement are key. Fixtures should sit at a height that feels both comfortable and practical, low enough to provide useful light, but high enough to keep sightlines clear. Spacing matters too, and pendants should be evenly distributed across the island without appearing crowded.'

And to have your kitchen lighting meet more than one trend, Massimo recommends, 'Consider adding a dimmer, they offer enhanced flexibility allowing you to seamlessly shift the mood from bright and functional to soft and inviting.'

It might be gloomy outside, but it doesn't need to feel gloomy inside your home. The lights in your home are for so much more than turning on when it gets dark outside; the right bulb, shade and placement can all work together to make your home feel warmer and cosier.

Lighting is crucial to the ambience of a room, especially in these dark winter months when we're so reliant on artificial lighting in our homes. However, I'll put my hand up and admit that while I'll spend days agonising over the best place to buy lighting for my living room, I will spare barely a second thought to what bulb I choose.

It's this oversight that has sabotaged my cosy living room ideas. I might have all the staples of the perfect comfortable room, but without the right glow, on dreary days it feels cold and uninviting. To fix this, I've spoken to a range of lighting experts and buyers from Pooky, ValueLights, Industville and Arteriors about the five lighting tricks that will instantly make your home feel warmer, and the one they all mentioned costs less than £5 to put into action.

1. Switch to warm light bulbs

Every lighting expert I spoke to mentioned the power of switching to warm white light bulbs to make a room feel warmer. You can transform the feel of the lighting in your whole home for under £5 by switching out cool white bulbs to warm white light bulbs for £1.49 at B&Q.

'Warm-toned bulbs bring a calming, amber hue that emulates the comfort of natural daylight, helping your home feel cosy when it's grey outside. I suggest introducing warm-toned LED bulbs in living rooms and bedrooms where you want to create a soft, relaxing glow,' recommends Julia Barnes, buying direct at ValueLights.

'For a warm cosy feel during the winter months, I always recommend choosing a warm white bulb with a colour temperature between 2,700 and 3,000 kelvin,' adds Jo Plant, chief creative officer at Pooky. 'This softer, yellow-white light closely mimics the glow of candelight or a fire, which naturally makes us feel more relaxed and comfortable when the days are darker and shorter.'

2. Update the 'big light' with an amber bulb

While most experts recommend against relying on one overhead light, they saythe 'big light' can be adapted to cast a warmer light in winter. 'To do this, consider the colour and texture of the bulb or fixture itself - amber glass bulbs and tinted glass like mocha-smoked proved a warmer glow than clear glass,' explains Mara Rypacek Miller, founder of Industville.

Amber bulbs cast a warmer glow than a traditional warm white light bulb. In fact, this pair of large amber-hued warm light globe bulbs, £10 at Amazon, also claims to be blue light-blocking to help you sleep. Alternatively, you could opt for a frosted glass warm white bulb like this Philips frosted classic bulb, £5.59 from John Lewis, to help soften and diffuse the light from an overhead source.

3. Choose fabric shades

In the same way, you can soften your lighting with a coloured or frosted bulb, opting for a linen or silk lamp shade will help diffuse the light for a warm and cosy glow. This tip can be used on ceiling lights, wall lights, floor lights and table lamps.

'Opt for shades made from fabric, glass or other diffusing materials that soften and spread light evenly across the room,' recommends Julia from ValueLights.

Helen Pett, brand ambassador at Arteriors, also recommends considering the metal finishes. 'The choice of fixtures and materials also works to achieve a warm scheme overall,' she says. 'Table lamps in woven fabrics or frosted shades diffuse light softly, while finishes like antique brass or vintage bronze introduce a richness that complements the glow.'

Take advantage of the recent lighting trend for linen lampshades, but don't forget about paper shades if you're on more of a budget. A scandi-style paper lamp shade is a classic way to soften the light in a room, and you can pick them up for half the price of a fabric lampshade, like this £25 paper ceiling shade at John Lewis.

4. Layer in lighting at different heights

Layering lighting is one of those other tips that always comes up when speaking to lighting pros about curating a warm and cosy scheme. It is as simple as making sure you have several light sources at different heights around a room, each creating these cosy pockets of light. It is essentially an excuse to invest in that pretty table lamp you've had your eye on.

'The key to making a room feel warm is layering your lighting rather than relying on a single source,' explains Jo from Pooky.

'A combination of ambient lighting, such as ceiling lights, along with wall lights, table lamps and floor lamps, allows you to create depth and softness within a space. Lower-level lighting instantly feels more intimate and inviting than light coming from directly overhead.'

5. Keep lighting consistent

Buying a pack of bulbs in the same warm colour temperature to create a consistent glow in a room might sound like a no-brainer. However, I know I'm guilty of having a mismatch of different bulbs in a selection of lamps in one room.

You will instantly create a more inviting atmosphere by taking the time to swap all the bulbs to a matching colour temperature. It is also a good idea to match the materials of the lighting sources you've used.

'To maintain a sense of consistency across the different sources, keep the bulb temperature the same, using warm white bulbs (2,700K to 3,000K), and establish a unifying design element across products, such as matching holder material or metal finish,' adds Mara from Industville.

Jo from Pooky agrees, 'try to keep the colour temperature consistent across a room to create a harmonious, welcoming atmosphere.'

