The late great Larry Hagman may have infuriated y'all as womanising oil tycoon, JR Ewing, but in real life the late actor turned his Ojai home into a caring sharing eco haven
Actor Larry Hagman made his name playing irreverent oil baron JR Ewing and it’s fair to say that the ecological impact of JR’s thirst for black gold on the Texan countryside probably never entered his Stetson-wearing head. Poor old Miss Ellie…
In real life, however, Hagman was passionate about alternative energy sources and the California home he shared with his wife, Maj, affectionately named ‘Heaven’, became something of a model for eco-friendly living.
Built in the 1990s, the couple’s Tuscan-style home is the largest solar-powered residence in the US, following the installation of £450,000 state-of-the-art German solar panels, and produces enough electricity to power the entire estate with enough left over to sell back to the energy company.
Bobby would be so proud!
According to TopTenRealEstateDeals.com, the 42-acre estate is also self-sustaining with 32 acres given over to olive, grapefruit, lime, orange and avocado trees in addition to vegetables and the odd, ahem, chicken!
But don’t worry, Hagman, like his famous alter ego JR, still had a taste for the finer things in life. The property boasts nine en-suite bedrooms with floor-to-ceiling windows, three swimming pools, a spa, separate living quarters for staff and unrivalled cliff-top views of the ocean and surrounding Ventura Valley.
And if you fancy getting your own little slice of ‘Heaven’, around £4 million should do it.
