Vintage style in 5 easy steps

Lend your home a relaxed country look with a few straightforward finishing touches

1. Put up some open storage Lend your kitchen some vintage style by fixing up a plate rack between wall cabinets. You can often find them at car boot sales or vintage fairs. Add a row of neat hooks to display your favourite mugs, too.

2. Make a feature of linens
Give a boring utility area some vintage flavour by hiding your washing machine behind a fabric curtain in a classic ticking stripe.

3. Give painted furniture a distressed finish Rub down a painted armoire or a chest of drawers with sand paper (or use an electric sander) to give it that timeworn finish.

4. Dress windows with lace A simple way to give your bedroom a more vintage vibe in an instant is to hang up a single lace panel at the window to diffuse light. Keep the look simple by fitting a plain blackout roller blind behind the voile to shut out the early-morning sunlight.

5. Add some French style The shabby chic look works wonderfully alongside French-inspired pieces of furniture. Look out for mirrors with ornate frames and swap out a modern bedside table for a Louis XV-style dressing table.