‘This trend builds on the dopamine-inspired palette we saw last year, but in a more refined and considered way. Coloured glass pendants, particularly in amber or pinks, can be layered. I also love using orange in smaller accents like a coloured lamp base.’

‘Rechargeable lighting continues to be a standout category for us season after season,’ says Jo Plant, chief creative officer at Pooky. ‘It’s an evolution rather than a brand-new trend – driven by how people live now, and offering flexibility, ease and beautiful design.

'Portable lamps can move effortlessly from room to room, which encourages people to experiment more with placement and styling. They’re perfect for adding a cosy glow to darker corners, highlighting features like alcove shelving, or bringing atmosphere to dining tables, mantels and bedside tables. Because they don’t need wiring, they make it incredibly easy to layer light throughout the home.’

3. Incorporate wall sconces

Another style of lighting that’s set to be popular this year is the wall sconce – a feature of perhaps more traditional homes that’s being given a contemporary twist.

‘I anticipate wall sconces will be one of the leading lighting trends in 2026, offering an elegant way to layer light throughout the home,' Julia at ValueLights says.

'They were once considered a more traditional design feature, but they’re very much back on trend thanks to more contemporary designs that suit a range of interiors. I love using wall sconces either side of a bed. They are also perfect for framing artwork or mirrors, adding symmetry, colour, and texture to blank walls or otherwise unused spaces without taking up floor space.'

4. Opt for metal-finish lighting

Metal finishes continue to be really popular among lighting shoppers. But while 2025 belonged largely to the chrome lighting trend - which is still on trend this year, too - in 2026, metals with a more aged look are going to be even bigger than before, especially brushed brass.

‘Brushed brass and antique gold are still popular light fixture and fittings colours as they bring an instant sense of warmth and luxury to a space. These metals look aged which gives the feeling they’ve been there forever and that the light was made for that room. Jo at Pooky adds, ‘We consistently see brass outperforming other finishes like bronze or nickel, across everything from table lamps to wall lights, pendants and flush fittings. It has a warmth and versatility that makes it incredibly easy to live with.’

5. Add warm, dimmable lightbulbs

‘Always consider the quality of light too – I lean towards daylight or warm bulbs. Cool light can feel sharp, whereas warmth makes a space feel like home,’ Esther at Curiousa says.

Warm-toned lighting is pretty much essential for creating a cosy ambiance in your home, especially once the light is turned on. So opting for warm lightbulbs over cool ones is key. A dimmable feature is also a plus as it makes it even easier to create the right atmosphere in your home.

‘I anticipate warm, dimmable bulbs will become essential, not just for cosy season but throughout the whole year, as they allow controlled layering of ambient, task and accent lighting,’ Julia at ValueLights says.

6. Make a statement with sculptural shapes

In the last couple of years, lighting has come a long way, especially the high street options. So you can get some beautiful and unique lamps without breaking the bank, which in turn has led to the rise of the statement lighting trend. Lamps and light fixtures can look almost like pieces of art with sculptural forms and interesting shapes.

‘People are craving pieces with character, depth and a story. Ultra-minimal or purely neutral lighting that doesn’t connect with the rest of a room’s personality feels less inspiring. Lighting should not just illuminate a space but it should evoke feeling and atmosphere,’ Esther at Curiousa says.

Jo at Pooky concludes, ‘Customers are becoming increasingly confident in choosing lighting that reflects their own taste, rather than chasing short-lived micro-trends, building on what we saw in 2025.’

The new year always brings a fresh batch of homeware, and it is one of the latest drops at Marks & Spencer that has just changed my mind about the animal print trend in interiors: the new M&S cow-print table lamp.

Despite shunning the leopard print trend and other trending animal prints, I have fallen head over heels for the animal print table lamp, and I now need it in my life and in my home asap.

Cow print is set to continue being one of the major home decor trends in 2026 as product releases such as this M&S table lamp are a proof of. But if you’re not sure what pairs well with cow print and how to style a piece like this in your home, Lucy at Arighi Bianchi has some tips.

‘Pair with natural textures like linen, wool, jute, and warm woods to enhance its organic feel, or balance against smoother surfaces such as timber, stone, and painted finishes for contrast,' she suggests. 'Earthy colour schemes work particularly well with cow print - warm neutrals, soft browns, rusts, ochres, and charcoals - allowing the pattern to feel cohesive rather than overly shouty.

'Soft, diffused lighting will highlight the texture. Just be careful not to go too full-on cowboy; treat cow print as a thoughtful accent rather than a full-room statement for a look that feels timeless, cosy, and effortlessly stylish,’ she advises.

1. Argos/Habitat

Habitat offers some lovely lighting options selling for affordable prices but boasting high-end looks, as is the case with the Habitat mango wood table lamp that’s been popular ever since launch, thanks to its similarity to a pricier Zara Home lamp. The Habitat Caliban glass globe lamp, which also comes in an XL size, is another cult favourite, especially since it comes in colourful orange and blue versions, too.

The brand’s regular collaborations with the likes of Morris & Co. and designer Margo Selby also produce lovely statement table and floor lamps to decorate your home with.

