We hear about 'fast fashion' all the time and how we can help our planet simply by making less impulsive buys, but it's not only clothing this applies to – homeware is just as important. With almost half of greenhouse gas emissions coming from how we make and use products, it's time to try and tackle the climate crisis – and every one of us can play our part simply by thinking about our shopping choices.

But what if you love shopping for homeware, we hear you ask? Well, we're with you – and having spent so much more time indoors this last year, it's easy to see why there's been a fast rise in interior purchases, as we all realise the importance of having rooms that we love and that work hard for us.

You'll be pleased to know that there is a way to shop smarter and make more eco-conscious choices, while still enjoying the thrill of finding that perfect piece. After all, it's nice to be able to change up our decor now and again, embrace new trends and welcome in the seasons, whether it's a full revamp or a mini room refresh. The answer isn't a new one, but it's one that you may not have considered: think secondhand and shop around on Gumtree before you buy.

As one of the UK's largest online classified platforms, you'll find so much more than cars, bikes and and DIY tools on Gumtree, and it's a great way to save money, earn cash and make everything go that little bit further. Online secondhand shopping may require a keen eye and a little bit of time, but the excitement of scrolling through a treasure trove of bargains and snapping up that perfect piece at a fraction of the price of a brand new version is surely more satisfying?

Gumtree has been helping people shop sustainably and championing secondhand purchases for over 20 years, and it's a really fun way to shop and find something unique, whether you repurpose, reuse or revamp it. The beauty of the site is that there's so much choice, too, so you're likely to come across something you wouldn't even have considered, whether you're looking for a vintage treasure or something more modern. We're not just talking the odd sofa here, either – you'll find everything from accessories and furniture to period fittings and door knockers!

Of course we're not saying don't ever buy something new again, but it is worth taking the time to mix in some thrift shopping so you can feel good about doing your bit for the planet, while still enjoying changing up your home.

Gumtree isn't just about buying secondhand, it's also the place where you can recycle furniture and accessories you no longer want.

Old chest of drawers no longer working for you? Maybe you want to change up your garden table or chairs? Whatever it is, instead of just binning your items, list them and earn some money to go towards your new purchases – and be satisfied your pre-loved items have gone to good use in someone else's home.

Want to do your bit and make more considered purchases? Then start your new eco-conscious, secondhand shopping and selling today, by taking a look at Gumtree.

Are you a lover of pre-loved items or is shopping on Gumtree a new experience for you? We'd love to know what the best piece you've found is – and how much you've saved or earnt by buying or selling secondhand.
