Just as Pinterest released its autumn 2025 trend report this week, naming ‘Art Deco decor’ as one of the biggest trends of the season ahead, Primark Home is confirming it. The store is expanding its more expensive-looking collection called The Edit with new Art Deco-style homeware.

So it’s official – the Art Deco aesthetic is the latest hot home decor trend that you’ll be seeing a whole lot more of in the next few months. And it starts now with this elevated Primark range with prices starting at just £5.

While the first drop of The Edit had a holiday focus with palm tree motifs, this one is all about the opulence, geometry and gold tones synonymous with the Art Deco style.

What is Art Deco?

‘Art Deco is defined by bold geometry,’ says Chloe Barrow, interior expert at Laura James. ‘Think clean, stylised lines and patterns in symmetry, paired with rich colour palettes including deep browns, emeralds, teals, and navy blues.'

'Gold detailing also plays a key role, often seen in light fittings and decorative accents, while warm champagne-toned lighting keeps the overall Art Deco mood.’

So it’s not surprising that Pinterest searches for ‘Art Deco vintage’ have increased by 805% and ‘New Art Deco’ searches have seen a 497% increase according to the Pinterest 2025 Autumn Report.

‘Every time I open Pinterest, I see more and more people falling in love with Art Deco,’ says Victoria Robinson, style and trend expert at Hillarys. ‘And honestly, I get it! After years of minimalist, neutral interiors, we’re all craving a little more personality and pizzazz in our homes. Art Deco is the answer to that.'

'It’s bold, it’s glamorous, and it instantly makes a space feel special. People want their homes to feel unique and expressive and Art Deco delivers that with its rich materials, gorgeous patterns, and a sense of old-school luxury that just feels so fresh right now. Plus, there’s a real nostalgia factor.’

So if you want to incorporate more Art Deco touches to your home, I’ve included some more of my recommended picks from various brands, along with styling advice from Sienna Brooks, Flitch interior stylist.

Dropping just in time for the new spring season, the collection’s price points start at just £2.50, making it both affordable, and unbelievably on trend. It’s organised into three ranges inspired by a featured trend - Cosy Cottage, Dainty Decor and Minimaluxe.

Here at Ideal Home, Pinterest is one of our first go-tos when searching for inspiration and home decor trends – and this goes for Primark and its team, too, which is how this collab came about.

‘This is the first time Primark is officially launching a Pinterest-inspired new spring home collection,’ says Sinead McDonagh, head of design at Primark. ‘But at Primark, and myself included, like millions of others, we are huge Pinterest fans for home inspiration. I use it personally, and I also use it when I'm researching a new collection for Primark Home.'

Matt Siberry, head of home at Pinterest, adds, ‘From my perspective, this opportunity felt very natural to us and Primark. We see so many millions of people coming to Pinterest every month to find home inspiration and figure out how they want to curate their lives. This partnership was a nice way of bridging that gap to provide inspiration, but also find those budget-friendly prices and that opportunity.’

The collection is available to shop in Primark physical stores, as well as online through both Pinterest and Primark for click and collect.

What are the Pinterest trends that inspired the collection?

The collection is made up of three trends based on Pinterest’s wealth of data as to what its users are searching for. Despite the Pinterest Predicts trend report for 2025 coming out just a few months ago, the featured trends in the Primark collab are in fact not the Pinterest Predicts trends.

‘Pinterest Predicts is our global report, and we have to make sure that takes into account global trends, as well as future-facing,' explains Matt. 'This collection with Primark is very much inspired by a deeper insight to a UK-specific audience, but also more around spring.'

So firstly, we have the very heavily spring-inspired trend called Cosy Cottage, filled with romantic floral motifs, pastels, frills and even ladybirds, all referencing the popular cottagecore trend. This trend is based on Pinterest searches for terms like ‘cosy cottage bedroom’ which has seen a 170% increase and ‘modern cottage living room’ with a 100% rise in searches.

Then, there is the dopamine decor-filled and super playful, feminine Dainty Decor trend: think all things pink, with a healthy dose of bows, cherries and cakes (in cushion form). This trend is the result of searches around ‘whimsical bedroom’ with a 130% rise, ‘pink bow’ with 160% increase and ‘girly bathroom’ that’s searched 95% more now than three months ago.

And lastly, the more grown-up Minimaluxe champions a pared-back, sophisticated aesthetic injected with earthy tones that are dominating bedroom and living room trends this year as Pinterest searches for ‘earthy colour palette’ and ‘cream and beige bedroom’ have both seen a 120% rise, while ‘luxury living room’ searches have increased by 115%.

But even though the collection is not directly based on the Pinterest Predicts trends, you can definitely find some references to them in the new range.