2. H&M Home

I haven’t been able to stop talking about H&M Home’s lamps, especially table lamps, pretty much all year round. I really think it’s an underrated place to shop for lighting; it's something of a hidden gem.

Since H&M is a Swedish brand, the lamps have that sleek, stylish Scandi look to them. It’s another high-street brand with lamps at high-street prices that often look designer.

The shapes of the lamps are very clean and uncomplicated, which is something I really appreciate about them - and it’s partly what gives them that high-end look - but it’s the colours and finishes like on-trend cherry red, chocolate brown, chrome or burl effect that make the lamps a standout piece.

3. Marks & Spencer

In the last couple of years, Marks & Spencer has really stepped up its lighting game becoming a high-street go-to for table lamps especially. Ever since the viral popularity of its Kirsten table lamp, the retailer has been bringing out new stylish sellout designs every season.

The M&S lamps are often right on trend when it comes to lighting trends, whether that’s striped lamps or the most recent M&S lamp collection featuring more organic materials and clean lines.

4. John Lewis

Lighting has become a big and important category for John Lewis, too. And as John Lewis is a big retailer stocking several various brands, as well as its own products, there is a wide choice of all sorts of products to choose from, including ceiling lights and pendants, along with wall lights, table and floor lamps of different styles and price ranges.

I love the John Lewis own-brand lighting like the Elliott desk lamp - which I think is the perfect budget alternative for the cult favourite Anglepoise desk lamps - as well as cool designs from the likes of MADE.

5. Urban Outfitters

Urban Outfitters is a more recent discovery for me. As a millennial, I’ve often discounted Urban Outfitters as a brand catering for teenagers and the Gen Z generation. But having recently perused Urban Outfitters’ lighting range, I was beyond impressed with what was on offer. And now I have several top picks.

Besides the more funky - but still very nice and cool - lights taking on the shape of food items like a cherry, an olive or ramen noodles, there are also chic designs like the Verity stone table lamp or innovative ones like the Codi floor lamp that also functions as a side table.

6. ValueLights

When it comes to ValueLights, the brand’s biggest benefit is already in the name – it’s an excellent value for money. I personally own a ValueLights floor lamp that champions the wiggle lamp trend.

But there are so many other chic styles available in the brand’s offering, from more traditional designs to on-trend lamps. And more often than not, you can find more affordable alternatives to high-end lighting styles in ValueLights’ collection.

7. Pooky

Pooky is a brand fully dedicated to all things lighting which explains why its range is so damn good. It’s definitely on the pricier side but the light fittings are high quality and so beautiful. So much so that many other brands have actually taken to creating dupes for many Pooky lamp designs.

While it’s easier to find a nice affordable table or floor lamp these days, whenever I look for a wall light or a ceiling light - especially if it’s a flush or a semi-flushed one I’m after - I always go straight to Pooky. Because it never disappoints.

If you’re open to splurging on your lighting a little bit, then I can’t recommend OKA enough. The lamps from OKA are full of grandiose old world charm, while also being unique and innovative at the same time. How the brand manages to achieve this perfect balance with every lamp it designs I don’t know, but it’s definitely working.

While prices start at £100 (for just a base without a lampshade), whatever OKA lamp you decide to invest in will be the statement piece of any room you put it in that will attract endless compliments from guests coming through your door, it’s pretty much guaranteed.

Next recently launched its mix and match lighting collection with a wide range of lamp bases and lampshades which you can mix and match as you like to create your perfect lamp – a similar concept to Pooky’s table lamp range.

But even before Next released this particular range, its lighting offering was very strong with everything from table lamps to chic wall and ceiling lights available, both the retailer’s own designs and other brands it stocks.

Much like John Lewis, Anthropologie is another place to shop for various brands of lamps and light fittings in mid to high price range. From Addison Ross’ viral bobbin wireless lamps to Nkuku’s lighting made with sustainable natural materials, as well as the brand’s own lighting designs, you can get all of it in one place. And as with everything from Anthropologie, it’s all very chic and often very much on trend.

Where do you like to shop for your lighting?

In my books, Urban Outfitters has always been a brand catering for teenagers - even back when I was one myself - and now the younger Gen Z generation of early 20-somethings.

It’s definitely never been my go-to for stylish, elevated lamps – up until this week that is, when I happened to be scrolling through the brand’s lighting offering and found myself swooning over a whole list of Urban Outfitters lamps, even though I’m a true millennial.

I have a minor obsession with lamps and lighting, even though I am pretty fussy at the same time so I don’t get impressed all that easily. And while I don’t really have much space left for any more lamps in my home - as I’ve said before when admiring the designer-look H&M Home table lamps - I can still window shop and live vicariously through the purchases of others, yourself included.

I have since moved house though, so there might just be a spot for one new living room lighting idea in my new abode, which makes me very happy – could it be an Urban Outfitters number?

A large portion of Urban Outfitters’ lighting range is very dopamine decor-esque, which includes funky lamps in shapes of food – there’s everything from ramen noodles to my personal favourite, the cherry.

But even if you’re not particularly into this quirky lighting trend and rather are after something a little more elevated and timeless, there are plenty of chic lamps to choose from, many of which champion some of the latest home decor trends, while others have more of a retro charm, taking inspiration from midcentury and 1970s designs.

