We’re all in need of a bit of escapism this month, while also being on the lookout for wallet-friendly design inspiration. Which is why Habitat’s 2023 spring/summer line-up could be the perfect tonic.

To find out more, we’ve interviewed two of their top designers – Samantha Barrows and Tom Sullivan – for the lowdown on what helps them get creative. It’s all part of our Natural Habitats series – discovering what lies behind great design, from moments of inspiration to materials and more.

Habitat’s textiles and trends expert Samantha Barrows is a fan of products that tell a story. A self-styled 'country creative', she loves being surrounded by nature far from the hustle and bustle of the city. Yet in contrast she’s drawn to the frenetic feel of travel, drawing inspiration from the colourful azulejo tiles of Lisbon or the vintage finds of a treasure trove in Margate.

For Samantha, it’s the longevity of items that really inspires and adds to a piece’s integrity – particularly if an item has come back into fashion. And with easy access to Habitat’s archive, there’s always inspiration from the past to help light the touchpaper on a new modern classic.

Tom Sullivan, senior lighting designer, wants light to play an even greater role in our lives, from mental wellbeing to evoking a sense of place. He’s quite literally illuminated by Brooklyn’s eclectic aesthetic – and is similarly fascinated by the fun of 60s and 70s lighting, and its experimental takes on fibreglass, wood and ceramics.

As we all look to a more sustainable future – and a less disposable culture – Habitat’s designers are helping to create pieces you will want to hang on to for years to come. With an ethos of 'design for all', the talented team have created a stunning collection for 2023. Over the coming weeks, we’ll be showcasing some of our favourite items, along with video interviews going behind the scenes of their creation. Our Natural Habitats series celebrates the best of British design – with plenty of inspiration and tips for your home. So you may just find a new treasured item with its own story to tell.