‘One of the big Pinterest Predicts trends in home this year is Primary Play, which is all about bold colours and playful design. And in terms of Cosy Cottage, if you look at the collection, it does have these vibrant and whimsical home pieces and patterns in it,’ Matt at Pinterest says.

Which pieces are predicted to sell out first?

With homeware pieces spanning everything from cute tableware to cosy bedding and even bathroom accessories, the collection covers almost all the possible bases.

If you have your sight set on some specific pieces, I recommend snapping them up as soon as possible – as many are pretty much guaranteed to sell out fast. All of the chic bedding is expected to sell out first, especially the toile de jouy bedding. In addition to that, these are the predicted bestsellers according to Sinead at Primark.

You don’t even have to restrict yourself by sticking to only one trend as both Matt and Sinead say they lend themselves perfectly to mixing and matching. And if you’re not quite sure whether some of your favourite pieces will work well together, you can use the new Pinterest Collages tool – it also gives you the chance to win a £500 voucher if you use even just one product from this collection in your collage.

Which Primark x Pinterest pieces will you definitely be snapping up?

During the drab, grey colder months, who can blame us for looking for ways to inject a bit of perennial sunshine into our living spaces? And many of us seem to be dreaming of blue skies and roaming in the French countryside, as over on Pinterest, French Blue is proving to be the kitchen colour trend of the moment.

French Blue is a mid-tone blue – softer than the deep navy blue kitchen ideas popular a few years ago. It douses any space with a sense of tranquillity, offering a transformative alternative to white and other neutrals.

The name French Blue refers to a specific Edward Bulmer shade, which ‘for some time now has received some of the highest organic search impressions out of all of our colours, even our best-selling pinks,’ says Lena Dahnsjo, Edward Bulmer's in-house colour consultant.

And while the colour is enjoying a spike in popularity, experts explain that it’s been a long time coming, and perhaps a reflection of our collective desire for sunnier climes.

'This French Blue Kitchen colour trend hasn’t come out of nowhere, we’re all waiting for sunnier days, starting to dream of holidays,’ says Marianne Shillingford, creative director and colour expert at Dulux.

‘French Blue reminds us of that home away from home feeling without being an unrealistically bright blue sky as the grey undertone keeps it real,’ Marianne adds.

An incredibly versatile shade, French Blue can be easily incorporated into your kitchen in a number of ways, no matter how many miles your home is from a French chateau.

What is French Blue?

The OG Edward Bulmer paint colour was inspired by the cloth used for French infantryman’s uniform.

‘Our colour is not as strong as the newly dyed fabric, but it has the same clarity and is what the original fabric would have faded to after a short time in the sun,’ says Edward Bulmer, interior designer and founder of the eponymous paint company. ‘It is indeed the colour of a cloudless sky and has a joyous demeanour.’

It’s this reference to the past, while still feeling fresh and contemporary, which perhaps makes the shade so popular.

‘French blue strikes the balance between playful and timeless and I’ve definitely seen more clients asking for softer, heritage-inspired blues, particularly for cabinetry and woodwork,’ says Harriet Slaughter, a creative colour consultant.

While the name of the trend refers to a specific Edward Bulmer paint, there are also a number of similar alternatives available, with subtle tonal differences. Coastal Grey by Dulux and Pompadour by Craig & Rose are similarly serene shades. Or, Selvedge by Farrow & Ball is a ‘slightly greyer blue than French Blue but is a little more relaxed, and still really very blue,’ says Harriet.

How to use French Blue in your kitchen

There are many ways to incorporate French Blue into your kitchen, whether by dousing your walls in this calming tone, or introducing blue accents to your cabinetry,

The range of tones within this shade of blue allow it to take on totally distinct qualities when used in different parts of your kitchen. Depending on the light the paint receives, ‘it can change from a hazy grey-blue to a vibrant classic mid-blue, all equally beautiful,’ says Lena Dahnsjo, Edward Bulmer’s in-house colour consultant.

This makes it a great shade to colour-drench your room with or try it painted on just the woodwork and cabinetry.

‘Unlike deep navies like Hague Blue, which feel moodier and more dramatic, French Blue has an airier, slightly dustier quality,’ says Harriet. Pairing French Blue-painted cabinetry with neutral walls creates enough visual interest without drawing dramatic contrasts between the different elements of your kitchen, ‘which creates a slightly more relaxed feel,’ she adds.

French Blue pairs neatly with a wide range of colours, textures and kitchen materials. Matching the mid-tone shade with neutrals is especially effective, bringing out the best in both.

‘Using France as my inspiration, I’d complement the cabinets with a neutral on the walls and ceiling to give the kitchen a more elevated and sophisticated design – exactly what you’d want in a holiday home,’ says Marianne Shillingford, creative director and colour expert at Dulux.