While Urban Outfitters is more of a new addition to my list of go-to places where to buy lighting, there are, of course, so many other high street brands with beautiful lamps, including the aforementioned H&M Home, M&S and Habitat among several others.

Where do you like to shop for stylish lamps and light fittings?

IKEA is known for its very simple, flatpack furniture available at affordable prices. But IKEA is not just the everyday person’s go-to place for furniture and homeware – professionals like interior designers and stylists love IKEA just as much as we do, but they might opt for different pieces. So I wondered – what are interior designer’s favourite IKEA table lamps?

IKEA’s lighting range is large, filled with endless living room, home office and bedroom lighting ideas. And it’s almost surprisingly good – I regularly find new lustworthy lamps and lighting trends when going through IKEA’s offering, whether it’s the viral IKEA SPETSBOJ table lamp or the most recent matchstick-shaped IKEA STRALA lamp.

But given their professional knowledge and expertise, interior designers and stylists’ go-to IKEA lamps that they swear by would be better informed top picks from the Swedish retailer’s collection. Which is exactly why I was curious to find out which table lamps are their favourite. In all honesty, I wasn’t surprised by their picks…

1. IKEA FADO lamp

‘The FADO table lamp has this timeless, spherical form that feels both sculptural and serene,’ says interior designer Bilal Rehman. ‘From a design standpoint, it’s a great example of how simple geometry can completely change the mood of a space. The frosted glass diffuses light, beautifully softening edges and creating a warm, ambient glow that’s perfect for layering lighting in an interior.’

There is also an IKEA hack to make your FADO lamp a little more colourful – simply by adding a colourful or colour-changing lightbulb like this one from Amazon. Alternatively, you can invest in the pretty much identical Habitat Caliban globe lamp which comes in orange or blue glass, as well as the classic white.

2. IKEA KUDDLAVA lamp

Jo Lane, interior designer and founder at See Your Place, describes the IKEA KUDDLAVA lamp as ‘a very on-trend pleated silhouette that cheats the look of much more expensive brands’. And I couldn’t agree more – the pleated, origami-style design also doesn’t look like something I would normally expect or associate with IKEA.

But as Jo already pointed out, it is a very trendy style of lighting and there are other brands making similar pleated paper table lamps to IKEA’s KUDDLAVA. These would be my top 3:

3. IKEA VARMBLIXT lamp

We’ve all seen the viral IKEA doughnut lamp at this point as it’s become something of an iconic design. After it first launched, it sold out almost immediately. Luckily, now it’s firmly back in stock. But it’s not just people on social media loving it, interior designers are just as enchanted.

‘I’m a fan of warm, atmospheric lighting, so the VARMBLIXT is an obvious winner for me,’ says John Cooper, interior designer and winner of Interior Design Masters Series 6. ‘I love its versatility, it works beautifully as both a table lamp and a wall light, which instantly makes it more adaptable to different spaces. This is the kind of piece that creates a cosy, ambient glow that softens a room’s mood. Its simple, sculptural form has an honest, friendly appeal that feels effortlessly modern.’

But if you’d like to go for something a little different that has a similar look or don’t like to shop at IKEA, here are a few alternatives you can shop, too.

4. IKEA RANARP lamp

‘The RANARP lamp is my go-to for home offices and bedside tables,’ says Sam Sutherland, Flitch interior stylist. ‘It’s beautifully utilitarian, with a touch of retro factory style, and the adjustable arm makes it feel far more considered than its price tag suggests.’

I love the slightly industrial look of this desk lamp. And I think the lever arm really elevates it. But if you’re after some alternatives, I found a few, too.

Bilal Rehman concludes, ‘Each of these lamps strikes a thoughtful balance between form and function, making them easy to integrate into a variety of spaces. They may not serve as the main focal point, but they subtly enhance and elevate the overall atmosphere of any room.’

A bathroom is a room that can be tricky to design. It requires practicality above all else, and often this means steering away from more 'fun' design choices - particularly when it comes to bathroom lighting. It's safe to say I'm an interior design maximalist with a more is more approach, but the bathroom is one place I've had to succumb to minimalism.

If, like me, you want to inject colour and personality into your wash space (and have a zealous attitude towards print and chintz), the thought of paring it back might be a foreign concept. However, there is a great argument for sticking to minimalist interior design choices with bathroom lighting, and instead allowing other parts of the room to do the talking.

Don't believe me? I've also asked the experts - here's why it might be best to steer clear of maximalist lighting with your bathroom ideas.

When designing a bathroom, careful attention must be paid to balance functionality (through waterproof surfaces and carefully considered layouts) and style. You don't want a bathroom to feel stark and clinical, so creating continuity from other areas through to the bathroom will make it feel like a comfortable space to spend time in.

Bathroom lighting ideas can be one of the trickier parts of a design; there are specific rules around where you can position lighting in a bathroom so this will largely dictate what types of fittings you go for. I love going bold in a bathroom, making it feel like a joyful place to start and end your day, but this doesn't extend to lighting.

'In a bathroom, lighting should enhance the space rather than compete with it. Maximalist fittings, however striking, often compromise practicality, particularly when it comes to moisture levels, ceiling height and light distribution,' explains Louise Ashdown, head of design at West One Bathrooms.

