Ikea’s Billy bookcase just got a whole lot brighter

Long a storage staple, the Billy bookcase boasts some brand-new looks for 2013

Never a company to sit on its laurels, Ikea has been busy updating some of its most popular products, including the Billy bookcase.

First designed in 1979, the unit has evolved and changed to accommodate the ever-growing number of household items that need to be stowed away or proudly displayed.

Different colours and textures have been gradually introduced over the years, but now Ikea has boldly leapt into the future with three startling additions to the range.

White on the outside and on the shelf edges, the designs are coloured using a foil finish in either this striking aquamarine blue, a vivacious orange (both designed by Gillis Lundgren), or a black-and-white print with a wallpaper-style image of books opened like fans (designed by Susanna Löfgren).

Each available as a limited edition from February, the Billy bookcases are all sized W80 x D28 x H202cm and priced at a very reasonable £45.

Somehow we expect the queues down at your local Ikea store will get rather longer, but buying one of these beauties will certainly be worth the wait.