Thanks to its nod to the colour’s historical past, French blue also blends seamlessly into the other big kitchen trend of the moment, shaker-style kitchen ideas.

When it comes to choosing the other kitchen materials to pair with French blue, ‘it is excellent with warm wood tones,’ advises Harriet. ‘Think reclaimed Iroko worktops, but also natural oak. Marble looks clean and classic, especially when it is honed.’

‘French Blue would look equally at home with carrara marble or creamy worktops for a crisp, clean look or darker stone for a moodier effect,’ agrees Lena.

In terms of hardware, the cooler edge to this blue pairs well with brass, which will add warmth to your kitchen. Brass also ages in a way that’ll add character to this traditional-inspired tone. If you’re using French blue in a shaker-style kitchen, using cup handles throughout the space will also help to tie the period feel of the design together.

Rich cherry red is an upcoming interiors trend you need to be aware of for the New Year according to the Pinterest Predicts 2025 report.

New year, new you? What better way to reinvent yourself than by incorporating a hot colour trend into your home? There’s no denying rich and glossy cherry red shades have made a statement in the fashion world this year and it seems this sultry trend is making headway in the interior world, too, as Pinterest reported searches for ‘dark cherry red’ were up 235% this year.

But why is cherry red making waves? ‘Even in small doses, cherry red is a great statement colour. Be brave and rebel against decorating rules. It takes confidence to ‘paint outside of the lines’, but it’s one of the easiest ways to make an impressive impact in an otherwise uninspiring space,’ says Helen Shaw, Director of Marketing (International) at Benjamin Moore.

It may be a brave colour, but cherry red pairs well with neutrals such as warm creams and greys, making the hue an excellent choice for adding vibrancy to your kitchen or living room ideas without overwhelming a space.

‘Cherry red is a dynamic colour, so it’s great for adding luxury and warmth to a space. It’s the perfect counterfoil to neutrals like grey, tan or cream and is beautifully complemented by azure blue, green or orange for a more vibrant room. When used sparingly, it gives depth to a restrained scheme and when used with confidence, it evokes decadence and indulgence,’ says award-winning interior designer Ann Marie Cousins, owner of AMC Design.

How to style cherry red

The colour is indulgent and sociable - think red wine or your deepest lipstick shade. Because of this, it’s a colour best suited to busy spaces like your kitchen or living room.

‘The best way to use cherry red is to go all in, think of a gentlemen’s club, a 1920s speakeasy or a private members’ bar. Create an indulgent haven in your sitting room that is the perfect refuge after a busy week,' says Ann Marie from AMC designs.

'This is where colour drenching or double drenching comes into its own. Pair this luxe colour with warm metals, like gold and brass as well as mirrored finishes, in addition to a range of textures and patterns for visual interest.'

Helen from Benjamin Moore also suggests using: ‘masking tape to play with angles and introduce unexpected geometry to a corner, creating your own modern take on coving in a fearless, eye-catching colour such as red. Pair with furniture and accessories in the same shade to lock the scheme together.' This is a playful paint idea for a room that doesn't involve a full-colour scheme change.

‘Alternatively, a statement wall is a great way to introduce red to your home before committing to a full room, which may seem overwhelming if it is your first time using red.’

You may have heard that there’s a new interior trend that’s going viral for its wholesome and nostalgic qualities – it’s the Nancy Meyers trend. Inspired by the home style seen in some of the best rom-coms from the 90s and early 2000s, the home decor trend is named after the filmmaker Nancy Meyers who’s written, produced and directed these beloved movies, which include The Holiday, Something’s Gotta Give, The Parent Trap and Father of the Bride, among many others.

Similarly to pastel eclectic decor, the rise of this trend was first reported by Pinterest in its Summer Trends Report, which outlined ‘Nancy Meyers core’ as the biggest interiors trend of the season as searches on the platform for ‘Nancy Meyers living room’ have increased by 2090% and ‘Nancy Meyers homes’ have risen by 2055% compared to this time last year.

Many are clearly searching for both shots of the actual interiors from the films, but also inspiration for how to recreate the Nancy Meyers aesthetic defined by its elegance paired with a cosy feel in their own space. That’s why we spoke to several interior experts to share some tips on how to incorporate the look into our homes and what are some of the key pieces to decorate with.

Nancy Meyers interiors trend

‘On Pinterest, people are searching for all types of Nancy Meyers-inspired rooms, heading to the platform for guidance on how to successfully style and shop for pieces to create the perfect summer hosting look at home,’ comments Matt Siberry, head of home at Pinterest UK, as among the top searches were also ‘Nancy Meyers bedroom’ with a search increase of 1505% and ‘Nancy Meyers kitchen’ rising by 620% in search volume.