In a kitchen, I love using wall lights with fabric shades to add whimsy to a practical space, and dramatic pendant lights are fabulous for defining a kitchen island and adding illumination in abundance. But in a bathroom, going big on these smaller features adds unnecessary faff to a scheme.

'Steam and shadows are not a good combination, and large decorative shades can distort how light falls around mirrors or basins,' Louise continues. 'The most effective schemes use discreet fittings in layered zones: ambient ceiling lighting, task lighting for grooming, and softer, dimmable options for bathing. The aim is to create light that flatters the space and the person using it.'

However, interior design is always subjective, and there's always a place for nuance.

As Keeley Sutcliffe, design manager at BC Designs, explains, 'bathrooms do not have to be minimalist to feel calm.' If you're set on making a moment out of a dramatic light fixture, then there are some ways around it.

'The key is to choose a feature piece that works with the room’s proportions and sits outside the splash zone, so it still meets the required IP ratings. For example, a chandelier over a freestanding bath can transform the space into something far more atmospheric, provided it is installed safely and supported by subtle background lighting. In the right setting, maximalist lighting is not a distraction but adds a visual statement,' Keeley adds.

I'll still be sticking to minimalist fittings both on the walls and ceilings, but a dramatic ceiling light is a sure way to add flair without impeding on the practicality of the space.

Why is tortoiseshell lighting trending?

‘As with most trends, you don’t have to look very far to see why a certain colour, pattern or design is having a moment in interiors. Which of the new colourways is your favourite?

I love table lamps, and have littered nearly every surface in my home with them. However, I can honestly say I've never managed to buy the one that casts that perfect warming and flattering glow. Or at least that was the case until I discovered the golden rule for choosing the right size table lamp.

When researching living room lighting ideas, I found that nearly every lighting expert I spoke to recommended the same rule about how tall a table lamp should be. Now, in general, there are very few hard and fast rules about table lamps, but this is one they all took note of.

'The golden rule is height: when you’re seated, the bottom of the shade should sit around eye level so the bulb is hidden. This gives you that flattering, cosy glow across faces and fabrics,' explains Julian Page, Head of Design at BHS, who are famed for their lighting range.

Daniel Smith, Founder of furniture and lighting brand, Danetti, agrees, adding that you need to 'choose a lamp that feels in harmony with its surroundings, too tall or too bright, and it dominates; too small, and it disappears. Ideally, your lamp should sit at eye level when you’re seated, casting an even, flattering light that enhances both the décor and the mood.'

In a living room, if you've followed the 4-inch seating rule, that means all your chosen table lamps should be tall enough to sit at around eye level when you are sitting on the sofa.

Of course, as with any rule, there is some flexibility. For example, what do you do if you live with someone who is taller or shorter than you, like I do? In these cases, first look at how and where you all usually sit in the room, and then you can test out what is a comfortable height for everyone.

While getting the correct height is part of the puzzle, the placement is also key to getting the shadows right.

'Table lamps are all about creating atmosphere and balance, so where you place them matters just as much as the design itself,' explains Julia Barnes, Buying Director at ValueLights. 'A lamp positioned at eye level when you’re seated will cast a softer, more flattering glow, while one set slightly behind or beside you creates depth without being overpowering. It's all in the shadowing. Consider where the shadow will fall, and how large it might feel.

While this rule works for casting the most flattering light from a table lamp, don't let it restrict you from creating a few more pockets of light around the room to highlight some of your favourite home decor features. That could be two wall sconces illuminating your fireplace ideas, or a low floor lamp casting a glow among a collection of house plants.

'For a truly inviting atmosphere, aim to create soft pools of light throughout the room rather than relying on harsh overhead illumination. Layering is key - combining table lamps with floor lights and wall sconces creates depth and mood,' adds Jo Plan, Chief Creative Officer at Pooky.

Yep, if you've browsed the lighting department of any high street store recently, you'll probably know that rechargeable table lamps are big news, but now, rechargeable *wall* lights are flooding the market, and that's fantastic news for bedroom wall lighting ideas.

Versatile, cord-free, and now available in a wide range of styles, this lighting trend enables all of us to embrace the bedroom lighting idea that's much-loved by interior designers – that is, placing wall lights either side of your bed or headboard – without the hassle of hardwiring in new bedroom electrics.

Plus, experts say rechargeable wall lights are the ideal solution to a clutter-free bedroom, especially if you're searching for space-saving small bedroom lighting ideas. Here's why.

'Rechargeable wall lights are brilliant for creating a clutter-free bedside,' shares Jo Plant, chief creative officer at lighting brand Pooky.

'No cords, no hardwiring, whether you’re reading, working, or just winding down, they give you just the right light exactly where you need it without taking up precious surface space.'

'We're seeing more and more homeowners choosing wall lights at the bedside instead of table lamps,' agrees Helen Ashmore, head of design at interiors brand Laura Ashley.

'Glass fixtures will cast a warm, inviting glow across your interior, whereas wall lights with a bell shade will cast the light downwards more – the perfect task lighting for reading.'

'If you're someone who likes reading in bed, then opting for wall lights with adjustable arms or directional lamp shades will provide targeted lighting without any glare,' adds Helen.

