The Woolroom Deluxe Wool mattress topper slips over your existing mattress to offer cloud-like comfort. Hot sleepers will be blown away by it’s ability to regulate temperature and also with a host of eco-friendly credentials those who care about the environment as much a comfort will also be pleased. This mattress topper has an all-wool filling that is stuffed inside luxurious and soft-to-touch certified organic cotton. It sits at around 4-5cm in depth so isn’t too high but still deep enough to soften up a mattress that feels too firm.

Why you can trust Ideal Home Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing products and services so you can choose the best for you. Find out more about how we test.

Woolroom makes some bold claims about how its natural wool bedding can help you sleep better, but after testing the Woolroom Deluxe Wool Mattress Topper for a couple of weeks, I can say this product lives up to the claims.

In this Woolroom Deluxe Wool Mattress Topper review, I put the brand's natural-fill mattress topper to the test to see how it compares to the best mattress toppers and best cooling mattress toppers on the market.

I tested this mattress topper out on a hybrid memory foam mattress, and took note of how comfortable it was to sleep on, especially as a side sleeper, whether it retained its original shape, and of course, whether it left me waking up all hot and bothered.

Because the Woolroom Deluxe Wool Mattress topper is made up of wool, it’s also naturally hypoallergenic so I was also paying attention to whether it would rid me of the allergy symptoms I’ve been experiencing.

Spoiler: the Woolroom Deluxe Wool Mattress Topper could be the next best thing you invest in for your bed.

How I tested

Sleep position: combination sleeper, but mainly side Tension preference: medium firm Sleep problems: hot sleeper, lower back and neck pain I’m Rachael, a freelance reviewer who helps the Ideal Home team put products through their paces to find the top recommendations for our readers. For this review, I tested out the Woolroom Deluxe Wool Mattress Topper over a double mattress on a slatted bed base.

I'm a combination sleeper, so this mattress topper's comfort levels have been put through their paces in various different sleep positions, and – much to my partner's annoyance – I tend to move around a lot at night, so I was able to test out the topper's motion isolation as well. As a hot sleeper I was also well placed to assess the topper's breathability to see if it delivered a cool night's sleep.

What the brand says

The Woolroom Deluxe Wool Mattress Topper offers a natural and eco-friendly way to soften up your bed and leave you feeling cooler at night.

Sitting between 4 and 5cm in depth, The Woolroom claim their toppers will deliver 25% better sleep than polyester, down, and feather toppers. They put this down to the 'superior moisture management' that wicks away moisture from your body which ultimately stops overheating issues.

The Woolroom Deluxe Wool Mattress Topper is also packed full of 1000gsm British wool. Wool is naturally hypoallergenic so this topper will be resistant to mites, mould, and mildew. It’s also naturally flame retardant meaning that no extra chemicals are used in the making of this topper.  The cover is also made from natural, organic cotton, which has its own cooling effects. This material is more breathable than regular cotton as it promotes additional airflow allowing moisture to evaporate when the temperature increases.

All the wool used within the Woolroom Toppers is traceable back to the Chatsworth Estate, using their own Wool ID® traceability program. This means you can guarantee that the wool has been produced responsibly and that it also directly supports UK farmers. So if you care about the eco-credentials of your mattress, this is something that you’ll love.

The Woolroom Deluxe Mattress Topper comes folded in its own branded cotton bag.

This is so handy if you ever want to store it away, or if you’re buying this topper to sit on top of a sofa bed which is only used occasionally. I’m awful at repackaging things but even I found this topper easy to get back in to the bag.

Attaching the topper to the bed

The topper looks like a super thick duvet. It has thick elastic straps on each of the four corners to help it stay in place. Because this mattress topper is so light, it’s really easy to place on the bed. A quick shake to fluff the filling up and on it goes. You don’t have to wait for it to inflate like some of the memory foam topper choices. The straps are also large enough that if you have a really thick mattress, it’ll still fit without any issues and there’s no worries that the straps will fly off in the middle of the night.

You also don’t have to worry about the filling clumping together as you move the mattress topper around,  the stitching throughout the topper keeps it all in place.

The moment you unwrap this mattress topper you can see how comfortable it is. The outer cover feels soft to the touch and super luxurious, it’s almost a shame to put a top sheet over it. This mattress topper, is, in my opinion, made for comfort rather than support. If you’re struggling with your bed feeling a little too firm, then the Woolroom Deluxe Wool Topper will certainly help turn things around for you.

This topper isn’t very thick it sits between 4-5 cm, so if you want to transform an old mattress, this mattress topper is too thin to mask any lumps or dips.  That said, I do often wake up with pins and needles because of the firmness of my mattress, and whilst using this topper, I didn’t once. It felt like sleeping on top of a plush duvet, I didn’t sink into it so I could still move around freely but it felt a lot cosier.

This mattress topper did a really good job of not getting too hot. I did wake up warm, but not a hot, sweaty mess with my leg hanging out over the cover like I usually do. I just felt snug and cosy and didn’t want to get up because it was so comfortable.

I also noticed a difference in how stuffy I felt after sleeping on this topper. I tend to get very congested during the night but woke up feeling fresh every morning while using this topper. And with Hayfever season about to batter us, this is a great thing.

Ease of care

This mattress topper is dry-cleaned only. That means you can’t machine wash it at home and it definitely cannot be tumble-dried — if you’ve ever tried to tumble-dry a wooden jumper at home then you’ll know why.

Whilst this mattress topper won’t give your whole mattress a complete makeover, it does do a really good job of making it more comfortable. Even if you share a bed and have to deal with another person's body heat, this mattress will keep you warm, cosy and at just the right temperature - although do set your alarm a little earlier because you won’t want to leave your bed.

The eco-friendly credentials also add to a better night's sleep, maybe it’s psychological, but knowing that the materials were all natural and that the sheep came from a farm where they were looked after did make a difference to me.

I also liked that it was a bit thinner, it didn’t add too much height to the bed so my sheets fitted over the top without too much wrestling. Being able to store it away is another huge plus point as if it does get a little too warm during the summer months it can just be packed ready to come back out once the weather turns.