But if you’re still not sure what exactly the Nancy Meyers interiors style is, Alex Stubbs, Flitch interior stylist, breaks it down perfectly. ‘Nancy Meyers' interior style is elegant, cosy, and timeless, characterised by neutral colour palettes, layered textures, and a blend of classic and contemporary furnishings. Her spaces prioritise functional elegance, ensuring they are both beautiful and practical, with thoughtful accessories and curated decor adding personality and charm.’

Victoria Foster, interior stylist at ScS, continues, ‘There is a casual yet luxury feel to each room and a familiar warmth in her style. Her signature colour palette is neutral and crisp with beiges, whites and black and she adds touches of colour and personality through accessories.’

Some compare the look to the coastal grandma trend which was a popular home decor style a couple of years ago. And while there are overlaps, there are also distinctions between the two.

‘While both trends share comfort, elegance, and neutral palettes, Meyers' style is more polished and sophisticated, blending modern and traditional elements. In contrast, the coastal grandma trend is relaxed and casual with coastal motifs. Additionally, Meyers' interiors feature high-end finishes and curated art, while coastal grandma style favours rustic, beach-inspired decor,’ Alex explains.

Why is the Nancy Meyers aesthetic popular now?

You might be wondering why this interior style reference is becoming so popular right now, considering that Nancy Meyers hasn’t released a new film in years. And we wouldn’t blame you if you were. But our experts have an answer for this, too.

‘Meyers’ iconic rom coms remain some of the most favoured in the genre. The era of her films may offer some nostalgia for those who watched in their adolescent years and are now homeowners who want to recreate the look,’ Victoria says.

She adds, ‘The popularity with her style might also be attributed to the ‘quiet luxury’ trend that has recently taken off in both fashion and interiors. Her protagonists are often affluent and live in sophisticated, comfortable yet minimalist homes which fit this trend perfectly.’

Matt from Pinterest UK thinks it’s due to the timelessness and storytelling seen in the films’ homes. ‘I think the popularity of Nancy Meyers’ inspired interiors is that they seem to tell a story. Whether it’s through vintage vases or treasured coffee tables, the trend infuses nostalgia and charm into interior spaces, creating a space that feels uniquely individual.’

How to incorporate Nancy Meyers core into your home

When recreating the Nancy Meyers aesthetic at home, start with the signature colour palette.

‘To achieve the look, start with a neutral palette of whites, creams, and soft greys, and incorporate layered textures with throws, pillows, and rugs,’ Alex advises.

Victoria agrees, ‘The key piece for incorporating her look into the home is an oversized rug. Her living rooms feature intimate seating set ups, with sofas and armchairs carefully positioned to encourage conversation and this is zoned by placing a large vintage style rug that fills the space. Often there is also a plush footstool placed in the centre of this space too, which brings in comfort and style.’

As previously mentioned, it’s all about quiet yet cosy luxury vibes. So bold patterns are not very common - except for one and that’s the timeless striped motif seen on accessories and soft furnishings.

‘A common pattern used in her interiors is a bold stripe, usually in navy and white, which is a trend that we’re seeing more of this year. Adding striped accessories like cushions, throws or rugs into your interiors adds interest whilst maintaining clean and sleek lines,’ Victoria says.

Vintage-style vases and classic coffee tables are great ways to incorporate the Nancy Meyers look into your home, as Matt already mentioned. But there are other elements you can opt for. ‘Choose timeless furniture with clean lines, blend in contemporary pieces, and add personal touches with curated art. Finally, use warm, ambient lighting to create a cosy, inviting atmosphere,’ Alex says.

As far as cooking spaces go, shaker kitchens are the most common style to see in a Nancy Meyers rom com. ‘She tends to opt for shaker-style kitchens which are timeless and give a clean look to the space. If you’re able to, switching out your cupboard doors for this style can instantly give this kind of look,’ Victoria suggests.

I love Christmas. Some might even say I’m a little obsessed, but in my opinion the sooner the Christmas decoration ideas go up and the jingles start playing, the better. It’s a moment when people embrace the festive spirit, and to me there’s no better feeling than the sense of togetherness it brings. 

Believe it or not, Pinterest users start looking for ways to transform their homes into Christmas grottoes as early as July, and this year searches for nutcrackers, candy canes and other classic Christmas decorations are soaring. Nostalgia is making a comeback in 2023, as people reflect on and take inspiration from Christmases of times past to dress their homes.

There’s no doubt that we’re all searching for ways to cut costs, while also being mindful of superfluous shopping and waste. Embracing nostalgia is the perfect way to keep costs down, while not missing out on the magic of the festive season. Every year I’m tempted to buy a whole new set of decorations to suit my colour scheme or theme, but this year it’s all about being more resourceful with budget christmas ideas and using what we already own (which also adds a vintage flair). 