In fact, you can now get dedicated rechargeable reading lights, which are perfect for avoiding bedtime arguments if one of you is a night owl and the other prefers to go to sleep early.

'From a style perspective, choose wall lights that complement your overall interior design scheme, and ensure the scale of the fittings feels in proportion with your headboard and any bedside furniture,' advises Helen.

'To get the placement of wall lights either side of a bed right, first consider the height of your bed and how high you sit when you’re on your bed,' says Ally. A galley kitchen is famously one of the most difficult kitchen layouts to work with. Long and narrow, it leaves little scope for being experimental with cabinetry, and kitchen lighting ideas are even trickier to navigate.

As the nights start drawing in, lighting plays a bigger role in our kitchen than ever before. Evenings spent cooking now need bright illumination, and when hosting, ambient lighting is essential for creating a cosy, inviting atmosphere. But where should you position lights in a galley kitchen?

Opting for multiple different forms of illumination is key in a kitchen - it creates a scheme full of depth and intrigue, as well as ensuring every corner is well-lit.

1. Choose an overheard light

An overhead light is perhaps the most obvious choice for a galley kitchen, but it still requires careful consideration. While a pendant light Creates a focal point between the two opposing runs of cabinetry, it likely won't be enough to illuminate the full length of a galley kitchen.

'Lighting is key in a galley kitchen, where space and shadow can easily compete. 2. Create illumination over worktops with wall lights

Galley kitchens often lack those little pockets where warmth and dimension can be created, thanks to the simple, narrow layout. One of my favourite ways to add interest is by adding wall lights to these runs of cabinetry, adding a decorative element as well as illumination.

You could choose to flank a sink with wall lights placed either side, or you could feature a wall light on its own. Picture lights are also a handy way of adding a stylised area to a galley kitchen; prop on open shelving or do away with wall cabinetry in one area, and instead opt for a large piece of wall art with a picture light.

3. Focus on flexibility with a portable lamp

'Reading lights are having a real moment,' says Jo Plant, chief creative officer at lighting specialists Pooky, 'and they can be a lifesaver for couples'.

'A reading light gives you the perfect pool of light without having to flood the whole room. Whether it’s for a late-night page-turner or just a soft glow to wind down, that means you can have your own dedicated light without disturbing the other person’s sleep.'

'Reading lights are a great addition to the bedroom,' agrees Emma Deterding, founder and creative director of interior design agency Kelling Designs.

'They provide focused illumination for reading without disturbing a partner, and add to the layered lighting scheme that is crucial to making the bedroom a restful and inviting space.'

However, when it comes to how to plan bedroom lighting, the good news is you no longer have to consider adding reading lights at the wiring stage. I'm now seeing lots of plug-in and rechargeable reading lights hitting the high street, which are far easier to retrofit.

'There are plenty of stylish cordless, battery-operated, or clamp-on options these days,' agrees Jo. 'They’re easy to install, adjustable, and look just as polished as a hardwired fixture. Perfect if you’re renting, or just want something flexible without the fuss of electrical work.'

What to consider before buying

So, do our experts have any top tips on what we should consider when investing in reading lights for the bedroom?

First up, unless you're adding a reading light to a single bed, think in pairs, even if you think only one half of a couple will actually use the light to read. 'Installing matching fixtures on either side of the bed will create a balanced and symmetrical look,' explains interior designer Emma.

Next, 'when choosing your lights, be sure to consider designs that are adjustable,' says Emma. 'Whether it's through an articulating arm or a directional shade, this will help you to control the brightness and direction of the beam.'

'Adjustable arms or swing-head designs are perfect as they give you control and make your light as practical as it is pretty,' agrees Jo.

Then, think about positioning. 'The key is to balance reach with comfort,' explains Jo. 'Ideally, position the reading light just above shoulder height when sitting up in bed, angled so it illuminates your book without casting shadows or shining in your partner’s eyes.'

'In terms of positioning, you want to place wall-mounted options roughly 50cm - 65cm above the mattress,' says Emma. 'Ideally, slightly to the side of the sleeper's shoulder to ensure the beam falls onto the page without creating glare or casting a harsh shadow.'

'Reading lights no longer an afterthought but a key part of how we use and enjoy our bedrooms,' sums up Jo.

I’ve designed four kitchens in my life, each one reflecting a different chapter in both my style and cooking needs. From my first post-grad two-up, two-down house to our current family home, to which we’ve added a whopping open-plan kitchen extension, I’ve tried every cabinet design, material, and layout trick in the book. But one thing took me far longer to master than I’d like to admit – the kitchen lighting ideas.

In my first kitchen reno, I was fixated on cabinet colours, tiling and worktops, and, above all, how to make it look as impressive as possible on a minuscule DIY budget. Lighting came last.

I could say it was an afterthought, but in truth, I didn’t really think about the effect of lighting on the space at all. At the time, I was only interested in finding cheap but stylish pendants to go above the breakfast bar! We lived with the consequences for three years. Pools of harsh ceiling spotlights that made the white cabinets appear blue (and my skin look permanently sickly), moody shadows where I prepped veg, and not nearly enough cosiness when friends poured in after the pub kicked us out.

