  • Designer Esther Patterson is one of the featured artists at the Hayward’s stunning Light Show.

There may be many bright sparks in the interior design world, but we think Esther Patterson is a supernova when it comes to the stellar world of bespoke lighting.

Founder of Curiousa & Curiousa, Esther designs glass and bone-china lighting, all of which is made by skilled craftspeople here in the UK. Since she launched her first collection in 2010, Esther has seen her extraordinary light fittings displayed in Harvey Nichols, Jamie Oliver’s restaurants and sold to the public through Liberty.

Going from strength to strength, she is now one of 22 artists selected by the Hayward Gallery as part of its Light Show exhibition, running from 30 January to 28 April. Asked to design a specific piece for the show, Esther came up with an unusual set of influences, as she explains: ‘I took inspiration from my fascination with Asian and Moroccan finials and came up with this idea for a glass stack. It’s one of a triptych – and I’m really pleased with them,’ says Esther.

As well as showing in the exhibition, some of Esther’s designs, including tableware, table lamps and pendants, will also be available in the Hayward Gallery’s shop, so there’s no excuse not to brighten up your home with some smart new accessories. We certainly will…