So dust off your box of old baubles – I think there’s something really wonderful in using decorations that evoke memories of Christmas with your family. We’re also seeing increased searches on Pinterest for vintage and upcycled ornaments. This year, give your treasured baubles a new lease of life with prime position on the tree, repair or repurpose old decorations, or simply make more thoughtful purchases if buying new. 

1. Deep reds and emerald greens

You can’t think of Christmas without the colours of holly and Santa himself popping into your head. The one shade of red that is taking over this year as a key christmas colour scheme is burgundy. The deep, dark “ green scheme A rich red and ” conjures up a deep sense of tradition Homespun decs are ideal for the nostalgic trend jewel-like tone oozes luxury and heritage and is a subtle alternative to the bright reds we’ve been seeing in recent years. 

Green pairs perfectly with burgundy and the two colours combined really do evoke the spirit of a nostalgic Christmas. The fir green of the tree complements the dark red shade, and one of my favourite ways to decorate the tree is adding poinsettias and sprigs of berries.

Similarly, get creative with wreath ideas and add your own burgundy bows, berries and flowers. Deep greens and reds are especially effective in the living room and help to create a cosy ambience when thoughtfully lit in the evenings. 

2. Weird & wonderful ornaments

This year, don’t worry about perfectly matched decorations as mismatched ornaments are a key Christmas tree trend. This look really lends itself to using your old favourites and embracing those decorations that hold special stories and memories. 

Over the past year, we’ve seen the rise of mushroom décor and this shows no sign of stopping for the festive season. Toadstools are everywhere, particularly in the form of baubles, so expect to see trees decked from head-to-toe in fungi. Other woodland-inspired decorations – reindeer, pine cones and even hedgehogs and foxes – are set to make their way into our living spaces, too. 

3. Scandi-inspired look

The maximalist, mismatched décor isn’t for everyone, so if you’re looking for a more pared-back Christmas display, Scandi style is perfect. Stick to muted tones such as white, neutrals and greys and if you do opt for colour, keep it close to shades you see in nature. I love decorating my Christmas dinner table with pine cones, berries and other finds from my garden. You can even bring in branches and use them to hang decorations and delicate fairy lights. 

Handcrafted wooden decorations are a staple of any Scandi-inspired Christmas, where craftsmanship is at the core. Scandinavian Christmas is all about tradition and every year decorations that are passed down through generations are showcased in all their glory on the tree. 

No matter which décor route you choose to go down this Christmas, dressing your home and decking the halls is a key part of festivities and the perfect opportunity for family and friends to come together and celebrate. I can’t wait to get my winter wonderland ready.

If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a thousand times - multi-functional furniture is key when it comes to storage for small spaces. I’ve recently indulged in a new ottoman that has a lift up top, serving as the perfect hiding place for a blanket when it gets cold, and past editions of my favourite magazines, which I’m determined not to throw away. After my own heart, searches for ottoman beds are increasing on Pinterest, the perfect place to store your winter jackets, which are no doubt set to make a reappearance soon.

2. Make a statement

In saying that, if you’re after a maximalist home full of pizazz and visual appeal, storage isn’t out of your reach. Open shelving ideas offer a neat way to display and organise items, while still retaining a sense of openness to the space. Whether it’s functional kitchenware or even more decorative items such as books or souvenirs, open shelving allows you to display an array of items proudly. However, decoration can quickly become clutter, no matter how intentional it might start off as, so keep it focused, Remember, more doesn’t always mean more interesting!

Similarly, storage units have evolved from just being practical items, now having the ability to make design statements. A wish on everyone’s dream home list, we couldn’t talk about storage without talking about pantries. Whether consisting of just a drawer and cabinet or a completely separate room, pantries can be the ultimate blend of organisation and aesthetics. So much so, there’s now even specific pantry organisation systems, enabling you to optimise the space your cupboard goods take up. Whether that’s labelled storage bins, baskets and containers, or even lazy Susans (The Style Sisters' must-have kitchen storage essential), plus tiered shelving to maximise accessibility and visibility.

4. Kid chaos

And while you might have your own storage under control, it might be possible your kids add to the disorder in your home! Think of kid-friendly solutions at the right height, as that way they’ll feel involved in the organisation process, and soon you might find them even tidying up after you!

Cube storage units and toy chests are ideal for storing toys and stuffed animals of all different shapes and sizes, providing not only a quick way to make sure everything is put away, but giving an organised aesthetic once the lid is back on.

We’re also seeing a growing trend where technology and smart home ideas are integral to storage solutions and where form meets functionality. Potentially the future of storage - automation, smart devices and voice controls, can be extremely convenient and efficient. Samsung has led the way with its screen-fronted fridge, which allows you to track and see what’s inside without having to even open the door.