Now, after years of trial and error, I’ve realised that bad lighting can sabotage even the most beautiful kitchen ideas. It’s not just about what you can see, but how a space feels. For me, it needs to be cosy and calming, especially when I’m cracking out school night dinners at warp speed for the hangry teens. And in my current (hopefully last) kitchen, I think I’ve finally cracked it.

So, if you’ve got a kitchen revamp on the horizon, here are some of the ways you can learn from my earlier mistakes, and light your kitchen like a pro in the know.

1. Plan lighting early

When we built (or rather screwed together) our second kitchen, it wasn’t until after the cabinetry was fitted that I realised I’d woefully underestimated the lighting. I’d given it some thought this time, but clearly not enough.

By then, the walls were plastered and painstakingly painted, and we realised too late that we needed more light over the main prep area and above the sink. Cue frantically ordering stick-on battery lights for the undersides of cabinets and stringing fairy lights along the shelves to add a bit of cosiness. It worked (in a hokey kinda way), but it was a patch-up job, not a thoughtful design decision.

Turns out, lighting really should be mapped out at the same time as the kitchen layout and thought about long and hard. It’s part of the bones of the kitchen, not the accessories list. Patience is not my strong suit. Start with a plan on paper or screen and draw out your layout, clearly marking where the key ‘zones’ are – preparation, cooking, dining and relaxing. Then decide what each zone needs in terms of brightness, focus and atmosphere.

If, like young me, you’ve realised too late that your wiring doesn’t match your needs, there are clever ways to retrofit. Under-cabinet strip lighting can be added without chasing into walls, like these LED lights from Amazon, and modern wireless fittings – such as magnetic puck lights or LED tape with rechargeable batteries – can add much-needed task lighting without any rewiring.

Rechargeable kitchen lamps are a more recent kitchen trend that I would definitely have harnessed to brighten up any gloomy corners, especially since they come in such gorgeous shapes and colours (and if you hadn’t already guessed, I’m all about the aesthetics).

2. Understand how switch circuits work

One of the most confusing things I’ve learned, and the source of endless regret in my third kitchen, is just how much the number (and logic) of lighting circuits affects how you use a room.

I had nearly everything – ceiling spots, pendants, under-cabinet LEDs – wired onto one single circuit, and then a second circuit for lighting on the plinths and inside a couple of glass wall cabinets. I thought I was so clever. But every time I flicked the main switch, I could choose between blindingly bright or pitch darkness; the second switch just made the island look like a spaceship (not in a cool way) and wasn’t even bright enough for safe passage through the space. There was no middle ground, zero flexibility.

A good rule of thumb is to have at least three separate circuits in a kitchen-diner: one for ambient kitchen ceiling light ideas, one for task lighting, and one for mood lighting. That gives you the flexibility to tailor the atmosphere to the time of day or the activity – morning coffee versus evening entertaining, for example.

If you’re thinking about how to plan kitchen lighting from scratch, this is where getting friendly with your electrician pays dividends. Ask them to help map out circuits that make sense ergonomically – switches where you enter the room, near the island, or by the dining area – and to ensure dimmers are compatible with your fittings.

It sounds weird, but not all LED bulbs or fixtures play nicely with dimmer switches, and that’s where the dreaded buzzing or flickering comes from. My electrician loved sharing his knowledge and was really good at explaining why some of my requests weren’t possible (like the almost invisible recessed ceiling lights I wanted, but which wouldn’t fit in the ceiling void on my extension, sad times), as long as I kept the biscuit tin full.

My advice is to always buy your dimmer switches and light fittings together and check compatibility before you pay – with the supplier, or your electrician, or both! Brands often list which bulbs will work smoothly with their dimmers, and it’s worth sticking to that guidance. And if you’re tech-inclined, you can even integrate your circuits into a smart system, but more on that later.

3. Layering light is everything

As any lighting guru with skills will tell you, the best lighting schemes use layers – task, ambient, and accent lighting – that work in harmony to tick every illumination need. One common mistake I made early on was relying too heavily on ceiling spots. They cast downward shadows exactly where I was working, inevitably with my own bushy head blocking the light from reaching the chopping board. I didn’t actually cut my fingers instead of the carrots, but I came close.

An easy way to cover all the bases is to think of it like this:

• Task lighting gives you clarity where you need it – under-cabinet LEDs above your chopping zone, pendants focused directly onto the kitchen island lighting, and perhaps directional spots above the hob (or use the lighting in your cooker hood for the latter).
• Ambient lighting fills the overall space, and usually comes in the form of downlights that bathe the room in even light. Don’t be afraid to position ceiling lights where they’re most needed, rather than lining them up in rigid grids. When they’re off, I promise you won’t notice the lack of symmetry.
• Accent lighting brings the mood. I’m talking wall lights that wash over textured surfaces, LEDs that make glass cabinets sparkle and glow, or hidden strips tucked deep into cabinetry shadowlines. Personally, I won’t be going for the spaceship plinth lighting again.

4. Make sure you get the right bulbs

Even the most beautifully layered scheme can fall flat with the wrong bulbs. I learned this the hard way when I accidentally ordered cool-toned LEDs and wondered why our lovely new kitchen resembled the waiting room at A&E.