• Install lighting in cupboards and wardrobes and LED strips under shelves for kitchen lighting to give ample illumination to the area without taking up any space.
• When storing items, labelling is your friend, and using pictures of the items help make identifying where each item is meant to belong so much easier.
• Make use of otherwise redundant areas of your home - alcoves, eaves and under stairs - these are perfect spots for stashing stuff. 

Being inside my home is a sanctuary, but there’s something special about the outdoors, especially if it’s your own space. Friends or families all gathered round, trays of freshly made drinks, finger food, pets running wild, bees, flowers… I can easily get carried away. 

I think the reason we, the British public, love the idea of outdoor living so much, is because we’ve traditionally done so little of it! However I think the last few years pushed us to embrace our garden ideas more, and be outside come rain or shine. 

Pinners (Pinterest users) are continuing to get creative, saving ideas for decking projects, multi-functional fire pits and decorative rain chains (more on this later) to their Pinterest boards. So, as we’ve spent this year hosting people at home to keep costs down, it’s time to continue doing the same outdoors.

Zoning out

One of the biggest garden trends we've been seeing is people looking to create outdoor spaces that can be used for a variety of activities. And the easiest way to do it is to divide it into different zones! 

Whether that’s through a clear separation between pebbles and grass, or a heavier beam delimiting the area, doing this can help your outdoor space feel bigger, with each area having their own functionality and mood. 

That said, if space isn’t on your side, multifunctional furniture will help automatically create separate zones in a quick flip or cover. Look for furniture with hidden storage compartments, helping you keep your outdoor space tidy, hiding away those throw pillows, outdoor rugs and blankets when it’s raining, but also making them easily accessible as the sun starts to set and a night breeze sets in. 

Nature within nature

Why ruin the outdoors with synthetic and man-made materials? Pinterest search data shows people are increasingly searching and saving natural garden ideas, incorporating elements such as stone, wood and natural water features into their outdoor areas. 

Not only do these create a peaceful and relaxing environment, allowing you to truly connect with nature, but they also promote biodiversity for local flora and wildlife. 

Water conservation projects are also booming on Pinterest boards. This is something we predicted in our future-gazing Pinterest Predicts report at the start of the year, and one of my favourite trends. The Rainscape trend sees people investing in interesting ways to harvest rainwater via architecturally-aware designs, whether it’s through terraformation of their garden, a rain chain, or simply water barrels.  

Modern living in the wild

While a nice escape at times, it’s okay to integrate tech into your outdoor space. Whether that’s outdoor speakers, a wi-fi extension or even a projector, they’ll allow you to enjoy modern living in the wild. 

Garden lighting systems will not only extend your time outdoors, especially as days get shorter, but also help amplify the space and make it more inviting. Use of string lights, lanterns, or even spotlights can help highlight different areas, and create a warm and inviting atmosphere. 

Smart design

Interior rules very much apply to the exterior, too - there’s no need to treat it as a completely different beast. Use light colours, such as white or pastels to make your space feel larger, with pops of colours through your accessories or planters to add visual interest without overwhelming the space. 

Similar to lighting, garden mirrors help make it feel like there’s more space than meets the eye. I could go on about them for a while, alongside the different shapes, depths and colours! Reflecting the surrounding area - place them strategically in your outdoor space, whether against a wall or a fence to double up the illusion of the outdoors.

Better together

While Pinners have also been looking to the front of our homes as an alternative to back gardens, it’s also time to celebrate the communal outdoor space. Since the start of 2023, we’ve seen searches for ideas related to community gardens and allotments increase hugely on Pinterest. 

While their function still remains focused on produce, we’re seeing people purchase long tables, benches and fire pits to enjoy and share everything that’s grown from the nearby soil, as part of their modern allotment redesigns. 

Hosting and living outside offers a different dynamic, making it feel more special than indoors while also allowing you to keep costs down when getting together. So bring out your blankets and tealight lanterns, because living outdoors is year-round!

Planning a room makeover can be a therapeutic process, whether you're looking for calm bedroom ideas or want to include one of the new wallpaper trends for 2023. However, if that's as far as you get – saving inspirational images and envisaging your ideal room – you may want to take a leaf out of this homeowner's book. 

Not only did this mum of two cut costs and turn her dream scheme into reality, but she also learnt some new DIY skills along the way.

Tranquil bedroom makeover

Danielle Love from Preesall, Lancashire, had wanted a green bedroom for quite some time, but had put off doing her own room as there were always other rooms in the house that needed work. 