Colour temperature, measured in Kelvins (K), makes all the difference. For kitchens, aim for around 2700–3000K for a warm, welcoming feel that still gives you clarity for cooking. Anything higher (4000K or more) starts to feel clinical. Look for a high CRI (Colour Rendering Index) too, ideally 90+, to ensure your food and surfaces look natural. Low CRI lighting can make everything look a bit flat and depressing. These bayonet light bulbs from Amazon are a great example with a 2700K and High CRI.

And don’t forget dimmer controls, I’ve used them for all three lighting circuits in our kitchen. They’re brilliant for tuning brightness throughout the day, dialling the ceiling lights up to full brightness in the mornings when we need to wake up quickly, and then down in the evening when our eyes and brains are tired. They’re especially effective on the pendants above our island and wall lights, which I can get really dim to cast a soft, atmospheric glow in the evenings. Dimmer controls do tend to be a little bit more expensive than regular switches, so you can get away without them on your task lighting circuit (that illuminates prep and hob), which needs to be bright for safety when cooking.

As for smart kitchen lighting ideas, I’m coming around to them, and have invested in individual Smart bulbs by Philips from Amazon for the floor-standing lamps in our kitchen’s soft seating area. They are voice-controlled, via Alexa, which the kids find endlessly entertaining, and I can program them to different scenes, such as ‘reading’ or ‘relaxing’. They are Wi-Fi dependent, so can be a bit glitchy and annoying when our connection wigs out. I might well go for a proper Smart Home integration lighting system in our next kitchen, but hopefully that won’t be for many years to come, in a home with better broadband.

If you’re designing a kitchen in the foreseeable future, don’t underestimate the lighting. It’s not just about sourcing drop-dead gorgeous pendants (although it absolutely is that), but the most functional and enjoyable illumination of your space. The right lighting will bring a kitchen to life.

Get it wrong, and you’ll be dead annoyed, and your complexion will probably look a bit dead, too.

Interior experts have plenty of tricks up their sleeve that the rest of us have never heard of. The latest one I recently stumbled upon is the 30-inch pendant light rule which is a trick industry experts swear by to help them hang these light above a surface like a dining table or a kitchen island at the perfect height.

I came across this (primarily) kitchen and dining room lighting idea last week when reading interior stylist Colin King’s Substack where he nonchalantly mentioned the rule. Having never heard of it, I naturally turned to other interior and lighting experts to brush up on it.

The experts confirmed this trick to be a rule of thumb that many in the industry swear by – which might make the 30-inch pendant rule one of the industry’s best kept secrets. At least up until now.

What is the 30-inch pendant rule?

Similarly to something like the 18-inch rug rule or the 4-inch seating rule (yes, there are many inch-focused interior rules!), the 30-inch pendant light rule also helps with the perfect positioning – this time of the pendant above a surface.

'The 30-inch rule suggests leaving roughly 30 inches between the bottom of the pendant and the surface below it,' succinctly explains James Kendall, operations director at KES Lighting & Home.

‘Most designers use the “30-inch rule” when determining the placement of pendant lights over surfaces such as kitchen islands or dining tables,' agrees says Mara Rypacek Miller, founder of lighting specialists Industville.

'This height ensures fixtures are high enough not to obstruct conversation but low enough to provide adequate task lighting. It also helps the lighting feel integrated, creating proportionality with surrounding elements such as cabinetry or tables.’

Where can you use the rule?

The rule is usually utilised as a kitchen lighting idea above a kitchen island or when placing a pendant light above a dining table. But there are other areas of your home it can come in handy, too.

‘This is particularly popular over dining tables and kitchen islands because it provides a balance, so it’s low enough to illuminate the surface effectively, but high enough to avoid obstructing views or conversation,' explains James.

'While this rule is most commonly applied to dining and kitchen areas, it can also be adapted to other surfaces such as console tables, bedside tables or even workspaces.'

Ally Dowsing-Reynolds, co-founder and lighting expert at Dowsing & Reynolds, elaborates. ‘Desks or home office nooks are also a good space to use this lighting formula as pendant lights offer great task lighting for workstations and the 30-inch drop adds a cosy, zoning effect.'

'Bedside pendants at this length can also work well, hung either side of the bed. Hanging in this way, they work well as a space-saving alternative to table lamps.’

Does the rule apply all the time?

As with any design and/or decorating ‘rule’, it’s best to approach this as more of a guideline or a starting point and go from there, according to the experts.

‘The 30-inch rule isn’t set in stone,' James adds. 'It’s a great starting point, but factors like ceiling height, the size and scale of the pendant and the height of the people using the space should influence the final placement. For example, in rooms with very high ceilings, you may want to increase the drop to maintain proportion and visual balance.'

In the last couple of years, high street brands have really upped their game when it comes to stylish yet affordable lamps and light fixtures. I’m constantly impressed with the likes of H&M lamps and M&S lighting offering. And IKEA is also getting better and better, launching the super chic SPETSBOJ lamp earlier this year, and now the STRÅLA lamp.

‘We are craving a bit of joy in our homes at the moment, and lighting is a safe place to play,’ says Sam Sutherland, Flitch interior stylist. ‘A quirky lamp is like jewellery for your room; it does not have to match everything else, but it instantly lifts the mood and sparks conversation.’