‘I'd been looking on Pinterest and had seen a few different items I liked,' she told money-saving community LatestDeals.co.uk. 'I gravitated towards green, and I have a light grey bed. That was the colour scheme I ended up working with, and I based the project on this palette with the aim of creating a calming vibe.'

Before

Grey walls and grey carpet had lasted Danielle well, but she was keen to create a more serene look by introducing some restful greens along with botanical pattern.

After

The new-look bedroom is a beautiful botanical haven for the busy mum to retreat to, with a statement mural and deep green bedding – but how did Danielle manage to keep costs down?

‘The biggest piece I bought for the project was a mural called Foggy Nature from a site called Bimago,' she says. 'It cost me about £100 and I wanted it to cover the entire wall behind my bed. The pattern features the same tones of green that I wanted to apply to my walls and decor. 

'The flowers and leaves cascade down the wall and create a lovely relaxing ambience,' she continues. 'The best bit is that you can get the mural in many different sizes, so those on tighter budgets wanting a smaller mural can pay as little as £20.'

Danielle even had a go at doing some of the decorating herself. ‘It would have cost over £100 to get a painter in to do the job professionally,' she says, 'and since I love doing DIY, paying someone seemed silly. Painting the green walls was the most time-consuming part of the project as it took about three coats, but I’ve had plenty of compliments from people when they see the finished result.'

'The paint was mixed from B&Q’s own range and the shade is called Sea Turtle. I got three tubs for the price of two thanks to a special offer, so the final price worked out at about £26 for a five-litre tub.'

When it came to putting the mural up, Danielle entrusted the process to someone else. 'My mum’s partner completed this step because I didn’t want to mess it up,' she says. 'It was pretty straightforward as it came numbered – it almost got put up upside down, but we got there in the end.  I think that was the only challenge we faced, really – which way the paper goes up!'

The green bedding came from Dunelm, while the cushions were from B&M Stores and cost just £10 each, and the bedside cabinets were a bargain £37.50 each from Amazon.

‘After that, it was just finishing touches, which is the fun part,' says Danielle. 'I'm so pleased with how the project has turned out. I’m just waiting on some wall art now to finish it off.' 

Growing up, one of my most vivid memories of kitchens was not having one. After moving into a kitchenless house, my mother, who worked a full-time job while taking care of my two brothers and I, didn’t have the resources or time to quickly whip up a new kitchen. So two pieces of equipment became the staple of the makeshift room - a Sunbeam electric frying pan from the 1950’s, and a three-tier electric steamer. 

The electric frying pan was the more peculiar of the two, and it wouldn’t go amiss in a museum now, but all that mattered to my brothers and I was that eggs and bacon could be cooked. In those moments, it wasn’t the intricacies of the kitchen’s aesthetic design which made it enjoyable, but the experience of cooking food together. 

What I’ve come to realise is that kitchens are so many things beyond simply a place where food is made - they take on a bigger meaning depending on the person who inhabits them. They’re a place for creativity, self-expression and a space to connect with family or friends. And in my life so far, kitchens have been all of the above and more, but mainly a destination for community and shared experiences.  

So while the kitchen has been traditionally associated with family, I’m enjoying seeing people’s desire for the kitchen trends of 2023 to be a social space to welcome friends and people of all ages. Explicitly expressed through design and decor choices, and even the food cooked within it. 

Pinterest's top kitchen trends 

Countertop comeback

Open plan rooms are the result of a push to create a blended social space, but that’s also led to people sacrificing countertop space in the kitchen for floor space. 

Countertops are not only a good spot for our ever-growing reliance on kitchen gadgets, with ‘air fryer’ searches on Pinterest close to tripling in the last six months*, but also a key element to making it easier for people to perch and socialise. Especially if you’re cooking a meal worthy of praise. 

Across the platform we’re seeing kitchen island ideas trending alongside transoms or ‘kitchen windows’ as people look to break up the space between the kitchen and the living room without losing the ability to speak while cooking. 

It’s easy to think of kitchen islands as being nostalgic, especially with sitcom families rushing off and grabbing a piece of toast from them before leaving the house. But these can be updated by building them in geometrical shapes, incorporating sinks and hidden plug points for swapping about those extra appliances, and having design-led pendant lights hanging over them.  

All-out tablescaping

DIY tables have increased as a trend, allowing people to do more even if they have less space. Folding tables, tuck away chairs, or even extendable tables for when those extra guests come round are all growing in popularity for the space-conscious. 

But even if the size isn’t there, people are pulling out all the stops,with tablescaping becoming a hobby for many hosts and making mealtimes a bigger event. Financial pressures are leading people to have more events at home, whether it’s birthday parties or baby showers, so bringing the restaurant and all the elements that come with it to your own abode, helps make that gathering a little bit more special. 

To avoid waste, the likes of vintage candles, early 20th century crystal glasses and even compostable flowers and foliage are all present in tablescaping’s most popular Pins, being used to accent and complement the kitchen and the food on the plates. 

Colourful cupboards

 Even the way we’re decorating our kitchens reflects this desire for it to be seen as a place where people relish spending time in. Seeing the self-expression which takes place across the home is making its way to the kitchen walls. Across design choices, monochrome minimalism is taking a back seat, with all white furnishings being swapped for bolder colours. 

Just like our colourful plates of food, on Pinterest, we’ve specifically seen a search increase for ‘deep blue kitchens’ alongside a spike in ‘dark green kitchen ideas’.* And to avoid it feeling too enclosed, we’re also seeing an uplift in brass and gold cabinet door knobs and handles to help brighten, darker furnishings. 

Good food is meant for sharing

My partner at the time and I embarked on the terrifying experience of ripping out a kitchen and the exhilarating experience of putting in a new one. What helped shape our space was my ex-partner’s mother, who due to her Caribbean heritage showed fountains of love through her cooking and the kitchen in which she hosted everyone.

Cooking and kitchens are intrinsic to one another, each of them influencing the other, and lastly this desire to be social can be seen in the dishes and drinks that people are concocting in the kitchen.

Searches for ‘dinner party ideas’ have remained smoothly high across the platform in the past year, with ‘graze boards’ also booming for those looking to share snacks for more than one.* The hope to host is clear in the rise of DIY cocktails, which were popularised when we couldn’t cheer with others, but has only become more popular as we’re seeing people again. 

Kitchens are truly re-establishing themselves as the heart (as well as stomach) of the home. They’ve evolved from being a utilitarian room, which many wanted to spend the least amount of time in, to a space which is multi-functional - to host, cook and wine and dine guests. And what we’re seeing is design decisions are no longer just personal preference, but also accommodating to make welcoming others into the home easier. 

My mother did eventually renovate our non-kitchen kitchen, getting rid of the loyal pan and steamer, replacing it with a brilliant Rangemaster oven. But despite the swapping of utilities, the feeling of communion for family remains, something I’ve tried to recreate (even copying the same model of Rangemaster for my own kitchen).

It might still be pretty chilly outside, but many of us are already thinking ahead to warmer days spent in our outdoor spaces. And according to recent predictions from Pinterest, we're all going to be utilising our gardens, terraces and balconies in a fun new way come the warmer months – inspired by our growing desire to be more sustainable.

The social media site has predicted that one of the biggest gardening ideas for 2023 will be the idea of 'rain harvesting' – or 'rainscapes', as they are naming it. 

The predicted trend centres around the idea of collecting rainwater in order to be more eco-friendly. Pinterest explained, 'People have realized that reducing their ecological footprint and maintaining a luxe home aesthetic doesn’t have to be mutually exclusive. They're embracing the beauty and elegance of natural materials while safeguarding their spaces against droughts and other natural disasters.'

What is rain harvesting – and why will it be big this year?

Rain harvesting is, essentially, the collection and storage of rain water. As opposed to allowing the rain to wash away, you can use certain tools to store it for use around your home and your outdoor spaces. And Pinterest predict that we'll all be doing it over the next 12 months.

Wayfair's Resident Trend Advisor, Nadia McCowan Hill, said, 'According to Pinterest Predicts, Boomers and Gen X will be investing in rain harvesting [in 2023].

'A simple addition to make your home more efficient – if you have outdoor space – is to invest in a rain barrel or water butt. They can help you to save water and reduce your energy bills. There are a number of shapes and designs, from compact ones for smaller gardens to large-scale heavy-duty barrels to maximise water-saving.'

They can be particularly useful in the summer, allowing you to forego a hose or water from your tap to water your garden, or as part of your lawn care. The water collected can also be used for cleaning cars, cleaning gutters, or the outside of your home generally – both reducing water usage and the cost of your energy bills.

And it seems people really are intrigued by the idea of rain harvesting; searches on Pinterest for 'Rain water harvesting architecture' were up 155% in the last few months, and searches for 'Rain barrels ideas beautiful' up by 100%.

In fact, we reckon it's pretty safe to assume that rain harvesting will see a rise in prominence over the next year – 80% of the 'Pinterest Predicts' report predictions came true in the last three years, making it a great indicator of our wider interests as a society.

Not only are rain barrels or water butts a good choice, but rain chains can also be a great garden tool too. Rain chains are vertical chains of containers (or watering cans), that can be suspended from the sides of buildings, in order to collect rainwater and divert it away from the home. They can also be helpful in collecting rainwater for your garden, too.

And they're also very aesthetically pleasing – lots of people love the soft noise a rain chain makes, and they make for a pretty, rustic decoration for your house exterior.
